This is a show car (a concept) from MG. It’s meant to preview what a smaller MG could look like, and the speaker says it takes styling inspiration from older MG cars.
MG3 is MG’s current small car that the speaker uses to explain the size/positioning of the new concept. The idea is that the concept would be even smaller than the MG3.
The Metro 6R4 is an older, special performance version of the Metro. It was made with racing in mind, so it’s not just a normal everyday car. The podcast brings it up as part of a list of classic Metro-related models.
The MG MGB is an older sports car that was made for fun driving. People still talk about it because it’s a well-known model from the past. In the podcast, it’s mentioned as an example of an older car name.
Renault 5 is an older, famous small hatchback. The hosts are using it as a style reference, saying the EV design they’re talking about feels more like the Renault 5’s look than the current Nissan Micro’s design.
The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is a small electric car made by Renault. It uses an electric motor instead of petrol, and it’s designed to look like the older Renault 5. The podcast mentions it while comparing different small electric cars.
Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a new electric take on the old Renault 5 Turbo. In the conversation, it’s used as an example of the kind of cool design the hosts think other small EVs should be aiming for.
Car
Alpine 110 electric
Alpine 110 electric is an electric version of Alpine’s famous 110 model. The hosts are saying it’s one of the EVs people are especially excited to see revealed.
The BMW M3 is BMW’s performance version of the 3 Series. They mention it to illustrate that at big car shows, you often already know what kind of power and excitement to expect.
The Alpine A110 is a sports car known for being light and fun to drive. In the podcast, it’s mentioned in connection with an electric version, which is why it’s generating interest. The key point is that the A110 name is associated with sporty driving.
A front splitter is a low, flat aerodynamic panel near the front bumper. It helps the car’s airflow and downforce, and here it’s being used to compare the new MG’s styling to a race-car look.
“Bespoke” means it’s made to be special and custom, not just a standard off-the-shelf version. Here, it’s being used to say the car was built as a unique project rather than a quick styling change.
A body kit is a set of add-on parts that change how a car looks (and sometimes how it drives). The host is saying this Renault 5 Turbo project isn’t just cosmetic add-ons.
A chassis development driver is a test driver who evaluates vehicle dynamics—steering feel, suspension behavior, ride/handling balance—while engineers refine the car. Their feedback helps tune how the car responds in different conditions and at the limit.
It’s a special handbrake used in rally cars that can lock the wheels quickly. Drivers use it to help the car slide and turn more sharply when the road is slippery or rough.
A roll cage is a strong metal safety frame inside the car. It helps protect you in a crash and can also make the car feel more solid when driving hard.
Term
carbon develop
Here, “carbon” means carbon-fiber material used in the car’s structure. It can make the car lighter and stiffer, which helps it handle better.
Group B rally cars were a famous (and very extreme) type of rally race car from the 1980s. They were known for being incredibly fast and dramatic, and they helped shape rallying as we know it.
Mid-engine all-wheel drive means the engine is placed near the middle of the car, and the car drives all four wheels. That usually helps the car grip the road and feel more balanced when you’re turning and accelerating.
The Ferrari Luce is a car name mentioned in the podcast as something that was shown but not fully revealed. Cars like this are often concept cars, meaning they’re used to preview ideas. The podcast brings it up because it hints at future design or technology.
Wipers are the arms on your windshield that clear rain or dirt. They’re pointing out that this car’s wipers look especially unusual and stand out visually.
Term
bonnet height
Bonnet height is just how high the hood sits on the car. The host is saying that the car’s front shape and proportions can be hard to judge from pictures.
The Renault 4 is an older, inexpensive car people often use as a reference for low prices. Here it’s just part of the bargain comparison against the Volvo EX30.
The Volvo EX30 is Volvo’s small electric SUV. They’re talking about a deal on it and warning that in winter you may not get the full advertised driving range.
“Official range” is the distance the car is rated to get on a full charge using test rules. Real driving—especially in winter—can be worse than that number.
“kWh battery” means how much energy the electric battery can store. More kWh usually means more range, which is why they’re debating whether 73 kWh is enough or if a bigger battery is worth waiting for.
The Peugeot 308 is a compact car meant for normal daily driving. The podcast mentions it in the context of efficiency—how much energy it uses compared with other cars. The takeaway is that it’s part of a discussion about choosing a practical, efficient car.
The Peugeot 3008 is a crossover SUV. In this discussion, they’re talking about the electric version and how battery size affects real-world range, especially in winter.
The Peugeot 5008 is a larger crossover than the 3008. Here they’re comparing electric efficiency in winter and saying the 5008 does better for range and day-to-day use.
Stellantis is the company that owns multiple car brands. In this conversation, they’re saying Peugeot and DS are both part of Stellantis, so their EV tech is likely to be very similar.
The DS 7 is a premium SUV. Here, they’re talking about battery options—some versions use the same battery setup, so choosing the right battery size can change how far the car can go on a charge.
PCP is a type of car finance. You make monthly payments for a few years, and at the end you usually choose whether to pay a final amount to keep the car or hand it back.
The I.D. Polo is a planned electric version of a small Volkswagen-style car. They’re mainly talking about how high you sit and how easy it is to get in and out compared with other cars.
The Renault Twingo 3 is the third-generation Twingo city car. Here it’s brought up because the speaker says they sit higher in their Twingo 3, which matters for accessibility—especially for someone who needs an easier time getting in and out.
The Volkswagen ID Cross is an electric car that’s meant to feel more upright, like a small SUV. They’re saying it should be easier to sit in comfortably if a smaller car feels too low, because the EV layout changes the floor height.
The Volkswagen Polo is a small, everyday car. Here, they’re talking about how the car feels inside—especially how low you sit—compared with an EV, where the battery layout can change the floor height.
“Home chargers” are the EV charging units you install at your house. The point here is that you may have to pay extra for the charger itself and for getting it installed properly.
EV means electric vehicle—an electric car that you charge from a plug. The discussion is about how EVs can cost more than people expect once home charging is included.
The BMW iX3 is BMW’s electric SUV. Instead of a gas engine, it uses an electric motor and battery, and the host is saying they’ll try living with it without charging for a while.
Range means how far an electric vehicle can go before its battery runs low. The host is quoting a big number to explain what their “charge-free” experiment might look like.
Electric motorbikes are motorcycles that run on electricity from a battery. They don’t use a gas engine, and they can feel quick because the power comes on right away.
Car
Alpine 110
The Alpine 110 is a small, lightweight sports car made by Alpine. People love it because it feels agile and fun to drive, and it has a strong motorsport history.
The Volkswagen Golf is a popular small car (a hatchback) that many people use for daily driving. In the podcast, it’s brought up because the speaker is comparing it to other cars and saying it doesn’t excite them as much. It’s basically a reference point for what a typical compact car feels like.
“Seven-seater EVs” are electric cars that can seat up to seven people. That’s a tougher category for EVs because the battery takes up space, so fitting a third row is more challenging.
The Ioniq 3 is an electric car model mentioned in a comparison of small EVs. The podcast is basically grouping it with other similar cars to talk about how they stack up. The main point is that it’s part of the same “small electric” set.
The Alpine A290 is a small electric car mentioned in a group of similar EVs. The podcast is comparing it with other compact electric models. The key idea is that it’s meant to feel more sporty than a basic small EV.
The Skoda Epiq is an electric car model mentioned while the podcast compares small EVs. The discussion is about how these cars differ in the same general size and purpose. It’s essentially one option in a shortlist of electric models.
The Peugeot 208 GTI is a sportier version of the 208 hatchback. They’re mentioning it as a comparison option, even though the rest of the list is mostly EVs.
This is a sporty version of the Renault 5, made to feel fun and responsive to drive. The hosts are comparing another car’s driving feel to it—basically saying it’s not quite as sharp, but still very refined.
MEB plus is Volkswagen’s next step for its electric-car “building system.” It’s meant to make EVs better to drive and more practical than earlier versions of the platform.
Company
BW group
“BW group” is mentioned as the company behind the EVs being discussed, specifically in the context of bringing out cars that the hosts are excited to see and drive. The name is used as a shorthand for the automaker group associated with the MEB plus cars in this conversation.
Alloy wheels are wheels made from lightweight metal (often aluminum). The host is saying most people prefer them over steel wheels, including for the way they look.
Steel wheels are the simpler, heavier kind of wheel made from steel. The discussion is about whether people still like them when alloy wheels are so common.
This is a Volkswagen electric car (the ID3 Pro S). They’re talking about how using smaller steel wheels instead of bigger alloy wheels can make winter driving nicer and easier to maintain.
“Curb” in this context means the raised edge of the road you can scrape when parking or pulling over. The hosts are describing how wheel and tire overhang can lead to repeated curb contact, which is a common cause of cosmetic damage to wheels.
The Fisker Ocean is an electric SUV. This part of the discussion is about what happens after a company struggles—like whether the car’s software will still get updates and whether parts and support will be available.
Company
fiscal service
This “Fisker service” is described as a company created to help owners. The main job mentioned is keeping the car’s software working and updated.
Software updates are the digital fixes and improvements that get installed in the car. On an EV, they can matter a lot because the car depends heavily on electronics.
The Cadillac BLS is a smaller Cadillac sold mainly in Europe. Here, it’s mentioned because the owner needed a reliable way to keep the car running and find parts while Saab support was changing.
“Financial problems” means the company ran into money trouble. The speaker is saying that those troubles can lead to uncertainty for owners—like whether support and updates will continue.
Air suspension uses air-filled components instead of regular metal springs. The speaker is comparing it to the Fisker Ocean’s suspension to explain how the ride feels.
A Ford Ranger is a pickup truck, meaning it has a cargo bed for carrying things. The suspension is the system that controls how the wheels move over bumps, and different suspension types can make the ride feel softer or firmer. That’s why people talk about it when comparing comfort and driving feel.
Coil suspension uses metal springs. The speaker is saying the Fisker Ocean’s ride felt more like a normal steel-spring suspension than the air-suspension cars they’d driven.
Finance deals are ways to pay for a car over time with a loan or lease. The speaker is saying that when things went wrong, the lender handled the situation rather than customers eating the loss.
The steering wheel is what you use to turn the car. Here it’s mentioned because the speaker thinks the Ferrari’s interior controls feel more thoughtfully designed than typical EV setups.
LIVE
Hello and welcome to the Kilowatt Half Hour, a podcast about the world of EVs brought to
you by the team at electrifying.com.
Hey team, right, on this week's Kilowatt Half Hour we discuss all of the stars from
the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed from city cars, hypercars, I mean this was the year
when the festival went truly electric with some unbelievable cars that we got to see
for the very first time.
So we're also going to be answering your buying questions, we're going to take a look
through your thoughts on last week's episode, we're going to talk all the things, welcome
to the podcast, I'm Nicola, I'm Ginny, and I'm Mike, lovely, right, and how are you
feeling Ginny after Goodwood Festival of Speed because Goodwood broke me, it broke me so
much, I mean that roundup video was a lot of fun to make if you haven't seen that it's
on the channel, so we filmed on the first day of the show a video of what we thought
were the highlights which not surprisingly were electric, it's like you said some amazing
EV stuff there this year, it was so fun.
And then John T edited it pretty much overnight, finished at like 2am, and then the video went
up at 8 o'clock the next morning ready for everyone going off to the festival so then
you want to go and see, what to go and look at, but I think it was, I don't know whether
it was the 38 degree heat, the amount we walked or the fact that we may have frequented the
ace when arms for a pint and a sample fries, I don't know which bit broke me but some of
it broke me.
It was all of it, it was all of the above, and also I don't know if you had the same
but when I got back I like had a shower and I washed my face and the amount of dust and
dirt on my face was so dusty, it was like if you were going to go make sure you did not
wash your car beforehand because you go back out into the car park and every car was filthy
and so was my skin.
I know I did that horrible thing where you blow your nose and you go oh that's really
not pleasant.
So sorry about that.
Mike are you quite glad now you've heard Nicola and I talking about it that you gave
it a miss this year or were you watching from afar from your air conditioned lovely cool
office thinking I do actually quite wish I was there?
No, there was no feeling of a wish I mean obviously you guys did such an amazing video,
I felt like I was there so I didn't need to queue up for 20 hours and I mean last time
I went I was on my motorbike and I think I nearly died it was just horrendously hot
and yeah I think I'm getting over it now I think I'll go back maybe next year but I
think I'd give myself another year off this year but yeah it did look good.
It was good, it was good.
Just as somebody who wasn't there Mike what were the things that really caught your attention
from down there because obviously Nic and I got a lot of stuff that we saw first hand
but when you were sort of looking through the coverage that was coming back to the office
and the stuff that was coming back on video what were the bits that you thought were quite like that?
Well I think we kind of had an inclination that some of the bits were going to be there
so it was a case of seeing it for the first time in the metal.
The one thing that did survive was the MG, the MG Go concept which we kind of knew nothing
about we got our little heads up like a couple of nights before hadn't we that there was going
something there and I think it looks terrific it's a little kind of car that's going to sit below
MG3 might be called the MG2 I think that's up for an internal debate now but it looks
terrific all styled in the UK and they say it's got bits and pieces of the Metro 6R4 and the old
Metro Turbo and even it says bits of MGB which I can't quite see myself but the concept car
I really hope it looks like that because it looks kind of really chunky and beefy and
given MG's success in the UK I think that could be a really good package what was it like in the
metal? It looked great I didn't get to see it in the metal did you not? I didn't get to see it no
I went to see it and and do you know what I thought Nick and I thought of you when I saw it
because I thought this is what the Nissan Micro should have looked like this is this is the kind
of thing that I would have been hoping for from Nissan because it does it does look really great
and it definitely has more on the kind of Renault 5 cool design than the current Nissan
Micro design I thought it was a really cute thing and what was interesting in the videos
in that Renault video I mentioned we've got stuff in there from so you were with the Alpine Nick
and we've got that ridiculous Denza and we've got some stuff from the Luce and you did the new
that amazing M concept from BMW and then all the Renault 5 Turbo 3E but the go the MG go got loads
of comments from you guys so it's obviously really resonated with everybody that you all
really like the go so we're desperately trying to get hold of it to do a video to find out a bit
more about it but that was a nice sort of surprise because like you said Mike we kind of know everything
that's going to be there beforehand we do so that was a bit like oh we knew there was a secret from
MG we didn't really know what it was until right the day before which was good I think it's very
easy to kind of throw out something like especially when it comes to to good wood
speed because it's festival of speed you know that there's going to be a lot of cars that are
going to be launched and revealed that have got a lot of power underneath it so a bit like you
know the the new M3 that concept we know that it could be up to a thousand horsepower we know
that the Alpine 110 electric is going to be super exciting and then suddenly MG going here's a little
cute thing maybe you're like this adorable little thing and I honestly I thought I thought from the
it looks a bit like a mini in a good way I think yeah I do know exactly what you mean I do know
what you mean I can definitely see that I'm not sure I can see what do they say it look like Mike
an MG BGT can't really see that did they say no I can't see that I can see bits of I can see bits
of 6R4 in that kind of front splitter um but you know obviously clearly I want to make production
but yeah there was enough yeah MG B I couldn't see that in it but I could certainly bits of old
people say to be at 600 but um I'm not so sure yeah yeah maybe
well let us know as always what you think if it comments below or you can drop us an email
with your thoughts on the coverage in Goodwood podcast at electrify.com come and talk a little
bit about what we've all been driving or driven in yes because go on then go on do you want
do you want to just do it just I just do it I went for a drive in the Renault Renault 5 turbo
38 and it blew my mind I can't I can't I'm so annoyed that you've got that opportunity to do
you you gotta ride in something we're not allowed to talk about so
Nicola was given a passenger ride up the hill which she did and we're not allowed to tell you
about it we're not allowed to tell you what brand it was we're not allowed to tell you what car it
was because it turns out that Nicola should not have done it so if you want to guess in the comments
after I'd come back down the hill I came back down the hill and I had seven missed calls from
the PR team going you you shouldn't have been a passenger in that please don't say anything
please don't use any clips that you filmed in the car so everything we had filmed everything we
had prepped for my whole run up the hill had to be thrown in the bin and we're still not allowed
to talk about it but I had a great time so but was the ride that you can't talk about fun
oh yes yes it was but I can talk about the ride that I did so that Renault
honestly I've been doing this for such a long time and I think it's my favorite car
that I've ever that I've seen in the whole time I've been doing this job because it's not just
about what they've not done is just stuck a load of body kit on a Renault 5 right which would have
been quite easy so the whole thing is bespoke 1,980 of them they've sold over a thousand that is
of course a nod to the year the original R5 turbo came out and they've sold over a thousand of them
around 100 are going to UK buyers starts at 140,000 pounds comes with 10 I think it's around 10
standard deliveries and then you can spec whatever you want it's not got mental horsepower not well
it's still really got a lot of horsepower I can't remember 530 I think it is but I think in a world
where we've just seen lots of thousand horsepower you know straight line performance from EVs what's
lovely about this is just it was insane into the corners and it's just I was in with the
chassis development driver this very this very lovely lovely Frenchman who's been working on all
of that and it was just so much fun to drive and I cannot wait to drive it and I really want one
so it has inspired me to work a lot harder so I can earn some pennies to find myself one and be
one of those 1,980 people and I saw it for the first time in red it's in the red it looks utterly
amazing nice red really nice in I love that massive rally hydraulic
rally handbrake and I love the fact it's got a roll cage but he also said to me we've engineered
the chassis though so that you can drive it around town I was like oh so I can go to the supermarket
and it was like absolutely so they've not just created something I can go I want to go to Tesco
that's what I want to do get one of those in and take it to Tesco
so that that was one of the most fun things I've done ever in my career in this industry that car
because I just loved it when I saw it I really did and it lived up to my expectations it's just a
bundle of joy and happiness and guess what they call it a mini supercar and that is
my nickname you guys sometimes call me mini Ginny you call me that Nick don't we do yeah so it's
been made for me so Renae just has to send me one please because it's got my name on it
but that I loved I did love a lot okay good okay well now you mentioned it though I'm sure they
would just gift you one yeah and yeah I'm sure they will just for the 140 grand you know yeah
and then Renae and so Renae and then and also the good thing though is that that the the platform
and all the underpinnings for that carbon develop without alpines develop them so that's
going to form the basis for the alpina 110 which I think it's fair to say we are all very excited
about as well yes that's a big yes from me because the petrol version of the A-1
turn I love that car so much yeah so I'm excited I'm excited for the A-1 turn
my poster cars as a kid were group B rally cars because that was my era of being into cars so
mid-engine all-wheel drive generally based off a super mini like the prototype T16 and the Metro
6R4 so this car just ticks and it's electric it just ticks all those boxes for me I mean there
was a way I could find 140 grand to get one of those I would for sure selling a but no including
selling a body part I would do it because I think it just looks brilliant which body part would you
sell oh well some bits of my body really aren't worth anything it certainly wouldn't cover
right so yeah there was a friend of yeah there was a friend of mine there
Rob Gill who's the motoring editor at The Sun and I was saying a bunch of what he was like
put it through the business have it as the electrifying company car you could brand it
take it to things I was like let's talk to Ben our money man about that Mike what do you
reckon should we try and convince him yeah I mean doesn't really sign off but
train fares for people but I'm sure it'd be signing off a 140 grand but if it's officially a
company car like we all just like borrow it for maybe a couple of weeks of the year like we all
just get passed around the team oh this is a great idea I'm working on it him
other things that we saw there which I saw was the luce which was quite curiously hidden behind
a curtain on the back of Ferrari's stand so it wasn't available for everyone to see you
had to have a special invitation to see it and this is where I love that they did that it was
very funny they did that um I hate being wrong as you know I didn't hate it as much when I saw it
because I do think it looks better in the metal than it does in photographs it also makes a little
bit more sense when you see it and you cannot fail to be um you know the the bill quality on it and
the attention to detail and all those different elements I know you're smoking Nick I know you
are but the really weird thing is the wipers the wipers they look like like robot hands at the side
of it they're just the plonk ton at the side these massive wipers on the side of the windscreen
they look really weird they look like they've been added on extra but I know I'm not convincing you
Nick um you're still no I'm surely as well come on if you're if you're a car person it doesn't
need to just look good in the metal it needs to look good in pictures and videos as well because
you if you're proud of your car you tend to take photos and post it online and stuff and if it looks
crap in photos then don't bloody buy the car no I don't know it's me on that I'm afraid not to me
see I don't know if I'm that attached to Ferrari as a brand I've just never the supercar thing
has never been that that performance car has never been the thing that's got me a bit like Mike
I've been a hot hatch girl you know that it was those cars that I loved and maybe because
they were so unattainable to me that I don't I'm not that attached to Ferrari's heritage that I'm
a bit outraged by it and I guess what they're doing they're thinking that this will be a completely
new almost a new set of buyers that will come in and buy it it's not going to be the traditional
Ferrari owners so I don't know I thought it was when I saw it I thought it was actually really
interesting and it didn't offend me because I'm perhaps not as attached to Ferrari's heritage
in the way some are I don't know Mike are you you actually don't mind it do you
I don't mind it and I would I would like to have seen it in the metal
because I think there's a lot of surfacing on that car that doesn't come immediately obviously
you know that kind of front splitter the sort of bonnet height one where you can just see through it
and it just looks a bit of blob in the pictures they haven't helped themselves I don't think with
that but um yeah I don't have an objection to it because they were briefed to build something
that wasn't a Ferrari it wasn't a normal Ferrari so um yeah I think kind of answers that but
Nicholas still I'm going to stand I'm standing with the internet on this one okay should we
slap on this one bad Johnny Nick slap on this one that's it
oh dear so shall we should we move off Goodwood for a moment I was going to say
I think on the Electrifying YouTube channel either now or later on this week will be my
fourth date with the VW ID cross it will be it's on now it will be on now it's utterly brilliant
it is the best intro to a video I've ever seen in my life it's utterly brilliant there wasn't
a duvet involved if you haven't watched it already there was a duvet wriggling of feet
it is utterly brilliant as soon as you've watched this video head over there and watch it um you
can also watch a first drive in the Denza Z you can watch uh the Ferrari Duccio the updated
Aria the updated Aria ID the Goodwood Randall so we've got loads unless it's been such a busy
time and we've got loads of stuff coming as well it's not stopped yet so yes so there is a lot out
there um Mike let's move to things that are slightly more affordable than Ferraris and
Denza's and you know Renault 5 performance cars and talk about bargain of the week have you got
any bargains for us I've got a bargain of the week for you how do you fancy a Volvo EX30 for less
than the price of a Renault 4 but yes incredibly it does exist that's the deal this month it's on
200 and ninety pounds a month uh 2600 and thirty pounds down
8000 miles a year we had a complaint someone said oh you you're complaining about the
money up front so you never get that back well you don't get any of it back on at least so I'm not
really sure what all that complaint was about but uh because you end up paying it anyway whether you
pay in the monthly costs or whether you're paying the charge and usually they have a big
chunk up front because people are they're selling something or have a bit of cash to start with so
that's the reason why there's January and up front costs um used cars we've um
Thomas found a mocker remember when we first started Electrifying.com um Voxel very kindly
gave us uh a kermit green mocker for about six months was it do we have do you remember that
do any of you raise that from your memory I do remember it which which I quite liked and I know
Helen's children Helen had it occasionally and her children were very embarrassed when she was
picked they she picked them up from the school in it because it's literally the color was very
controversial I though with my love of all things green and my green Renault 5 Gold Yerda I quite
liked it so there you go well they're now those early cars are down to just like 10 grand you
know if you think that was probably a 30 grand car when that we were gliming around in it so um yeah
50 kilowatt hour battery 2021 with 43,000 miles on it is 10455 which I think you could completely
get down to under that's a really good deal yeah so there you go a word of warning on that though is
that you will need to be pootling because I know the official range is about 200 miles but that from
memory was very inefficient in winter I think that was maybe 120 it was like a 120 130 in winter so
yeah it's definitely not one if you're doing longer drives in winter unless you're able to
charge regularly good one we like those um so and yeah we're going to move on there to all of your
your questions should we do that um and don't forget if you've got any car buying questions
or you want to be a solo tube because you're our electric virgin of the week drop us an email
podcast at electrifying.com or stick a comment in the comments below um I'm going to do one now I'm
choosing a company car I quickly grabbed a Renault Seamiq while I have the chance even if the tax
benefit hadn't been so good I'd have still wanted it ignoring people's opinions on the range and
charging infrastructure you do that Ricky um one year 30,000 miles later I've rarely public charged
and couldn't be happier with my choice when changing my wife's car we would have loved enough for but
to deliver it at a 44 kilowatt hour frontera GS due to zero deposit and 220 pounds per month that
is a good monthly price isn't it. Really good monthly price. Thanks for the podcast on my commute
Ricky thank you thank you for joining us on your on your commute as well. Can we also go
shout out to Ricky for one year and 30,000 miles he drives a lot. Yeah a good spot. Blimey.
How do you know that bum Ricky? And then we've got um Cestus1234 who said we're picking up our
first EV and first ever brand new car that's really exciting next week Renault 4 iconic plus
torn between excited and terrified be excited because you will love it your reviews were pivotal
in our choice so we'll know who to blame if it all goes wrong thank you for that and let us know
what you think of it and don't be honestly don't be terrified we've got loads of guys and explainers
and if you've got any questions just honestly drop us an email podcast at electrify.com and
we'll either answer it ourselves or we'll chuck it out to the wider listeners to answer and I'm
sure you're gonna love it I mean Renault 4 we've been running one on the team now for a couple
of months and we're all really charmed by it so you've made a brilliant choice there. We've got a
message here from Connor by a podcast at electrify.com. Hi Connor. Hi guys new listener here I'm looking
at the Peugeot e300 GT or the new DS number seven as my as my first EV. I've driven the Peugeot and
I loved it. The main difference really is the battery size the DS has the bigger battery with
availability in a few months there's much longer waiting time on the Peugeot. Does a 73 kWh battery
do the job or is it best to get the bigger version on the Peugeot and wait 12 extra months? I'd be
interested to see in how these two cars come up against each other if possible. Oh I think we know
what the... Is that the only miles you need to do really? Yeah and I think I know what the answer
would be probably from you on that. I mean I've got to put my hand up here and say I haven't driven
the DS number seven actually spent quite a bit of time in the Peugeot 3008 but I think in terms of
efficiency you ran one for a while didn't you Nick? Did you run 3008? Yeah I had a 3000 as my
long term and it was a nightmare efficiency wise in winter pretty pretty bad. The 5008 I think is
actually pretty good but the 3008 efficiency wise during winter just was really struggling so I
personally I would lean towards a DS which I didn't think it's something I would say but here we are.
But also I think waiting for that bigger battery as well on the Peugeot waiting for the 12 plus
months I think may be worth doing because that you know we don't know we haven't actually had the
the bigger battery in and had it and really run it properly for a while but you're definitely
going to get more out of that but that smaller battery I think you will struggle a little bit
in winter if you want to do a lot of longer drives in that. Yes yes exactly so maybe take the DS
for a test drive if you can and see if you fall in love with it as much as you do with the Peugeot
because if you do then you know that it's you might as well just lean towards a DS but I mean the
battery tech that's in the DS is basically the same tech as what's going to be in the Peugeot
because they're all run by Stellantis anyway so they've all kind of very similar in terms of battery
technology underneath so I would maybe I would test drive the number seven if you could if you
get the chance. And I do like the way the number seven looks I think it's a really nice looking car
as well. Different yeah yeah it is but it's got basically yeah yeah anyway Mike any thoughts that
you want to chuck into it on that? Yeah I share Nicola's not love for the E3 2008 I think the
2008 is a lot better car but they haven't really shortlisted that one. Yeah DS all the way for me
I think it looks absolutely mad I mean I shuddered to think you didn't say how you're funding this
with if it's your own money I would perhaps do a few more sums in terms of how much that's going
to be worth in a while but if it's a company car or a company of lease or PCP then yeah I'd have a DS
seven every time. Although you know we do need to point out don't we that they do share the same
battery in the smaller battery size so you know if you are after something with more range and it
would be worth waiting until you know that Peugeot brings the bigger battery in but I think the
DS is a nice looking car it's very pretty. Yes. Yeah pretty. Right Mike what else have we got?
Well that was Ben just walking past I should have asked him about the Renault 5 shouldn't I?
Missed my chance. I have a question of the week for you another question of the week which I hope
you can help me out. It's from Karen Smith says I've watched all your reviews of the I.D. Polo
the launch event and the drive has helped me get very interested in the I.D. Polo. I'm wondering
if you can help me answer some questions I have related to it after driving and sitting in the
car. Inside the car seating getting out the car is on the same level as the Renault 5.
I've driven the standard Polo recently and I found it as a very low seat. I felt I had to climb to
get out. I currently drive a Renault Twingo 3 and sit a lot higher. I'm asking the question of the
issue of my mum is able to get out. This is my first electric car I'm keen to learn as much as I
can. If I go for the I.D. Polo I could be ordering without seeing apart from watching the reviews on
your channel so yeah either of you driven the I.D. Polo. Good to see you. We haven't driven it.
Oh you've driven the Polo. Yes you have. Yeah I love the Polo. It's bigger than the 5. It's bigger
so the space in the interior is bigger so it is ever so slightly higher than the Renault 5 if
you've ever sat in one of those. So if you do think that the 5 is too low for you then the Polo
I think would probably just be about right. It's not kind of SUV size but you can kind of picture
the size of an I.D. 3 for you guys to kind of sit in and drive it. It's very similar to that kind
of size. It's close enough to that than it is to a Renault 5 and yeah if it's your mum getting in
and out I think she would I think she'd be okay because it's not it looks like a small car but
it's not a teeny tiny car like the Renault 5 is and also it's great so it's a really really good car.
It is. I haven't driven it but I've sat in it and filmed with it and I thought it was
adorable and lovely and from memory and I was desperately trying to wrap my brains then but
you do I had a 5 for 12 months and it is quite low to the ground you're obviously right
and I think from memory Nick said it does feel slightly more upright but it's not it's not ID
Cross is it which is you feel more upright and it's more like the little mini SUV but it's definitely
not as low as a Renault 5. So yes let us know. So if you do get a chance to sit inside the Polo
if you get a chance to go to a dealer and sit inside a Polo and you do find it's still too small
then maybe consider the ID Cross because it's still just as good in a slightly bigger body.
Yeah yeah yeah and it's definitely slightly higher as your question was suggesting than the
standard you know the the current Polo it's a different car completely different underpinnings
it's got the battery in there so you're not going to sit as low to the ground as you do in the
current Polo. Right loads of comments came in from last week so we've got a Wagner Gaimanes.
It's Gaimanes who says. It's Gaimanes. It's Wagner Gaimanes I think because
Wagner is a regular I think so. Okay hi. Okay ecstatic to see the electrifying half hour plus
20 minutes. And then you've got Alan Gravy 27 who says I stop listening to these because they're
too long keep them to 30 minutes or less if you have valuable content do another episode.
All right oh hello calm down. Dave Lawrence 594 says can you please explain why everyone buys an
EV has to pay for the home chargers and fitting isn't buying an EV already expensive enough
then you have to be buying the home chargers plus fitting it is ludicrous. Oh do you know what Dave
I'm going to get on my rant with Dave on this one I think it's utterly ridiculous. You know
this electric car ground that the government came out with I think that money should have
gone into funding charges I really do because if you're buying like we're just talking about that
Vauxhall Mocha like £10,000 for a really decent EV and then suddenly well £1,000 plus to get a
charge fitted why is there not a grant they took the grants away for the home chargers too soon
and I think the government should absolutely done that and I think it will help boost the used EV
market and as we all know that's great for new sales I completely agree I think you know Dave
Dave I'm with you if you want to start a petition Dave you send me a link to it I'll sign it
okay good anybody anybody anybody joining us let us know. Yeah then you've got an Urban Strencan
who says oh this is a good one for Mike could we get some electric motorcycle reviews great solution
for city commuting. Your Urban Strencan thank you very much for sending this your wish is Mike
Munn I've got two Honda electric motorbikes coming in in 48 hours time and I am losing
sleep with excitement about having these two. By the way you two while I've got you on when I was
booking those in the lovely PR chap at Honda said he wants to put you both through your bike test
on Honda. Yes I'm in we're doing it. There are many hundreds of people that
listen to this podcast are my witness you both said yes you'll do it. 100% 100% yep okay and also
can I also just say in answer to that thing that I said about a year and a half ago that I was going
to go charge a free for a month just to see what it's like I am going charge a free for six weeks
from the middle of August because I'm moving house and I'm not going to have a charger so
that promise that I made I'm finally going to deliver on it and yes I know it's not in the
dead of the winter but it still will be interesting I think so I'm going to be charge free and yes
I know I'm going to do it in a BMW ix3 with a range of 500 miles. Yeah but I am doing it
and we will do our bike test but only if we can do it together.
So I would love to do that but I've always wanted to do my bike test. That's a good video
absolutely. Can we do it on electric bikes? Is it going to be on electric bikes?
It's going to be on electric motorbikes. Honda want to give you the bikes to do it yeah yeah yeah.
Mike if you could organise that we are definitely in brilliant. I want all the gear I'm so ready for
this. I'm going to make it my whole personality. All the gear no idea. Yeah exactly. So we're going
to get so just coming back to this one from so from Urban Strack and Mike can I just say
Urban Strack and I know is a regular Urban Strankan rather a regular listener and regular
commenter on the podcast so you did actually ask him to send that in didn't you? You've messaged
him. Yes you have. I was thinking of faking a letter emailing in from somebody
but I got fed up trying to set up a fake Google account so I gave up and then some miracle he
messaged I think he leaves it twice on the last episode about electric motorcycles so yeah
you'll wish Mike. Well we're in. We're in and we're in and it's happening and it's good and
also Mike's reviews on electric motorcycles will be coming to the website soon. You might do some
YouTube shorts as well I think is that right Mike? That's my plan. Good we're
looking forward to it. Okay specialsirks are sent a comment oh don't be a shill for Ferrari batch
they don't need you to do that they have the most exclusive elitist approach to customers I don't
think they're to be admired okay don't mention why it's there I know sorry I've probably joined in
a bit and yeah I've got to say I'm not massively excited about that car I'm so much more excited
about like the Alpine 110 or the thought of an electric motorbike or the thought of that Renault
that Renault at £140,000 is so much money but it thrills me 450 grand Ferrari doesn't thrill me as
much anyway. No just the Polo GTI would just be great just be great. Yeah the Revalvi Z I'm excited
for the Revalvi Z. Beautiful. Just like we don't need the big expensive stuff do we? No you don't
what a time to be alive everyone well done. Oh good have you got some oh we had we were
requesting group test ideas weren't we so we had a lot of good suggestions so if you picked out
some of your favourites Nick which what should we do? Right so we've got um Brian Davis 6074 who
says a peaky blinder would be a big group test of seven seaters EVs now dominate and the price
rain charging load load space utility luxury size matrix has become very complex unravel it for us
please. We're asking us to get all seven seats together. That's a good idea. That's a big turn.
We've got yeah that's huge but yeah that's a that's a long day filming. I think we need to do that
before the we'll do it before the clocks go back though. Yeah deal yeah good show and then Richard
Piper 4828 who says are your suggestions for EV twin test or triple test can I put forward the
following the ID Polo versus the Renault 5 versus the Ioniq 3 versus the Cooper Reval and the Alpine
A290 versus the Peugeot 208 GTI the Skoda Epic versus the Renault 4 and Kia EV2. Wow again are we
just going to do all of it where they're all together because I just I don't think I can
multiply myself that many times. I mean I'm giving it a go. We have done a video where there were
five nickels but I think even this is stretching it isn't it? There is a line somewhere. There was
a video where we shot five versions of you for a video. Can I just say behind the scenes of that
video I had to run in and get changed so often of like we're now going to do this what version of
B is this? Blue top, blue top! Run in quickly get changed on the blue top go out do like a very
short piece of camera do that right what's next yellow top yellow top run back in change my top
that I don't I can't help me. We won't we won't but Richard went on to say that
he tested over Cooper Reval at the weekend and was mightily impressed I know as of we've been
not as pretty as the Renault 5 Alpine A290 not quite a sharp to drive but could not get over how
refined it was to drive and its marginally larger size makes it more practical the MEB plus quartet
appear to be a return to BW at its best and I think we'd agree with that wouldn't we and this
has been one of the stories that we've all been happy about the Shear Mike don't you reckon
that just seeing BW group coming out with cars that we've all gone out to see and come back and
gone oh it's good what's good and it looks great we waited long enough didn't we but finally I think
that yeah I think these MEB plus cars this sort of second second and a half generation electric
cars that are just really the ones yeah they go perfect aren't they so they're really good I'm
really looking forward to when they're out and about yeah and and I think we will do some kind
of group test with them all but I'm not sure Richard would be able to include all of those
but if you aren't already do subscribe to the channel because we actually are filming with
a few of the cars that you've mentioned in that list over the summer so we will have some quite
fun stuff coming for you in the autumn so if you're not already make sure you subscribe
Mike what have you got for us well last week we mentioned wheels steel wheels in particular
and whether they had any love in the greater thing because I'm convinced that everyone just
wants alloy wheels and there's any journalists that might steal wheels but obviously I'm wrong
again so at Julian Allen 515 says I'm with Ginny and Nicola on team steel wheels and long boys
there you go you can use in your term I spent the last 16 years I spent the last 16 years in
Canada and I know how winter tyres come into their own my ID3 Pro S has 20 inch alloys but I bought
18 inch steelies for my winter tyre set and I much prefer them the riding efficiency and cleaning
up all improved so there we go oh I love it when we're right don't you Nic it makes me so happy
because we're wrong quite a lot of the time it's so sad to see you so and and Martin Gilles that
has 6996 says I still believe there's a market for a paired back no power powered tailgate equality
EV concentrating on the comfort essentials with steelies long range and buttons so there you go
you've got buttons as well Martin 100% can I just say that power tailgates drive me mad they they
always stop like a power tailgate that's because you're lazy come on it's because you're bougie and
lazy yeah that's true I always want to just jump mine halfway I'll forget and then pull it down and
it gets stuck or it goes on my head or I like a manual I wish the buzz had one I mean there
were about 300 kilos the tailgate I can't open the I can't close the buzz tailgate I just can't
I can't do it unless it's I can't reach it I'm too little like that to pick up
I have to phone mic up Mike come and close the buzz for me help Mike
and finally there's Hanon 6402 says bring full stop back full stop steel full stop wheels
through exclamation marks alloys are a pain for any practical car I've managed to curve all four
wheels on this on this buzz and I haven't curved a wheel in 16 years but there's something about
the tires and the wheel the tires the wheels actually overhang the tires on a buzz so and three of
them are caused by I've had an ambulance behind me or a fire engine I pulled onto the curb quite
you know to get out of the way and it's done this it's done the alloys every time so yeah it's the
older the older ambulance that old chestnut all right Mike if that's what you
tell yourself Mike Nicola and I are absolutely fine with that don't worry it's okay
you come on it to get teased by us you know you do he loves it really does he does
um right fiscar ocean so this was a story we had on the pod where um they are trying to
offload the receivers are trying to offload the last remaining fiscar oceans and we're saying
would you buy one and the company's been set up called fiscar service which is saying that it
will be able to take care of all the the software and obviously it's the software updates that are
the really big thing so we had quite a good response to that which was uh Brendon O'Leary 519
said I owned a Cadillac BLS during the death throws of Saab it was interesting to keep on the road
when I needed spare parts whilst the Saab parts supply recovered bespoke BLS parts like body
panels were a non-starter and not all the software talked to Saab specialists it'd have to be something
special to go through that pain again in the fiscar isn't special enough for me um Tim Oliver 8940
said I agree with Ginny about the fiscar ocean I had one short test drive followed by a much longer
one was about to order a one as I thought it was a great car in all respects apart much of the
software was coming later and I read on all the forums that they were having financial problems
in the company that was the problem wasn't it that all those rumors were starting to circulate
the one thing I found was that having driven air suspension ranger overs and ranger over sports and
now defenders the oceans coil suspension was the closest steel suspension I've ever experienced at
air springs it was a good car it was a really good car and I think it is such a shame I'm still
not sure that it would tempt me enough um Brian Davies 6074 I feel really sorry for the people
who paid full price for the fiscar it seemed a good proposition one that would support family life
for a long time doubtless there are poor souls who dug deep into a loan and made an outright purchase
I'm surprised that a legacy manufacturer underrepresented by Evie's hasn't brought out the
designs jigs and tooling that is really true now I know the answer to this question though about
what happened to all those people who had finance deals they were all bought out of their finance
deals so I um I was chatting yeah I was talking to the person who worked for the company well this
is my understanding anyway I've been told this by the financial services company that underwrote
a lot of those deals that they were bought out so it wasn't customers that took the hit it was
apparently um the the finance company I guess there may be people out there who had paid cash
and that wouldn't be great for them um but because obviously they will have lost so much money but I
think the deals were were underwritten but if you have a fiscar well that's something yeah do
there's someone around the corner for me that's got a fiscar ocean I keep seeing it by the co-op
go and have a chat with them next time um and then uh I did come around it once to try and wait for
them but I'm still waiting for the opportunity moment to actually see them in person and go
why did you do this but but maybe you guys live close to this person hht gtyg hyphen use 6g which
is not a snappy youtube handle but it's a beautiful name round the corner for me someone has a fiscar
ocean looks great so maybe you're all neighbors oh maybe down in horsham yeah I always see it
parked up at the co-op I see it all the time and I will find them one day and have a chat with them
yeah okay um should we leave the last word to the luce the controversial luce well I mean
yeah I mean there were still loads of comments that are coming in about that bloody ferrari so
Christopher nun 1536 a ferrari luce is very color dependent I think which I think is kind
of a fair point there from Christopher then you've got voxdose says congratulations to ferrari for
selling 88 luce's in china oh okay well done uh then you've got Joe do you want to say that again
and try and be sincere well done uh Joe king dan's 5038 let's go with that the ferrari is actually
quite interesting not sure about the look but the interior is better than anything steering wheel
consoles etc they're showing how a car could be built instead of those anonymous evs that just
pop up with an ipad on the dash and that's it you know what that's a very fair point they've made it
different they haven't made it like every other ev and I kind of understand that and then you've
got nb 280 sl seven who says I very much like the ferrari luce it's really a stunning looking car
well you're wrong about that but just shows you know if if we all agreed it'd be a boring old
world wouldn't it and the one thing I'll say in answer to the fact that it's the interior is better
than anything you would really hope it would be because it starts at 450 000 pounds but the interior
is a that's ridiculous it's beautiful when you see it you actually go oh you know what oh it's so
nice in here it is beautiful there's some very clever things that they've done the key is a work
of art the key is is magical but anyway yeah you'd want it to be wouldn't you yeah yeah yeah are we
done is that it no okay okay are we done I'm only distracted because the wasp
in the car and it keeps you going for me and if I'm on here any longer it's going to get me so are
you kidding me Mike no I'm calling in the car well no I mean he might dive on me a couple
Mike it's 38 degrees again and there's there's a delivery driver outside I don't understand wasps
they're little evil bastards they have no purpose and they're only out to hurt you they're horrible
things okay I think this is a cue to leave everybody and say thank you for joining us the
kilowatt half hour plus 10 or 15 minutes before Mike gets attacked by a wasp and Nicola loses it
completely um we'll see if he's there too long Ginny's going to have to start paying the wasp
and we don't have to do that so let's let's say bye now it's good to be to let us let us know all
all your comments below and you can email us podcast at electrify.com
and thanks for joining us goodbye bye
About this episode
Goodwood Festival of Speed footage sets the tone: the hosts say “the festival went truly electric with some unbelievable cars,” then zero in on standout reveals like the MG Go concept, with “bits and pieces of the Metro 6R4 and the old Metro Turbo.” The conversation turns to Renault’s “Renault 5 turbo 38,” described as “bespoke 1,980 of them” starting at “140,000 pounds.” Later, the show pivots to EV reality—winter range drops, charging costs, and battery-size tradeoffs—plus listener questions and upcoming tests.
Goodwood Festival of Speed went electric in 2026 — and the team were there to see it all.
This week, Ginny and Nicola report from Goodwood with the standout new EVs, from the MG Go concept and electric BMW M3 to the forthcoming Alpine A110. Mike, meanwhile, definitely wasn’t at Goodwood.
We also discuss a Volvo EX30 lease bargain, a tempting used Vauxhall Mokka Electric, and answer your questions on choosing a first EV, depreciation, the Peugeot E-3008 versus DS N°7, and whether the Volkswagen ID. Polo will be easy to get in and out of.
Plus: steel wheels, Fisker Ocean ownership, Ferrari Luce opinions, electric motorcycles and your suggestions for the ultimate EV group test.
