LIVE
Happy Friday we celebrate boy bands welcome back to the brain buster brain buster got
any more brain busters if you know all the members of in sync you can go ahead
and yeah you can hit us with that brain buster at CRK our US H hi Rose hello we
got some answers we got some rad peeps that wrote us yeah gave us answers wow
yeah very cool do you want to go first cuz yours was I didn't think anybody was
gonna get yours well dinner the other night I had gone to the IBEW
holiday banquet and my co-worker friend and I we left and we went down to have a
drink at a bar and we ran into a friend and he said I got the quiz right I got
the brain buster yeah because he had he had damned me earlier and I told him
none other than our guests yeah and what inspired our having a Tanner as a guest
guest host expert yes guess guess hate hate expert he's a hate spurt it was a
hate spurt he doesn't like Jeep but we asked him yeah we asked him to talk
about it anyway yeah yeah yeah so what really took place is that Kristen said
I've been listening to your podcast Tanner said I've got the brain buster and
I said really and he said Emily said I do and I didn't want to believe him I was
I don't know about this guy and he really verified even so he verified he said yeah I
own a 67 my spidey senses were going nuts mm-hmm I was like oh my god this guy's
on to me he's got it he knows what's happening 68 federal law states that
cars need to have side markers amber for the front and red for the rear mm-hmm
and then they specified more specifically that they needed to have a
light bulb behind them so really like oh so first it was just yeah reflectors
maybe just reflectors and then it was light bulbs after and they were like
yeah it needs to have a light inside of it yeah yep well I mean I think side
markers are great yeah it took it took about a year for it really to take shape
and so what my you know coding in the in the description of the or the question
yeah was that they then started stamping pockets in for side markers yeah
notable side markers the Chevy bowville right that's one that you get off of
like a GMC van like a high-package option but they came on the 60 67 to 72
Chevy trucks you can just get them from LMC truck brand new that's called the
bowville side marker yeah because that's what the GMC van they came with it is
called the trans am side markers similar to the bowville it's two stacked
bars but it's flush molded into the car oh yeah that's a slick one yeah now
another that inspired part of my question and kind of like what really got
this going for me mm-hmm is the circle side markers on the charger oh I didn't
know they had circle ones they have little circle chrome circles little orange
dot little red dot I have to look at those next super cool wow that does sound
rad but like yeah on the on the 68 Chevy van it's the second gen early and so
people always know that you've either got a 68 you know 68 9 or 70 mm because
you've got side markers interesting 67 yeah doesn't so it's the only second
gen with no side marker yeah so it's a design cue yeah yeah it changed the body
they had to change the dies do you want to we didn't repeat your question because
this is I it blew my mind that he got it okay but I know the question yeah the
question that you state the question for you to stitch it back in the actual
question at hand is that what did a federal mandate change that required
changes in automotive design and stamping and what year did it happen in
because I didn't want to give away the year either because it was way too big of
a cue yeah and so you you kind of freaked me out and you were like you cast a
really wide net I thought so that's what I listened to it and I was like ooh that
is seems really like super vague and then Tanner just like he's got it he got it
right away exactly what it was and he said it was because of the stamping yeah
because you mentioned stamping so you did give an Easter egg yep because yeah
they did have to make a little spot for it yeah to to park the side marker it
changed the design so Tanner you win a Corvette yeah you win the imaginary
Corvette even the imaginary started imagining your dream garage today yep of
whatever size and dimension you want yep hopefully it's big enough to fit the
Corvette in though yeah you know don't don't make it too small yeah yep build
your dream well my question was the body count on jeep what's the body count on
jeep I did get an answer on this you got quite a list huh I got quite a list but
I do have an answer okay this is from Gina Miss metal and she also answered
roses question rose 1973 body and bumper we wanted to have Gina we wanted to get
Gina but she wasn't available but we'll get her we'll get her next time yeah
Gina how Gina had a pretty inside scoop on this Gina's answers was for roses
question 1973 body and bumper standards I guess though yeah it was a good guess
that's another that that was a really good guess that's close I felt like
that's really close yeah like I'm glad that it elicited a response that was
really close to what it is yeah because that makes me feel like it was a
decent little quiz yeah it could have been well because it could have been the
answer could have been that right it's close and then she also asks is rose
talking about safety changes to the hood and stuff from the 2000s is it
cheating to keep answering truth is roses is too vague because there are a lot of
things this could be oh she should have given us an error at least accusation
roses is too big well excuse me which was what I thought to Gina so I'm there
with you I agreed in the DM but hey it turned out it wasn't for my question she
was like are we talking about willies or just cheap cheap brand AMC Chrysler
Mercedes Fiat Solantis if willies counts then add Ford so she got a lot of them
the thing is is that the Jeep heritage body count if you will is really murky
murky like you don't believe it like you think there's controversy here is the
body at long last at long last finally hold this list back any further finally
we get to the meat of the podcast oh the meat of the bones the it's really the
meat is is that who fucking knows because where's the beef because the meat is
the where's the beef it's very it's it's very muddled and it's very gray and it's
not black and white like if if Ford Ford all four did was produce them yes so we
can't really say that Ford it's gray area personally I that is the one that I
want to rule out but I like then I apply my other rules to it and then I'm like
well it's hard to disqualify yeah so you think Ford in or out Ford is the one I
don't want to credit okay because they really hate Ford they made them for the
government only but like so did American Bantam right and a collector could
have one right so and they're gonna get mad at us well the fact that a collector
had one means that someone produced one yeah if you produce it does that mean
you own it though we weren't talking about how many did Jeep get in bed with
and just fool around we're talking about the whole shebang going all the way
that's a tough that's a toughie because I mean in a sense right like Bantam
barely owns it well yeah Bantam I don't think that they did really because it
was a it was a government contract that they were able to win the rights to at
first and then but without Bantam it wouldn't exist no that's true without
Bantam wouldn't exist but so they own the design because they made the design
interesting well the designer himself right own design but he was hired by
American Bantam yeah and then American Bantam technically sold it to the
government right they were the designer they were awarded the prize money okay
okay so in a way they created the design sold to the government so the owner one
is Bantam owner two is the US government okay because they sold them the
prototype okay and then we have Willie's is pretty easy because they won the name
and also they did get the trademark in 50 yeah in yeah and but they started
trying to get it in 1943 yes so that one I'm taking your word for it sorry
taking a while well yeah just take my word for it I watched the video yeah I
have Ford is just an overflow man and then Kaiser here's another one that gets
muddled a little bit from 55 to 70 Kaiser had Jeep but they also changed their
name from Kaiser to Kaiser Frasier and then from Kaiser Frasier to Kaiser Jeep
so does that count as three different well what about Willie motors to Kaiser
Jeep that's the first iteration is it it goes because it's Willie
so it's so it's Willie's and then Willie's motors I thought it was Willie's
overland it is Willie's overland first like Willie's overland made it for the
government for sure so if a company changes its name does that mean it's a
new company and that means that Jeep even even in engines of change Paul and
Gracia lists and says Bantam Willie's overland Kaiser Frasier and Willie's
motors the corporate shuffle set a pattern for Jeep that endured and then in
63 Kaiser Jeep instead of Willie's motors though the corporate ownership
remain the same so that one's questionable because it's Kaiser Jeep to
Willie motors that's really motors to Kaiser Jeep Willis motors yeah Willie's
motors yeah so is that but the corporation has stayed the same so does
that mean it that one's weird right because that's like the same that there's
straight up telling you same company yeah so that one I feel like doesn't apply so
does Willie's own two different jeeps two different times Willie's overland and
then Willie's yeah I didn't read it you should see this chicken scratch I can't
that's why Willie's motors Willie's mutters yeah yeah right
mutters go out mudden mudden in your Jeep so are those two I mean like Nash
Kelvinator and Hudson merged to make American motors in 54 yeah but they
didn't have Jeep then no they didn't get jeep till way later yeah so that doesn't
count as a two companies not yet so okay we gotta we gotta decide so far we
only have Bantam in the government as and then we have Willie's overland yeah
and then is Willie's motors a second owner yes okay and then I said Frazier
okay and then Kaiser and the only problem here is that Kaiser Jeep which
should be important in this discussion is it's just that it says in 63 they
change from Willie's motors to Kaiser Jeep but it's like the same company it
makes a new label on the product is that instituted change I don't think if it's
the same company they're just changing a name yeah okay so we don't count that
one so then by the same respects do we count is Kaiser Frazier than a
different company I feel like it's listed in engines of change like that okay
and that makes it a fact but Kaiser Jeep is a different company I think that one
no it doesn't count because it's still Willie's motors Kaiser Jeep was after
the Willie's motors it's Willis motors to Kaiser Jeep oh what about Kaiser Frazier
that's earlier so is it Kaiser Kaiser Frazier or just only Kaiser Frazier this
is muddy it's confusing Bantam Willie's overland Kaiser Frazier's and Willie's
motors which then becomes Kaiser Jeep okay well it says you know it says that
they had we're never gonna know how many companies she was owned by yeah well we
gotta get somewhere so then Kaiser Jeep 63 we keep going the Wagoneer the
Cherokee Kaiser Jeep trudged along 67 faced with growing competition from
international harvester scout the Ford Bronco and other Jeep knockoffs the
company launched a new Jeepster series aimed at the fun and recreational
market unlike the original Jeepsters the new vehicle had four-wheel drive a few
years later a British rock band named T Rex saying girl I'm just a Jeepster for
your love which presumably conveyed an expression of effect of affection the
Wagoneer and the Jeepster along with royalties from companies that
manufactured Jeeps overseas produced modest profits for Kaiser Jeep but by
70 Henry J. Kaiser had died his son Edgar was running the Kaiser conglomerate
seeing little feature he gave it up as a second tier car company it says he saw
a little future Edgar sold Kaiser Jeep to American Motors in 1970 for 70
million yep giving Jeep yet another corporate owner so you got to put down
AMC now yep so are there two Kaisers or there's just one Kaiser you're still on
the Kaiser thing yeah because I'm trying to figure yes I'm trying to Kaisers or
just one it should be Kaiser Frasier and then Willie's Motors and I think you
leave Kaiser Jeep sort of out of it okay so not and not just regular guys them as
the same thing not Kaiser just in general just Kaiser period okay it's
Kaiser Frasier okay okay yeah and then we're on to AMC and that was 72 87 and an
81 Renault bought 51% of AMC's shares okay so Renault so Renault counts you're not
numbering them please number them Renault is number seven and then
Chrysler in 87 swooped up AMC along with the Jeep brand they swooped it up for
the Jeep brand they also took the AMC Eagle with them and I can't remember how
long that lasted but it was basically until parts ran out is what they did and
that it would be number eight because the Eagle is badass that's why yeah the
Eagle fucking rules I can't believe that they didn't keep it going for longer
yeah but I'm glad to hear that they did that they didn't or that they did know
that they like at least ran it to the parts ran out yeah yeah it's cool it's
very cool and I think especially now with like the crossovers and the Subaru
Outback and all of the all-wheel-drive cars that are for like snow sports and
going in the mud and all that extreme stuff extreme driving conditions that you
know they could have done really well maybe staying power is pretty amazing oh
Jeep staying power is incredible yeah no they're iconic I mean just the fact that
a company will buy them just to get the Jeep yeah they'll buy a whole company
just to buy that definitely speaks by a whole company like kill the company I
think part of it was that they wanted the dealerships because AMC had a it's
like getting Neil Young on your record label exactly so Chrysler was until
1998 and then it became Daimler Daumler I suppose forget how to say Daimler
Chrysler Daimler and then Daimler came in and bought Chrysler so as Daimler
Chrysler Daimler Chrysler so what are we at now 10 or 11 or what we are at
number nine number nine yep that was in 98 and then Daimler sold Chrysler to the
Cerebrus capital management and these people had no automotive experience and
so that didn't last very long oh my god yeah they got sold to like a investment
firm like a capital management what year was that that was in 98 no I don't know
what year that was actually that's okay so that's number 10 I'm not gonna hold
you to it yeah don't okay don't so it didn't last very long but I didn't get
total dates on this because now I have in 2014 Fiat Vice Chrysler okay and this
is obviously Jeep is here in this that's number 11 okay I have a hard time
believing that the Cerebrus people had had yeah I think Daimler Chrysler must
have lasted a lot longer and I'm sorry people I didn't get the numbers on that
the question was what's the body count not what's the dates okay so there that's
yeah I accept these there we go and then the last company which is current is
Salonis yeah and that is number 12 okay I'm gonna yeah I'll go with that if
if somebody wants to passionately argue that please yep call in and leave us a
message mm-hmm or actually we DM in at Carcrush C.A.R.K.
DM us a voicemail at Carcrush yep DM us a voicemail so Rose what's your question for next week
this question is brought to you this week by our special guest Tanner on the
pile up yeah he was on what is the first production turbocharged car in the

dig down deep and find out sister first turbocharged production car United
States might not be what you think right exactly I want to say to when we're
doing these I didn't find out my answer until like well just now
big reveal big reveal so I guess for one that makes it so I can't really judge
people but I do have to say if you're doing it or if you're right or wrong so
you have to sort of have some ideas but when I ask the question this question
whatever sometimes I know the answer sometimes I don't also we should mention
real quick is that we record these on Wednesdays and it comes out on Friday so
if you have an answer you need to get it to us before Wednesday evening after 2 30
yeah PM yeah if you want us to discuss the Pacific
accuracy of your statement yeah exactly so which yeah our statement has some
accuracy issues sometimes too yeah we don't know if we're right what's your
question for next week my question is brain buster what was the last year of
the firebird last year of the Pontiac fire the Pontiac firebird yep that's a
light lift well so I mean we encourage people you don't have to just
Google these like go ask somebody you work with yeah could be fun ask yeah ask
somebody an auto parts store yeah oh ask somebody that you did I already say
somebody you work with yeah maybe if you got a second job ask somebody you can
only ask one person for a job with the brain buster rules are oddly specific but
we would appreciate you adhering to them yeah please conform thank you thank you
very much you've been busted up what are we seeing what I was doing our sign off
I yeah I don't know I don't know that we have one I mean the I thought your
brain's been busted your brain's been busted that's what it was I think is that
