We hope you've seen it. Maybe the weirdest comparison we'll do this year. It's up on the original YouTube channel because we had the Hyundai i5 in, right?
And we've seen a lot of other people's reviews on it. The common thread we saw is that there was really nothing to put it with. And so we started down the road. This happened months ago. We started on the road to, all right, what are the stats of that car? There's nothing in the EV world to put it with. Not really. I mean, there's other things that would have similar stats, but it was just like, but because it's trying to be fun. Exactly. So we started looking at what are the stats? What are the things that align with those stats? And we had lots of crazy comparisons. And we wound up with our dear friend Derek actually had his loosen. We were like, those stats are really close.
It's for seat and it's kind of the same shape. So then we wound up ridiculous. Hyundai i5 and versus the Ferrari GTC 4 Lusso now available on the original channel. And I will admit that the thumbnail is like, what are you doing? I'm fully aware. What are you guys doing? But I guarantee if you watch that piece, you will get it. That is the beginning of a wash of cool comparisons that we have come in this year. We got so much on the way.
Have we calculated the magic number for the i5 end? Did we do that yet? We haven't. I hear you guys are pretty excited about that magic number coming from the last podcast.
People are saying they're stopping at the stoplight and putting the calculation in their phone while they're at the red light just to make sure their cars under the 12 magic number.
Look, even if it's not under that is okay, chance actually pointed out to us the new Hummer EV has a score of nine.
It's terrifying. So it's well under the 12 magic number. That's terrifying. But that doesn't mean it's fun. See, that is the trick.
The trick flip side is that you can actually have a fun car that's outside the magic number or a non-fun car inside the magic number.
I'm just saying it doesn't matter. Are you calculating right now? I am calculating right now my friend to see what is the weight of the i5 end is 58.64 is the
stat I have in front of me. I'm dividing that by I'm going to say 600 because I know you can go in mode and go more but let's go standard mode. Just drive it around.
66610 somewhere there. 9.7. It's doing fine. It's doing fine. There we go.
It's just fine. Down into sickle digits. That's when stuff really gets to be fast. Anyway, look, it's not a hard and fast real
I understand you may have some car that you are desperately in love with that runs a 15.
Exactly. And those who are not following along the last podcast we were discussing about the direct comparison here of what is the
weight of the vehicle divided by the horsepower you find out how many pounds each horsepower is lugging around and my comment comment was that stuff in the 12s were
below and I'm talking 12 pounds per horsepower. Yes, that stuff's fun. So apparently a Hummer EV everyone surprising everyone with a 9.0
Well, speaking of EVs, we have spotted the spy photos as I'm sure all of you have of the Porsche 718 Cayman EV Cayman and Boxer EV and I have thoughts I would love to hear your thoughts because I've looked at this and I have
a couple but I'm very curious you the long time Cayman owner where you land on this right now. I don't think it looks like a Cayman.
Okay, mainly because the proportions have been destroyed and I'm talking about the wheelbase. If you look at the wheelbase, this is not the 97.4 magic
number of Caymans or 97.2 97.4. The super is one and the Cayman, but essentially anyway, moving on. Yes, that magic wheelbase number is what the Cayman is that has been since the inception of the Cayman back in 2006.
Same with the Boxer, it appears too long. It's become a GT car. It's now between a 911 and a Cayman weirdly. That tells me they're using some other
platform plopping a new body on some kind of platform when here they've promised us the battery stack would look different and it would be created in such a way as to mimic the weight transfer of the engine.
The whole point of mid-engine cars because of how great it drives that neutrality and that control and then the rear engine, you have the weight behind the rear axle or the front engine, whatever that is, they have said the weight of the
battery will be in a different location. This tells me they're using like a Tows chassis or something like that. Well, it looks something it isn't. I think it's the McCann. It looks big to me. It looks too big. The problem with it is it looks. There's not a lot. There's spy photos and I understand those change and I struggle to actually speak on spy photos in the same way I do about a concept car because we just haven't seen the reality yet. However, the spy photos, there's not a lot of references to scale, but it looks big. It looks like big and big.
big and big. It looks like 9.11 big. It looks related to the Tycon. Yes, it looks like a shortened
tour Tycon. And it makes me wonder if it's sharing some Macon EV architecture. Yeah, it could be
something like that. So right now, I'm not too thrilled to see that because Cayman Boxster
indicates smaller platform, Nimbler, and the whole point was the balance of handling. That true
mid-engine accessible car. I'm not seeing. I'm seeing that sloped fast-back shape for the rear hatch
but it's not too much different than what is currently going on with the 9.11 and just using
Tycon new headlights which we will probably see in the next iteration of the 9.11 means it's going
to look too close to a 9.11 in proportion and in styling. And that was what set the Cayman apart.
So, Porsche, we've got some work to do here. We're very curious to see how this actually shakes
out because obviously we're looking at it, you know, covered up spy stuff, all of that stuff
changes but I'm very, very curious about this. And I also want to say this, I want it to be great.
I do too. Yes. Whether it's an EV or an internal combustion engine because I know that's the
thing that Porsche is talking about now is they're going to try to figure out if they can take
because of lack of interest in EVs overall. Can they take their cars that were designed to be EVs
and put internal combustion engines in them in some sort of hybrid form? That's being discussed.
Okay, I know that's been said publicly. But I don't care. I don't care what the powertrain is.
I don't care if it's EV, I don't care if it's gasoline, I don't care if it's hybrid,
it needs to be light focused and fun. And that's not what this came in appears to be. And that's
what makes me concerned. I want it to be great. I want it to light us up like the Hyundai i5N.
That's good. I want it to give us the same kind of wow. I wasn't expecting a whole lot but this
is amazing kind of driving feeling. The problem with the Porsche is it has that expectation already
riding on it. Yeah, it does. The expectation is already there like, well, this is just going to be
good. How good we'll see. But it's just going to automatically fall into good. I hope the EV
problem is now plaguing all manufacturers. How to make a good business that it's cost effective
to use what they have, platform standpoint, the motors they have, and package it in such a way so
it can be built for profit. But in Porsche's case, it's got to be, as you said, light enough
to make it a standout and make it differentiate from a 911. It's not concerning. I'm just
noting. You're putting a note out there that you're wondering. I get it. I get it for now.

As soon as my sister and I get home for the holidays, we don't even unpack. We head straight to

I'm just going to drive Bono or Caterham. I know Caterham is technically two seats, but it's
really a one-seater moving on. You need your elbows free. Yeah, you do. Yeah, you do. He says if
two seats, get a boxer, come in. They started 10 grand, go up to 100, get the nice one, you can
four, come back in year two, we can find it further. If you need four seats, get a 9-11, they cost
20 grand to 200 grand, get the one you can afford, and come back in a year or two. Take 9-11 and
call me in the morning. What you're saying here, Tom, because you also let us know that you're in
Los Angeles. You have completely bought the hook line and sinker. Why isn't it a Porsche thinking?
So you and Paul can have a private conversation later, but I might fight back a bit. But anyway,
here we go. He says five or more seats? Are you sure? Five or worse, he's just resulted you asking
again. I'm sorry, how many seats? Are you sure? Please revise your answer. Tom's car history
includes in 2009, when you single he had his first big boy job, he bought a CPO Honda S2000
for 22 grand, which he loved for 10 years and just over 100,000 miles. He's afraid it might
have ruined him for all future cars. His only regret was buying a silver one to save one or
$2,000 when there was a blue one parked right next to it. And those look really great and blue,
I have to say. In 2016, Tom's son was born. He took a better job that came with a
bad 405 commute to LA. Yikes. He wasn't ready to let go of the Honda, so he picked up a
Fiat 500 E. Makes sense. I see it. I saw 500 E throughout your email and I thought,
did you get a Mercedes 500 of Fiat? Nope. Nope. Okay, number one, it's fine. He said let's face it,
not a sports car. It was small, nimble, torquy, and kind of fun. Okay. But it had a back seat,
so he could take his wife and son in places that he couldn't take them in the S2000. Sure, of course.
For a commuting, it had the carpool stickers, Apple CarPlay, the best part, it was a free car.
Because he'd drive it three or four days a week and his wife would drive it the other two,
one or two days a week, and the gas savings from sitting, the S2000 from parking the S2000
and his wife's A3, more than covered the lease insurance and electricity costs of the Fiat.
That is honestly, that is the perfect I bought an EV commuter story. That's what you hope for.
The EV commuter does the slog down the 405 with just enough comforting utility and technology
for you to not have to worry about it, and that allows you to have fun cars and the money's a
wash. I love that. That's perfect. That's perfect. In 2018, his wife traded her A3 in for Estelvio.
Okay. That became the go-to. If all three of them were going somewhere, when it was the A3 versus
500E, it was just at least a little bit closer. But then in 2019, his wife was pregnant with his
daughter. The carpool lane was more crowded, not saving him any time. Cost of electricity had
gone up relative to gas. So Tom added Bluetooth to the Honda S2000.
I love that all the steady between Tom and taking the S2000 is a Bluetooth adapter and a slight
increase in electricity prices. That's all we got. That's the scale. Well, that meant the 500E
was sitting a lot. Sure. Yeah. The lease was up. He was ready to get rid of it. He was also sick
of juggling three cars with two parking spaces and he hated driving the giant bus, also known as
the Stelvio. Since when are Stelvio's buses? Yeah. I agree. This already starts to really show us.
You write your S2000 has ruined you because we have raged many, many times, Tom, against the plague
that is five-seat CUVs. Are you sure you need five seats? Yeah, exactly. Apparently you don't.
But the thing is, run that back through the phone. Your answer needs to change.
The Stelvio is not a bus. I mean, I understand comparatively it's a bus. Yeah. But there are so many
more bus like SUVs out there in the Stelvio. But we are moving on. All right. That meant it was
time to let go of the S2000. So he spent 22 grand on a CPO BMW 228i in a red color. Keep in mind,
he bought the S2000 for 22 grand. Now he's bought a car to replace it for 22 grand. That keeps coming
back. Yeah. It was a manual. So as the family car was great, and his daughter was born, the four of
them would take the 228i everywhere. Love it. The only time he'd ever have to get into the bus
is if they were going camping, or is he returning the recycling, which is kind of the LA equivalent
of going to the dump. That's what that is right there. Yeah. It's his dump car. I got it. Okay.
But if he was alone in the car, he hated it. Anytime he found himself having fun
when the setting was perfect, there was something in the back of his head saying, yeah,
that'd be more fun in the S2000. It had less than, in less than perfect settings, there was
the body roll in the half. It made it feel unstable and unpredictable. This is the BMW we're talking
about. By the way, the 228i felt this way. This is fascinating. He said, if you ever forgot to set
sport mode merging into traffic, it felt downright dangerous. Huh. Okay. So he knew pretty quick
that would go. The car would go away as soon as his daughter's car seat was front facing.
In 2020, his wife's bus went from being a stelvio to a macon. See, I don't think of the macon as a
bus either. It's not a bus. That's Porsche's GTI. That's the closest to the bus. Yeah, true. That's
the closest that Porsche gets to making a GTI. I mean, I'm acknowledging it's heavy and big.
I get it compared to things like a nice 2000, but that's not a bus either. In 2021,
Tom's daughter was front facing and he was no longer stuck in large car purgatory. Okay.
He sold the 228i. Spent $22,000. The magic number. I'm noting a trend here. Okay.
On a 996 manual coupe. As a family car, it's great. It does everything the 228i could do.
Costco with all four of them, amusement parks, no problem. We can getaways absolutely.
It's more fun to drive and when the back seats are empty, it's every bit as fun overall as the Honda.
Sure, there are times when the weather's perfect or in low speed twisties that voice in the
back of his head now says a convertible would be good right about now. Sure. Or don't you wish
the engine would scream more, but he says most of the time that voice is saying,
that's pretty cool or the S2000 couldn't really do that.
And then he does note sitting in traffic all cars become the same.
Now when he writes to us, he said he's had his 996 for three years.
He's put over 30,000 miles on it and it's perfect. Well, most of the time, it's perfect.
Oh, okay. There we go. Except for the two three times a year when something needs fixing for
a thousand bucks, which is to be expected on a 25-year-old car with 140,000 miles.
Concerting that, it's actually been pretty reliable. Then there's the German maintenance and the
consumables. Yeah. Yeah. His S2000 got oil changes at jiffy loop for 70 bucks, full synthetic,
and the 996 by comparison is $300. Portia tax got it. Okay. Yeah. He says that's because there's
this 100 point inspection to make sure the engine isn't about to grenade itself. He says it's
S2000 went through one set of brakes, two or three sets of pads and 100,000 miles. The 996 needs
its second set of brakes in 30,000 miles. Okay. Yeah. All right. I got it. I got it.
So that's where he's at now. The car debate is what does he get next? The requirements are a manual
four-seat fun-to-drive 20 plus mile-to-gallon car for a budget of 40 to 50,000 dollars. But
again, he's only spent $22,000 in the past. He's never spent more than 22 grand on a car. It's
very funny. So if he's going to pay double, he needs to feel like he's getting more and it'd
better run for years with minimal care and beating. You're not asking a lot here, Tom. Are you?
He's got ideas for us to start with. He could stay put because at least things are paid off.
Two to four grand a year to keep the Porsche going is less than the new car payment would be,
and he realistically only has three to five more years while his son fills the back seat.
You're talking about the 9.11 is perfect. You're talking about you don't want large cars
and in three to five years, you're going to have two kids, neither of which fit in the back of
pretty much any two plus two in the market. There's exceptions, but nothing that's going to be as
small as you would like it to be. He sat in a GR86 at a car show. Doesn't think the back seat's
a big enough. Well, you're right because the kids are grown right now. So he said it's also a
performance downgrade. Yes, it's still a lot of fun. A lower mileage 996 replacement won't
feel like an upgrade, only if it's a target. Possibly. All right. He talks about 997s. He drove
the .1 in base in S form. The S was noticeable improvement over his 996. The base not so much,
but the .2 version might be out of the price range. I mean, we're getting into the car
nerdery. We are. We are in the second half of the generation after his 9.11. That's where we're at.
Yes, for a 991. 991. 991. He's not sure if you can find one in budget. 7 speed seems kind of
weird. He needs to drive one. And then he comes to this. The list of cars that he does not
think work begin with this. Yes. He sat in Mustangs. He's rented Chargers Camaro's. He couldn't
get over the lack of visibility and the feel like he's sitting in a bathtub. He thinks that the
McCahn is a boat. Just jump on in a challenger real quick. Yeah. Uh huh. Whichever of these three
that he drove was fun for about five minutes until he ran out of Tourettequotes. But here's the
thing. You can put your whole family in there and just talk about family. It's just family.
That's true. All you everywhere you go. It's just why do I have this car family?
Are they done at 11? Have the other two? I don't know. Do they come out yet? There's one another
one coming out. There's supposedly now there's a big push to shoot as much of the next one as they
can in L.A. Since it started being shot in L.A. And the L.A. Fire is another one to shoot in L.A.
I'm sure for reasons related to family. I mean, here's the thing. There's only supposed to be
one more. But I'll tell you right now. This is I'm calling the shop. Okay. Okay. If the next one
is a blowout financially, they'll make another one. If the next one does. Where does it end?
Kind of the same as the last few have done, which has been kind of a sliding scale of still
successful, but not a blowout anymore. It'll be the last. But if it for if we all go because it's
the last one, they'll make another one. What's the Sylvester Stallone endless franchise? It's now up
to four. Expendables? Expendables. Where it's pretty much just a movie vehicle to have all of his
friends in a movie with him. Yes. That's what this will turn into. Already has. 96. It already has.
We've run out of actors. The fact that those actors have done those movies for the better part of
20 years. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, moving on. Tom suggests M2 or M3s. He doesn't sound too excited. His
email is not excited. He says M2 M3 is followed by the words, I guess. You're not excited, Tom.
Yeah. That's not going to work. He drove 2016 M3. I love the power, but it's still rolled and
slopped like the 228 eye. Wow. And his BMW experience has been comparable to Porsche repair costs
with sub Porsche reliability. Okay. Ouch. His sister-in-law drives a golf. And he likes it whenever he
drives it. He wishes his wife would get her McCann bus or trade the McCann bus for a golf. Maybe
the next next car. Was that a typo? It's the next next car. Meaning the car after the one we're
trying to combine. My question is, what McCann do you have? If I take my wife's 2017
cayenne and I drive it at highway speeds and I take the adjustable suspension and I make it squat
down, it feels like 125% golf. And the McCann smaller than that. Which McCann do you have? I've never
thought the McCann felt big. I understand it feels bigger than other stuff you've had. But in the
pantheon of CUVs, of which there are minis, it's not a bus. Graham, you said your sister has the
golf R. Now I admit that is a hotter car than the McCann, but McCann's not a bus. Anyway, we're
trying to connect the dots here, moving on. Civic type R, he's a drive one. He does feel like it'll
be a major downgrade to go from a 911 to a Civic. Even if it's arguably the lowliest 911 and hot
a Civic. You're right, there's still a gap there, but the Civic type R is really, really good.
And then he says, how about the accurate tiger type S? Maybe he needs a drive one. Many
Cooper's and Clubman's probably the next next car. You're still trying to get your wife into a small
hatchback. I see where this is going. And then we have curve ball of the email. I did not see this
coming. The DB7 or DB9, he goes there sexy, but does he have the motivation for leaving an old
German car? And does he think having an old British car will work at all as a comparison?
You want to talk about cars that feel bigger than they should. DB7, DB9, these are not cars that I
would describe as like light and chuckable. They're going to drive closer to the Mustangs and
Cameras you don't like than the 911 and S2000s that you do. And I'm not saying that the DB7, DB9
can't be fun to drive because they can be. Absolutely. I don't really see that working here.
Tom suggests a two car solution. Okay. Boxster or a similar Cooper or something else, but he says
the juggling cars thing is the problem. It's annoying. It's annoying, but he does acknowledge he's
done it before. So okay. Yes. We have choices. I'm glad to see your budget double. If we're in
the 40 to 50,000 range, let's spend some money, huh? We're not shocked that Paul's going to throw
it down. Keep going. I initially thought, you know, I just have to get the thoughts that come to
me right away and just write things down like a 2025 BMW M5 touring. That's more than twice your
budget. It's an actual vote. No money. I mean, no manual. Yeah. And then I remembered what you were
saying about your M2 and M3. You were you were less than enthusiastic. Yes. Because I thought,
oh, BMW M3 manual only 470 horsepower. They're 60 plus thousand dollars used. And you weren't too
excited about them. So how about a Cadillac V series blackwing CT5 four-door manual rear-wheel drive
fund to drive 668 horsepower supercharged V8 newly refreshed interior for the 2025 model 4123 pounds.
But that means it's over 1200 pounds lighter than the M5 touring. It's all relative is what you're
saying. See? How I spun that. But they start at 70 plus thousand dollars. And the one you want
is the new one. Yes, it is. So let's go used Cadillac CT4 V series blackwing because they're in the
sweet spot of 45 to 52 thousand dollars. You can find one in manual four-door rear-wheel drive
fund to drive. And it's a Chevy. I mean, it's got a Cadillac badge and all that stuff. But, you know,
there you go. Yeah, yeah. It's gonna run. You want something low maintenance. And you know what?
At this point, we still haven't driven either of those cars. And sure, I am recommending that CT4
V series blackwing. But we've heard and read so many positive things about it. I think Tom,
it's at least worth drive homework. I agree with that. I agree with that. It's definitely worth driving.
Tom, I'm going to say something controversial. And it's extra controversial in Los Angeles.
There are other cars than Porsche. And I'm also going to say this. I'm sure white noise. I know.
What are you talking about? I'm also going to say this as the guy that loves my Lotus Elise.
There's nothing wrong with big cars. I thought you were going to say and steer him away from a manual
because of LA traffic. No, look, if you want to do a manual LA traffic, I get it. I mean, you also
have our guy that has experienced EVs properly. And I'm going to circle back to that in a minute and
made them work for you in LA. And I totally get that. But there are plenty of big cars that are
fun to drive. I feel like the tone of your email has two things in it. One, anything that's not
Porsche is probably isn't worth my money. And two, anything that's bigger than a golf can't possibly
be good to drive. And I push back on both those statements. Okay. I understand that's your life
experience. But I really want to encourage you, especially I want to encourage you as a person with
a son that's nearly as tall as me now. Those two little ones won't be little for very long.
True. And you're going to get into a conversation where it doesn't matter what the two plus two is,
they simply don't fit. So now you're in that conundrum of, I have to get bigger. So then you have
to embrace, I mean, look, the thing that was the turning point for me was my fate going, oh,
this is amazing. This is really cool. It's not something I ever would have sought out because of
this crazy show. I now have one and I'll look that's broken now. But I loved my fate. One of you
sent me a perfect W12, a 05 W12 for sale, not that long ago. I almost don't want to admit how
tempted I was. I didn't have the money. It wasn't that expensive, but it was a W12 pristine like
either O5 or O6. It was right. And I was like, you know, and that was a good stop. It's not a
stop. It's not a car. Yes. Anyway. So you have the portion of disease. I get it. But but I think also
the other thing that's crept in here is that thing we've talked about before and that is once
somebody owns a 911, because the 911 has uniqueness about it, nothing else could possibly be fun
because I've had 911s. And I don't agree with that either. So I really want you to branch out
and drive a bunch of stuff. You have mentioned that the 86 you think would be a disappointment.
You know what the 86 is Tom? I hate to say this. But that S2000 that you lie in eyes,
the GR86 is the S2000 with back seats. It's that car. But he's saying kids and the growth of
kids. I know. I know. I know. But if you're buying, there's been mentioned in here where you think
you could get by with having another 911 for the next three to five years and you're right,
that is your window to make this work. If you really are wanting to shop, I want you to drive,
at least drive the GR86. It's not a Porsche badge. It isn't. I get it. It doesn't have a ton of power.
I get it. But you love that S2000, which was less powerful than your 996. And you keep referencing
the S2000. It's an S2000 with back seats and a hard top. So at least drive it. There's nothing
wrong with keeping the 996, but $4,000 a year in maintenance. I think we can all agree is a lot.
It's a lot. And I don't spend that kind of money on maintenance. I mean, now that your 928 runs,
you're right. You don't. Prior to that. That was a shot. But I also felt like I had to acknowledge
the elephant at the room. The 997 that you want is the .2 because I want, if you're going to get a 997,
and I actually like the 997 very much, we're talking like 09 to 2012, still hydraulic steering.
It's my favorite body shape and scale. The 992, here's the crazy thing. That's the one you want,
pardon me, the 991 or 992. That's the one you want for back seat space because the car got bigger.
But the 997 is still the correct size I would say for a 911. I think that's a worthwhile upgrade
to get an S one of those. But again, how long will you be able to have it because of those growing
kids is the unknown. I really like the Acura type S for you because Acura is still a premium brand.
You didn't go Porsche Tejanda. You went Porsche to Acura. Acura is still a luxury brand. You're not
going to see very many. They drive wonderfully well. I wonder how much you're going to miss having
rear wheel drive. That's an unknown we haven't talked about here. You may really miss having rear wheel
drive. You've gone from rear drive, rear engine to front drive, front engine. These are not the same,
okay. But the Acura is superb. It's superb because of that. Good seats, great technology. The
kids will fit in the back for a long, long time. If you're really trying to buy a car, Tom, for the
next six or so years, you got to get something like the type S because that's the one that's going to
grow enough with your kids and your family. But I want you to drive that car. I have two wild cards
because one's too much money and the other one you'll see why it doesn't work. And I have a two-car
option that I think might actually be to solve. Wild card one is a BMW but none of the ones you've
mentioned. It's the one M. It feels smaller and better than any of the BMWs you've brought up.
The problem is they start at 65 grand and they go to 100. Yes, I mean, I approve. Yes, I think you
would genuinely really like a BMW one M. They have somewhat usable back seats, much more so than a 9.11.
Well, not much, but more so than a 9.11. More than a 9.11, for sure, for sure. Fantastic hydraulic steering,
great engine, great handling. It's just a car full of personality. The problem is it's above your
budget. Again, they start at like 65 and the nicest one on the planet is running 100 right now, which
is simultaneously painful and worth it. The other one I thought of that comes out of our
conversation about the EV came in at the top of the podcast. It's not a manual, but you've embraced EVs
before and you really like Porsche. Rear wheel drive Ticons are right around your budget.
The rear wheel drive base Ticon. It gets you Porsche dynamics and handling. It gets you EV
commutability. It gets you back seats, back doors in one car. That's not bad. It's not a manual.
The prices have come down. It's not a manual and that's a bummer. But I really think that is a
worthwhile wild car to consider though after all of this, Tom, I think your best option is the
two-car option. Get yourself a very nice 981. And I say that only because you're being a stickler
on the things that are required for you. So if we're really going to be a stickler, I think we
have to do it in two cars. I like some of my single-car options, but the two-car option is a 981
Boxster manual. That is the teens of the Porsche Boxster, like the 2015 or so, the kind of like
your Cayman or Mandy's Boxster. So a 981 Boxster manual that is going to be a nice modern car,
fantastic to drive, and then lease. Don't buy lease a mini-e. Fun little commuter car.
Here's my question. I think you could lease the mini-e for about what it is costing you
annually to keep the 911 going. Yeah. And you wouldn't pay for gas. And you're used to doing that
as a commuter. You're shuffling cars again, but in my mind, that actually is the solve. That's
really good. Tom, you've got lots of choices. You've got some decision making. Do my friend

Texas and the tagline here is it's all about the AC. So you put that line out there and I'm going
to go ahead and give you the headline. I'm going to ruin where we're going and then we'll get
into it for real angel and that is if you really are buying a car for an AC just buy the Chevy.
Just get a Chevy V8. We can figure out what body style later but not even knowing the rest of your
needs. I just know that what you need to get is a Chevy V8 wrapped in some shape to accomplish the
rest of your needs. If we're leading with AC, that's the answer. We should read the car debate
backwards and see if we get there. Perfect. Yes. We want to get to the beginning because here
he tried an escalade and it didn't care for its dynamics because the escalates terrible for
dynamic. That's not why you buy it. I know, but it's probably got great AC. It has fantastic.
It sits in idle in a hundred degree weather. It goes how cold would you like to be? That's true.
That's what Chevy V8s do. I grew up in Texas is why you buy one. All right. Let's start from the top.
Angel's keeping his BMW 135 convertible with manual and his wife is absolutely keeping her
2016 toy to Highlander limited platinum. So he needs a car to road trip with the fam that can hold mom
both kids in the second row so she can help them while the third row is reserved for luggage space.
So let's picture this real quick. Angel's driving his wife is in a bench in the back seat
dealing with both kids. She would rather sit back there with both kids. That means if there is a third
row, it's laid down flat so they can use it for cargo. This is how they want to road trip as a family.
She wants to be in the back seat with the kids, but the problem is that the Highlander has captain's
chairs, which means if she sits in one of those, that means there's a kid in the other captain's
chairs. And now one of the kids has to sit behind her. So that doesn't work. We're chasing
benches, which is weird 20 years ago. Everybody had a bench. And now you have to like, can I get this
in a bench? Because everybody wants to put captain's chairs in now. Even the minivans, there's all
captain's chairs. It was a selling point. It was absolutely. Well, they road trip from Dallas to Austin
out to Western Colorado out to East Tennessee every year. Wow. So they've got good four or five
road trips a year. This car will also handle school runs and his 50 mile highway commute.
So he needs a refined ride, quiet cabin, great stereo, strong AC and room for two kids and car
seats. This is all important. And he says his wife is a normal size lady, so they don't need crazy
space, but she'd like to be comfortable. Like it. Among the flaws, besides the captain's chairs
of the Highlander, it's somewhat loud at 85. The large wheels crash over road imperfections.
And it's time to get the big SUV. They're in Texas. The thing I'm confused about here, Angel,
is with that description, why is the 2016 Highlander staying? Thank you. Okay, moving on. Sorry,
I keep getting ahead of the conversation, but okay, it's not going anywhere. And yet here's all
the flaws and why we don't like it. Yeah, I'm confused as well. But okay, all right, seems like we're
finding a car to duplicate what that one does. But all right, they tried a GLS in Colorado. The AC
was not keeping up. So a GLS in July, that was that wasn't working. Okay, good to know. Again,
they tried that escalade and did not care for the dynamics, but it's a shipping crate with leather
on wheels. It dynamics is not the reason we get it freezing. Yeah, but you notice there's no note
there about AC problems. This is exactly what I'm saying. Angel road in the Lexus LX, it seems
all right, although unlikely to be engaging, right? So Angel is considering an X7 to friends say that AC
cannot cannot keep up in August in Miami and Dallas. Okay, considering a cayenne, Volvo XC 90
recharge, out of Q7, accurate MDX type S. That's see, that's a good one. It is, yes, like that MDX
type X S or the TX plug in or hybrid. Any suggestions, the obvious answer might be Sienna, but the
weak for cylinder might get old doing 90 miles an hour in the mountains of Tennessee in Colorado.
Now, the new Sienna, I will give it one defense. The new Sienna is hybrid only and that helps with
the power. It does. I don't know how much that helps with the AC, again, Chevy V8, but helps with
the power. Angel says the XC 90 with the integrated booster seat would allow them to see their son
in the middle seat without a car seat. Their two year old daughter would get her seat on one side
and mama get the other seat. Is this the obvious choice? I want to just stop here real quick. It's
really good. It's very compelling because the XC 90 has essentially a built-in booster that comes
out of the center seat like the center seat like folds in a way to become an actual certified booster
seat. You can put a little one in and you so you have a booster without having to add anything to
the car which removes a car seat out of the equation. I just talking about a seat for your wife and
the kids angel. Yes, that's the answer. If that's all we're talking about, yes, but that doesn't have
a Chevy V8 in the front and that's problem because has the EAC positively going to keep up? That's
all I'm saying. I mean, I think they're great because of the power. They drive really well. I
think the Volvo is really it's up there really up there. Angel would love a cayenne, but he doesn't get
the sense that the three across will work great or then adult will still want to sit in between two
car seats. Q7 is another great option since it has latch anchors in the middle seat. So kids could
go in the middle and one side. Mom gets the other side. What is he missing or not considering?
Is the telluride even a worthy competitor in this space? Angel, I do think you should get rid of
the highlander. I'm very confused about duplicating that car's purpose. If we yeah, whatever we get
and by the way, notice in this email, there is no budget anywhere. True. I mean, clearly we've
got a range because of the car he's talking about, but you're right, there's no actual budget thrown
down. But the highlander must stay because of all the things they don't like about it and the fact
we're duplicating what it does. Very confused. You know, Angel, my initial thought that I think
won't work. Well, I know it won't is the GV80 Genesis. Oh, okay. Superb. The back seats do not
fit your needs because it has that center console. Oh, yeah. Okay. And then you suggested the TX. I
love your MDX type S idea. I am all about that. If Volvo XC90 is first, then the accurate MDX
type S is very much a second place for me. And you said the TX plug-in or hybrid funny. I was going
to suggest the grand highlander. You love everything about the highlander your wife does. Yeah.
Let's sell that. Get the bigger version. They added the word grand. It's a three-room. Now slightly
larger. Be sure you get it with a bench seat. Yes. Look, I have not driven the TX neither of us have,
but it is pretty much the Lexus version of the grand highlander. So choose one of those, choose the
powertrain that you like. And it does have the interior space for your needs because how I'm looking
at this is now. This is now. The things are going to change and then we can go to something smaller,
like a cayenne or something more power, you know, something stuute guard flavored. We'll say stuute guard
flavored. I don't know if that's caramel or not, but I understand where we're going. You know,
I'm saying it's AMG flavored or something cool from BMW X5s. You know, they're all very cool.
But I do think you need to look at right now. It's got to have to be a little bit utilitarian too.
I don't want to suggest something so luxurious. You're like, ah, not another stain. That is the
grand highlander. That is the Lexus TX in my mind. I do want to acknowledge something real quickly.
The Lexus TX and the grand highlander are so interchangeable that my dear friend and co-host Paul
went on the launch for the grand highlander. And then we did a test drive of the TX
that he has forgotten about. They are utterly interchangeable. Did I forget about the TX?
It's okay. It's fine. We did it about a year ago, but you had gone to the launch of the grand
100, which is why it made such a big impression on you. The TX is the grand highlander in Lexus
trim. And our big debate, the big thrust of our Lexus TX conversation is, is this really any
worth getting over the grand highlander in the first place? I mean, the tier is quite lovely.
It's nice, but it's not. I don't know that it's worth the upgrade. You may as well look at
grand highlander. That's kind of where we were on the test drive anyway. So just FYI.
Are you implying that I think it's forgettable? I'm just saying the takeaway is all I'm saying.
It's no big deal. Let's put it that way. All right, angel. Those are my suggestions. I love
the Volvo for you. Truly. I think you're talking yourself there. I don't think that there's
some serious thing. I mean, we could suggest the CX 90, something like that. I actually like the
turbo SCX 90 for you. The big three rows. Sure. Yeah, those are very cool. They're really cool.
Those are pretty nice. Very nice interior. Great engine. Yeah. The hybrid. I didn't love.
Didn't either. The turbo S would might be the sweet spot. Okay, so there you go. That's the Mazda.
That's another good one. But still, I love the Acura for you. I love either the grand highlander
or the TX for you. TX. Yeah, I'm with you. Yeah. I got you. Angel, the big thing that's interesting
here is your need for a second row bench because it's not as common as you'd think. It's so easy
to find these cars on a dealer lot and the spec is captain's chairs because everybody wants the
captain's chairs. You have a legitimate reason to not want them. That is a real use case. Yeah.
But it's not that common. So what happens is you almost get into a situation where you need to be
looking at things that were designed to be five seaters and not seven seaters because they're
going to have a nice bench, which is what led you to the cayenne. But I understand that you don't
have to latch things everywhere you want. I'm going to give you an odd one that I thought of.
Luggage that feels like it was made for you guys. The Honda passport, not the pilot, the passport.
It doesn't have a third row option at all, but it has an enormous cavernous back area where
they normally would put the third row on the pilot. And because it is only two rows, it has a big
old bench seat on the pilot. It would work. It's just it would work. But I'm just saying Honda
passport, solid three liter V6. So it's the three liter V6. It's not a Chevy V8. But three
liter V6 is going to have a better chance of getting good AC out of the out of events. So I'm just
saying Honda passport is the crazy one that you hadn't thought of. If you really are shopping for
road trip with the family space, good AC. I know you don't like the dynamics of the Chevy SUV
products, but you need a Tahoe. You just need to get a Tahoe. Just that's you're talking about getting
the bigger boy SUV for the family. Go get yourself a Chevy Tahoe with a nice big V8.
Crank the AC down to we would like it to be a fridge in here. Get a little bit tint if you need.
That's the answer. Huge back bench. That's that is the answer here for your needs. Your once
change it, your once make the XC 90 interesting. I do think it would be good. I love that little
booster thing that Volvo does. Volvo's been obviously family focused forever. So it's very good.
I think the AC is probably pretty good, but that AC can't keep up with a Chevy sitting there in
idle. Nope. But anyway, just letting you know, the last one here that you mentioned in passing,
and I really want to land on it harder and Paul likes it as well. And that is I really do think you
might be the perfect buyer for the Acura MDX type S. It's amazing because you've said here a couple
times how much you'd like to have a cayenne and it doesn't quite work. The MDX is almost cayenne
like performance in that type S trim. But it has good usable seats. You have to play with the car
seats to make sure it's got all the latches and attachments that you want in that second row,
but it's not that hard to get that with a second row bench. And it is phenomenal to drive,
get a lot of tinted glass turned the AC way down in the X type S. There you go. Angel, thank you
so much. You've got some deciding do. You've got many options. Angel really appreciate it,
and we're looking forward to hearing what you get. The McDonald snack wrap is back. You brought it

On questions, I'll start here with Martin who's written in before on Facebook. Do we think
there will be a shift away from all screens and cars and back to more tactile options? Martin,
yes, but it depends on the part of the market. It's already happening. Remember when CD
changers came out and blue rate changers came out and it was like thousands of dollars for this
technology, and now you can get one for like, I just like to take that. Can I? You can just walk in
with like a coupon and walk out with one. So this is the reality of touch screens. For a few minutes,
they were like, oh my gosh, that's super expensive. And it's only in the high end cars. And now
they're so cheap to make and the UI, everybody so used the UI that they're in everything.
So we're going to have the flip back to the higher up the food chain you get on a car. The more
they spent money on buttons and switches and that kind of stuff and the low end stuff is going to
have screens. TRA is 16 on Instagram says, what's the craziest car you've seen on sport tires?
His mother-in-law has Michelin Pilot Sport 4s on her Honda Passport. Love it. We saw our friend Greg
who had Pilot Sports on a Honda Odyssey. Yes, Pilot Sports and Coilovers because he's so used to
driving his track prepped cars that he kept getting in his wife's minivan and just said, we have
to fix this. I'm pretty sure he sold that. And they went to an old BMW garage. Who's the second
buyer of that car? Do they have any idea what they're getting? Coilovers at performance tires
on a minivan? I don't think so. Well, maybe Angel. Maybe he wants to. There you go. There you go.
That bench and still fun to drive for it is very nice. Who knows? Cars for thoughts from Kirk Meier,
a non-M yellow clown shoe BMW that sold for $9,950 or a black Alpha 4C that sold for $35,000.
Do we think these are good prices on very fun cars? I think those are steels on those two cars.
35,000 dollars Alpha 4C. Yes, please. And a $9,000 almost just under $10,000 yellow clown shoe
non end. That's still a really cool car. $10,000 for the car. It runs well than yeah.
The proper driver on Instagram says he would like to pick our brain. I have no idea what that's
about. But okay, we're welcome to interact with you. He said, how do we, how's the best place?

you're picking our brain on, but I'm very curious about it. I will say this to you. We are
much more likely to respond to that than we are a direct message on Instagram. Also on Instagram,
Wade W. Knows H2O ST44 asks, if we ever get tired of people saying that cars should only be
practical, I don't get tired of it at all. I don't think anybody around here says, oh,
cars should be practical. It's nothing but Porsche's headed to the skewers all the time.
Kayens and well, I guess, kinds of practice. Well, still, we see sports cars in the winter
in Park City. So maybe it's where there's plenty of people that that that's their perspective.
Here's the flip side. We know plenty of people in town who have looked at us in complete mystery.
When we tell them we think maybe they shouldn't buy another outback for their next car after
they've had like six. They're like, well, why should I just get another outback? We're like, there
is a whole world of vehicles out there beyond them. But here's the problem. Some of those folks,
the way they use their outback, they tell me the reason that they use their outback and I go,
yeah, you just need another outback. So it does happen. Back to Tom's email at the top of the podcast.
How many seats do you need? Don't get another outback. Just a 9-11. My neighborhood is full
of husband and wives. And they both have outbacks. And when the garages are up and I go by,
I just see two outbacks. Like sometimes they're not even different colors. Sometimes they're both
white or both you had forest green like two out two for a while. You had a neighbor across the street.
They had same year, same model, same trim white outbacks. Well, the husband traded in a ram truck to
get a white outback to match his wife's wife's at this point. You just grab a key and you walk
into the garage and you just get in which everyone the lights blinked because they're identical.
It's like, well, these clothes are clean. I guess I'll wear that. Well, that car's there. I guess
I'll take that what it utter waste anyway, separate thing baffling. Thomas G 22 asked me. He said,
a few podcasts ago I mentioned I had a car barn. This is a place where people park their vehicles.
How'd I get into that? I don't think it's something I really got into. Thomas, I just I only had
two car garage on my house and a little bit of a space on our land to actually build a little
structure. And so we did that. And so I overbuilt which everybody said, oh, so you can fill it with
your own cars. And I said, no, I really do have a budget. So there's a couple spaces in the back
that I rent to a couple of friends that and sometimes that rotates out. So if you know anybody in
Park City needs a space to rent, I might have one available, but might is the key thing. It's not
like some big warehouse with a lot of spaces. There's a couple back there. I've got one for my car
and a couple others. And I do rent those out. And that works out okay, but it's not really
something I got into as much as I was like, well, I got an extra space over here. And it's worked.
Daniel asked a question that we haven't count. It hasn't come up in a while. He said, do we have
a preference or a disdain for floor mounted pedals versus roof mounted pedals? It's a very
different deal. Yeah. The floor mounted pedal thing is a classic car reality. You'll find them in a
lot of older German cars. 911s are famous for having them. I like them. They take getting used
to every single time I get into car with four mounted pedals. I go, oh yeah. And there's like
an adjustment period. And you realize this sounds really strange. You don't use your ankles like
that normally when you drive. You're suddenly using your ankles differently. It's like that's really
weird. I don't have a problem with it. It's just that it's an adjustment every time. I know there are
people out there that just love floor mounted pedals. I prefer, I know this sounds weird. I prefer the
pushback of a ceiling mounted pedal. I like the way the movement is. I just prefer it.
But the floor mounted pedals are cool. And it's a fun thing to get used to and enjoy.
