Well, I drive a three quarter ton forward four wheel drive on my farm down here, but
I don't always need it.
So I filled it up the other day.
It was over $100 on the fuel.
$100.
So I have a spare car.
Equinox got 190 on it.
I want to get rid of it and get me a spare vehicle to drive that's got and not wear out
my pickup.
Yeah.
And I like to get your opinion on something that gets good mileage and it don't matter
what makes it is, but I like to have good mileage and something dependable.
OK.
So you're in a small SUV.
Is it about the right size for you with the Equinox?
My, my daughter gave it to me and I just had a spare to drive around.
Wendy, but I want to get something a little bit bigger to drive around, drive around going
to Houston or Beaumont or something.
Well, will a car work for you?
Do you need an SUV?
I drive a truck and I'm used to driving up something that little I'd like to ask you
if you would be better for me.
Yeah, sounds like it.
I go get feed.
I'll pick up feed sometimes and all and I just parked my truck at the farm and I just
use that to drive around and do stuff on the highway and going to town.

All right.
So it's going to be hard to beat the Toyota RAV4 as far as long term reliability.
And if you want really good fuel economy and I'm telling people right now, don't get wrapped
up in these big gas prices.
It's temporary.
They're going to drop like a rock as soon as this war with Iran is over, which is probably
a couple of weeks away.
So don't get too wrapped up in that.
But if you really want some good fuel economy because we don't know where prices are going
in the future, we never do.
One war, one hurricane can cause prices to go through the roof.
So I'd look at the RAV4 hybrid.
If I were you, the RAV4's gotten bigger as time is going on.
It's a nice size SUV.
It's bigger than your Equinox is right now.
If you like Chevrolet's and you want to go a little bigger than Equinox, look at the
Blazer.
It's one of my very favorite SUVs, drives like a dream.
It's really, really nice.
The new Nissan Pathfinder is really good and it's very enjoyable.
And if you wanted to use it on the farm some, you could.
Their four-wheel drive system is that good.
So I would focus on those and see which one works the best for you.
I've got some really good dealers in Houston that will help you, Steve.

You're buying a car especially and you want to be making good decisions about the best
resale value that you can retain for a vehicle.
It might spend a few minutes going to the newsletter and checking out the news section
where you'll see Jerry posting the KBB 2026 best resale value award winners.
And these are recognizing vehicles for their retained value through a five-year ownership
period.
And there are some obvious winners that I'm not surprising with Toyota and Lexus the
way they hold value.
They're the best.
They're the kings of it, aren't they?
Yeah, they are.
So if you're going to be leasing a car, probably not as much of a concern I would
imagine, but if you're buying a car, good thing to keep in mind to go and check that
list out and see what your choices are.
Well, you know, if you're going to lease the best residual values and a residual value
is really just another name for resale value.
The residual value at the end, if the resale value is high, the residual value is going
to be high and the higher the residual, the lower the payment.
That makes sense.
All right, well, there you go.
It's a consideration.
Either way.
Yeah.
But yeah, I'm a big believer in resale value because you get in a car, you sign up for
five years, for instance.
Something changes in two years.
You know, people have kids or they lose their jobs or they retire or something, something
happens and they need to get out of the car.
The cars with the best resale value, obviously best, easiest to get out of in case you need
to.
And that way you won't find yourself upside down if something changes midstream there.

I was calling today to ask you.
You talked earlier about the best time to buy and about the incentives and things like
that.
What about if I want to sell?
I have a Jaguar that I want to sell back to the dealer.
Is there a time that's better than another time to approach them about that?
Not really, to be honest with you.
What kind of Jag do you have?
What year or model is it?
It's a 2011 XJL Supercharged Super Sport.
Sweet.
What a great car.
How many miles around?
About 40.
Oh, my gosh.
Let me lay the cards on the table here.
There is no dealer that's going to give you a fair price on that car.
One is its age.
They're not going to try to resell that car because of its age.
Now, the miles are spectacular, but if they put that car out on their lot to try to sell
and somebody wants to finance it, they're looking at 24-month financing.
Well, if they give you top dollar for the car, when somebody goes to look at a two-year
finance deal, the payment is going to be through the roof.
Now, there's a chance they're going to get a cash buyer, but then if it's a new car dealer
or Helen, they're going to have to stand behind that car.
Even if it doesn't matter when you're a new car dealership and you've got a good reputation,
somebody buys a car from you, you make them sign five places that they're buying it as is
with no warranty, but I swear to God, if something happens within the first few months,
they're right back to see you.
So there is a good alternative for that, and it's at my website, and it is taking a car
like that and putting it on consignment and letting people who know how to market it,
who will work hard to get you top dollar for it, and let them mess with it.
Now, the problem is they need the car, so if you've got to have a second car,
then you're going to have to buy something first and then let them have it on consignment,
but these guys are so good at what they do, and where they really shine
is they know where to market a certain kind of car.
You've got a specialty car there.
You've got a car that if somebody that wants to buy it knows what they're looking at,
will pay top dollar for it because of the miles.
Yeah, it's in wonderful condition.
So the place is called Retail My Ride.
At the top of my website, you'll see Sell A Car.
One side of it is you can get a bid on it immediately, and they'll buy it and write a check for it.
The other side of it is the Retail My Ride side where they'll take it on consignment.
This is a great consignment car to get top dollar.
They'll take a little bit off the top for their trouble, and they'll give you the rest.
You're going to pick up on a car like that.
You're likely to pick up $2,500 to $3,000 versus trading it in.
So give that some thought.
I think that's the way for you to go.
But the answer to the question is if you're going to trade it in, there's no better time.
Or sell it outright to them.
There's no better time than another at dealerships.
Don't put too much stock in what you read online about cars or trucks.

She has a leaf now that the lease is coming up in July.
And she's taking consideration getting another leaf, but buying it, not at least yet,
as well as the Kona and the Chevy Bolt.
And this seems to be pluses and minuses for all three.
So I thought I'd call and get your opinion.
Well, I tell you, I've had the new leaf.
And that was, you know, the changes that they made were a long time coming.
And I got to tell you, I wasn't a fan of the old one, but I really liked this new one.
I had the 2026.
It's got over 300 miles of range, which is great.
But what I really liked was the price and the price was exceptional.
I think it's probably the least expensive EV out there and it always has good incentives.
I had a super loaded one that was coming in at 40, just a hair over $40,000 before any discounts or rebates.
And the discounts or rebates on these are great.
So I mean, the leaf was the truly first EV that was ever sold big time in America other than Tesla.
And back when the leaf came out, Tesla wasn't really a big thing yet.
So the leaf was about all you had there for a good while.
So I mean, for me, with the changes that they made and the price point that they have, I'd for sure go with the leaf.
It's a spectacular vehicle.

What can I do for you guys?
And he had to leave for a moment, but he asked me to ask you, what do you think about buying
a hybrid car, SUV, whatever, for an 83-year-old man?
My husband is 83.
Well, Rebecca, I mean, there's no bad time to get good gas mileage, right?
So, you know, if I were, and it depends on the vehicle, if I'm buying a Toyota or a Lexus,
I'm going to get their hybrid model if they offer it.
So, in other words, if I'm looking at a Toyota Highlander and it comes hybrid or regular,
I'm going to go with the hybrid every time, not only for the fuel economy, but it also
gives you the use of extra power when you need it, like getting up on freeways and things
like that.
Now, a lot of the vehicles that are out there, their hybrids are brand new.
And I don't have the history on those that I do with Toyota because they've been building
them for 25 years.
And when I review a car and it's a hybrid, I want to see first off how much extra they
charge because it's a hybrid.
I want to see how much better the fuel economy is.
And then lastly, I want to see how seamless the transition is between hybrid and regular
gas.
So, in other words, if you feel a change in the vehicle when it switches from gas to hybrid
and back and forth because it's switching all the time.
If I can feel that, that's not a hybrid that I want.
I want a hybrid that I can't tell, but yet I'm getting the extra horsepower and I'm getting
the better fuel economy.
So, the answer is yes.
If I'm buying certain vehicles and it comes with a hybrid, I would definitely get the hybrid.
Now, I will tell you that I have over time become a big fan of the Hyundai and the Kia
hybrids and I also believe that Honda has got it perfected and it didn't used to be
that way.
But now I think the new Honda system is outstanding.
I just don't have as much confidence in any other system than Toyota and Lexus because
I've seen them go well over 200,000 miles so many times.
When I talk about reliability of a car, it's based on what people have told me.
And I've talked to a gazillion people in years time by email or by phone here during the
show and I pick up on things that they say and their trends.
I can tell you which cars will go the longest and I tell you which ones you need to get
rid of at 100,000 miles.
So, I'm still the most confident in Toyota and Lexus, but I'm also really, really, I'm
not discouraging people from buying Hyundai's Kia's and Honda's.
Okay, we are used to driving what I would call a luxury car.
When I say that, I mean we have a Mercedes coupe.
We have that as paid for, it's a 2016 or something like that and then we're driving
right now a Lincoln SUV and it has maybe 85, 90,000 miles on it.
And we're thinking about, A, should we just go down to one car, which I'm hesitant about,
but we don't really go that much.
Of course, we prefer a nicer car, but I don't want to spend the money because my husband
is retired and he's not bringing in any income.
So, do you think we need to go down to a Toyota or a Hyundai or one of those or do you think
we could get a, you know, my favorite car we've had is the Lexus?
What, do you have any suggestions?
Yeah, Rebecca, I've seen a lot of people in your position try to downsize from two cars to one
and they end up being miserable.
I'd probably keep the 2016 that you've got, the Mercedes, I would probably trade the Lincoln
and I'd trade it on a Lexus.
Look, there's nothing wrong with going, especially with Lexus, with going with a certified one
that's a couple of years old and thousands less than a brand new one.
I'd look at the RX350 if I were you.
If you find a hybrid, great.
If you don't, though, the gasoline, no more than y'all are going to be driving.
The gasoline engine is fantastic.
Take a look at that.

and it affects me for sure allergies.
And the question is, are allergies riding shotgun in your car?
Oh, boy.
This time of year, you know, all the yellow stuff in the air and the weather going back
and forth, it is just wreaking havoc on me.
And I'm sure a lot of people have the same issue.
Oh, I guarantee you they do, especially this time of year.
And with that being said, you know, you start to think, well, I smell something musty in
the car.
The car is the car giving me.
Is it the atmosphere rather giving me allergies or could it be something in the car?
And an important thing, which you actually turned me on to this years ago.
I'll just give show one give on this article, the cabin air filter.
Yeah.
Changing that out every time they ask you to do it when it's time is so stinking important
to do.
Yeah.
You know, about 5000 miles seems to be the time for allergy people who suffer with allergies
that, you know, they start to get pollen and things in there.
I mean, it really makes a difference.
Yeah, it really does.
And so I give you a lot of good tips on that, but I recommend it.
And if you some cars are real easy to change the cabin air filter.
Others.
I mean, it's behind the glove box and you got to tear all this stuff out to get to it.
That's one you want to let a professional do.
100%.
But I promise you this.
If you look online on YouTube.
For your car, unless you've got a really old or really weird car, you'll find out.
You'll find a tutorial video of how to do it yourself.
Oh, OK.
And you can buy the air filters at the parts house and change it yourself.
Yeah.
Those videos will also tell you if you shouldn't change it yourself and you'll know.
I mean, we all have different levels of skill when it comes to working on cars.
Mine is the lowest you can ever imagine.
You know, mine's not great anymore.
Yeah, it used to be able to do it, but I wouldn't.
There's very few cars I would ever put a wrench on today.
If you're tearing out half the dash to get to something and you're not handy with it,
then you shouldn't be doing it.
And getting somebody to fix what you screwed up is more expensive than doing it.
Having them do it the first time.
Yeah, that's true.
Always.
That never fails.

Well, are you going to keep this minivan as long as you kept that Highlander?
Sir, yes, sir.
Go with the Sienna then.
The Toyota Sienna is to me still the best one out there.
I like the Odyssey, but the quality on the Odyssey through the years has been spotty.
And I hate that, but you know, the Sienna has always just been great.
All the Siennas now, they're all hybrids and they're all all wheel drive, which is great
for where you live.
So I definitely go with the Sienna.
Now, I'll tell you the nicest minivan?
Yes, sir.
What's the nicest one?
The Kia.
The Carnival.
The Kia Carnival.
Yeah.
Wow.
It is amazing.
And you get a 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty with that.
And it's cheaper up front.
But I don't know that it's going to last you 20 years like the Sienna will.
So if you can, if you start, look, you guys start talking, start thinking about, well,
you know, we got the kids are going to be grown and out of the house in the next 10 years.
I'd look at a carnival, but for longevity, look at the Toyota.
It's the best.

And don't wrap your brain around that real quick.

Made an appointment for the next day.
We were in.
She was driving a brand new Trailblazer out in under three hours.
I mean, that's really about the average two or three hours.
If you go through the process and you know what you want, they get you set up.
And when you get there, once you test drive it, you go through the process and say, okay,
I want it and boom, you're out in a few hours.
That's a pretty good little experience.
Yeah, it is.
And you want it.
This is not something you really want to rush.
What you want.
What you want to go fast is getting the numbers set and getting through finance.
But what you don't want to rush is the test drive.
