There's a professional radio. That's front wheel drive.
Have you got anyone you want to thank?
Just myself. And now I do the after hours,
gentlemen. What would you go for?
They see us in there, OK, And because it's not a super duck, it's not ordinary. Perfection comes in the form of
2 letters A&U. Long away of my Ltd.
Welcome to Car Talk. It's Tuesday night here in 98.9
NW FM. It's me, Maddie J in the studio
with Mr Alamdeep Singh, online with Mr Scotty Doe Johnson, Mr.
David Prince and Mr Jim Barlow. How are you, gentlemen?
Good. Thank you.
Happy to be here. Well.
Thank you. Well, Mark, thank you very much.
Very good to see all your lovely faces, gentlemen.
We'll continue with last week's topic of answering customers.
I want to say customers questions sound like I sound like we're super chicks that would presume that we're buying something from you yes, correct. Hi mum to the person that's
buying my my merch. So no, I our listeners of the
show who have been asking us questions to, to discuss on the show and, and we left off last week with another enthralling edition of, of Car Talk. But also we left off discussing
the, the best cars of the decade.
So the questions, our favourite car or the best car in our eyes for the decades from the 70s, eighties, 90s and 2000s.
So it did leave you with some homework.
But but we'll come back to that shortly.
You know, we just start the show every week with some car updates. Gentlemen, let's start with Mr
Jim Barlow. Jim, updates with you, my
friend. Welcome back by the way, again.
Thank you. Thank you.
I recently picked up the Pro lock, the pro lock that you got for me via David Prince when we caught up for a Honda event, which was really good. I've been enjoying using that
again and not feeling quite so at risk when I let the car warm because I'm like, well, good luck.
Apart from that now, nothing much really to report.
Carl's going fine. I have, I did sort of last night
when I was getting fuel. I thought, this feels like I'm
almost living here and I checked and I had been to the petrol station three times in five days.
So yeah. But other than that and nothing
really interesting to report there.
Is that because you're doing that many KS that you're emptying the tank and then having to refill it?
Or are you not filling it up? No, it well, I think the the
most recent one was like sort of three quarter tank, but basically it was I think 1000 KS during the week and then 200 for TAFE and then I think another 200 for the Honda meets, so 1400 in that week or something. Yeah.
Yeah, OK, that'll do it. Yeah.
Fair. Absolutely fair.
So all the other cars are still in storage Gym getting ready for a a a revival of some some description.
Yes. And I thought of one of those
when we get to the next part of the show actually.
So it reminded me about that so. OK, OK.
Watch the space. Watch the space.
Scotty Doe Johnson. How are you my friend?
Yeah, doing well. Doing well.
Car updates. Car updates.
You almost just may as well skip me.
Lately, it's just it's now come. On well, I just I got nothing.
I haven't done anything. I haven't even washed it.
It's a little dirty because it's just keeps raining.
There's just no point washing it.
And because in a new in a new estate, there's not many trucks going by on the roads and flicking up all the you.
Know. The roads are just a mud pit
anyway so yeah, just just just get all dirty again, especially since it's white so it's going to stand out even more.
Yeah, yeah. So yeah, just driving it to and
from work and that's that's it. I got nothing unfortunately.
Nothing. Usually it's a Toyota, so it
just starts when you turn the key and and just runs and drives. Yeah, nice.
How many K's has that car done now?
Oh I'm not quite sure because I've got the the readout set on how many KS how many kilometres I do every tank.
Yeah, OK. Yep.
Yep. So for me to double check out,
I'd have to flick, flick over to it.
But I like to see how many KSI kind of get out of the tank because you know, it's got the it's got the reading where it says when I fill up you, you know, it's 490 odd kilometres or something out of the tank. But I like to use the other one
as well. Just to seek it.
Accurate and kind of base it and just gives me a good rough idea of where the needle is at, you know, if it's at half, if it's at half a tank or something, you know, I've already got a pretty good idea of how many kilometres I've got left in the tank, whatever it says. Yeah yeah, it's a so it's a good
colour blade. I'm I'm I've I've seen a few
more on the roads recently. So like there's a few coming in.
No, no, but no. But I see why they.
Haven't made very many, where are they one from?
I I I know that's the weird thing.
Like I think it's Sakura, when we were there we saw like like 12 in a row or something that was there was nuts on them.
Yeah, there's a whole bunch of them together.
There's. Like a knife block of blades.
There it was. It was.
So you did it over Prince. That's that's, that's really
good. That's really nice.
I know in New Zealand they don't just get the the blade masters, they get the the ones with the 2.4 litre as well and that's 4
wheel drive and stuff and. That's some of.
Us say that goes all right too. But you, you can get there as a
manual from what I've heard, and I think it's a 2.4.
It's the Camry engine. Like the like the bigger, like
the bigger force, yeah. Yeah, bigger force cylinder.
That'll be that'll be still a quick car.
And that one's, yeah, those ones all wheel drive.
Yeah, didn't it be interesting? Yeah, 2.4 That's when motor was
also in the ruckus, I think, wasn't it?
It might have been. Yeah, it might have been.
I'm not. I'll I'll check that point.
And they're kind of all flooded in the beautiful New Zealand with all the great Japanese cars that we don't get here.
Yeah. Yeah, I'd agree.
So that's you, David Prince. Updates with you, my friend.
Updates with me. As of this afternoon, I have the
keys to a 9/11 GT3RS in my pocket.
That's because I worked on one this afternoon and left the dealership with the keys in my pocket.
Got home, had the keys in my pocket still to $750,000 worth of Porsche 9/11 and GC3 Arias. So you technically own it for
this evening? Because technically it's mine.
I've got the keys. I could just go and, you know,
take it off the lot. So, you know, but I rang them
and said guess what, you know, I've got these keys, but they've got a spare key so I can drop it in tomorrow.
But I thought, well, there you go, I've got a Porsche for the night. Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, right. You gotta throw the Snapchats
with the key. Yeah, that's right.
I should do that. I just should put it on the desk
next to, you know, next to my wallet or something and just say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Thanks for the heads up.
Good idea. Had two had had.
I went to AK meet up on Saturday morning with some VK Club guys, which was good. That was at a little Japanese
cafe in South Melbourne. There was an interloper there in
a Toyota IQ that's not quite AK car, but you know, we're sweating hairs here. Two guys in Suzuki vans and the
guy that sort of formed this club guy called James.
Lovely guy has got a Suzuki Alto Rs.
Oh, right, works, which is very cool, very cool.
That was very that was very cool.
So I've Saturday and, and then on Sunday we had a, as Jim mentioned, we had a car club event.
And so I've had the Rs out all weekend and that was basically my car for the weekend, The in one and Oh my goodness, the more I drive it, the more I like it. I'm, I'm very, very thankful
that I've got that little car. It's a cracker.
It's it is a cracker and it's so much fun.
It's so much fun. I mean, it's literally you can
use all its performance and you're not breaking the law.
It's great. You've got to get any speeding
camera fines. Well, you probably could if you
tried hard enough, but it's just it's it's just a really, you know, purposeful sounding little car.
But the guy that I'm forever thankful to the the man that bought it or lady might have been lady in where did we go?
Where's the Toyota museum again? Maddie Nagoya, Nagoya.
That's the word. I was in Nagoya.
No, Nagoya. It was from what knew it, Nagoya
Honda in Nagoya. And they spent quite a bit of
money doing the upgrades to it. And I think they've made it into
a crack. A little car.
Absolutely and interestingly, as I said, a real round the other night popped up in my feed. They just released an electric
N1 in Japan. They did, which is they
previewed the the sporty little E concept at the Goodwood Festival of speed. We checked chatted about that a
couple of weeks ago, but in September in their their autumn, they're actually launching the the regular N1 as an electric car in Japan. So that'll be interesting.
They didn't didn't set the world on fire with the E, which had quite a short range and was quite expensive.
So see a price for the N1, but it'll be interesting to see.
It's certainly getting to the point where I think electric cars are for the purposes in, you know, in a city where you haven't got huge mileages to travel and you can, you know, plug into solar power somewhere that make a lot more sense when you're not buying a great big barge of an electric car.
I agree. And I get what they were trying
to do with the E and I I actually really liked the Hondura. I think it's a cool looking
little car. I think it's probably one of the
coolest little cars to come out in the last, you know, 30 years.
Yes, it was too expensive, yes, the range was too short, even though it was marketed as just a pure City car.
And, and and that's fine. But I think when I think the
battery technology and everything that was around when that car came out, that car deserved better.
It, it, it, it just did. And, and now if they they're
contemplating doing that with, with, you know, your chassis in that, in that in one. And they, they, they say, OK,
well, let's do this properly this time.
I think that I think they've got an absolute winner on their hands because, you know, it's a funky looking shape.
It could be sold anywhere. It could be used as a Citi car
again. I think that's, I think, I think
they're this, this is the time that they're gonna get it right.
I think. Yeah, hopefully.
Fingers crossed. Absolutely we'll see how that
goes. Not that there's anything wrong
with it. You know, a Honda E like you
know, to drive and everything They're apparently they're phenomenal. You've driven one day like
they're they're they're really cool.
They're great cars to drive and second hand Now like a lot of electric cars in Europe, their their their resale isn't great.
You can pick one up for sort of mid 20s over in the Australian.
So about 12,000 lbs. Yeah, that's actually not bad.
That's pretty good buying. Now there's a second hand car
and a lot of them haven't travelled a lot of cars.
They haven't done a lot of distance because, hey, they don't do a lot of distance over there necessarily.
And the fact they primarily were a city based sort of car.
So yeah, interesting time. We might have to ask a question
for Christmas, so we might just come home with some hand luggage. Yeah.
So I was going to say to my sister because because she lives over there now. Like, you know, you can bring me
back, bring me back. You've got to bring me back
something. Yeah, that's right.
It's totally fair. It's only fair.
Yeah. So that's your carpet statement.
What's my characters? We're also joined by Rob.
How are you, Rob? Welcome back to Rob.
He's he's he's currently figuring that out.
I'm deep. Welcome back.
Mr Mr International. Mr Mr Worldwide just said we
should call. We should call you.
We should call you Pitbull at this point.
Just Interstate. So the funny part is, I'm going
back. Next week, yeah.
Well, I had a 60 a week, I have another 60 a week.
I don't mind it, they pay. So pay good, yeah.
Yeah, I don't have many car updates in terms of home cars, but they did get me a rental. It was a lovely Mitsubishi
Outlander A. Terrible car.
Look, it still had a prindle at least.
Prindle, yeah. There's a half assed prindle
but. Prindle a little less.
Yeah. So I believe it's the the
current generation just because the car only had about 25,000 case on it, I'm not assuming he's going to get an old generation a car, just keep it pristine.
Yeah, I had the 7 seater version, I guess 2 wheel drive.
So it's not the the base base model.
It's just one one rank above the base above.
So it's still 2 wheel drive, but you get the the the seven seat option, except my seats at the back were flat.
I had my location there. If again, it wasn't anything
inspiring A. Bit of a nothing.
Car. Yeah, it's a bit of a nothing
car. Yeah, surprisingly didn't have
wireless car play given the day and age I had to go and get myself. Cable.
A bloody USBC cable from Officeworks just to, you know, plug my phone in and. It's a work expense.
Yeah, charge it. Yeah, I did.
Yeah, I would do that maybe. But it's yes, it's it's like a
rental car for like a holiday, you know, especially if you've got an extra few people, you can have the two extra seats at the back. It's enough space for your
luggage. Otherwise, you know, and not not
the worst car around to be driving in terms of yeah.
Just. Kind of a holiday, that sort of
thing. I would probably not own one.
Just again, like you said, it's a very nothing card, nothing inspiring about it, but overall, you know it.
It got me from A to B, surprisingly, at the end of, I think it was about 3 nights I stayed.
Yeah, I stayed for three nights and I ended up filling up all about 11 litres of petrol, which I don't know if I got stooged by the person who gave the car up before me, but I was driving.
I'll just do the quick maths on here from the Ibis Mackay to my depot at work and I think it's only like 3 kilometres away or something. OK.
So. I walked on.
I could have, but it was a bit. Let's see.
Sorry, it wasn't, It was 3.4 kilometres, so I was driving
back and forth between there. Yeah, I went to, you know, the
shops and stuff and a few other places, but Mackay's not a huge.
Place. Place, they call it a city.
It's not a regional town at best.
And I'm just thinking like I didn't drive the car too rough.
I may have gotten myself speeding fine, but we'll, we'll, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
I was trying to see how well the the speed limiter worked and I kind of got out of a roundabout in the 60s.
Everywhere was a 60 zone for some reason.
Really, really found an 80 zone look like, yeah, so like as I got out of the roundabout, I had very quickly hit 80 and then what looked like could be camera car, hidden camera car.
I don't know if they the covert camera car.
They look like outlanders anyway, because they are.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it wasn't Outlanders.
Like maybe all the camera car, huh?
So yeah, it's like it wasn't all right, right.
Like I said, between the six KS I was doing back and forth between work for the three days, I don't think I should have had to fill up A7 litres or whatever it was. 11 litres you said?
Yeah, 11 litres. Sorry.
So either I got sued by the person who filled up for me or the car was really, really thirsty.
So, you know, unfortunately I can't give you definitive figures, but I'm going to probably get another rental, you know, as we went in on Monday night.
Yeah, nice. Most likely to be another out
because I just saw the just. The Sea of Outland.
Yeah, I saw their a little. What was it?
Who am I with six Avis? Avis.
Yeah, Yeah, I was with Avis and all their cars were lined up.
I was in their section. There was Outland, Outland,
Outland, Outlander. And then they actually had some
mine cars, like some, I think I had some Land Cruisers.
Oh, right. And a couple Hiluxes.
OK, so if you, you know, were paying the big bucks and you were heading down to the mines. Get a cruiser mat.
Yeah, you can get something better, but for my purposes I was just going to a bus depot, so.
Did they have any of what Rob's got in his background?
Pop Photo Jiminy. No Gymneys.
You didn't see any Gymneys? No rubbish.
Shaking his head. Yeah.
I think they're all reserved for Harvey Bay and places like that.
Yeah. Yeah, depots, but that was my
experience. Like I said, a pretty
uninspiring car. I did the job, I'm sure most
rental cars do the job and I did not unlike my Co worker nearly crashed into a tree. So that's that's the one joke we
did as soon as the red car was in my name.
We're like now I get to nearly crash, you know, but does the same. Co worker.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But she wasn't around, you know,
so, but it's well known in the in the in our work group that she nearly crashed the car. But we'll see what I get next
time. So I'll let you know.
I'll probably call in Tuesday's show next week.
It'll most likely be an Outlander.
So, you know, hold your breath. But yeah, that's about all the
car updates for me. Very nice, Rob.
I'm off mute. Awesome.
There we go. Yeah, updates with you mate.
How you doing? Good, thanks.
How are you all? Very well mate.
Well thank you car updates and not much.
Ford didn't call me back. I didn't call them back.
So it's been a week and a half now.
So I have to somehow chase them up and be on the phone for hours. I smashed my fuel fill a flat
cover on the transit. How'd you manage that?
Well the dog jumped out hastily and his lead grabbed actually clipped the catch the caught the side of the flat and just tore the top of it off and broke it off.
So anyway I ordered a new cover cover for the fuel lid.
So $20.00 for a new cover, but then I have to get it painted
and stuff like that. Not because it's painted the
same colour as the cards. It's not a flat black like the
rest of the the trim on the side.
So I got a little those little wire melting things with a little solar ironing and reconnected.
So I reconnected it with a wire welder.
How'd that work? It works real well.
Actually, it's it's strong. Yeah, that's what you want.
So it's just I could actually probably even repair it now, plus just do another Weld at the front and then finish it all off and repair it. But for $20, it's not worth
mucking around repairing it. Yeah.
Apart from that, drove the Mustang today.
Just took that for a squirt up down to Bundoora.
Still going. All right, I just noticed
there's 1.9% finance on new Fords.
They're giving them away now, so.
Don't fall into the trap. Rob, don't fall into the trap.
I love them, but I don't. Bored T shirt.
That's about it on the car front.
Very good, very good updates with me.
What have I done this week? Laser's due for service.
So I'll I'll book that in for next week.
It's it took me up to Malden and back on on on the weekend.
So that was, it's pretty good. When I was dropping out there, I
was like, I probably should have driven a nicer car on the freeway. I was like, I probably should
have driven the Typhoon today because the pool layers were screaming at like almost 4 grand at 110.
And just like as that was going along.
So that, that, that was all good.
No issues there. I still got to take it back to
get the gearbox looked at, which is was meant to happen today, but work's been really busy. So I want to try to do that
tomorrow or the day after then. What else have I done?
Forrester. Yep, Steph was like, oh, the
lights a bit dim. Well, OK, I'll have a look.
And one of the Hods is out. So I managed to get a pair
online cheaper than it was to get it through work.
And they're normally through work.
My price 150 bucks each globe, which is just insanity.
And I'm like yeah, now I got 2 for like 20 bucks off eBay.
So I was like, Yep, that'll that'll work.
So that car's I've got to swap the swap the wheels on.
I've got to swap the old wheels on it for this weekend because that's going to the snow. So I've got the other wheels
that fit with the snow chains that's comes with the car.
So that'll be off to the snow. And what else have I done with
my car? Oh yes, so Camry stuff, Camry
updates. So obviously radiators in now.
It's all it's all good. Happy days with that.
They've they've put it in it's, it's, you know, they said it's, you know, not leaking any anything anymore with that.
That's that's fine. Doesn't like a cold start at the
moment for some reason. So they're going to get to the
bottom of that. Then the exhaust is fixed.
So that's also done as well. So no longer sounding like AV 8
then I've so I've been trying to track parts for it, which has been, you know, a bit of fun. Managed to get some headlight
covers for it because one of them ones on the passenger side was cracked and I found one online and I messaged her I emailed her and I tried to phone her and she hasn't responded to any of my messages or anything. So I decided and that this was a
genuine like a genuine 1. So I bought a set which got
dropped off to Davidson Mitch's place of, of work today for, you know, like a like a new old stock kind of set for 50 bucks for like a like an aftermarket on, but looks very similar to, to the original ones with, with the lines.
So that'll go on until I can, until I can get an original one, if I, if I can ever find one again.
I did learn that the updates headlights are different.
So yeah, so the, so the update headlights are different.
So they, they're actually, I think they're shorter in length.
Yeah, they are shorter in length because because the grill's longer on the updates. So that's fine.
So lucky I bought the right ones.
I've got a dash map for it that came in.
That's, that's all ready to go. And I bought a brochure for it.
So it's, you know, all the, all the little, the little joys of of, you know, of car ownership are coming, coming to fruition.
So, so yeah, there was an Aussie Aussie market V6 brochures there. There was for the update.
I'm still got the following for the pre facelift.
But I did, I did, I did off Ed get the the dealer kit, like, you know, they they gave to the dealers.
So I've got that for it, which is pretty cool.
And I've been reading through that.
That's, that's that's a pretty cool thing for that.
So, so, yeah, that has been, that has been the Camry, Duncanry, Forester and Laser. Everything else has been fine.
Yeah, that's that's pretty much it with those.
Alan, you've got to go, don't you?
Yes, I do. I may be back a little bit
later. Cool.
He's got. He's got a meet.
He's got a meeting. A meeting, meeting, meeting
greeting. We need the quiz.
Yeah, he'll be. You better be back for the quiz,
Alan. He'll try, he says The otherwise
shenanigans will ensue. So though, yeah, there are my
updates, gentlemen. Now let's get back to our
questions that we got asked last week.
So we got asked last week, you know, some some really, really interesting questions. We've got a few more to cover
today, but the main one we wanted to cover was what cars, what was the best car from each decade.
So in our in our own opinion. So we'll start with the 70s,
gentlemen. So this is the 1970s.
What would be your pick of a car from the decade?
Now look, if you explain it, you need to explain why you need to explain and back it in because we're at the end of each decade.
This is how we're going to play it.
We're going to out of all the ones we've chosen like we do with, you know, car of the Week, which we're going to bring back in a few in in. So.
We'll vote on on the correct good idea, on the best choice.
So who would like to take it away and give us your reasons and why? There were the muscle I'll I'll
start. There were the muscle cars of
the early 70s, wasn't there the the Monaros, the, you know, the Falcons? So there's some a few cars
there, but one contender was contender was underrated and I thought it was the Valiant Charger, the E 49.
H yeah, pay charger H So that is one of probably the best ad campaign of any automotive car in Australia.
The E39 charger Rob, I'm I'm with you.
I think I'll say E 49. Yeah, it's what a what a what a
cool car. What a cracking car.
Just everything about it, just they're just so underrated and you could have picked them up for a song in the early days and now that it's worth a squillion. Yeah.
I think they're a great car. Would you go with with the the
265 or would you go for the engine with like AVAVA power?
No, no, no, no. It's the the 265 because that's
faster. It is faster, yeah.
It's it's faster than the GT phase three or or yeah, you know, the GTS. So yeah, it definitely was.
So I'd I'd be that that that'd be the pick of the bunch with the. RT Pack and the.
RT Yeah, and the and the. And the this strike pack across
the across the bonnet and across down on the front cards.
That's very good. No, I love how they used to say
6 pack on the back quarter. But yeah, with the, the triple
webers and you, you know what a that, that for me is like the, the, the godfather or the, or the grandfather of like the fast 6 cylinders that we had in Australia.
Like, you know, it, it, it proved to the, to, to the V8 powered world that, you know, 6 cylinder can take it up to you.
So I think, I think that that's, that's a, it's a very loved car, you know, like that. And and they they weren't loved
forever. Were they robbed like they like?
They just they were worth nothing.
I didn't even take much, how can I say it, consideration for him at the time either. Yeah, it's only after you
appreciate it, like years after, and you go, wow, why did I overlook this car? We were going in I, I mean, so
you've been in this car too, in, in Alfred Adams car.
He's got a 265, yeah. XX high patrol car.
And what got me about how that car was how smooth it was, like the engine was really smooth. It revved really nicely.
It it seemed like it, it felt, it still felt quite like a it felt like a good car to drive like it.
And I, and I've been in Falcons and you know, you know, Kingswoods and stuff, you know, Monaros of in that, of that same generation, they always felt a bit rickety.
The the charger just felt it felt tight it and it felt like it felt, you know, it felt good on the road.
I don't know if you felt the same way, Scotty, when you, when you went in that it was, it felt, it felt like a good car.
Yeah, definitely a good car. Yeah, and I think they were
better built than the Holdens and the Fords.
Yeah, I agree. I'd agree with you in a lot of
ways there, Rob. Not that they built all that
well right throughout the 70s, but but in the grand scheme of things, I think they'll just put together a little bit better.
What's your dream dream spec? Dream colour, Dream spec.
I quite like the the purples, you know, sort of really stands out. Yeah, an orange one would be
nice too. Vitamin C, vitamin C, vitamin C.
Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
Yeah. I like limelight.
I think they look really good in limelight.
I think that's a really. Cool girl.
Yeah, another nice colour. Yeah, hero colours they call
them, didn't they? Yeah, they did.
Yeah. So who has a Limelight charger?
So that's a that's a that's a tasty car.
David Prince, the 265. Yes, it is.
Yeah. You know, triple webs.
He's a mechanic of Porsche, so probably I'm going to sign a bit upon it, but yeah, yeah, it's with a wide interior.
The the tombstone buckets. Yeah.
Three 70s, yeah. I mean, you guys would have seen
these new, you know, at the time, were they, were they considered like a challenge or a threat?
Or were they just like, it's just a charger cause like, cause for me, like growing up seeing charges as, you know, you know, they were kind of like an old car, but, but always being into, into like all, all the stuff. And I always had an appreciation
of the charges cause everyone would would, you know, do the peace on. And, you know, like the whole
hey charger thing. It it for me, you know, Valiant
products never really got the got the love or respect, but the Charger kind of always did in a, in a weird sort of way.
And I thought it was always because of the bloody yard.
But, you know, you know, but people in the know reckon that was, it was a damn good car. What was it like in the time?
I'd say they were always seen as an alternative.
Yeah. Like a, you know, back then
people were so many Aussie families were holding all forward, you know, some of it you, you, you.
And it was like a like a sort of a bit, a bit bit of a spicy sort of contrast. You know, I remember a family
friend got a pacer, which is was a hemi pacer and it was silver with the black stripes. And I can, I can still remember
the night they came round and oh, do you want to go for a drive in? You know, do you want to come
for a ride? And I was terrified of the
thing. It was, it looked menacing And,
and I didn't go, I said, no, I don't want to go with it.
And and I think back now and it but it was just like, it was almost like that Stephen King novel, Christine, Christine It, it just had this real sort of presence about it.
They had the silver with the blackout panels and they had the black, the black pressed steel wheels.
Yeah. Cool.
And this thing. Yeah.
It really, it was it was like a spooky looking car.
I remember. But so from that point of view,
there was a point of difference, I think.
And you know, a lot of people, yeah, that Holden Ford thing lasted well at, well, up until they stopped making them really, didn't it? With too long.
With people, yeah so yeah, I I reckon they revive I I wouldn't say a thinking person's car, but it was like, you know, almost a bit non conformist, you know like most people were either Holden or Ford and and and yeah a.
A. Charger or a pacer?
Just showed a little bit of lateral thinking, I think.
Do you reckon it got the connotation of being a western originated gentleman vehicle? That's what I I that's a lot of
them and a lot of people will say that was the car for them.
Yeah, well, it was that a lot of new Australians is that.
Yeah, back then, yeah, I. Think the Greeks are on to it,
weren't they? They were, yeah.
They are on to it. They knew.
But that would that would more likely buy a Regal or a or a, you know, Regal 7070 or a Chrysler, like Chrysler, you know, or if they were, you know, real diehards, they'd buy a, a valiant range of three on the tree, you know, like.
Yeah. You know, the cheapest 1 you
could possibly get. But yeah, you know, there, there
was certainly an element of that too.
You know, that, that that's was, mind you, a lot of a lot of new Australians, and I'm using the term with fondness, great fondness, because, I mean, all that manufacturing times was built by them. But it was like, well, the all
the workers, I mean, back in the day, General Motors would advertise in Greek and Italian in the news.
Ford did the same thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, there you go. Yeah.
You know, to actually attract workers.
And they had, you know, I always remember people talking about, you know, the lunch room was, you know, the the Aussies hated to get the lunch room because they smelled of garlic and, you know, spaghetti bolognaise and all these weird foods that they'd never heard of before, you know, like, so yeah, I mean, it was, there was a bit of a bit of argy baji back back then around then. But yeah, look, it was certainly
demographic, but I think the charger and the pacer were a sportier option, especially they weren't V eights.
Oh, no, you could get the 380. You could could you?
You could get a 385. Yeah, but the 265 like the pace
of 265 and the Charger 265, I suppose some people would would have thought they actually competed more on on a similar line to an X U1 because they they weren't available as AV8 either. But but yeah, no, it's it's a
good call. Rob charges.
Yep. Yeah, I like that one.
Rob, what about you? Scotty, what's your picking?
Service Mine's the phase three all day, every day.
Oh, OK. All right, so now, now we're
going to get to it. It's the big boy, it's what put
Australia on the map. During that time it was the
fastest sedan in the world. And I'll just put in the chat
and then I'll talk about it. So at any time you can have a
read, but I think it was this article.
Yeah, yeah. That that did it, with the
picture thundering down. Hume.
Yeah, wild. Like that's that's one of the
one of the ways Walter stories. Have you listened to many
stories about that, Scotty? My God, it's a crazy story.
You know, 200 miles they travelled in just two hours travelling. It's hang on, where was it?
So cranking past 6000 RPM, doing 140 mph and just saying how how great it felt like it felt strong on the road doing that kind of speed back then. It just felt like it was made to
do it from what they were saying, like they, they just, it was just. Yeah, and just reading about
that when I was a when I was a kid and I just love the shape of it as well. That kind of boxy, boxy style of
it. It just looked like a true, true
muscle car, you know, true 4 door muscle car.
Because you know, we're considering seeing most of them as 2 door. But this thing Australia had
done well with it and just hiding how powerful that motor actually was too. Yeah, like I've mentioned it
before in the show about, you know, a lot of the the phase threes, the engines were like, you know, proper Bathurst engines that they put in them, you know, and and they weren't made for like everyday use, like they'd blow up just doing, you know, basic tasks. But but on the racetrack, that's
what they're made for. And just to see a car doing an
Aussie car on in that time that would have just that would have boggled the mind really like it. It still kind of does, you know,
from a car from that era, you. Know I mean it says it was doing
zero 100 in 6.4 seconds. Nuts back then. 19701971 that's
insane. I mean, it's, it's still quick
today. Like it's still, it's still very
quick today. Yep, that's just crazy for the
technology. I guess that was available back
then in the 70s, which wasn't wasn't too much.
And I guess for the size of 351, we're not talking huge ridiculous sized V8 either. Yeah, correct.
Yeah, No, no big, you know, 450 fours and stuff like that.
We're getting in. Yeah, we're not going massive
big blocks or anything here. There's no superchargers,
there's nothing on it. It's just that's just what it
is. And then after that we went
downhill. I love the I love the paragraph
after filling the Falcons 36 gallon, 136 litre litre to the brim. Just imagine on a bad day where
that's going to go. That's the petrol to fill the
tank. Oh.
Be there forever. Filling that up.
Jeez, it would hurt today, wouldn't it?
Yeah, that, that's a good one, Scotty.
That's that's that's a, that's a, that's a legend in in itself.
Yeah, I'm with you on that for you, Jim.
Can I ask if Dave could go first just because I've got through the neck and neck and my answer might sort of change after he gives his? All right, David Prince, it's on
you then. Well, I don't know that we got
the brief right. What was the what was the
question the most? Hang on, I'm gonna I'll just
read a stand out car. Yeah, pretty much a stand out
car for you in in of the 70s. There's a lot, there are a lot
to choose from. It was hard to choose.
It was a it was a good decade as far as cars were concerned.
It was a very good decade. There's there's plenty to choose
from at the at the great fear of becoming typecast, although I probably am already I'm going to say the Honda Civic.
Yeah, Yep, that that's that's a fair 1/19/72.
I mean, this company that had spent its spent so many years building motorbikes since 1948 and strapping war surplus motors onto push bikes and to become the the biggest motorbike builder in the world. And they played around with
these funny little K cars to mobilise Japan.
You know, once the the regulations came in after the war to give them give them a class of car basically that was cheaper to run and all that sort of thing.
The Civic was really their first world car and it did all right.
It went on to sell 28 million to current day, so through 12 generations. So I think I think it's caught
on the cars. I mean, the the Corolla, I mean,
obviously is a similar sort of story.
That was 60s that came out in the late 60s.
Civic came out in 72. Golf came out in 70 or 74
probably in in Germany. Germany, yeah, in its home
market. But yeah, I'm happy to be
typecast. I'll go to the Civic.
I reckon. Early Civics was such a
revelation at the time. I mean, when you think to what
else was on sale as small cars, we had a lot of BMC products still. We had, you know, Minis, we had
Hillman's, we had Roots Group products.
You had Datsun 72, you had a Datsun 1200, you had a Mazda 1200 rear wheel drive, you know, pretty space inefficient, really copies basically. And a lot of people would say
the civic was a copy of the mini.
Of course it was front wheel drive with an east West engine and and stuff like that. But it the cool thing about that
car was that it was pretty interesting, classless and it was reliable and it was fun to drive.
You know, it was a bargain. It was a cheap car that was well
engineered and fun to drive and, and became a huge success.
There are stories going around. I, I bought Civics, I've had a
number of them over the years, obviously, but I can remember buying them from people who said, and, and early cars and they said, oh, we, as soon as they came out, we knew we wanted one, you know, but it would be, you know, for the colour they wanted and the spec they wanted. It would be like a 18 month
wait. Oh, wow, OK.
Honda sales quadrupled within a month.
So the Civic came out, coming out and just went on to grow from there in Australia. So and yeah, that was that was
echoed around the world. They just could not build enough
of them. So that's a good call.
And they're up to 28 million of them now.
So I'm still building them. Still building them.
I like selling car in Canada for something like 12 years, I think. Oh, really?
I don't know that that's a great fact.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, that that would be
probably my biggest one of of many significant cars in the 70s. But does that change your
answer, Jim? Was that predictable?
Tell me, am I predictable? Well, that was one of my answers
anyway, so that was why. Great minds think alike.
So I'm I'm going to say, I'm going to say 70s would be civic for you. Then 80s would be some sort of a
chord. 90s. No, no, no, I'm very careful not
to not to have gone, not to do that.
Oh, I was just trying to make you laugh.
So in line of that, I'm going to go with the W123 Mercedes.
Good choice. Yeah, good choice.
That's a great choice. Yeah, I think that just sort of
epitomised what Mercedes became known for.
I mean, they had been building very robust, highly regarded cars before then, but that's sort of a turn on level.
And obviously because of the introduction of the waggon, it's sort of added that versatility to everybody.
And yeah, I think just a all round very good car.
I'm not saying it was the car that people who wanted to enjoy driving necessarily bought, but it was, yeah, if you, I think in period, if you bought one, especially in Australia, you knew that you'd arrived. So.
Well, I think that the 123 was interesting because it had a very long lifespan and like like 123I, I go straight to the 80s because like there was, you know, when they went, they went right into the 80s. But but they did start and they
did start in the 70s. And that's, you know, a lot of
people today even, you know, if you say, if if you say what's a Mercedes, they'll most likely draw 123.
That's like that's the thing that comes to their, comes to their mind. It's it's an iconic shape and
it's, it's an iconic car. Yeah.
I think that's, I think that's a great pick.
And it's not really fair to compare, I know.
But thinking about, I think when it probably came here comparing it to like say an HJ Holden, there's not really a comparison.
No, you could have bought 2 houses, couldn't you?
Yeah. It's correct, yeah.
I mean, Rob, you're, you're a Mercedes guy, You know, you've had a few 1-2 threes now. Yeah.
So a couple of 1-2 sixes or 11 sixes and 1/2 sixes.
Yeah. So yeah, they're the main ones
I've had. Yeah, and they've always, they
like, especially from that era, like anyone you talk to, Benz from that era was just just so well put together, like the the door thunks, the IT feels like a vault.
It's a tank, you know, and and they kept that philosophy for such a long time. You know, it's, it's a shame,
it's it's not the same now, but like those cars, you know, they were just built to last and now and now you, it's you buy a Merc. You bought a Merc.
You know that that's what that's what that's how I feel when you when you bought it, when you bought one of those back then.
So that's a strong one, Jim. That's that's a great choice.
Maybe Mr Bunting would approve that.
I think, I think you would have, I think you would have Buntings vote. The other thing actually true
that was rather embarrassing was when I first heard the category for this is I misheard what you said beginning in the 1940s.
So I had a list from the 40s up until 70s and then tonight I went, Nope, scratch those or I was.
Talking about them. We'll have to.
We'll have to do one for you, Jim.
We're going back a few more, a few more decades.
For me, I was like, I want a bit of left field and I've went for a first generation RX7. I, I think it's a very unique
car. It's, you know, it, it really
put rotaries on the map, you know, not that RX threes didn't, but you know, and, and RX fours and all that stuff.
But RX sevens were a proper sports car, you know, cheap, good balance, you know, Revi engine, you know, it was a different it, it was it that would have been a spaceship to work on and a spaceship to even look at and deal with back back in the 70s. Like comparing, comparing to
what else was out, You know, it made a lot of a lot of power for its, for its size. You know, it's for me, that is a
you know, it's an iconic car. Really it's it's such an iconic
car that not really not many people give the credit of how important that car actually was. And I think just for its unique
engine, you know, it's handsome styling and, you know, beautiful to look at. Beautiful car, especially in the
first generation. Yeah, even that the face slipped
with the painted bump bars. Not so good, not so much, but
just the the finesse of the, the design in that first car, that first generation car. They, they would literally like
something like a spaceship landing, I reckon in the late 70s when they arrived, especially in that, that minty green colour. Yeah.
It's just that that was the colour with the, with the dark brown interior beautiful. And like they were well built
too, like, like they were all put together and, and you know, they, they were, you know, for reliable for a Rotary.
And, you know, I was looking at, you know, cars that were iconic from, from that era and, and you know, everyone's like they talk about the, the Z, you know, like the 240Z, you know, and that's, it's a very important car in history.
And I and I, I agree that car deserves to be on this list.
But I was like, well, you know, they don't really talk about the RX7 in the same vein, but the RX7 was a lot, was a better, was a better race car. First of all, we had, we had a
lot more success on the track. And it really, you know, it
really pioneered this, this weird engine that, you know, that wasn't working for other companies and, and Mazda, you know, went on with it and that car proved to be successful.
You know, it went through another few generations.
So for me, the RX7 especially like a first generation RX7 is, is so iconic. And I think it's, it personifies
the 70s because it's, it's, you know, the 70s was a time of, you know, like the, if the 80s was a time of excess, the 70s was, was building to that success. And I, and I think cars like
that really kind of brought that message across.
So we've got RX7, GTHO, Phase 3, Honda Civic, W123, Mercedes and a Chrysler Charger or sorry, Valiant Charger 265 to be exact.
Do are we all standing by our votes or this is there somebody put a put a vote in that they've, you know, would have preferred or actually that that's a good pick?
I think Jim's pick of the 123 was was significant.
That's an important card. Yeah, yeah.
No, I'm stuck with mine. And yeah, I think, I think
that's, I think that's a, that's a fair call.
Robbie, you sticking with the the Charger?
Yeah, I'm sticking with mine. Jim.
I'm happy to go for the civic, so I'll just make it more complicated. I think we're going to get
nowhere with this discussion in terms of it doesn't.
I don't think we will. I think we just I think the good
thing is that we give a mix of significant cars from the decade. Yeah, absolutely.
Opinions. No, they're they're, they're
great choices. They're they're absolutely great
choices. Just the just just just on the
GTHO, the thing that staggers me about GTH OS, aside from the fact how many did I make? And then there's only three
times that now left because there are so many clones and you know, and, and the like, but the, the value of them is out of all proportion to how good they were, like what what people are getting for them. And The thing is that car only
has a market in Australia. Like it's a very limited market.
Well, globally there's no market for them because people overseas don't know what they are, you know, So it's just it, I, it defies understanding. And I, I hope they don't get to
that stage where the people that, you know, drove the prices up are lusting after these cars because they now they could afford them because they've got boomer money and all that sort of thing. Once they're not able to get
into them and drive them and all that sort of thing.
I just wonder if the, the value of them will plummet, you know, like it has with so many cars over the years, Because it's not like they can then sell them to a market.
It's not like an old Porsche or a Ferrari that's got a market all around the world sort of thing.
Unless you're the Sultan of Brunei who's ended up with like Commodores in his collection. And true, true.
He's having a bit of a sale. They just see the I did yeah.
So that just it was always fascinated me about them.
I mean, even, you know, Tyrannas and all that to a certain extent too, but they just haven't reached the the heights of the the GTA Falcons. You know, it's it's just just
nuts in my I think you're right, David.
They what I mean, what else would what else from that era or what else in Australian money has is is it gets that much money like nothing really like like some some G, some GT3, you know, you know, some some some 350 monaros, but don't get anywhere close to that. A nine XS, maybe an A9X is
something as close as a 9X is probably the closest thing from a Holden's perspective, But like nothing else really compares in in terms of and, and look, I guess pedigree too.
Like they did win Bathurst. They you know, the, the pedigree
is deserved. Like it's, it's, it was, it's an
icon. It's, it's a, you know, it's,
it's in the pantheon of the great, the greatest Australian cars ever. It's definitely it's definitely
in the discussion. If not, if not, as Scottie said,
if it is probably the best, the greatest Australian car ever.
So, yeah, it's got the pedigree, but like you got to you got to keep remember too like this car in comparison to like other cars around the world, like like a Boss 9 Mustang or a or, you know, gullwing Mercedes. Like these are these are, you
know, way more money than than anything than any of these.
So, you know, considering you're considering a market, it is a weird, it is a kind of a weird, you know, situation that that they that they find themselves in and they, and they do fluctuate in price. Like like they were, they got to
the $1,000,000 market and then they kind of just stayed there and then they've come down. And then.
But like, my worry is is because kids these days aren't really into, you know, stuff like that. Like, you know, and they don't
know about that and they're not educated about like, you know, who's going to buy these cars in 50 years time?
That's exactly what I'm saying. Yeah.
So 20 years time. Yeah, I'm going to go 20 years
time. Yeah.
Like you're, you're absolutely right.
So interesting one. Let's move on to the 80s,
gentlemen. So the 80s, as I mentioned
earlier, is a time of excess, is a time of, you know, glitz over the top, cocaine, you know, it's it white and white everything.
You know, if I picture the 80s, I just picture a picture like, you know, Miami in the, in the, in that, in that picture, like, you know, that's what I picture in my head.
What cars of the 80s are your greatest cars of the 80s?
Let's start with Scotty this time.
Oh, me, yeah, yeah. I was tossing up between a few
but I didn't want to be too predictable.
But I've gone for the Mark 3 supra.
Oh, OK, yeah. 80s yeah, it's. Such an 80s car.
It's so 80s. I guess it's kind of like back
there, this is the poor man's BMW, you know, the eight.
What was it? The eight. 850. 850 Yeah, poor
man's version of that one. But they weren't they weren't a
cheap car like like like a turbo Supra was was big box.
So they were still they were still expensive, but it ticks all the all the boxes that you wanted back then.
It's got your pop up headlights. It could get it could get
digital dash. So you could either get the
normal kind of analogue style, but also it came you could get the digital dash. It's pretty much put super up
onto the market. It did again, you know, and
something to kind of compete or not really compete, but kind of go head to head with your skylines and things, especially when it came to straight line speed.
You know, back then they were running down the Wangans and everything like that down the highways, and this one finally came out to kind of compete with it along there and you know, it had some succession in racing as well.
At the same time, it's just unfortunate that now they're just too expensive. Well, I mean, they, they're kind
of a bargain if you consider what they're, what they're up against like 30 like I was, I thought you want to say 32 GDR, but 32 GDRS are like way more expensive than than a, than a Mach 3 Supra. So I guess they're attainable,
but they're still expensive. I I get what you're trying to
say. And we did get Oz delivered ones
as well. So we did.
We have that. You know, everyone's always
saying oh, head gaskets, head gaskets.
But that can be easily fixed. Even with the same same engine.
You don't need to 1J swap or anything like that.
You can still keep it. But I guess not many people.
I guess it's just kind of a running joke, which is fine because the R33 running joke is that it's a boat, so.
A boat. So yeah, I think it's where the
Super started was with that one. You know, it's popped up in
movies as well. It played like a bad guy in the
in that movie series in Japan. Can't remember what it's called
but it was big in that one in some of the movies and it played like the bad guy role. One in black.
Black with like aftermarket gold rims.
Oh yeah. Perfect, perfect.
Yeah, I'm with you on that one. That's a that's a cool car
shrub. Sort of, I had two in mind, but
I'm going to stick with the 6th on the theme.
VL Turbo. VL Turbo Oh, OK yeah, yeah.
Fully sick. Yeah.
Uh huh. VL Turbo So so OK, Rob, why the
VL Turbo? Explain.
Had reliability, had a Nissan motor.
Did you? Yeah.
Did you own one? I wish I could never, really.
I never really had. It was the time of my life where
I didn't have enough money. I was saving house, kids,
getting to that point. I'm with you.
Yeah. So as much as I'd love to have
one, I couldn't afford one at the time.
But yeah, a few friends of mine had them and they're all fantastic cars and I've driven probably every iteration of them throughout the those years because we always ex Highway Patrol cars, all sorts of things.
So much fun driving them. We had a ball.
Yeah, they would have been. There you go, you go.
David, I was just going to say I made a lot of money out of the ex police Interceptor cars that still Ford would buy and they had holes drilled all through the plastic trims in them.
And I'd spend a day in them and just go filling all these plastic hole repairs in the in. The.
Holes in the plastic where they'd had their radios drilled into them and so. But you think this is AVL Turbo
with the steel wheels? It's pretty cool.
Yeah, yeah. So everything.
Yeah. I mean, they just, they went,
they stopped the ride too, didn't they?
I mean, they they weren't too bad.
They weren't too bad. No, you're, you are right.
They, you know, a lot of, if a lot of people from the, from that era and always said that the VL turbo, you know, BT 1, you know, cop spec car was, was their probably favourite high patrol car because it was, it was quick, it was fun to drive, you know, and, and they were quite lightweight.
Like they weren't a heavy car. Like like an early Commodore
wasn't a heavy car. So, so I mean, they had, they
had 150 odd kilowatts and that would have flown and that would have absolutely been stupid quick back then and smooth.
You know, that's the difference compared to the, the, the GM engines. I mean, at the time they did
have cooling problems, some of them didn't they, because the the radiator wasn't big enough or the OR the the grill wasn't big enough. I yeah, possibly.
They didn't mind, they didn't mind eating a head gasket.
But the The funny thing was the 31 Skylines never had that issue because they they the the cooling systems were just better worked out. I think it was that simple.
They had a bigger, bigger grill too.
Yeah. So that that the cooling was was
more efficient in in the in the Skylines.
Been plenty of people out there with 30 ones even today with them not even opened. Unopened engine running 300
kilowatts at the wheels. Yeah.
Crazy. No, I like that one, Rob.
I think that's, I think that's a cracker.
I think for me, I'd love, I'd love a Calais Turbo.
Yeah, A. Calais Turbo would be just.
Put up headlights. And they and they did a they did
a Calais turbo waggon. It did, which is like, imagine
how imagine finding that. Oh.
My God, yeah, that would be good.
That would. That would be that would be the
absolute that would be amazing. I just tell you a very quick
story about one of those. I had a customer, I still have a
customer, but back 25 years ago, he, he had a, a light blue metallic Calais Turbo and he bought a 5 speed executive and did a transmission swap to make it a manual Calais turbo.
Because no, I don't think you'd get the factory.
No, you could, they're very rare, but you could.
Oh, OK. Well, he, he wanted to build,
build 1 himself. And this is 25 years ago.
And he rang me about about 3 or 4 years ago now and said, oh, I don't know if you Remember Me, you know, you did some work for me years ago. You still yeah, I'm still doing
it, you know. Oh, I want to relive my
childhood. He said I bought another VL and
I knew instantly who it was and he bought a 5 litre V8 in Oh cool. And I literally got a message
from him today and about another car he's got, but he's but he said I just don't love it. I don't love it like I love my
my 3 litre turbo turbo. So we sold the Calais because,
all right, he'd spent a lot of money restoring it and paint and interior and getting it absolutely schmick.
But he said it's not, it's not the car I want.
It's not the car I want. But yeah, I I thought it was,
but it's not. And he's, he's on the hunt for
AVL turbo. Well, there you go.
Yeah. Do you wonder what during COVID,
Kello turbos were 150 grand. Do you remember that?
That was they were stupid money. I was like, who who's paying
that? Like, like that?
Can't that can't be real. But then again, they were
selling S 15 rolling chassis for 50 grand.
So yeah, yeah, that's, I mean, they're, they're, they're a cool carpet. My God, they're not 150 grand
cool. Like they're that's yeah.
Anyway, I like that one, Rob. That's a that's a cracker.
So we got 2 inline 6 turbos straight straight off the bat.
Jim, where where where are you going?
Or do you want to go, David to go first again?
No, George and Jim. OK I'll go.
I have actually got 2 joint I couldn't decide and I'm going to be a rule breaker so one of them is the prelude.
However I'm going to say both 2nd and 3rd Gen.
Second Gen because second car after the S class to introduce antilock brakes. Brakes.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
And then of course the third Gen with the first mass produced car to introduce 4 wheel steering. So that's one.
And then the other one because, you know, 80s excess and because I wanted everybody to tell me off making a poor financial decision is a Daimler 66. That's.
A good That's a cool car. That is the.
It's the 80s you've got to spend a bit of money from.
That is the gentlemen's club on wheels.
That's a cool echo car, isn't it?
Yeah, I kind of like that car to be honest with you.
I think that's such a cool car. The other thing about the double
the the the 66 was, oh, it might have been the Vanden Plough, which came a bit later. But with the 5.3 it had
individual bucket seats in the back, like it didn't have a have a bench seat. So it had the four individual
buckets. That was very cool.
I thought great if you knew a mechanic, yes.
Yeah. I heard a former salesman
talking recently that he had a female customer coming with one.
And she asked if he could write her an explanatory note to the police explaining that when she was in France, she couldn't possibly be doing 100 miles an hour because it wasn't capable of doing such a speed. And he said you can do that in a
second. They were so you could get them
with the the big straight 6 correct that's.
Yeah, the XK so just the just the game was 6 and then the 66 was the V12. V12, correct.
Yeah, the, the, the, that's right.
So, yeah, the V twelves in those were, they were, have you ever seen one of those like, like, like with the end, the bottom up though, it's just hoses and YS and it's, it's, yeah, we, I think I mentioned this before, but we, my dad was looking for a car back in, geez, 1999 and, oh, probably 2000 actually, when we had first got it, we got our first like proper computer with the Internet. So we, we were on, it was a car
point, I think it was back then on car point.
And they had this XJS V12 at, at a dealership on Sydney Road and it was $1999. And that's like, oh, I'm going
to buy that. It's AV 12.
So here's me and like an 8 or 9 year old going with him to look at this XJS and he they opened the bonnet and I was like, this is not the XF Falcon that I'm used to like it just it just had stuff everywhere. Then they proceeded to say, Oh
no, it's a typo. It's actually 9999.
And that's like, well, I can't afford that.
So we walked away. But yeah, I remember seeing that
that was the first time I saw one of those V12 engines.
I was like, this is this is nuts.
But yeah, cool car, very cool car.
All right, so if you go to pick one gym, but we'll come back to you because we'll let David let David say here's and then then you can make your final call, David.
Well, like Jim, great minds think alike.
I had I had two that I couldn't separate for totally different reasons. Again, from a choice of dozens
and dozens and dozens of cars. And I went, I was thinking
significant cars rather than, you know, the fastest or, you know, whichever one. I went to the BMWE 30.
Oh, Yep. And I went the De Lorean DMC-12.
Would you say that's the ultimate 80s car, the De Lorean?
The De Lorean, yeah, doesn't reflect well on the 80s If if it is the ultimate 80s, yeah, they're a terrible car.
Like I think, I think everybody knows that they're not great.
But in terms of just like what it represents, would you say that's the most 80s car? Yeah, pretty much.
Pretty much goal wing. You know who else was doing cars
in stainless steel? You know, like there was so
much, so much weirdness about it.
Protestants are as the Catholics.
Yeah. And that's right.
That's right. They're built in Northern
Ireland. They you mentioned cocaine
earlier. I think there was a lot of that
involved. Oh, yeah.
You know, John de Lorean was a bit of a bit of a character, I think. I think you termed it correctly.
There's going to be a movie made about him, surely?
There was, there is he. Was OK, Yeah, yeah.
I watched several. That also shows the power of of
media too. You know, like or not media so
much as the fact that that car was absolutely rocketed to success after not not success rocketed to people's awareness, I'll say, because they only sold 9000 of them, I think.
Yeah, not me, but up with the Back to the Future from franchise. I mean, everyone who was a kid
in the 80s knows that car because of the movie.
So I think that's pretty cool. And BMWE 30s, they say BMW
basically and handsome car when they came out, still a handsome car. I mean, Bob, Rob, Rob's got 1.
Still great looking car, beautiful interior, absolute object lesson in design. And I think I've mentioned
before on the podcast, but I somehow wangled a drive day I hadn't had my licence very long and I ended up at Sandown Racetrack for a dealership launch drive day.
And that three 2-3 at 2.3 litre straight 6 in the 5 speed manual
3 wheel drive. That was very good fun around
sat down. It would have been.
They made such a sweet 6 cylinder back then, didn't they?
Oh, beautiful, beautiful. One of those drives that you
think, yeah, I'll remember this for a long time and I still remember how how impressive it was.
Yeah. Never owned one or shouldn't, I
should say, haven't owned 1 yet. Yes.
But yeah, if you want to market at the moment, some of them are going fairly cheap. OK, OK.
I haven't, I haven't driven yours, Rob.
I'm gonna have to have a drive yours one day.
Well, come down in Geelong. When we go down in Geelong next
time for the revival, we'll have yeah down there.
We can go for a drive. Yeah, that'd be fun.
That'd be great. I think I'll go a manual 323I4
door with a roof. I reckon that would be OK.
Yes, that's your spec. That's my spec.
I always, I was very keen on Bowers too, for the reason that no one else liked them. Pretty much.
I like them. Well, that was certainly once
the once they brought out the factory convertible which didn't have the rollover bar that the Bowers had.
The cool thing about the Bowers is that not many people know is being that it was just a 2 door coupe with the roof, you know, cut off and it reengineered. It actually was A5 seater.
So it had three seatbelts in the backseat, whereas the factory convertibles were only two seater.
So when you had three kids, you know, my aspiration was, oh, we could all go out and you wouldn't have to leave one at home. Take take that one out.
Yeah, that's right. That's right.
And look, I can remember them getting down to three and four grand, you know, and thinking, wow, you know, I should grab one now, you know, And of course, now they're 30, you know, 2530 grand. Yeah.
So I miss missing a good miss for a chance there, but.
And it was a shame we never got the waggon.
The three. The E30 waggon was a pretty car.
Yeah, there's a few here in Australia now.
But there are. There are.
Yeah. They're all private imports.
Yeah, they are. Yeah, but no pretty car.
Unlike you guys. I'm torn between 3:00.
The obvious choice is the 89 DALTD.
Now I'm kidding. That's that's Rob's favourite
car. No, there's three and but I'm
going to pick one, but I'll tell you the three anyway.
W124 Mercedes because I think that's the ultimate, the ultimate ultimate, you know, sedan of all time.
It's it's, it's still today is just a wonderful feat of engineering of just how good Mercedes could be.
The Toyota MR2, because I own 1 and I think it's, I think personally it's the most 80s car.
It could pop up headlights. Same, same rule, Scotty, pop up
headlights. Like, you know, that's
definitely, yeah, that's, that's the that's the main thing.
But also like, you know, brought mid engine cars reliably to the masses. You know, like there were mid
mass produced mid engine cars before that, you know, they had the the Bertone or the as was known later in it's life, but the Fiat X-19. So, but for me, I think the car
that really dominated touring cars and was, was such an iconic car and it's legacy kind of went all over the world in different formats. Is the Sierra Rs Cosworth.
Oh, OK. So that for me is my ultimate
80s pick because the Sierra wasn't a very good car.
It was, it was, it wasn't liked at all when it came in.
It was very weird styling. And you know, everyone was like,
oh, OK, I don't know what, I don't know what Ford have done here. They they went, they went very
over the top with it, but then they brought out the, the Sierra, you know, Rs Cosworth and the Sierra RS500, which is, you know, still today highly revered car.
They made it actually look good. You know, it had downforce, it
had everything and it was and the reason why I like it so much. It was the blue collar hero that
took it up to everybody Like it beat it BMWM threes, it beat, you know, 190 Evos. It it, it dominated them
actually. And the reason why the other
ones were competitive was because I had to restrict this power from its turbo. They had to add weight to it.
And it's still managed to win. And it doesn't get the love that
the BMW E30 gets or the OR the Evo of that time.
But it was the actual the better race car and I had them had more wins and, and in terms of, you know, when it raced.
So you know, it's, it's an important car and very sought after these days. But you know, in terms of, in
terms of what it is and what it represented, the blue collar taking it off to like the, you know, up to the white collar, you know, cars in, in, in your beamers and your, and your mercs and stuff was, you know, was, was kind of kind of iconic.
And, and for me that that's, that's, that would be my pick from the from the 80s if I had to, if I had to have one, That's my ultimate, ultimate 80s car. We get to the 90s and I think
we'll leave it there for this week because we are running out of time. But the 90s, gentlemen, the 90s
is an interesting one. They had some really cool cars.
This is when for me, cars like this is when the Japanese really just took over. Like they just made some
phenomenal, phenomenal cars. Yeah, this is, you know, the
golden era as it's as it's known.
The 90s also introduced a lot of technology that we've got still today. And it was the first time like
cars kind of, you know, you could you could have cars reliable like fuel injection was, was really in in with the masses at this point. There wasn't many cars left with
with carb carburetion, but there still was carburetion went into the into the 2000s, but, you know, predominantly everything was was becoming, you know, fuel injected.
The everything was was becoming a bit more digital, but also still relatively easy to work around and reliable.
So where are you going for the 1990s?
David Prince One car I've got on my list.
Again, you could have a dozen and it's not a Honda.
I was waiting for the NSX. David Prince.
Damn, I didn't even think of that.
I might scrub this one. Actually, the first thing that
came to mind. Mazda MX5NA.
OK, Yep, that's fair. Yeah, I think that's that was
released at the Chicago Motors show, I think in in 8089, went on sale in 1990. And I think what I love about
the NA MX5 is that it was such a simple concept, so beautifully executed and just bought so much, so much fun back to driving and just, you know, really showed a really playful sort of side of Japanese manufacturing, I think.
And of course, they're going on to be the the best selling sports car of all time. So, so the Mazda Elan, I mean,
MX5 was, which was based on still still today is arguably, would you say it's a a classless car?
Because there's a guy up the road for me that's got one and he drives a brand new like, you know, X5, Yeah.
And like quite wealthy. But in his garage next to it,
there's an MX5. Yeah.
And it just shows that like, you know, it's a cheap little sports car, even though he's got a $250,000 bloody, whatever it is.
He drives some massive, I think, I think it's an X7 actually.
It's, it's a hideous thing. But anyway, yeah, yeah.
But that's, you know, it, it's still, he has an MX5.
So you know that for me shows it's kind of a bit of a bit of a classless car, if you, if you ask me.
No, I, I totally agree. I think, I think when you said
sports car was of course, it is a sports car, but the fact that it was only one point six, yeah, 1600 Cam engine and a lot of people said it doesn't go very fast, but it's one of those cars that's the sum of all its parts. And it's such a fun car to
drive, so engaging, which is lacking from so many new cars, sadly, that that it's just yeah, it's to the test of time.
And and I think I agree, I think classless is a good word for it.
And I think a lot of people have who have expensive cars have one in their collection. Yep, I agree with you. 1212,
yeah. Jim, there are obviously a few
Hondas that get special mentioned with this decade, but I won't. I decided that because I've
stepped out of my Daimler, you know, with no money left except because. You couldn't afford to fix it.
Exactly. It's on the side of the road
with a big pool of oil. Underneath it, yeah.
Exactly, except I have sold the house and I've decided I'm going to have one last hurrah before I go broke completely, which isn't going to be a little bit experimental for the time, and buy an LS400. Oh, good car, good choice.
Yeah, that's a good one. Thinking Man's name was 66.
Yes. Accountant.
Yeah, that's yeah, great. That's great car.
That is an LS400. I think we can all agree on this
on this on this is one of it's an icon.
Really it is. Now.
It's when that when that car came out, it it took it, it changed the game. You know, all the all the high
end companies were like, oh, OK, how are the Japanese doing this sort of quality for way less than us?
And, you know, considered now like they were cheap for so long and and they're finally getting a bit of recognition as as what they deserve. But that engine is a
masterpiece. The the everything works on
them. They're just reliable.
They're you know, they're a good thing.
I think that's AI think that's a cracking choice.
Excellent choice, Jim. Thanks, Rob.
Well, I'm just going to go totally opposite.
I was going to stick with the six cylinder theme with an E36M3, but I won't go there because Dave went with the E30, so I'm going to go with the WRX. Good choice.
Yeah, I like that one. Yeah, an STI.
How's that 2 door if we can get one?
Yeah, yeah. Yep, Yep.
That that's a. That's a great choice.
So WXS came out in 9092. 2 Was it that early?
Was it? Yeah, it might have been, it
might not or 92 or 94. I can't remember the, the, the
exact, the, the exact year, but they were early 90s that they came out and they obviously made super famous by, you know, some famous rally drivers calling McRae and colour signs because like they were, they were battling in the, in those, you know, in, in the era, you know, iconic sound, iconic livery blue with the, you know, the 555, you know, gold wheels world, really blue, just iconic, iconic, iconic car.
That is, that's a great choice that that should have been on my list actually. But that's that's, that's a
great one, Rob, I think you've nailed that that choice.
And, and I've got this liking to it because Harley and I went to a murder show that particular later on.
Sally's only a few years old, but it was one of the later models. And we had the the the World
Rally Champion there signing the WRX posters.
That's cool. Yeah.
So it's real good. I still got the poster.
That, that's an awesome choice, Rob.
I like that one, Scotty. Well, I had the WRX, that's one
of mine. Oh, OK.
That's it. That's one, that's it.
Let's go. It's all done.
Finished the show. It was so hard to pick because
there's so many I like in the 90s.
You can still pick the 32. GDR you can pick 33.
GDR you. Can pick 34 GDR so you can pick
them all. Then I was thinking oh evos as
well I don't think. But really they really stood out
as much as something for the 90s as a good pick as like the WRX did feel like the WRX is the pick because it was fast and something that you could afford. You know, it didn't have to be
the 2 door 1. The 2 door 1 was obviously more
expensive which is the 4 door STI and that just a normal Derby RX was still was still quick for its time and handled fantastically. The looks is just what made it a
rally car. You know, compared to the looks
of them, of them now, it was just a rally car for the street.
Yeah. And the thiefs love them too.
They did. The ram Raiders love them, Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. That was popular for that lot
were getting stolen all the time.
I'm trying to think. I don't think I really had
anything else. I'm not going to go the GDRS
because it's too easy. No Cairns Scotty, this is your
choice. This is months ago, something a
bit different and jazz it up a bit.
That's why I was kind of thinking WRX because it's more for kind of everywhere. Like obviously the 32 GDRS
iconic, yeah, You know, it's won tonnes of races.
It's a very successful race. World.
Yep, 4 wheel drive system was just magical for the time to come out. Such high tech technology put
into it. They also called people a pug of
assholes. Yep, Yep, exactly.
They've shot up in price now, kind of tape it down a bit, which is, which is OK, you know, but it's what they used to be.
Yeah, I'm going to go. I'm going to stick with Rob, I
think. OK, 2 double it.
Was in my head and it was what I was going to say.
So I'll, I'll stay with that. That's a good choice.
I like that car on my on my list was the 33 GDR.
Actually, I I had it that, but it it was between that and you said my LS400. So I so now I'm going to have to
go to my my backup backup plan, which is the BMW 8 series.
I think it's such an iconically, it's just as a kid when I saw that for the first time and I got 1 as a, as a Hot Wheels car, so as a matchbox car with the doors that opened and it was black with fluoro yellow interior and a plastic interior and fluoro yellow 850 on the side.
Like, you know, in like a real 90s font.
So it's an individual. It was an individual.
Yeah. Ed Bunting sold it.
So OK, I wouldn't own one because they'd they'd terrify me to own, but they had every conceivable gizmo in it.
They were. I think they're a beautiful
looking car. I think they're a really cool
looking car. I think that silhouette is just
so iconic that you know, the long, long hood, little little mini pop ups, you know, V12 or V8 options.
I'd probably go for AV81 if I was to get one realistically, because the V121 would leave me like gym on the side of the road with his 66. You could keep each of the
company. We could, we could, we could
just say, oh, he's got, he's got nice and leather seats.
You know, we could battle it out.
But in terms of like what it what it represented, it was, it was after 80s excess, but it was also 90s kind of class.
Like it was kind of a car. He said that that's a statement
car like that. That was, it wasn't a cheap car.
It was a bit of a statement. Now, if anybody knows me that
they know I'm not like the BM WS biggest fan, but I've always liked those and and I think that represents the 90s so well.
It's kind of it's kind of the last try because it it's it's kind of like an 80s mixed with 90s retro vibe kind of style aesthetic. Really like those.
I think. I think they're a really, really
cool car. So, yeah, I would definitely say
that'd be, if it wasn't for the 33 GDR or, or the LS400, Damn you, Rob. Sorry, Jim.
It would be, yeah, the 8:50 for me or the 8 series because it was just, it was an iconically designed car.
That or an actually, I, I didn't mind an E39, you know, 5 Series eight. I thought that was a very
handsome sedan if I was trying to keep with the, with the, with the sedan theme of a 124, etcetera.
So yeah, one of those, but I I think I'd go, I think I'm going to go the eight series. Love the choices, gentlemen.
We we all kind of pretty much had similar but different, if that makes sense. He was kind of, you know, we've
all chosen cars to be like, oh, I didn't think about that.
That that's a yeah, that's a cool choice.
David Prince, put all your Honda stuff in a box and never look at it. Luckily the NSX was just rubbish
anyway. It was a terrible car, no?
One liked it. Overpriced.
Yeah, it wasn't driven by someone famous or race or anything. No, not.
At. All no, no, it's just you know,
and and it wasn't even that good because like it shared its wheels car of the year with a with a bloody Nissan Pulsar.
Like yeah, yeah, like this. How how good could this car be?
To be fair, I actually forgot about the NSX as well.
I, I should have chose that as my, as my pig, But no, that's, I think you've, I think you've, I think you've made a better good choice too, though, gentlemen, I think, I think you guys have nailed your choices. We will continue this because
like we're, we're going to run out of time.
We're going to get to the car quiz before, before the the show goes over time. But I really like this idea.
I think of the, you know, our, our favourites from that era.
I think, you know, now that we've chosen our our favourites, we should do ones, but like, you know what we could do, you know, like a close second or third. But I think the, I think the
choices you guys made were, were great.
And I think you all had valid points.
You know, like Rob's charge, a valid point, like absolute valid point. You know, the Scotty's, you
know, GTHR, it's an icon. It's the it's got pedigree, you
know, you know, the 123 gym, like what a car, you know, you know, I mean like that, that that really set Mercedes to where they are today. If it wasn't for the 123, I
don't think they would have, they would have done that.
You know, E 30s David, like, you know, that's that's EE 30 BMW, say BMW. You know, these these are cars
that have been important and have had a reason to to exist.
You know, the RX7 for me, out of my whole list, I think is probably the weirdest car, but it's also probably the most, you know, one of the most important cars because because it kept, you know, it, it started a legacy of the of the the wank.
Well, didn't start, but it kept the wankle Rotary engine kind of going. So yeah.
And then we get to like the 90s with the LS4 hundreds and MX Fives and, you know, Rexes and stuff where, you know, these are, these are important cars. And I wanted to to reiterate
this point because important cars, you know, hold a special place in in, in people's minds and hearts.
Like if people would ask me, oh, what are some important cars today? I don't think I could think of
that many, you know what I mean, in terms of like icons, like the ones we've just mentioned. You know, those cars are those
cars are icons for a reason. The, the newer cars.
I just don't, I don't know if I'm going to get that same kind of kind of vibe, you know, that that, you know, we're going to look back following in about in 10 years.
So Oh yeah, man, that Cherry Teego 7 pot, you know what a car. But yeah, you never know.
We, we might because we, because that's probably all that's going to be on. Offer in the, you know, in the
lately, not lately, I guess you know, twenty 10's and stuff as well weren't really limited editions, so just little add ONS or you know, different coloured rims or something like that.
It wasn't a proper upgrade over the original.
Yeah, I'd agree with you on. That make it stand out and to
hold a price that would move on in the future to be a collectible. I agree with that.
I think next week we'll finish this one by by doing the the 2000s and the 20 tens. Yeah, I think, I think and and
that'll that'll be a nice kind of paradigm shift to what we to what we've had, because this was it's a good topic because like, again, there's something there's so many cars and like even you, you're saying it's going in the 90s, like how can you choose?
There's just so many main seats. Yeah. 20 tens is going to take a
bit. Yeah, 20 tens for me is going to
going to be a bit going to be a bit hard too, but but I think I've got one as well. And you know, that car for me
was it's a, it's a special car. But I'll, I'll explain that in
I'll explain that next, next week.
When we do this in 20-30, I'm going to struggle with twenty 20s. I don't think so.
I mean, I'll probably say the only car that's, you know, I mean, look, there's Porsches and stuff, but like they're always iconic. But like, you know, yeah, it's
there's, there's not, there's not much for us anymore in terms. Of like Lambos R eights, there's
all sorts of stuff. Yeah, in the in the 2000 in the
in the 20 tens. But like now it's just like
anything this I don't want a bloody Urus like you're like who wants he wants a mimic in a year.
It's like it's like infection. It's it's like a urinary tract
infection. So.
I I, I guess when we did the 90's, the 80s and everything, I purposely didn't put down, you know, a Ferrari F40 and things like that. Because it's obvious.
Obvious. Yeah, you know, of course you go
that all the, you know, the 9:00. 592.
The Porsche turbos and things from the from the 80s and stuff of course. You think those?
They were just, they were fantastic.
Yeah, brilliant. But like, again, these are cars
like that are, you know, like you look at like a Rimac or, or sorry, not a Rimac, A coatings egg and, and stuff like that.
Like these are incredible feats of engineering, right?
They're incredible cars, but they don't relate to, to, to the masses. And like, unlike an MX5, you
know, and the, and the, the person that runs, I think that that runs Rimac or, or one of those electric car companies, he drives an E39-M5 every day. That's how Yeah.
And he's got all these, these hyper, hyper cars and he's the, he's the CEO of the company and he drives any 39 and five video because it gives him the best steering feel out of any of anything. And he's driven out you.
Know like burning oil every day and topping it up. 100%,
absolutely, absolutely Scotty yes, so, but but that just shows like how iconic these cars are. Like, you know, you, you don't
you don't get that with a with a bloody you know, cherry Teego 7 or or Havel H6. You know, it's you.
You used to aspire to something like like even your basic cars, you know, like they they were good.
And, and, you know, for me, the ones from, you know, the, the, the 20 tens, like, like there's one in particular for me that's that I'll say next week and I may or may not own this car, but the, IT, you know, it brought fun back for not much money.
And it was, and now it's a bit of an icon.
And it's, it's very they're and they're, they're kind of getting sought after because of because of that reason.
So these are, these are the things that that, you know, as car people, we need to understand.
So, yeah, it would be interesting to sit back in 20-30 and and say, hang on, guys, let's revisit this five years, like from five years ago and say, oh, I don't know, I don't know where we're going. But I want to say, gentlemen,
great choices on the cars, though, like that.
You did some, you did some phenomenal work.
So we'll continue this next week.
There's some homework for you, gentlemen.
Moving on. It's done.
That's a good thing. We've already done it up to 10.
Moving on to tonight's car quiz, gentlemen.
So you know, it's the car to car quiz, 10 questions plus some bonus questions. You know the rules.
Jump in with your name. Question #1 Gentlemen, Hyundai's
managing director has this week come out and said what?
Jim. Jim.
Is it that they is it that they would regret?
So that's regret, something about turbo engines.
Incorrect, Jim. Not the answer I'm quite looking
for, but good guess. He said something that's that's
kind of taken. It's it's been all over the
news. People are like, well, hang on a
minute. He's he's saying that really,
even though that they they continue with them that that's that's something that that's a hit.
Rob got in there. I.
Was going to say they regret making some crappy motors that will blow on up I. Think they do, but that's that's
that's not the answer I'm looking for.
David Brits. They regret making focusing on
electric cars. Incorrect.
Do they regret regretting the end division?
No, it's got part to do with the end division.
It's, they've come in and said that nobody wants manual gearboxes anymore, so they don't really want to do them anymore.
So I mean that's. Fair.
I mean, if no one's buying them, what's the point?
Yep, that's fair. Like I think they're going to go
after this range of, of N series cars that are, you know, petrol powered because the DCTS sell them, you know, eight to two or something like, you know, 80% more.
They're like, well, what, why do we help?
What do we bother with a car that's slower?
That's, you know, not getting sold as much that has to be special ordered, you know, what's the point?
And I kind of get it, you know, it's sad, but I kind of get it.
Like, like if you look at Audi and B and Mercedes that they don't offer, you know, any manuals in their, in their sports ones, BMW do. But even then they're a very
small chunk of, of sales. So yeah, it's it's a sign of the
times. At least we're getting some cool
performance cars in the end. Correct yes yeah and like I
don't really like BM WS new shooting styling direction, but at least take offering a manual. So that's that's something.
Question #2 Australia's only McLaren F1 is for sale.
How much are they asking for it? I'll give closest to.
So this but I I just never click on articles.
David, David, I'll go 12.5 million, 12.5 mil.
Well, I'll give you guys, it's in the millions.
OK. So, so David, you're on the
right. Side I thought as much.
What's, what are they after? He wants to go next.
Rob, we'll go. We'll go with you.
Rob. All right, I'll go 11,000,000.
11 mil, says Rob Jim. I'll say 8.7. 8.7 and Scotty
Doe. I I'm going to say 15,000,000.
Well, Scotty, you're closest to. They are.
They are asking $37 million for this car.
Outrageous, as you would say, David Prince.
Outrageous. Imagine taking for roadworthy.
Imagine a stamp duty on that if you could get it registered.
Lucky you can't get it registered.
Oh, I kind of want to go on the on the Vicroads site and see what the stamp duty, you know, the calculator would have been.
That'd be nuts. $40.00 for every $40.00 for every 1000 isn't.
It yeah. So it's, it's, oh Jesus Christ,
that that'd be, do you think they've got a cap like they'd have, they'd have to have a cap. Sure, you would think.
That's where I just write down my own club figures.
It'll go it'll be unregistered and go on club plates.
No, it it, dude, You you couldn't afford to register it.
You'd be you'd be drawing it on a trade plate.
Yeah. Scotty, What were you going to
say? I'd.
Say no, I can't remember. When When you go, We'll come
back if I. Remember, if I remember.
Question #3 Ford is looking at reintroducing what vehicles to enter what market. Jim.
Jim. Is it the Fiesta in focus to
enter Europe? Correct.
I'll pay you that, Jim. They're, they're looking after
the disaster that is just getting rid of them.
They've got 0 passenger vehicles that aren't SUVs or well, they actually have 0 passenger vehicles now that's not a Mustang. So they're like, we probably
made a mistake by getting rid of the Fiesta and the Focus.
So they're looking at bringing them back.
Yeah, Fiery you, you know that meme of like that guy that throws him out? The guy throw gets thrown at the
window. But yeah, yeah, yeah, it's it's
why don't we bring the Fiesta back?
Why don't we get? Why don't we get rid of it in
the first? Place something unique, A4 door
Mustang and call it the Falcon. Yeah.
Wow, Rob. We're throwing you out of the
window, Rob. We should put like AI don't know
A4 litre straight 6IN it or something.
Call it a barrel. Call it a barrel.
I think we've still got some of those lying around.
Just before you move on, I looked up the stamp duty fee for that McLaren. It would be $3.33 million.
Oh. My God.
Nothing compared to how much you spent on the car.
Yeah, chump change, chump change.
Yeah, chump change. I'll get my, I'll get my cheque
book out. I'll be in generational doubt
for the next 400 generations. But it's OK.
It's. OK.
Vicroads would be loving it. They'll be like, yeah.
So why would you have to pay stamp duty when you're paying tax on the car when you purchase a car?
What's the goal with that? What's that for?
Why are you paying tax on it? Like when you buy one, don't
you? Like you?
You pay GST, don't you? That that's, that's part of it,
isn't it? That's part of the the stamps.
No, no, that's it. Depends, is it private sale or
through the dealer? Through a dealer.
But normally if you buy a new car, you pay 10% GST.
But that's why you people lease cars, because you get 10% off the Yeah, that's. A that makes.
GST component but you still have to pay stamp duty.
Are you paying tax on tax? Yeah, that's a good point
actually. Didn't think about that.
We'll have to ask you. I know when we find out.
Yeah, yeah. That's, we'll get it.
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, that's. Maybe you don't pay stamps on a
brand new car. Yeah, you only pay.
You only pay the GST on a new car, no?
I'm pretty sure you still pay stamp duty.
You don't, but it's not a new, it's not a new car.
That's the thing. It's not as a second hand car.
There's no luxury car tax. If it if it's not registered
then and you put it on club plates then you don't pay stamp duty. Yeah, true.
So there's I think there's the same new mode there.
I think we should advise them if they're listening Car Talk top tier, don't don't re register it.
Just put it on club plates and we'll have the 3.3 mil.
Absolutely you can you can look after us.
You know, project, you know, they've got you know, they've got project compassion like like it's project Car Talk.
This is help us out guys. Question #4 the Magna TSV 6 SI
was only available in how many colours?
Jim. Jim. 1.
Incorrect, Rob. Rob Three.
That is correct, Rob. They're only relevant 3 colours.
Bottom bonus question. What were the colours?
David? David, I'll give you a point for
each Sarajevo white that is 1. What's that?
What's that Goldie one called? Is it pewter Incorrect.
So you've had a you've had a buzzy out for that one.
You get your you can come back in once everyone has a go.
Who who wants the buzzy next? So sorry ever What his name.
So so you're on one there, David, who'd like to have a have a punt. Oh.
No, I've got a neighbour with one, but I don't know what the colour's called, but I don't know it looks like.
Well, I'll tell you what, if you don't, if you can just give me the colours, don't you? Don't have to give me the names.
Yeah, just just give me the give me the colours.
I'll pay them as well, Rob. Burnt orange.
Incorrect. Jim.
Jim. Silver.
Silver's correct. That's one.
So it's Mirage Silver. And so you've still got one more
choice before Scotty can can have a go, Jim.
And I'll say red. Red is correct.
Calypso red. There were three colours it was
offered in and they funny fun fact they had a bit of differences. So like they would make more
power on 98. It was, it was said another
thing that they made like another 10 kilowatts on 98 or something. So if you run them on premium
fuel, you got more powers. And random fact 2, my acidic
brand new costs more than one of those.
Well, that's that's wild. Yes, really.
According to Redbook, yeah. That's wild question #5 here's
here's off you rob the Ford Mustang GTD.
Yep, it's just been released to the public.
The first deliveries have just taken place.
It claims an incredible nurburgering time on the full lap. So so it's one of only a few
cars that have time being toned on the full lap.
I'll give closest to of what time was it?
I'm just guessing 7 minutes and 36 seconds.
Rob 7 minutes and 36 seconds is Rob, so I'm going to write 7 minutes 36. Yep.
I'll go seven O 2. Scotty 702 so Jim and David are
yet to play, I'll GO-755755 says.
I'll go 653. 653, says Jim. Jim, you were closest to it, did
it in. This is the full lap we're
talking about, right? So 652, you were one second off,
Jim. Well, to.
Be fair, I I was helped because I remember that Sabine was trying to beat 8 minutes in a transit, so it's really a bit faster than that it. Had to be, it had to be less
than that. Yeah.
So it's in it's in very elite company.
It's in the top top 10 for the all time record, but it's also in the top three for the full lap record.
So it's it's an unheard of time. That's ridiculous.
That is a ridiculous time question number six, according to Double AMI or Amy. So a good friend Amy, one in
five Aussie motorists are doing what?
When they draw, when they turn on their cars.
Jim. Jim.
Turning off the safety system Swans like him.
Well done, Jim. That is absolutely you're you're
on fire, Jim. I.
Haven't loved yet? He's Jim Stewart of of of of
Muslim. Nothing is done of of that's a
really interesting stat, isn't it?
Gosh, crazy start. So they're they're turning off
their, their driver safety systems and all that stuff.
So one in five that's, that's that apparently they're, they've cited for, you know, too many bongs and things going on and, and dragging the, the steering wheel across the road and make them feel uncomfortable. They're the things that make
them five star safety. Correct.
I'd be really interested. You said double AMI, didn't you?
Correct, yes. So I'd be really interested to
see like if there's a pattern in what cars those people are driving like which because some cars, like certainly a lot of Chinese cars have been really criticised for that.
But even a guy on the radio today was talking on old people's radio. I don't know if you listen to
old people's radio, Rob, but he's just bought a manual Mustang. And when he goes to change
gears, it brings up a warning saying keep both hands on the steering wheel. Jeez.
Oh my God, how do you do that? Well, exactly right.
That's what he said, he said. I've emailed four and they
can't. There's no way they could.
That's part of the thing like so you go to change, take your hand off the steam wheel to change the manual gear shift and it says again, but. If you drive a manual, I know I
used to keep my hand on the gear stick all the time so you know you. Get it on all the time.
You'd have this on all the time. Keep both hands.
Wouldn't that be fun to draw? Oh no.
What's the what's the Ford one? Doo Doo Doo.
Or, you know, that's the idea. I've got, I've got a TAFE
colleague who's got last of the Picanto GTS, the manual ones.
And then her husband's got a brand new one.
And she as soon as she turns the new one off, she turns everything off. She can't deal with it because
it's. So different.
Wow, wow, I mean, that's that says a lot, doesn't it?
Like, you know, that's all you're gonna need really.
Like I don't the Fiesta sometimes if I'm driving and it's actually it's pretty tame from you know, from from my experience, but it's if I'm, you know, if I'm overtaking a car, not everything in a car. I should say, if I'm like in a
really narrow, you know, suburban St and you know, I see a car coming in and I go to pull over to the side behind a car to let another car come past and I haven't hit the brake yet.
It'll be but me saying you stop the car, you're you're gonna go into. So that's probably the only
thing that it that it does that that it's, you know, does for me like it, it drags me back over into the into the lane sometimes, but only, but only does it over 70 KS in the hour, which I don't mind that, that that's OK.
But the but some of the cars are like I, you know, was, was chatting with with my, my housemate George and he's got a Havel H6GT and he turns everything off himself.
He because he's like, he's just so over assisted.
It bings and bongs at you for every two seconds.
He's like, he's like, he's like, I turn it off.
The good thing about on on those, I think he's like, you turn it off and it's off the next time we next time we drive the car, which is, which is kind of cool.
So, but even the lady we bought it from said the same thing.
She's she's like, yeah, I had a friend for a day and I just drove me mad. So I turned it all off.
So, so it's barely had it on it's whole entire its entire life. I've been on the road but it's
lovely. Instead of my wife nagging at
me, the car can nag. I I wish the bings and bongs
were a bit louder, like more high pitched because then I'm not going to be able to hear them.
I'm pretty deaf. I.
Love that. That's one of the, it's one of
the great ones. All right.
Next question, question #7 what does the RC in Lexus RC stand for? Good question.
What does the RC in Lexus RC stand for, David?
I'll have a guess, David. Race coupe.
I'll give you .5 because the second word's coupe.
Do I give you .5? Thank you.
I'll take .5 at this point. Competition, Scott.
Scott. I'm going to say rally.
No, incorrect. So Jim and Rob yet to yet to
have a have a go. Let's see.
I think of what else would it be?
I'll guess. I'm sure this is wrong.
I've got quite a soft spot for these.
I'm going to say You're going to guess stands for Radical.
Radical is correct. Jim, there's no way.
Radical coupe or coupe? Were you going to say that as
well, Rob? Yeah.
Wondering. Probably should have stepped in
you. Should have jumped in first.
That is good. It stands for Radical Coupe.
Yeah. Well done.
That's horrible. It's shocking.
It's. Terrible question #8 is a is a
brochure question. Yeah.
Genetically modified. You might have to change your
genes. Oh, if you sorry if blank blank
blank. That's the usual reaction after
driving the latest Blank Blank FAST instead of FUCK, as you could imagine. You see, the stunning new
limited edition tends to leave you a little speechless.
Now the family pedigree that produced the car of the decade has evolved to a fourth generation of the Blank, which carries with some amazing modifications still with the 160 kilowatt sting of Blanks rally bred Boxer engine gym.
No, sorry. I'll drop out.
The blank blank blank comes stacked with excessive value above the deep growl of the turbocharger.
There's now ACD player and front door handle mounted tweeter speakers. The Rally's David is it Subaru
Liberty Rs Incorrect. The rally style interior
features body hugging bucket seats in black with yellow trim that should you know, kind of give it away a little bit.
A Momo airbag, steering wheel and STI type metal finished instruments. That's that's a big hint.
Smack in the centre console is an individual number that says that this is a very rare collector's car.
Limited edition badges side and back confirm it.
Truck side matte black, 5 spoke alloy mags.
A set of radicals, Scott. Is this the WRXSTI?
The Evo 5 edition. Yeah, I'll pay that.
Yeah, Yeah, that is correct. The Subaru WRX ivs 5 isn't it
yes yeah in in Roman numerals yeah it's that's 444 sorry 4 that's alright I'll give it to you it's sorry it's they all come in club spec yellow so they're.
All yellow and they've got the black rims.
Yeah, that's the one at 42. I remember at 260, yeah.
They were a nice car, so I'll give that to you.
Scotty. Well done.
Thank you. You got the chocolates there.
Nice question #9 how many cars are in use worldwide?
I'll give closest to OH. God.
In use not they count the ones in our in our yards that aren't being used correct David Prince OK OK that that should be bloody half of them anyway of of the so being driven at any given time on the road they're in use yeah that are being used actively used yes this was a this was quite an interesting question that's why I was like oh that that's kind of a.
I look, I'll just throw it out there.
I'll start at a billion. I'll give it to you, Rob.
That's the answer. They said about a billion or
just over a billion each at any given time are being used.
There you go, Rob. I didn't have to go to a closest
to you. You nailed it on the first hit.
Wow. Well.
I think, I think that balances out because Rob missed my question before and I missed his.
Question #10 How many speeds in the automatic gearbox did the Lexus ISF have? Rob Scott got in there first.
What I get in for 8? 8 is absolutely correct, Scotty
Walter. You know, it was canned for
having eight gears back in, back in the day it was, it was like, why does it need so many, so many gears?
And now it's just like, it was like, oh, you got 6 gears.
You need more than that, mate. You need you need 10.
So that's your quiz gentlemen. For today, score check David
1.5, Rob 2, Scotty 3 and tonight's winner on a grand
total of 12345 and 1/2 is. For the matter, he's won it.
It's it's good work. Thank you.
You, that middle section, you were on fire.
Like you just, you just Bang, Bang.
Bang. Yeah, No, I really, well,
obviously really enjoyed that. But no, it was kind of broad
quiz. Like you'll exercise F gearbox
like it is. Yeah.
Bang, bang, 100%. Now, Jim, could I ask you this
this question? Actually, Scott, you can do the
honours. Who would you like to thank,
Jim? I'd like to thank the the rest
of you for making my winning job so much easier.
Rabbity too, right? Yeah, Rabbity.
Just a just a bit of shame, Just a little bit of shame I like.
That, that, that's. A That's a Scotty that's a
Scotty S response. I think Scotty would have.
Scotty would have. Proved her respect, yeah.
Oh, lovely work. Love your work, gentlemen.
As always. I think that's a podcast, gents.
Let's do some plugs. Rob's firefighting fabrication,
The whole lot he's Rob's overachieving, Rob's overachieving, Rob's counsel punching on with Rob's doing it as well as we know. So hit that point.
Rob, if you if you want anything, he's got fingers and.
Medications. What?
Yes, politics. We were voting for him last
week. Yeah, last week.
Don't know whatever, but yeah. Jim And don't forget to Rob,
when you get to be a senator, you've got to drive an HSC senator as well. You do.
Yes, everything's a BMW now, isn't it?
Jim, would you, after last week's antics, would you vote for Rob? Oh well, you know, it's a lot
better than most people. That get in their shop.
I wouldn't want to be voting for millennial origins that either so. That's that's fair.
That is fair. I'm I'm with you on that.
Yeah, I'm, I'm voting 1 Rob. Next election that's I'll make a
box on the side of the ledge. Pool 1 Rob.
Car Talk party. Car Talk party.
Yeah. David Prince.
Anything you'd like to plug today?
Anything I'd like to. It was it was.
Don't worry. Be happy.
Last week. I think it was.
It's something something make good choices.
Make good choice. Yeah.
So can we call this section David's Wisdom?
Yeah. That would suggest that I have
some. Now.
You've got plenty, David, believe me.
David Son from Japan. I've got a good one from Japan.
Life shouldn't be measured in the number of MO, the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away. Oh, that's a good one.
I like that. Yeah.
Nice. Thank you very much.
So. So, so.
So that's going to be a thing now.
Rob's Rob. Sorry.
Rob's. Rob's doing it.
And Rob's politics and David's. David's wisdom.
That's brought to you by NEW Life Fridge Magnets.
Like to put that on Shopify. Definitely.
Do you have anything you want to plug?
Yeah, just, you know, servicing your cars properly.
I'm a bit sick of relatives going.
I don't know what to do. My cars are out of oil and I'm
like, just service it. Ever.
Yeah, so Jim's advice, it just sounds like I was just telling that just sounds like I'm saying Jim's mowing or Jim's, you know, Jim's advice is, is service, service your car and we get to the the piece de resistance of the evening.
Scotty's golf tip of the week. Scotty, what is your tip of the
week this week? For the week, there's a car
watch on TikTok and he's got like this massive scruffy beard and that and when he does golf tips, he's just like he screams them. It's hilarious.
His one is like absolutely simplifying it.
So all you're doing is pretty much throwing the club down at the ground. That's all you're doing.
So picture you've got like a massive boulder or something down on the ground and you've just got a stick and you're just swinging down. You're just trying to whack it.
So you just do that movement of just you trying to aim down and just hit that as hard as you can, which ends up being like a throwing motion. All right.
So don't get so caught up on the swing itself, because everyone's swing is different. Just think of it from a physics
standpoint that that's what you're trying to do.
I like that, Scotty. I like that a lot.
Did you watch Happy Gilmore 2? Yes, I did.
Yeah. So many cameos and that it.
Was. It was.
Yeah, I I enjoyed it. It was, it was enjoyable.
Yeah, I agree. It was, it was enjoyable.
It was not as good as the original, but.
No. I mean, I knew it wasn't going
to be. You can't beat the original.
No, but it had some funny moments.
It did. I just like where he kept hiding
his alcohol. It was brilliant.
The the best one was the TV remote.
That was that's, that's, that's brilliant.
That was good. But no would recommend if you
just want a brainless fun watch that give that a go.
