Carvana is a company that buys and sells used cars, mostly through an online process. The caller used it to sell their car before trying to buy two new vehicles.
The caller says the dealership refused to honor the deal they believed was offered based on the advertised pricing. This is a common negotiation/consumer-protection issue and can hinge on fine print (qualifiers, stock limits, financing terms, or eligibility).

Welcome to the CarPro show. Jerry Reynolds the CarPro was in the auto industry for over 35 years,
and in addition to getting his sixth win from the Texas Auto Riders Association for best radio
show in Texas, he's a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, along with fellow members
Dan Rather and George Carlin. His co-host Todd Chambliss just became a member of Applebee's
Hall of Fame for finishing off 84 check-in nuggets without using a dipping sauce.
Now let's get to straight talk and honest answers about everything automotive on the CarPro show.
Welcome to the CarPro show. We appreciate you being with us today. We're going to be with you and
we will be talking about automobiles. So if you're thinking about making a move with your
transportation situation, I'd love to talk to you about it. I'll give you some free advice that
won't cost you a penny. And we're going to try to entertain you a little bit here for this hour
of the CarPro show. The phone number here at theretailmyride.com studios is 800-926-7777-800-926-7777.
Tell me your plan. So what are you driving now? What do you think you want next? What's your timing?
I need to know if you're looking at an SUV, tell me if a third row seat is important,
because that will always change my answer. If you're looking for an SUV and you're not sure
what size you want, that's something. What's your priority? What's the most important thing
to you? And those are the kind of things I need to know to be able to give you
good solid advice. We've got some great dealers at CarPro.com that roll out the red carpet for our
listeners and they will also give you fantastic pricing. But the main thing is you can get a good
deal on a car these days and you can have fun and you don't need to spend a half a day inside a car
dealership and that's the truth. I have found a way to shortcut the system and I think I'm one
of the few that could do that because I owned car dealerships for so many years. So there you go.
That's the story behind the CarPro show. 800-926-7777. The old roadmaster Todd Chambliss is with me.
Yep. How you doing pal? I'm doing very well. It's been just a crazy busy week but you know
everybody getting ready for tax season and then you have of course masters on TV and you got to
watch some of that going on. I love the masters. I hate playing golf but I love watching the master.
There's something about it just that old story tradition they had there and what that whole
master's thing is such a prestigious thing and it's a lot of fun to watch. Really good golfers
at the top of their game like that. Oh boy. Did Roy McElroy put on a show yesterday? I understand.
He's hitting them just as far or farther than anybody has on that course.
Well he's a yard through yesterday. He was a yard short of Tiger Woods longest average.
Oh okay. Gotcha. So Tiger Woods was hitting off the tee. He averaged 342 yards one year and
so far this year Roy is doing 341. Man. So he can actually beat Tiger's record there and that would
be kind of cool but forget that. That boy has got his putter working. I mean it is working. Yeah
Question of the day. We're going to fill in around people who are wanting to buy cars.
I want to talk to you about this. What is the worst car you've ever owned? The worst car
you've ever owned. We played this game for two hours on the Dallas show this morning.
Calls were crazy. Oh my goodness. We talked about you guys. We talked about Renaults.
We talked about Eagles. Olds. Yeah. There was a couple of those. Oh my goodness. Some of you
had some awful cars. Yeah. A lot of AMC calls. The Pacer and the Gremlin. Oh yeah. All those.
Holy cow. We even had a listener that owned a Eagle. Oh. If you remember those from the Talon.
Yeah. The Eagle Talon. Yeah. Good looking car. Yeah. Interesting looking car. But boy what a piece
of crap. I love that. 800 926 77 77 we go to Mark in San Antonio, Texas. Mark welcome to the car pro
show. Mark are you there. Don't be shy Mark. Yes sir. Can you hear me? I got you now.
Yes, sir. I'm in San Antonio. I'm the issue with the dealership with home. So you help me out, sir.
Oh, yes.
I just, yeah, I just want to call in, you know, I'm a longtime listener, a military vet of 22 years.
So I just want to appreciate, you know, I've been looking for, well, my wife passed away in two months ago.
So my daughter, we have a key assurance that, you know, my wife had, and my daughter pushed me so it's a mind in her every time we got.
So I decided to sell it to Carvana and then I started looking. I went to Jordan, went to Blue Bonnet.
I couldn't get any advice. I said, well, why not just, you know, contact car pro Mr. Jerry.
And then you recommend it to Ramacone for West.
So I went a call and then we had a bumpy start, you know, from the manager, you know, because I was ready to buy two vehicle.
And I guess they didn't think I was serious, you know, so they never, it was a bumpy road and a back and forth.
And then finally, you know, I complained to you, I think you reached out to Mr. Finley and then finally Mr. Crawford, you know, Jamie Crawford, you know, he jumped on it.
And I said, you know, I don't have anything because they had an advertisement for a certain price of 65k for the anniversary, 60 year anniversary edition for the Bronco.
But when I came in, the price increased to 73, then I said, that don't make sense.
And so I was trying to work a deal and it was for two, one for my daughter and one for myself.
But the long story short, they made me so mad. They said, oh, we couldn't honor that deal.
So I left, I went home, email you and complain.
And then I guess Mr. Bradford, I guess the sales director there, he contacted me.
I didn't want to answer.
I keep, you know, pushing the stop button and finally answering.
So he wanted to make it right.
But the long story short, he ended up honoring the price that they had posted a week prior.
And then I made a deal for my daughter's car and he even gave me additional $200 off of my daughter's car.
So I ended up getting, you know, I think they lost money on my deal.
But I think from my lesson learned, sir, is that from Mr. Bradford is that, you know, customer is more important than making money.
So I guess I came from, you know, Mr. Redmond Cohen, like driven to serve.
And I think Mr. Bradford, Mr. Crawford did the driven to serve.
He went out his way to make me happy.
And that's why he ended up buying two Broncos.
And then I'm going to read by third one was my 60 year old, 60 year old girl, complete her job as lesson.
So that's Mark.
Thank you.
Thank you for calling.
I appreciate it.
I got ahold of Henry Finley, the journal manager after I heard from you.
He jumped on it.
He made it right.
And that's all that matters.
I appreciate the call and I'm sorry for your loss.
I didn't know the part about your wife that I'm really sorry about that.
And this week's classic car of the week.
This is an attention grabber.
If you drive it in excess of any speed limit, it's probably going to be a good candidate to get a visit from one of our friendly law enforcement officers who would love to pull you over and talk about the whole situation.
This is also on the block, across the block at the Meekum auctions Houston today.
And this had a few guesses as to the year, but like you said, I think in the earlier show, sometimes they don't change the body style too much between years.
So it could be a little bit of a debate as to which year it is.
But we're talking about the classic car of the week that is on our Facebook page.
Easy to find.
Go to carpro.com at the bottom.
There's a link to our Facebook page.
You can access that and you should join that and follow it because all kinds of great content and good stuff done throughout the week on Facebook.
But for this, if you guess the correct year making model, you could be in the running for your very own auto heat shield.
Perfect for your car that's cut to your windshield and you will not want to do without it.
So make the start today, go to our Facebook page, make your guests on the classic car of the week.
And I've had a lot of people ask me lately for some reason, I guess because it's getting hot.
You know, we're working a buy an auto heat shield.
You can go to autoheatshield.com.
And when you go to check out, this is a wonderful product.
If you're not familiar with it, it's it's custom cut to your particular car.
So it blocks the entire windshield and it does a great job.
I mean, it is perfectly custom fit to your car.
I think the last time I looked there was $39 or something.
Yeah, they're not.
Yeah, they're 30 30 of like 40 to 45 something like that.
If you throw in the like the shipping and all that, but it's a reasonable price.
And it works any time of the year, especially in the summer, of course.
But if it's really cold, you can draw in some sunshine to kind of help offset the coolness inside the car.
I don't travel without it.
It's a great product.
And it rolls up really tight.
You just pitch it in the back seat.
Most people do grab it when you need it.
But when you go to check out, put in car pro, all caps, one word.
Car pro, all one word capital letters.
And I believe the offer right now is free shipping.
Well, that's good.
Yeah, I like that.
It is.
So the question today.
Yes, is what's the worst car you've ever owned?
And I'd love to talk to you about that.
If you're thinking about making a purchase of a new or used vehicle, let's talk about that.
I don't take mechanical questions, but everything else is on the table.
Let's talk to Bill in Sealy, Texas in the Houston area.
Bill, what's happening?
Hello, Jerry.
And hello, Todd.
Hello, sir.
When I first started driving around 76, I had a hobby of moving around Jeep boxes and all machines.
So I bought a 73 Toyota pickup truck and it was in the shop more than I drove it.
And they had to order parts out of Houston because I grew up in San Antonio.
So, yeah, it was just a nightmare.
I ended up making enough money at my hobby to go out and buy a brand new El Camino, which I love.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I love the El Caminos too.
I had one.
What was the model of the Toyota?
Do you remember?
I don't remember.
I've got a picture of it.
It was a yellow color.
I got an actual picture of it with the jukebox in the back and I was 16 years old.
And it was a small truck, right?
Right.
It was a smaller one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And as you go back through history with Toyota and their trucks, you know, there was a time
when the Tundra was a small truck.
But I don't remember before Tacoma came out.
I don't remember what they called them back then.
Is it the Stout or the Hilux?
The Hilux was one of them.
That's what I was just thinking.
But the Stout, I don't think the Stout has ever been sold in the U.S.
Oh, okay, gotcha.
That's an overseas truck.
But, you know, it just goes to show that, you know, every startup, new car company,
even Toyota, as good as they are today, you know, they ran through their problems.
And you were the recipient of that bill, but, you know, I said it on the earlier show.
When people say to me, and I hear this all the time, boy, they don't make cars like
they used to.
And I just, I go, thank God, you know, if you've never had the joy of having to pump
the accelerator to get a car to start, or worse, flood it from pumping the accelerator
to get the car to start, you haven't lived.
And I tell you what, there's a lot of people that have no earthly idea what that was all
about, and cars before seatbelts, you know, holy cow.
Bill, I appreciate the call.
Thank you very much.
Always let me know if I can help you.

Howard in Oklahoma City, you are next on The Car Pro Show.
Howard, what was your worst car?
Well, believe it or not, my first car was a 1972 Bento that I bought brand new for $2,300,
and that was not my worst vehicle.
No?
I've got a tie for the worst vehicles I've ever had.
The first one was a 1971 Buick Skylark.
It drove like a dream, but it had electrical problems that nobody could figure out,
and I finally wound up having to get rid of it because I never knew when it was going to start,
when it wasn't going to start, and how long it was going to take before I could get it started.
Oh, wow.
Then my second one was a 1979 Chevy Cheyenne Pickup.
Oh, really?
It had the short stroke six-cylinder engine in it.
I had to get about a mile head start to try to pass anybody in that thing.
Oh, wow.
And I could not keep clutches in it.
It was a standard transmission, and I had that thing for about four years,
and I put like four or five clutches in it.
The last one I put in had a mechanic working for me that had a brass clutch.
We put a brass clutch in there and needed even a brass clutch.
Good grief.
Holy cow.
Man, I would have thought Chevy Trucks by 79 would have been bulletproof,
but you dispelled that rumor.
I appreciate it.
I got to tell you a quick story, Howard.
I told it on The Dallas Show earlier, but my very first job at a car dealership,
I was 16 years old.
This dealership, I was a porter.
They just gave me whatever crap jobs nobody else wanted to do, right?
So, they had ordered 50 pink 1973 Pentos, and they were having a pink Pentos sale,
and my job was to write the price on the windshield of every single one of those Pentos.
Well, beating of a job.
And the price?
Yes.
$18.99.
Wow.
And they had air conditioning.
They did, AC.
Yep, AC for $18.99.
You used the shoe polish to write on the window.
You know, that car got a really bad rap, but it wasn't a bad car.
As long as you didn't get rear-ended in it, it was fine.
If the last car you bought made your blood pressure reading higher than your SATs,
let's fix that.

So Jerry Reynolds is the car pro, and I'm Todd Chambliss, newsletter this week.
And of course it comes out typically every Friday, so you need to get in on that.
Go to carpro.com, go to the bottom there is a sign up there, which you'll get the latest
one sent to you immediately if you do that right now.
And when you do, you can open up and read the second most clicked item on the newsletter
this past week, the first quarter auto sales results.
Most everybody reporting, not everybody, as you mentioned.
And it looks like majority of some of the major names here had a drop.
I mean, this is obviously cumulative over the quarter.
Toyota, even with some numbers that were not the best for them, they still reported overall
they were up in number one.
But some of the big names there, except for Stellantis, which they had like a pretty good
quarter too, it looks like.
Yeah, they did.
They got it going on at Stellantis.
I'm right about that next week in the newsletter.
Okay.
We expected first quarter this year to be down some in the reason simple.
Last year in the first quarter, if you recall, there was all the talk about tariffs and car
prices jumping.
And there was a lot of people who got on the bandwagon and bought in the first quarter
that didn't intend to buy in the first quarter because they were afraid prices were going
to go up and they did.
So pretty smart people that were we expected to drop a little bit.
But the burning question, that was number two.
What was number seven this week?
That would be Tide's video the week.
Yeah.
All the way down to seven.
Yeah.
And see, I thought I had a pretty darn good one this week.
I complimented you on it.
You did to your credit.
You did on Thursday.
You said, yeah, you got a pretty good video.
And then I opened up the report last night and said, oh, really, Siri?
You never know.
I guess the one good thing I can always say is that not always, but in this case says
that there was a lot of really good compelling content that was going to be better than mine
anyway.
Yeah.
Corvette Stingray review I did was there.
My advice column EV or hybrid, which is better for you.
Yeah.
If you're a diesel owner, you've probably wondered what's going on with the EPA and diesel exhaust fluid.
I've got that.
I got the latest updates from the Environmental Protection Agency on what's going on with
that.
So if you're a diesel owner, you sure don't want to miss that.
And then number six on the list after my video the week was about the dealership group that's
going to spend $75 million because they were trying to deceive people.
Looks like that backfired on them.
It certainly did.
Now, I will tell you this.
If you will subscribe right now at the bottom of the page at carpro.com, you'll get yesterday's
in your inbox immediately.
And you can see what we're talking about.
There was a ton of good stuff this week, ton of good stuff.
So, you know, join us next week.
I've got another good one coming up.
I've already done a lot of the work on it.
And there's some great stories coming up next week.
James in Houston.
Welcome to the Car Pro Show.
How can I help you, James?
I'm looking to get a new F-150 and I want to know the difference between the EcoBoos
and the PowerBoos.
Okay.
The EcoBoos been around since 2009, been a very good engine, especially the 3.5 liter.
It is a twin turbo six cylinder and it has got some kind of power.
400 horses, lots of torque with it.
Good gas mileage for a truck.
You just got to kind of watch the rear axle ratio.
If you get the wrong axle ratio, it won't get great gas mileage.
And if you're pulling something and you get the wrong axle ratio,
it's not going to do the job for you.
So, you really got to pay attention to that.
Now, the PowerBoost is a hybrid engine and it has been a great one as well.
The PowerBoost Hybrid has got an inverter that comes with it
and you can power, what is great for is powering tools.
If you actually work out of your truck, this thing works great.
I know a lot of occasions where people have powered their entire house out of their truck
because they had the PowerBoost engine.
So, when I reviewed the PowerBoost, I got right at 29 miles to the gallon on the highway
and I was trying.
I mean, I got a heavy foot, but I was really careful trying to see how good it could be.
I've had reports back from listeners on the PowerBoost of over 30 miles to the gallon
in a full size truck.
So, it's for fuel economy.
The towing capacity on the PowerBoost isn't as great as it is on the EcoBoost.
So, it kind of depends on what you're using the truck for, James.
Yeah, I'd be pulling a little travel trailer at Casita.
I think they're about 3,500 pounds.
Oh, yeah.
Either one would do that.
Right now, I have a 2012 F-150 EcoBoost with 265,000 miles and I love my truck.
And I just want to make sure.
I thought about this because this might be my last truck because I'm in my 70s.
So, I want to make sure that it's going to last a while.
The history on both those engines has been great.
Now, we've got more history on the EcoBoost because it came out a decade before the PowerBoost did.
But I'll tell you what, that EcoBoost, I mean, I hear from people who have had problems with theirs.
And the only thing I can tell you is my experience with people that I've tracked and people that I know
that have done their maintenance the way they were supposed to, haven't overloaded their trucks.
They've had a great experience with it.
But when you get something as popular as the F-150, the number one selling vehicle in America for decades.
And no matter what engines in there, you're going to find problems with them.
It's just the law of averages.
And so, my experience with the EcoBoost has been great.
I will say this, and I've said it before here.
If I personally were buying a new pickup today, it would be the PowerBoost.
That's the one that I would choose.
And part of its fuel economy, part of it is being able to run a lot of stuff out of the bed of that truck.
I think it's a neat, neat feature.
But whatever you decide, bro, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
The incentives are still good.
Right now, with Ford in Texas, they've got owner loyalty rebates.
So, being that you have one now, you'll qualify for about a $4,000 rebate.
And there are other incentives on top of that.
So, go to one of the Ford dealers at my website.
Go to carpro.com.
And I've got like four really great Ford dealers there.
Pick the one that's closest to you or put your zip code in.
It'll pick for you and be sure and talk to my contact.
I promise you, they'll make you a great deal on one of those.
I appreciate the call, James.
That's going to open up a line for someone.
If you want to grab it quickly, it's 800-926-7777.
And again, that newsletter subscribe page is at the bottom of carpro.com.
We don't spam you.
We don't have any ads.
We don't even have pop-ups.
Well, and another example of Big Brother kind of keeping an eye on you in Illinois.
Looks like there is a proposed bill working their way or working its way through their state legislature.
If you are a repeat offender, whether it's too serious speeding or reckless driving convictions within a year,
if this passes, they could well install a speed limiting device in your vehicle, a governor for the speed,
so you can never exceed whatever the speed limit is.
So, you were mentioning earlier that you said you saw maybe some potential problems with them doing something like this.
I see lawsuits.
I see all kinds of problems with that.
And the next thing, and I've got this for next week's free newsletter, is a new tax to take the place of the gasoline tax.
Okay.
Gasoline tax hasn't changed since 1983.
Okay.
Was it like 18?
18.3 cents.
0.3.
It's never gone up.
Yeah.
And that money was airmarked to fix roads.
Okay.
Our roads have gotten worse.
Yeah.
Cars have gotten more fuel efficient, so fewer gallons of gas are being pumped.
Electric cars came along, hybrids came along, diesels came along.
All of that has created a shortfall in the fund to fix roads.
So, they're coming up with a different way to taxes.
Oh, great.
And they're talking about doing it on weight, on the weight of the vehicle you drive.
And aren't the EVs a little heavier with the heavy batteries?
They're a lot heavier.
Yeah.
So, potentially that could be a problem.
The Hummer EV are reviewed weighed over 9,000 pounds.
Oh, my gosh.
Imagine the tax on that.
Can you imagine what that's doing to the roads?
Yeah.
I'm sure.
I'm sure it's tearing them up.
No question.
Let's talk to Will in KD, Texas.
Will, welcome to The Car Pro Show.
Thank you, Jerry.
I've got currently a 2017 4Runner SR5.
Yep.
Got about 90,000 miles on it.
Great car.
Love it.
Been looking at the new 4Runners.
Yeah.
A little concerned about the price.
And a little concerned about them changing the engine to a 4-cylinder.
I wonder what your thoughts were on that.
You know, I don't worry about Toyota coming out when they come out with a new engine.
They do the best and most testing of their powertrains of anybody in the industry.
You know, if it were me, you got two choices.
You got, and both of them are 4-cylinders.
You got the regular turbo and then you got the turbo hybrid.
And I would definitely go with the hybrid.
And as I've said on the show a thousand times, Toyota, if I'm looking at a car that's a Toyota
or a Lexus and they offer a hybrid in it, that's what I'm going to buy.
But the big thing is the hybrid not only doesn't get better fuel economy, although slight,
it gives you quite a boost in horsepower.
And I think the 4Runner needs that boost in horsepower.
So I would absolutely go with the hybrid.
So far, every 4-cylinder that Toyota has made has done great.
Again, I don't worry about Toyota.
When new engines come out, some car companies I do.
That's the kind of stuff that keeps me up at night, but with Toyota, no sweat.
I hear you on the price, but it is a much improved product from the standpoint of the things that are available.
In your 4Runner, and all of them before this generation, you couldn't get a power liftgate,
you couldn't get power mirrors that fold in, power seats on the passenger side.
There was just a lot of things that they did offer on the previous 4Runner that you can get today.
So I can justify the price because of what you're getting.
I've got some great Toyota dealers in the Houston area, Will.
Look them up at carpro.com.
And it's one of our favorite points of the show, the happy listener moment.
When we talk about the folks who have taken Jerry's advice, they have gone through the website
and they have set up a situation where they are talking to one of his dealers
and they have a great experience with their brand new vehicle in Houston.
Apparently James had a great story using Kevin Jackson as the car pro contact there.
It's an excellent service, traded in our Ford, had to wait a few days for the new car to get here.
After leaving, we had an accident totaling our Ford called Alex at the dealership there
and he delivered a loaner car to the scene of the accident.
So imagine you have a vehicle, you have a wreck or you just drove it off the lot basically.
Seeing the accident, you've got a brand new Toyota waiting for you.
Wow.
Didn't want us to be without a car. That was Saturday.
On Tuesday, they delivered our new RAV4 to use and they were 150 miles away, going above and beyond.
How many dealerships do you think that are really close to where you are,
which may not be the best situation, are they going to go above and beyond like that?
That is, in Kevin Jackson, good grief. What a great guy.
He's a rock star is what he is.
Yeah, that was a great commercial too.
He always does a great commercial every time.
I enjoy his commercial.
Absolutely. He puts a lot of thought and they're always clever, always fun.
Yeah, yeah. And he's got a great voice too.
He does. He does.
There you go. That's the kind of stuff you get when you go to carpro.com,
near the top of the page and click on Find a Certified Car Pro Dealer Near You.
Put your zip code in, put in whatever brand of car you want to look at.
You may have to drive a little bit further, but I'm going to tell you, it'll be worth it.
It'll be, you can drive an hour and still get back with your new car quicker
than you can if you don't do it my way.
That's true.
I promise you, I hear it every single day.
It's worked for 24 and a half years.
Knowing the right time to trade is a huge thing right now.

About this episode
Jerry Reynolds and Todd Chambliss kick off with tire-road-contact talk and listener calls about buying and owning headaches. A military vet shares a Bronco pricing dispute that got resolved after Jerry’s outreach, emphasizing customer service over margin. “Worst car” stories roll in, including problematic Toyotas, Buicks, and Chevy trucks, plus nostalgia about the infamous Pinto. The show also covers classic-car guessing, auto heat shield promos, auto sales quarter trends, and practical engine comparisons for F-150 EcoBoost vs PowerBoost and Toyota 4Runner’s new 4-cylinder/hybrid direction. They debate speed governors and road-funding taxes too.
