The Jeep Wrangler is a type of SUV that people like to use for driving on rough trails and in nature. It looks boxy and you can take off the doors and roof.
A maintenance schedule is a plan that tells you when to check and fix parts of your car so it stays in good shape and doesn't cost a lot to repair later.
Write offs mean you can subtract the money you spend on things like tools from your taxes, so you pay less. But for car mechanics, you usually can't do this unless you own your own shop.
A full blown filled up toolbox means a big box with all the tools a car mechanic needs to do their job. It's like getting everything you need to start fixing cars.
Corrosion is when metal parts of a car start to break down and get rusty because of water, salt, or chemicals. This can make the car weaker and cause problems if not taken care of.
Rust protection means putting special stuff on your car to stop it from getting rusty. This helps your car last a long time, especially if you drive where roads get salty in winter.
The Honda CR-V is a small SUV that many people use for family trips and everyday driving. The 1998 version is an older model but still well-liked for being dependable and easy to use.
The Nissan 200 SX is a small, sporty car that people like because it's fun to drive and easy to change or fix up. It’s often used by people who enjoy making their cars faster or cooler. It might come up in the podcast because someone is talking about using it as a base to build or improve a car.
The Toyota FJ is a type of SUV made by Toyota that is good for driving on rough roads and has a cool, old-school look. People like it because it lasts a long time and is strong.
The FJ Cruiser is a type of SUV made by Toyota that is good for driving off-road and has a cool, old-school look. People like it because it lasts a long time and can handle rough terrain.
Preventative maintenance means taking care of your car regularly so it doesn't break down or need expensive repairs. It's like checking things early to keep your car running well.
LIVE
Good morning folks! You're tuned to Car Connection where the coffee's strong, the
stories are real, and the wrenches never stop turning. I'm your host, Nile Motor
Mount Jenkins, coming to you from the Car Connection workshop where the smell of
fresh oil, a little elbow grease, is all part of a balanced breakfast. Around here
we don't just talk cars, we live them. Whether it's a 25 year old Jeep Wrangler
getting a second chance at life or a Nissan Rogue getting its brakes back in
order, or a mystery leak that's got everyone scratching their heads. This is
where we roll up our sleeves, get it done with a little wit, a little wisdom, and a
whole lot of fun. The Car Connection isn't just about nuts and bolts and
diagnostics, it's about connection. Connection to your vehicles, to the people
who drive them, and to the community that keeps Niagara rolling. Because when you
fix a car, you're not just turning a wrench, you're restoring someone's
confidence, freedom, and maybe even their sanity. We're here every week, Monday
through Saturday, with the motormouth morning drive helping you keep your ride
safe, reliable, and ready for whatever road lies ahead. So whether you're a
weekend wrencher, a daily commuter, or someone who just wants to understand what
that strange rattle really means. Welcome aboard, stick around for some shop
talk, expert advice, a few good laughs, and maybe a flashback that brings on a
story or two. Well, welcome to Saturday, and thank you for allowing me into
your world, and I allow you into my world, where you will need months and months
of intense therapy and counseling, because you'll probably never be the same.
We made it to the weekend. Yippee! Exactly, and if you're working the weekend,
I worked weekends for 31 years. Exactly, and here I am. I'm working again. It's
just the way it is. I don't like to miss anything. I'm up at 4 a.m. Checking,
making sure that everything is as it should be, outside and around, and
checking on the neighbors. What was the name of that lady? Well, yeah. Yeah, I
remember. Mrs. Kravitz. How many of you remember Mrs. Kravitz? Yeah, put that in
the comments section. Send me an email. Tell me how you remember her. Who is
Mrs. Kravitz? Yeah, I'm dating myself, but that's okay. That's okay. I'm about as
old as a worm, but not as old as dirt. So welcome to Saturday morning. It is the
motormouth morning drive, and yes, we have made it to the weekend. I think first
and foremost, the best thing we can take care of is having our morning coffee
together, that morning swiggy. So whatever your coffee is, it's okay with us. Just
don't say the words decaf. That is a colorful metaphor in the car connection
workshop. It's not allowed. Turkey bacon, not allowed. Spam, no. If you do eat
spam, tell us how you eat spam. I do have some American friends. They eat like
quarter pound spam burgers. They like slice this stuff up and make like a
burger out of it. I gotta tell you, I have tried it to say I tried it. It isn't
bad. It isn't bad, but my deep concern is, what is spam exactly? Yeah, what is
that kind of gel that's in the can? You know, as you shake it out of there, it's
kind of like onto the cutting board. It's like, does anybody really know what
that is? I don't know. That's the part that creeps me out. If I didn't see that,
I probably, I would do a quarter pound spam burger because it was really good
with onions and cheese and sauteed mushrooms and all the works on there.
It was really good, but it's that whatever that is, it's in the can with it. That
just does it for me. It grosses me out. So anyways, let's move on this morning.
Let's have our morning coffee being brought to us by Earl and Louise Grant,
our car guys, husband and wife team for 25 plus years at City Auto Sales and
Leasing, Greater Toronto Areas, Pre-Own, Pre-Own. Premier, Pre-Own, say that 10
times. The GTA's Greater Toronto Areas, Premier, Pre-Own, Auto Store. Apparently,
I can't do that on Saturdays, only Monday through Friday. Yeah, low mileage quality
vehicles at fair prices. Earl and Louise do not sell any junk. They will not let you
go out their door car broke. They'll have a little chitty chat with you. They have
in-house leasing and financing available for you. They do carry a really good
inventory in-house under roof and outside on the lot. There's something specific
you're looking for. Speak up. Let them know because they have the resources to find
that vehicle for you. And I'll tell you, Earl is picky. And so is Louise. Their
vehicles look like brand spanking new and we're really blessed to have them with
us because I'll tell you what, that is an area in the auto service and repair
industry that is tough. Yeah, pre-owned automobiles. They're either, you know,
some places are like, all their cars has like lipstick on a pig, skunk and a
mink coat. When you get at home, it's going to eat you alive. That will not happen at
city auto sales and leasing. Buy with confidence. Be treated with nothing less
than honesty and integrity. And today's car connection workshop brought to you by our
certified financial planning professionals, Tony Miele and Larry Tietro. I'm hoping to
have them on as guests. We're working that out. Being totally digital now, I've been
used to having guests on the air with me for 31 years on radio. And since we switched over
to digitals, I've learned as much as I possibly can without blowing my last gray brain cell right
out my ear. We have the capability of doing that. I just have to wait for my friend Tyrone,
who's lounging around in the Florida Keys. He'll be back beginning of April. He can teach me how
to bring guests on. I'd really like for you to meet my brothers from other mothers, Tony Miele
and Larry Tietro. 50 years experience as fiduciaries. They are my personal financial planners.
And I'll tell you, I have had some pretty tough rows to hoe and these fellas have walked me right
through it. So no matter what your circumstances are financially, whether you're toting way too much
debt, you've got an investment portfolio at the bank. You have got to rescue it out of there. You're
not making any money. They're making more money and you're getting pittance. That can change. And
the fellas can change that in a heartbeat for you. So let them have a look and see what's going on.
Estate planning, powers of attorney, health proxies, you got to have that all in there if you have
kids living at home. And you know, they're small humans, mid-sized humans, and then there's adult
humans. So the youth, if you have youth living at home, 18 years or older, you need to make sure
that you are their health proxy. Do you have that put together? So if something should happen to them
the health wise, if you're not their health proxy, you can't give the doctors instructions. Did you
know that? Well, now you do. You need to get an estate plan done properly and locked down tight.
It's not a cake mix in a box. It's not I got it done for 20 bucks. Yeah, good luck with that one.
CRA will be waiting for you at the other end when stuff goes on. Mortgages, best mortgage
people to deal with in my entire life. Let me tell you, I'll never, ever go back to the bank for a
mortgage. Fantastic rates. Their mortgage department makes everything easy, peasy, and they treat you
like a human. I love that. And more, life insurance, critical illness insurance, grab that discovery
meeting we call an hour in a coffee, sit down and learn how to put money aside to fix your car
on a regular basis, have a budget, how to budget for the next vehicle so that it's already bought
and paid for before you arrive at that decision and get everything sorted out. Grab that hour in a
coffee. You can do by zoom, phone, in person, at the boardroom at IG wealth management,
wherever you're comfortable with coffee shop. But here's the thing, don't waste their time. They
don't really need any more clients. They got 50 plus years in combined. But they've jumped in with
me back in 2007 to help our listeners to get the right answers instead of listening to someone who
really doesn't know what they're talking about, but they have all the answers to everything. Do you
know anybody like that? Ding, ding, ding. Sit down with either Tony or Larry Tietro and get your
questions answered by those who have the fruit on the tree. This is huge. Finances are huge.
That's the biggest area in households with husbands and wives where there's intense moments of
fellowship happening all the time and that can stop. When you have a plan, it'll all come together.
All is not lost. You need to talk to Tony or to Larry and sit down and get that one hour
discovery meeting. Leave your wallets at home. There's no sales pitch, no condemnation, just to
sit. They're going to, you're going to do more talking and they're going to be doing most pretty
all of the listening. They need to see where you're at, what's of concern, and then they'll
formulate a plan for you. But please don't waste their time if you're really not interested.
Do me that favor, right? But I'll tell you right now, everything I just talked about, I have all
arranged with Tony and Larry. So if I go to my great reward tonight when I'm sleeping, I've left no one
in a mess and you should do the same. And if you feel like the whole world's coming down on you,
get that one hour and a coffee and you'll see. You will see what I just told you is right
and it's right on. You'll come away from that meeting going, oh man, I feel so much lighter
that things are going to get organized in the area where most people don't like to talk about it.
So let's jump in, have our morning coffee, our topic today. It's a hot one and I'm here for a whole
hour. So here's the rule for Saturday. Here's how it works. We have Fun Friday and we had a great
topic yesterday. We were poking at those who have minivans in a nice way, in a very nice way. Now,
can you look stellar behind the wheel of a minivan? If you, hey, if you've got some ideas
or some things that you do to look stellar behind the wheel of your minivan, hey, shoot me an email
now at ccbusnet.com. You can also send me an email right through our website, which is the
biggest toolbox in our toolbox, the biggest drawer in our toolbox. Yeah, that's right,
the homepage, everything's there for you. All the logos you want to connect with Tony,
Miele and Larry Teatro, click on their logo, open their profile page and meet them. And that goes
for all our program partners. We're grateful to have them with us. They've come along for the ride
switching from broadcasting on radio networks over to full time here, six days a week instead of one
day a week, every Saturday for an hour, where I'm on Monday through Saturday pretty much for about
35, 42, 58 minutes. It all depends on how the topic's going. And then we've got Fun Friday now.
So we pick a topic, we toss it around, and you can jump in on the conversation.
Saturdays, Q&A, that's what it is. Saturday is Q&A. If you have a question,
automotive related question, anything outside of that, the answer is 28.
You email me a question ahead of time so I can read it, and I'll read it on the air, and I'll
cover it on Saturday morning. So that's gonna be our Q&A. We will eventually go live streaming on
YouTube and Facebook, but just not yet. I got a lot on my plate right now, some projects on the
goal, we're switching a bunch of stuff up. Today's episode is number 99. Wayne Gretzky, the man with
the puck. You know, I went for a wine test tasting at the first Gretzky winery that opened in Niagara,
Niagara Lake. It was phenomenal. I was invited through Audi, and I used to work for Volkswagen
at one time. I love my Voxy still. I can't help it. But anyways, I like my European cars,
certain ones. There's some I, you know what, no. And no, plus no. It was a great time. We had cheese,
and I got chacouterie. I didn't even know what that meant at the time. And great wine tasting,
and it was like in the middle of the winter. And the ponds out back were not quite frozen,
but they had an Audi at that time. It was the introduction of the Audi Q5, I believe it was.
Yeah, Q5. It was a great night. Anyways, number 99. Our episode that you're tuned into right now
is number 99. Come Monday, we'll be celebrating not only a new month, month of March, will it come
in like a lion or a lamb? I've been looking, I already know. Hang on to your gotchies because it
could be a rough one. You know what, we might as well get it overdone with that's what I'm saying.
Okay, come in like a lion. Give it to us. Come on. Come on. Is that all you got? You know, like,
who was it? George Foreman would say to Cassius Clay, Muhammad Ali. Is that, no,
other way around. He would say to George Foreman, is that all you got, George? Is that all you got?
And then George would clobber him. Yeah. Anyways, I digress. So Monday, it's huge. Huge for us.
This is huge. 100 lessons in vehicle ownership that they never told you was posted on our podcast
channel, iHeartRadio, all the major platforms, Apple, Spotify, Amazon, and any podcast
Dewey out there, Dewey thingy, you can just type in the search bar. That's technical language.
Type in the search bar, car connection workshop. We're there. We're there for you.
On the homepage or website, all the links are up there as well. Top right hand corner,
YouTube. 93% of you are enjoying the videos, but you're not subscribed. Here we're battling,
Skippy and I, we're battling the scrounge up coffee money. We haven't gotten to the point where
we're popping back seats looking for change yet, but it could happen. It could happen.
Yeah, we need the funds and we need to get monetized. We got to have 1000 subs. We're not
even at 500 yet. Can you give us a push? Can you get the subscription booster cables out?
And don't be one of those 93% that are watching the videos and I know you like them.
You got to help us. Here's how you do it. You subscribe, you comment on the video,
you know, make it, even if it's like too much to say, Hey,
and an exclamation point or something like yo, or great video, nice job, way to go,
motor mouth, Skippy, put a comment in there. All those little things I just mentioned,
subscribe, like, share, follow, comment is what the algorithms gods are looking for
to push us forward. So we have almost 200 teaching videos on our YouTube channel. We
have a lot of fun. Skippy really catches me in some really unique positions at times and I know,
I know she's enjoying it because she's usually laughing her head off behind a camera
at me. Did I say, are you laughing at me? No, I'm laughing with you, with you,
motor mouth. It's okay. Take it easy. So we need you to do that stuff so we can keep the ignition
turned on and running on all eight cylinders smoothly. All right, we don't need any misfiring.
So we got to get the 4000 viewing hours. So just leave the thing playing. Clock the minutes,
the hours, help us get there. We love you for it in advance. Skippy and I thank you so much for
those of you who are subscribed and that you're making the, I'm making you feel guilty enough to
get it done because 93% of you are not subscribed. So that means if you did subscribe and you will
subscribe today or tomorrow or in the next five minutes, that'll push us forward. And our whole
idea behind our YouTube channel folks is to be able to look after the widows, the orphans, the
seniors, the single moms that are busting butt out there raising a couple of kids working about 10
and a half jobs to try and make a living. And to those we find that, you know, people whisper to
us and say, Hey, they're going through a pretty tough time right now. And we want to be able to
fix their cars, pay for the parts, take off, you know, take hold of the labor and shoot a video
that can be a teaching tool for you who are launched into our subscription list,
launched in there. That means you're in, you're all in. And that will help us get there. That'll
help us to reach our vision for being able to do that, pay for the parts, look after the labor,
shoot some videos, get them up on our YouTube channel, help you guys learn the basic fundamentals
of vehicle ownership and maintenance. And you can do it whenever age group you are. We just,
it's Saturday morning. And yesterday, Friday evening, early evening, 430, our fleet maintenance
video went up where I'm breaking out our car connection maintenance schedule kit for you to
show you how simple it is to go from getting a $5,000 repair bill on your car when it could have
cost you 200. And I've been doing that for years. I've been following my maintenance schedule list
for ever. In fact, I've most of it memorized in my head, believe it or not. And it'll save you a
lot of money. So come Monday. So if you can help us with that, all the links are there too for
Facebook, Instagram, Stevensville on the web, Skippy created that, that local website has over 7,000
viewers. And they she put up a profile page for car connection there, just click on the
businesses tab. That's where she posts some wacky stuff, reels and bloopers and stuff like that.
They're all on Facebook, Instagram. And I know she throws stuff up on the Stevensville on the
web.ca. So to find us just click the businesses tab, you can email me through there as well.
Our iHeartRadio link is there in the top right hand corner and also our online merchandise store.
Our car connection motor mouth gear is all there for you. Grab some, be part of the crew as we help
those who are struggling with addictions get to a total freedom addictions campus for excuse me for
Canada. And the US residents as well. And that's where a new life waits those who are really struggling
through addiction. They know what they're doing there for 20 plus years. And it's amazing to see
the lives change. So let's move on this morning. That's all the housekeeping. It's coffee time.
Yeah, I'm like Jones and for it. I don't know about you, but you know, motor mouth runs on nothing but
high octane 99.5% 5% boost, not a penny less. Let me tell you on three to one,
let's thank Niagara Block at 5000 Montrose Road Niagara Falls, the Grimoire family
for building Canada since 1931 providing amazing building products created right in-house
hardscape landscaping materials to help you create that backyard oasis that summer hideaway
that outdoor space that you've always wanted. They'll help you pick the materials. They have
them right there. They'll help you to find a contractor. They know everybody. They know all
the good guys and all the ones don't go there. Right. Get on their schedule and get your backyard
estimated and get the contractors started and finish it. That's the big thing. Those guys,
they start stuff, but it takes forever to finish and then you got to have somebody come back
and fix it. I've been there. You're better off waiting. I waited two years for the
landscapers to come in and create our backyard space and it looked like Beirut,
like several Beirut car bombs went off back there after they finished, put the building up here
that I'm sitting in in the workshop. That was in 2012. So we had to have that all done in a
bag of chips and a diet soda and the guys did an amazing job because we had fun Fridays
with the barbecue and I fed the guys every Friday. We had something fantastic at the guys
two years on the list to get them to, uh, I wanted them because I saw their work in Niagara and the
lake and I'm like, yeah, we're like that. Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's the thing. They did a great
job. Fantastic job. So you want to align yourself with the best of the best and they can help you
with that at Niagara block three. You ready? Three, two, one. Swiggy time.
Oh yeah. That's so good. That should be illegal on a Saturday. Let me tell you,
you can get busted for that one. That's a good cup of Joe right there. I hope your cup of Joe is
just as good as my own. Exactly. It's got to be good, you know, because going to those places
that disrespect the bean and no, I don't do that anymore. Well, let's jump into the weekend weather
for Saturday anyway. Here's what we got. Saturday's low will be 24 degrees and again,
I don't do the Celsius metric thing. That's just the tool of devil. We speak English here in the
Because everybody understands that should Saturday's low be 24 after 11 p.m. Who cares,
I'll be in bed, you know, it's like, you know, soup, sandwich, then what is it,
Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, go to bed. You know, the senior thing. And the high
today is going to be 40 degrees. Break out the shorts and flipper onies between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Get out of town. I didn't feel that out there. I checked it at 4.15. The temperature range will
feel like 16 degrees to 32 degrees. When does up will make it feel colder than the actual temperature.
So in other words, it's still going to be winter possibility in the region of rain. Just a little
bit. It says 40% chance. We'll push that off. We got things to do. Get ready to cut the grass
in about eight weeks or so. Let's hope April. Let's hope that April is a dry month and we get an
extra shot early shot at summer. Yeah, not like last year. I think it was like end of June. It's
still raining. And then it wasn't till July. Things swung over. I was getting ready to build a canoe.
Yeah, for sure. Me and Skippy were going to have to be filming from a canoe pretty soon.
So we're going to be talking about why Canadians, Canadian winters make family cars age faster than
the engines ever will. Yeah, it's important. There's some stuff there you need to know.
And if you're going to jump in on the fleet service that I teach and do actually do it,
you're going to need a vehicle that's not a collector's piece or you drive a mile, go back,
collect a piece, drive another mile, go back, collect another piece or you can get into the
vehicle with all the doors closed, doors and windows closed. Yeah, that would not be structural,
good structural integrity. It's time to call in the car corner and meet up with the
crusher. It's over. And I'm going to tell you a little story about that.
Name's not included, but it applies to quite a few people that I've met over the years.
They just don't buy into the rust proofing thing. So I'm going to beat that up a little bit this
morning. So get your crayons ready. Get that 16 pack of crayons and that folded up leaf bag. We
call our car connection workshop laptop. Take some notes. If you missed this, you can go to our
channel. And at iHeartRadio, there will be 100 episodes up there of lessons on vehicle ownership
that they never told you. They never told you. We'll be moving into season two episode 101 next
week. That's pretty exciting because there's a lot of information for you in all the podcasts.
They're titled. They're dated. The episode is there and they're all available to you to listen
and re-listen to and come on over. And if you're one of those 93% that haven't subscribed yet,
I'm going to beat on you a little bit today because we need, we should be able to get there.
You guys should be able to get us where we need to go and help us out because we love y'all.
That's why I'm here. That's why I'm doing what I'm doing. I'll tell you right now,
the technician, there's a serious technician problem. I'm not sure if you've been following
it or not, but I just was watching the CEO of Ford Fumoco in the US. They're short.
A minimum of 7,000 tex. They got service bays completely empty in Ford vehicles stacking up
and no mechanics in the service bays. They walked off, they're done. Gone off to do something else.
Why? You're not paying me 24 bucks to be a tech. I'll tell you that right now and treat
me like dog poo. That's why I got the heck out. I went to work for a company after I closed my
shop in 2001 because I blew some discs out in my back. They just about killed me. I was working
80 hours a week. I figured out that my lot boy was making more money than myself. One night,
I'm running off my daily reports to put on the grand poo boss desk by 9 o'clock next morning
and I lived 90 minutes away, one way. I got the TV going and I'm running my reports and I'm drinking
coffee, made some fresh coffee and I'm sitting there in the lounge just having a little break while
the machine's clunking away making the reports so I can tag them, bag them, gag them and get on
the grand poo boss desk for the morning and I did so I'm scratching away doing some math and I'm
going I remember I out loud said I gotta be an idiot. Worked 80 hours a week. I'm making like
six dollars and 23 cents an hour. The high volume wholesale program. That's called salary. Don't
yeah. I figured out I'm working 80 point something hours a week. I'm the first one there,
last one to leave and I live 90 minutes away, one way and I'm making six dollars and 23 cents an
hour. I'm a fully licensed tech and I'm working to fix this dealership. It's going down the toilet
and working with 27 adult children. We got it turned around in 18 months but I'll tell you I
worked 80 hours a week for 18 months. Do the math. How many years was I actually there in 18 months?
That's what it took us to turn it around. I was there four and a half years.
It was I learned a lot and I know a lot about dealerships. Let me tell you. I went in as a
mole and to get information and so that you know someday when I write my book somebody's gonna write
it for me. I'll be drinking coffee, dictating to a ghostwriter. Anyhow, yeah, that's when I woke up
and I'm like yuddy, yuddy, yuddy, six dollars and 23 cents an hour. So anyways, getting back to the
conversation. Fumoko Ford Motor Company US has no tax. They're gone. They quit. They're done. They've
gone off to do something else. All age groups. No one's signing up. And you know what? I'll tell you
this. In 1990, sometime between 92 and 95, I was sitting in a three. It was two days. It was three
nights, two days. It was three days. Three days seminar from Lindertek Automotive in gasoline
alley in Indiana came up to do teaching diagnostic teaching and fantastic texts they brought that
were fabulous instructors. That was I remember it because it was a great, great opportunity to
really learn from some of the best. And I remember Jim Linder himself, he spoke on the last day and
he said this. He said for all of you and there was 2,500 of us technicians in that room at
International Airport International Center. You had Dixon Road Toronto by right by the airport.
If you know Toronto area. Yeah, I keep forgetting you could be listening from anywhere and I see
that in the analytics. There's a lot of you listening from everywhere. And so next week,
Skippy and I are going to show you what one of the great lakes looks like totally frozen over
Lake Erie. We can walk there from here. It's about five minute walk. We're going to shoot a video
and share that with you. Let you into our lives there next week. But Jim Linder said you know,
for all you guys texts that are you know, you're getting we know you're getting beat up out there.
You know, you're disrespected. People really don't recognize you for what you're doing.
Uh, you know, if any other trade electrician plumber contractors struck construction workers,
they get a lot more recognition than you guys being service texts, you're kind of looked down on as
not quite the scum of the earth, but maybe the next level up. And he said you need to stay in
stay in it. I'm going to tell you why he said listen up. The day is coming when cars are going
to be sitting and there's no service texts to work on them. He said, you'll be for the ones that
stick with us, you're going to gain a ton of respect and you're going to be able to stick it to the
man and say, this is how much you're going to pay me an hour. That's what I'm worth. Because I don't
think a lot of you understand. I know it's a little bit of a sideline, but we're going to get
into the topic. We have an hour to fill. So and I can do it very easily. We used to do a two hour
show is here's the thing that was between 92 and 95. I could probably pull the book on that and
give you the exact date because I'll tell you what, I took a lot of notes and I enjoyed myself.
And I'll tell you what, that springboarded me into really getting excited about knowing how to
diagnose a vehicle like within an hour. That's what we learned there. And it wasn't just blah,
blah, blah. It was hardcore training. And I love that. I really love that. I like to be challenged
not by drama, but by something that interests me and automotive interests me. And Jim Linder
really pushed that out. He said, you stay in it because you're going to be able to call the shot
when the day comes and it's going to come where vehicles are going to be sitting for six weeks
or six months and equipment and everything else because the techs are fed up with being treated
like dirt and making nothing. If you think the shop floor number per hour, it goes to the tech,
think again, it does not. It does not. And then the techs have to buy their own tools.
You know, I was a first year apprentice and I was in the whole thousands and thousands of
dollars trying to put myself through through trade school as well, which costs money. And night
school for classes to become a better tech, 250 bucks a piece back in the early 80s was a lot of
money for a week's worth of training. But that's what you had to do if you wanted to become an
asset to your customers and to those you're working on their vehicles. That's the only way
sitting in front of the telly drinking beer and in a bag of eating a bag of chips, chips every
night doesn't get you there. You're a liability tech, not an asset to your customers. And
Jim went on to say he goes, the day is going to come. Well, guess what? I just watched that
yesterday morning during my morning coffee session after doing the podcast. And the CEO is eating his
undies. Let me tell you, because he was a big mouth, pride filled, egotistical turd. Can I say
that on the air? Yeah, turd, sort of French style. And the guys, the remaining guys, they quit.
They said that's enough. You know, first year apprentice going to spend about $50,000 in tools
and got to pay for them. There's no write offs. We don't get to write those tools off unless you
have a business. Then you can write the tools off, but electricians and plumbers can write their
tools off right from the get go. But automotive technicians have never been able to write our
tools off unless we own the company. Period. So I had 99% of my tools when I opened my own shop.
I bought them all out of my pocket, invested in my trade for my customers.
So that's what's going on right now in Canada is not too far behind. The classrooms are emptying
out. Kids are not getting into the automotive trade. Some dealers are trying to entice kids into
the trade by offering them a full blown filled up toolbox, but you got to sign on for five years.
And they're going to pay you a flat rate, which is diddly squat. If the job pays four hours,
and it takes you seven, you only get paid for four. But if the shop's not busy enough, you can't
make a ticket. What does that mean? You can't make a paycheck. You're there for 40 hours,
but you've only been able to get 28 hours worth of payable work. Flat rate doesn't work for the
customer and it doesn't work for the service tech. It's a way for the dealers to rip the technicians
off. And that's what Mr. Ford CEO in the US just learned the golden rule. You did it one time too
many. I would never even open my toolbox for $24 an hour. I got $150,000 worth of tools in my tool
chest. And another tool chest. And another tool chest. It all doesn't fit. And the big stuff is
on shelves. And it never stops. I just bought a new tool this past week. And you know, something I
looked at and I go, man, finally somebody made something to fix that problem. I'm on it. I'll
have that. Thank you. And I'll share it with you on a YouTube video. It's killer. Didn't cost a ton
of money, but it fixes a huge problem. And somebody came up with it. Yeah. So that's where we're at.
And it's happening in Canada. So in the US, if you're a Ford, Ford owner, right now,
what they said yesterday morning was could be six to eight weeks to get your Ford fixed in the US.
Possibly. Now they're really hunting for tax. Good luck. They're not going to fall out of the
sky overnight. Because you know what? They got fed up of being treated like garbage. Paid, like
those working at McDonald's and Tim Hortons are making almost the same money as the service tech
and they don't have to buy all their own tools. It's grunt work. Like, you know, the automotive
service and repair industry has gotten a lot of electronic. That's true. And there's a lot of
diagnostics involved, a lot of computers that involve talking to the cars, understanding what
they're saying to you and collecting data and knowing what data is false, what is accurate,
and the pinpoint testing. But you know, doing breaks and tires and shocks and coil springs and
ball joints and control arms and sway bar links and motor mounts and radiators and cylinder heads
and whatnot. That's the grunt work. Working with a laptop is easy. That's the grunt work
that has to be done. It's hard work. It's hard on the body. Let me tell you. It is. It's hard on the
body. And that's why a lot of average lifespan of a service tech is about 38, 35, 38 years of age.
That's it and they got to get out. They're done. So anyways, thought I'd share that with you because
you know what? Respect your technician. If you've got a good one that you trust to work on your car
and not sell you stuff and that you don't need, work their weight in gold right now because
classroom size is shrinking. Service techs are not standing in line looking for a job.
The shops are looking for the service techs and they've gone off to do something else where they
can make some real money. Absolutely. I totally agree. And here we are. And that conversation was
had in a room of 2,500 service techs, but sometime between 92 and 95. Yep. And here we are. It's real.
This is the real deal. And I'll end up with this. When there's no service techs, somebody just said
it to me this morning. We were talking about it. I said, well, let's just stop and think about that
for a minute. No automotive service techs or technicians in heavy duty trucks and equipment.
How long before products aren't being able to be moved because the trucks are down?
How about ambulances? Police cars.
Companies that have fleets that move products, sell products and deliver products.
Then it comes down to the you and me show.
Like truck passenger vehicles, people movers, buses, coaches.
It all comes to a grinding halt. What does that look like? A disaster.
A disaster. Schools aren't pushing the automotive anymore.
So we're we have reached that threshold. So I thought I'd share that with you this morning,
because that's it's it's reality. It's here. It's right in our face. And that's what it is.
So why Canadian winners make family cars age faster than the engines ever will is the corrosion.
And first and foremost, that is number one on the maintenance list is to get that vehicle
rust proofed every year. I recommend every year, but if money is tight every 18 months.
And I do promote a product that's on my website, but they don't pay me a single dime.
But unfortunately, they do have one of the best products on the market, and that's the one I use.
So if you want to go and take a look at it, the logo is on my homepage.
Yeah, these guys are tighter than a duck's butt. But anyways, that's okay. I'm allowed to say that.
Yeah, it's okay if I'm advertising them for free, but they don't want to pay. Not gonna happen.
No tiki, no laundry. That's how I work. Not all the time, but with that.
So you can have a look what product I'm using. It's the one that I've been using probably,
I think I'm in the 15th year now. Anything else? If it drips, it's junk. If it's rubberized,
it's junk. If it's petroleum based, it's junk. If it's fish oil based, like the K,
that's all I'm going to say about that, the K, it's junk. It drips. So period. If it drips,
it's junk. It should remain on the vehicle and it should be positively charged and it chases the
negatively charged electrons and that's what makes it creep into all the nooks and crannies. So you
can take a piece of metal and I will do this test and we'll record it for you. I'll weld two pieces
of sheet metal together and I'll just tack weld it and I'll squeeze it in the vise and then I'll
spray the edge of it and then we'll look at it in 48 hours and the product will be between the two
sheets of metal because it works on molecular structure. It doesn't drip and it attacks the
salts, the acids from road salt and it neutralizes those acids, but it creeps and that's what you
want. You want a product that stays on the vehicle and continues to move and get into all the nooks
and crannies where we really can't get to because the product moves. It chases the negative electrons.
Hello ladies because it's positively charged and it's chasing the negatively charged ladies running
around your vehicle that are in the in the metal. So wherever there's metal, it's negatively charged.
The molecular structure of the product's positively charged unlike charges attract.
That's right. The electron theory. The positives chase the negatives and that's how it works and
it works very, very well. So if many of you go through the drive through and grab a cup of coffee
and the other day I can't believe I did grab a cup of coffee. I was jonesing for one. I didn't have
time to put my thermos together and I had to go out the door and go return some car parts and get
the right ones and it kind of ate up my day and I'm like, I got to have a coffee. So I rolled into
a donut diner. One of my favorite coffees and there's only one around. There's one in Stevensville.
So I thought I'm going to zooc through there get a coffee and then I saw Barney burgers.
Yeah. You know they call them walnut crunch, but if we call them Barney burgers,
like I think I'm going to have a Barney burger. I've been good this week.
Let's do it. Let's have a cup of coffee and Barney burger. Five bucks and I'm going
Jeepers. I should have brought my thermos and I bake. So I, you know, I haven't lately, but
the last week or so I did a big cake before that carrot cake with cream cheese icing. That was good.
I gave half of the way. You know, I'm not that I like something with my morning coffee, but
yeah, that's like a lot of cake. I made a double cake. Anyways, I couldn't believe it. I'm going
five bucks and I'm thinking about rust proofing. If you go through that drive through say three
times a day, if you take the cost of one cup of coffee or beverage, I mean, if you have a super
duper chai latte thing with a shot and some cream on it, I don't even know what that's worth.
20 bucks, maybe, I don't know, nine bucks. Take $2.50 a day and put it in a cup or a jar
or a chasen sandborn can. You got more than enough to have your vehicle rust proofed
once a year and it's money well spent. I'm going to get Skippy to take a shot of all the vehicles
that we have in our fleet for car connection and they all get used and you'll see just how well they
do when they're squirted every year. Or like I said, at least every 18 months, maximum. And that
product is on our website. So when you get there, you'll see it starts with a C. So you'll be able
to open that profile page. You'll actually be able to see the product put on and everything. You'll
be able to chase it down and then you'll know what I know. And so that product neutralizes
the acids from road salt because this liquid brine, I have the engineering sheets on that
through some connections through the town that I live in, the townies got me some, I said,
can you give me some information on that stuff? Because we went from using sugar beech juice
to salt brine. And the reason was the sense per liter. Yeah, it was like, I can't remember
exactly it was like nine cents a liter for the sugar beet juice, which doesn't rot your car out
to the salt brine because it's three cents a liter. But the engineers described that salt
brine they squirt on the roads. And for those of you live in the sunshine state, you probably know,
you're going what, they spray salt brine on the roads where you live. Yeah, it's wickedly corrosive.
So if your vehicle is not protected, I don't care what the salesman says, oh, you know,
you'll void your warranty and this that and the other, those are the talking heads. That's the
white noise. And you'll hear me talk about that in the fleet service video that comes out
in about 45 minutes. It's going to drop on our YouTube channel. Please watch it. And please
really think about what I'm telling you, because it works. It absolutely works. If you keep the
vehicle solid and buy into the protect it from the rusties, you can keep that vehicle 25 30 years
if you want and never have to get another one. Kid, you're not my FJ is 19 years old. It will
have a birthday in July. It will be 20 years old, 20 years old. I hated going into debt for it when
I had to. I needed a bigger SUV that would pull our boat and take, you know, kids and people out
just for an afternoon and just hang out and just chat and fish and have a good time and enjoy the
outdoors. And I couldn't do with my Honda CRV. And I really liked that thing. I took a lot of
ribbing from my service tech buddies. We're like, Hey, motor mouth. That's a real cute SUV you got
there, buddy. It's kind of a girly thing, don't you think? Shut up. No coffee for you, buddy.
So anyways, I really didn't want to let it go. But I sold it to a good family. And I got a really
good buck for it. It was a 98 CRV. It looked like brand new. And that's what you can do when you
put some effort in. But first, you got to have a solid vehicle. When the rusties get into it, it's
over. She's singing, if you know what I mean. She is singing. It's over. But if you got a vehicle
that's still solid, even if it's five years, eight years old, it's pretty solid. You know,
you got something to work with. You got the foundation. You got the foundation on it.
It's like this 2008 Nissan Rogue. I haven't put it on. It's insured and everything. It's ready to go
on the road. It can go on the road, but I haven't because I want to get it rust proof first. I don't
want any salt on it underneath. It has some dry spots. And I've kept it dry. I've kept it off the
road. Now we're getting into where we're seeing 40 degrees, 41 degrees. That's perfect temperature
to get it sprayed. So I've been waiting for that. And then I'll get it really blasted. And then I'll
get it done a second time in the fall to catch it up and get the sauce on there because I invested
time, effort and energy to bring the thing back from, you know, almost distinction because it sat
for 11 months and it never moved. You'll be shocked. Go and watch the videos on our YouTube channel,
the rusties that was starting, the flakies underneath and all the work that I did to it to
bring it back to life. We were blessed to have it given to us, but I really had to think about
whether we're going to rescue it or let it go. And you know, because it's clean inside, the body's
clean. I thought, you know what, it runs good, runs like a jewel. The mileage is decent, 119,000K.
I mean, it's just getting warmed up. Let's do it. So that's what I've been waiting for is kept it off
the road on purpose because it's not protected. It needs to get protected and then we're on our way.
Then we're going to win. I'll get that thing up there. So our FJ is going to celebrate a
birthday in July and will be over half way to 400,000 clicks. You'll want to watch the fleet
maintenance video and subscribe and get into our teaching videos. Because if you want to put money
back in your pocket, you want your vehicles to last longer, have huge longevity. Anybody out there
got a 20 year old vehicle you're driving right now? Let me know. Hit me up with a comment.
Send me an email. Let me know what it is and what your secret is because I'll tell you that fleet
maintenance pattern that I created, you'll get there and you'll put a lot of money back in your
pocket. This thing you got to change your car out every three to five years. Are you kidding me?
Keep your piece of junk. I don't need it. Honestly, I speak my mind. If that's all you got,
you can keep your piece of junk. I don't want it in my driveway. Now I'm going to share a story
with you as we get ready to wrap things up. So Saturdays are now Q&A for one hour. Shoot me an
email. Nile at CCBusNet.com. My other email that's all tied together is motormouth.jankins
at gmail.com. I always put that information in the descriptions on our YouTube channel and also
the description on all our podcasts. And folks, if I could say this, take a moment to read the
description of the podcasts and the YouTube videos. I give you a lot of tidbits in there
in the description. I put time into the descriptions just like writing you out a service order. I
don't just say change engine, thousand bucks. I put the details in there so you can follow along
and you can see what I've done to your vehicle. I treat the description boxes the same way. I give
you a lot of nuggets in there, a lot of details as to what I'm talking about so you can really wrap
your head around what you're going to learn. The basic fundamentals are going to keep your car alive
forever. 20 years this July, just on the FJ. 20 years and still going. They're probably going to
have to lift me in there as I get older, but that's, you know, that's okay. Yeah, I'll get
Skippy to do that. She can push me in there, flip me up into the FJ. It'll be good. Anyways, here's
the story of a lovely lady. No, I think that's something else. Tell me what program that's from.
Yeah, if you're from that era, here's the story of a lovely lady. What program is that?
Send me an email. Comment. So anyways, this young couple looking for a vehicle at the time and I
was working. It's funny because I was working on a Nissan Rogue and it was going to be for sale
and these fellas were working on a house right next door to us and they were house flippers.
Great bunch of guys. Great craftsmen. They really love what they did. So they're fixing this house
up and the fella says, Hey, do you work on stuff on the side? I go,
maybe who are you? I'm working next door. I go, okay. I said, Yeah, what do you need?
How can I help you? He says, Well, my wife and I bought, I need a pickup truck more than I need
this little Nissan Rogue that we bought. It's been a great ride and we've looked after it,
but it's just we need a pickup truck. For my tools and what I do, this is just not working.
So I want to fix it up, get its safety and sell it. So would you look it over and see what it
needs? I know it needs brakes, he said. So anyways, I get into this thing. I did all the work.
He gave me carte blanche. He says, do everything it needs. I had him look at it. We went over and
he goes, Yeah, go ahead and do it. Do what it needs to do. We got to get its safety so we can sell it
to somebody certified. So anyways, long story short, I fixed this thing up and now it's for sale.
And like he's offering it out of steel, 3,500 bucks. I just had just spent like $1,500 on it,
fixing it up. And he I go, you're kidding me. He goes, No, first $3,500. It's gone and it had leather.
It was nice. It was really nice black on black. It was loaded and the mileage was decent. It was
way under 200 was like, I think it was like 160 something. And so this couple is looking for a
vehicle and I said, you need to come and look at this. It's a fantastic deal. Well, they umbed an
oddness and that and blah, blah, blah. And as it always goes, they go and look at something else.
And they paid three times the amount of money. And now this is like four years later, maybe five
years later. And the cars all rotted out. I just heard the other day. Oh, so and so has got to get
replaced their cards rotted right out. First thing I said to them after they got it, they asked me,
what should we do? Get it rust proofed. They didn't do it. So all the rockers, it's a Chevy. They've
had lots of problems with it. Transmission problems, you name it, the list as long as your left leg.
And now it's all rotted out. The structure's all rotted out. The thing's falling apart. Five years.
Had they arrest proofed it, they'd probably still be putting money into it,
but it wouldn't be rotted out. So all that money they spent is gone. Now they got to replace it.
But they didn't listen. And that's okay. You know what? If you don't want to do it, that's okay with
me. It's not my ride. It's yours. It's not my money. It's yours. But if you want to learn something
and see what I do and follow in my foot tracks, I will not steer you wrong ever. I won't. I'll tell
you the truth. What needs to be done and when and you get it done. Guess what? You're the winner.
You will win the automotive service and repair game and not get stuck in the never never plan.
Paying principle and interest. Working hard. Home to work, home to work, home to work, home to work,
home to work, home to work. And that's just one week. Make the car payment, honey. And then by the
time it's paid off, the things are wrecked. Why? You neglected it. You didn't maintain it.
Instead of doing preventative maintenance, you wait till the wheels coming off or the service
light comes on or the thing won't start before you put any money into it. You don't get to drive
these things for free. There ain't no free mileage. You got to pay for every mile, every kilometer.
Somebody's going to pay. Period. Someone's going to pay whether you pitch it off and go get something
else and it's still fairly decent. Like the rogue that we got donated to us. That's a great blessing.
But I worked my tail off to bring it back to life. But you know what? It's going to serve like crazy.
It's going to be fabulous because that thing, it runs on farts and a jar. I really believe that.
I'm going to put some fuel in it today. Yeah, I like to keep it full. In case you got to get out
of town. You know, in case you got to get out of dodge real quick, take the gas miser. If the weather
is bad, grab a four by four and get your go bag and take off. Take off your hoser to the Great
White North. That's where we live. Great White North. So I hope you get something out of our
Saturdays. So as I announced already, it's a one hour Saturday program. Just you, me,
me, you, motor, mouth and you and me and some coffee and I'll answer your questions. So if you
have questions, you can send them over to me Monday through Friday and I'll peel them off and I'll
answer those questions on the Saturday morning show eight, eight till nine. So it launches at eight.
It'll be one hour. So a nice cup of coffee and a snack and you're there. Simple as that. It's that
website. It's our 2025, 26 nonprofit faith based organization that is serving men, women, children,
meals, love and hope, changing lives one at a time and single moms in the Niagara region.
They feed out the door every Tuesday, the side door Tuesdays and Fridays, almost 300 meals.
See what you can do to help because they're doing everything that you know, many of us,
we just don't have time to do, but that's what they do. They have amazing volunteers.
Maybe you could be a volunteer. Maybe you could donate once a month. Let me tell you,
they know how to take a nickel and bang it into a dollar and lives are being changed there. The
kids, they're loved after school and fed and they help them with their homework. They tutor them,
mentor them and they can take music lessons and they do games with them. They have movie nights
and all that is done for free. It's all provided. Nobody asks you for a dime. So
would you check them out? You give a donation to $25 and you get a tax receipt.
And my job every year for 31 years is to tie ourselves in with the car connection with a
nonprofit faith based organization that is working to change lives in our very own backyard.
So till Monday when we celebrate our 100th episode of the Car Connection Workshop,
have yourself a fantabulous weekend. Enjoy every minute of it. Drive safe out there.
Happy healthy motoring. Peace, patience and kindness always. And we'll see you Monday morning
for motor mouths morning drive at 8am. Bye for now.
About this episode
Dive into a lively morning chat blending car care, community stories, and practical advice from the Car Connection workshop. The host shares personal anecdotes, highlights trusted local pre-owned car dealers, and emphasizes the importance of solid financial planning with expert guests Tony Miele and Larry Tietro. The episode balances humor and helpful tips, touching on winter car challenges, estate planning, and budgeting for vehicle maintenance. Listeners get a warm, down-to-earth perspective on keeping their rides reliable and their finances in check, all while enjoying a friendly, conversational vibe.
Canadian winters don't usually destroy engines - they destroy vehicles through corrosion. In this one - hour Saturday Q&A episode, we break down why rust is the real silent killer of family vehicles, how salt and moisture creep into frames and body structures, and why you must start with a solid foundation before investing in long - term fleet - style maintenance.
If your vehicle is structurally compromised, no maintenance plan will save it. Protecting against corrosion may be the single most important step in extending the life of your car.
We're also gearing up for Episode 100 and Season Two. Have a question? Email it Monday through Friday and I'll answer it on Saturday's one - hour show.
