You know what? For under $40,000, there are some absolutely cracking cars out there.

In fact, there are cars that are just a couple of thousand dollars that will make your life better.

And as far as improving your life, we're talking about cars that absolutely

nail their criteria. So they can in fact make your life better.

Also, you might be thinking, geez, 26 cars. How are they going to do this in this amount of time?

So we have a challenge for ourselves where you have to try to present

each of these cars in under 30 seconds each without sounding like a sped-up version of Buster

Rhimes. And we have special prizes and penalties if we don't meet the time.

Yeah. There's a little time. You'll be able to keep track of it.

You know, can this even be done? Can we do 26 cars at 30 seconds each?

Because that should work out to about a 13 to 14 minute long video?

Possibly, yeah. It doesn't matter. We can just change the rules anyway. It's fine.

Let's start with... I'm going to warm up here.

Let's start with what could be the greatest Volkswagen Golf of all time.

Okay. The Mark 4 R32 is quickly becoming a classic, but can still be all yours for

anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000, but prices are going up.

That 3.2 liter six-cylinder sounds epic and it pumps out just the right amount of power to have fun.

Okay. The interior plastics aren't aging all that well and a fastidious maintenance history

is critical, but it's still a classy and practical little hatch. And if well looked after,

it can offer great reliability. It looks hot. It sounds amazing.

It's truly a special car, especially in blue.

Okay. Next up, this thing is arguably the sweet spot in this model's history.

The seventh Gentaiota Hilux is modern enough to actually live with without the complexity

and endless electronics and modules that we have to deal with now.

A good SR5 can be yours from $15,000 to $50,000 and even with loads of kilometers on the clock,

generally still offers excellent reliability and they're backed by a huge aftermarket scene.

But for something special, track down one of the supercharged TRD models,

the kickoff from around $20,000. These things were so ahead of their time and an absolute

barrel of laughs. Also, we need to review one of these on our channel.

Okay. So these next cars used to be the Porsche you bought when you couldn't actually afford a

real Porsche, but these days, those in the know regard the 986 Boxster and 987 Boxster and Cayman

as the models to buy for ultimate bang for your buck.

And Jim, you don't even need one of the S models.

Even the lower powered standard models are just as satisfying and arguably easier to live with

in a 911 for thousands of dollars less, not just to buy, but to also own.

So why would you bother spending the extra money?

But the trick here to improve your life is to buy a manual.

Next up, it's any generation of Honda Jazz or Fit. They are great.

But our pick for improving your life is the second gen with a 1.5 litre engine

and a manual. If you can drive a manual, that is from five to 15 grand.

You cannot beat it for practicality in its class.

Plus, these are being used for more and more track days because they are genuinely great

to drive and they offer incredible reliability.

Also, the fourth gen hybrid does need to mention from 20 to 30 grand massively updated interior

and levels of equipment and its hybrid powertrain is genius.

Still ultra reliable, but with superb fuel economy thrown in.

Okay, next up, it's the car that BMW should have made to be the spiritual successor to the mini,

but Volkswagen got in before them. It's the up.

Okay, this surely has to be Volkswagen's most underrated model,

and it's also one of the best built and most reliable the brand has made in the last 20 years.

Being only available as a manual sort of killed it here in Australia,

but it's worth learning how to change gears yourself so you can experience all the fun.

Best of all, they are so cheap now because pricing kicks off from just a few thousand dollars.

Also, they look super cool, especially when they're lowered with a great set of rims.

Next up, we can't make a video about cars that improve your life without mentioning a Mazda MX-5.

But we think the pick of the bunch is the third gen NC.

It might be regarded as the worst MX-5, but we think it's the best car of all the generations.

Look, any MX-5 is great to drive, but this is the easiest to live with.

Plus, a simple suspension tune, it'd be one of the best cars you'll ever drive regardless of price.

And it's still ultra reliable and it's cheap to run.

Plus, like any MX-5, the NC has a huge and supportive community behind it.

Okay, next up, it's a V8. It's a real drive.

It can seat four adults, it's got a decent size boot, and it's a Lexus.

Of course, it's going to improve your life. It's the ISF.

Now, when you, these were cheaper than an equivalent M3, C63 or RS4,

but these days they're often asking more on the used market.

But chances are they'll be more affordable and easier to own than the Germans,

while still being just as special.

The cheaper JDM imports kick off from around about $40,000,

but prices do seem to be creeping up with mint condition examples now starting to surpass $60,000.

And it could be a potential future classic as long as you don't buy a

clapped out or completely abused one.

What happens if you take the engine and running gear from a Golf R

and pack it into a tiny little hatch?

You end up with the ballistically rapid Audi S1.

And it's a manual only, so you know it's a real faired income hot hatch.

Although the boot and the rear seat room is a little on the small side,

but fair enough, it's the size of a Volkswagen Polo.

Budget for a replacement water pump?

Watch out for the degrading plastics and fine women with a solid service history.

And for the 15 to 30 grand these swap hands for, you can make your life so much fun.

Now, as far as a Venn diagram goes of fun to drive, reliable, practical, great value for money,

it doesn't get much better than a Mark VII Ford Fiesta ST.

And I know this from experience because I have one as my daily driver.

Now, pricing here in Australia kicks off from a smidge under $10,000

and tops out at around $20,000 for something absolutely mint.

Okay, sure, the tech isn't anything amazing and it could do with a slightly more comfortable ride,

but the Mark VII avoids the Mark VIII's wet-built reliability concerns.

And a well-looked after used Mark VII with a mature and fisticious owner like me

can be a brilliant little car and certainly deserves the hype.

Next is the Honda Accord Euro, or if you're watching from the States, it's the Acura TSX.

When it comes to the sensible aspects of owning a car and just something that's a pleasure to own,

very few cars offer as much value for money.

Both generations can be outstanding used car buys.

The earlier might have the slight edge for sheer build quality,

but the latter might be a smidge more comfortable to live with.

But as long as they've been cared for, both can be completely wonderful.

Plus, there's a huge aftermarket scene.

They look great as a package for about $4,000 to maybe up to $15,000.

Honestly, it doesn't get much better.

Okay, look, we're just going to say it.

If it's a Hyundai and it's wearing an N badge, it is simply a fantastic car.

But if we had to pick one N car that's going to bring the most joy to your life,

it's got to be the baby of the group.

It's the i20N.

Now, use prices kick off from around about $30,000 and top out at over 40.

But for that, you're getting superb reliability, excellent build quality,

great practicality, and so much fun anytime you drive it.

Also, these are holding their value incredibly well.

So even financially, it might be a very safe bet.

Now, the Toyota Rev4 is about the only car that 95% of the population needs.

But if you want something a little bit schmancier that you actually want,

it has to be a Lexus NX.

For $20,000 to $40,000, you'll have the choice of a hybrid or just petrol,

all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive.

And they're all bloody wonderful.

Great practicality, class-leading build quality and reliability,

and they feel more special than the Toyota that they share so much with.

That means you'll have all the touchy-feely stuff

and brand appeal of a premium Euro SUV with none of their drawbacks.

Okay, newer small BMWs might have more power and be faster,

but they can also come with some of the reliability concerns of turbocharged Euro engines.

The 130i, however, offers classic naturally aspirated six-cylinder goodness

in the brand's smallest, lightest, real-drive platform.

That's surely going to improve your life,

especially when you consider you can get behind the wheel for anywhere from $7,000 to $20,000.

Plus, it's a five-door hatch, so it's still practical.

The support and aftermarket network is huge.

And while maintenance is absolutely critical with these,

and we'd be steering you well away from anything that has even the slightest hint of a dodgy past,

find a good one and it will improve your life.

Oil leaks aside.

This next car is way more fun than it has any right to be.

It's the Suzuki Alto Works.

We challenge you not to smile anytime you see one,

let alone if you ever drive one.

But aside from being outrageously amazing to drive,

these offer incredible fuel consumption.

They're actually very practical, yet so small that you can basically park it anywhere.

They're ultra-reliable and they're so cheap and all their consumables.

Actually, stop the clock.

Any Japanese K-Car will make your life wonderful.

Honda Inbox, Suzuki Spacia, any of the little trucks, they're all awesome.

Okay, now this is a massive call,

but we think the third-generation Lexus RX might just represent

the peak of mass-produced motor manufacturing.

Okay, yes, the tech has aged out,

but that's easily fixed with aftermarket Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,

but that's about where the negatives end.

You can have it as a four or six-cylinder,

but the hybrid 450H models just make so much sense.

Class-leading reliability and build quality,

effortless to drive, parts and maintenance are more affordable than the Euro competitors.

10 to 30 grand can get you behind the wheel,

and look, as long as it has a solid service history and has been cared for,

there's a good chance that the right Lexus RX will outlast all of us

while bringing more joy to you.

Now, this might be one of the most underrated cars on the used car market.

A Mazda 6 wagon will improve your life.

They look great, they drive beautifully,

they're ultra practical, super reliable, and they hold their value.

And they're loaded with features,

but still everybody buys the bloody CX-5 instead.

But a CX-5 won't improve your life like a 6 wagon.

The pricing starts here from around $15,000,

but I should emphasise, do not buy the diesel.

They are rubbish.

Trust us, stick with the petrol and the turbo petrol models,

they are just an outstanding car.

Okay, for the price of a honestly pretty average 370Z,

you can get a mint condition 350Z, stick with the 350.

They're just as fun to drive as the newest sibling,

and with the right history, they're also just as reliable.

But here's our tip for maximum life improvement and the full Z experience.

Stick with a coupe and a manual gearbox.

But a warning, plenty of these have been ruined with shitty mods

and dickhead previous owners.

But find a mint unmodified example with a perfect history

that should still ask under $30,000, and honestly, what a superb car.

Plus, good ones are surely going to be a future classic, right?

This next car might be the most slept on performance car out there.

It's the JDM spec WRX STI.

While the international 2.5-litre engines could have some issues,

the 2.0-litre JDM power plants are generally bulletproof.

They also rev harder and produce more power.

Plus, in spec's C trim, the whole car is lighter and even more aggressive in every way,

making them easily as impressive as the Lancer Evo 8 or 9 just for thousands of dollars less.

Pricing for the STIs kick off from about $20,000.

A spec C will be in the 30s, and for that money,

very few packages offer that level of practicality and performance.

Now, speaking of great packages, if you're after a great stereo package,

or accessories for your 4WD, like bar work or lighting, or performance parts,

Now, here's a question for you.

Why would you buy a Rolls-Royce or an S-Class

when for thousands and thousands of dollars less,

you can have superior build quality and reliability,

a cooler, vibrant image, just better value for money or round?

Of course, it's a Toyota Century.

Look, these things need to be experienced to understand

what an incredibly special car they are.

But while it will do wonders for your image,

it could also reduce your heart rate and your blood pressure

because very few other cars are so relaxing to both drive and be driven in.

Look, these are an absolute steal at the $20,000 to $30,000 they ask,

and very few other cars offer so much physical and emotional car for the cash.

You know what? Actually, a Toyota Crown does come close.

Our pick when it comes to which of the 16 generations

go for anything from the eighth generation onwards.

Seriously, they're all criminally underrated.

Basically, you're getting all the reliability and practicality of a Toyota Camry,

but with a rear drive platform and higher levels of luxury.

You can have 46 or eight cylinders, petrol or hybrid,

but no matter which, all of them have superb reputation for reliability and resilience.

If you're in the market for a BMW 5 Series or a Mercedes-Benz E-Class,

for the $10,000 to $40,000 crowns are asking,

these are a way better choice.

Okay, it doesn't matter which generation of this next car,

we cannot recommend a Suzuki Swift Sport highly enough.

For $15,000 to $35,000, the more recent models are the easiest to live with,

but for $5,000 to $10,000, the OG are still such a special little car.

However, for $7,000 to $17,000, the sweet spot might actually be the second gen.

But look, all of them are superb for reliability, they're cheap to own and run,

and they will improve your life more than you know,

because a Swift Sport doesn't just prove that driving a slow car fast

is more fun than driving a fast car slow.

These things prove that driving a really well-sorted cheap car enthusiastically

is one of life's great pleasures.

Hey, Ed, you know what happens when a car evolves over 30 years?

Yeah, what's that?

It gets really, really good.

Yeah?

That's exactly what happened with the NX Pajero.

Arguably nicer to drive, just as capable and easily as reliable as anything from Toyota,

Nissan or pretty much any other forward drive, just for less money.

We wonder what else you would want from a vehicle in this category.

Pricing for high-kilometre and well-used examples currently kicks off from about $20,000.

Mint, lower-kilometre and heavily-accessorised versions can top off at about $40,000,

but still, that's probably thousands of dollars less than the equivalent Land Cruiser, Prada or Patrol.

Okay, thanks to insane levels of depreciation,

you can now buy one of the most beautiful to look at, wonderful to drive,

yet easy to live with, supermodels of cars out there.

It's one of my favourites, it's the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

Now, we, like you, assumed the worst when it came to reliability,

but after researching it, aside from some electronic gremlins that actually aren't too hard to fix,

the Giulia can be a really solid used car option.

Yes, the Quadrifoglio is way out of the $40,000 budget,

but you can plant yourself behind the wheel of a two-litre turbo model from as little as $20,000.

Plus, in the real world, the four-cylinder is all you really need,

and even if it were to break down, which it probably won't, you can just sit back and admire it.

You want a hot hatch like a Golf GTI or a Hyundai i30N?

A Mark IV Focus ST might actually be the one that makes your life better.

Ford basically took all the best bits of the previous Focus RS and ST models,

drizzled in a little bit of Fiesta ST and ended up with a hell of a car.

Plus, being the end of the Focus Evolution,

Ford sorted any reliability or build quality concerns.

In fact, these things are proving to be pretty much bulletproof.

And thanks to it often being overshadowed by other hot hatches,

the most affordable ones are now selling for under $30,000.

For under $40,000, there are some absolutely mint examples out there.

And not only do these exude style and class,

and a level of just cool that modern mercs cannot match.

These are built-like tanks,

and proving that with the right maintenance,

they're extremely reliable,

which again is something most modern Mercedes-Benz cannot match.

This is the era of Mercedes-Benz

that solidified the brand's reputation for over-engineering

and impeccable build quality.

And the 190E might be the most affordable way

to experience the peak of the brand.
