A unique type of engine that uses spinning triangular rotors instead of pistons moving up and down. It is very smooth and can rev very high, but burns more oil and fuel than a standard engine.
The Toyota Supra is a modern, two-door sports car built for speed and sharp handling. It is made by the Japanese company Toyota in partnership with BMW to deliver high performance.
Car
Toyota WiLL Vi

The Chevrolet Corvette is a famous American two-seat sports car. The 1954 model is one of the very earliest versions ever made, featuring a body made of fiberglass instead of metal.
The ultimate luxury car of its era, built by Mercedes-Benz for presidents, kings, and movie stars. It was famous for using a highly complex high-pressure liquid system to power its windows and seats silently.
A classic vintage car that looks old on the outside but has been upgraded with modern parts underneath—like a modern engine, better brakes, and air conditioning—so it drives like a new car.
LIVE
Hey, it's Greg Stanley and welcome to the collector car podcast for another fun week as always. Thanks for joining me
If you're not on my newsletter, please shoot me a note Greg at the collector car podcast and you can see all my fun adventures
I mentioned some of them on the show
But there's a lot of stuff that happens that I don't even get a chance to mention
Now a couple of quick updates. I just had an incredible interview with Jonathan Ward of
Icon four by four fame the toyed FJs the Ford Broncos and such had a really fun time talking to him so much
So that my zoom was capped out at 40 minutes and while we're while I'm interviewing him
I'm like, I can't stop this because of you know a deadline of 40 minutes
So I upgraded my zoom account. So it's even longer than 40 minutes, but it was a really really fun
Fun interview now as far as the book is going really really well. I've already sold I think about 700
Excuse my phone there 700 copies now. That's pre-sale and post or pre-launch and post-launch launch
It's getting additional distribution. It was at the Ferrari Club of
America's national meet this last weekend and I found a vendor that's going to carry it at a lot of the indie
Races which is pretty cool. It is now on Amazon. It's in bars and noble.com Wal-Mart.com
What's interesting if you order on Amazon, it is a little more expensive, but it's actually thicker
So they must use a thicker type of paper
I would recommend you order it from my website because then I can autograph it for you
Personalize it is what I like to say two things that came from the Ferrari annual meet is I'm writing an article for Prancing Horse
Magazine the club magazine. So I'm pretty excited about that and then
Separately I was recently interviewed for the New York Times not about the book
But I'm hoping that I can mention the book that would be really really cool
Now I do have a new podcast segment that this is the first one. So please you know be gentle
It's going to be rough. Let me just say that up front
You learn as you go, right? So this new segment is called guess that growl
So I have six cars that I recorded the growl the exhaust note
Now some of them are more of a perv than a growl as you can imagine
So I'm still working on that. I had some audio issues. I didn't realize that when I was doing it
Even though I put the camera right up to the exhaust note. It was I saw in my microphone on my collar
So some of them are harder to hear than others. So I apologize for that and
Then one of them the very first one you'll hear the engine note very clearly initially
But then the exhaust starts buffeting the mic and so it was difficult to hear so
Let's go right now. I've got six different exhaust notes five seconds each
Now what I'll do is I'll tell you the six cars and you have to pick them out
Now this is not in the same order as the exhaust notes that that would be pointless
So let me give you the six cars that I recorded a 1972 Pinto a
1934 Duesenberg model J a
1968 Mercury marquee a
1990s I'm not quite sure of the year but a
Enos cosmos that you want to know what that car is listen to this entire episode
1995 BMW 475 i turbo
I had never seen one of those before and the last one's a 1966 Ford Mustang with a 427 engine
So one of some of them will be easier to distinguish and others
But yeah, let's get to the the first exhaust note
All right, like I said, that's the one with the wind buffeting but hopefully you heard it, okay here. I'll play it one more time
Alright now let's listen to the second exhaust note
All right, here's the third
Here's the fourth
Here's the fifth
And
Finally here's the sixth one now I'll play all these again here in a second and then I'll play them at the end of the episode
So here's all six again
And
Then here are the cars the 72 Pinto the 34 Duesenberg
68 Mercury marquee the 90s Enos cosmos and
The 66 Ford Mustang
So be sure to say till the end of this episode to hear the answers write them down and
Until then listen to my sponsors
Please support them and then we're off to the eyes on design show if you're a collector

Okay, we have previous podcast guests expert author JDM expert
Contributor to the enthusiast guy to collect the cars all around great guy Myron. How you doing buddy? Hey Greg? Great to see you
One of my longest podcast listeners, so I really do appreciate the beginning. Yeah. Yeah, it's great
I recommend it to everyone. We'll appreciate that well before we get to the incredible car here
Tell me about your incredible shirt. Oh, thanks. This is uh, we did the Nepan rally a couple years ago
And we did some touring around and we went one of them required stops that I I asked for was to moon eyes in Yokohama
The original moon eyes in Yokohama, so we had lunch in the cafe there tour the facility and I had to come home with
With an artifact from the Wow visit to Mecca. That's very cool
Well when you texted me I said I've come into eyes on design you texted me a picture of this car
And I'm like I have no idea what I'm looking at you said I'm bringing the Cosmo
I'm like Mazda and no, so tell us what are we looking at here? No, but yes, you know, it was a brand that Mazda
Oh, oh you do it. Let's get this on camera. All right. Let's get this on camera here
No, thank you
Under the wiper, okay, so you will be invited in the parade
Oh, super wait for you to call for 30 number and you will be going all the way awesome
Oh, thank you very much. Thank you so much
Thanks. Thank you so much guys and gals. This is awesome. Oh, yeah
Appreciate it. We'll see you up at the judge and I'll tell Rich that we met
No, this is perfect great content, right? Thank you so much. Thank you my room. Yeah, yeah
Thank you. Thanks so much appreciate it. Thank you
All right, so nothing better than to be interrupted to get an award
So, yeah, you know what I don't come to this event for awards. I love the event
I love the spirit of the event and the judging and the whole spirit behind it and the beneficiary at the Detroit Institute of Alphamology
Because both my wife and my oldest daughter teachers the visually impaired so we come here to support the cause
But yeah, it doesn't hurt, right? So just for audio only what did what just happened and what did you win?
Just one best-in-class best-in-class blue ribbon you want to put that on the car somewhere. I can wait, okay?
All right, so let's get back to it. What are we looking at?
It's it's a Yunos Cosmo Yunos was Mazda's attempt in the early 90s to create a luxury brand like Lexus
This is where like infinity is really son
It was a Japanese market
They created a name for the United States called a Maki and they were gonna share it and the Cosmo was gonna be their halo car
Unique car
The only car ever built with a triple rotor
Wanko engine so it's got three rotors and twin sequential turbo chargers
It was the first car offered with oh my goodness
Just mapping technology and things so it's all like GPS GPS. Yeah first car with factory GPS
Wow, now do you mind it's right-hand drive
Automatic do you mind opening the door then opening the hood so we can see this crazy engine sure
Now where did you how long have you had it? Where did I had it for about a year about a year? I
bought it on an online
auction site I've been looking for one and
This one came by and it met my specs
It was great colors and the mileage was right and the price ended up being right now
The other thing I love about every time I visit you is what's the newest car?
You're currently driving. Yeah, so the latest it's oh, you know, we just bought a 2000 which this is a 90
We just bought a 2000 will be I which is a car that my wife saw in the Toyota Museum about a year and a half ago
She asked me why we didn't have one that just became legal legal to import
So we have a will be I now so your newest car that you drive on a daily basis is a 2000 JDM
Yeah, right. Yeah, I love that. All right. Do you mind popping the hood? Yeah, sure
So a lot of people would be intimidated
go ahead by a
car such as this is it had the reliability of
Get it. Oh, yeah, they're perfectly reliable
So from a reliability standpoint, I've had you have you had any issues? No, I've had no issues with this car and you know JDM cars
Japanese cars as a whole are built to very high standard
So sequential twin turbo, mm-hmm three rotor, right?
So that sounds intimidating Mazda Pioneer the sequential turbo is because the rotary engine has very little low-end torque
So you need any and this car is perfect. This car was only offered with a with a four-speed automatic transmission
They didn't have a standard transmission that could handle the speed. So it's a four speed
So up to about 2000 it's pretty sluggish, but after 2000 it turns into a rural rocket ship. All right, Myron
As always, thank you for being on the collector car podcast. Thank you for your passion for JDM cars
Thank you for your contributions to the book and I really appreciate it. Hey, my pleasure and thanks for all you do for the hobby
All right, so I have Adam here Adam. What are you standing in front of?
So this is my 68 Mercury marquee that I've had for probably about seven years or so
Now interesting car you're a younger guy. This is a 68 two-door bench seat
What drew you to this particular car?
So I always thought it was just a cool-looking vehicle and they weren't there weren't many made about 3900 of them that were made in
1968 so I actually have two believe it or not I have this and I have a
Wellington blue and navy blue with a white top as well
He just happened to find two at the same time now. Has this been restored? No, this is all original about 50,000 miles
Wow 50,000 miles on it original paint interior top. Yeah. Wow. How'd you find this?
I found it actually it was on Facebook marketplace years ago. Really? Yes, so when you got it what kind of
Reconditioning needed to happen belts and hoses had it sit for 40 years. Was it used daily? It sat for a little while
It needed I would say just general stuff carburetor rebuild some fuel lines belts
New AC compressor, but other than that. That's pretty much it. I mean I polished it and
But the paints original and the rest of its originals that was about it
So what drew this what drew you to this car?
I just always thought that they had a really neat look with the fastback
It's kind of the waning years of the fastback 69 the marquee became a more broad
Line-up so they got mercury got rid of the park lane
Okay, and the 69 the marquee was the range topper four-door two-door it's 67 was the first year the marquee was two-door only
68 it was still two-door only okay, not gonna marquee in four door. He had to get the park lane now
So what's the difference between the marquee and the park lane?
Park lane was just they actually had four-door hardtop of the park lane four-door sedan and a two-door fastback
But it was similar to the Monterey fastback different roof line than this one actually
So this one has a more formal roof line that was shared with the 67
Fords as well now did this come with a bunch of paperwork and documentation?
It didn't come with I came with some of it
But not a heck of a lot, but for Ford's you can go and get a Marty report after 67 and later
That's right. So thankfully one year later
So I was able to get that and have the window sticker now
Did you buy it from a collector was it like a little old lady that just drove it forever?
It was just I think it was actually somebody who inherited it
Oh, okay, and was selling it and didn't have great pictures. I went to go see it
It was in North Carolina the cars originally from North Carolina. So that's why I got it now
You mentioned off-camera that you have a YouTube channel. What is that?
It's called rare classic cars and automotive history. Oh, wow
So if you want to see interviews with some of the car designers and
And I have a quite a few vehicles. So this is one of the vehicles that I have so check it out
Well, tell us about your watch you have on there
This is a calculator watch because I'm in finance. So, you know, you got to make sure that you can count things appropriate
It looks like the 80s watches. It is it is they still make them you can get them on Amazon for about $20. Oh, nice
Nice. What do you mind opening up the interior and open up the engine bay? Take a look at this original car
Actually the trunk as well if you don't mind sure. Oh, wow beautiful interior
So despite the fact it's the top of the line Mercury it has crank windows it does have air conditioning
AM radio optional power antenna
Split bench seat with the full down center armrest. Wow. This is very nice
Amazingly disc power disc brakes and power steering were not standard. So those are options on this car
And yet you do have the factory option tissue box. Yes, I have a yes. tissue holder there
Wow
All right, so this must drive like you're on a couch
It does, you know, that was one of the great things about Ford's of this era was just the quality overall the door closures the ride
You know, it just closes very solidly
I have GM cars as well and Chrysler's but the build quality of these are actually pretty good compared to the GMs and for
Or sorry, GMs and the Chrysler's of the era. Now. What's under the hood a 390. It's a 390. They came standard with a premium fuel
390 Ford always called it the 4v4 Venturi so four barrel carburetor
315 horsepower there's an optional 428 for Venturi, but wow
This is so cool to see original. I mean you got the original padding underneath here
Yeah, that's pretty much all original. It is a newer AC compressor the one that was on it had
Given up by the time I had acquired it, but otherwise pretty original
Yeah, very very cool, and this is external oil filter here. That's a power steering cooler
Okay, because you were gonna be really a sport driving in a quite sporty manner in your Mercury marquee
Does have the optional wheel disc too with the red centers
Wow, and it came just like this, huh? Just like this. Wow great fine. Well. Thank you so much Adam. Thank you
No problem. All right. I have Jay here. Hey Jay. What are we looking at? What's behind you?
Well, this is a 1985 Euro 745 I turbo Wow, okay
I've never heard of a 745 I turbo. Yeah, how long have you had it? Oh just a few years now
I
Saw the car many years ago and kept pressuring the guy who owned it to sell it to me and finally he did okay now
Is it pretty much all factory stock everything stock except for I've lowered it a little bit
And it's got some slightly more modern wheels on it. Just I was gonna ask about the wheels
Yeah, well it looks beautiful now is everything function because I see the windshield wipers on the headlights. Yeah, everything everything works
As far as I'm I'm aware you never know with a car that's 40 years old that you're driving down the road
Something might change but as of right now not kind of what it's worth. It's running and how long have you owned it?
Like I said, just just a few years. Oh, you said that yes, okay
What do you mind opening the door so you take a quick peek inside and maybe pop the hood for us
So 85
745 I executive
Wow, I meant to drive, you know, somebody else around in the back. Oh, yeah, I see. Oh, yeah, you have the power seats
Yeah, you're the back. You can control the seats from the back
Wow, I was kind of shocking that this was a giant car back in the 80s
Do you mind opening the back just to see what the lap of luxury looked like in 1985 you go
With the buffalo leather buffalo leather. Oh, very cool
All right, do you mind popping the hood just to take a peek sure
745 I yeah, I like the wheels. Those are nice nice
Nice taste there just to get some more width on the tire quite honestly
Is it pretty much the stock engine? Oh, yeah, everything's stock here
I
Use a little wash, but it drove here today. It Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so straight the iconic straight six
Well, all right, so tell me what do we just listen to?
1985
1985 745 I turbo
probably about a hundred or so were imported I think to the US over the years and
This is one of them beautiful
Okay, eyes on design is all about design and this is really cool
So this is Rob Ida's concept cars now. This is a really cool called the black cat 1950 XK 120
Jag and it's really wild looking and I actually saw this at Concorso Italiano last year
Saw it come to the showfield early, which is really cool
But it's the last car I want to get to here which has a really interesting story
So just bear with me for a moment here. This is a 1954 Chevrolet Corvette
I'm not quite sure on the story on this, but it looks pretty wicked as a racer and then we have one of the iconic
Tucker's here
now Tucker's are very interesting because
famously they only made so many of them and
They were designed with rear engine
Helicopter based engine I believe and then what was really funny at the time
They weren't they didn't want seatbelts in the brochures because they didn't want to give the impression of unsafe
That you need seat belts
They have had the Cyclops headlight that turns with the steering wheel and then I'm not sure if you can see it or not
But there is a crash zone in the passenger side
So the theory was if you're about to get into an accident you actually jump down into that crash zone area for safety
No seatbelts, but you're supposed to jump down into that crash zone now
The car I wanted you to see is this one over here that they're detailing right now. It is a Mercedes-Benz six door
600 and I was actually at the Philadelphia Concord a couple weeks ago and the
the we judged a
Ferrari 410 Super America
Same colors as this and what I found out is that the owner of the 410 Super America?
Who won not only the class but won the entire show?
He had the 600 custom built to match
The Ferrari so it's the same exterior
Two-tone silver gray with the darker gray for the roof as well as the green interior
This is highly restaminated. I think it has an LS3 engine maybe but uh
It was restaminated and to match the 410 that I saw two weeks ago in Philadelphia
So I just had to talk about and show you this
Incredible build like I said six-door and I joked with the handler
I said you need to put the Ferrari on a flatbed and tow it behind this incredible car
So anyways really cool to see these
All right, that's the end of the interviews now. It's the big reveal for
I guess my growl now as you heard some of them were purrs. Hopefully that was a clue one of them was really loud
So here are the six again exhaust notes in the same order as before
And
Again, those were 1972 Pinto 1934 Duzan Marginal J
1968 Mercury Marquis a 1990s Enos cosmos which Myron explained what that was
That was a totally new car for me and then a 66 Ford Mustang
So what are your picks? All right, here are the answers
All right, Sam what exhaust note was that?
Okay, you're correct that was very smooth and quiet now. What was that?
It's a 1990 Eunos Cosmo with the 20b triple rotor engine twin turbo twin sequential turbo. That's awesome. Thanks, Myron. My pleasure
All right, George, what do we just listen to well, this is a stroke Windsor for 27
All right, what did we just listen to
So that's a straight four. Yeah, and it's an automatic. Yeah, perfect. Thank you
All right, what do we just listen to it's a 1968 Mercury Marquis with a premium fuel 394 Venturi V8
Dual exhaust dual exhaust perfect
All right, so tell me what do we just listen to
1985
1985 745 I turbo
probably about a hundred or so were imported I think to the US over the years and
This is one of them. All right. I hope you enjoyed that. I swear it will be better in the future
I learn as I go. I'll probably cut it back to five cars. I'll keep a mix of us in foreign as
Well as eras and engines. I'm not going to give you like three
Well, I don't know that might be kind of fun three Chevy
350 V8s and see how you do. I don't know that actually might be fun. All right, as always
Thanks for watching. Thanks for listening and I'll talk to all of you next week
You
