Texas Radio Hall of Fame, along with fellow members Dan Rather and George Carlin. His co-host Todd
Chambliss just became a member of Applebee's Hall of Fame for finishing off 84 check-in nuggets
without using a dipping sauce. Now let's get to straight talk and honest answers about everything
automotive on the CarPro Show. So good to have you with us today on this last day of the month
and the last weekend if you're in the market and you're in an area where the car dealers are open
seven days a week they're going to be putting tomorrow's business February 1st into January,
I guarantee you that's what car dealers do when it falls, when the end of the month falls on the
weekend. So tomorrow is January 32nd at car dealerships so the deals will still be good. The
incentives run through Monday night so if you can't get in this weekend there's still time to get
these incentives that we have seen escalate all month long and some of them started earlier and
that's that's pretty rare for January but this year for whatever reason the month got started off
kind of slow and they started pouring incentives on and here we are. A lot of our dealers have dealt
with bad weather this month most of them lost in Texas most of them lost their entire weekend
last weekend especially the North Texas area and then also in the in the mid state areas around
Austin dealers and San Antonio dealers got hit. Houston from what I hear they got extreme cold but
not much in the way of precipitation. So whatever the case we've got some eager dealers and if you
want to bargain this is a good day to get one I'll always tell you when it's not a good time to buy
but I'll also also tell you when it is a good time to buy. Todd Chambley says with me.
Yes sir and a boy with with that going on and everything else this I guess the last a few
months have been just you know you shake your head if you're in the car business and you say
this is so unlike what we have known I mean January alone I mean yeah the incentives are
supposed to be horrible and and they're not use car values are supposed to drop and they have not
they have gone up yeah which was a shock I watched the auction this week again and I mean everything
was high even when you see Teslas bringing more than manheim market report guide
that that's surprising because that the trend had been that you couldn't really get that much for them
no it's not it's been way off on wow that's crazy and they're they were bringing big money this week
so just really surprised luxury car prices are up if you've got something to trade
that's a nice car that a dealer can resell I'll say it again and I'm I know I sound like a broken
record but the use car market cannot stay this high and sustain itself it's gonna drop I just
don't know when I'm tired of predicting and being wrong that can't be good to keep thinking oh well
this is gonna happen now with all of a sudden it just kind of turns no upside down on you a little
I pride myself in you typically on point though give them good advice and good predictions oh yeah
you do this long enough and you get good at that and I man this use car market has been a mystery to
me for since right after COVID ended yeah I would dare say if you are like if you were on the fence
where you're like well maybe a little upside down and maybe this you know January is typically not
the time to go if I'm trying to trade a car in you might be surprised what they could do this weekend
yeah and I have been telling people that we're looking at used cars in December wait till January
yeah if you can because the market will drop in January and surprise it didn't it did not no it
did not wow let's talk to Tom in Browns Valley California hello Tom what can I do for you
hey hey Jerry it's great to talk to you you too buddy hello to Todd as well thank you yeah
hey my question my question is this we bought a 2024
tundra hybrid yeah and it's been a great truck but I know there's now a recall on the non-hybrid
motors it's the same motor and you know it's very disappointing of course and I'm sure it's
a it's very unlike them but I guess I just have some questions what or what your feeling is on
on that whole situation and what the likelihood of them including the hybrid as I understand
that they don't include the hybrid now because technically it's not a safety issue because if
you get stranded in the middle of the road the hybrid motor will still work there I haven't heard
of a single issue out of the tundra or sequoia 3.5 hybrid the i-force max I'm not heard of a single
instance of any problems with that engine at all it was all the non-hybrids so I don't think you've
got a thing to worry about you know I talked about the the recall on the air and I followed it very
closely we had I don't know four or five articles in my newsletter about this because it was it was
news this doesn't happen with toyota and it was all back in 2022 when it all started and
just like typical toyota does and I was I was waiting to find out with baited breath
are they going to try to fix these or are they going to replace them and toyota
is replacing they're still doing it but they're replacing the entire engine they didn't have to
do that they weren't under any legal obligation to do that all they were all they were obligated to
do was fix they're replacing which I expected them to do because it's toyota I don't know I don't
know that I'd have felt that way about any other car company to be honest about it and so the reason
I think the reason that they did it was because the difference in time that it takes to replace an
engine versus the difference in time it takes to fix an engine is dramatic I mean you can do
this they send a complete crate engine to the dealer he can have that puppy out the old one
out the new one in and taking a test drive a good technician can in about 10 hours a day
and and that's so much better for the consumer because they get their truck back quicker and
there's no room for error so bottom line we gotta go but I don't think you got anything to worry about
help you no curve balls call now 1-800-926-7777
you know most cars today as you kind of talk about in your advice column are reliable and for the
most part they're in you know they're good to go they're dependable yeah every once in a while you
get recalls and all that uh I can be kind of uh I guess I do this too and I can over research
something looking for reviews yeah and sometimes talk myself out of making a purchase and it's
it's one of my faults I bring that up because of you have a great advice column on the danger of
internet car advice and you taking a lot of reviews and account that may not be qualified that may
be trolling it may be just incorrect and rather than going and discussing with one of your dealers
what your needs are and how they can take care of you you can go and over research something and
focus on the wrong thing so if you're looking for a car and you're a person like me that likes to
go and look at reviews read that article before you start doing all that it may be instead go to
one of the dealers that Jerry recommends that way you can figure out the best fit for what you need
or just call me on thechase.com car pro hotline 809267777 that would work the most dangerous
thing out there are these forums oh my gosh yeah you get you get people that just want attention
and they'll they'll put something bad about a car you know and it's not true yeah and there's no way
you're gonna be able to verify that I see cases of one car dealer getting in one of these forums
and writing horrible things about their competitors cars yeah just to stop people from buying them
exactly I see cases where people just absolutely write a skating
post in a forum or chat room and they didn't they didn't do any of the maintenance yeah I
see cases where people will slam a pickup truck and they tried to tow 20 000 pounds with a truck
that was rated at 12 000 pounds yeah that's gonna be a problem and they wonder why they had trouble
right exactly good grief context and then the last thing is people who love their vehicles
don't go online and tell everybody but if you have one little problem it's everywhere absolutely
and that completely skews what you can draw conclusions from yep exactly right you love
your tell you right and I bet you ain't never gone online and posted about it only on this show when
you've asked me and that's it I've never done that because what's the point yeah I just live my life
and ride right around happy in my car the way it should be yes right you're a happy happy kind of
feeling yeah that's right I am exactly Karen in Montgomery Texas Houston area welcome Karen what
can I do for you um I've got two cars that I like one's a 2012 C 250 Mercedes the other is a 2018
Chevy Equinox I don't need two cars which one do I pick the Mercedes has about 140 000 and the Chevy
has about 92 000 keep the Chevy for sure keep the Chevy yeah the the Equinox has been a great
vehicle but the big thing is is when you have issues with it the cost of repairs is going to be a
fraction of what it will be with that Mercedes and the Mercedes that is at the age where parts
are going to become an issue being able to get parts to repair it so if it were me
you may like the Mercedes better but that wasn't part of the criteria for your question
so I'm just telling you that the there's more life left in the Equinox and it's going to be a lot
less to repair down the road typical Equinox from that era is good to 150 000 miles if you've
done the maintenance so I think at the miles the Mercedes is at you're already past what
you know you you're likely to get if you haven't started having problems my prediction is you're
about to so I'd get rid of it while it's at peak value and keep the Chevrolet
okay then with the Equinox I've got a lab that I put in the back seat is there any
way that I could take off the seat one or both of the one in the back seat so that she's got
more room to spread out yeah I'm I'm sure the bottom of the seats separate from the top of the
seat usually you can just pull up on them and pull them out you might get somebody to help you
with that they tend to be heavy but it can be done even if you don't know a crossover from a cross
stitch Jerry Reynolds can help you call the car pro at 1-800-926-7777
and rick in tom ball texas welcome rick what can I help you with
only capability a solid rear axle and of course a full-size spare tire tucked up under that bumper
but we also have some I wonder what it is I'm back here I guess you'd say I think he's listening
to another automotive show I'm not sure rick are you there hello yeah yes I am yes I am good good
good what are you listening to I was looking at a review on a Toyota four-runner uh online
youtube I got you uh no I've been debating what I was going to get I narrowed it down to the
accurate mdx or the Toyota four-runner uh because my wife is real short and now I realize you can
get electric running boards on the four-runner and I think they go down about 10.2 inches from the
ground yeah but so that's going to help because I got a f-150 with electric running boards and
they're 14.5 inches up and she won't drive that truck it's too big yeah I understand now I think
I'm going with the Toyota four-runner I'm a little worried about the turbo engine but do I go with a
hybrid or non-hybrid I'm going to get the limited anytime I can get a hybrid in a Toyota or Lexus
I'm going to get the hybrid for not just the fuel economy but for the extra power too and Toyota
is I often call them the smartest car company in the world and the reason for it is they are
they have figured out how to increase fuel economy and horsepower at the same time
their hybrid system rick has been around for 25 years and it started with the Prius
and it has been flawless you might have heard me talking to a guy a minute ago with the tundra
and the tundra had an engine problem but the hybrid didn't and and so for for various reasons but
mainly fuel economy and horsepower I'm going to get that hybrid anytime that I can and I'll tell
you this new four-runner is really something special and they're they're doing you can get things on
this new four-runner you couldn't get on the old one like a power lift gate or power folding mirrors
or the drop down running boards it's a great choice I'd go with it all day long definitely
get the hybrid and definitely talk to one of my dealers the next time international talk like a
pirate day rolls around tell your friends you got advice from the car pro call 1-800-926-7777

welcome back to the car pro show with Todd shambles and the car pro Jerry Reynolds
by the way Ford and General Motors they're not going to be coming to you about getting
a new checking account or a savings account for you to do conventional banking but
they did clear hurdle a regulatory hurdle that's a no small feat to get FDIC approval to be a bank
so they can do auto loans yeah so is that going to really save that much money I mean I know that
it'll it'll keep things centralized and they probably get more control of who they can give
loans to I would imagine I don't know what the point was of but what are the odds of both of
them doing it at the same time that is interesting as well there's there's some sort of
plan here something sinister who knows well I I don't want to use the word collusion because
I'm sure that probably would trigger also all sorts of investigations we don't need that but
they both get bank chargers and they get them at the exact same time
did they just coincidentally both apply for them and then that's when the FDIC got
yeah no it was not no yeah I know it's gonna be it's gonna be very interesting to watch
I've never done a GM like I've never really bought a GM but certainly I've gone through
Ford for quite a bit and this will be interesting to see how the process is you know once everything
kind of clears and they're doing their own thing yeah we'll see yeah I do have some neat stories
coming up in next week's free weekly newsletter now if if you do if you're not a subscriber and
you subscribe today you get yesterday's in your inbox immediately then next week on Friday you'll
get a new one and I will give you the top three segment best sellers for 2025 and how many they
sold and whether or not their sales were up or down okay for the year all right for instance
mid-sized trucks Toyota Tacoma was number one 275,000 vehicles Ford Maverick was number two
which was a little bit of a surprise yeah and then but way behind Tacoma oh yeah yeah
and then further back than that the Chevy Colorado so I'll give you that for every single segment
that's out there Tesla in a surprise is ending production of the Model S and the Model Y I read
that story too you know why yeah I know why they're gonna make a robot robot exactly which
tells you they may be shifting this entire company if if Elon thinks the robots will do better than
electric cars and in the United States that's probably a pretty good bet yeah and he's got his
other companies out there this could signal the beginning of the end for Tesla
interesting and they were red hot for a while and oh they had no competition forever right
exactly that's the point and now that everybody's got one and they've got this issue with keeping
value and selling and all that kind of thing it's it's enough to make them rethink the whole model
I guess the process I've got a story about automakers largely staying away from Super Bowl ads this
year yeah that's interesting it certainly is I have alarming trends in auto loan habits
which was another interesting read you remember when we talked about
and and I'm not I've never made it a secret I'm not a big fan of insurance companies yeah
when it comes to automobiles yeah and I was I was so tickled to death that State Farm was
under fire for undervaluing totaled out cars remember that story that was back in September
yep I do that story sort of just went away
guess what what it's back uh oh yes a appeals court has decided that they were going to look at this
again which is great news because State Farm was ripping everybody off that had a totaled or stolen
car that makes me sad because growing up that my dad was State Farm all the way till he died
and I have State Farm now because I used to have another carrier and they went double up on the
price and that was competitively the best price so this is making me rethink everything now
I don't think they're good neighbors anymore
and if you work for State Farm I apologize oh my goodness all right the formulas that they used
to value people's car to to write them a check when their car was totaled out was total BS and crap
that's amazing that's gone on this long I hope I hope this class action lawsuit so that was my
question was it class action or was it yeah okay the source another an appeals court is looking at
it again and I hope that they reinstate and that they give some relief to people
because I that's it to me it's just so wrong I mean it's just so wrong you hit people at a
vulnerable time when they don't sometimes they don't know if they have options or not and they
just take the deal and then they have to go and pay the difference well and too many people
the insurance jester calls that's why I wrote the article it's on my FAQ page about how to deal
with an insurance adjuster the investor calls and says okay we've deemed your car total we're
going to write you a check for x amount of dollars and people go oh okay and they're done yeah they
don't they don't check it they don't question it they don't do anything and that's you've got rights
yeah and not many people do that they're just afraid to go and assert themselves like that the law
protects you against that and yet here we are yeah so there we have it all right but there's a lot
more in the next next week's newsletter also okay like Jackson Texas Earl welcome Earl what
are gonna do for you yes there are a couple of questions actually uh one I have a 2022
ram eco diesel yep and I was told by mechanic that once the emissions goes out or starts having
problems a lot of money so the question is should I hang on to this thing it's only got 41,000 miles
on it uh garage cap real nice interior and everything else or uh should you know get rid of it
and then the other part the other part uh is I'm thinking about actually upgrading to a
three-quarter ton yeah and which three-quarter ton uh used uh duramax or or bodge or what would you
recommend okay I do think you should get rid of the eco diesel it was a it was a great engine
in the beginning when it came out in 2015 it was terrific great great gas mileage unfortunately
the company that on Chrysler at that time cheated on the emissions and they killed that engine
they came back with it they was it was gone for a year they came back and the quality of it
has never been the same fuel economy has never been the same longevity has never been the same
I it just whatever they did when they stopped that engine and brought it back was not good now
the regular diesel in a three-quarter ton ram is fantastic I got no problems with it I love the
duramax I love the power stroke in three-quarter ton trucks there it's just not a bad choice
Earl I tend to go with the power stroke because I've seen them go many many miles I'd go with that
take the guesswork out of your next car lease or purchase call the car pro at 1-800-926-7777
and one of you uh I guess one of the biggest auctions out there I guess as far as the money
it brings in would be the Barrett Jackson auction in Scottsdale and in the news section
of the newsletter uh some information about that uh the Jerry put together this week the
high bidding uh vehicle was a 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR 1x Stars and Steel limited edition
a one of one yes that's pretty limited that's pretty limited 2.6 million dollars the person
bought it also chipped in another five grand gave it to the Scottsdale fire department so
it's a charity so the total 2.6 uh and five thousand other charity vehicles include a Ford
Mustang Dark Horse SE Track Pack Special Edition Ven 001 yep sold for 1.25 million and a Ford GT
that was just over half a million dollars of course all for charity gets a lot of attention I'm
sure for the the specialty cars a little too rich for my blood but always fun to read about the
prices people pay them they're what they're willing to pay for a vehicle yep that's why I put it in
there because people love to see you know what what happened especially this one because this was
Barrett Jackson Scottsdale that's their biggest auction of the year and they always have in
January and people come in from all over the country yep I'm sure Rick Hendrick bought that
Corvette he has bought more 001 serial number GM products than anybody I know by far oh to go see
his collection yeah no doubt no doubt it's it's it's an amazing collection yeah all right let's go
to the phones and we'll talk to Roman in Curvell Texas in the San Antonio area Roman welcome what
can I do for you hey Jerry hi buddy in Texas south windsboro Texas oh okay okay I got I got bad
info oh no worries no worries hey I'm retired military so thanks for all the support you do
and the VFW commander so first off hey I thank you for your service Roman I mean family tradition
anyway quick couple quick points I'm looking at the 2027 probably order and I have a king
ranch 2024 my wife has a 2024 Ranger we so we really like forwards yeah and I'm
when they'll be available order and you think they'll have a hybrid in that diesel for the F-250
because I've seen all the hybrids and I know about hybrid systems so that's my first question
and that's a good question that I don't know the answer to my gut feel with Ford
is probably not they've got that power stroke so perfected I don't know that they would risk
in their three quarter ton one ton arena that's so successful I don't know that risk
a hybrid in that Toyota figured out how to get more horsepower out of a hybrid
but I got you I don't I I don't see Ford making the investment into a hybrid diesel
in the future and I could be wrong they don't yeah I got you they keep that stuff they keep
that stuff under wraps but I just it doesn't it doesn't seem like something they would do and
I'm pretty close with Ford I know we have that on board power on both the Ranger and my truck
that's really really good oh yeah heck yeah my last question I listen to your podcast you know I've
been listening for 20 years when I first came into military in 85 I was listening to you guys but
the podcast I always try to catch them but Saturday morning I'm usually busy with traveling or
something with the VFW yeah or my my businesses I'm supporting since I retired uh do you guys
there consider about the podcasting also the first part you know we entrance your out of Dallas
as well because I really like listening to that as well yeah and we do it's the station WBAP in
Dallas handles the podcast and they they go up on Tuesday afternoon don't ask me why the the
what you're listening to now we're up by 230 central but the WBAP is up every Tuesday in their
archive there get your bed ladies and gentlemen if you're not looking at a car pro recommended dealer

you get to come back and tell these great happy listener stories for example in Houston
Reza went to Gilman Subaru Southwest and dealt with Jonathan Rochelle and said the experience
there was excellent left out quickly and smooth all the processes went in just a couple of hours
and that's what you want to hear because you've heard you probably dealt with these horror stories
at least I have of spending the entire day at a dealership when it's just not necessary to do that
yeah and they're just all they're trying to do is beat you down oh and just oversell and oversell
and this is no point in doing that I love when it's direct and you can deal with somebody in
just a few hours and you drive out happy so I love that story then there's Steve in the Dallas
Fort Worth area Alliance Hyundai's where he went and talked to Mike McLeod one of the sales guys
there was a huge help to his daughter who needed a new car highly knowledgeable not pushy very
patient walked through the process with great care grateful for Mike and the great team at
Alliance Hyundai good good good good good we we get these every single day from people who
follow my process and make no mistake it is a process you go through the website you email the
dealer you get your VIP certificate back in your inbox you tell them when you're coming in you go
and the magic starts that's right it's buying a car can be fun you don't need to be there
all day long and you can get a good deal and have a good time and doesn't get better than that
I've had more people tell me in the past 25 years that now they look forward to buying a car yeah
same here and and that that's nothing that you've heard for a long time we're gonna lose some of
you at the end of this hour coming up in about one minute but you can click listen live at carpro.com
