We've got enough Bluetooth and NFC and just straight-up cables at this point, like there's
should be no reason tiny, tiny microSD card should exist anywhere.
You only say that because you lost one?

I did have a bunch of kids in my house over the weekend.
As we discussed, you'll never find a microSD card.
You're just going to vacuum the floor and it's going to go click and it's going to be

I put this little dumb thing in my master universal adapter thing because it's larger.
It's got a cable like I can see it and I'm like, just keep it in there because you
can find that thing.

They should at least be brightly colored.

Yeah, we had 11, 12 kids in our house over the weekend because we were having a birthday
party for my son who turned 12 today.
It sounds like it's 12, one of those milestone birthdays.
I can't really remember.
It feels like it sort of is.
Really?
Because it's 13 when you turn when you're actually a teenager.
That's the big one.
Right.
That's the thing.
Now, 12 is no man's land.
I feel like it's just like the last year before you're a teen.
I don't know if that deserves any extra accolades.
Yeah.
10 is double digits.
She finally made it double digits and then 13 is the teenage years and then you've
got like 15 is when you can get a permit, 16 is you can get a license, 18 is
when you can tell your parents to fuck off and go into military and buy firearms and drugs
and all sorts of stuff.
Right.
21 you can drink if you choose to do that.
25 you can rent a car.
Then you do end up in a no man's land for a while too.
Yeah.
It's a double.
I didn't even have time to hit the mute button.
He's so sneaky.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
It's really don't get milestones until you hit your decades or you're old like you are.
Yeah.
I feel like this is my first milestone birthday since I was 25.
None of them have felt like milestones until this one.
How old are you now?
I'm 50.
I want you to say that again.
50 years old.
You're old.
I'm old.
Like 50 I feel like there's like you could make forties like I'm trying to like forties
the new thirties or whatever but like you can't get around 50.
By the most optimistic estimations I'm half done, like 40 you can be like nah like I'm
going to like I can make to my mid 80s you know relative of years that have made
it to their 80s.
50 like I definitely on the downward slope.
Yeah.
Like it's I have less going forward than I have behind me.
That's just how the math works.
Picking up momentum.

Maybe for a certain.
Certainly time is going faster.
So yeah.
It's I feel like fifties fifties the first monumental birthday in quite some time.

So I'm at my cottage and I literally hung out by myself.
Which a lot of people will hear and go oh.
No like I'm waiting for my entire family to come up to the cottage for Thanksgiving
which is going to be really cool.
We're all going to be up here and crammed in the house and unlike summer we can't
just go walk on the beach because it's cold.
So we'll play a whole bunch of games and drive each other insane and cook a
turkey and it'll be it'll be really neat.
But so I'm up here by myself so I made myself brownies.
Special ones.
Yeah it's the the regular recipe that we usually use but I looked around and this
summer my wife bought this 100 year old cake stand.
It's a yellow glass.
It's a beautiful pressed glass cake stand from the 1920s and I saw that and I was
like dude I have to make round brownies to send in the cake stand.
So I made I got out the round cake pans and made two round brownie things.
Actually got them to come out of the cake pans whole stacked them up.
Shocking.
Yeah I did the thing you can put parchment paper on the bottom of the pan.
Right.
Did all that so they came out stacked them up and I did it just because it
looked pretty and I wanted my brownies to look pretty for my birthday.
Yeah.
And then I got Chinese food and the Chinese restaurant moved if you've if you've
been to my cottage I always tell people to go to the Chinese restaurant.
Chinese restaurant moved buildings which was like shocking.
Okay.
Farther closer.
A little bit further outside town they're they're in the old Burger King
building which again means nothing to anybody but
if you come if you come to my cottage I'll show you where it is but I
still love I love the family that runs the the Chinese restaurant.
They've run it for at least 20 years.
Chinese family it's the only time you can go in and have like a super pissed
off seven year old take your order because they're mad because their
brother doesn't have to work that day.
That kind of thing it's so much fun and they had a special where you
could get your meal for free on your birthday
and so I went in and I got a combo meal for free
and then I gave them a big huge tip to make up for it so.
Because you're a good human being.
Yeah just because like like it seems like I was going to pay for food anyway I'm
like they they just took over the Burger King they need money.
And so like I wasn't going to not do that I love getting food for them I do it
a couple times a year so.
But also like you don't want to not get the free thing because it exists.
Yeah.
Yeah I know some people who kind of game that
like I know like Starbucks you can get your free drink I want to say
Dunkin Donuts does something like that that like you can almost like
drink and food hop your way around.
I would give zero shits about taking stuff from Starbucks for free
like that wouldn't even phase me in the least.
No it just seems like a lot of planning and
driving it's like maybe if there's like one or two
things that you really want but like making a whole big thing of it just
that ain't me.
I don't make a whole big thing of anything so like why would I do that.
Says the man who celebrated his birthday by himself.
Yeah but I mean I was happy got to eat Chinese food and homemade brownies
that I made so it was pretty red double stacked double stack of brownies
so I'm actually still eating them like five days later
I haven't finished them yet so remarkable restraint
and not too long ago you were
enduring tiny bikes for basically a 50 year old.
Yeah yeah so that was the thing is it was um
there are older people than me that that are racing out there but it is
it feels really interesting to be out there
actively racing against 11, 12, 13 year olds as somebody who is
I mean I'm almost as old as one of their grandpa's
like I feel like one of the young young women I race against
I'm friends with their dad but I'm also friends with their grandpa and I'm
kind of like right between the two of them
and that's a weird feeling. Yeah well I mean how old is your oldest now?
Uh 24. Yeah I mean that's 23. Oh Shannon's gonna be
pissed.
23, 23. I mean that's it's right in that territory so
yeah yeah really yeah I don't think I'm gonna be
yet but uh yeah you don't know yeah it's in that possibility thing so
turning 50 I've been thinking about turning 50 for you know like a year
um because it feels like uh like you say it does feel like that that
downward slope thing sometime between like if you between 30 and 40
it doesn't feel like you changed that much
and in all honesty between 40 and 50 I don't feel like I've changed that much
I'm I'm certainly more gray, a little more creaky.
You didn't feel like 30 to 40 was a big change? Nothing.
No? Okay yeah like nothing. I feel like I hit my stride
in my 30s like not that things got easier but like
I kind of at that point especially young 30s like
kind of know who I am kind of know what I'm about
sort of thing. I just raised so many children during that decade. Yeah you
were out of it. Yeah like it wasn't about me
and so because I didn't I didn't have any health problems
you know I'm roughly in the same shape that I was
you know between 30 and 40 could do kind of the same thing so like it really
wasn't about me. It was about taking care of the
children and I did that and they all got bigger
and I felt about the same and that sort of it sort of maps onto
how I felt growing up. I didn't feel like my parents
changed in the time that I lived with them.
Now they must have. Sure. But so you know whatever the 15-ish years that I
can remember that I lived with my parents
they're a static image to me. Yeah I could see that.
I know I that can't be accurate but I can definitely see how
that could feel that way. Yeah and so I do feel like
I was a bit of a static image for my children during that time as well.
Well you're even saying that you even feel like
you were static. Yeah yeah like I don't I don't
because my last kid was born when I was 32
and certainly between 32 and 42 that decade
I don't feel like like you I feel like you could swap me
completely one for the other and I wouldn't feel any different
and at 50 got some gray hairs.
I'm still wearing the same motorcycle leathers that I was wearing
you know six years ago so I feel pretty good about that.
Still got a good head of hair. I have a great head of hair
like I'm not even gonna I'm not even gonna be shy about that.
I'm doing good. Got a really good head of hair killing it which is
great because my two brothers are as bald as a peanut so.
Yeah I'm mine's like starting to creep
back but I'm still doing all right. Yeah you're doing good.
I'm wearing a hat. No I won I won the Punnett Square lottery
with that somehow and my brothers did not
and so I find that's slightly hilarious
but I can tell
that there's gonna be a decade coming up that's gonna hurt.
Go on.
I feel like there's there's a time everybody has the decade that that is a change
and we can see that with our parents our grandparents
um sort of you know like I say my my parents were static during a time
and then there was it there's a decade where it's like whoa my mom got old
like and it really happens during it seems like during a 10-year period some 10-year period
my mom it was really during her I would say during her 60s
she went from being the mom that I knew as a kid to being someone's grandma.
Yes I can I will concur with that.
And and everybody has that I remember I think my in-laws are more like their 70s.
My father-in-law especially seemed really static right up until his early 70s
and then and then you can really tell that that it's catching up with them
and so like and I don't mean that in any sort of negative way it's just sort of
inevitability right nobody's going to make it to 90 and be like
reminds me of when he was in college he's kicking it you know like that just doesn't happen.
We're gonna have that decade.
So I don't want to say that's weighing on me but I'm I'm aware of it.
I'm not let's say I'm not quite at the chasing youth thing but like a little bit.
You're saying it wouldn't be bad.
No like the more decades I can make without having it be that decade
I think the better it will be and not necessarily from a vanity standpoint although that's
that's nice. Did I tell you I got carted buying a box of wine for cooking like three weeks ago?
Where to God? Was it a dude or a woman?
Was a woman probably 10 years older than me so late late fifties?
I'm gonna say an old man thing but bless her heart.
I was I about hugged her it was amazing.
She's just out there doing community service man.
Yeah I was it was at the at the self-checkout at Walmart and I was like yeah whatever like
they'll just come over and look at me and swipe their card it'll be fine it was buying
a little box of wine to cook I don't remember what I was cooking with but it required some
red wine and it always makes it taste better if the recipe calls for it and so I do I click
it and she comes over and she looks at me and she's like you have an ID and it looked at her
and I laughed and I was like really and she looked at me and I'm like no this is the
this is the sweetest thing ever I don't know you she said you look good for your age I'm like
but do I I mean I don't for your age good that covers a range of options yeah but like I don't
there's people who listen to the show who know me I mean do I look like I need to be carded I don't
think I look great for a 64 year old I know for someone with for someone with seven grandkids
I'm doing amazing dude's got ARP membership oh my god that came in the mail too I did
I did the day the day before my 50th birthday my wife sends me a picture um of my ARP membership
card that came in the mail so excited I gotta go home and get it that's amazing
yeah so do you start getting discounts and stuff now I don't think so I think most of those
are still age-based I don't because you can join a ARP at any age no but I'm talking like
go to the bookstore you get the old person discount I don't think it's a 50 thing I think
most of them are like a 60 thing nobody's got time for that come on in this I know I'm in this
economy I'm I'm a little bummed like do I gotta so maybe 50 doesn't mean anything maybe it's
60 that starts to mean anything yeah yes you really are in like downhill no man's land
right now it is so I'm I'm I'm thinking that I don't kind of want to see how many decades I
can go before I hit that decade and so I was thinking about that like what do I do in this next
decade that is a positive towards that and I came up with something okay
okay this is this is my thing okay um this is when I said I said on the discord chat
that you and I were going to be talking about walking and you didn't even know it yet
oh are we we're there we're there we're going to talk about walking so I I did some math and I
figured out that it is perfectly attainable for me to walk 10 000 miles in the next decade
so yeah okay so save me the math 10 000 miles in well no save me from doing the math 10 000 miles
in the next decade thousand miles a year thousand miles a year so that's about three miles a day for
you know 333 days of the year so not every so which is about an hour a day for most of the days
of the year god you and I live different lives and I will fully admit that I have an incredible
life of privilege that lets me do that right yeah um well I'm I'm even thinking though like I made a
lot of trips back and forth to my saw today from from the back porch of this house like
I I don't have a health tracker or anything to count steps or anything but like
I kind of wonder you I'm sure you work you walk more than me accidentally you walk more accidentally
than I walk on purpose most freaking need to man I ate so much cake and crap over the weekend
cake is good it's we have three kinds three oh well what was your favorite uh I mean
Becky made these it was a Harry Potter theme this year okay which is wild to me that that franchise
like continues to be fresh still kicking um and the Becky came up with doing the sorting hat cupcakes
so okay so each cupcake was filled with a different color and you bite into it to find
out which house you're in oh that's a good idea that's pretty good those were those were good I've
I've never heard that but that is a really good idea so she did those I I really like those and then
she did a cake from the same stuff but with cinnamon toast crunch frosting because that's what
Willem wanted that's interesting is that a thing like can you just buy that or do you have
to make that no that's off the shelf wow um and then bought him a Meyer cake for his birthday today
that's a little smaller and straight up the middle sort of thing yeah so yeah three three types of cake
I love that yeah anyway so uh 10,000 miles yep so that's so it's it's an hour I walk about
three miles an hour roughly I mean arguably I walk a little faster than that but by the time I'm
60 I'll probably walk a little slower than that so I'll average out yep um and you know you can
sort of like front load days go walk six miles one day and and then I'll give you an extra day
off during it but it requires me to be consistent with a goal over the next decade which is a big
thing yeah um I also think that walking like intentionally walking is one of the healthiest
things that people can do as they age it's what it's what scientists and people keep saying just
walking climbing upstairs like picking things up off of the ground like those really basic
movements right so so that's my plan um I got a a 10-year diary I was going to ask how you're
going to keep track of this yeah I got a 10-year diary you open up so it's got however many pages
it takes you open up to a particular date and it's got five entries on the left page and five
entries on the right page and so you just put the year down for that date and then it gives
you five little lines to talk on and then you flip the next page in the next page so
when you get to the second year you're seeing you know the previous year and your entry for
that year and so it's it's a really kind of a cool format um and you know whatever I'm like
five days into it now so I've got a lot more to do how many miles have you gone so far I have
walked 39 miles in the last five days I walked nine I walked nine miles today you're really
front-loading here oh yeah I'm I'm on it also because I have nothing to do right now so um when
I planned on coming up so I'm basically at the cottage for almost the whole month of November
and when we had planned on that it was just like uh the oppressiveness of Houston
and you know then everybody's going to come up so I'll just go up a little you know I'll
come up a little early and I'll be up here for whatever two weeks by myself and um that'll be
fine and Shannon was fine with it because I got done with motorcycle racing and then like I get into
this terrible on-wee period where there's nothing to do and I mope around and who really wants me
around anyway so I was going to come up here and hang up by myself um had my birthday by myself
and it was fine and um so I've got all this freaking time so I can walk like three hours a
day so I'm basically walking and crocheting right now um I am being an old man and
I was telling somebody like all kind of all I've ever wanted to do in my life like if if you
asked me at various times like what are you what's your long-term life going like be a happy little
old man like those have always been the people that seem like I mean they got their shit together
just like that happy little old man he just like goes into the store and talks to people and
goes home and walks his dog does whatever like I'm like that's it that's the vibe I want
in the problem with being a happy little old man is you have to go through so much
shit to get there like your entire life see that's that this this could never be a topic
because it's really more of a rant for me okay go and I definitely don't want to
shit on people's experience and life and stuff but like the people I find
that I'm drawn to um like maybe not even to have a conversation with necessarily but just people who
just have this je ne sais quoi about them right it's are typically the people who have seen
shit the people who have been through like something truly difficult and yet they're still
doing a thing you know despite you know the horrors persistence so do I sort of thing
like those like those are the kind of people who have like they've been through and and I'm
not talking about necessarily like having witnessed a mass murder you know anything like that but
just like people who have been through genuine hardship just live live for 70 years and you've
got tragedy to talk about basically anybody yeah and and yet they choose to keep doing their best
you know just smiling be a ray of sunshine yeah it's it's shocking to me like it's it's good
and it's challenging I think to meet people like that and be like if you can be like that
yeah I know I can too so yeah that's that's what I want that's my I've I've always been
so happy to talk to people that like you say have made it through the horrors of life
and are just happy to say hi yeah it's great yeah so I'm not sure if it's 50 I can really
be a little old man I was talking to my sister and she was like visually I don't think you can
pull it off yet like you just are going to come across this middle age and way too
fucking cheery yeah to be honest part of it your hair is way too nice it's yeah I mean maybe not
right now but like I'm sure it's a little it's a little wild right now because like I've been
wearing a stocking camp hiking on the beach today so it's gonna get harder to uh to keep that up in
the what I imagine is impending snow before you leave it's gonna be off and on snow here
like I don't think it's gonna snow for real um I hope not yeah but um keeps threatening down here
yeah I mean like I woke up yesterday and it was like oh surprise snow and then it was gone by 10
yeah so um those are those are the best snows at this time of year where it's just enough to
look pretty but not enough to bother you at all and I'm kind of hoping that's how it stays through
Thanksgiving and then and then I'll head home um so I guess what let me do the the most
trophy thing ever in your old age uh any bits of wisdom you care to uh to pass down to
anybody who happens upon this podcast at your ripe old I mean not not not really like I mean you
you go through the like the traditional like this to shall pass thing like for the most part whatever
is a pain in the ass today probably won't be in 10 years um and I can't say that about everything
there's things that are difficult now that'll still be difficult in 10 years but you know
probably the thing that's bothering you most today eventually won't bother you
and that's a good thing um whether it's a true tragedy you know whether it's it's a death of someone
around you um whether it's you know your job like like if you have a true problem at your job
in 10 years you'll probably either have a different job or whatever that problem is
at your job will go away somehow um like most of that stuff tends to semi sort itself out just with
time yeah um and a lot of problems are other people who can also get other jobs and things yeah and
that's the thing is like some of the some of the worst pain in the ass people in my life just sort
of like wandered away it was delightful yeah um so yeah like you can like they say the horrors
persist and so do I like you can wait a lot of stuff out and that's hard to see in your 20s that
because you're like oh my god this is gonna last forever and it turns out forever is like a
really long time yeah like an astonishingly long time um and so most things don't actually last forever
they just last longer than you want them to yep especially the more you focus on them the
more attention you give them the longer they seem to last yeah yeah well congratulations you did
thank you i'm yeah i'm pretty happy i i did that i do appreciate the the old men that you hear
occasionally and you're like uh yeah how's it going and they're like just glad to wake up man
taking nourishment yep upright it's above ground yeah it'll be i don't think i can quite
say that at 50 but i can see where i will be able to say that eventually yeah there's got to be
some intermediate sayings yeah yeah i would love to know what they are because i don't feel like i can
just do like keep on keeping on man like that's like carry on my wayward son at that point i mean it's
yeah yeah i don't know i don't i don't have uh i try to have that many well so the the problem
is most of the my peers in my 50s a lot of my peers in my 50s still have kids that are
younger than my kids and so they're 50 years old and they're living a struggle that i'm done with
and so uh that's kind of a weird thing i actually at this point yeah i i feel like a lot of my peers
actually are almost you know grandparenty type people at this point though i'm not i'm certainly
not that now um so yeah it's uh it's interesting life is interesting actually life is really interesting
yeah can be yeah do you want me to tell you the super interesting things that are going on right now
okay well i think i can publicly talk about i mean i know but you know but i think i can
publicly talk about this now so yeah when i was recently uh in west texas with brian
like second day of my trip out every being of me wants to like butt in and just say the thing
before you do your whole like let me tell you a story thing just like spoil it you know i am like
when i start you might as well just like stretch get a drink relax because it's gonna be a story
seth is moving but i'm not gonna tell you where okay so i'm i'm riding in the world's
loudest civic with brian and we're doing doing race car stuff in west texas my wife sends me a text
and she's like i need to call you like is it is it bad and why does my wife need to call me on
like a random thursday in the middle of nowhere texas it's a good thing you got this wasn't
the one live because it's like well i'll talk to you in 10 hours because i can't hear anything in here
right and so um i called her and i talked to her and um her company asked her to move to colorado
and she said i should probably talk to my husband before i tell you yes
um which which i appreciate kind of generous yeah because i i think her initial thing was like
you know immediately to go yes and i hope my husband wants to come to
i mean it might have still been that but also and so i heard that and i was like yes
yes and so they her company acquired a company and they have an office in dorango
which is for for those that don't know the geography of colorado and fully admit i didn't
know the geography of colorado perfectly prior to this dorango is in the southwest part of colorado
it is the the closest region you'd think of is in the four corners region so it's right at that
intersection of mountains and desert and all of that stuff out there you know sort of south of moab
type thing a couple hours south of moab which is rad and it is not a place that oil
companies exist really but this one does for a lot of historical reasons so we're going to get
the opportunity to move to dorango and there was a whole bunch of other stuff that happened in
the middle because this is public company stuff there had to be like shareholder votes and then
they weren't sure if it was going to pass and so we were going to go but then maybe we weren't
going to go there were some roller coasters oh yeah like i was i was i'm sure a miserable human
being to be around and then i i could tell people but then i couldn't tell people and
then i wasn't sure who i could tell and it was and i was in i was out in texas or i was out in
west texas and then i came back home and then i had a motorcycle race and i had all my motorcycle
friends around me and a couple i could tell but a bunch of my couldn't tell and then i went to
michigan because i was like now i'm like i plan to go up there and i still didn't like we still
didn't know for sure and it really wasn't until right before my birthday that they were like
now like you're going you're going to dorango
and now we have to do all of the actual stuff that is required to move houses
which we haven't done since our our mid 20s yeah because you have lived there now for
25 years 25 years easy math now yeah it is and um yeah so so we've been in this house
25 years this january this coming january i think is when we as when we moved into the house and um
yeah it's a lot it's a lot i still have my youngest son is still in
in his high school the hybrid high school college thing so he still comes home once a month he's
still i mean he's still there we've actually made a he knows how we feel about living in
houston all my kids know i how i feel about living in houston which is like not my favorite place to be
and so we made a tongue-in-cheek promise that we're like look we're not going to move until
you're done with school when he started school last year and he's like really are you going to
stay there until i'm done like we're definitely going to stay there till you're done thinking
because like where else are we going to go of course we're going to stay there dorango
yeah it turns out dorango and so um um it's not we're not exactly sure when they want my wife
they're probably january um but i won't be moving to dorango in january um so i get to pack all my
wife's stuff up and move her to dorango and then i have to go back to texas and it's going to
be deeply sad um most somewhat because i'll be living in a different places than my wife which i'm
you know we do that part of the year anyway but mostly because she's going to get to love some
live somewhere else and i'm going to live in texas and that's not how it's supposed to be
i'm supposed to live somewhere else well she lives in texas that's what we've been doing
yeah you're gonna hate that i'm gonna hate it's i have to spend another summer in texas
basically yeah and she doesn't deeply unfair good for her you know good for her
so i have to fix all those things in the house that need fixing you know like the the parts
where i never did tile i was going to do like a tile thing in the bathroom or on the sink
and it's just been bare cement board for 12 years or something yep um i have to do that the
drywall that i hung in the stairs the hallway when my 21 year old was a baby
i kind of finished that as it turns out yeah yeah um the the spot on the back of the garage
where a tree fell on it last year and knocked knocked the corner of an eve off and sort of
smashed the roof on what we called the shed part of it i have to fix which i had to fix
anyway but now it's like well now i have to have to fix it yeah like there's a schedule to do it so
i've got this this obnoxious list of things that's not actually a list yet because i don't
really make less i just keep them all crowded in my head in a big pile of anxiety and do it like
that um i have to sell a bunch of motorcycles yeah um you've got some choices to make here
yeah um i have to in your you're gonna love this i have to do something with the Porsche
well that's not true you can't stay there it absolutely just goes with the house that's
the thing says like it's if you're going to make a choice be aware of all the options here
you could absolutely list that house comes with the lift and a Porsche on the lift
i would attract a certain buyer if yes um i'm probably and i need to find the right person
to send this to i'm probably going to send that car to get put back together
um i think my time and effort is better spent on the buildings than on the car
probably um and so i'm gonna have to spend like real mechanic dollars
to have that i think they call it a re a recommissioning at this point i mean you also
have what like eight months yeah roughly i mean you could do it and maybe i will maybe
the question is do you want to yeah i'll i'll have to i mean i have to think about that i have to
really look at at what i need to be what i need to be doing and as soon as nobody lives at home
anymore except me you know just living on a bare mattress on the floor whatever the hell i'm
doing um i may be more motivated to work yeah um it's it's easy not to when i have my wife to just
hang out with and i won't have my wife to hang out with so maybe i'll be maybe i'll be more
motivated but i like i have to sell some motorcycles before i even get to the Porsche
at this point so um yeah there's there's things to do so you are the product of your choices
at this point yeah and i've always i've always told my kids that i was like you know there's
when when you're when you're a kid you can be like uh i'm here because my parents said like
like my kids were raised in texas because we decided to live in texas you know my kids
do certain things because they did and i said at some point in your life you look at your
life and you're like no this is i am where i am because of the choices i've made and as someone
who just turned 50 years old it's awfully hard to look at all the stuff around me and and come up
with any excuse um yeah it like there's nothing that doesn't directly involve like no this is me
i i did this in in some form or another i'm i'm responsible for everything around me
and good for you yay so yeah life is exciting it turned 50 i'm moving um all of that happened
all about the same time sure it's color i was going to be so much better for you dude like you've
got mountains you could go screw around in you've got the deserts right there there's
around in there's so much i can drive more it's like two and a half hours away but if you
want to take more time i think you can drive from durango to moab completely on dirt roads
you do have a subaru now i have a subaru but i also have a a dirt bike
but turn signals on it so actually i might not have a subaru what so we're talking about this
oh boy and and there's a reasonable chance we're going to do a car shuffle and the subaru will
go live in durango yep and it's a durango vehicle let's be honest oh yeah like it's it's a hundred
percent like it should be a colorado vehicle and is this like your wife wearing your pants at this
point yeah she's a little like not as hyped about it i mean i think she's okay with a subaru i
i actually she was like hey but all-wheel drive and snow and i was like it's not going to be
that bad we'll just put snow tires on your car yeah and and she was like well i all-wheel drive
and i was like well okay then you could you could take the rev four back from from our kid who's got
the rev four and you know a five-year-old rev four with no heated seats and like it is a
base model rev four there's nothing nice about the rev four and she was like i was
was video calling her you could see her on her face and she was kind of like
i don't think that's where i am in my life options yeah we both know what's happening here right and
so i was like okay the subaru's got heated seats it is it is far and away the most snow colorado
vehicle that we own you put you put a set of blizzaks or viking contacts or like some
dedicated winter tire that thing's gonna pull itself up a mountain just fine it'll go through
any road that's still legally open yes um it'll be fine so i may end up back uh with the rev four
with my wife's pants again damn it um but it's it'll be a great work car for me to do all the work
stuff that needs to be done um tow my little trailer around get wood that i need do all
that stuff that i need to do to to finish the house it'll be a perfect car for that bring
flooring in i gotta put a bunch of flooring in the house um all those things i need to do so
it'll be great for that um but uh but yeah man life is weird one day you're in your 40s and the
next day you're moving to colorado just like that just like that and somehow this relates
back to cars i'm not sure how but like uh this is a car podcast roughly so um well we can do a
listener question oh yeah let's do a listener question to bring it around it'll still be about cars
yeah now that you're now that you're old and full of wisdom maybe you can answer this question
i'm so good at answering questions anyway are you kidding me um emet asked can you prepare for
the lows of racing how can how do you handle them how do you prepare for the lows of racing
how do you handle them my whole life is an my whole racing life is an expectation of sadness
yeah and you especially with automotive you started you kind of peeked immediately
and then it's all been slowly downhill from there well yeah but i expect to do badly
yes like that's just my my general vibe when i'm doing car stuff as i expect protects you from being
disappointed right and that's that's how i am i i'm not sure i would recommend that as a way to
health and happiness in racing just like go into it being like yeah i'm going to be bad at this
and meet your expectations of being bad like i'm not sure that's the best way to go through
racing but i think you have to go into racing with at least some expectation that that's going to happen
yeah and i think even then it's hard to like even if you expect to hit a wall at some point even if
you expect to have to replace an engine the reality still is different than you know
your expectations of what that may be you're never as prepared as you think you are for for me i i
heard this question and i immediately went to kind of the goals side of it so like how do you
how do you prepare for the lows of racing and for me it's kind of having clearer guidelines
of what you're willing to put into it in the first place like not only like what do you want out of
it but what are you willing to put into it because that would when something unexpected happens
you've kind of already defined what you're willing to do about it before you get there
one of those things where like you're like okay if i put the car into a wall
it's going to have to be parked if it's based on like a budget or time constraint sort of thing
absolutely okay like if you're like i'm i can give ten thousand dollars a year to my hobby
and however i play that out is totally cool and you know maybe i can e-cow to 11 or 12
but like that's really it yeah and you wad up an entire car and it's like
the kind of already pre-agreed like i've already had this boundary up
and i'm not going to go past it just because something unexpected happened yeah i think that
would be an easy way to prepare for something that is likely to happen if you keep racing at some point
something's gonna break small stuff or big stuff
you know hopefully the health aspect you know stays good because of it right but if you're
you know if you've got kids or if you travel for work or if you've got a significant other
spouse or whatever like if you have your guardrails up from the beginning like i am willing to do this
because if if your only goal is kind of the results and by the results i mean
all right i'm going to do six events this year that's a terrible goal to be honest
like so if you blow up five engines you're going to put the sixth one in
to make it to that event like it's that's that's a blank check that you have written
to your future or from your future self you know yeah um that it's got to be more specific than that
so that that's kind of where i went with this i do remember um when i when i spun
brian's car into the wall um in st louis and before the safety truck comes because you're
supposed to stay in the car till the safety truck shows up so i'm sitting there and it was like
i have to call my wife i mean you get back after i like i have to evaluate everything but i like i
seriously need to call my wife um and talk to her about this immediately because a whole bunch of
stuff that we had talked about theoretically just came just happened and so i call her and i say
i i hit the wall in brian's car and the first thing she says to me and she said
are we buying brian a car and that was her way of trying to evaluate like the seriousness did you
kill the car i you know i said you know i spun the wall i'm okay and then she was like all right
are we buying brian a car she did ask if i was okay first um i assumed you skipped that part
because we had talked about the fact that driving someone else's car on track
like that was that was a realistic concern and if i destroyed brian's car i was responsible for brian's
car um the end like like no ifs ands or buts about it by driving his car on track i accepted
that responsibility and so that's what she wondered she was like did you hurt the car
did you kill the car because those are different you know different financial end points to to our
day um and i think having having that relationship with your spouse is really important but you need
to have that relationship with yourself as well um like if you drive a cardinal into a wall
like you should know before that happens emotionally what that means to you right
and if you can't handle that emotionally you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place
yeah yeah it's because you don't like and this is a tough one because again like anybody who is
raised cars long enough something has happened right and like the idea of being prepared for it
like logistically is if you haven't been through that is unrealistic right if you've had to replace
a lot of engines and like you're with the team like you there are spreadsheets for that kind of
thing i mean that's the easy part to be honest um you know you look at any well functioning
endurance team and the way that they organize and prepare for mishap is astonishing but outside of
that again i just think it's knowing what without knowing the specifics of what could happen
knowing what you're willing to do about it before it happens yeah because you you get in
the moment and all of a sudden it's like well maybe if we do this we could move this around and
like we could make it out for this other thing might have to miss an event or two
you know after my ncm incident um you know besides being incredibly sore and like very very sad and
discombobulated um like i looked at the car and i was like i don't i have never done this before
but like it doesn't look good and like if this car is dead like i'm done racing for a hot minute
years yes yeah yeah um
yeah it's it's not like i could or was willing to was willing to put stuff on credit cards and like
like get another job and like you do all this stuff and like just throw everything into getting
another car right where other drivers would be able or willing to do a number of things i wasn't
yeah so yeah so i i think like emotionally prepare yourself for realistic eventualities
um i would say you know if you could financially prepare yourself for those that'd be amazing too
but nobody can i don't think anybody can financially prepare themselves for riding a car off
no well yeah it would it would take an enormous amount of maturity um and i don't i don't mean
to like crap on people but like most grassroots racers don't think to that level nor do they have
the means to do that right i don't think you could go racing if you really really thought about it
it would not not at our level anyway not the grassroots yeah thanks so
i hope that answered the question maybe it wasn't wasn't just us talking about terrifying things that
could could happen to you racing cars oh i mean somebody needs to i guess but yeah it's not a
topic of like around you know night time having to be here it's like you know we could lose
everything right it's not great but if those kind of thoughts entertain you uh you should join the
discord and um yeah i don't know share those uh terrible stories of moments of woe and uh nervousness
and things because yeah they go through all of our heads at some point they do we don't like
