LIVE
I
Happy Wednesday, happy Wednesday, it's the pile up the pile up
That's your second intro. I know there's already another intro ahead of that
But we had to cut it then we have to riff on the intro for an intro
Yeah, we cut it for you because we didn't want your ears to listen to how horrible it was. Oh
Oh, the the oh, sorry. No the first intro. Sorry
I was describing the fact that there's an intro that is automatic at the beginning of the episode. Oh
Where we make pile up sound effects, and then we basically just come on live and do it again. Yeah, we do
I know is it too much?
Yeah, why don't you add us if it sucks?
Tell you what if you think it sucks, why don't you give us a follow?
Like like give us a follow
Yeah, perfect you're invited perfect. Yeah, I thought we were criticizing our first intro that we just cut and started over
What Emily's referring to is a series of jokes in which we bombed
They were so bad and we chose to start over with stronger stuff. Yeah, so here we are we just we've given up on being funny
Completely, we're gonna play it straight for the rest of the show. This is gonna be like Charlie Rose
It's just gonna be just pace arrow by the book just strong journalism
Nothing but the facts mm-hmm all of the facts all so many facts yeah facts that aren't even factual you're gonna think it's
encyclopedia
Encyclopedia pile up it was a really long ride here today. Yep. Did it took you so long to get here?
It really did like is she ever gonna even get here?
She even on our way right because I'm usually already on this side of town, but I wasn't today and
My ride here was it was very slow, so that puts you into interaction with the public and
With the van people. I was having a good van day. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I will say though
Probably the first interaction was a guy on a beach cruiser cruising by me
And he shook his head
He shook his head like wait which way up and down or left right?
He took he went by he turned and caught a look at me in my van and
Then shook his head in disapproval. He's the dork on the beach cruiser
That's what I was like
Well, you know
I wasn't even mad about it because he looked like he was enjoying the hell out of his bike and you know what?
He's right. There's one layer of sheet metal between me and the other cars. It's dangerous
No, he saw the lack of safety
Did he know lap belts no shoulder restraint does he know that though? I mean, that's why he's riding a bike
Yeah, you know cars are just so dangerous bikes are extra dangerous. Yeah, that was
Yeah, no, no proof he shook his head he didn't like it or maybe he was like maybe he's just always wanted one in it
Really, you know, yeah, it was just setting him off. Wow like there's my dream van right there
He was just uh-uh-uh. No, he didn't like it. He didn't like it. Yeah, which was pretty funny to me. That's hilarious
Yeah, it was pretty funny. I got a laugh out of it. Yeah, I wonder if he's gonna talk about it later
I get so many people that like it that it's I kind of appreciate somebody kind of nice when somebody doesn't yeah
Yeah, I like when I get the opposite like this guy was moved by it that he
Disliked he was so moved he passed you and then turned around and shook his head. Yeah. Yeah. Wow
Yeah, what else did you come across?
Well about a hundred feet later. There was a guy that looked like he had been transplant
He looked like an English punk like you looked like a I don't know
He just looked like a an extra from a Nick Cave documentary or something, you know
Just like so that guy's got like a sport coat on or something
And he's got an umbrella and just like really like kind of unkempt dark hair and he looks at me
And so I throw him a peace sign and then he's like throws it back to me
But then he like starts pointing up, you know, like
Like what am I gonna do take off like a UFO?
I'm just gonna twirl the man up and go like yeah, man. Totally. I got her. Do you see want me to do a wheel stand?
Since I have the big tires. Oh
I don't know. I think it's the you and then he proceeded to walk in and oh
No
Oh
He was like taunting cars going by
You know like because he's crossing during an orange hand moment, you know
Yeah, so he's like he's like kind of like acting like he's gonna step in on people then of course
I was like all right now. I got a so he's like going across the street
But now I'm coming through the corner and he's still like waving everybody through
I was like this guy
I was gonna get a double dose of this guy and then
So I'm on the you know, I'm on the rest of the way down here
And I'm like finally get to see Zershavez and come up and then there's like somebody dancing at the roundabout
Wow, okay
Zershavez and Gleason. Yeah, and I read this sign. They had a sign they were holding sign and then there was a dry erase board and I
Like at first I thought it was a protest of a gay podcast because it said don't shoot baby
gay podcast on Spotify iTunes, Apple, whatever and I was like
What is this person in protest of shooting a gay?
But no, it was like a guy and he had red lipstick on it was like dancing with the don't shoot baby sign
And it's like a gay and it said like it had 18 and it was crossed out like, you know, it's like explicit
Oh, no one under 18 on this okay. Yeah, it was it was podcast advertising and I was like wow should like Emily
And I drive the Corvette up on the island of that roundabout
I was like, where do we like where do we go hard stance the car just stand there with signs and promote the podcast
Yeah, wow probably in that I think the spot. I think he's on to something. I think it's that roundabout
Yeah, is it not like the Fred Meyers parking lot like hard park there and sleep
Hit up everybody coming off of no because there people can walk up to you and interrupt what you're doing
The roundabout people are just going around and around it's true
And they're just gonna read the sign. They're gonna go home first thing
They're gonna do is listen to the podcast or play round and round
What is it called round and round yeah
What are the lyrics?
Love will find a way to skip it time round and round what goes around comes around
I'll tell you why
Out on the street. You know that's where we'll meet
Something you bring you draw the line. I always break the line or something so this was just my ride over and you know
The van always makes people actually usually makes people happy other than the guy on the beach cruiser
Yeah, and again, I still I appreciate him hating on it, but
Usually it's like people are stoked on it or tell me about it
I talked to a guy at the gas station the other day that his dad had one and we talked about he had worked in Ohio and
Happened to know quite a bit about Ohio myself. So
Interesting a conversation with him and then anyway, it made me think I like I totally forgot to tell you about
like
We recorded this day
I was leaving this place when this event that I'm gonna describe happened and I meant to come to the podcast and talk about it
I totally missed it so
I'm coming out of a coffee shop and this guy in this like Tahoe
With 20s like big five spoke 20s. Wow is like okay ditching the lane on
Stark and he's going into the oncoming lane
And like at first glance it looks like he's just being a dickhead and he's like I need to get there faster
I'm going around everybody and so like people are like blowing their horns at him
But what it actually happened is that when he was pulling out around everybody he couldn't stop
His brake pads were falling out of his wheel
Like I I kind of they had their windows down so they're like cuz this guy and his girlfriend
They're kind of hollering at each other, you know in the Tahoe. Yeah, and I just like it's only happening like 15 miles an hour
That's good. So yeah, that's slow
And then you just hear these things clunk out and like I just kind of know what they sound like cuz you know
You do have enough times you've dropped them or whatever, you know, you're like, I know that sound
Yeah, you kind of like I know what about ways that and it would be falling off of a wheel right now
And it was his back brakes, but that's enough like to lose your back brakes
It'll change how your pedal feels. Yeah, cuz you're it'll take a while
You would have to do another pump to fully extend the piston and get your fronts to start to lock up
So it's like it'd be kind of a disaster. Yeah, it sounds real scary
So, I mean, yeah, he kind of seemed like he kind of got it stopped
But like they just like freaked out and took off like I wanted to be like, sir your pads
Oh
God, yeah, they probably didn't know what it happened. Do you think like do you think he was like
doing his brakes and just forgot to tighten his caliper back up or like the
The pen didn't thread in or something. I don't know
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, hopefully he didn't go to a brake place. I know, right?
That would be extra awful. It was it was pretty wild
It was not and so there was a guy across the street and he saw it at the same time as I did
We didn't like lock eyes or anything, but he was like even this guy was like his brakes fell off
You know, it's like when somebody like takes their underwear off without taking their pants off like how did you do that?
It's such a funny visual or it's like a funny like to imagine it in your head like you're and then his brakes fell off
It was pretty wild
You know like for it because they were just like the pads were just in the street
Yeah, so nobody got hurt right?
Nobody got hurt and they like blasted down Sandy. Whoa, so they went fast down Sandy like they went fast
They barely had breaks like took off. Yeah
Wow, I did feel bad that was pretty wild
No, that is pretty wild. What do you so you think that in order to do that? You would have to forget to tighten your calipers and
Or forget that pin
Yeah, it's like
Like was the pin stripped out or something like cuz I mean and I'm thinking of the earlier style where the thread is on the
Outside of the pin and the right side of the pin is in an O-ring and just in a hole
But I don't know what that talk is like. I don't know how to tap, you know, they change stuff up
So right it might not be what I'm thinking of right either way. I feel bad like you said like what if they had been in Les Schwab or something?
Oh, God, that would be it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Just wait just wait
Just lawyers at the ready. Oh, yeah, I see that Morgan for Oregon one all the time. Mm-hmm. Call him up
I hope he pays us for that. That was a really good spot. Let's call him in 10th of a second that we did it to 10th
Yeah, I was in a second. Yeah, we'll go we'll go to we'll go to him and play the recording and
Put our hand out listen. We have thousands of listeners. We haven't had a little uptick and listeners. Thank you
Yeah, thank you everybody. That's new. We really appreciate it. You know, it's a small gain
It's not a you know, huge numbers. We're playing a AM radio numbers for sure
But it's you know, it's honest work somebody's gonna do it. It's uh, you know, it's honest living we love doing it
Yeah, so here we are. Yeah, sometimes it's even funny even every once in a while. I hope it's funny today
So maybe I'll tell you something funny that happened here or something funny, you know
And maybe this hasn't happened to me since I moved up here, but mm-hmm. I got pulled over. Oh
Do tell that's right. I got pulled over you got pulled over now. I don't bad girl. I know
God
You know like every pulled over person
Sounds like I don't know where he came from
Because there was a police officer going by me like we met, you know, yeah
And I of course being you know freaked out all the time
Gawked and like turned around I for no reason like I'm turning on to my street. I'm just going home
It's like I act like I'm like, I don't know
Bails of bails of supergrass
Yes, if you're breaking all these laws, let me tell everyone
Oh, I'm traumatized by all that I've seen believe me Rose doesn't have so much as a ticket on her record
Never had a speedy squeaky clean never has been. Yeah
So sorry go on
Um, so, you know, I'm like
Of course in my van like the front's really low so so I just I turned the corner
I turned the corner on to my street and I'm getting pulled over and I was like what the fuck like
I don't think that guy could have turned around that fast. It doesn't make sense
But maybe popped his lights on and just did a yeah real quick you totally exactly could have happened that way
I could have been that guy, but either way it was interesting so
Pull over and I flip on my interior lights
Just put my hands on the wheel and he comes up and like me and taps on the glass
I roll it down and he's like, yeah, I just noticed that your tires were kind of low and
I just wanted to
Make sure that this is okay to be on the road
But seeing your tires are low when you first told me this I was like wait you had like flat your tires were going flat
That was the first sign that I was like not a car guy
Like that's just not even how you'd say it even if you were trying to play dumb and maybe like just get somebody to say something
You know, yeah, it's like that stuff like the boomer that I learned from at that fake restoration
car college, you know
talked about getting pulled over on the he lived in northern Ohio
Talked about getting pulled over in Pennsylvania near the border and he had air shocks and the guy put a tape measure to his bumper
And made him let the air shocks down and it dragged his tires and made him drive to the state line like that
What made him put the air shocks down? Yeah, because you couldn't be jacked up like that. He had a big old stink bug with the air shocks
So, I mean that this is like, okay, this is old stuff, you know, yeah, it's like Roscoe Pico train stuff
Did he like follow him to the state line?
It's kind of what he made it sound like
Use of the police budget sure there was no question of what took place that night. Yeah
So, yeah, that was Owen Hamrick. He was it was cool guy like him. He was friends with junior Sam at the known mega hauler for a while
Actually, oh
Friend of the pod. Yeah, a friend of the pod junior Sam it junior said he would actually talk about his time owning the mega hauler by the way
So, oh, yeah, we should get him on. Yeah, so anyway, so I'm pulled over and it's like feeling like this like safety inspection
I'm like what since when are they?
When are they doing this?
like I
Mean, I guess that's sort of their job all the time, right like the stewards of the road in a sense
Like that's a highway patrol is and at least in California's like they're the wardens of the highway, right?
So it kind of like it just sort of dropped my jaw a little bit that he would ask me this like I'm offended
But like also trying to be grounded and be like, I know what I'm driving like I know what it looks like and so
I'm kind of like a gas and I was like
Yeah, like
If he were a car guy that I would have told him about it, but I
Could just tell again by him saying my tires are low, but I know he means my stance is low
And he doesn't know what that means and he doesn't know that I've got stink bug
And he's probably not fully aware that I don't have any bumpers
Well, it's pretty obvious when you look there's no bumpers
Yeah, but it might not strike him because there's so much about it and he so so many things going on
Okay, so then
Then he's like are these government-issued plates and I was like
In my mind, I'm like isn't every plate a government-issued plate like
Yeah, I hope so not a sovereign citizen and I was like, no, it's just SP
And he's like, did you know they expired in 24 and I was like, it's my understanding that they don't ever expire
and he was like
Hmm
And they're there what and I was like SP plates and he was like SP and I kind of blanked on what the acronym was
but I was like, yeah a special purpose
which is
Kind of funny if you think about the jerk
Steve Martin learns his special purpose and he was like and what's it special purpose? And I was like, it's a classic car
What's it special purpose and he goes
This is a Ford, right?
I was like, I think he was looking at the Chevy hubcaps
And I was like, yeah, and he goes, do you have a driver's license?
He asked it so far into your conversation. It was so far in and I'm right when they come up
It's like license and registration. Do you know why I pulled you over? He had so many questions that we're like
So he's like
When he asked about the driver's license, I was like, oh, he thinks I'm a crackhead and I've just got this van that barely runs or whatever
I'm looking to park on the street for the night or something. And I was like, he's like, you know license. Oh, yeah
21 years going so
He comes back with it like a few minutes later
And then it's like like they had the wrong person or something. He's like, sorry
We just had a really slow return like I'm gonna be like, oh, yeah slow return slow totally so slow return
totally I hate when that happens
What the fuck's a slow return? I'm assuming he means that like it didn't come back
Who I was on the computer when he looked my plate up. Oh, I think it just means their computer was going slow
Yeah
So he was just saying whatever he could all that was his improv
What didn't he also say didn't he also ask if it was safe to be on the road?
Well, yeah, I did it. Yeah, he asked but that was improv all of that was improv to granted
You know, he like told me they were filming it also. So it was oh, yeah, because they have body camps
Yeah, I was like, I want this to be a good one. Like I want them to watch this back at the station
Do you think they'd be that like I pulled over somebody really funny tonight check out their five minutes
Yeah, probably. Yeah, well, I don't know why they wouldn't
um
It's just
Usual bullshit, you know, yeah
Like is this okay to be on the road? What?
I love that's my favorite part. I wanted to be like, yeah, I'll drive new york right now. But like I'm not saying anything
Is this okay to be on the road?
Like he was like concerned for your safety. Yeah, right
You tell me what are the rules? Yeah, I mean, yeah, sometimes I've had occasionally people who
Who do like, you know, they'll want to talk or whatever the big oh really like
This guy when I had the 85 and it had a one and 15 16th wrench like huge wrench
from somebody's dad who used to
Sorry, it was
My friend uncle mike and it was his father-in-law worked on big trucks
So he gave me this wrench as a shifter. We welded it on to my
Five speed my t5 that I had in this 85 Chevy van my second van
And I got pulled over in Ohio and this state trooper was like
What's with the big wrench and I was like, well, that's my shifter and he's like, oh, what?
And then eventually we got this point where he gave a wrench was it like a arm almost two inches just short of two inches
Oh, okay. So wait, that's not a very big wrench. It's a huge wrench. Oh, I thought you meant two inches long
No, two two inch not. Oh, okay. Okay. It fits on. Yeah. Okay. That is big. Yes. Huge. Yeah, how long was the wrench in length? Probably
Whoa
It was like almost two feet. Okay. All right. That is a big wrench
It was big and he thought I was just like it was ready to like grab and you know, I was like, that's my shifter
Yeah, he probably thought it could be a weapon
And so then he wanted to like he was like, well, can I come around check inside the side of the van?
I was like, yeah, that's fine. But when I you know, when I open the door, it opens up
You'll have to stand back and he was like, what?
He's kept doing that. What? Yeah, who what?
I think he just kind of checked out like he was like
I got you going a little bit fast and I had
295 50s on the back and whatever and he was like, it's probably just aftermarket wheels and tires you got
And I was like, yeah, you're right. I I wanted to change him before we left. I just couldn't afford it
Get back to something stock and
Oh, they were making you go faster
Too fast. I just I he said I was speeding and I said that my speedometer said I was doing the limit
Oh, and then he said, okay, I got any was like probably he's aftermarket wheels and tires. I was like, you're right
You're totally right. Yeah, you're so right and he didn't give you a ticket. No, I think I got out of that
Yep, sounds. Yeah, you have a clean record. Of course you got lucky on that one. Got lucky on that one. Yeah
That was just kind of shocking to me. I was a little bit surprised
I actually have a question about the wrench. Did he ask to see how it engaged in stuff? No, really? Oh, okay
I think I told him it was welded on and I think he was kind of out of questions at that point
Oh, okay. I think that satisfied his need to know probably making sure it wasn't a weapon. You're right. Yeah. Yeah
I think that's what he I'm gonna ask
Is that a weapon? I I did I did in arizona the guy went through like a list of weapons on me
Wrench he was wrenched one of them. No, it I think it started with knives and then moved to rocket launchers
Holy shit. Yeah
I've never been asked if I had a weapon on me. He was like, we see a lot of weird stuff here in the desert
You're not carrying any, you know, and he like he's got a whole ramble like he's practicing, you know
And he's like, yeah
Rocket launchers grenade launchers shotguns oozies, you know, whatever and I was like, nope, none of those
Not today anyway went through a hole went through a whole thing of drugs
And he's like, you're not carrying any marijuana methamphetamines mushrooms, you know, like acid to a rangel hair dust angel dust
whatever
You're not carrying any pasta antipasta today. Are you ma'am?
Oh
Well that illustrates my level of knowledge, uh angel hair pasta angel dust angel dust
He went through you know
Yeah, wow horse mass crack. I've not gotten pulled over in arizona, but I think it would be pretty scary
Well, he was like, what are you doing here because head kentucky license plates? Yeah. No, I think that they're I think they're kind of harsh
I think there are zero tolerant state even I wouldn't go through there with drugs
At all, but it would still be scary to get pulled over. It was eight in the morning
I had just burned one and I was doing like 50 and a 65
Oh my god stony baloney, of course I got pulled over
kentucky plates 50 and a 65
Oh
Did you have weed on you that? Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah
And that was in arizona
Wow, you're so lucky. I know another banner that said he got the same spiel as me
And when the guy like went through the drug list
That's about marijuana and he was like, I know I don't even smoke the stuff and the guy was like
Dwayne, are you kidding me?
He was like you smell like it right now
If he'd said nothing, I think because that's kind of what the guy was like it was like a wink wink like
Just gonna take you through a list of things here. You're not carrying any, you know, right?
And so when Dwayne got the same spiel he
Do you think he smelled like weed? Probably huh? He said he's just smoked in the car like
No, do you think that you smelled like weed? Oh, I imagine yes. I would imagine yes
That's I'm actually really surprised because I thought that Arizona was a zero tolerant state and that they would
Put you in jail for a long time for any kind of drug. I believe that's a fact
Yeah, so you got really lucky
Yeah
Oh my god, that's just makes my meeks makes my spine tingle
Yeah, just thinking about how scary that is. Were you scared? Yeah, okay. Yeah, yeah, and you well should have been
I got pulled over for my tent
For your tent? Yep a tent. Nope
The tent across the top of my windshield
Oh, the tent it was it was too far not a tent that you sleep in it was too far down the windshield
Yeah, this is messed up. I have a pullover story. Oh really? Yeah, I can't imagine you getting pulled over
The first year I had my transit on my go pullover nine times nine times. Yeah nine times
I'm just going to tell one of those stories though
So I just got in a new clutch and I had this is my first v8
And it needed a clutch so driving it I'd had it for like a couple months
And I didn't know really what it drove like because the clutch was really bad
So I got this new clutch and I'm like sweet. I was a bartender. I was like once I get off work tonight
I'm going to go to this closed kmart and I'm going to session that parking lot
Yes
Okay, do do do do and I'm all like dressed up because I would just got off a shift, you know getting tips
And so what time is it one in the morning? It's probably
three
It might be I used to drive a lot after work and it would be around like three four
So it was definitely late. I can't remember if I might have worked a day shift and then
But I think it was pretty late because I felt like it was safe to drive around those times of nights because there's not cars on the road
So that was my favorite time to drive. I get to the kmart whatever and I just fucking
rally
I just doughnuts left right all around everywhere
And I'm finally like, okay. I might not have back tires anymore
Wow
I'm gonna stop and there is smoke over the entire parking lot. It's just like the whole thing is smoked out
Yeah, I went only went nuts and it's and I was scared. I was like, oh man. I hope I didn't blow my back tires
So I go to pull out onto the street. I think it's a hundred and twenty second
And there's a cop right there sitting there watching me
Oh my god
And so I just casually turned he's like to my left. I casually turned right
Go up to the light, which is like a block away take a left
And of course he follows me and he pulls me over after the left as the parking lot was private property
It was something well, it was open to the public
But probably not anymore because it came out
I feel like you can't get a ticket in private parking lot. Kmart was closed. But maybe maybe that's just the essence
I think well, he so he pulls me over
And um, he comes to the car and he's like, is this your car?
And it's like, yeah
And then he's like he's like is something going on like are you going through a breakup or
Oh, that's so sweet. Like he was like concerned for my mental health. That's really sweet, I guess
And then I was just like, no, I just I got a new clutch
And I haven't really been able to drive this car like really drive it
Because whatever it's my first v8 and I said I'm out here at this time of night because I figured it's safe because there's no one around
And he's like, well
There's a lot of people that come from these apartment buildings because there was apartment buildings like around
And then there was a convenience store and he's like
People will walk across that parking lot at all hours of the night and you know, sometimes they may be drunk or whatever
And he's like you could easily hit someone and then he was like
You know, I could give you a reckless driving ticket
And like told me a little bit about that
And then he just let me go on my way. It was really nice of him. I told you he's given a $500 citation to a finger puppet before and then
When you said wow, he let you go
If you were thoroughly impressed he'd let you go
Yeah
Yeah, I mean definitely I was definitely sweating
Yeah, and I mean
I
Is this probably a privilege thing I didn't it's definitely a privilege thing. I do generally have
Good luck with cops
Oh, I I'm not even gonna deny for one second that skin color always plays a role into it. Yeah. Yeah, exactly
Not even gonna we know that's priced in yeah
And but I have had I mean I've had plenty of spinning tickets and like whatever and stuff, but
Yeah, so that's my pullover story
I tore up a parking lot and then I got pulled over
He was sitting there watching me. That's the best part is that as I leave
He's just like he just pulled over on the side of the road like watching what's happening
Yeah, I got I got pulled over in a small town once in a speed trap and I like went to the gas station
And like how's your day going? I was like, oh, I just got pulled over and she's like, oh, yeah, that's harry. He lets everybody go on sundays
Oh
Hand over indiana
That's harry. He lets everybody go on sundays. That's hilarious. Yeah, wow
I feel like you have a story from one of our engine
I do
One of our valedictorians he rebuilt his 305 for his camaro. I don't want to like say too much, but I think that he's
Got more car out of it
Awesome because he went to an edelbrock intake. He went to a bigger camshaft
He did rings and bearings. I don't think he changed the pistons
I think he just did the same like he just kind of shade tree like just a little ball hone and scuffed up the
Scuffed up the walls head gaskets, you know did his intake and everything and
I mean he talked like it's like it's a totally different driving car
Which I mean the aftermarket intake will change everything alone, but having compression
Having compression changes things quite a bit. So and rings rings will do that. So
Uh, Sean wrote me and asked me a really funny question
And okay, I want to hear it
I love when I get the questions like this
Because I think I think why Sean partially maybe why he asked me this is that when we do the engine class
I always tell people about this article. I read where this this I read this really funny article
It's like probably 15 years ago where this guy is like
When you buy a classic car you enter a hundred years blood war on a side that you didn't know you just chose
He's like so you get on to somebody else's turf and then they have to question you and then they're like 350 cubes
Four barrels. No six 10. It's got 10 barrels. It's got all the barrels
It's a funny article. I'm gonna look at yeah, I'm gonna look it up and see so I think Sean was asking me
In relevance to that
Because I think we talk about that usually in the engine class
He was asking about the astro and what we were doing with pulling the engine
But he said also, where do you stand on the war between the big three?
I notice you have a forward van with a Chevy engine personally. I think a cool car is a cool car
I'm definitely Chevy leaning but that has more to do with it being the most familiar to me mechanically
Because it's what i'm learning on
And I said
As far as the big three, I think it's like the stage is a grief
Denial is getting a Chevy you get one because your dad had one. It was cheap. It works
You're always rough on it. No oil changes only top offs damn thing does 400,000. You swear
It's just a car
But when it dies
You realize it was much more than that
Then you're in anger for letting yourself treat this great vehicle so poorly. You could have done more
You could have said you loved it. Oh
Then
You see a Ford with a 390 or a 460 and it's 300 or 500
And you're like, I can't afford that but think of the power
Mm-hmm. Well
I could I could maybe afford it. It sure would be cool to have that many cubes
This stage is bargaining
You're convincing yourself that you can buy this ridiculous because they're out there
I mean, this is for real. We would see them on our like local craigslist in Louisville
It'd be like 390s and 460s and like full-size vans
And you're just like I would get six miles to the gallon
But you're like but it would riff and it's five hundred dollars
But you're like you already know going into it. You have to now buy gas for a 460
I mean when I had my 350 in my one-ton Chevy my first van my 83
Had 350 and 373 rear gears and the gas gauge was like a backwards clock
Yeah, and that was like the first time gas hit four dollars a gallon. Whoo. It was depressing
I made 300 a week then so
Oh, no, you can't afford gas and that thing. Oh my god. I had to get my old Volvo back
Which was not a not a problem. Anyway, okay that stage
You know convincing yourself you can buy this ridiculous big engine and afford to drive it
This is bargaining. This is the bargaining stage of grief
Then you buy the Ford and you love it
It has all the power in the world except to pass a gas station and you have to buy the gas
This is the stage of depression
Now you're doing it and you're driving it. So now you've bought the ridiculous car, but you do love it, right?
Again, I have to buy another car to drive. Right. I mean, that's the depression of it
It's like so then because you survive the Ford you start to see the natural beauty in the very deranged machinations of mopar
You start to learn their colors of their wiring code. You say, yeah, sure
Why shouldn't I paint half my battery cable orange or why shouldn't my drive shaft be bare metal and my control arms have zinc green primer
It's how the factory did it this stage. This is acceptance
That's you know, once you finally get to it and you like buy a mopar. I think you've just
You know, that's beautiful. I think that's how it goes though. Yeah
You get the Chevy, you know
Very poetic
Yeah, then then then you get the Ford and you're like, wow, no, I get it. I get the Ford thing now
When I would say for me it was working in
Allison's rod and custom
On the first car the hot rod I cycled
I say that because the body had been painted like 15 years earlier
And this guy couldn't get the shop to finish putting the car together was a 34 Ford fiberglass body
Then a 39 deluxe 39 master deluxe and so like that's like a sedan
Really beautiful car and that's when I started to be like, okay. I get the Ford thing. These are cool
Yeah, um, I mean they're like totally blue collar cars compared to like
Faye Butler loves Pierce arrows and that's like a much fancier car. So like fords are kind of like
They're a very very blue collar car
Yeah, yeah, they are super cool. I mean like
I wound up working on like 69 and 70 Mustangs for years at hot rod shops
There were two at Keith's I'd never even seen them before and then I went to Brad Starks and there was another one
We were working on one down there that was like a restoration
It seemed like everywhere I went there was like a 70 Mustang
69 72 year only body
Mm-hmm. Those are cool. Really cool
Remember we saw a Mustang too at the
With painted bumpers. Yeah
Yeah, and we were like everybody hates these
I think supposedly but I kind of liked it. We both sort of liked it. Yeah, I like it
I'm I don't know. I think it's just because you don't see him. I used to hate
Uh factory restorations now. I like them
I think I've talked about that before
We're like now when I go to a car show and I see a factory restoration. I like to see the original battery
I just go it's cool to see how like you would have seen it on the lot
Yeah, just because you see so many custom ones
Right. I mean it's hard work to do. It's a lot of detective work and it's is pretty inordinate, but
It's cool to see. Yeah, you have to really know what you're doing. Yeah, the moped part stuff
I was describing we'd had to do that on a kuda for somebody. It was a kuda convertible. He like bought this stuff
called rpm
And it was like real pure magic or something. It was like a wax that you brushed on with a heat gun
Because drive shafts supposed to be bare metal and then same thing the control arms from the factory had
The they had like half of them was zinc green primer and then the other half was bare metal
So I think we had to like paint them and then brush that wax overspray. Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Did you paint it like they would at the factory just you made it overspray or you painted it
As if it was overspray, but you painted it on Keith made it look like it was over sprayed
Yeah, I mean because it's like they would paint the ends of it and then half of it has overspray up it
So it was like fake overspray. Yeah. Well, I mean it was real overspray. It was sprayed. Yeah, okay
I mean you just yeah, it's not but it wasn't sprayed from the part that was it wasn't sprayed to Detroit robot. Well
We couldn't borrow that. What are you implying?
Yeah, we couldn't we couldn't get the rights to use the arm
Oh my so
I also had a message from
Ray Panaccio about the astro van
Ray is one of the astro creeps
Hmm. Okay, and you know what he was talking about was he has a 302 and his 302
Has a lifter tick he thinks and it was Chuck's 302. It was the machine
It's this mid-ford and it's pretty cool. It's got stuff stuck all over it and I think there's a bald eagle involved
It's a neat van. It's got some air brushing or graphics. It says the machine on the spoiler or the hood
Maybe there's like a bug guard
I don't have a great visual image of it exactly, but
Anyway, Ray was talking about he's like it's good, but it's got a lifter tick
And he's like when the oil pressure goes up then the sound changes. I was like, okay
I was like, you know, normally I'd tell you to just do it
But you can't get good lifters
Lifters ride on top of the camshaft if you don't know what a lifter is, you know valve lifter
So on top of the camshaft, you know, let's say you've got the lobe on the camshaft
The lifter is riding on it and it gets lifted up and the push rod is on top of that and it pushes the
Rocker and the rocker opens the valve. Yeah, that's how you get air and fuel in or that's how you get it out on the exhaust side
so
The lifter has on the bottom of it a two degree taper from the center out
And that is yeah, so it spins as as the lobe of the camshaft comes up
It turns a little bit each time about a sixth of a turn
You can paint nail polish on your push rods and then just turn the starter and watch them all turn
If you've got your intake off
So
I was like ray, I would tell you just do them. Wait, what is oh
backup
What is the purpose of them spinning?
They just do because of this taper but also so they don't they wear evenly. Okay. That way they don't get a track ground into them
That's what happens. That's the opposite is when they don't spin
That's when the camshaft winds up. They wind up destroying each other. Oh, okay
The the lifter will eat into the cam. Okay lobe
That's and then grind it down to nothing and that's the problem people have been having is that's a bad
That's a bad break in and that's why so many people have been going roller
It costs
You know almost three times as much
You can get a flat-tap of cam lifters for like 250 dollars
But with a roller it's like a thousand bucks. Maybe 1200 with
Holy cow. Yeah, damn
And then you got to refigure your whole push rod distance
Yeah, wow
But if you're doing that, then you're probably going to roller rockers
And if you do roller rockers, you got to get push rod guides might not be included
And if you're going to go to roller rockers, you've got to do threaded in studs
You can't have pressed in studs in the head because they might pop out
Wow a lot of a lot of details here a lot of project creep
Scope creep
It's definitely like a
If you're changing your windshield wipers, you might as well go ahead and do your windshield kind of thing
You might as well paint your whole van. Yeah, if you're gonna if you're gonna sharpen your windshield wipers
So what I told ray, I was like, you know, I'd tell you to just do it
But you'd have to find nos lifters. So I looked up nos
I because it's a 302, right? So I just like looked up nos 302 lifters
What do you think an nos set of 302 lifters is going for on ebay ford ford ones
Ford Ford brand, okay from Ford
nos
That's new old stock if you're not familiar with the acronym out there in radio city out there in radio city
200 dollars
Close
290 to 300 dollars
Whoa
For nos lifters. Wow, but that's where I'd spend my money because there is no premium lifter anymore
Right, I've seen I saw some talk a couple years back about somebody starting a premium lifter company because of this problem
for flat tap it
Did so somebody started a company, I don't know that it happened. I just remember seeing talk about it, but I don't know where it went
Wow, I didn't keep up with it. Wow. So it's like you're gonna just put the money
Or you're gonna go through tearing up your cam
Well, one of my co-workers told me that he was helping is I think his brother-in-law and he's got a numbers matching Malibu
and he had his engine rebuilt and they went through a lobe on the break-in and
I
Think they're breaking in the cabinet eight through a lobe and then that went into the oil system
So they had to take the whole thing apart send it out and have it hot tanked again
And he's like he's like so then we fit him, you know
He wanted it to look like the original engine, but I was like, we'll just fit you with a roller cam
And he said they went roller
You know and he said we basically went from having already spent six grand to ten grand
Because I think they wound up having to balance the whole rotating assembly after that
Whoa, you know
Because I think I think it tore up the crank. Maybe did he just not he didn't buy the expensive
NOS probably not
Yeah, I mean they just you know, or this is just what happens when a lifter goes bad
Yeah, when a lifter goes bad next up on fox when lifters go bad
Three camlobs wiped out
Anybody got the molly lube
You know that stock fox voice the america's most wanted guy. Yeah, no, you're doing great. I'm enjoying this. Thanks
Practice all week for that
It shows. Thanks appreciate that
It shows. Yeah, we're gonna have to uh
We're gonna have to do some stuff like that on your trans amp soon get that thing burning tires again
Yeah, you've got what a bearing that's gone bad. Well, first we gotta do the brakes on the corvette
Yeah, that is the good news is you got the bolts
I know that I said that I already got my last piece for the corvette and that was a total lie
Today I did get the actual last piece last piece and that is the mounting bolts for the calipers
Yeah, and I got them from uh bears corvette, which is a really cool little family owned
Corvette specialty shop in pennsylvania. We've actually been super busy in the shop. We pulled the engine from my astro van
That was awesome. We crept right up on it one night
And we were trying to do it because we were like rain's coming and
We we hit 10 30 and I was like we're gonna have to put this thing away because of the rain
And there's like cracks in the sidewalk and grass on the way to where it was gonna live
So thankfully we called it and then I worked on a new lifting plate for the throttle body intake
She nailed it. We needed to be so close to the intake. It's so tight in the astro van
Yeah, we could not have a chain. There was not enough links for it. So
I had to make a special lifting plate
No big deal
Easy enough totally killed it worked out. Awesome. It was perfect. Yep, and we uh
Yeah, I don't know we we thought we were gonna have to cut the exhaust, but we were able to sneak the engine out of the manifold
Once they were loose
So yep, it was perfect and then riso came over and we worked on moldy tea the model tea that were
Uh, this we're eking out. That's like a tribute to the ice truck. Mm-hmm
It's starting to take shape the whole idea. I guess the whole idea. Yeah, it's very thrilling
Like if you were playing a video game like mario kart where like all the cars kind of looks similar
But a little bit different and ice truck is the main character. We're the yellow car
Yeah, that's the idea. It's our car is from ice trucks world
Mm-hmm. Yeah, but it's not exactly the same. Nope
But it is of the same family and that that part should be obvious. Yeah
So joe came over and we worked on more ribs on the roof. We made an acrylic windshield
We haven't posted photos of that yet, but we did share where we cut the wood version of the windshield
Then we cut out an acrylic windshield
To just sort of start getting ideas. We're building this body out of just like flimsy wood at the moment
And then we were gonna glass it and sort of you know
Working into shape and probably take a mold off of it and I wanted to build a metal one
I don't know if that's gonna happen or not. Yeah, I know you keep talking about fiberglass
I know I keep well I keep I want to move forward with it
Emily's working on the grill on the grill shell
custom grill shell rizzo's got a wild idea, but
We're gonna keep that in area 51 for right now. Mm-hmm. It is a really cool part of it
But I don't want to like I don't want to give it away. I think it's neat, but I want to feel the
Show it visually
But it was good. We made progress on that. We're gonna make a fiberglass grill shell
Um for the moment. We're just trying to get pieces made. So we were trying to get a c4 corvette rear
And that was part of my ride over today. I was behind the c4 for a little bit
Oh, why didn't you take the rear from them? I know that's what I was thinking
I was coming up on it and I was like, is this a Mustang and then I was like
It really looks like a c4 then I convinced myself it was a Camaro and a Mustang
It's all together. Yeah, I went through so many stages of denial a Camaro sting. Yeah a cum sting. Whoa
Wow, the new Ford cum stain
Excuse me, wow, I'm gonna have to cut that
It's wildly and wildly inappropriate graphic
Oh
Okay
Back to business. So
So we were
Yeah, we cut the windshield made it out of acrylic and we got some more pieces made
And we are trying to get a c4 rear in from a corvette. We saw on a marketplace and we were waiting. It was perfect
And I don't know how marketplace works really
But I saved it and I couldn't find it. It couldn't find it again in my saved stuff. So I think it's gone
Yeah, I think that he just deleted it because he probably sold it and maybe just deleted the posting
And then I tried to look the guy's name up because rose had a screenshot with his name and it I couldn't
I wish that weren't true. I couldn't find him on facebook. I wish that weren't true
Yeah, I really wanted to I thought I thought that was her lucky break and I thought maybe we had like a week or two
We could
Yeah, wait a little bit. Well, we didn't we didn't snooze you lose. Yeah, we missed out
But yeah, we're trying to get a corvette rear. So if anybody out there in radio city has a c4 c4 corvette rear and whole thing
Yeah, we want it the kit and caboodle
And we'll give you bottom dollar
Exactly this this the bottom of the bottom this deal can't be shit for me. It's got to be good for me
Or nothing no deal
Well, you know all that good stuff aside. We did a gas hose on the van
We changed a little section of my gas hose that leaks my idle goes bad
Put it in your gas hole
We pulled the engine in the 67 changed a little piece of gas hose
We didn't pull the engine into 67. Sorry. We pulled the engine the astro. Yeah, and then uh
Once upon a time was the same engine
Oh, yeah, and then um
Yeah, we're gonna work on your brakes and then we've worked on the model t so we've got four different
There's a lot of stuff going on four different cars. We're working on gently sprinkling about yep
I can't wait to drive the corvette again
Wow
That would be cool. It'd be great. It's been way too long. I'm so sorry
It's not your fault. Well, whatever. Let's I mean my tools got stolen that was part of it
That's pretty lame. Also, um, honestly, I just forget. Yeah, I forget that I have it
I forget that it was ever a part of my life
and
Everybody I thought it was a good idea to rebuild the calipers because that's something you can actually do
And it wasn't like I took them apart. I cleaned them. I
Sam blasted them. I painted them. I got the seals in
And
Everything the pistons back in everything is ready to go
And then you know what I forgot to do is make sure that the bleeder valves would come off
Yeah, the bleeder screws were stuck and it turns out they couldn't
Yep, they broke off inside the caliper. Yep. It was pretty bad from that point on
I was like, well, I'll just I owe you a couple dollars. I'll just buy you some calipers
Yeah, so I just got new calipers, but uh, anyway, that was my this part of it
Yeah, I was like most people don't go this deep most people just buy the caliper
I just wanted to see how it worked. I admire I admire that but you know what it was
It's been too long. I know now sometimes you just check the smallest thing to take when you take some apart
Yeah, I'd be like that sometimes. Yeah, but anyway, we've been busy. We've been busy working on stuff
I hope you have too. Let us know what your projects are. Oh, yeah, damas. Yeah, of course
Again, thanks for all the new listeners lately and in case you don't realize that you've done been piled up. You've been piled up
