LIVE
Welcome to another in-wheel time podcast. Give them the show open. Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh.
Jeff will have the cruise in an events calendar. Yes, I will. And we'll bring you stories making automotive news headlines this week. I'm doing this because you can't hear us all the time.
What are you doing down there? Jerk, go. You don't want after it.
Howdy. We always need more Jeff's seeking. Yeah, I'm all tangled up. Number one's in zero's master engineer, David Ainson. This is all your fault. And Jeff's seeking. I'm Don Armstrong. And that other person walking across the parking lot. I'm going to have him arrested. I know their police here this morning. And he's going to go to the in-wheel time jail.
Uh-oh. You know, and here's the way that the morning is going. It took us two hours to set up this morning, which is ridiculous. And here's a wire that has a hole in the end of something in there. I don't know.
Here, touch it to your tongue. He's like the nine volt. Yeah, see this here and hold this paper clip. You know, this was a car show. It's not anymore. Now we're science. We are. We're going to be a science show. Electrical. What is that? We're talking about science. Yeah. Who did that? Was that Devo? No. No. I don't know. No, no, it wasn't. Science. Science. Science.
Science. I could actually do that. But I can also do. You can dance too. I can dance. He can dance. Biff condense and Biff is our. What are you doing here today? Are you in charge of something? He is in charge. He's sleeping, sweeping, sweeping, clowning. Whatever the case may be. He is the trophy guru. Thomas Dolby. It's science. She blinded me with science.
Thomas Dolby. He doesn't even know who we're talking about. How do you? How do you? How do you?
Fifteen. You know about that song. She blinded me by science. See now. There's homework for the weekend. Your dad's going to put it up on a computer for you. And he's going to go listen to this. She blinded me by science.
Okay. Just say it. I want to add to that there. When you bring in a toy, you get breakfast taco. Yeah. Your two breakfast tacos in a soda. If you bring in a toy. So that's it. It's a good bargain there. Well, that's good.
Unwrapped. And that guy right there. He's supposed to be sitting over here at the end. Yeah. And I told him. Yeah. Would you please tell that guy? This time is up and he needs to get his butt over here. Come on.
He's over there talking to everybody. You know, you know, as you think he is. I know exactly. Go ahead and put that on it. So yeah, keep the mic close to your.
So before this is the toys for Todd's guy, but we're going to talk about that in a minute. But first of all, what is your name? My name is Dano. Dano.
All right, canals. Welcome. Welcome, man. I didn't want to go there. I'm Donald.
Donald. Okay. How is my gear? Donald Duck, right? Yes. How's the island? How's my
Garrett? Good. Good. Good. Good. Good. Making a lot of rest this year. So,
what is your last name? It's Olorthigi. Nevermind. That's why they call me
Dano. You didn't know that? Exactly. No, I didn't know. Everybody knows that.
I think it's the first time we've been. No, why? Have you been, have you been
stand shows? Absolutely. Yeah. I met you last year, but we didn't really talk
about this. I was here. Yeah. You know what? I was because I've had too many of
these. That's probably right. Today's not about you. I hear you.
Too many last time. Not enough today. Olorthigi. Olorthigi.
You got a word on. Olorthigi. There you go. Olorthigi. Olorthigi.
Olorthigi. Olorthigi. Olorthigi. Coordinator, region five,
choice for Todd's Marine Corps Reserve. Okay. We're just going to call you Dano
Jones. Of course, yes. That's good enough. Yeah. Well, hey, man, thanks for what you
do. Thank you. So, you obviously you don't, you're you volunteer for
choice for Todd's. Absolutely. Well, you were marine. Navy and marine. There you go.
When the games today, aren't they one of the same? Because they are. Well,
because I don't, don't even go there. Okay. Our baby game is today. Thank you.
Yes. Yeah. And that's the only time the Marines will say and be honored by the
Navy. Yeah. But they are department of the Navy. Right. But they don't like it.
They say, well, where the men's department? What? That's good. I'm so Dano.
Yes. I want to know about your car. It was. And I was told that you got a collection.
I do. I had five at once. But I got buses and you know what a single cab is?
A single cab. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. The team was the front. What the truck. Yeah.
I gave it to my son. My son. You did for a little bit. Then he joined the Navy. Just like me.
This year. So he got really awesome. San Diego. No, he had to watch it in DC right now for two
year contract. Yes. That's you. Yeah. Yeah. You have to be hand picked. Hey, he was the only one out
of his unit. One of the requirements that you got to be six foot tall. I'm 5-11. He's six
two at 18. So they picked him out and he's serving two years up. Congratulations. I got to be
proud. Oh, very. We see him. He's coming home the 19th. Very nice. I like it. Yeah. All right.
So let's talk about your bus. All right. This is one of them. One of them. Okay. And so why did
you bring this one? What year is this? This one is a 74. It's a Brazilian. It's a Brazilian.
The only difference. You know, I've heard about Brazilian. I didn't know that they formed for
collector. They kind of found on them. What? Everybody likes the German ones. Those are worth more.
That's why they did they. Yeah, but the Brazilians are more fun. Yes. They are affordable. They're
affordable. Now do they do they transform over the years and keep up with the time to how does that
work? They do. They do. If everybody knows in Germany, they stop production and they will
continue in them in Mexico and Brazil. They kept doing it. So the 74 looks like a 64
because they kept making them and there's a shot right now on the screen if you watch
yourself. And this one's a 74. My other one's a 64. That's a true German. That's the one I
drive on weekends. So when was the first year that they made those? I want to say 48. Really?
Really? And a lot of people don't like to say it, but it was Hitler. Yeah. That basically
started it in people's wagon. Yeah. One of the people's cars. That's what most wagons start
in people's. Yeah. Well, if we ever want to thank him for anything, he started that.
Him and Fortinan Porsche. Yes. Yes. Yes. And you know,
I'm of that era. And I truly appreciate back in the day, dude, it's like, are you kidding me?
I know. That's a mob bus. Nobody drives that. You could put a Brazilian people in there.
Smoking jack. It's smoking sweaters. It's like we're trying to do all those toys today. Yeah.
Yeah. Well, that is that is very cool. And you know, you know, to me, what really sets it off,
don't laugh. The curtains. Yeah. That's why I put them on my other one. Yeah. For photographers.
So love that. So I'm not I'm not beside. No, I'm not out of the ordinary. Because
I don't know. Could you could you get them with that from the dealership? Do you know?
I don't even know where they go. It's probably but it's an op. Yeah. It's obviously an op. Yeah.
Well, in that year, didn't they also make the pop up 10th thing? The campers was serious.
Yeah. Yes, sir. And that's where the curtains came in because you could sleep in,
because they were the kitchen too. Wait. Exactly. You don't want the sunlight coming in. So they draw
the curtain, right? And they did the camp out and they slept on them. Yeah. People made road trips.
Yeah. And see that. So I remembered that. Okay. And it was still the same nerd group.
But they the only difference is instead of going to the racetrack or car clubs, they would go camping.
Exactly. And listen, there's something to be said for that. Not I love it. I think it's great.
That's why they have a lot of the Volkswagen shows our campouts. They have a three day show.
Seriously. Camp out. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Have you originally from California? So I mean, oh, my God. Yeah. Aren't you glad you're not there anymore?
Yes, I am. Thank God. Yeah. I moved my family out here five years ago and it's the best thing we ever done.
Oh, welcome. You got to meet us. Yes. There you go. Any around a worldwide broadcast.
Did you know that? Yes. I heard five million people. I know. We're even broadcast in Brazil.
Yes. Yeah. And we get all shaved up for that. Just saying.
What? I actually got the razor out this morning. I don't normally don't do it. Shut up.
Anyway, he brought his epilepsy out. Look out, ladies.
That's it. Okay. So does it? The buses have a different engine, a little bit more cubic inches
than the regular cars? The original one was a 1,500 CC. It pushes about 34 horsepower.
There's a 1,600 in here, so you're looking at maybe 42 horsepower. So did that come stock with it or
as it does? It did. So it's really bumped it up a little bit. A little bit. Why did they do that?
Why do they spend all that time and energy doing that? I don't know. The interstate driving.
That's why instead of stopping, oh, see, I did the freeway fires on there and you didn't even think of it.
Yeah. Yeah. But that makes sense. Yeah. Okay. So have you done any work to it?
On this one, no. This one was a turnkey. And basically it's going back to California because it's
sold already. This one sold. But by the other one, I keep it garage. It's a Caribbean queen. I just
did a Autorama down to the George Arbor. A Caribbean queen. Got first place. Really?
Yes, sir. It's a Caribbean queen, Mars. You know about that. Mars is the Caribbean queen.
From Brazil. From Brazil. All right. So how long have you had this one?
This particular one I've had for a year and a half. My other one I've had for eight years.
Are they really expensive now? Nowadays, if you find them in that pristine, yes.
That's that is that all original? This is all original. And the thing is if you bought it,
basically what they call a rust bucket. If you pick up a rust bucket anywhere from 10 to 20 grand
on a Brazilian. But but dude, but then you've got to spend all of that time. That's
money. Exactly. That's why you want to buy a turnkey one. But I mean, I put all the work in my other
one. Was that was that this one? Did you buy it? Did you buy this from in California? No, this one
was shipped from Brazil. Would you go down there and see it? A partner of mine find California. That's
what he does. He imports them. South of California. We bought we bring them to Texas to get the
tide of those on them and see if they, you know, people like them or not. So what do you mean? What if
they like them or not? Really? A lot of people, well, they again, when you picture a bus,
you're picturing money. Brazilians are your alternatives. So it's affordable. So you can buy
this anywhere from 30 to 50, but a German would be 50 to 200 grand. Really? And that's again,
is that your business? Do you do that? I'm retired. So it's my friend does help them out.
For the military, 22 years of military and 10 years of the nurse. Very good. Are you in RN?
I was in LVN. LVN? Yes. Now, we talked about car collections and that's perfect to start a
car collection. Yes, you've got five. So we just did a feature on the car, starting a car collection.
Right. And we talked about, you know, originals. We talked about stories. We know people that have
own collections and major ones. Stan has a huge car collection. You probably know about that.
But his is all over the place. And you've got to appreciate that. Oh, yeah. I like that one.
I'm going to buy that one. Okay. This is not that one, but I like that one too. And I'm going to buy
that one. Right. And as time goes on, one leads to another leads to another leads to another.
That part of it doesn't change. Neither is the part where you need a wife.
You have all the girls with you now. They're your girlfriends. She said this is my second wife.
This one here. Yes. So where do you store the other ones in my garage?
So you got to like a five car garage? Three car. Three car. Yeah. And that works.
Yeah. Our personal cars stay out. We keep these in the garage. Good for you. Yeah. Yeah.
I totally get that. Yeah. Yeah. The funny thing is when I moved out here, I wanted to bring
basically not the California, but the West Coast vibe of Volkswagen. Sure.
We started out with seven of us in the club. I started the club. Yeah.
Funken grooving vintage Volkswagen club here in Houston. We started out with seven members.
Today we have seven hundred and ninety nine. Wow. Shut up. Nope.
You did not. Wow. And we just got a new one. Well, number 800 is out here right now.
Yeah. You did that red one. Yeah. You just joined us today. I love it. So let's take a couple of
seconds to talk about toys for talks today. Absolutely. So this is a big drop off zone and
bring an unwrapped toy. Drop it in the box. There's a man right there. It's got some tickets.
He's going to give you a ticket. You get two tacos in a soda for free. Absolutely. So it's well worth
it. And you know, I told my daughter I said, come because it's every kind of car. I have a three
year old grandson. Okay. He is all into anything that was wheels on it. And and told him I said,
he will love this. And we've got we've got the kitty cars. We've got cars that he has little
bitty cars of your bus. Okay. Cars. You know, nice. And so this is the time right now to come out,
join the cars, bring the grandkids, bring the kids, whatever it is, see all the real life
cars and then see the car collection, the pedal car. Yeah. So let's talk about toys for
tots. How long have you been with toys for tots? 28 years. Really? Really? Longer with toys for
tots than you were in the service. Get out of this. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. And you know, everybody
relates this to a once a year event, but it is, but it's not. It's a full time job for me.
Yeah. I'm a volunteer. I don't get paid to do this and it's year round and you're doing it because
you enjoy it because I love seeing the kids faces on Christmas, getting that one toy that they
would never give in. Some kids don't get any toys. And you know, it's not just the little ones.
There's teens. There's preteens that also need people to think about them. People don't think
about the team. Exactly. Or the special needs case. Exactly. You know, you even know a parallel.
Yes. And you're some foundations and socks and things. And you guys do all of that.
Absolutely. My wife and I just finished up. Writer donated a 27 foot truck boxed up to us.
We did all these pickups all over our area. We filled up the truck three times yesterday. Wow.
Drop that off. And then we had a toy. So I don't know the toy. Right. It leaves here. Where does it go?
It goes to our warehouse. Where's the warehouse in Tumball? Right. We collect it. The nonprofits
already registered families that they eligible. Make sure that they're eligible, that they have kids.
What happened? So they applied to toys retouched. We come eligible. We start October 1st.
And then we go to our whoever people we have as capacity. We had to close it November 30th.
We had so many kids come up. You know, just their families were asking for them. Oh my god.
So it was my heart. We cleaned them out. They cleaned out our warehouse last night.
So this right here is a bonus. A new start. We're still going. We're still going in the process.
And you got time. There's so many kids out there. But not just here. And as this ends,
it's not the end of everything. No. There's still opportunity for folks to donate to us.
Absolutely. Through your organization and through others, I'm sure. So there's over 843 coordinators
contribute, contribute. That warms my heart. Yeah. So after today, what are you going to do?
Well, I'm taking this home. My wife's counting them. Then we put a ticket to the warehouse.
So is that what you do? You count the toys. We have to count each one of them.
And then my volunteers take the toys and separate them by age, male, female, age,
unit sex, and then by ages. Then we set the tables up and then we bag them for the non-profit and
for the individual families that registered. Hey, I have a son. He's five years old. He likes hot
wheels. Boom. That's what we do. But hot wheels and we try to accommodate every kid. Exactly.
Exactly. That's so awesome. Well, you're an awesome guy.
Dano. Thank you. Dano. It's a pleasure to meet you.
Real honored actually. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you for your service. Thank you. Thank you.
We appreciate you. Absolutely. Thank you. All right. We're going to take a quick break here at the
Inwheel time car talk show and tail pipes and tacos. I know. Well, you come on bars.
You just need to calm down. This guy here, we should get he gets it from me.
Get him some tequila. Give him something. He needs something. You know what he needs?
A Brazilian. A Brazilian. And you you have a Brazilian.
He's got you got a Brazilian right there. Mars.

You're going to leave me with that. I'm going to leave you with that. And of course there's
car shows or donations. You can't just leave me with that. I'm saving that. What? It's all yours.
No, it's not all mine. I'm not going to take blame for. I've taken blame for everything
this past month. And I'm going to take it. Don't do it. But in the meantime and in between time,
I'm proud to report this story, date line, Durham, North Carolina, demand for electric vehicles
as slow dramatically. Federal tax incentives have been canceled. Grandios, EV ambitions are being
postponed or scaled back. It's in this moment that eight of the world's largest car makers are
hitting the accelerator on their joint effort to build a nationwide network of convenient,
reliable EV chargers, rivaling testless. That's what I want to put my money into. More
unusable charging station. Yep. There you go. You know, they're building a big launch pad,
I guess, of EV chargers over at the airport, Sugarland Airport. I own the startup.
Those companies formed as shooting for 30,000 charging bays across North America by the end of 2030.
It stations branded as rechargery. We'll give EV drivers easy access to grocery stores, coffee shops,
restaurants, and other amenities, along with the confidence that they won't get stranded on a road trip
with a dead battery. Why not? Iona. And it's founding automakers, BMW General Motors, Honda,
Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Talantis, and Toyota, all of which invested in equal undisclosed
amount of money, say they want to build the nation's best charging network, even if not necessarily
the largest. Some point to Tesla super chargers has the standard to meet or exceed. I have a story
about that, true experience. So I received a car to drive. It was an all-electric and it didn't have
the usual plug. Can I get plug into the house to charge the car ever all slow that is,
but it gives me something. Now, we're not going to supply you with that, but we're going to supply you
because the car has now this particular Kia has a Tesla plug. So there's a difference between
the next plug and the Tesla plug, different configurations. So they've got a turn around.
What do you want to call it? An adapter. Go try to find a Tesla charger that isn't full of
Tesla's or broken. Or the Tesla chargers at the Tesla store down the street from me.
Oh yeah. Tell me about that. Unusable. Unusable because you have to have authorization to use the
15 chargers that they've got there. Incredible. There you go with that. Try color. Remember that
store? Oh yeah. It just ended. Well, kind of. Yeah, but there's more. I'm going to have to do that
the next hour. Okay. Are you ready for a commercial? Or do we even try? Do we even bother?
Let's go for it. I'm in. Mars, I didn't hear your voice. Well, you're doing a commercial. I'm
going to get a cup of coffee. I'm ready now. Don't get coffee. Get a drink. You need one. They've
got them in there. Come on out to the tailpipes and tacos. Car talk show. Here within Wheel
Tone. Yep. This morning. There's lots of cars here. It's in Christmas edition. Blood is full. Yeah,
much full. And there are a lot of people here. Yeah. And it's cleared up nice. The weather is
turning nice. Oh, it's going to rain. We heard it. It's coming. Locus. Oh my goodness. We invite you
to come on out. We'll be here until 11 a.m. Houston time synchronize our watches. Do you have that?

About this episode
The episode features a lively discussion about Brazilian VW buses, with guest Dano sharing insights from his collection and experiences. The hosts engage in humorous banter while exploring the differences between Brazilian and German models, their history, and the joy of owning these classic vehicles. Dano also highlights his involvement with Toys for Tots, emphasizing the importance of community service during the holiday season. The episode blends automotive passion with charitable efforts, making for an entertaining and informative listen.
The cables were messy, the mics were hot, and the parking lot was already full when we sat down with Dano—Navy and Marine veteran, Region 5 Toys for Tots coordinator, and proud VW bus owner. What followed was a lively ride through car culture, community, and the nuts-and-bolts work that turns one toy into a holiday morning breakthrough.
Dano rolls up in a 1974 Brazilian VW bus, a perfect entry point into a world where affordable classics still exist and weekend campouts feel like time travel. We dig into the differences between Brazilian and German buses, why a turnkey 30–50K bus beats a “rust bucket” restoration for most people, and how a modest 42 horsepower can carry a family farther than a spec sheet suggests. From curtains and pop-top campers to a prize-winning garage queen, Dano’s stories capture why these quirky machines keep gathering people around them. He even shares how a Houston VW club grew from seven members to nearly 800 by staying welcoming and driving often.
Then we switch gears to the mission: 28 years of Toys for Tots service, year-round. Dano breaks down the real logistics—unwrapped toys go to a Tomball warehouse, every item is counted, sorted by age and need, then bagged for registered nonprofits and families. Teens and kids with special needs are included, as are practical items like clothing and socks. A donated 27-foot truck was filled three times in a day because the need is that big. It’s not a seasonal gesture; it’s a supply chain for joy.
We also run through the week’s best cruise-ins, from Cypress to Clear Lake, and share frank thoughts on EV charging: adapters, access headaches, and why reliability matters. Whether you speak in volts or carburetors, the goal is the same—keep people moving and make the journey feel good.
