But what it actually happened is that when he was pulling out around everybody he couldn't stop
His brake pads were falling out of his wheel
Like I I kind of they had their windows down so they're like cuz this guy and his girlfriend
They're kind of hollering at each other, you know in the Tahoe. Yeah, and I just like it's only happening like 15 miles an hour
That's good. So yeah, that's slow
And then you just hear these things clunk out and like I just kind of know what they sound like cuz you know
You do have enough times you've dropped them or whatever, you know, you're like, I know that sound
Yeah, you kind of like I know what about ways that and it would be falling off of a wheel right now
And it was his back brakes, but that's enough like to lose your back brakes

You would have to do another pump to fully extend the piston and get your fronts to start to lock up
So it's like it'd be kind of a disaster. Yeah, it sounds real scary

But like they just like freaked out and took off like I wanted to be like, sir your pads

But seeing your tires are low when you first told me this I was like wait you had like flat your tires were going flat
That was the first sign that I was like not a car guy

talked about getting pulled over on the he lived in northern Ohio
Talked about getting pulled over in Pennsylvania near the border and he had air shocks and the guy put a tape measure to his bumper
And made him let the air shocks down and it dragged his tires and made him drive to the state line like that

The first year I had my transit on my go pullover nine times nine times. Yeah nine times
I'm just going to tell one of those stories though
So I just got in a new clutch and I had this is my first v8
And it needed a clutch so driving it I'd had it for like a couple months
And I didn't know really what it drove like because the clutch was really bad
So I got this new clutch and I'm like sweet. I was a bartender. I was like once I get off work tonight
I'm going to go to this closed kmart and I'm going to session that parking lot

Okay, do do do do and I'm all like dressed up because I would just got off a shift, you know getting tips
And so what time is it one in the morning? It's probably
three
It might be I used to drive a lot after work and it would be around like three four
So it was definitely late. I can't remember if I might have worked a day shift and then
But I think it was pretty late because I felt like it was safe to drive around those times of nights because there's not cars on the road
So that was my favorite time to drive. I get to the kmart whatever and I just fucking
rally
I just doughnuts left right all around everywhere
And I'm finally like, okay. I might not have back tires anymore
Wow
I'm gonna stop and there is smoke over the entire parking lot. It's just like the whole thing is smoked out
Yeah, I went only went nuts and it's and I was scared. I was like, oh man. I hope I didn't blow my back tires
So I go to pull out onto the street. I think it's a hundred and twenty second
And there's a cop right there sitting there watching me
Oh my god
And so I just casually turned he's like to my left. I casually turned right
Go up to the light, which is like a block away take a left
And of course he follows me and he pulls me over after the left as the parking lot was private property
It was something well, it was open to the public
But probably not anymore because it came out
I feel like you can't get a ticket in private parking lot. Kmart was closed. But maybe maybe that's just the essence
I think well, he so he pulls me over
And um, he comes to the car and he's like, is this your car?
And it's like, yeah
And then he's like he's like is something going on like are you going through a breakup or
Oh, that's so sweet. Like he was like concerned for my mental health. That's really sweet, I guess
And then I was just like, no, I just I got a new clutch
And I haven't really been able to drive this car like really drive it
Because whatever it's my first v8 and I said I'm out here at this time of night because I figured it's safe because there's no one around
And he's like, well
There's a lot of people that come from these apartment buildings because there was apartment buildings like around
And then there was a convenience store and he's like
People will walk across that parking lot at all hours of the night and you know, sometimes they may be drunk or whatever
And he's like you could easily hit someone and then he was like
You know, I could give you a reckless driving ticket
And like told me a little bit about that
And then he just let me go on my way. It was really nice of him. I told you he's given a $500 citation to a finger puppet before and then
When you said wow, he let you go
If you were thoroughly impressed he'd let you go

Yeah, I got I got pulled over in a small town once in a speed trap and I like went to the gas station
And like how's your day going? I was like, oh, I just got pulled over and she's like, oh, yeah, that's harry. He lets everybody go on sundays

One of our valedictorians he rebuilt his 305 for his camaro. I don't want to like say too much, but I think that he's

Awesome because he went to an edelbrock intake. He went to a bigger camshaft
He did rings and bearings. I don't think he changed the pistons
I think he just did the same like he just kind of shade tree like just a little ball hone and scuffed up the
Scuffed up the walls head gaskets, you know did his intake and everything and
I mean he talked like it's like it's a totally different driving car
Which I mean the aftermarket intake will change everything alone, but having compression
Having compression changes things quite a bit. So and rings rings will do that. So
Uh, Sean wrote me and asked me a really funny question
And okay, I want to hear it

Because I think I think why Sean partially maybe why he asked me this is that when we do the engine class

I notice you have a forward van with a Chevy engine personally. I think a cool car is a cool car
I'm definitely Chevy leaning but that has more to do with it being the most familiar to me mechanically

As far as the big three, I think it's like the stage is a grief
Denial is getting a Chevy you get one because your dad had one. It was cheap. It works
You're always rough on it. No oil changes only top offs damn thing does 400,000. You swear
It's just a car
But when it dies
You realize it was much more than that
Then you're in anger for letting yourself treat this great vehicle so poorly. You could have done more
You could have said you loved it. Oh

You see a Ford with a 390 or a 460 and it's 300 or 500
And you're like, I can't afford that but think of the power

You're convincing yourself that you can buy this ridiculous because they're out there
I mean, this is for real. We would see them on our like local craigslist in Louisville

And you're just like I would get six miles to the gallon
But you're like but it would riff and it's five hundred dollars
But you're like you already know going into it. You have to now buy gas for a 460
I mean when I had my 350 in my one-ton Chevy my first van my 83
Had 350 and 373 rear gears and the gas gauge was like a backwards clock
Yeah, and that was like the first time gas hit four dollars a gallon. Whoo. It was depressing
I made 300 a week then so
Oh, no, you can't afford gas and that thing. Oh my god. I had to get my old Volvo back
Which was not a not a problem. Anyway, okay that stage
You know convincing yourself you can buy this ridiculous big engine and afford to drive it
This is bargaining. This is the bargaining stage of grief
Then you buy the Ford and you love it
It has all the power in the world except to pass a gas station and you have to buy the gas
This is the stage of depression
Now you're doing it and you're driving it. So now you've bought the ridiculous car, but you do love it, right?
Again, I have to buy another car to drive. Right. I mean, that's the depression of it
It's like so then because you survive the Ford you start to see the natural beauty in the very deranged machinations of mopar
You start to learn their colors of their wiring code. You say, yeah, sure
Why shouldn't I paint half my battery cable orange or why shouldn't my drive shaft be bare metal and my control arms have zinc green primer
It's how the factory did it this stage. This is acceptance
That's you know, once you finally get to it and you like buy a mopar. I think you've just
You know, that's beautiful. I think that's how it goes though. Yeah
You get the Chevy, you know

When I would say for me it was working in

On the first car the hot rod I cycled
I say that because the body had been painted like 15 years earlier
And this guy couldn't get the shop to finish putting the car together was a 34 Ford fiberglass body
Then a 39 deluxe 39 master deluxe and so like that's like a sedan
Really beautiful car and that's when I started to be like, okay. I get the Ford thing. These are cool
Yeah, um, I mean they're like totally blue collar cars compared to like
Faye Butler loves Pierce arrows and that's like a much fancier car. So like fords are kind of like
They're a very very blue collar car

I wound up working on like 69 and 70 Mustangs for years at hot rod shops
There were two at Keith's I'd never even seen them before and then I went to Brad Starks and there was another one
We were working on one down there that was like a restoration

I was describing we'd had to do that on a kuda for somebody. It was a kuda convertible. He like bought this stuff
called rpm
And it was like real pure magic or something. It was like a wax that you brushed on with a heat gun
Because drive shafts supposed to be bare metal and then same thing the control arms from the factory had
The they had like half of them was zinc green primer and then the other half was bare metal
So I think we had to like paint them and then brush that wax overspray. Yeah

Did you paint it like they would at the factory just you made it overspray or you painted it
As if it was overspray, but you painted it on Keith made it look like it was over sprayed
Yeah, I mean because it's like they would paint the ends of it and then half of it has overspray up it
So it was like fake overspray. Yeah. Well, I mean it was real overspray. It was sprayed. Yeah, okay
I mean you just yeah, it's not but it wasn't sprayed from the part that was it wasn't sprayed to Detroit robot. Well
We couldn't borrow that. What are you implying?
Yeah, we couldn't we couldn't get the rights to use the arm

Hmm. Okay, and you know what he was talking about was he has a 302 and his 302
Has a lifter tick he thinks and it was Chuck's 302. It was the machine
It's this mid-ford and it's pretty cool. It's got stuff stuck all over it and I think there's a bald eagle involved
It's a neat van. It's got some air brushing or graphics. It says the machine on the spoiler or the hood
Maybe there's like a bug guard
I don't have a great visual image of it exactly, but
Anyway, Ray was talking about he's like it's good, but it's got a lifter tick
And he's like when the oil pressure goes up then the sound changes. I was like, okay
I was like, you know, normally I'd tell you to just do it
But you can't get good lifters
Lifters ride on top of the camshaft if you don't know what a lifter is, you know valve lifter
So on top of the camshaft, you know, let's say you've got the lobe on the camshaft
The lifter is riding on it and it gets lifted up and the push rod is on top of that and it pushes the
Rocker and the rocker opens the valve. Yeah, that's how you get air and fuel in or that's how you get it out on the exhaust side
so
The lifter has on the bottom of it a two degree taper from the center out
And that is yeah, so it spins as as the lobe of the camshaft comes up
It turns a little bit each time about a sixth of a turn
You can paint nail polish on your push rods and then just turn the starter and watch them all turn
If you've got your intake off
So
I was like ray, I would tell you just do them. Wait, what is oh
backup
What is the purpose of them spinning?
They just do because of this taper but also so they don't they wear evenly. Okay. That way they don't get a track ground into them
That's what happens. That's the opposite is when they don't spin
That's when the camshaft winds up. They wind up destroying each other. Oh, okay
The the lifter will eat into the cam. Okay lobe
That's and then grind it down to nothing and that's the problem people have been having is that's a bad
That's a bad break in and that's why so many people have been going roller
It costs
You know almost three times as much
You can get a flat-tap of cam lifters for like 250 dollars
But with a roller it's like a thousand bucks. Maybe 1200 with
Holy cow. Yeah, damn
And then you got to refigure your whole push rod distance
Yeah, wow
But if you're doing that, then you're probably going to roller rockers
And if you do roller rockers, you got to get push rod guides might not be included
And if you're going to go to roller rockers, you've got to do threaded in studs
You can't have pressed in studs in the head because they might pop out
Wow a lot of a lot of details here a lot of project creep
Scope creep
It's definitely like a
If you're changing your windshield wipers, you might as well go ahead and do your windshield kind of thing
You might as well paint your whole van. Yeah, if you're gonna if you're gonna sharpen your windshield wipers
So what I told ray, I was like, you know, I'd tell you to just do it
But you'd have to find nos lifters. So I looked up nos
I because it's a 302, right? So I just like looked up nos 302 lifters
What do you think an nos set of 302 lifters is going for on ebay ford ford ones
Ford Ford brand, okay from Ford

That's new old stock if you're not familiar with the acronym out there in radio city out there in radio city

For nos lifters. Wow, but that's where I'd spend my money because there is no premium lifter anymore
Right, I've seen I saw some talk a couple years back about somebody starting a premium lifter company because of this problem

Did so somebody started a company, I don't know that it happened. I just remember seeing talk about it, but I don't know where it went
Wow, I didn't keep up with it. Wow. So it's like you're gonna just put the money
Or you're gonna go through tearing up your cam
Well, one of my co-workers told me that he was helping is I think his brother-in-law and he's got a numbers matching Malibu
and he had his engine rebuilt and they went through a lobe on the break-in and
I
Think they're breaking in the cabinet eight through a lobe and then that went into the oil system
So they had to take the whole thing apart send it out and have it hot tanked again
And he's like he's like so then we fit him, you know
He wanted it to look like the original engine, but I was like, we'll just fit you with a roller cam
And he said they went roller
You know and he said we basically went from having already spent six grand to ten grand
Because I think they wound up having to balance the whole rotating assembly after that
Whoa, you know
Because I think I think it tore up the crank. Maybe did he just not he didn't buy the expensive
NOS probably not
Yeah, I mean they just you know, or this is just what happens when a lifter goes bad
Yeah, when a lifter goes bad next up on fox when lifters go bad

Yeah, you've got what a bearing that's gone bad. Well, first we gotta do the brakes on the corvette
Yeah, that is the good news is you got the bolts
I know that I said that I already got my last piece for the corvette and that was a total lie
Today I did get the actual last piece last piece and that is the mounting bolts for the calipers
Yeah, and I got them from uh bears corvette, which is a really cool little family owned
Corvette specialty shop in pennsylvania. We've actually been super busy in the shop. We pulled the engine from my astro van
That was awesome. We crept right up on it one night
And we were trying to do it because we were like rain's coming and
We we hit 10 30 and I was like we're gonna have to put this thing away because of the rain
And there's like cracks in the sidewalk and grass on the way to where it was gonna live
So thankfully we called it and then I worked on a new lifting plate for the throttle body intake
She nailed it. We needed to be so close to the intake. It's so tight in the astro van
Yeah, we could not have a chain. There was not enough links for it. So
I had to make a special lifting plate
No big deal
Easy enough totally killed it worked out. Awesome. It was perfect. Yep, and we uh
Yeah, I don't know we we thought we were gonna have to cut the exhaust, but we were able to sneak the engine out of the manifold
Once they were loose
So yep, it was perfect and then riso came over and we worked on moldy tea the model tea that were
Uh, this we're eking out. That's like a tribute to the ice truck. Mm-hmm
It's starting to take shape the whole idea. I guess the whole idea. Yeah, it's very thrilling
Like if you were playing a video game like mario kart where like all the cars kind of looks similar
But a little bit different and ice truck is the main character. We're the yellow car
Yeah, that's the idea. It's our car is from ice trucks world
Mm-hmm. Yeah, but it's not exactly the same. Nope
But it is of the same family and that that part should be obvious. Yeah
So joe came over and we worked on more ribs on the roof. We made an acrylic windshield
We haven't posted photos of that yet, but we did share where we cut the wood version of the windshield
Then we cut out an acrylic windshield
To just sort of start getting ideas. We're building this body out of just like flimsy wood at the moment
And then we were gonna glass it and sort of you know
Working into shape and probably take a mold off of it and I wanted to build a metal one
I don't know if that's gonna happen or not. Yeah, I know you keep talking about fiberglass
I know I keep well I keep I want to move forward with it
Emily's working on the grill on the grill shell
custom grill shell rizzo's got a wild idea, but
We're gonna keep that in area 51 for right now. Mm-hmm. It is a really cool part of it
But I don't want to like I don't want to give it away. I think it's neat, but I want to feel the

But it was good. We made progress on that. We're gonna make a fiberglass grill shell
Um for the moment. We're just trying to get pieces made. So we were trying to get a c4 corvette rear
And that was part of my ride over today. I was behind the c4 for a little bit

I was coming up on it and I was like, is this a Mustang and then I was like
It really looks like a c4 then I convinced myself it was a Camaro and a Mustang

So we were
Yeah, we cut the windshield made it out of acrylic and we got some more pieces made
And we are trying to get a c4 rear in from a corvette. We saw on a marketplace and we were waiting. It was perfect
And I don't know how marketplace works really
But I saved it and I couldn't find it. It couldn't find it again in my saved stuff. So I think it's gone
Yeah, I think that he just deleted it because he probably sold it and maybe just deleted the posting
And then I tried to look the guy's name up because rose had a screenshot with his name and it I couldn't
I wish that weren't true. I couldn't find him on facebook. I wish that weren't true
Yeah, I really wanted to I thought I thought that was her lucky break and I thought maybe we had like a week or two
We could
Yeah, wait a little bit. Well, we didn't we didn't snooze you lose. Yeah, we missed out
But yeah, we're trying to get a corvette rear. So if anybody out there in radio city has a c4 c4 corvette rear and whole thing

Yeah, we're gonna work on your brakes and then we've worked on the model t so we've got four different
There's a lot of stuff going on four different cars. We're working on gently sprinkling about yep
I can't wait to drive the corvette again

And it wasn't like I took them apart. I cleaned them. I
Sam blasted them. I painted them. I got the seals in

Everything the pistons back in everything is ready to go
And then you know what I forgot to do is make sure that the bleeder valves would come off
Yeah, the bleeder screws were stuck and it turns out they couldn't
Yep, they broke off inside the caliper. Yep. It was pretty bad from that point on
I was like, well, I'll just I owe you a couple dollars. I'll just buy you some calipers
Yeah, so I just got new calipers, but uh, anyway, that was my this part of it
Yeah, I was like most people don't go this deep most people just buy the caliper
I just wanted to see how it worked. I admire I admire that but you know what it was
It's been too long. I know now sometimes you just check the smallest thing to take when you take some apart
Yeah, I'd be like that sometimes. Yeah, but anyway, we've been busy. We've been busy working on stuff
