You know what time it is. It is Daytona week the Daytona 500 is just around the corner here in six days
It's where heroes are made and legends never die year 25 after the fateful day
We had lost Dale Earnhardt. We're gonna recap all of this so much racing going on in Florida join about our dear friend co-host Ryan
flora zoomin in from
sunny, Florida we are here
freezing our
Gunay nays off. I can literally see my breath in the nonsense garage. So I'm ready to head south
Here in a second, but first we got to press go and tape some stacking pennies all that and more. Let's buckle up
Stacking them deep selling them cheap. It tastes like gasoline grubber and victory. Where's that here stack?
Big show on tap today. We've got the duly gassed up
Brinkly loaded down with all the stuff
But before we head to south we got to press go and record one last episode before the big day
I am Corey the joy. This is stacking pennies joined
By now
Booth commentator on flow racing mr. Orion Flores
Joining you live from the Hilton
New Sumerna Beach on Flagler our business center
Marty down here. They called Speed Weeks for a reason. It's been so cool
Got to come down like you said do the booth analysis for the modified racers will dive into and since you're such a great friend
You're asking me if I watched the
Super Bowl yesterday as I had it on the trailer at the racetrack because I raced last night. You're like, oh, I didn't even know
Thanks for keeping up. Yeah, I had no idea you were racing last night actually I thought you were racing tonight being Monday
I'm racing tonight as well. Okay very weeks
It's a whole lot. Yeah. Yeah, I get that right priest is down there racing every night of the week
So I asked them. Yeah, of course everybody's watching the Super Bowl. What was your favorite?
What was your favorite commercials? We're gonna get to that later in the show
You finished third last night
Now your commentator in the booth
On saturday, you did the NASCAR wheeling modified tour. I thought you did a good job. What was your initial takes after that?
Um, buddy, I always thought that being a competitor was the most important thing because we're competitors, right?
that
booth stuff
Is so stressful because you can only screw it up and you're you know when you
Race you're just responsible for your car. If you have a bad day
Blame the tires. You can blame the other drivers. You can blame the motor. You blame the wind whatever you want
But when you're in the booth, you're responsible for you know, putting the pen of paper and telling everybody's story and preparing and
If you mess up, man, it's on you
So it was really good out of Kyle Ricky who's awesome and a great staff from NASCAR to guide me along
And it's just a lot of fun dude at the end of the day once you get rolling and through everything
It's just sitting here shooting the breeze about racing which is why we do this podcast
We just love racing
Well, that's right. I mean also star studded crew down there for the for the whale modified. I'll tell you
Bob donor and matt donor being pit road
Jim Trado
On pit road yourself and Kyle Ricky in the booth
I'll say this the camera quality for those guys is fantastic. It'll look like a shot was shot in 4k
Do the full guys in the production booth like that's all new to me
But they do such a good job like minute they have it broken down minute by minute what you're gonna do and they're always in your
here telling you
Um, what when we go to the break what we have going on the hardest part for me like I could do color commentating and good
Tell you about racing. I really got to work on my driver intro voice
That is not something that I was really signed up for I think I'm a little flat on that
But if you want to know what's going on in the race and you know, who's got tires who doesn't why they're falling back
Why somebody wrecked I could do that driver intro is I got to work on my wrestling voice a little bit
Let's hear a little bit of it
I'm not doing it right now. I had a rough night. I told you earlier
We're staying in a hotel my man crew my little guy fell out of the bed last night about four o'clock
And hit his head and it's been a rough night. So I'm just happy to be here this morning
Uh on stacking pennies with you and my wife handling that in the room for a little bit
Well, I'm glad you're able to make it
Thoughts and prayers to crew is his forehead. Okay. Where was it in relation?
Yeah, I got hit the back of his head a little bit. He's got a little bit of a gash. It's not enough too
That was a hell no moment. You know, we had a whole hell yeah day. Let me tell you
That yesterday at new somerna all my friends there my cousins lived down here like my whole little team
We just it was so much fun. That's like what this is all about
We came race the racing is like the extra point of it
but just having everybody here riding around on the scooters having the kids at the racetrack and just
Just getting a beat together seeing everybody camping and like driving to the racetrack, right the
Spring car haulers sunshine's hauler passes me going there and you see all the other race car haulers and there's so many different divisions
They're showing up on open trailers at the florida modifies
There's just race cars everywhere all leading to the Daytona 500
And it's just really cool to be down here and be a part of it. It's freaking awesome time of the year down here
And there's a wow-wow right down the road, which is amazing
And there's a buckys right there in Daytona beach as well. There's one in jacksonville. I've already gotten plotted out
So, hey, let's dive into the 500. I heard an awesome quote this week
and
I've never really heard it said this way, but your car owner and the guy you filled in for last week rack is last
He said the race determines who wins it and I felt that like I feel as that race goes on in the 500
It just being a pit crew guy and I want to want to hear your perspective as a driver
but
There's these moments of the race so you start the race and you're trying to keep your stuff together and then the first wreck happens
Then the second wreck happens and people get some penalties on pit road
And each time that there's a big moment and you make it through it pressure builds pressure builds pressure builds
Until you're in the position you were in last year with three to go leading the race
Does it feel like that in the car? Do you start feeling the weight of that race as it goes on?
Dude, it's like
It ratchets down
Every passing lap every passing stage
But what I love about it is when the sun starts to go down, you know the pressure is going up
Like the sun goes down
Lights come on it's like, okay, we're getting down to it and I got to start making sure I'm in the right spot
But yeah, I mean brad
I believe this this is
Kyle Busch is 20. No brad's 20th year
Going down there looking for harley jarl trophy
so
for him to say that
For him to say that the race choose that that's a great that is a great way to put it because
There's a lot of times when you get caught up in something
Very rarely is it your own fault sometimes it is but very rarely is is it your fault?
And you have to be perfect and then still your chances of winning could be zero
I think about being a good example of the race choosing who wins it
Ricky stenhouse spent on pit road during a green flag sequence
In the last stage of the in the last stage of the year he won the first year of the next gen car
The entire field piles up into one and he's on the opposite side of the track
Which should have been a massive mistake a day killer
Wipes out the entire field and he goes on to win the race
Yeah, and you used to always be able to just ride in the back right like
But now if the race doesn't play that way
We've seen a lack of the big one per se at some of these super speedways
Because everybody's saving fuel in the packs a little bit tighter and it's way harder to pass than it's ever been
So where the strategy used to be where you could just ride in the back and save your stuff and keep defenders on it
And then pounce with 20 to go now you have to be
Most of these guys feel like they have to be racing all day long in the front making moves and
Jockeying for position and trying to lead your manufacturer
You want to be if you're in a Ford or Chevy or Toyota?
You want to be the first one of your manufacturer off of pit road after that last pit cycle and when that
Last pit cycle is done and we have enough fuel when everything's finished now. It's time to get it
The table is set for the feast if you will after the last pit sequence
And then I could all get jumbled up when a big caution happens, but
I think that I see something the NASCAR they're doing instead of the full speed all on the playoffs
They announced they're doing like a race specific
I think that's what they're doing. So they're doing they're following a couple guys Zillich. I believe is one
For the 500 and a couple other ones. Uh, so that's what they're going to be doing for that full speed show
So that'd be cool. I think though
They're missing the boat
on
Following an open car now. I would be if I wasn't
Trying to make it as an open car
I'd still would say that because knowing the pressure that these teams feel to try to go qualify for the 500
It's the most pressure they'll face all year
Whether it's the car chief
Entire team building the car to try to qualify on a wednesday night or the driver thursday night trying to qualify on for the dual
That's like the biggest story from wednesday until friday morning
I've never been in this position core. This is the first time i've ever been on a car that's not locked in
And I feel the pressure of it with that 40 car and just getting prepared and
going
to hendrick and being kind of part of that system
And preparing that pit box and getting ready and like meeting with the the car chief and the crew chief and being like, okay
If this situation happens, what do we need if this situation happens?
What do we need and waking up in the middle of the night and being like, okay?
If all of the open cars wreck
In our dual and we have to be the ones that beat them off a pit road and finish the race
What do we need for damage repair because it's easy to just go?
That's an open car if we get wrecked, you know, we're done
But that's not the case you want to be prepared for every instance every situation
Because the ones that you don't prepare for are the ones that go into arise
So you want to make sure that you have all the boxes checked and this is where 20 years of experience helps out
But i'm ready to get down there and i'm nervous. I have that little bit of anxiety in me of like
Oh, man, it's getting close. I can only imagine how you feel
I feel loose
Like this is not an unfamiliar spot to be for me. I mean I've went down there and made it with some donkeys, bro
Like the literally this my first time there with bk
We were the slowest car by like four tenths
Like there was everybody
And then there was us
and somehow we
Beat re-sorts and and got what I spun him out, but still made the day 200 500
Somehow just some somehow we got by the grace of god and 700 horsepower might have crashed him in the trial
But might have crashed and he left the door open
And like I said, I crashed my mom. Sorry for your luck
Crash my mom made the they thought I was sorry. So speaking of guys being pissed off
Listen, we get all this hype all this cool stuff going on with Cadillac f1
And I don't I don't look up who michael bay is obviously a high shop producer
But he's suing them over a super bowl commercial like what are we doing?
Well as we have now starting to learn race teams love controversy and lawsuits
Just add another one to the list
Cadillac f1 comes out of the gate. They also had like a shadow box. Did you see that in time square?
the second that the
Commercial happened they you know flip the switch and it comes and reveals the car
I'd be curious what they spent on that thing
What's that spot 30 second spot?
10 million bucks eight to 12
Without any cost of production
and
Like don't hate the livery don't love the livery
I was expecting a little bit of I was hoping for a little bit of yellow
Because those Cadillac hypercars a couple years ago with the yellow and the red and the silver dialed
Hi, listen, I'm I'm just looking at it now. I didn't get to see it last night as we were racing
Why is the default f1 color silver every car I see is some sort of like some sort of silver
I think it looks sweet, but there's like the same they're they're all the same
It really chaps my ass. What about guys with all white cars? Yeah, one team gets a color. Hey, we got blue
No one else can okay. We got silver or we got red
Like I I want I don't want to see all this
It's like it'd be like watching my kids basketball team if all of the kids had the same color jersey
They're just running around. I don't know who's who what is going on?
That's what that's what we've got. We've got we've got that going on right now. We need a little more color speaking of that
Did you watch a halftime show? I didn't I didn't get to watch a halftime show
Because I was racing my wife though 100 porto rican. I have been to
A bad bunny concert
I really enjoyed the bad bunny concert, but I'll be honest
He said thunder and lightning twice
And there's only words I understood but it was a hell of a time
He came out on a horse like I had a blast and we listened to bad bunny quite a bit at our house
Because my wife's porto rican roots. I love bad bunny, but
And I can sing the words. I just don't know what they mean
I bet carissa was
Dancing in the trailer while you were going around the track. Well before the race like it was kind of lining up
uh to where
They feature was rolling out the same time the halftime show was going on
Uh sounds like babe, it's okay. You can stand where we were parked like you could stand in the back of the trailer
And watch the super bowl and just watch me come off turn four and just make sure if I stop coming off turn four
Just go check the record and make sure i'm all right
But yeah, a lot of people talking about that halftime show and look man, I feel like every year
No matter what people are pissed off about the halftime show about something
Well, that's just that's just life
They're gonna be pissed off
There's gonna be 50 of the population pissed off about it wasn't the other
Way the halftime show fans must be the same fans that were mad about nascar for the last 10 years
I bet you there there's really there's probably only like
10 000 people
In the grand scheme like there's probably
Even less than 10 000 people that are the ones that are most vocal that are pissed off about you know
Nascar on social media, but I don't want to get down that rabbit hole
I had I wanted to see what all the hubbub was about with the all american halftime show
So I pulled it up on my phone. It's just like all right. I can get down at lee brice
He's performed over joey's
Hasn't he done joey's charity charity?
I believe so yeah concert right then they had ol bob
Kid rock doing his thing
And I just had it on my phone let's go open it out
Kelly ripped me a new one
real pissed off
Said that I wasn't supporting
The halftime show that was on the television. I said I'm watching both
I want if if there is an espanol svu episode on I'm gonna look
For the english svu episode because that's just what I understand
I always speak uno
language
senior
Well, it was funny because my wife, you know, my wife naturally being Puerto Rican and a huge bad bunny fan was frustrated
about
Just why she was frustrated that everybody was frustrated that bad bunny was gonna be um
This super bowl halftime show and I said I don't think people are mad. I just think they don't speak the same language
Like it's just natural thing. She was we get kind of a conversation about it
Well, like a week or this happened like a month ago
And like a week or so later after this conversation
I'm a huge peeky blinders fan like I've watched peeky blinders
Three times through I've never watched anything more than once
Uh, so I was watching peeky blinders like hey, you want to watch peeky blinders with me? She goes no
I can't understand what they're saying and I hate reading the subtitles and I said, baby
Point in case of why people are frustrated
With the super bowl halftime show and she's like
Damn it. You got me. It just left the chat. But uh
But yeah, I don't know like it's and that's the thing
Different strokes for different folks man, it's america. You can pick what you want. There's so much. It's a melting pot
If you want to watch bad bunny if you want to watch
The other halftime shows if you want to watch the puppy bowl
You got options. I literally brought the puppy bowl. Everybody else's options. You could just I literally brought the puppy bowl
I'm gonna do this. I said honey
Would you be mad at me if instead of watching bad bunny and espanol I flipped over and watched the puppy bowl
Would you be mad at me then?
Just because I'm watching lee brice and bob richard doesn't mean I'm like I just want to listen to some english
And also, hey great production on the halftime show. Look pretty cool. You know
Means you're one more week away
From Daytona 500 and I love and one more week away from the hell. Yeah, dude. We how about the the commercial that nascar put up
The video they put up on instagram. Have you seen it?
He said our forefathers didn't throw tea in the harbor of boston
Like it's like so we could just hang out. It's awesome, dude. It is so good
We need to play it on here because it's just who we are and bodies who we are nascar
Is embracing that as a sport as our fan culture
And I'm I'm all in for it and look dude
I
Cannot wait for thursday
But I am looking forward so much
To friday with tony store back in the field cletus mcfarland you the friday night truck race is going to be so badass
That's a whole lot. Hell. You have no commercial and that's who we are right nascar is so badass and when I think of other sports, right?
That have adopted the nascar way like look at golf right when you go to waste management. What's that hole 16?
They have adopted a nascar way, right?
They want to make that like the infield of talladega the infield of michigan what we have
And for too long we have been trying to be like other people or like them like golf where we
Wear our nice clothes and go to the racetrack and act important screw that dude. We're there to race. Let's go
And own it own what we do well and also like I'm sure that there is a very large percentage of golf fans purists if you will
That absolutely hate that
Guys running in at 6 15 in the morning to try to grab their seats
Freakin throwing drinks onto the to the green if they get a hole in one like
I'm sure the people that create a golf in ireland don't take too kindly to that sort of environment, but it's sick
but also
ireland
Scotland somewhere over there. Sure. It's it's it's it's it's over there, but like
Where's the balance though too?
Did they get a hole in one? Oh, they when they were putting the pin in they were loosening their mind. That's awesome. Like no
Is that good? I like that guy's got the awesome job too
You know what the you know what the only
Thing about golf that gets me. It's the only hell yeah moment. I have a golf all day
I suck all day long on the golf course. It happens every time
I'm over it lose every ball in my bag. I got one ball left
I go to hole 18. I stripe it like I'm tiger wood straight down the fairway
And then my chip shot 10 yards from the hole and it always keeps me coming back
It pisses me right off. What would be the equivalent of like
stages or like
Playoffs with golf like if we were to fix golf like it stinks
We need to spice this thing up. No, no, no
No
Golf is what it is
We ain't fixing anything if you like golf go play it. We already had people try to fix NASCAR
I don't want that anymore. We are what we are. It's been great
If you want to play golf go play golf
But let there be a space
For hole 16 at the waste management for people that enjoy it a little bit different
Let happy Gilmore come in every now and then that's what I'm about
Well, yeah, because everybody can't be happy Gilmore than if everybody's just normal
You're damn right. Then you get a bunch of phony. Also
Shout out to cleetus and host of our spraying flame throws with the back of Dale truck really I mean there
That thing's getting some use. I gotta give it to him. Last night. We were at the bar
Um, did you see figure skating? Who I don't know the guy who won was
We were watching it. The guy was badass american won the thing even if
I did watch it. I wouldn't admit that I turned it on voluntarily to watch figures
I didn't say that I was at the bar. It was on at the restaurant bar that we were
Oh, hang on. Hang on. Here's the headline olympic ski jumpers might be using penis injections to fly further report
Alleges, okay. I mean, I don't want to see pictures, but give me the cliff notes on what's going on here
Uh, less drag
I mean, how big is their junk if that's affecting how far they they're flying
Every little bit a every little bit matters. I mean, you're trying to look for a 10 thousands on the roof
With an extra layer of of decal two centimeter increase in your suit size in your groin area
Could add five to six meters
Based off reduction of drag coefficients
Stuff a couple socks in there, buddy. How bad do you want it?
How bad do you want that is so funny because like think about it
We we're all doing it right think about it like a racer would if I learned
That that would happen
I would
Probably get in penis injections too if it meant I would win
but
You know, then you start thinking like well
I fell one time. I think I need to wear a cup
And your cup size gets a little bit, you know, like that's how my brain goes
Just like any good racer any good competitor. It's like we're gonna maximize this
Have you thought about sticking a needle in your wiener? I mean, hey if I'm training for four years in my one shot
They said hey jam this jam this up there and just gonna get you extra five meters. Yep
But I'd be like, hey, don't let this out on social media because we're really gonna get roasted
We had to keep this one. Yeah, make sure it doesn't end up on a us today article
But other than that. Yeah, I'll try I'll take a look at it
who
Let the penis the doping out who told everybody some and no with somebody in this room
There's a story talk about, you know, just looking for the gray area
It Daytona is where you always used to you still do weigh in for the season, right?
and
Now especially that all the cars weigh the same your weight bracket is set
So they came out with weight brackets when Danica was was driving cut they used to be like, hey
You would roll your car across and then it had to weigh 3400 pounds for example
Didn't matter if your driver weighed 100 pounds like Danica or 240 like Ryan Newman
So Ryan Newman's car would weigh 140 more pounds in theory than Danica's car would back before they had these brackets, right?
So now they have every 10 pounds 100 to 110
10 to 120 all the way up to 240
So wherever you weigh in at they take the difference and your car rolls across the scales at that weight so
if
Ross Chastain weighs 150 and I weigh 200 my car would weigh 50 pounds less that way when we sit in it
The cars are relatively the same. So now the game is the drivers want to go try to weigh in heavy
Okay
So they now have now
NASCAR has now caught on to all of the shenanigans
Because now they make you weigh in with your skibbies on no socks
like
On the scale and some some guy goes in there and checks doesn't give you a pat down, but you know
Scoping out make sure you get the injections an unnamed team
made tungsten jock straps
So we're all waiting in line. This is like six or seven years ago. We're all waiting in line
there's like
eight or nine people
another unnamed driver
Driving for an unnamed team at the time. I had a candy sponsor
Passes everybody
Stands on the scale because now this previously we're on our clothes
Jackets right you're like water bottles in your pocket like Wild West like I'd weigh in 185 190
I could weigh in at 220 if I really wanted to
This guy gets on the scale tink tink
260
And this guy would be 160
If there was a strong wind right and walking around 160 and the the official looked up like
Beat it come back
I'll tell you I'll tell you off camera who that was but so yes
There were teams making tungsten insoles for shoes
tungsten jock straps
Who knows what the other sort of accessories they might have had hanging on them but
nonetheless
If they're a racer and there's an opportunity to go get more they're going to go take it all
So now we weigh in and you're in your boxers
There's not a whole lot of shenanigans
You do eat a big breakfast and eat drink as much water as you possibly can to try to get to the next weight bracket
Speaking of racing in the olympics, you see Lindsay Vaughn went down certified babe of the week. Lindsay Vaughn
Well, she last week
She tore acl right so she was doing some rehab
Unbelievable skier 41 years old coming back for one last olympics and goes down the first run. Do you see I saw some pictures of it
There was like right off the bat. There was like a traverse like a hill
In her pole her stick. What do you call this pole?
caught the gate
up in the air yard sale
going that fast down
Like any going that fast anywhere, bro
They are just your body and skis if you get the slightest bit of tug the wrong way
It's got to be brutal
But she like going through like no acl like all the stuff she went through
with just rehab and recovery
When you are as great as she is and you get in your 40s and your body doesn't heal or starts
giving up on you it is such a
Tough time because you're transitioning out of being that you know elite athlete
And you got one more shot and to go down like that to have to get meta
Which you get medevac off of the helicopter
Yeah, the chopper off broker femur mountain
man
Shout out Lindsey Vaughn for for representing the United States like a true professional
Gold gold medal winner. The women's hockey is just obliterating people right now. Did women's hockey?
Electric in this in the olympics for sure. Yeah, I followed that up
I mean hell more. I love love that
Uh, yes
Shout out to tamirah to tamirah tamra tamra mensa stock in 20 tokyo 2020
so that like think about I think about
like the
basket you watch the basketball documentary with like lebron step when they all want to play and like those guys are
Millionaires like well brown james like a billionaire multi-millionaires
And they all go there and don't get paid anything and how important it is for them to represent their country in the legacy
that the dream team left behind and
It's it was so cool just to see
Like those that that documentary and to get a peek behind the curtain of just what it means because those guys could turn a blind eye
And be pissed off and and be too cool for school right and leave it to just college kids
But the moments that come out of the olympics man, I think of the miracle and
Great moments are born
From great opportunity from great opportunity here tonight boys is a great
Opportunity we have my pit coach brian holland for a long time
He would send us quotes from that he would quoted himself
he would always bring it up because he was a hockey guy and
Man, there's just there's nothing better the moments of a country versus country and how everybody rallies together
It's it's freaking especially mother russia taking them down 1980. I've been to that
That arena it's sick, dude
And I got down the rabbit hole. Was there a new netflix doc about the miracle?
I was watching a couple episodes fire me up, dude
That's what the olympics do man
And then you've got then you got some figure skaters here doing the
Impossible forbidden flip dude that guy's doing a backflip on ice. I can hardly walk 10 skate 10 feet
And this guy's doing a backflip. Can carl edwards do a backflip on ice skates karen ass. I'm not sure if we somehow
Find our way in victory lane. I am gonna I would do I would attempt a backflip 100 percent
Dude, you would be
Connor zillich got beat by
A window net last year. You cannot attempt a backflip
You graciously accept your price and stay on your feet, dude. No, I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna commit and let god
Jesus take the wheel
That would be the worst thing ever if you if you won
The Daytona 500 and then you try a backflip and break your neck or knock yourself out
It would be
It'd be great for ratings on the show. Don't get me wrong
That's what i'm going for if I won the Daytona 500. I'm not getting
On sport center top plays. I would get number one not top 10 for the for maybe the next
month if I
Break my neck
And have to get gurneyed off the ball field to victory lane and do my entire
Pressure in a neck brace. Have you ever done a backflip in anything before I could do it on trampoline
And I land it 30 percent of the time
How many what's your percentage 30?
You better talk to the pit crew and just do some sort of half-ass backflip and they can catch you
Just try not to kick them in the face
I think i'm gonna leave my helmet Hans on and i'm gonna look up at the
Up at the sky. The Hans isn't doing anything without seat belts, man. I'm doing it. What's the what's the worst thing that could happen?
Like I end up like landing directly on my head, which is a highlight. My kid fell out of bed last night
It was a two-foot fall and he was bleeding
Well, yeah
Car on the apron stand in the door
So you have a three-foot elevation if I tuck as hard as I can I think the chances of me landing it are
Pretty good 50 50. I like my chance. I'll meet you. Here's what I'll do
I'll meet you over at Halifax medical and I'll sign
That's what I'll do. I think I'd have enough I'd have enough amped up to pull it off
So hey, let's let's dive back into the 500 because we got down the wrap hole of the
Uh olympics, which is awesome. But you know the term that earnhardt always used you could see the air you could see the air tell me about
How that how that works tell me about how the air works in the draft. Can you feel it?
Can you see it? What's it like when we had the early morning practices and it
What is the dew point down in florida what everybody's windshields are fogged up like you can see
The trail off of the
Like how like when like a super modified you watch it an old school concord, right? You see the vapor trail
Come off the corners of the spoiler or the roof
Uh, so in those instances you can see it but mostly it's off of feel
and audio
So you can hear your rpm
Ah
And you know when you're a good spot and you can also see
When you're affecting somebody else's air
so
I think that when people say of course they learn heart
Didn't have like x-ray vision to see the air
But he had a feel for manipulating the air around his car and other people's car probably better than anybody else did
So yeah, man, you're just you're trying to position your car you're trying to
Slow other people you're not really speeding up any the pack's going to have one terminal velocity
You're just trying to position your car and slow down other guys relative to yourself
And try to lead a line because the lead in the line is okay
When can you feel when you get in the pack like is there a pressure differential?
Like almost like when you're taking off in an airplane or something like that with the air
Yeah, your your your ears will pop
um
because
Like here your window nets when it's when you're going is like right it's it's uh fluttering when you're in the pack it's just like
Like you would be standing still you can like mess with it
um
And there's like no air flow in your car
That's when you're able to run 30 40 throttle
But that doesn't mean like it's easy like you're since the car has so much downforce on it
to slow it down
Because if they didn't have if they didn't have the big split splitters and the spoilers like they would go 230
So when you're in a pack and you're like fourth or fifth car in line
You don't have any downforce on your car. So you are some in some instances swatting flies, but
back to the truck race like
There's nothing more fun than those at a speedway because they're so draggy
with big roofs and big spoilers
That NASCAR has to keep their horsepower up. So you get
massive runs
And when those things don't have any downforce on them you get a really bad spot
That's where you see a lot of guys spin out off turn four because you come off turn four
A lot of guys that hadn't been there before in a in a line and they come off four real tight tight tight tight
And they get up and the air hits the right front headlight and spins them out
You're definitely going to see some of that. There's like 12 guys that are really good
And know what they're doing and there's about 20 guys that never been there before
And they're just going to make sure that the feathers are attached. They're dark. So
It's going that that race is going to be nice. You got you ricky stanhouse carcinose far
Please make farland, but tony store. Oh butter bean queen and man. I can't I'll never be able to say his name
The same way again after here in chrysorize. I'm always going to say minotaur ale
a minotaur ale
wins the ram
Drive for the seats are really excited for those two
To be in there. But man, tony store
American badass american hero our modern day aj foy is back in the nascar and it feels damn good
It feels damn good to see him out there for sure. It'll be cool to shake and bake with him
That was one of my biggest reasons why I wanted to try to find a truck ride
Dude, he's got so many wins at daytona, but never won the 500
But it was like for years. He'd drive that orio car
For junior motorsports
He was unbeatable in a in a one two races
At tony ad with tony store at daytona vote to cope go 400
When earnhardt passed away or tony sort picked up the baton
It's wild that he never won a 500 because he was literally unbeat clash
duels
bush races
He literally won like a hundred bush races
Yeah, i'm excited for him to come back to these kids in the truck series, man
They never had an ashtune like tony store
Some of them have never raced against the guy like tony store and it shows and they need that
You need that one guy to choose that ass every now and then
so
I'm excited to see him back pit road this week. So let's let's just talk about new somerna one thing
I love about the modified series as we get in our
Little pit road segment because we're getting ready to go to daytona, right? We talked about the fuel
We've talked about the preparation
We broke down last week. How much fuel you're gonna have to take and how your
Crew chief and your gas man and your driver are gonna have to be in sync to save tenths of a second
Which equate spots off pit road and spots on the racetrack and you want to lead your lane
So one thing we did together and I was able like we said being the commentating booth for the modified race
You and I like 15 years ago
I forgot about that until I heard the richie evans memorial on friday night and we changed tires on a modified
um
And I smoked that that was oh and I was watching it again
From the booth and I forgot
I've changed tires now for
15 20 years the sketchiest moment I ever had in my life was there a new somerna because it's so tight about got ran over
Um, and there's no fenders on those cars
So you can't even jump and just get on the hood you just get run over by the tire
15 inch wide tires
So I was watching that on pit road and seeing everybody kind of navigate that
And it was really cool to see that 51 team with just a montaner
He went on the win speaker did a phenomenal job. They have live pit stops
It's not like arco where they stop and they it's like real deal
Live pit stops should let them do two pit stops two tire pit stops at a time. You got a fuel
It's just like what you see in the national series
And it's cool because it project, you know
It gets those guys ready to move up if they want to move south and chase the dream
but
Speaking about Justin Bonson or him and his car owner ken masa
Have been together for 10 15 years now a long time
And they have now become their second on the all-time win list as a driver for just my 48 wins
But ken masa the all-time winning is modified to our owner and I saw something. Yeah
That's that's got to be our pit boss of the week
They are the pit boss of the week because the dude that pit crew is like the flying aces out there
They're unbelievable. They do well
Justin said in his interview. He's like our pit crew has been struggling. We had to chew their ass
He's like we got we got them back and they're all volunteer guys, right?
Maybe they're making 100 bucks and a hot dog. They're doing it for the love of the sport
But so cool to see that series is so competitive and Justin is a four-time champ for a reason and you know, he got the
I love we talked about with priests last week
I love seeing Justin and michael christopher and austin beers get get these opportunities because of what priest is doing
I I know that it might not all because of what priest is doing
But it definitely has an influence
And it was really cool to be part of that modified community this week. What do you eat? What do you what do you drink?
Hashtag athletes you treat your body like a temple
The last thing you want to do is be sick
for sunday
And there was a stomach, but we used to get a beach house down in new somerna last year or last couple years
and
There was a stomach bug that went around from Tuesday until race day
And I happened to get it on sunday couldn't even eat an apple dude. I was in bad shape
But let's just say a normal day where I feel well
I
Coffee in the morning get a little caffeine going
Pretty big breakfast. I'll probably just go to first watch like I always do
Right across the street jumping the golf cart cruise across the street
I'll eat breakfast there pretty much every every day of the week and I'm bringing Levi my five-year-old
So it's just gonna be him him and I down there hanging hanging out having a good time little guys trip if you will
Um
So they had some cool tech a couple years ago the r&d center did that we played around with
That I think some indie car guys do it where you take a pill and the pill has
sensors for your
Heart rate
Your core temperature and it sends it to a reader that
Either like a chest strap or something like that. So I did that a couple times. I'm out on that
That sounds like some weird matrix shit. Just a whoop is fine. Why do you have to swallow something because it's more accurate?
Yeah, okay. That's some indie car shit, dude. Speaking of this is a way off the rabbit hole
Did you see that tight end commercial yesterday where they have?
uh bruce arian's like
he was the
Superwoman coach for the bucks
Coach for the the cardinals and it had all of these it had like
grok
grok uh grok and
uh
He's on amazon prime now. He was a tight end
Tony Gonzalez, they had all these guys like in their uniform like tight ends like the whole thing was
The whole commercial was talking about tight ends and then right at the very end like
Do you have a tight end when it comes to prostate exam?
Yeah
And the product was like some sort of a
You know a blood test and they said don't worry about having tight end. What do you do with this pill? You poop it out
Yes, hopefully plug it in like what the hell is going on? I'm not gonna be rummaging for it
Yeah, so they did they did say that they had to recover the pill
Before they had the transmitter to send the data live
And just drink some electrolytes to get in the race car, dude. We don't need to know that much
Kale y'all bro ain't digging through shit for a heart rate monitor
Yeah
Things david pierce and never said hold on i gotta swallow my heart rate monitor before i get in this thing
He was he might have been taking a pill
But it was just some damn i'd be profing because his arm was broke
No back there was goodie's headache powder and a coca-cola
That's what marry. That's what race cars are built on buddy and a winston dart before the race
The question keeps coming in. Where do you pee?
Of course shit is pants last year after they told the 500. That was the story
After race. Yeah, I uh, I forgot forgot my had a stomach and it never fails
The end of the race you've been in the car for four hours
You're gonna get a red flag that's gonna last 20 minutes because they got some car on fire
That's when you think about having to pee right you make sure you go pee. That's like if side note
For fans if you want
Every single driver's autograph on some helmet or some piece of memorabilia stand next to the bathroom
In the garage
Where everybody comes and goes
Every single driver will hit that one bathroom before the race
Pro tip that's where you want to get your autographs. Some guys might not oblige
I would happily oblige and sign your stuff and no one washes their hands. Nobody wash their hands
So you're gonna have piss all over your autograph. That's false. I would say that half
I'm not telling you which side of the coin. I'm on of that but
Yes, don't shake hands buddy
If you come out of the porter potty, you might get a squeeze of the half ass sanitizer, but you are not
Washing your hand. No. Yeah. No, I'm not going now. I'm not going to
I'm not leaving a ported potty and then go into the little deal with the little pump foot pump ain't happen
What a waste of time
Nice invention
Very inefficient. Just keep it moved. How you doing? All right. Hey, so
Here we go. I I gotta get going south, bro
You're you're you're really making this thing longer than needs to be
That's why I just want to make some picks and get the hell out of here
I want to know can't pick ourselves. Who's gonna win the 500 and who's are all too soon season champion
Here's we are in the dawn of the 500 as the season looms upon us
I'll be a company man
Because nascar always has a way of getting delivered
unbelievable storylines
So i'm gonna go
After 20 years of trying 20 years of frustration brad keselowski overcomes a broken femur and wins
the Daytona 500
Last guy that broke his leg won the cup championship. So I could see I could see brad. I can get behind brad
I'm gonna go the the only penske guy left to not win the 500 is blaney
So i'm thinking that blaney's he's a previous winner at Daytona. It's gonna be hard to go back to back
I saw some stat like in the last 15 races the only guy to win
You know back to back super spear races is william byron like with the 500
But I think blaney, um, I think he's gonna be strong. He's always strong
And then my all-two season championship pick i'm gonna go back to william byron
I think that this
This the way he was the regular season champion last year
He's made it to the final four. So he's always good on points. He wins races him and rudie always have good days
And he's fast at every type of racetrack. There's some racetracks where you circle certain guys
But william's always up front road course short tracks super speedway
mile and a half
and
The way that the new system's gonna work with the chase
I think he can win the radio season championship and that carries him over and he's got a good enough team where if they get a
Points buffer they can just maintain and figure out how to win this championship
I think that's 2014
You're gonna be back on top
That's good. That's a good pick. Chris bell has always been in the hunt another championship four guy multiple years
He also strikes me as somebody that's that's
Pretty consistent that even though they do occasionally lay some eggs which over 36 weeks you're gonna lay some eggs
but
Once those guys get into the chase
I think they can lock it in and and make a deep run
Hashtag penny for your thoughts questions. You guys keep a rife on a minute from kyle. No, go 15
Is skip gonna call more races this year. He absolutely crushed the mod race
last night
No, go I really appreciate that. I am going to call um right now tentatively martinsville claremont and new hampshire
uh for the modified series, so
Love that love that opportunity and hopefully it turns into more. Yeah
From jacob pollen. Are we getting any new spp merch for date tona?
Um, no, you can go get the in guy. We have in guy. We trust hat though. That thing is sweet
Got a bunch of them in the in the office up there. I don't even we're
Lindsay is it on the website
quarterlyjoyracing.com
Backslash merch or link in my bio if you want those in god we trust hats
And I don't even think I said in the podcast. I think it just said it's somebody else
The only thing guaranteed his life is death death taxes and downforce
We were kicking around the idea of making that a t-shirt. I think that would sell alex mccullough any problems slash mods to your
Cummins tow rig
Uh, I haven't had I mean knock on wood. I've only had it's got 4 000 miles on it. So this is literally the first trip
I'm literally going from this podcast
Taking the star link put it in the brinkly and headed south me and levi
And some fellow coming to shoot some video and vlog with us
So I will let you know after the week now. I'll tell you that wrinkly unit those guys
I got hooked up with those guys. They that thing is sweet
Super efficient on space looks cool
um
Got a toy hauler in the back got the golf cart got bikes got all the stuff. So
Can't rock it any more truck racing this season. Yes
I have signed a deal for two races
Not ready to be public public with that yet, but it's gonna be pretty cool
And one I think one's gonna be in march and one's gonna be in may
So yeah, uh cj
Mcglashland 88 83 if you could bring back one track from the dead, what track would it be and why this is this is a great question
What do you think rod you hear it?
Oh man, that's a tough question. Um, if I could bring back one track from the dead
I'm not going with the cup drive going with flemington speedway
I thought flemington was awesome. It was in my home state, new jersey
I love going there that truck races there. It was square
Race like a circle. I would bring back flemington. I thought it was bad ass
Like a circle
What about you?
Texas world speedway keeps coming to mind
Two mile like michigan ahead of its time
So i'm gonna yeah, I'll go i'm gonna stick with texas world speedway. Good question guys
Let's land this bird. I'm gonna head south because it is too cold in north carolina. I need to get down to some sunny weather
All right guys
I am core of the joy. That's ryan flor as you are listening to stacking pennies. Give us five star review
Leave us comment all the stuff. Go check us out on youtube as well. Appreciate you guys have a fantastic week
Let's go to Daytona ladies and gentlemen. Let's go
About this episode
Speed Weeks energy fills the call as Corey LaJoie and co-host Ryan Flores break down Daytona 500 pressure, drafting “air” feel, and why the race often decides the winner more than perfect plans. Corey reflects on booth vs. driver stress, Speed Week camaraderie in New Smyrna, and the Next Gen pack/strategy shift that makes passing harder. They also trade takes on Super Bowl halftime chatter, Cadillac F1 controversy, Olympic sports moments, and even NASCAR’s old weight-weigh-in shenanigans. The show ends with 500 and championship predictions.
In this episode of Stacking Pennies, Corey LaJoie and Ryan “Skip” Flores dive into Daytona Speedweeks and the Daytona 500, breaking down what it takes to make the field and survive “The Great American Race.” From qualifying and the Duels to running up front at Daytona, they share garage-level insight on strategy, pressure, and the unpredictability of superspeedway racing, while also touching on Team USA, national pride, and what it means to represent something bigger when the spotlight is brightest.
