I'll give you guys a bit of a challenge, which we'll talk about a little bit later.
But let's crack on with some car updates.

It's been a busy car week.
Obviously last Tuesday night's podcast went, I was going to say unexpectedly,
but there were people that fully expected it to happen.
So we bought an Odyssey on the podcast last week.
Not just any of the Odyssey, but the one that I bought new in 2004 is now
back in the world.
Well, I bought it.
So it's technically an Ed Tom Bunting's motors car.
Just out of curiosity, David, what did it feel like when you saw it,
like when you walked up to it for the first time after all these years?
It was surreal.
It was the best way to describe it.
I've actually got a little video I'll send you before we actually,
we waited outside for it because you go in and sort out the money and all that sort of stuff.
And then they said, I'll wait here.
Well, someone will go and get it because there are hundreds of cars down there,
hundreds of cars.
So we could see it.
It was like a shark moving through shallow water.
You could just see the roof rails above all the cars.
All like, there it is.
There it is.
It's coming.
It turned into the area just in front of where we were standing.
There were three people in it.
Why?
I wasn't paying for other people.
Like I didn't want to, you know, I just wanted the car.
And the, yeah, they had a couple of the others workers.
They were running people around in it to pick up other cars sort of thing.
So handy seven-seater, I suppose.
What the hell?
But we were pleasantly surprised with the condition.
I mean, it's certainly a pristine, but it will need, you know,
decent cut and polish, but the interior, while it's, again, you know,
needs a good clean, it will come up really well.
Yeah.
It's surreal is the best way to describe it.
It was, but I got into it.
It smelled the same.
I don't think it meant smoked in.
It was absolutely spotless.
And so it actually felt very comfortable.
Shifted nicely through the gears.
Did it seem like it, it seemed like it's had a life or was it,
you reckon it's, it's, it's kilometers were not overly thrashed,
but, but, but cherished.
Who would, other than people on this podcast, do you know many people
that cherish their cars, especially if they've got multiple
children requiring a seven-seater?
Not necessarily, but sometimes, sometimes.
Sometimes you can be lucky.
Look, it, let me answer that question properly in a couple of weeks
time when we've had a good, good rummage through it and a good
clean and a good scrub of it.
Okay.
But the tires are good.
You know, it, it did, of course, typical graze car that you would buy,
drove off.
It had an engine warning light come on, which is, you know,
not unusual.
Wasn't mentioned in the ad and probably wasn't on often those things
once the car heats up properly and the like it.
But yeah, it, it, it's running much better now.
It has a new fuel pump.
So it, once we filled it with petrol, it wasn't happy at all,
but it has a fuel pump.
And this week it's actually getting though the workshop was flat out,
but we're getting checked over road with you this week and see what
else needs to be done to it.
But yeah, exciting prospect to have it back in the, back in the family.
So am I able to ask what is the possible plan for this car?
Good question.
Good question.
Let's ask me next week.
But the key, the, the important thing was, I mean, the gearbox seems fine.
I mean, it shifted beautifully and smoothly through all the gears.
There was no delay between, you know, going to reversal drive,
all those sorts of things.
Did make any strange noises.
Road really nicely actually.
And good question.
Again, I'm not, not completely sure.
I haven't had a good look under it yet, but it wasn't rattly and horrible.
And like you would imagine the 3000, the 300,000 K car to be,
somebody even did mention it to the fill of the fuel pump in said,
wow, he said it drives much better than the 300,000 K car has got any right to.
Okay.
If you've driven, I've driven plenty of euros and stuff with,
with that sort of case on them and they still drive great.
So the bones are all there, which is what you want.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
So that's exciting.
So that's the, that's the Odyssey.

Saturday, we had a big car club get together, which two of the four people
on this, three of the four people on this podcast attended,
which we have a 40 foot container with our club that we have a lot of old spare parts in,
and we usually have a meeting there once a month.
Well, this, this month we decided to do a twilight meeting rather than a Saturday morning meeting.
And it seems like it was a really good idea because I think we ended up with about 45 people there, I think.
I had a coffee van, we had barbecue, and the weather was absolutely perfect.
Lucky considering what the last couple of days have been like a bit of a washout had, had we waited, but it was perfect.
The weather was great.
The turnout was great.
There was some really interesting cars there.
There was some new members.
We had new members come along with everything from a 96 Acti under Acti K truck to a four, four week old Civic Type R.
So a 26 spec, 26.
Wow.
Yeah, one of the very last spec cars.
Another, another guy that was there.
I met many years ago before I started with New Life, so over 40 years ago when I was working in the public service.
And we've kept in touch over the years.
He lives in the same suburb.
He's always been a bit of a car guy coming to a little bit of money in recent years and decide he'd always wanted an S600.
So he's bought a Honda S600.
His first Honda.
So go for it.
Nothing like buying an early 60 year old car for your first, first taste of the brand.
I know, right?
Funny how.
But the other cool thing, I won't, I won't go on about it, but the other cool thing was this week actually was a really good anniversary for me because
I shared on social media, but the, it's 30 years ago this week since a mate and I did the Dutton rally to Adelaide for the last Adelaide Grand Prix.
So most, a lot of us will know of Dutton in Richmond, Dutton garage as it is now.
Long bean purveyors are very fine exotic cars.
And the back in the day when the Grand Prix started in Adelaide, they would run a rally every year from Melbourne to Adelaide for the rally.
And so it was five days and you do a series of tests over the five days.
You wouldn't just drive Melbourne to Adelaide.
We actually went up via Shepard and I think Swan Hill.
Oh, yeah, that way.
Yeah, up through Mildura across to Renmark or something like that in South Australia, then down through the Barossa Valley into Adelaide that way.
So you do, there were motor carna stages and there were sprint stages, there were navigation stages and all that sort of thing each day as part of the drive.
And my 1970 Honda N360 scamp.
So two cylinder air cooled little, little red rocket.
A mate and I from the club actually entered that car in the rally and had lots of people poking and laughing at us on the first night.
And saying, oh, how cute.
Look at that by about day two or three.
They weren't laughing quite so much because we actually blitzed a lot of the navigation stages.
Murray, the guy from the club who came with me was a gun navigator and the actual current Victorian motor carna championship at the champion at the time.
Oh, wow.
I didn't know that about him.
Yeah, he's a very good driver.
And hence I've got some fantastic photos of the scamp on three wheels.
Three wheels.
So we actually blitzed the field.
So we ended up 16th outright out of 145 cars, I think it was, which was pretty cool for a little two cylinder air cooled car.
50 year old, actually well, 50 years old then.
Well, it was 25 years old then.
And we had a brilliant, brilliant week.
So it's been really fun looking through some photos and reminiscing about that and remembering that.
The whole thing started because I'd seen the Dutton cars, the Dutton rally cars the day before the Grand Prix on the Saturday would actually do a lap of the track, you know,
with the commentary of which cars are which and stuff like that.
And I always thought how cool it would be to do that in the scamp.
I talked to a few people and they said, well, you know, you don't pay for yourself.
You get sponsorship, you know, so we were lucky enough to get some sponsorship from under Australia.
How did you go about getting that done?
Like, did you just say, hey, could you guys sponsor us?
Or like, or did you?
Oh, interestingly, Kat's sister at the time was working in event management and things like that and event development and the like.
So she put a package together like that they could hardly refuse, you know, it was a marketing opportunity, you know, for Honda and the like,
the head of Honda Public Relations at the time was wrapped because we got in early and they gave us some money,
which allowed us to rebuild the engine in the car or freshen it up and pay for our accommodation,
the money they gave us paid for our accommodation and Adelaide for the week and stuff.
Oh, that's awesome.
And covered the entry fee to the rally.
So it was it was fantastic and he just thought it was gold because after that they had a couple of people with NSX's and things like that,
you know, wanting them to, you know, sponsor them.
And they said, I actually were already sponsoring a car in the Dutton rally.
So that was the perfect excuse not to have to deal with a whole lot of people that just expected that they'd be sponsored.
But the funny, the coolest part or the funniest part was Jeff Dutton who owned Dutton at the time was a customer of mine and lovely bloke.
I've known Jeff for a long, long time and his family.
And he said, Murray, my co-driver and navigator as a real numbers guy,
and he actually worked out that the two cylinder 360cc Honda scamp produced more kilowatts per litre than a Lamborghini Diablo with just like,
it just lacked severely in the in the liters department because it was a 0.36 of a litre.
So the Honda thought this was hilarious and they put out a press release to say that Honda's 25 year old entrant in Dutton rally produces more kilowatts per litre than a Lamborghini Diablo,
made a real big song and dance about it.
Jeff Dutton wasn't too enthused by that because he had imported a Diablo to do the rally that year.
It was the first Diablo in the country from memory.
He didn't talk to me for a little while after that.
We're mates now.
So that's water under the bridge, but it was hilarious.
So that's the scam.
One of the scams claims to fame.
So David, if I'm able to meet that guy and say, hey, remember that time an old Honda had more kilowatts per litre than your Diablo?
Do you reckon he'd quickly...
Probably was not too.
The really cool thing was that little car just ran so well and ran better and better every day.
The start line was in Ballarat and we sort of nursed it up to Ballarat.
It was the furthest I've ever driven it to Ballarat.
And then we had this whole rally ahead of us and we nursed it up there and stopped on the way.
You didn't give a break and kept going.
And then as we progressed through the rally, it just ran so well.
And as I said, got better every day.
The top speed it was happy at, you know, sort of climbed every day.
And it would sit on 60, 65 miles an hour for hours on end.
I mean, it was just great.
It was not...
It was noisy.
There's no two ways about that.
But it would sit happily on that speed.
But we'd bid the hotels at night and there'd be guys, you know, pulling differentials out
and they'd be changing clutches and all this sort of stuff in the motel car parks.
I said to Murray, shouldn't we like, you know, check or open the bonnet or something?
Nope.
Nope.
Just leave it as it is.
Just it needs nothing done to it.
And it just sailed all the way to Adelaide and round the track.
It was brilliant.
Really, really great.
Did you drive at home?
No, we actually put on a train to come home.
It had got a train ride home.
Yeah.
I... Kath actually came over from memory and we had a week or so in Adelaide seeing some friends after the rally.
And, yeah, the scampi went home on the train.
Oh, that's really cute.
It had earned a ride home.
Yeah, bloody hell.
That's like that's, you know, you and Ed have done some trips in small Hondas that probably shouldn't have done.
Yeah.
So...
It wasn't planned that way, I don't think, for them when they were built.
No.
It was more for like putting the streets of Kyoto, not doing 110Ks in the hour down freeways.
The cool thing was, you know, with the approach of the anniversary,
I actually charged the battery up because it had been sitting for a little while.
And took it for a drive yesterday and it was just started and beautifully.
It's such a great little car.
And I've had it longer than any other car now.
I've had it 35 years, so longer than two of my kids.
So it's really part of the family.
Longer than I've been alive, too.
Yeah.
That's a cracker.
So that's my long-winded update.

Well, I can make it pretty short and sweet.

No, honestly, I haven't been doing anything.
I just gave the blade a wash.

I also, with David, went to the gearbox on Saturday,
which was very, very well attended.
My TAFE classes had moved to Zoom.
So in order not to miss the gearbox,
I drove the hour and three quarters to a library,
parked in the car, did an hour on Zoom.
We're into the library.
Then when the library closed, came back out to the car.
Then my teacher just took a long time to wind up.
And then when she finally did,
I looked up at the gearbox.
The attendance was very, very good.
As David said, cars were great.
Weather was perfect.
Food was awesome, as always.
So that was really fantastic.
It was a cracker day for it, wasn't it, Jim?
It was just perfect.
You couldn't have asked for a day, like a better day.
The car gods really shone upon us that day.
They did.
And it was good catching up with you and Chad again as well.
So that was really, really fantastic.
And then drove home.
And the next day, I went to a Magna catch-up also with David.
I forgot about that.
So first, I met up with Mr. Regalsworth.
And I had thought I was going to be driving Magna.
However, she had apparently formed other ideas.
So I drove Mandy the Beige wagon.
And we met up at Williamstown with quite a few other Magna faithful.
And again, weather was really good.
It was a bit warm, but like it was really, really nice.
A great selection of cars there.
Fantastic banter.
Again, that really wonderful atmosphere that seems to form
around Magna events as well was very much present too.
Also saw Mr. Bunting's latest Magna as well,
as he has moved on the lost and now has a VRX.
So that was interesting.
But that was here.
That was really, really good.
And then drove home.
I think that day was about six hours of driving all up.
And then I have also booked in my Ford laser
to go and be towed to the mechanics next Tuesday
to see if it's accounted for project club plates
or project simulator.
So let's see how that goes.
And of course, next Tuesday is also the 50th anniversary
since the Gough Whitlam dismissal.

I've been in that room where he got the sack.
I've been in that room and I've sat in that chair three times.
In Governor House in Canberra.
We weren't allowed to take a photo in there,
but we kind of snuck in and took a photo.
Us teachers.
It was a bad thing on our camper camp excursion.
But it's just because I know you're a bit of a polybuff.
They've kept the room identical.
They've brought it back to how the pictures show
how it was in exactly that same time when he was fired.
So it's something that you should,
if you get the chance, just do it.
It's pretty cool.
So those are my, well, almost completely my updates.
The other one was in trying to find a picture of something else.
I found a taken a picture of my odometer from November 10th,
two years ago when I hit 400,000 Ks.
And it looks like I will pretty much hit it down to the,
I'll hit 500 down to the day, I think.
So because I'm on 499, 196.
You are not far away.
Not far away.
So longest wind up to half a million.
So once that farming passes, all the people who listen can go
finally enough about the stupid odometer.
But yes.
I think I'm waiting for the million, mate.
Yes, but I won't do weekly updates for that.
Jim, put it this way.
If Scotty took six years to do the 31,
we can give you like four years to do the million.

So, yeah, so the other issue I had,
which is a nice issue to have is after came back from Magna,
it's like the marketplace algorithm just went,
yeah, everything you could possibly want.
And I was stuck between trying to avoid it,
but also like being unable to resist the temptation of looking
at the same time, you know?
So, yes, but there's a couple of things that have caught my eye
at the moment.
So I have to watch this space.

There's a lot of interesting cars out at the moment.
Lots of Magna's.
Yes.
I think the algorithm is speaking to all of us really.

V6 in South Australia that popped up yesterday.
Oh, I missed that.
I missed that.
What was that?
The TSV6 at Ann that popped up today.
Oh, okay.
The bluey green colour.
I can't remember what it's called.
Beautiful colour.

The other two things actually, one was yesterday I had a curriculum
day at work and I got petrol afterwards,
popped into my local petrol station,
and the guy served me said,
oh, Magna, I saw a video about that in Adelaide.
It looks really, really good.
I said, yes, it was.
I was late.
He said, oh, it looks fantastic.
That was cool.
And the second thing was that having curriculum day yesterday,
I work with my aunt now, disclaimer,
she is my favourite aunt,
so I let her get away with being a little bit unfiltered.
But like I went into the building and the first colleague we found,
she pointed my shirt and said,
can you believe he's celebrating the most boring car
made in the 20th century to which I immediately replied,
says the woman who drives a Kluger.
Whoa.
That's some, that's funny words, Jim.
I'm here for it.
Because the Kluger is not a good driver.
I would prefer to drive a Magna over a Kluger.
So, yeah, she didn't reply after that.
So I think I considered that.
Yeah.

And how was your week?
My week.
So I've been going through my cars, actually.
So I drove the MR2, put that away, drove the Fiesta a fair bit,
put that away, drove the Typhoon on the weekend.
So I drove the Typhoon to the gearbox.
That was actually nice, nice to take that.
So I picked up Chad and I was helping Chad put his clock
in his TS Magna.
And he's kind of like loving that car even more,
which is quite funny.
So then we drove over and a few people had to go in the Typhoon,
Jim Baylow, cough, cough, cough.
I actually forgot to include that, yes.
That was sensational.
So just for some context, and I think you'd appreciate this,
Scotty and David, he got on the boost and then he just,
this was his reaction.
He just smiled and then he giggled away and I'm like,
Chad's like, he got the boost giggles, he got the boost giggles.
So he definitely did get the boost giggles.
And good friend of the club, Kenny got to drive that.
We swapped.
We actually swapped cars.
I drove his.
Oh, I saw it when you popped out the front.
Yeah.
So we swapped cars and he really liked the Typhoon.
I loved the Foroza.
I'm all about it.
I've been trying to keep an eye out for one,
but they just don't exist.
So yeah, I'm all about the Foroza.
I think that's really, really, really, really cool.
But it was the highlight of the day was to see Jim get the boost giggles.
And then I had to apologize profusely because I was like,
damn it.
Now I've got a,
there was got another car on his list that he wants to have.
And of course I drove that and then I had to drive home in a car with a CVT.
Yeah, just a little bit of a chalk and cheese moment there.
But yeah, it was nice to hear what people think of that car because,
you know, it is 21 years old now.
And but like, I remember Kenny hopped out and I think you mentioned the same thing, Jim.
Like you were just,
you guys were like surprised at how smooth it was and how smooth the power band is.
And it's not like a scary turbocharged car to drive.
It's quite linear.
So, you know, it was, it was good to take that and I drove that on the Sunday
and we caught up with Steph's family and they were in town.
So we, I was picked them up in that and drove them around.
And yeah, it was, it was good.
It was, it was nice to, nice to get that on the road again.
And like it just personified the reason to me why I need to cycle through my cars more
and just, just give them a little drive.
So I'm going to really try and do that.
I'm going to try to drive each car for a week.
Like, you know, one week on, you know, next one, next one, next one, next one.
And I think you're right, David.
It's something about like driving a car has been driven for a while.
It gets better the more you drive it.
And I do, I do agree with you on that 100%.
What else have I done?
I drove Steph's Forester needs a few things for it's in about less than a thousand
K's now for its service.
It needs, it needs a big steering, big wheel on because it's pulling to the left like,
like mad.
The air con compressor was always very noisy, but now it's very noisy and not really doing
much.
So I think it's pretty tired.
And then the other thing I need to do when I get a service is the clutch pedal.
I think the slave cylinder is a bit, how you going?
Cause sometimes the pedals are not happy after you leave it overnight or for a few days.
It's kind of down in the bottom.
So you got to kind of pump it up and it comes back to life.
Which is quite common on Subaru's apparently.
And they're an external slave cylinder.
So it's not too hard.
It's just, you got to take off the, off the intercooler and it should be just, just above
there cause that's where the, you know, where the gearbox is.
So I'll look at doing that and pricing things up through work and things over the next few
days and get that sorted.
But the only thing I'll have to drive this week is the Camry.
And I'm going to go pick that up tomorrow.
So I'm going to swap cars where the Camry's staying.

So I see you guys a bit of a challenge.
And I like sending people a challenge because the challenge is this time family cars, but
at different price points, but here's the kicker.
Different price points, but you cannot pick the same make twice.
So it has to be different makes for each of the price points.
Now the price points were five grand, 15 grand, 25 grand and 50 grand.
So something with a five in it.
So that was the theme of it.
Now, I'd love to see what you guys have chosen.
And I've also, I've got them saved on my screen.
And I'll share them through and I'll go through my reasonings through each one.
So normally on this show, I go last, but I'm actually more than happy to go first this time.
So if you guys wouldn't mind, I'd love to go first.
Yeah, go for it.
So we'll start with my cheapest car.
First one of my list.
I've went for a theme of wagons this time around.
I've just chosen wagons.
I am very partial to a wagon as we, as we all are, I think on this show because wagons are cooler.
But my first car for $5,000, which was actually at four grand is an 89 Volvo 240.
Nice.
240 wagon GL done a fair bit of case, but these are, these are quite reliable, robust vehicles.
They seem to have lasted the test of time.
And surprisingly enough, I did a bit of research on these.
And in Japan, they've got like such a cult following people like Restorum and do everything in Japan.
Like they've got to really be following.
But also here in Australia, like they're really big with the surfers and stuff.
Like they're all beaten and battered and hammered, but they still keep going.
And there's something to be said about an old wagon.
And I think if you're after a first starter wagon classic for the family,
so you've got like the nice Santa Fe to take, take the kids to school on, on during the week.
But if you want to go down to Williamstown for an ice cream and, you know, fiddle the kids in it,
you know, 89 Volvo 240 GL.
So small fixer opera cast out on news for a while, but it's, it's, it's kind of fair bit of work done.
Body's pretty straight.
So look, it's not too bad.
He's had quite a comprehensive list, but that's, that's my first car at four grand.
Just on that too.
With the beta bird would actually the 200 series Volvo's were in front of us
because they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of being on sale in Australia.
Well, there you go.
So, see, they're quite a loved car.
Was there, was there a fair few of them in Egypt?
Yeah, there were quite a few.
They also had a few hundred, a few 700 series as well, but there were quite a few there.
And on our drive up to Adelaide, we also bumped into a few on the way as well.
But yeah, no, they're very, very much loved.
And I have seen that one too, because they're getting quite dear now.
But no, yeah, that's quite affordable still really.
Yes, it is.
But, you know, the, like I'll go through the pictures for you guys,
but the foundations are quite, quite good.
So, yeah, it's, it looks, it looks pretty good according to the pictures there.
Next car, 15 grand.
That was pretty good.
Is a 2009 four territory turbo gear.
So it's an S Y Mark two.
So a late first generation territory turbo.
These are quite a good car.
They do plenty of K's, you know, quite reliably.
Like Anthony's one's got 300 kilowatts virtually at the wheel at all four wheels.
And it will do it all day every day.
Six speed ZF auto, you know, it's got, and being a gear comes with a little fruit.
So you've got your big hood scoop.
These have actually got a Typhoon engine, believe it or not.
So like they get the stronger rods.
So, so there, you know, they can take can take a bit of a beating,
but they were quite a nice thing.
Full leather, leather interior, reverse camera in some life.
Yeah, it's, it's, it's the, the leather they use in these wasn't the greatest.
I'm not going to lie, but the rest of the cars quite long lived in.
I think they decide to go a top mount.
I think they just didn't have enough space in the front or they couldn't get,
or they couldn't get the, you know, the front, front mount with that for compliance.
Cause it is, or they would have said, oh, you know, Subaru do it with their,
with their kind of, you know, SUVs, wagon sort of things.
You know, we could, we could do the same to try to tap into that market.
Make a little bit more kind of stand out a bit more.
Absolutely.
But I, I'm, I'm a fan of these and you know, at 15 and just over 15,
I think this would make a great family hauler, very thirsty,
but a great family reliable hauler.
But yeah, a bit of David prints on these seats.
I think it might need a bit more than David prints on these seats to be honest with you,
but, but you know, it's, they're, they're, they're a good thing.
Like that, you know, you got your electric pedals that come up to you and things.
So, so it's, you know, they were quite a well equipped vehicle.
And, you know, and it's a bit of an Aussie classic too.
Like, you know, if you're wanting to get into something Aussie built,
that's, that's quite rare and interesting.
I think that's, that's a really cool way of doing it.
Next one is my 25 grand car.
So these range from about 20, 15 to 28 grand, but I found this one for 20.
There's another one for 25.
That's a bit more monitor than this and a bit modified,
but this is an 07 Liberty GT tuned by STI.
So, so the tune by STI's were actual, you know, Australia.
So these pictures go through them.
I love these as a wagon.
The wheels are lovely on those.
So what was that, David?
The wheels are lovely on that.
They are, yeah, they're beautiful wheels.
I really wanted these for my forest at one point.
I've got the smaller version of these, which came on the, on the S edition,
which we're just still Enkeys, but these were the bigger Enkeys.
These were the 18s and one early 17s.
But they're like for me, this generation of Liberty is just,
it's the best looking one in my eyes.
And it still holds up really well today.
Being a manual too, I think it's quite cool.
It's still a good looking car.
And I, you know, I've always liked these.
And I like how they got STI in the seats embroidered and, you know,
it's got the big Brembo brakes on it.
And, you know, it was, it was quite a, you know, it was quite a good effort.
These are, and I think for, for 20 grand, you know, it's quite a good performer.
And you get all the drive grip and you get that safety,
that safety net of, of, of having that.
But, you know, it's an, and also to be relatively reliable provider.
You don't, you know, boost the hell out of it and, and, and get the whole,
oh, Subaru's blow head gaskets theme though.
If you, if they looked after there, they're okay.
So this was the 2.5 or two later.
This was a 2.5, which are known for having a little bit of issues,
but the main thing, the main 2.5s that hit issues with, with a single cam,
non-turbos, they had, they had, they had the, you know,
they, they would leak from externally in the head gaskets.
These ones, or internally, to be fair, these ones aren't as bad.
The turbos weren't as bad as, as people made them out to be,
just only when they were modified badly were they, were they bad.
But yeah, so I think for 25, for 25 grand, it's a, it's a cracking car.
Yes, it's a little bit older these days, but I think if you're,
if you're a bit of a driver and, and, and you like to drive,
I think that's, that's definitely, that's definitely a really good pick.
So like, I've picked one for your, you know, your, your classic family hauler,
your everyday hauler and the Territory Turbo.
So the, the classic one is your Volvo.
If you're a driver's person and you like a driver's car,
I think that's the one for you in the 20s.
And if you want to be the coolest that in the car park for 50 grand,
you can get an Evo Wagon.
It's David mentioned earlier at the start of the podcast,
but I was trying to keep my mouth shut because I already picked one.
So I'm, I do love an Evo Wagon.
I think they are very cool.
And the fact that you can get all the Evo goodness in a Mitsubishi Wagon,
you know, I think it's brilliant.
And, you know, you know, everything is cooler as a wagon as anyone would say.
And if you don't agree with me, you're wrong.
I'm sorry. That's just how it is.
But this is a really nice example.
I like the color too.
It's had a few bits and pieces done.
So talking about earlier, only by two 50 year old enthusiasts
and see what never thrushed or abused besides the odd spirit, a bit of driving.
Yeah, I just, just admit that you've driven it harder to Mitsubishi Evo.

So considering it's being tuned and everything, I'm just reading it there.
Yeah, it's 230 all wheel kilowatts, which is in an Evo ridiculously fast.

which are like really expensive.

You know, it's got, it's got a whole bunch of bits and pieces on it.
It's probably, you know, guys is the best car they've owned.
I don't know why you'd be selling it if it is.
But yeah, for me, this is 46 grand under 50 or thereabouts.

the hanging smelly things, it was still, it just,
it just out smelled all of those.
So horrific.

If you wanted a daily that'd be reliable and get the job done as a family car.

So what was the SX?

I think it was that one above because I've seen there's a, I think it was an ES as well,
which originally had hubcaps and stuff.
There's actually a five speed manual 380 on gun tree with like 89,000 K's for six.
But that's like properly budget spec.
So that was my first one for under five.

So for under 15, I chose 2004 Holgen Caprice.

He says with a minor remap, he does have the picture of how much power is putting out,
but it's kind of hard to make out what actually says please force of copy it strangely.
But yeah, it's got a gray leather interior, which I think probably suits exterior color
reasonably well.
It should also mean that if you've got some kids in the back,
that make a mess of the clean, the seats should be easy to clean.

Will you probably double the double, probably be closer to six with those things done.
But really tidy little wagon.
I really rate the V50s because they were a good size.
They came with the interior that's, you know, well, this one, this one's a T5.
So, it's got the silver highlights rather than the Ikea wood through it.
But leather interior.
But we like a Ballerot car.
They've usually sat on the highway and done fairly easy lives.
And coil packs are not too hard to sort.
Even though it's got that, that's the same motor out of the...
Except 5T.
5T, yeah, yeah.
So, I thought, well, that's an interesting, if your family's still small,
that would be a great little way to move around, I reckon.
And a can't-talk-top tip, if you're going to, like, own a T5 or something Volvo,
check around for prices for the Fords because you might get servicing parts a bit cheaper.
Like coil packs and things.
There's some good photos, actually, of the body, and it is straight as straight, that car.
And with 180Ks on it, I reckon that...
It defies understanding why people wouldn't actually just get the coil packs fixed and put it back on.
And then, you know, that might be a $6,500 car, you know, really.

A 2021 Mazda6 Sport wagon in a really lovely, again,
steel, blue sort of color.
Blue cars just work for me.

And it's funny how we've,
so many of us concentrated on wagons,
as far as, when you say family cars,
because they just make so much sense, don't they?
They do, absolutely.
It's got the lamies on it as well.

So now the last one up to $50,000,
my goodness, of all the things you could get.
How's this?
Oh, yeah.
A 2019 Toyota Alphard Executive Lounge Auto.
It's not a car.
It's an executive lounge.
I mean, look at it.
That's brilliant.
You've got to face only a mother could love,
especially that mother was a transformer.
But the interior is crazy.
It's like first class.
So you don't want to be driving this car.
You want to be sitting there in that back seat.
With your massaging and heating seats
and adjustable footrests.
Yeah, this is a step above business class, I reckon.
It's the one time where you'd say shotgun back seat.
That's right.
I was in Adelaide recently for the Magna thing for the weekend,
and I caught up with some friends from Melbourne,
and they have an Alphard.
Not one of these ones, an earlier one.
But they just love it.
It's just the first JDM sort of car.
But they just needed to be able to take grandchildren around and stuff.
And this thing's just, it's like a small apartment.
It's massive inside.
It's funny because on the outside,
they don't look super big when you drive near them,
but inside they're massive.
And once you put the local head unit in them with the first camera
and Apple CarPlay and everything,
they're absolutely as easy as anything.
But I have seen some of these on the road,
and Cass says, oh, those things look terrible.
I said, oh, yeah, shocking.
Shocking looking things.
But that's got executive lounge right now.
Come on.
It's all about the interior and those.
And it's a hybrid too.
You know, that's a lot of car for 50 grand.
There's a lot in there.
This one's got, how many has this got on the clock?
I can't remember.
Yeah, there were a lot of them that were dearer than that.
But how come we got that?
How come we didn't run one of those?
We rented a bloody Sienta.
That was a horrifically bad car.
I think the Alphard would have probably been
about three times of the Sienta cost.
I agree.

But I've seen a few of those on the road,
and time has not improved the way I feel about them.
Probably the least attractive Japanese import there is.
I wish we had got a pro box, actually.
I mean, pro boxes are just so cool.
Yeah.
Absolutely.

But see, for me, those Alphards,
it's not a very attractive name,
but it kind of reminds me of the car that the ban goes into.

That's the kind of car that they go into.
But no, I love the choices.
Gentlemen, I like all these choices, actually.
There's some good consumer advice for our listeners
who don't think we do much consumer advice on the show.
So no, we don't just talk about Magnus.
We also talk about other things.
And we'll give you some price points,
and I think there's something in there for everybody.
No one doubled up on models or anything.
We didn't both choose a certain Toyota Camry
or something like that.
They're all different.
Yeah, absolutely.
Tons to pick from.

Something cheap, if you need something cheap and cheerful.
Something expensive and loungy, if you know what I mean.
And it's something if you want to take the kids,
but also go through the track.
And I think that's a bit of fun for everybody there.
So all right, gentlemen, out of those cars,
what would be the two that you would honestly buy out of the list?
Do you have to buy two of them?
Oh, and the price was no object.

I mean, definitely they came out of.

I'd be tempted, actually, and I did look at them,
and at Jim's choice of the Skoda Octavia RS.
And I actually looked at a couple of superbs
because I really rate the superbs as well.
But I love that even though it's a veg product,
I mean, they've always had a better warranty in Australia
than the Volkswagen's.
I think Volkswagen's caught up now,
but early on they had a better warranty.
I don't know if it's just wishful thinking,
but they seem to have a more reliable reputation.
Agreed.
And it's like Sean in Scotland.

His Seat is basically a Golf R wagon,
but it's a manual and it's much more,
in a lot of ways, it's much more analog
and less electronic than the Golf R,
which probably contributes to it being more reliable.

So, yeah, now I'd go the Octavia.
And your other choice, David Prince?
Oh, my other choice?
Actually, I wish I'd have seen that 240 wagon.

It would be one of my picks because,

I'm just always drawn to something fast and grippy.

And it will make that kind of power easily,
reliable all day, every day.
I'm happy to service it and things like that.
And I would just chip away and probably add more power,
I would imagine,
because I would get sick of it and go,
it's too slow now.
So that would be that pick.
And then my other one is probably the,
I'm trying to think a little bit differently here.
So I'd probably go that Mazda6 wagon.
That's a very new car, very clean.
As you said,
it was probably just hailed damage or something anyway.
It doesn't say it was an accident.
So I think it'll be anything to be too concerned about.
And it will just keep on going.
I don't think it'll really age that much.
It'll always look like a new car.
A good looking car.

They've had a facelift,
but my God, it still looks good.
I saw one of the heritage edition ones recently in Dingley,
actually, of all places.
And yeah, quite like them because they come in their own,

the 20th anniversary edition comes in what they wrote.
Cherry color on the different color of the seats as well.
They're quite nice.
So they are my two picks for two very different reasons.

It wouldn't matter because it's cheap anyway.
You'd fit that single dad cheap car narrative quite well.
So low income single dad car, which is great.
So I think that's the way to do it.
