What's going on, Car Guys and Car Gals?
00:21
Welcome back to the CarGuy Coffee Podcast.
00:23
We are at NAMAD in lovely Las Vegas having some fun.
00:28
Fred, we have an incredible guest on the show
00:30
who is a frequenter to one of these events
00:33
and for most conventions.
00:35
We are so thankful to be hanging out with our friend,
00:37
the one, the only, DJ Sardana!
00:43
What's going on, DJ?
00:44
Excited that you're here.
00:46
Brother, I appreciate you.
00:47
This is somebody that we met at our very first convention
00:49
that we worked together.
00:50
And he was there, loud and proud, doing his thing.
00:53
We even interviewed you during that event, didn't we?
00:55
Yeah, and it was one of the very first interviews
00:57
we did there, so he's like bookending it for us right now
00:59
in a sense, and I always appreciate you, your energy
01:02
and your realness, man.
01:04
We run into him in the halls every time.
01:05
He's one of the first people we always see.
01:07
We always take a selfie, and my favorite thing
01:09
he says after he's done, he always says, tag me.
01:13
I love him, his family.
01:15
He's a hard worker, and he's one of the best
01:16
over at C4 Analytics, if not the best.
01:19
So I love being having you here, brother.
01:20
I'm so glad you had a chance to talk.
01:22
I know you just came off the stage.
01:23
How exciting was that for you?
01:26
Yeah, I know this event's big for you.
01:29
First time in 24 years.
01:32
When I spoke in high school and stuff like that,
01:34
but never had an opportunity.
01:36
Honestly, that's something I didn't realize,
01:38
and I'm so glad that you got to do that here,
01:40
and what a great place to kick it off for you.
01:41
I have a feeling that's the first of many,
01:43
especially now that you know that you brought something,
01:45
and I'm sure you're excited about bringing
01:47
some more to everyone out there.
01:48
The one thing that you do bring
01:50
is you bring the realness when
01:51
it comes to what analytics and data, right,
01:53
with your people and your clients.
01:54
And this is something that's happening here.
01:56
They're bringing the realness to their people
01:58
and making sure that they're getting everything they need.
01:59
That's why they had people like you speak
02:01
and so many others.
02:02
So far, the highlights, who's somebody here
02:05
that you're excited to watch speak on stage?
02:09
So just being here is just a different world.
02:12
I met so many vendors out here that told me
02:15
what's my first name at and what's my fifth name at.
02:17
And they said, what should I expect?
02:18
And I'm like, this is just compared to,
02:21
I've done 27 shows in seven years.
02:24
Every NADA and digital dealer and all in between.
02:26
But coming here is a different field.
02:29
It feels, what I told somebody yesterday,
02:31
it feels like going to a family reunion.
02:33
In automotive, all these people, we made the second family.
02:37
And when you come here, their love is different
02:39
than when you go elsewhere.
02:40
You go to other shows and people hide their badge.
02:43
People cover their face, act like they're on their phone
02:45
and don't want to give vendors time.
02:47
Well, when you come here, everybody comes over.
02:52
Everybody stops by and the new people give you 60,
02:56
120 seconds to at least learn about you.
02:58
They give you an opportunity.
03:00
There's opportunities here more than I think all.
03:04
I agree and I think it is the culture
03:06
and what it is that we're finding people that look like us,
03:08
talk like us, feel like us, right?
03:10
We don't feel so foreign.
03:11
They can actually explain things to us
03:12
in a way that we understand.
03:14
And that matters, right?
03:15
Being able to have representation inside that.
03:17
I know that I like to team up with people
03:19
that are different to people that sit,
03:21
not necessarily minority,
03:22
but people who fit in the same seat that I fit in, right?
03:25
When I feel that with them,
03:26
I feel something, a common bond
03:27
that I know that they have the same struggles,
03:29
the same ideas and the same like work ethic
03:31
that I may have, right?
03:32
Because I know that where they came from.
03:34
We all come from somewhere different.
03:35
But one thing we all have in common
03:36
is we all work our butts off.
03:38
One thing about minorities is that we do things
03:40
a little bit different because not because
03:41
we have a chip on our shoulder,
03:42
but because we have a chip on our shoulder.
03:43
You know what I mean?
03:44
There's something extra we want to.
03:45
Sometimes it feels like we have to work a little bit harder.
03:47
Well, sometimes we do always have to work
03:49
a little bit harder, I'm being honest.
03:50
But at the same time, that's what makes us special
03:52
and I think that's what makes us stick out.
03:53
And especially when it comes to automotive.
03:57
Knowing that there's different things
03:59
that help us stick out,
04:00
for you particularly, this event,
04:02
being that you've gone to so many different events,
04:05
what is it that you think makes this event
04:08
more dynamic being in Vegas?
04:09
Because being inside of Miami
04:11
probably has its own vibe.
04:13
You don't have all the casino action
04:15
all over the place.
04:16
What is it like having it actually here inside of Vegas?
04:19
We're only on day two.
04:21
It's early, it's early.
04:23
Still trying to figure it out.
04:24
But from having done five of these,
04:27
and this is my fourth trip to Vegas
04:29
and I have two more this year,
04:31
I personally think that this show
04:34
is better suited in Miami.
04:36
Because of that family and that togetherness,
04:39
there's a gentleman I was talking to last night
04:41
that said, when we're in the fountain blue,
04:42
there's that one main bar.
04:44
Everybody from the whole conference is there.
04:46
There's that togetherness here.
04:49
There's too many places people can be.
04:51
It's too spread out.
04:52
It's too scattered.
04:53
So it really is the opposite of that family.
04:56
It's everybody just doing their own thing.
04:58
So, NADA here, yeah.
05:01
Just so many more people, fine.
05:03
But with this tighter community,
05:06
I think Miami is a better vibe.
05:08
Yeah, I'm with you.
05:09
The idea of making sure that
05:11
you do accommodate a lot of people,
05:13
you do have options for a lot of people
05:16
is something that I'm sure plenty of planners
05:18
look at and consider that.
05:19
But actually being present,
05:21
being here during this particular event,
05:23
I do love that it isn't as clickish as other events.
05:27
A thousand percent.
05:28
But there is definitely some notes to be taken
05:31
on being able to have a singular place
05:33
for everybody to gather,
05:35
everybody to come together.
05:36
Take some notes on that.
05:38
But that's really great feedback.
05:39
Speaking of great feedback,
05:41
there's been some awesome sessions,
05:43
great stuff brewing around right now.
05:44
What is it that you have had the chance to jump in?
05:46
I know, again, still only day two.
05:48
What have you had the chance to actually jump in
05:50
and hear from and actually maybe learn?
05:51
It's harder for me to do that
05:53
because I'm manning a booth.
05:54
So when we come here, our purpose is different.
05:57
So it's really about generating new business,
05:59
building relationships,
06:00
and meeting with dealers
06:01
and seeing how I can better their business.
06:04
I was interviewed on a podcast session yesterday,
06:06
which was awesome first time.
06:08
I got to speak today, which was awesome.
06:10
I think Miami is in a different place.
06:11
This show is really about,
06:13
I guess, a little bit of self-branding.
06:17
You, brother, not to catch off.
06:20
But your self-branding is very strong.
06:21
One, because you're always rocking these awesome sneakers.
06:24
I don't know if we can get this into the shot,
06:26
but he's always got these lit up shoes
06:28
where everybody sees you glowing,
06:30
coming down the hallway.
06:31
So that's definitely working on building your brand.
06:33
Everyone has to have their stick
06:35
or their differentiator,
06:36
something that makes them stand out.
06:38
Everybody's got, Fred's Fred.
06:40
When you see Fred, you know it's Fred.
06:42
You've got jackets, I got shoes.
06:46
I love it, I love it, I love it.
06:48
You, as an individual, is special.
06:50
C4 is very blessed to have you in their team.
06:52
And I know you've been blessed by C4 too.
06:54
I know it goes a two-way street.
06:55
But as an individual, man,
06:56
this is a great event for you
06:57
because, again, other people like you
07:00
who are doing things and taking it to the next level,
07:02
you get a chance to speak for the very first time
07:03
at an event like this is an amazing opportunity
07:06
to be able to tell your story
07:07
beyond what you do inside C4, right?
07:10
It's what you do as a person.
07:11
Look inside market,
07:12
how you can help them do things
07:14
beyond even just the data that you have with them.
07:16
What I love is what's inside the market.
07:18
What do you think for you inside dealerships right now
07:20
is the biggest thing
07:21
that needs room for improvement inside most stores?
07:24
Ah, man, it's so big.
07:28
I think fear of change is what a lot of dealers are facing.
07:31
A lot of dealers are just running
07:33
with what they've been doing
07:34
and they're afraid to look at other opportunities.
07:39
And sometimes it hurts their business.
07:41
One thing I keep running into this year
07:43
is a lot of dealerships are like,
07:44
oh, I'm friends with my marketing guy
07:47
and we hang out on the weekends
07:48
or he takes me to dinner and this and that and the other.
07:50
I don't want to cut them, I'm friends with the guy.
07:52
But then the problem is, okay,
07:53
so we looked at an analysis of your store's online presence.
07:56
We looked at your sales.
07:57
You're not hitting your objective.
07:59
You're not checking all these boxes
08:01
with your friends with the guy.
08:02
So because of that, you don't want to change.
08:04
That is a big thing we're running into this year
08:06
is a lot of dealers just afraid to look at something else
08:09
because they don't want to hurt that relationship.
08:11
But you can still be friends with the guy
08:12
after you make changes.
08:14
You don't have to cut off your friendship.
08:15
And the question is if you do make the changes,
08:17
if they cut off the friendship, were they really friends?
08:20
And that's the question you need to ask yourself.
08:21
And that's a tough cookie.
08:23
We dealt with owners ourselves that we worked with
08:25
that stuck with same things because they had relationships.
08:28
And yeah, I get relationships.
08:30
Where do you draw the line?
08:32
All the success of my business
08:34
Versus a friendship.
08:35
There is a line and there has to be results.
08:37
No matter how good the friendship is,
08:38
if there is no result or no growth
08:41
and there's nothing there for them
08:42
to really be able to help you get to the next level,
08:44
then they should be excited to help you find somebody
08:46
to help them get to the next level
08:47
because they're your friend again, right?
08:49
So we got to make sure that
08:50
we understand what that relationship really is there.
08:52
Is it a friendship or is it a business friendship?
08:54
And if it's just a business friendship, I get it,
08:56
but you need to explore it.
08:57
I'll tell you one thing's for sure.
08:59
If you let that person know you're looking
09:01
at other options, they may step up their game.
09:03
Maybe they'll do some things,
09:04
but if they don't even make a shift for you
09:06
and they know you're out there looking,
09:08
that means that we're going to stay flat lined
09:10
with you the whole time.
09:10
It's a good time to actually implement something else.
09:13
And I think that you're right on the money with that
09:14
is that we get too caught up in relationships
09:17
when it comes to friendships inside the industry,
09:19
dealers, they get comfortable, more than the friendship.
09:21
It's a comfortable thing.
09:22
I don't have to worry about this.
09:23
I know what to expect.
09:24
This is what I'm getting,
09:25
even though it's not what they want to be getting.
09:27
And that's the craziest part.
09:28
And sometimes they think that because of the friendship
09:29
that it'll show the same on the business side,
09:32
but it doesn't always.
09:35
But there is an element of you do business with me,
09:39
I do business with you.
09:40
I'm in your community.
09:41
Hopefully you're doing business with me
09:43
because I'm in your community.
09:44
Once you become part of our ecosystem,
09:47
hopefully we keep doing business together.
09:49
That should be the design,
09:50
but it should never be at the sacrifice of each other
09:52
that are doing business with each other
09:54
because the idea is that we're doing something
09:57
It's not that I'm doing business with you
09:59
because I get something out of it.
10:00
I should be doing business with you
10:01
because I genuinely help and assist
10:04
and advance what it is that your cause is.
10:07
That's why we pick the people that we pick.
10:10
Cutting a relationship that has been built for years,
10:14
it has sometimes probably been
10:16
through many different situations.
10:18
It's hard to cut that off.
10:19
But at the same time,
10:21
it's also hard for people to just break their thinking
10:24
and recognize there's more out there.
10:26
There's more opportunity.
10:26
There's more things to learn.
10:28
I was having a couple conversations with a few dealers
10:31
and especially when it came to the training aspect
10:33
of things where they're very much fixated
10:37
on saying what it is that my people get
10:41
is my years of experience.
10:43
And my years of doing this,
10:45
I'm going to transfer that to them
10:48
and I handle all the training in-house.
10:51
How do you see that working for the long-term
10:53
of a dealership that's trying to adapt during these times?
10:57
So what's the specific question?
10:58
The kind of thinking that it takes to only be
11:01
the one that's in leadership
11:03
being the one doing the training
11:04
without actually ever educating yourself.
11:09
Everyone's got to educate themselves.
11:11
I don't think that there's no silver bullet
11:13
and not everybody's perfect
11:15
and there's always something else to learn.
11:17
I always tell dealers just be open to that conversation.
11:20
Just be open, just hear me out.
11:21
Let's have a conversation.
11:23
Let's just talk through things.
11:24
And if you hear something that makes sense,
11:26
great and if you don't then that's fine too.
11:28
I was literally on a call on Monday with a dealer.
11:32
we looked at you guys like two years ago,
11:33
we ended up not doing anything.
11:34
We're not doing anything now, marketing was.
11:37
And how do you do that?
11:38
And he told me, he says,
11:41
I told your BDR on the phone that I didn't want a sales pitch
11:43
and I'm like, I'm not giving you a sales pitch.
11:44
We're having a conversation.
11:46
I said, just be open.
11:47
Just be open to hearing what we're about.
11:49
I said, do you have some challenges in your story?
11:51
Yes, we have a challenge with old age units.
11:53
He said 40% or 50% of our inventory is over 70 days
11:57
and we have a hard time with that.
11:59
And I told him, I said,
12:01
you're telling me that you don't want to sign up
12:02
with somebody for marketing
12:04
but you have challenges right now.
12:06
I said, if I can show you a path to adjusting those challenges
12:10
and selling those cars and speeding up your turn
12:15
and we make all the numbers make sense,
12:16
then why wouldn't you do business with it?
12:18
So we agreed to table the conversation to next week.
12:21
And I just told him to just be open.
12:22
Let's just have a conversation.
12:25
And if we can find a solution for you
12:27
and it works, then great.
12:28
And if we don't, no hard feelings.
12:31
We can just part of friends, it's all right.
12:32
Speaking of brewing solutions,
12:33
you all have been supporting our show.
12:35
C4 Analytics, shout out to you all.
12:37
We appreciate you all.
12:38
And you're talking about building that relationship
12:40
with dealers, making sure that they take a little bit of time
12:43
Tell everybody watching that may not be familiar
12:47
and what it serves the automotive industry with.
12:50
We are a full service digital marketing agency
12:52
helping with all of the pieces,
12:54
the whole ecosystem of digital marketing,
12:56
SEO, SEMs, social media,
12:59
online reputation management,
13:00
connecting all the pieces.
13:02
Our belief is when you connect all the pieces
13:03
together, you can have that one message out there,
13:05
that full cohesive approach,
13:07
as opposed to some of the vendors
13:08
that do all the part solutions.
13:10
Some dealers will hire three or four
13:12
or five different vendors in their marketing.
13:14
The problem is you got five messages out.
13:17
Every company works as a silo.
13:18
They're in their own lane,
13:19
they're doing their own thing
13:20
and they're only focused on what they do.
13:21
So then you end up having a disjointed message out there.
13:24
Our belief is when you can put all those pieces together,
13:26
you can have one brand, one message.
13:28
And on average, we tend to save dealers about 31%
13:32
on their ad spend because we hired 19 people out of Google.
13:35
We follow Google best practice on everything that we do.
13:37
So having smart people and smart tech,
13:40
we can really save some money.
13:42
So they got a team that's ready to make sure
13:44
that you guys get real information,
13:46
not just some stuff that they feel.
13:47
One thing we talked to Tim Cox earlier
13:49
and he says it's about facts, not feelings, right?
13:51
And when you have facts like they do
13:53
and you have people who have been there
13:54
and they know what's going on,
13:55
they know how Google works,
13:56
then they can help you.
13:57
Saving you 31%, I hope that you guys heard that.
14:00
That's a huge number.
14:01
And if you could get anywhere near 31%,
14:03
even if you could get 20%,
14:04
even if you can get 10%,
14:06
why would you not even give it an opportunity
14:07
so he could save you some money
14:09
so that bottom line's a little bit better
14:10
so that top line's even bigger, right?
14:12
So that being said, I absolutely love that.
14:14
But man, one thing I love about this guy here,
14:17
we got some stuff going on.
14:18
As you can see, there's announcements going on.
14:19
Well, we're gonna talk through this for a second
14:21
just so we can make sure we get this.
14:22
But one thing I love about you
14:24
is you've done more than just,
14:26
you're more than just a guy
14:28
who works in the automotive industry.
14:30
You're somebody who's a husband,
14:32
a father, a brother.
14:34
You're all these things that you really,
14:35
and you hold that really dear to you, man.
14:37
I love that about you.
14:38
So that being said, you also are somebody of color
14:42
growing up in this country, right?
14:43
Having to go through things, seeing things,
14:45
sometimes having to take different paths
14:47
to be able to get where we know.
14:48
Go, we talked about earlier,
14:49
I said having a little chip on your shoulder.
14:51
It's not that you have a chip on your shoulder
14:53
in a sense, but we have to do things
14:54
and maybe do things more
14:55
because people are not seeing it at first.
14:58
You wrote a great book
14:59
and let's give him a shout on this book.
15:01
Folks, this book came out how many years ago now?
15:02
It's been like three, four years now?
15:05
Four years ago, he dropped this book right here.
15:06
In this book, if you guys haven't got it,
15:08
it's on Amazon, it's been an Amazon bestseller.
15:12
It's everything that you want.
15:13
And if you're somebody like us,
15:15
this story will resonate with you.
15:17
Tell people what inspired you to write this book.
15:19
Like I said, when I spoke up there,
15:22
when something happens to you one time,
15:24
well, it's a one-off.
15:25
When something happens to you more than once.
15:27
So after I got to let go of a few jobs,
15:29
when I was doing my best,
15:31
I was like, man, I need to put this into writing.
15:33
Maybe share that story with others,
15:34
maybe inspire someone else,
15:36
or help someone else.
15:37
That's been a super challenge.
15:40
Yeah, that's true though, man.
15:43
And we're loud here.
15:44
So I hope that we get that.
15:45
You think, hopefully they're picking that up.
15:47
But what I gotta say is that I'm proud of you, man.
15:49
I love watching what you do.
15:50
I love that you always putting yourself out there.
15:53
I'm so happy that you got to speak at this event.
15:55
And I'm gonna be an advocate for you, brother.
15:58
I want you to be applying for everywhere you go, man.
16:00
Maybe we'll all three get on the stage one day
16:01
and have a great conversation with some people.
16:03
I think that we can all share some great knowledge together.
16:05
There's somebody I can see us doing that with, man.
16:09
I appreciate your support for us.
16:11
Man, they are loud over here.
16:13
I'm trying to say some serious stuff, just saying.
16:17
All right, but that being said,
16:18
DJ, seriously, brother, you are a brother to us.
16:20
We always got your back, just like you got our back.
16:22
Matter of fact, one of the reasons why C4
16:24
even reached out to us is because this guy
16:25
put our name in the hat.
16:26
So I appreciate that so much.
16:30
Ever since the pandemic, when we met, man,
16:31
ever since we met, on those Thursdays, Thursday calls.
16:35
That's when it all started.
16:36
That's where it did all start, man.
16:38
And then we got to meet in person,
16:39
and then it just been growing ever since.
16:41
And one of my wife's favorite people to run into,
16:43
which she hasn't had a chance to run into yet,
16:45
she was like, I haven't heard the Cristilla yet.
16:47
I know she can't wait to see it, though.
16:49
I'm sure we'll run into you tonight.
16:50
Man, you're a gentleman.
16:52
You're a great core guy
16:53
that's out there doing some big things.
16:54
You're beyond the salesman of the month
16:56
beyond salesman of the year.
16:59
And I appreciate you, man.
17:02
We definitely appreciate you, brother, coming out here
17:04
and leading us around a little bit,
17:06
letting us know the ins and outs of these events.
17:08
But your opinion definitely does matter,
17:10
especially being a frequenter to these events.
17:13
We appreciate everybody that's holding it down,
17:15
especially those that are brown.
17:17
I love all of the faces.
17:19
I love all the ethnicities.
17:21
I love all of the diversity that's out here.
17:23
And you should be out here the next time.
17:26
If you are a minority dealer
17:28
or you want to support minority dealers
17:30
and you want to see a different side
17:32
of how excellence is done here in automotive,
17:35
make sure that you come to NAMAD next time.
17:37
And you will definitely get to meet this guy.
17:39
OK, but you need to go ahead, get the book, get the book,
17:43
order it right now.
17:44
And if you actually send him a message,
17:47
you'll probably want to graph it for you.
17:50
Personalize it just for you.
17:52
Make sure that you do that.
17:53
Just have him go to the website, djsortano.com.
17:57
You guys order right there, go to the website, get set up.
18:00
We'll make sure that we have it right here.
18:02
Heck yeah, heck yeah.
18:03
Car Guys, Car Guys, thank you so much for tuning in with us
18:06
over here at NAMAD, the 45th meeting of all of these members.
18:11
We are excited to be out here.
18:13
Car Guy Coffee's having a great time.
18:14
But it got even better because we're hanging out
18:17
with the one, the only, DJ Sarvena.
18:23
Appreciate you, brother.
18:26
Oh, we're not done yet.
18:28
We're not done yet.
18:29
We're not done yet.
18:30
Yeah, we're not done yet.
18:30
So you all know how it is that we got to rock these out.
18:34
We got to drop those F-bombs, everybody.
18:35
So we got to drop these mics and get to flight.
18:40
On three, one, two, three, again.
18:45
Focus, fly, and keep rolling.
18:49
Let's hope you see it, everybody.
