Welcome back to the podcast today. A 30% increase for the European EV market. Volvo's long-range EV coach and Mercedes-Benz VLE gets closer.

Plus stay tuned because later in the show I'll reveal what milestone number the number of power trains that ampares plant and play on in France has now produced.

Volvo kicks us off in the news today, introducing a coach chassis derived from its 600 volt BZR electric bus platform.

And this has a 720 kilowatt hour battery. It's just eaten all of the batteries designed for ranges up to 435 miles or 700 kilometers.

The first units have been reserved for customers in the Nordic countries. The company first used the BZR architecture on their electric buses introduced about 1.5 years ago.

The models then used a battery capacity of 540 kilowatt hours. The new chassis extends it way beyond 700.

The BZR platform uses 90 kilowatt hour modules at a time. They come from Volvo trucks, which are different to Volvo cars.

They use the NCA chemistry. The coach chassis accepts 4 to 8 of the modules.

So you can spec it 360 kilowatt hours if you want to use your bus around town and do some decent longer journeys as well.

After 435 miles of traveling in a bus, I think I want to get off and stretch my legs or do some business.

And so that's just another bit of transport. Just get a big tick off the list with huge long-range coach travel.

But it's coach travel really isn't it? The chassis are either 9.5 to 15 meters. That's about 31 to 50 foot.

Drive train options are the 200 or 400 kilowatts of power. Volvo says the chassis will be offered with bodies from different body builders,

depending on the market and the customer needs. That's really interesting. I love stories like this.

Not necessarily a car that you and I will ever be driving, but hey, I'd love to give it a go.

I can ask Volvo if I can play with their new bus, maybe not.

Right, Mercedes Benz is next in the news. Their plant in Vittoria has begun production of the first pre-series units of the all-electric VLE.

Series production is on target for 2026. This site was extensively modernised to support the program.

From next year, the plant will manufacture mid-size vans built on their van.ea.

Platform vehicles based on the van combustion architecture, van.ea will also be produced at the facility in the future.

Now, to begin with, in 2026, the Vittoria plant will assemble the all-electric VLE.

The V-Class, the V2 and the EV2. We'll get a full reveal of the VLE next year,

but in the meantime, Mercedes Benz say the fully-electric VLE brings the best of two worlds together.

It combines limousine like driving behaviour, an MPV-like versatility.

The focus is primarily on the added value of customers, which is of central importance to Mercedes Benz,

so as the press release. Regarding design, variability and everyday suitability,

the VLE will optimally meet the needs and requirements of customers.

With up to eight seats, the whole portfolio and range will be flexible vehicles for families,

customers with active lifestyles, shuttles, things like that. They say a very flexible new vehicle.

All-electric VLE we should, I think, early part of 2026, see a full reveal of this.

I think, well, Premier, I think the latest is first half of 2026,

so they're giving themselves plenty of wiggle room.

On that one, all right, moving forward, new electro-tapac technology could be the next thing

that helps our EVs get better. 24M technologies has introduced their electro-tapac

a packaging method that says it will raise EV range by up to 50%,

by increasing the energy density. The more cells that you can get in a space,

the farther your EV will go. Instead of separate cells and modules,

the electro-tapac technology seals cathode anode pairs in thin polymer films and integrates those

sealed electro-pares directly into the pack. 24M says this fixes the main inefficiency

in the current lithium ion pack technology, where much of the pack volume is taken by

just stuff that isn't storing energy, supporting materials, metals, plastics, cell casings.

Typical battery packs have electrodes that make up about 30% to 60% of pack volume.

ETOP, they say, will raise it to 80% of pack volume.

It's chemistry agnostic, so it'll work with NMC, LFP, NCA, sodium ion, other chemistries as well.

As an example, a 75 kilowatt hour NMC pack in a mid-size EV could be increased to over 100

kilowatt hours in the same physical footprint space using the same chemistry, so a 33% increase.

Or you could go to LFP technology, which is cheaper and in some circumstances better.

Beyond higher energy density, this new electrode to pack technology offers more geometric and

electrical flexibility. The sealed electrode elements can be arranged in series in parallel,

800-volt architectures, all the rest. No detail on when you and I'll go and buy a car with this,

but I love things like this that signal how quickly the world of EV is moving now.

Let's talk a little bit about solid-state batteries. A research team at the Worcester

Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts is tackling performance and manufacturing problems in solid-state

batteries. They address the incompatibility between solid-state electrolytes and lithium

metal anodes, a problem usually fixed by adding protective interlayers, but it adds cost when

you do that and complexity. This new team, what they said is doped the lithium ion chloride with

ion to make a modified electrolyte. I won't pretend I fully understand this. However, it does mean

that the cells using this new technique, they did more than 300 charge discharge cycles at 80%

of their initial capacity. So it's working in the lab, work to do here, but another move forward

in solid-state batteries. Really interesting, isn't it? So BP Pulse and Motto are next in the news,

rolling out truck charging hubs here in the UK. BP Pulse, the EV charging division of BP,

has partnered with the UK's largest Motowace services operator, they're called Motto,

to introduce high-powered truck charges of Motowace service areas. They plan 300 charging

bays in 23 locations completed by the end of the decade. Each site will include six pull-through

bays fitted with megawatt charging system compatible charges, they'll put CCS and MCS in.

The first three Motowocations are going to be limb, totting to north and south.

And the first one opening next year, BP Pulse saying the partnership will focus on primary Motowace

corridors as part of an effort to build the truck hubs across the trans-European transport

network. The UK segment of that network is the M25, M1, M4, M5, M6, M20. If you live here,

you may know those roads. One installation will be at a large truck stop in Ashford,

in Kent. That's important because that's where we cross the border to go to mainland Europe,

and we're equally in reverse as well. And so, very important work doing there to electrify

all the things that we talk about all the time. Let electrify working vehicles because they're

often the dirtiest and contribute multiple times than stressing over the last person on your

street to get rid of their petrol diesel car. This is a really important work that's being done.

So well done. And obviously, BP wants to make some money out of this. And investing.

Now, research from the EV charging tech company EZ finds UK EV drivers could save more than

168 million pounds a year, not individually, but collectively by switching to smart energy tariffs,

which surprised me because is there anybody driving an EV that's not on a good energy tariff?

But I think what they mean by this is, well, they looked at 1.6 million EV owners and reported

that 28% of them charge during peak periods. That is either 8am to 11am or 4pm to 10pm.

Their analysis estimates that shifting to off-peak charging on a smart tariff would save drivers

between 265 and almost 400 pounds annually, depending on your charging. For drivers charging,

28 kilowatt hours per week, you would save 265 pounds a year. But if you do more miles, you save

more money. Easy highlighting that smart EV tariffs can go down to like seven pence. I pay with

Octopus intelligent go. And if you have an EV, it's kind of unthinkable that you would be just on

the standard tariff. You'd at least be on a cheap overnight rate. And if not hot, if you are the

last person to do it, give your energy supplier a call today and get it done. I have got an Octopus

I forget to give it out or put it in the show notes. I will. If you are not on an Octopus smart

tariff and it works brilliantly for me, by the way, I've got the zappy version too on the wall,

get it long in the tooth now. Look at me. It works for worse and outdoor unit. It needs to replace

that at some point. Hey, Octopus do their own wall box now. I should have a look at that. And

also, you know, combined with the pole star two, I've got it charging right now. And what is

this? I'm recording this now at 12.56 on Friday lunchtime, early afternoon. And my electricity

just flicked onto cheap rate for a couple of hours while I'm charging the car, which is just brilliant.

I'll take a little break by the look of my app. Then it comes on at 9 p.m. this evening and then

you know, all overnight as well. And so that's the whole house. So mental note, when I finish

recording this, go and put the dishwasher on. Right, let's talk about another energy company,

Ovo. They've introduced something called charge anytime. They call it the UK's first EV charging

subscription. So home and public charging for one fee with this work for you. They go on sale

on November the 4th. The standard plan is 27 pounds 50 a month. They said they'll save EV drivers

though hundreds of pounds a year. There's a premium plan of 37 pounds 50. So amongst current EV

drivers, Ovo say that 80% so that charging can be overly complicated pointing to differences

between home and public charging costs. Standard subscribers will receive what they say 700 miles

of smart home charging per month. Public charging vouchers valid across 400,000 charges.

An insurance cover for accidental damage theft or vandalism. I would need to go and have another

look at this because it sounds complicated because how do you give certain amounts of miles per month

whenever EV is different efficiency? So maybe you have to say what EV you drive.

Okay. Well, in that case, I'll just pick a really, really inefficient one, a terrible, terrible one

and just cannot tell the truth to Ovo and then get more killer what hours as it were.

Because if you say that, oh, I had a Tesla, this is really efficient and they're giving you 700

miles of electricity of smart home charging per month. Well, you're not going to get as many

kilowatt hours for free as part of your 27 pounds per month subscription than if you drive something

that is, I don't know, a bus. So maybe look more into this because it sounds like they've complicated

things unnecessarily. Why isn't it in kilowatt hours? Why have they given it in miles? It's really

weird. Premium subscribers paying the extra 10 pounds a month get a thousand miles of electricity per

month and they get an annual battery health check and stuff like that. But okay, I would prefer it

in kilowatt hours, you know what? I just, I'm a simpleton. I like the octopus thing. I plug my car

in the whole house goes cheap at certain hours of the day and my whole house is cheap overnight as

well when we always do our washing and things like that. So and in the day I got solar electricity. So

in the summer months, I don't worry about it, but interesting innovation there from Ovo will take a

break or come back. We'll talk about European registrations. Who's up? Who's down? And what's

about the August numbers. So we are looking at the EU. So the European Union plus the EFTA countries.

That sounds fascinating, doesn't it? So Iceland, Norway, Switzerland,

Liechtenstein, plus the United Kingdom. Well, this is getting complicated. But anyway,

basically, I'm going to call it the European numbers. All right. And that's largely a casual

issue. So the car makers association is called the ACEA. And they put the data out. It's really

helpful. And they've got the August numbers now that we're at the end of September. And everything's

in the books. And it's a 30% increase on EV registrations compared to August last year. If you're

confused, so am I. And we always being told by the media that all the great EV experiment is over,

nobody wants to buy EVs anymore. This is a market that went up 30% year-on-year. A lot of businesses

would kill for those kind of increases. Year-to-date, well above the same time last year. What about the

overall car market? It edged down. So hold on, hold on. I'm confused. In a market of any business,

right? If the market place that you're trading in is declining, the car market August to August

declined in the European area. But EVs were up 30%. That sounds like a good business to be in.

But all the car makers, when they have to readjust all the ones that haven't got great EVs for sale

and they haven't to, I don't know, they do layoffs or readjust their factories and stuff,

the reason they're given. Oh, there's no demand for EVs. Oh, okay. All right. Well, we believe

you. Introducing or including EVs from all of those EFTA countries in the UK as well. It's

160,000 electric cars in August. So who was doing well? Germany, 40,000 bevs, pure bevs in August.

That's up 45% August to August. The UK, 22,000 bevs, up 15%, France, 17,000 bevs, up 30%, Norway,

13,500, pure bevs, up 30%. Belgium, 9,000 bevs, Netherlands, 9,000, Spain had an amazing August,

160% up from August last year. What a terrible business to be in in a market that's going up

160% year to year. And we're not looking at month to month here. It's year on year dates. It's

pretty robust to do this. And you can look at quarterly or year to date data and have a bigger

sample size. The EV market is increasing really quickly, 30% overall. And in some countries,

160% in Spain, but they can't be true. Because we're always being told there's no demand for EVs

anymore. For the first eight months of the year, the EU itself, European Union recorded 1.132

million new bear registrations. That's a European Union increase of 25% on the same eight months.

Last year, overall car market share, a bigger picture for the first eight months of the year,

16%. Obviously within that, you've got the UK on 25% heading to 30% and you've got your

Norway's that are about 100%. So within that, but the overall 16%. Hey, where we are in the

journey, over the next 20, 30 years of mobility moving electric, that's an amazing bit of progress.

Well, I don't know. I don't know where the headlines come from. I've got a fair idea. You

can ignore those. The data tells us the true story. Mercedes-Benz is next in the news. They're going

to buy a minority state in a Chinese autonomous driving company backed by Glee called Qianli.

Glee is one of Chinese, China's biggest auto-making groups, ninth best selling auto group in the

world last year. Mercedes leads, they say an advanced drive resistance systems because they're the

first European automaker to sign off level three, which is hands off eyes off, where the car maker

takes on the liability for the autonomous driving in certain roads happening in Europe and the US

as well. A few years ago, Glee put all of its autonomous driving assets into its Qianli

subsidy, and now Mercedes-Benz is investing in that long relationship between Mercedes-Benz and

Glee in terms of investment either way as well. So that is great. Also, the new C-Class talking

inside EV's writer, Andre Nadella, has been talking about the camouflage Mercedes-Benz C-Class

EV prototypes while driving through the Italian Alps, several prototypes. I think he shot the

pictures himself by the look of it, showed production bodies, production taillights like the recently

revealed GLC EV and the light up Mercedes-Benz stars as well. From the side, lacks the long hood of

the current combustion model, the A-Pillar sits closer to the front wheel, giving proportions,

more like a front wheel drive, sedan, more like a larger CLA, and that's a good thing. The prototype

appears to have a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs than the combustion cars. The front uses

the grille shown on the electric GLC and the one teased for the C-Class EV. So this looks like

production-ready prototypes, doing that testing, 800-volt MBEA platform used by the GLC, likely

sharing you would think, probably some very similar power and charging specifications. GLC

itself is rated for 330 kilowatts peak. The C-Class is probably going to match that figure,

we would think it's lower, sleeker, it'll probably go better than the GLC. So the GLC's

WLTP at 443 miles. So what, the new C-Class? 500 miles? It's a nice number in it. It's a big

number, 500 miles, 800 kilometers. They hit that. Wow, game over. Now, Sunrun in partnership with

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, activating what it calls the nation's first residential vehicle

to grid power plant. The pilot sends energy from your car if you drive a Ford F-150 Lightning,

to the grid during peak demand times. The partnership began last summer, and Vehicle to Home

Capability was in the first bit of the project. This summer, Vehicle to Grid itself, proper energy

trading, not just powering your home, but connecting up to the grid. Hard to get right,

because you need the automakers, the EVSIs, the hardware, the power companies themselves.

Here we have the National Grid, we're a small island, we have one National Grid provider,

and then we have some companies that resell electricity on top of it. But in some countries,

it's more distributed, it's going to be it's a patchwork, it's hard to pull it all together.

However, earlier the summer, large part of the eastern grid had alert-level demand during

extreme heatwaves, and this program shows that EV batteries would be able to stabilize the grid,

providing backup power to homes to lower your energy cost, and that dispatching vehicles to the grid

when demand and prices are high. Controls cost. Greg Jackson, the boss of Octopus, talks about

this all the time. He said, the move to clean green electricity, to energy storage, to batteries,

to EVs. People argue against them on the basis of this is rich boy technology, you need to be

loaded to drive an EV. I'm not going to pretend that my battery wasn't £7,000, the solar system,

I've got 16 panels. That wasn't expensive, but we just moved into this house and we're

between two amazing schools. We're going to be here for at least the next, who knows, what life

throws at you, 5, 8, 10 years, maybe longer, right? And so we amortize that over the cost of being

here, and for us, that makes sense. Our daily costs are now vastly reduced, and we build that

into the investment like we pay our mortgage off, and so that was the way that we looked at it,

we're not rich, but there's ways of making it work, and clean green technology, like this shows

that not only is it better, but it lowers the price as well, as we clean the grid up as we use cars,

and battery energy storage, it lowers the price for everybody. The whole, it's more expensive thing

is just a lie. Volkswagen is joining the IEA Task 53 program. This is a collaboration program

with the International Energy Agency, IEA, to improve the interoperability of vehicle to grid

ecosystems. The W Group is its first automotive partner. This is important work to be doing

because Volkswagen, even now, provides a bidirectional DC-charging

MEB on the 77 kilowatt hour big battery packs, version 3.5 or higher. The capability is available

in Germany, I think, but this task force, task 53, as it's called, bringing Volkswagen into it,

they say that the broad adoption of bidirectional charging depends on vehicles,

chargers and grids. That's exactly what I just said, isn't it? By joining Task 53,

VW wants to identify the obstacles and just make it work. Lots of bits need to line up.

It's very much a solvable problem, and we can get there, and we should get there as quick as possible

as well. And how many, do you think, vehicles and pair, which is Renault's mechanical hub has

produced in terms of their powertrains? Well, it's based in Clion, and the Groups hub has a

decade of experience in EV motor industrialisation. I've had two Renault Zoys over the years,

I don't know if they evolved in those. It's just made its one million electric powertrains

since 2015. They provide motors for both inside and outside the Renault Group. Since 2017,

the plant has been undergoing a digital transformation over the past three years. They've accelerated that

programme with new production lines and greater agility. They can make the motors faster with

more reliability as well. Artificial intelligence analyzes the motors and the very critical parameters

of those. And if there's a deviation, they can trigger an alert, stop the line, make sure quality

is remaining high. Two approaches are now being used to race performance and competitiveness. They

talk about vertical integration of all the electronic component assembly and a 40% reduction in the

size of the electronic components as well. A million motors from Renault, that's great,

and I'm not surprised as well. They've been doing this a long time since the early days,

at least in the European market as well, if you can get the Zoe way you listen to the podcast.
