A hybrid car runs on both gas and electric power. It has a battery that stores electricity, so it can drive part of the time using only the battery and save gas.
This is a newer version of the Toyota Highlander that uses both gasoline and electric power to save gas. It’s like a regular SUV but it can run on battery power for part of the drive, so you use less fuel.
The Palisade is a big family car that can seat up to eight people. It’s comfortable, has lots of safety gadgets, and is cheaper than many other SUVs that look similar.
It’s the part of your car that tells you how many miles you can drive on one gallon of gas. It uses information from the engine and speed to estimate fuel usage.
An electric vehicle is a car that uses batteries and motors instead of gasoline. It doesn’t need gas, so it can be cheaper to run and better for the environment.
Incentives are discounts or special offers that help people buy cars more cheaply. For electric cars, governments sometimes give money back or lower taxes to make them cheaper.
Fuel stabilizer is a liquid you pour into your gas tank to keep the fuel fresh. It helps stop the gasoline from going bad if you leave a car parked for months.
The Audi Q5 is a small SUV that feels like a car on the road. It’s popular for its comfy seats, good handling, and plenty of space for passengers and cargo.
The ZR2 is a special version of the Ford Ranger truck that’s built for off‑road adventures. It has extra protection and a strong engine to pull heavy loads.
The Yukon is a big truck‑style car that can pull heavy trailers and has plenty of space for passengers. It’s more upscale than some other large SUVs but costs a bit more.
The Civic is a small, everyday car that runs well and doesn’t cost much to keep running. The 2015 version is still a good choice for people who want a reliable and affordable ride.
The Escape is a small SUV that’s easy to drive and doesn’t use much gas. The new model with the 2‑liter EcoBoost engine is a good balance of power and fuel savings.
The Optima is a mid‑size car that can seat five people comfortably. The 2020 Turbo model has a small turbo engine that gives it a bit more punch than the regular version.

A Tibetan throat singer.
What is that?
I don't even.
I have no.
I guess they home.
Home.
I guess doing that.
I don't know.
Yeah.
The things that the Mr. announcer comes up with.
And we never know what they are.
No.
No.
And you don't even write these.
No.
Nobody else writes these things.
Yeah.
No clue.
We hear them at the same time you do.
We really do.
And we're really enjoying them.
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
You more than me maybe.
No.
I enjoy him too.
Well, I pay the bills.
So he only says nice stuff about me.
Well, he knows how the pecan order goes.
Well, yeah.
And one of us is in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and the other is not.
True.
So there's that.
I mean, I sort of, speaking of standing in your lane, I sort of understand that.
Yeah.
I was going to mention, you had a really nice message on Facebook regarding the brother
who passed away at the lady that was included in the newsletter.
The folks in Dallas probably didn't hear that unless they were listening live on there.
But what I may mention is Sue.
She, she was on Facebook and said a real nice message for you.
You responded to her.
I did.
Yeah.
She, I think Sue's a loyal listener.
She's like, she's like me.
That email got to her.
Yeah.
I mean it.
Yeah.
It was so touching.
It was.
You know, I've been blessed to have a lot of those through the years and that's why I wrote
the closing message because when you're in radio, you don't always think about what impact
you have on people.
And I know I certainly didn't, you know, my whole majority of my career was in the car
business, owning car dealerships and running car dealerships and all the way back to washing
cars at a car dealership.
And then started this radio thing, sort of a hobby and that was 24 years ago and you
know, he just, it's easy to take for granted that you touch people sometimes and you don't
even know it.
And then occasionally they take the time to tell you and it's very sobering, it's very
humbling.
It is.
And it, it's certainly, you know, we spent, you, we, you spend a ton of time every week
with the show, maintaining it, the newsletter, all the information and you know, this is
something that is in your wheelhouse so to speak and you've, you've been in this industry
and you love it.
But when you're able to make a connection like that, sometimes it's just, certainly number
one tells you what's most important and brings it all home and number two, sometimes folks
need a diversion from real life.
And for those two, especially in that letter, this is what the show was for them.
Yeah.
And I had another case this week with a lady that her father was a listener and he was
just about, I mean, his time is very short.
I mean, we're talking about hospice here.
And she wanted to know if I had anything I could share with him that would be reminiscent
of the station or the show or something.
And then I had a book that I gave her and with the caveat that I got the book back because
it was, it's a book, the special to me, but I loaned it to her so that she could show
it to her dad in his final few days.
Wow.
Just unbelievable.

That's thechase.com carpro hotline.
And I do have a line open a real rarity 800 926 7777.
And we go to Mike in Southern California.
Mike, what's going on, my friend?
Oh, not much.
Cintra, have me a question.
So my wife's in the market for a new 2025 Toyota Highlander hybrid.
Yeah, the question is, is it worth the additional money to buy the hybrid?
Because we've heard like in five or 10 years, the battery cannot much drive.
They start to wear out.
And that's our main thing holding us back to both the hybrid and get the standard model.
Well, the hybrid battery in a Toyota is always good to well over 200,000 miles.
So how long do y all usually drive a car before you get rid of one?
We keep them quite a while, but 200,000.
Drake, I've heard on average, they get about 10 years to 100,000 miles.
So you can safely save as long as you drive it in a decent fashion.
It'll last close to 200,000.
Some of some of the hybrid batteries do last 100,000.
But with the Toyota, the number I've arrived at from experience and talking
to people is 225.
And I've seen them with my own two eyes go over 300,000 miles.
So as long as we're talking Toyota, heck, yeah,
that will that will certainly pay for itself.
And I will tell you this, the other thing you get
with Toyota's hybrid besides better fuel economy is increased horsepower.
And, you know, for me, if I can get better gas mileage
and the car will go faster, that's a real plus, plus for me.
Now, I just I'm driving right now.
It's setting downstairs a Hyundai
Palisade, hybrid, and it's the same way.
If you go from the six cylinder to the hybrid,
you pick up from 280 to 329 horses
and you pick up nine miles per gallon.
So for a 15,000 mile a year driver,
in three years, the hybrid system is paid for.
And I would suspect the numbers would crunch out
very similar to that with the Toyota.
I'll tell you right now, and I've said it a hundred times on this show.
If I'm looking at a Toyota or I'm looking at a Lexus
and they offer it in a hybrid, I'm going to get the hybrid.
I've got great Toyota dealers at my website, Mike.

The number one click item in this week's newsletter
has to do with an advice column that you wrote.
You said it took a while to come up with
all kinds of folks asking you about this kind of thing along the way.
You said it's time to go and write something about it.
I mean, and.
I found I finally found enough common reasons.
That everybody could relate to to write that article.
Yeah, I've been wanting to write that for years and same with the one
coming up next Friday how to tell or why why does your car's
MPG computer read out.
Why is it never right?
That's crazy to think about this to me.
That should that should be regulated or at least standardized or something.
People want to take that as the gospel that their car says they're getting
24.3 miles per gallon and it's a good chance.
It's not even close.
We've been fed a pack of lies all these years.
Well, and then about two weeks ago.
My advice column on another weird topic.
Because I am trying to I'm trying to add content to the F.A.Q.
page. I mean, like a hundred questions in enough.
But I think the that advice column was about.
Can you trust your all monitor gauge?
Yeah, yeah, because now.
Instead of it being 5000 miles or 7500 miles with a lot of these cars,
it tells you when you need to change your oil.
Yeah, they'll keep reminding you, believe me.
Oh, yes, it will.
Yes, it will.
And my research showed.
Yeah, buying large.
That's reliable.
Yeah.
Oh, OK.
Good to know.
Chuck Barstow, California.
Chuck, what's going on, my friend?
Oh, hi, Joey.
I'm glad to talk to you.
You know, I've been considering buying a truck for a long time.
I'm getting on an agent.
It's going to be my last vehicle.
Oh, no.
So I heard right.
I heard the gentleman talk about King Ranch Ford.
And me, I'm on the other end of the spectrum.
Low budget, basic work truck is so all I need.
It's something for garden supplies and whatnot.
The trucks, even the basic work truck is close to $40,000.
And that's for tax and license here.
Oh, yeah.
Boy, it's terrible.
Yeah.
But I heard some struggle, but about maybe Ford's considering
bringing back the F-100, you know, a slightly smaller,
cheaper vehicle with more basic features, maybe a little more analog.
And, you know, just, just, you know, the old school pickup truck
that most of us, most of us, old folks can goodbye with.
And I was just wondering if you heard anything about that.
And then if it's not coming out, what would be the next best for me?
OK. I appreciate you.
You're welcome, sir.
There is a rumor.
It's not confirmed with Ford.
And I don't know if it's true or not.
But Ford is going to come with a inexpensive electric truck.
And they are going around calling it the F-100.
I don't know that they will.
I kind of doubt it.
I think in your particular situation for what you want.
I think the Maverick is the truck for you.
And I would.
How many miles a year about do you drive?
Chuck.
Oh, I do about about 12000.
And, you know, being out here in the sticks.
Electric is no no way to go here.
And I like going out in the country.
What I was electric just.
Yeah, no, I get it. I don't blame you.
I my my concern was for you.
Get a Maverick.
And should you get the hybrid or the non hybrid?
At 12000 miles a year, I'd get the hybrid
because it will get you 40 miles to the gallon realistically.
And it'll pay for itself in a short period of time.
And you can get one of those about 35 grand.
And I think that's your best bet.
I really do.
There's nothing better out there.
Nothing is quite as disappointing as getting a new car.
Then not liking it 30 days later.
So before you buy, call the Carpro Show.
1-800-926-7777.
Teresa en Belleville, Texas.
Welcome. Hi, Teresa.
Hello.
What can I help you with? Can you hear me?
Yeah.
Yes, sir. Thank you.
You anyway, I'm in a store now, and I have to find a description.
I'm talking about.
Hold on, just a minute.
I'm sorry.
I've been preparing for a while.
I'm sorry.
That's all right.
Just a second.
OK, I think this lady may be in the process of selling this already,
but a local lady, I talked to you a couple of weeks ago
or more that I have a Lexus CS350.
Yeah.
And I need something re-soldering.
But maybe I would just get a second vehicle.
But this is a 2012,
and it's old Acura MDX Advanced Package Support Utility.
But it's got 163,000 miles on it.
And that's my concern.
I'm always in the market for a lower mileage.
Yeah, that's a good one.
That's a great SUV.
Do you.
So do you know the person that's had it?
I don't know her personally,
but I mean, I'm familiar with her like on Facebook and stuff like I be.
I think I've messaged her before and stuff.
She's a local person.
But somebody's already looking at it right now,
like I couldn't do it yesterday because I had to work.
But I kind of guess I just.
So it's a good vehicle,
but mileage wise, I'm just wondering.
I know it just depends on the situation,
like maintenance.
Yeah, many miles, they will last.
And it depends a lot on
how well she's maintained at all these years.
If it's if she says she doesn't have.
She bought it used from somebody else
and she doesn't have maintenance records, which is concerning.
Yeah, it is.
Y what's she asking for?
It's a pretty good price.
She was asking seven.
Now she's asking sixty five hundred.
Yeah, I think it's worth the risk.
Acura is just a fancy Honda
and Honda is known for for long term reliability.
You know, if it's been halfway maintained,
there could be another seventy five
thousand miles in that thing.
It wouldn't surprise me to see it make two fifty.
So for for that kind of money.
Yeah, I think it's a good risk.
If it were more than that,
you might even go to six, but somebody else might buy it.
Yeah, that's how it goes.
But if you wouldn't, then it wasn't meant to be.
Yeah, that's right.
And if you wave six, a six
thousand dollar check in front of her,
it might make a huge difference.
I think it's a good buy there.
I really do.
And I think you'll get a good amount
of miles in front of you.
So I'd say pull the trigger if you can.
I hope it works out.
Thanks for calling, Torica.

Y.
Entonces, justo, la noticia.
Ya.
I mean, September was the best month in electric vehicle history
and October flipped around is probably going to be the worst.
Ya, because the incentives went away and, you know,
the money went away and boom, there you go.
Ya, there you go.
Ya, let's talk to Brad in Florida.
Brad, what can I help you with, sir?
Hello, here's the scenario, actually two scenarios.
Plug in hybrid and the daily commute
doesn't require a visit to the gas station.
And then a car that sits season six months out of the year
and is driven a couple hundred miles, use fuel stabilizer.
How in a plug in hybrid
is it truly never visit the gas station
or should you run that gas down occasionally?
Ya, that's a really good question and I did.
I did research this one time.
Is out of question as it is, you're the second one.
What my research showed if you're going to leave
a plug in hybrid setting for a long periods of time.
To there's two things you do and one of them
is make sure that the range,
the hybrid battery range is no more than 50 percent.
Charged and Toyota, Toyota guy,
told me that at 50 percent charge,
there'll be enough power to drive it when you come back.
But if you if it's too full, it could harm the battery.
So.
His suggestion and he knew the system
like nobody I've ever talked to, he said,
leave leave the hybrid system, half charged
and disconnect the regular battery, the one under the hood.
So and and it'll it'll perform great.
I think a fuel stabilizer
and we didn't talk about that part of it,
but I think that would be a good choice
because and you're going to you.
It's going to cycle on at some point in the future
and the longer it says, whether you're driving it
or on battery or not,
that gas is going to get into the system.
And if it's super old, it's going to gum things up.
That's just the way it works.
So I do all those.
World.
No, when you're, you know, not not maintenance or mechanical,
what's super old or what, you know, in gas life?
What what's your fuel life?
A year, a year.
OK, that helps.
And, you know, if the car does the car set in Florida.
So I have I have a Q5
that is just a regular car that sits for several months
that is in Florida and I use stabilizer
and it's it started and driven, you know,
once a month, 10 miles or so.
Yeah. But we never go through the fuel.
And then the other one I was curious about
because I'm I'm thinking about a plug in hybrid
and that that never, you know, I work in I.T.
So those these very specific word of never,
you know, to me never means never.
Right. Right.
That's why that's why the question came up.
That's a good one. It's a good one.
I'm glad I'm glad I had researched that one other time.
So, yeah, I think I think you'd be fine
with the plug in hybrid.
And if if you, you know, if you have a short commute
and that's what I tell people who are getting plug ins,
you got a short commute.
You you really truly won't go to a gas station.
But at some point you're going to go further than the range.
And then that gas makes then that gas is going to come into play.
So, yeah, I think that's the right answer.
I appreciate the call, my friend. Brad, thanks for listening.
Joe in Fort Worth, Texas.
Hello, Joe.
Hello, I'm looking at a ZR2
with a diesel engine in it.
Yeah.
That's a 1500 series, three liter diesel.
Right.
I've been driving a three
quarter ton with the big diesel
and I've heard some things about the rear main seal,
leaking oil and excessive oil consumption
on a three liter.
Is any of that true?
Not that I know of.
That three liter has been incredibly.
Reliable and trouble free.
And I mean, there's a ton of them on the market.
You it's not.
It doesn't only just come in the pickups,
but there's a lot of the escalades
and Tahos and Yukon's that have that same engine.
I if I were buying a big
Gerald Mutter's SUV or if I were buying a pickup,
that's exactly the engine I would get.
I wouldn't hesitate with it.
So if you know, if you get online
and you look and you you look for trouble
with any car that's ever been built,
you'll find it online.
I promise you,
but you got to keep things in perspective.
Only the people who have an issue.
Post that stuff.
And for every one of those,
there's probably 100,000 people
who have the same vehicle
that have had zero problems.
So no, I've never heard
a negative word from anybody
that had the three liter engine.
It has been terrific.
En el último que he revisado,
tengo 29 kilómetros a la gallina
en un truco de 4WD.
Y yo estaba atrapado a la muerte.
Bueno, eso es un buen comentario.
Entonces, cuando estoy
listo para traer este truco de carros,
no estoy emocionado por el precio.
No me he escuchado
que el año pasado daba otro lugar
para verlo.

Certainly there's good reason.
They're the number one Chevy dealer

Well, it'll be three years this year.
And they're going to make it again.
I can tell already.
But yeah, Joe, don't worry
about that three liter.
It's been great.
No issues whatsoever.

Well, this week as I'm walking
into the carpro show,
Jerry is getting out of the car
that he's driving to review this week,
which is a Hyundai Palisade calligraphy.
Is that right?
The hybrid, beautiful vehicle
and on average,
you average one to two a week
and a lot of weeks is two.
So my question is,
do you know what you're driving next,
especially to review?
I know one of them of the two.
One of them is the 2026 Toyota Crown
Nightshade. Nightshade.
Yeah, it's the sport model
of the four door sedan.
Oh, that'll be nice to drive.
It's a sedan, obviously,
and not a SUV or truck,
so it'll give you something different.
Thank goodness.
Because you probably drive
all the trucks and SUVs out there.
Yeah, everything's a truck or SUV
that I'm reviewing.
That's all they want you to talk about.
But luckily, Toyota's still in the car business.
Thank goodness.
Yeah, thank goodness, somebody is.
Yeah, right.
Let's talk to Kitty in Sacramento.
Kitty, welcome.
How can I help you?
Hi, Jerry.
Thanks so much for taking my call.
You're so welcome.
I have been retired
for about a year and a half
going through the transition period.
And a lot of things have changed
since I made all of my retirement plans.
For one thing,
the cost of everything is increased dramatically.
And I had wanted to do a lot of traveling,
but I needed a more economic way to travel
since airfare and everything has gone up so much.
And I decided I should hit the road
and I'm looking for recommendations
on what kind of vehicle would be good
for being on the road
and hauling a small,
some kind of small camping unit.
I currently have a 2015 Honda Civic
that I would be looking to trade in.
And I'd like to know if it would be better to get,
if I would come out ahead
getting with something used rather than new.
So I'm just I'm looking for recommendations.
Well, here's the problem.
Until you decide
on what kind of camper you're going to pull,
we really can't make any decisions
on what to pull it with
because I don't want I don't want you to
underpower yourself
with a vehicle.
So I'm going to get something small.
It's it's just me and my pets.
So I'm looking for just something small.
Are you thinking travel trailer
or are you thinking more on the tent trailer side?
Probably tent trailer,
possibly a very small travel trailer.
But it's it's going to be more for like one night
here and there, like en route.
I'll be stopping at some kind of a,
you know, a camping facility
to spend the night.
I'm not going to be spending
extended period of time in it.
And you're not going to try to go
to Lake Tahoe in it, pulling the trailer, right?
Right, right.
Well, it's only to get out of California
over the mountain.
All right.
If you go with a tent trailer.
That's going to weigh
three thousand pounds or less.
Typically. OK.
And you're probably not going to
if you're only going to do one
Z's and twosies as far as overnight's,
you're probably not going to have it loaded up
with a whole bunch of stuff
because you're only staying a day or two.
So you don't need, you know,
a week's worth of groceries
and a week's worth of butane.
And OK.
So in that case,
I would tell you to look
at a new Ford Escape
with the two liter EcoBoost engine.
That's going to give you a 3500 pounds
of towing.
It's going to get really good gas mileage
when you're not towing.
And it'll get if you wanted to go
to Tahoe, you could, even though
that's a pretty deep, pretty hard grade
of driven it.
But go over and see Rachel Woods.
She's one of the owners at Elk Grove Ford
in the Elk Grove Auto Mall
and Drive in Escape.
I think that's your answer.
The car pro show can make you the smartest person
on the block about buying a new car.
Call Jerry Reynolds, the car pro
at 1-800-926-7777.
Ray and Laguna Beach,
you got the last word, buddy.
What can I help you with?
All right, hi, Jerry.
Caller, I love your show.
Thank you, man.
Yeah, I can always listen to the car talk
from the born and raised in the motor city.
Yeah.
In this case, I got a buddy in the car business.
He got me a Kia Optima 2020 Turbo
and I got a great deal.
I couldn't pass up on it.
But I'm thinking about selling it.
I hear there's some oil issues with that car.
I got 63,000 on it right now.
What would you recommend?
It'll make trying to get some money out of the used car
at 60,000 or 80 or 100,000.
And then if you do recommend to sell it soon, then.
I like that type of car, you know,
four door sedan, that is the K5.
All right.
Yeah.
All right, let me let me let me answer your questions
because this segment is kind of short
and I don't want to short you on information.
I don't see any reason to get rid of the Optima
at this time with 63,000 miles.
I'd keep driving it, especially as high
as new car prices are.
I try to get another 40,000 out of it.
I would trade it just prior to 100,000 miles.
And yeah, the Kia K4 and the Kia K5
are both exceptional vehicles.
I love them both.
If you need a little more room
than what you've got the K5, we'll do that for you.
But I don't see any reason to do anything right now.
Those have been good cars.
You know, yeah, you're going to find some things online
about their history, but that means nothing.
You can't there's no way to verify that info.
So drive it for a while and then let's talk again.
It's easy to see a commercial and think, I'd like that car.
But before you buy or lease,
call Jerry Reynolds at the CarPro Show, 1-800-926-7777.
