This is Autoline Daily, the show dedicated to enthusiasts of the global automotive industry.
As we reported yesterday, BYD nearly caught Tesla and pure electric sales in the third quarter, falling just thirty five hundred units Shy, But the Chinese automaker is also becoming one of the top automakers in the world in terms of overall sales. According to data from trend Force, BYD with the fourth best
selling brand globally in August, behind Toyota, Volkswagen, and Honda, respectively.
BYD took the fourth spot from Ford, which tumbled to six behind Hyundai because of sales drops in the US and Europe. BYD's global market share in
August was four point nine percent, just a tenth of a percent behind Honda.
Trend Force says BYD needs to speed up its overseas expansion if it wants to move high are on the list. Thanks to government EV mandates, global
battery production is expected to increase significantly by the end of the decade. According
to a study from ABI Research, global EV battery production is expected to increase nearly six times to two thousand, five hundred and eighty five gigawatt hours by twenty thirty. ABI says the growth will come from evolutionary improvements to lithium ion
battery production, like making it cheaper and easier to manufacture at scale. ABI
says that while solid state batteries receive a lot of attention, they won't make an impact this decade because they're too expensive and difficult to manufacture. Solid state
still requires changes in cell design and manufacturing, unlike lithium ion batteries. Volvo
is giving its small electric crossover the e X thirty and affordable starting price in the US. The automaker announced it will start at thirty six thousand, two
hundred and forty five dollars including destination charges. That's for a single motor model,
which has an EPA estimated two hundred and seventy five miles of range.
A twin motor model starts at about forty six thousand, two hundred dollars.
The EX thirty comes standard with Google built in, as well as a suite of advanced drivers safety technology. Deposit holders can start configuring their vehicle this fall,
and deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of next year.
And speaking of affordable electric crossovers. Tesla just reintroduced the entry level rear drive
version of the Model Y in the US and drop the starting price to forty five thousand, six hundred and thirty dollars including destination charges. But the model
also qualifies for the full seventy five hundred dollars EV tax credit, which means its price can go as low as thirty eight thousand dollars before any state incentives.
The model has a range of two hundred and sixty miles and can move from zero to sixty and six point six seconds. While Tesla hasn't revealed what
battery it's equipped with, it's speculated that it has an LFP or lithium iron phosphate pack, which helps keep the price low. Second life EV batteries could
become a booming business, especially for home energy storage. That's one of the
findings that came out of the SA's North American International Propulsion Conference. The second
life batteries could last as long as they did in an EV, would cost half as much to buy, maybe as little as thirty five dollars a kilowatt hour. The growth rate for second use batteries could be as much as sixteen
percent compounded. Annually, twenty five to thirty percent of IC engines are pulled
from scrapped cars and sold, and the same could happen for batteries. The
Japan Mobility Show kicks off at the end of the month and Nissan is using it as an opportunity to reveal a new family of futuristic evs. They all
will feature Hyper in their name, and the first is the hyper urban crossover concept. With concepts that are this far out there, I like to look
at lighting signatures, proportions, and silhouettes. Those are the most likely things
to carry over into production. I also think Nissan could keep the two tone
look at the rear. The Hyper concepts feature bidirectional charging and are meant for
long term ownership with updates to both the software and hardware. For example,
Nissan says the interior could be refreshed with the new instrument panel. I'll be
interested to see the other vehicle segments that Nissan uses for its remaining Hyper concepts, because I think we'll see it follow the same with its production evs.
Small, big or really big truck owners love to customize their vehicles. That
makes even more sense for big rig drivers who can practically live in their trucks and Mercedes Benz Custom Tailored Trucks, which is a department of Mercedes Benz Trucks and does special conversions. Just finished it's three hundred thousand custom truck. On
top of the custom made parts it's developed in its twenty plus years, Custom Tailored Trucks will also install additional axles, adapt wheelbases, and install crew cabs with more seating. It has the future in its mind as well. It's
now working on a so called low liner version of the all electric Eactros three hundred, which can be used with megatrailers in in Automotive logistics, I admit I was a little shocked to see how many trucks Mercedes has customized right from the factory. I wonder if it even customizes more vehicles than Bentley or Rolls
Royce. But that brings us to the end of today show. Thanks for

About this episode
BYD has risen to become the fourth best-selling global automotive brand, closely trailing giants like Toyota and Volkswagen, driven by strong EV sales. Tesla reintroduced an affordable Model Y variant in the US, benefiting from tax credits and likely using cost-effective LFP batteries. Global EV battery production is projected to increase sixfold by 2030, mainly through lithium-ion improvements, while solid-state batteries remain a longer-term prospect. Nissan plans to unveil futuristic Hyper EV concepts at the Japan Mobility Show, emphasizing software updates and bidirectional charging. Mercedes-Benz continues expanding its custom truck offerings, including electric models for logistics.
