So I'll tell you about the McMurtry spilling electric hypercar finally entering production, if you fancy one.
On EV News China today, we're talking about the updated Denzer D9, BYD suing Trump and Cherry claiming a breaking breakthrough.
Let's get into it. Let's talk about some used EV sales here in the United Kingdom.
UK used car sales grew last year, driven by electric vehicles, used battery electric vehicles surged here, at least where I am.
35.7% year on year.
The United Kingdom saw 274,815 used EVs sold.
That was 3.5% of the market.
We took a lot about the new cars. We took a lot about Norway getting to almost 100% new car bevs.
We look at the used market and we're at 3.5%.
That's the urgency. That's the reason we have to do it now because cars aren't mobile phones.
Cars aren't turned over every mobile phone contract in two years time.
They're going to be on the road for decades and we look at the used market.
So it jumped from 2.5 to 3.5 year over year, but that's the level it's at.
Petrol and diesel models dominate with 89.9% of transactions in the used market.
Biopreferences remained conservative.
Black was the most popular color, by the way, followed by gray and white.
I saw that in the data as well.
Growth in EVs depends on continued new car supply, though, feeding the secondary market.
Currently, traditional fuel types and conventional colors are what define the used market.
Jaguar Land Rover will unveil a smaller electric Range Rover this year, debuting its electric modular architecture.
This model replaces the Velar with a longer, lower body that reduces drag and extends range.
Applewood in the northwest of England will produce it alongside the Evoke and this Discovery Sport,
following a facility overhaul for the EMA.
Now, a Freelander branded SUV arrives later this year as well.
They're developing that one with Cherry, built near Shanghai on Cherry's platform, T1X,
the plug-in hybrid launched in China first.
The Range Rover Electric, though, reaches customers in 2026 after a two-year delay
in their new platform.
The main big-boy Range Rover is going to have a 117 kilowatt-hour battery,
480 kilometers of range, 800-volt architecture, and all the toys.
Now, Jaguar's electric four-door sedan debuts this summer.
I told you about that recently.
1,000 horsepower, three motors, 120 kilowatt battery.
That's where Jaguar goes electric.
Now, BYD just launched the Ato3 Evo in Europe,
and it's not just a slight marginal, iterative improvement on that car.
This is a substantial redesign.
This isn't, well, we've given it a new paint color in the design studio and some different fabrics.
So let me tell you about the new Ato3.
Well, it first arrived in 2023, and three years later, we get an update,
and it moves from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive.
There's an all-wheel drive option.
It's on BYD's new E-platform 3.0.
The battery goes from 60 to 75 kilowatt hours.
The range goes from 260 to 317.
The platform goes to 800-volt architecture.
The peak charging goes to 220 kilowatts.
This is a BYD Ato3.
This is about as much of a mainstream family vehicle as you're going to get.
With insanely good specs.
And the performance of the rear-drive model with 230 kilowatt motor on it,
0-62 in 5.5 seconds puts it in a really competitive window.
That's down from 7.3 seconds.
The all-wheel drive will do it in 3.9 seconds using an additional motor on the front
for, I think, a total of 330 kilowatts and 292 miles of total range.
It'll tow 1,500 kilograms.
It'll do vehicle to load.
So an emergency at home or on a campsite or wherever you need to get power.
That's 3 kilowatts you can take out of the vehicle.
BYD Blade Battery, lithium-ion phosphate chemistry using cell-to-body technology.
More efficient, lighter, cheaper.
The rear suspension adopts a new 5-link design from the previous 4-link setup.
Boot capacity gets bigger as well.
And this, I don't have pricing on.
It's anything I haven't got for you on the BYD ATO3.
It's just a very competitive vehicle now with these specs.
I mean, just everything.
They've redesigned it.
The socket's a USB inside.
It's got a 360 camera.
It's just all the toys.
But the actual bones of the car that I've just been telling you about.
Well, that's the stuff that is either going to make your life easy
for the time that you own it or not.
And this being a very family-orientated SUV.
Not too big.
Not too small.
Nice choice of materials inside.
The pictures they sent out today with the press release
with the light-colored interior with, yeah, a couple of screens.
Obviously a big screen in the middle and a driver's display
behind the steering wheel as well.
Big frunk in this.
The BYD ATO3 Evo just made a really, really big statement.
All right, let's move on.
BYD, we'll stay with BYD, by the way.
BYD is pursuing a sulfide-based solid-state battery
as its primary technology route,
according to an investor relations disclosure earlier today.
The company began solid-state lithium research in 2016.
Had prototypes in 2022.
Made their pilot units two years ago.
The sulfide composite electrolyte.
And I'm getting a little out of my wheelhouse here.
I'm learning about it literally as we go.
It pairs a high-nickel ternary cathode with silicon-based anodes.
So they get to an energy density of 400 watt-hours per kilogram.
We've heard people talk about 500, but this is 400.
The cells deliver over 1,000 kilometers of driving range
in a typically-sized battery
and an 80% charge in 10 minutes.
Small-scale production will kick off next year for BYD.
They'll put 1,000 demonstration vehicles on the road.
And by 2030, BYD expects installation volumes around 40,000 vehicles.
They'll start with the premium or expensive vehicles
because that's how technology scales.
External supply to third-party customers is planned for 2033,
where volume should be 130,000 vehicles a year
for their solid-state battery technology.
Now, Honda announced a fundamental review of its car strategy
after mounting EV losses pushed its auto business
into four consecutive quarters of losses.
The company reported a 61% drop in operating profit
for October to December.
Honda's EV-related write-offs were $1.71 billion
in the nine months ending December of last year.
Full-year losses, $1.86 billion expected.
The company projected its EV business
will lose $4.48 billion for the financial year
that ends at the end of March in all of six weeks' time.
So has it gone wrong at Honda?
Well, it's not as big a write-off as its competitors
have had to do.
Sales performance, though, probably underscores what went wrong.
Honda's global EV sales fell to 15,000 vehicles
in Q4 last year.
Well, their competitor, Toyota,
did pretty well doubling their EV sales.
The Honda Prologue, which was built on GM's Altium platform,
saw US sales plunge 86% in Q4.
Honda is also facing a $2 billion US tariff bill,
and the CEO, Toshihiro Imube,
previously cutting EV targets from expected $2 million
down to 700,000 vehicles by 2030.
They still maintain 2040 combustion phase out,
but Honda's another company that have made
some missteps in product mix
and also have made some really interesting things.
Little Honda E was incredible,
but then didn't go anywhere with it.
These are the kind of missteps
or different paces of adoption
that their competitors were maybe doing 10 years ago.
So, like, you know, I always compare them to BMW.
BMW came out of the gate with the i8, the i3.
Fantastic, high-tech, very expensive,
didn't make any money on them.
And then for a period of time, BMW just prevaricated.
They took about their power of choice.
We're going to send everything down the production line.
Could be petrol, could be hybrid, could be EV.
We don't really mind what the...
And then BMW took a while to get to Neuerklasse
and some change of management.
And now we see where they are.
They're completely all-in on EV.
500 miles of range, 800-volt architecture,
massively fast-charging when they don't try and have it all.
And that's kind of where Honda's been.
They've done some really interesting things.
They're in a difficult position, aren't they?
Honda's not the biggest company in the world.
And, you know, they've got some big choices to make.
They have got a very big strength
in depth of engineering talent at Honda.
And I can't wait to see if they focus on EVs, what they'd make.
Mazda is one of those small companies as well.
They're needing to lean on their partnerships.
So Mazda's going to launch their new EV in the UK this summer.
It's the Mazda 6E and it comes from China.
And it's going to be below $40,000.
Two trims, both of them below $40,000.
So luxury car buyers tax exempt.
So 80 kilowatt-hour LFP pack,
rear-wheel drive and 350 miles of WLTP range.
It'll charge at almost 200 kilowatts peak.
24 minutes, 10 to 80.
These are really, really good specs, by the way.
The Mazda 6E, at least from the front to me,
looks like exactly how I think a Mazda should look.
And the trim, with its artificial leather,
with its various suede and different fabric choices inside,
And this is, again, Mazda leaning into Chinese partnerships
to get a very compelling EV out the door.
Less than $40,000, I think that's probably a winning price.
Now, we'll talk more solid-state batteries
and lamp post-charging in a minute. Stick around.
That's money back every month.
Step three, create a financial goal.
$50 every paycheck or let the app automatically move
small amounts of cash when you can afford it.

Scape opened its automated Eagle Line pilot facility
in San Jose on February 4th
while Karma Automotive partnered with Factorial
to launch what they call the first U.S.
solid-state battery production program
for passenger vehicles.
Karma will debut Factorial's technology
in its new supercupay next year.
Factorial has attracted backing from Mercedes-Benz,
Delantis, and Hyundai and Kia.
Mercedes invested high double-digit millions, they say,
and have been testing the Factorial batteries
in an EQS vehicle.
They drove from Stuttgart to Malmo,
which is 750 miles or 1,200 kilometers
on a single charge with the Factorial solid-state packs,
which are thinner and lighter and more energy dense.
Delantis are having involvement as well.
Cherry began pilot testing of their batteries this year.
Twilio, to keep telling us,
they've got solid-state stuff in the works.
BYD, I've told you about already recently.
So the solid-state or even semi-solid-state,
which is on the road right now,
but proper solid-state, which has been coming a long time,
finally feels like everyone's talking about it
with some really serious intent.
Now, Fuse has secured certifications
for its LAMP post-charge points,
becoming the only UK operator
certified for both OCPP,
so that's Open Charge Point Protocol
and also measured central management systems as well.
The Lancashire-based Charge Point Management System,
now supports LAMP post and street furniture-based charging.
So many places here, maybe older towns and cities.
You haven't got a driveway, but you park on the street,
very common.
Most of the houses that I've lived in in my life,
you parked on the street.
If you could get anywhere near your front door,
it was a bonus when you were carrying shopping in the rain.
And so, particularly when we lived in London,
we lived south-west-E, London, in old, historic, built-up bits.
Houses built in 1905, 1910.
There's no way they have driveways.
They were just terrorist houses.
You're parking a long way.
LAMP post and street parking, AC, slow, overnight
is what's needed in so many places.
Don't think that everyone's got a driveway.
Don't think that we're all DC charging.
So this is really, really important work to do.
These new certifications enable Charge Point Operators
to do different charging types.
LAMP posts and things like that.
LAMP post charging has expanded in urban areas
where residents lack off-street parking.
Existing infrastructure, often if it's street lights,
is wired up to a connection that can cope
with some slow EV charging as well.
Now, let's talk about this car that you may have seen
going up the Goodwood Hill that sucks itself
to the ground, the McMurtry vehicle.
They just opened their 2,700 square meter factory
in Gloucestershire to make their electric hypercar
the spearling.
The production begins immediately
and the first customer deliveries will be this summer.
The facility will enable McMurtry to expand
its product range beyond the single seat track car,
the fan car that spins up its fan
and literally sucks the car to the ground.
The company's existing headquarters
will function as an R&D centre.
Now looking at battery systems, electric powertrains
and build construction.
Three years ago, it was a driver called Max Chilton
who drove the vehicle to break the 23-year
Goodwood Festival of Speed Hill Climb record
doing the 1.16 miles in 39 seconds.
That was previously set by a Formula One car.
Customer versions are going to have
1,000 horsepower to the rear wheel,
60 kilowatt-hour pack that's 15% lighter
than the prototype version.
It's going to be below 1,000 kilograms,
0-62 if you can hold on, 1.5 seconds,
200 miles an hour top speed.
So this is a 3.45-metre-long vehicle
that will still accommodate people who are 6'7".
So they're going to make 100 of them.
Oh, there's just a small point.
They cost a million pounds each.
But don't let that get in the way.
I'm sure your order is in already
and that's your podcast for today.
