00:00
In a world with entirely too many shows about cars, this is another Pointless Automotive
00:17
Welcome back to another Pointless Automotive podcast.
00:21
Was that a burp or what the hell was that, dude?
00:23
Yeah, it was a weird noise.
00:24
Yeah, it was not good for anything.
00:26
Brought to you by Frank Spodely Functions.
00:28
Frank Achadwick with you again.
00:31
As always, how's it going, guys?
00:34
Frank, how are you doing, man?
00:35
It's been a little bit.
00:37
It's been a little bit.
00:38
Things have happened since we have last talked, and we have not talked since the last recording
00:45
So this is organic, I suppose, organic, orgasmic car convo.
00:57
So this will be good.
00:58
And so, I mean, yeah, what have you been up to, sir?
01:01
Yeah, no, a few things.
01:03
The big thing I want to focus on has been a really cool event, the Sierra Rally, thrown
01:08
by the wonderful folks at DWA.
01:09
I'm wearing the shirt if you're watching at home.
01:14
So DWA Rally, Sierra 2025.
01:16
I think it's the fifth Sierra Rally they've hosted.
01:19
And we had, what made it extra special for us is we had our cheap car challenge
01:25
going on, our $3,500 budget, which I'm sure you got an update for us.
01:30
Again, I have an update about what may or may not have happened in my $3,500 car during
01:37
So let's recap that action because I think there's some good stuff there.
01:41
I think the whole story of our cars is also good stuff in itself.
01:44
So yeah, and I am, I'm very interested to hear what happened on the rally because
01:49
You were sorely missed.
01:51
And that was by design.
01:53
Well, not by design, but this was a known thing.
01:57
That was going to be part of the deal was I was deeply over double booked and overextended.
02:03
And so I was not going to be able to make it on the rally physically.
02:07
I was there emotionally, spiritually, metaphysically perhaps.
02:13
But so I was not there.
02:15
And so the whole thing was stay the course, get the focus SVT ready to rock.
02:24
Send it in the the care or or or miscare of a driver to be named later.
02:33
And so last we left our heroes, the Axel had decided due to my poor, not torquing down
02:45
of bolts for the cap on the carrier bearing on the passenger side, Axel.
02:49
To be fair, you have you have a very aggressive finger titan.
02:53
So I mean, it's not like it was dangling off.
02:56
I mean, you put some you put some fingertip torque on some, some, some fingertip Angadungas
03:00
and unfortunately, I should have put it at 20 foot-pounds, which I did not.
03:05
I remember I went back and I even went back and sure enough, that's what it was.
03:08
So got it all back together, drove it, seemed great, hustled it down a road, cool.
03:15
Let me tackle this lower radiator hose.
03:18
I had purchased one when I was back under there doing the Axel.
03:23
I noticed like, yeah, man, like, yes, the thermostat housing shows signs of age and
03:30
that it's leaking from a couple of spots, of course, but really the worst off was by
03:36
far this lower radiator hose, which is like a like a like a Y shaped pain in the junk.
03:45
One goes to the lower radiator.
03:47
One then goes to a like an upper upper goes up to like the top of almost like you would
03:59
expect the top of the radiator, but it's like it's like a small crossover pipe that goes
04:03
along the upper tie bar.
04:06
And so it's a smaller outlet.
04:07
It's like maybe three quarter of an inch.
04:08
If this this is all one piece to all one piece.
04:13
It's got a molded T section in it.
04:16
And then that skinny piece that goes up has a an integrated like mylar metallic looking
04:27
Then the lower section, the other lower section.
04:29
So the other leg of the Y goes into this extreme pain in the ass between the AC compressor
04:39
and the power steering pump.
04:47
And so it goes in between there with a pinch, a pinch clamp.
04:52
So it was a motherfucker changing it out.
04:57
I got the ax all back together.
04:59
This was on literally we're talking guys.
05:03
So your car broke down four days before the rally.
05:06
So now we're talking Thursday night.
05:11
Tuesday night before the rally and realistically Thursday early, early, early morning would
05:17
been the absolute soonest because I was hitting the road to drive down the Southern California
05:27
And then there's like the half unofficial start Thursday evening.
05:34
But like real, real start Friday morning, but I was going to be gone for all that.
05:37
So I had to have this thing sorted and, and in the hands of a capable or incapable driver
05:43
to, you know, Thursday morning at, you know, 11am the absolute latest.
05:51
So put it in, it's like 1030 at night on Tuesday.
05:56
I got a swapped out extreme pain in the junk.
06:00
It was like two and a half hours just to do this lower radiator hose.
06:04
All of it just like pure frustration the entire time.
06:08
Get it, get it all swapped out, put together.
06:11
I didn't think there was ever going to have a chance of getting the hose clamp on there
06:14
because I was going to have to reuse that pinch clamp because I couldn't, there's no
06:19
access anywhere to even remotely get like a, like a screw type hose clamp on it.
06:25
Yeah, dude, that thing was assembled with the engine out of the car.
06:31
And I could have pulled the AC compressor or the power steering pump and I desperately
06:35
did not want to do that.
06:37
So got all together, right?
06:40
Yell that a scream that it got it back together, got the coolant topped up, right?
06:45
So then Wednesday morning rolls around, right?
06:51
I take it, I take it for a, what I did was, so here's the thing.
06:56
I also budget in mind for all of this, right?
07:01
Because I was right up against the budget.
07:03
It was within whatever, 60 bucks or less than that, more than that.
07:06
It was like $151, but then I had to buy some coolant.
07:14
And I was worried about, because I don't know how much
07:19
MTF I lost out of the transmission because it towed from fricking Santa Cruz
07:26
with the axle not seated.
07:29
And when the tow truck picked it up, I watched it dump a whole bunch of transmission fluid.
07:34
So I decided to get sneaky, right?
07:36
Because I looked, I was like, OK, this thing's like 2.2
07:39
Quartz capacity, 20 bucks for a quart of MTF from the local place on the street.
07:49
And I might need two of those, right?
07:51
Because I might have lost more than a quart.
07:53
And so, OK, so I have to mentally budget $40, so get two of them, right?
08:00
And I still hadn't done the oil change yet, which I was going to do.
08:04
And so I was like, you know what?
08:06
What if I and so that would the oil change, you know, oils,
08:09
you know, for a five gallon jug is, you know, 30, 34 bucks.
08:15
And I got a rock auto got a motocraft filter for six bucks.
08:21
Proper motocraft filters.
08:22
So I was like, OK, if I do the math, I'm sitting at like, you know,
08:25
I'm going to be like $90 just to do the engine oil change
08:30
and potentially top up this.
08:34
Transmission with no time on the clock.
08:37
Like, yeah, up against it, because I have to like work in shit.
08:40
I've got to get done, right?
08:42
This is not the only thing I need to accomplish
08:44
before I disappear on midday the next day.
08:48
So I'm under 24 hours at this point.
08:50
So I have this idea.
08:51
I'm like, hey, right down the street for me is like.
08:56
Drive through oil change place.
08:57
And I know they do free top ups.
09:01
Hey, man, if can I come through and bring my own oil filter?
09:06
And then you guys do the oil change.
09:11
Axel, blah, blah, blah.
09:12
Can you top up my I know you got to free top up.
09:15
Will you just top off my manual transmission?
09:19
Sure, buddy. Yeah, that's fine.
09:21
We'll put the same thing that we put in your engine
09:23
in your transmission.
09:23
But yeah, I said, hey, this is what it takes.
09:25
It takes seventy five ninety.
09:26
Like, like this is like, oh, yeah, we have it.
09:28
It's it's blah, blah, blah.
09:30
It's not an exotic fluid.
09:32
OK, sure enough, I drive it.
09:36
I died at two thousand RPM in second year.
09:39
I just it's like two blocks from my house.
09:42
Limp it in there. Sure, shit.
09:44
He's like, oh, yeah, it took a little bit over a court
09:46
and that transmission free dollars.
09:47
They charge me no money for it.
09:49
Oh, that's awesome.
09:49
The oil change with like, they're like synthetic,
09:53
you know, burp, burp, burp, burp, burp.
09:56
With my filter was like 70.
09:59
It was like 70 bucks out the door.
10:01
So it saved me like fifteen dollars.
10:04
Hell, yeah, right up against the budget
10:07
because I was like, OK, like.
10:09
So I did that, got it topped up
10:11
and then I went and took it on a rip.
10:12
I ripped it up and down my local twisty road.
10:18
And I got back and I was driving it back up.
10:20
I remembered, oh, shit, AC, AC is up, low and cold,
10:23
because there's a pigtail that connects to that AC compressor.
10:28
And I disconnected it because it didn't work.
10:30
I didn't want to fuck it up.
10:31
Right. Getting this pain in the ass.
10:33
I was like, oh, shit, I got to reconnect it.
10:36
Get back to the house and a park it and I'm cool.
10:40
I smell cool smell.
10:41
Yeah. So I go back to go plug, plug the singing, right?
10:45
And I was just like, well, maybe it's just like,
10:47
you know, air in the system, it's belching, whatever.
10:51
I go to reconnect it and there's coolant.
10:54
Oh, shit, right where I did this house.
10:56
I was like, oh, shit, did I like not get that hose clamp on or whatever?
10:59
And I'm looking and I'm like, no, all of that stuff's great.
11:01
It's not leaking from any of the connecting points.
11:04
And I look and where on this fucking gates replacement hose,
11:09
fifty one dollar and whatever sent her
11:13
that molded junction.
11:15
And I noticed it had some like it looked like
11:18
almost like you're almost like casting flash like on this.
11:21
Yeah, yeah, where there's like it's kind of like kind of peely layers
11:25
in the middle of it and didn't think of the thing of it.
11:28
And it's leaking from that.
11:30
God, so it is a defect within this molded junction.
11:34
It's just like weeping coolant out of it
11:37
to enough to where it's like drips on the ground.
11:40
That's significant. Yeah.
11:44
You cannot run a rally in that.
11:45
It's just it's no way, let alone me
11:48
handing the keys to somebody and saying like, have fun with it.
11:52
With that thing on boil and temp near boil.
11:54
That thing was bleed out the entire time.
11:56
Yeah, or just it would just fail.
11:58
Yep, it would just fail catastrophically
12:00
and you just 100 percent dump.
12:05
And at this point, I'm like, fuck, man,
12:07
I've got to get work done today, believe it or not.
12:09
And I like, I still had to drive out to
12:12
Nevada to do a photo shoot and come back.
12:14
And I'm like, shit, can I conceivably get this done?
12:17
I was like, if I was like the only way I would have time
12:22
is if I one of the several people that I've reached out to
12:26
tell me, like, yes, I definitely will drive it
12:29
and I will swap out the part.
12:31
Like I would have to like say, like, yeah, you can drive the car.
12:33
You have to change this part out because I don't have the time.
12:36
That would have been the only way to do it.
12:38
And then I couldn't I could not find a replacement hose.
12:41
So I bought it from like the local monument car park.
12:43
They're like, oh, shit, that sucks.
12:44
Like, man, we're sorry. Yeah.
12:46
Bring it back. We'll swap it out.
12:47
They can't get when they're like, hey,
12:50
I can't get one period.
12:51
Like this was the only one from our wholesale suppliers.
12:55
I can't get another one.
12:56
Rock Auto shows that they have a few.
12:58
I don't know how quickly you can get one from Rock Auto.
13:00
I'm like, not same day.
13:04
So I called around and called around and called around.
13:06
And no, this is your peril before we even got to the round.
13:09
Like this is the brand new fucking leading up to the rally
13:12
in the parts failure and which happened in motors failure.
13:15
But it's just like leaking out of the center of the hose.
13:20
Fifty something dollars.
13:22
The only one I can find was I called Napa Auto parts.
13:29
And they're like, oh, that one is, you know,
13:32
NLA, we can't get it.
13:34
But I do show we do have one that should work.
13:39
I'm like, all right, what's the part number?
13:40
And it was like whatever it was, it was like continental part number.
13:45
And like, well, it doesn't have that heat shield thing.
13:48
And the junction was like a hardened plastic.
13:53
But like the shape was not quite right.
13:56
And it listed for like just the ZX five, not the SVT.
14:01
OK. And I'm like, and it was like 17 dollars
14:03
instead of like, or no, sorry, sorry, sorry, it was 70 dollars.
14:07
Oh, it was like 70 to whatever.
14:12
And they would have been they would have been able to
14:13
like transfer it from another store.
14:15
So it would have been there like nine a.m. the next day.
14:20
And it might not have been the right.
14:25
With no time left on the clock.
14:27
And so it's just it was it was going to be an impossibility.
14:30
So ultimately that was it.
14:32
I ordered the part on Rock Auto, the gates part, the one I have,
14:37
it is no longer, they do no longer make it,
14:39
but they have it on closeout on on on Rock Auto for 17 dollars instead of 51.
14:45
But I decided to, you know, fool, fool me once, shame on me.
14:49
Yeah, fool me twice.
14:50
So I just swiped. They had it.
14:52
They had a I think AC Delco had one, which is the enemy, but whatever.
14:57
So got the AC Delco part for my Ford.
14:59
It arrived on Wednesday.
15:00
I haven't touched it.
15:01
But both I officially, against best efforts,
15:06
I'm collecting a DNF, my friend.
15:08
Yeah, yeah, dude, it's it's such a bummer
15:11
because I know I knew after I found out you weren't going
15:14
to find out your car wasn't going to make it either.
15:16
It was super sad and ran good, too.
15:20
To be honest, our trip down to Santa Cruz
15:22
was pretty good for most of that trip until it wasn't until it wasn't.
15:27
But I will say I definitely didn't celebrate day one of the rally
15:32
because I knew something could happen at any given time.
15:34
And it showed itself on.
15:37
Was it day two or day three?
15:38
Spill the beans because I you as as I know, like we haven't talked
15:42
and I haven't talked to anyone who's been on the rally.
15:45
So all I've seen was
15:49
various Instagram posts of like people hanging out in parking lots.
15:53
Like I assume nobody got kidnapped by ICE.
16:02
various mechanical breakdowns, but I'm assuming nothing too catastrophic.
16:08
But so yeah, first off, the rally itself.
16:12
Getting up there, I went up there.
16:13
Thursday night, I got caught in some work, which happens as it is
16:18
So, you know, got my shit together.
16:20
I was working on the car up until I know that morning
16:23
motors was like four days before the rally.
16:25
I my car was on a jackstand that night before we went there.
16:29
After that, I did do some small stuff.
16:31
So I still had all my work to do.
16:33
I did it all within a week and a half period.
16:35
But for that period, I was good to go.
16:37
The car was driving really good.
16:39
So no issues, weather interesting, rain, thunder, lightning
16:44
on the way up there.
16:45
It's a little bit of a drive.
16:45
It's a little over two hours.
16:49
But, you know, all will drive in the rain.
16:51
Not an issue, right?
16:53
Yeah, fresh tires, good windshield wipers.
16:56
Everything was working great.
16:57
I got up there Thursday night, kind of hung out a small hang.
17:00
Woke up the next morning downpour during the driver's meeting.
17:04
We're all in like this gazebo, just fucking coming to a torrential rain.
17:09
So we're all gathered in there.
17:10
There were like 100 person, 100 people in attendance, 80 something cars.
17:15
So it was a huge turn out.
17:17
That's a big turn out.
17:18
Yeah, dude, I'll hit some of my highlight cars in a second here.
17:21
But good, good turnout.
17:22
So usual suspects, some new people, some different cars.
17:26
It was a cool scene.
17:28
Start off in the rain, man.
17:30
Immediately we hit this dilapidated, horrible road.
17:34
It was like it was like washboard asphalt and it just rattled everyone's car.
17:39
So it was a tough start, man.
17:41
It cleared up a little bit and got good.
17:42
But day one was tough.
17:45
The car performed great.
17:47
At one point it was on like a single lane road and a minivan was flying the other way
17:52
and I had to dip a tire and I swear to God, I dragged the oil pan
17:55
because it was like so radical how bad the pavement was.
17:58
But there were a lot of that, a lot of roughed up cars that first day.
18:01
No, no catastrophic failures.
18:03
Everything was showing good.
18:05
Day two was a killer day, though.
18:07
I hung out like where was the and started to jump in.
18:09
But where where was the destination day one?
18:13
Like where did you?
18:14
Yep, day one was the dam that they went to the previous time.
18:20
So it's like a little lake there and there's a little dam you can park on.
18:22
So that was kind of the destination.
18:24
The first day is always a little lighter compared to the second day.
18:26
Second day is like you drive like two hours away.
18:29
Day two was my favorite by far.
18:32
It's the one with that mountain pass with the little
18:34
yes, idyllic lake at the top.
18:37
Yeah, it was at the mosquito lake.
18:38
You go like, yeah, I think that's like like Alpine or something
18:41
and then the mosquito lake, absolute way at the end of Highway four.
18:45
We did it backwards this time, though.
18:47
So the speedy section was downhill.
18:50
So I keep in mind the Volvo V 50.
18:53
Again, the car I took T five or will drive.
18:55
This is the first time I pushed the car.
18:57
I have driven it to get tires on it and I've driven it down to
19:02
Santa Cruz. That's it.
19:03
I haven't pushed the car.
19:04
So I'm still day one.
19:05
I was learning the car day to what do I do?
19:08
I run with the fast kids.
19:10
So there was like a runner with.
19:11
Yeah, so Amavir was there with his R 53 Supercharged Mini Cooper,
19:16
which is always always really, really quick.
19:19
His brother had the newest, spiciest Cayman.
19:21
I think there isn't a GT four Cayman.
19:24
It's a or is there today?
19:26
They didn't make it. There's a GT four.
19:28
That's what he had. Is it the yellow one?
19:30
No, we had a silver one.
19:31
But no, that car's yellow Carrera T.
19:33
That's close. Yeah, that car is insane.
19:35
He said he swapped it.
19:36
That he said that Cayman or the Cayman.
19:39
The Boxster, same thing, was four seconds
19:42
like a lap quicker at I think it was Willow Springs.
19:46
I want to say he was quoting.
19:47
He's like, it's so stupid.
19:48
I could put the roof down any time
19:49
and I could smoke anything on a track.
19:51
Wait, I'm sorry. He said Boxster or Cayman?
19:52
Boxster, sorry. OK.
19:54
So then a box. Is it a boxer spider?
19:59
Yeah, because there's a Cayman GT four.
20:00
Not a spark. Yeah, the Cayman GT four.
20:02
This is a Boxster. God damn.
20:04
Yeah, because he had the he had the car.
20:06
It was something special.
20:07
I can't remember. It's a very fast.
20:09
It's got to be the spider.
20:10
It's a GTS or a spider.
20:12
Yeah, dude, stupid, fast.
20:14
Anyway, Corvette Z06.
20:17
What else is in our group?
20:18
An EVO nine M.R. was running with us.
20:21
So it was like the fast group, right?
20:23
So I'm I'm like third place.
20:25
They're set in the pace and we're going down this mountain
20:28
like insanely second, third gear, technical, like hard,
20:32
like late braking, everything like that.
20:34
The car, dude, my and I didn't even talk about
20:36
how I've modified this car on the pod yet.
20:38
Sure. But I did do an elevate rear sway bar
20:42
And I know we kind of mentioned some of the stuff in passing,
20:45
but it's so good, dude.
20:47
It's it's like you believe her.
20:50
It literally shocked me how good, good tires, everything else.
20:54
I was pushing hard.
20:55
Like that's the fast kid group.
20:56
And I was right there the whole time.
20:58
I didn't lag behind and they were like,
20:59
it's so weird to look back and see a $3,500 Volvo
21:03
in your rear view chewing on your bumper.
21:05
So we get to the stop at the bottom there.
21:07
And it's like a good it was like a good 45 minute rip.
21:11
Straight down my brakes just fucking smoke coming off of them.
21:15
They were like, yeah, because it's not a lightweight car.
21:17
I'm on a downhill section like that.
21:18
Yeah, it's not like with a mini, which is like, but the same way.
21:22
The brakes are so and everybody kept commenting.
21:25
They're like, how do your brakes fill your wheels so perfectly?
21:27
Because remember the bigger brakes on the wagon
21:29
on the all wheel drive version?
21:31
There's no like you can't see the end of the rotors.
21:35
It's that those big and they were working, dude.
21:37
They actually and I didn't touch the brakes budget.
21:40
You know, we played by the rules, right?
21:42
So I never touched my I mean, obviously inspected them,
21:46
Imagine if I put like quality pads, rotors and fluid in there
21:50
like I wouldn't need to upgrade them.
21:52
You don't need to upgrade those fucking brakes.
21:54
But dude, everybody was like, you were flogging the shit out of that Volvo.
22:00
They're like, we had no idea what the fuck that thing was doing.
22:03
But the rear end, dude, so predictable with that huge
22:06
the sway bar in the back, just letting waiting to that rear end comes around
22:10
and being able to put in like that's how I would settle the car.
22:12
Like late break it a little bit.
22:14
So in the strut tower bar, really sure it up the turn in,
22:17
which was kind of loose before, dude, it's it's not look.
22:20
It's not a sports car.
22:22
Steering is still a little, a little like ambitiously not sporty.
22:27
And like if you can get it first, but then there's that little
22:30
like mid 2000s kind of lag input lag.
22:33
But, dude, once I got comfortable with the car, it's fast.
22:36
It's a fast fucking car in the canyons and downhill,
22:39
which it's probably should be its weakness. Right. Fuck it. Send it.
22:44
You know, that thing makes two hundred and thirty six pound feet
22:46
of torque at fifteen hundred RPM.
22:49
Every corner exit with all wheel drive and full torque.
22:53
It's different. It's like five cylinder noises.
22:55
Yeah, dude, five cylinder noises.
22:59
The mid supercharged mini Cooper I took the last time was kind of
23:02
the same deal where the supercharger would crawl out of the corners.
23:04
But I'm like before I'm pose like pre apex on the gas a little bit
23:08
because the old wheel drive, it made it so capable.
23:11
Like even if something had like 200 more horsepower,
23:13
just the ability to get on it and then torque being right there.
23:16
But anyway, day two, fucking killer, car is killer.
23:20
Then we're going up the biggest pass where it's like nine thousand
23:22
ninety one hundred square feet. Sure.
23:26
Fucking smoke cloud, like the biggest, like James Bond fucking
23:31
down to lose the bad guy's smoke cloud, right?
23:34
Except a guy following me in his 36 didn't think it was very impressive.
23:40
And then obviously I'm a viewer was in front of me at that point.
23:42
So we all pull over on this like little narrow thing.
23:44
And I didn't want to drive it fast because I knew it was going to.
23:47
I was losing all my coolant.
23:48
It was so much fucking.
23:49
It was so much, dude.
23:50
So we get on the side of the road.
23:52
This sucks because there's a lot of coolant hoses with these engines, right?
23:55
So I'm like, don't be a do not be a turbo feed.
23:58
You know, weird suicide pipe that you have to take the intake off or something.
24:02
Well, so the first thing I do is it looks like it's down low on the on the left side.
24:07
So I'm like, so an empty, empty of coolant, just that little short drive.
24:10
That's how quick it comes out when a coolant systems pressurized and it has
24:13
like a when you're on it going up a mountain at nine thousand feet,
24:17
that coolant comes out quick.
24:18
So we get up like, yeah, I took a wheel off and everything.
24:21
And I'm looking under there.
24:22
I'm like, ah, it's just soaked.
24:23
Everything's dripping.
24:24
So we dumped some water bottles and they're still in the pressure and heat to see
24:28
it coming out of one of the heater core hoses.
24:31
Now, much like the design of your fucking coolant hose sucks.
24:35
This heater core hoses is the stupidest thing.
24:38
Instead of having a hose that runs from like the block to the heater core.
24:41
They have this like stupid thing that clips on to the firewall
24:44
and it has two plastic joints.
24:47
What does plastic do with heat cycles?
24:49
It just becomes fucking crushable brittle.
24:53
So the hose, it just broke off plastic again.
24:55
You know how it comes off like a little like basically a little docking.
24:59
Yeah, kind of bigger though, right?
25:01
Like a like a solid pipe section.
25:03
It just broke clearly, clearly right there.
25:06
And then spraying out under pressure.
25:09
So I muscled all that out of there and we put in a 17 millimeter socket.
25:15
So one of the guys is like the guy with the 36 is like, this is
25:18
if I get a flat, this is the only socket I have for my lug nuts.
25:21
So we might have to like drain some coal in again.
25:24
But we put that in there and then it works just like heavily restricted
25:28
because it pinching through that stupid little.
25:30
Who gives a shit about running?
25:31
No, it doesn't matter.
25:33
So but it fit perfect, dude.
25:35
It's like super tight because that's the thing.
25:37
You put anything small in there.
25:38
It's going to blow around it or push it out.
25:40
So then I'm like, fuck, I looked through my stuff.
25:43
I'm like, I left all my clamps.
25:44
I don't know why I didn't grab clamps.
25:46
So yeah, the hose is pretty tight.
25:48
And then John Jesse always has like random shit.
25:50
So he comes here with like two different types of clamps.
25:53
One's probably from like a 70s Volkswagen.
25:55
The other one's from a fucking, I don't know, a Bentley from the 80s.
25:59
And so we get that back to you.
26:00
It looks like shit.
26:01
It looks like shit.
26:03
Hey, whatever works, it gets up the mountain didn't leak.
26:06
I went to Napa, got a plastic replacement, which wasn't the right size.
26:11
So I built it up with electrical tape on the inside, clamped it down really hard.
26:14
And that held for like two hours of driving the next day until I had to do it again.
26:20
Pain in the dick, dude.
26:22
But anyway, the car was still fine.
26:24
So not no mechanical failure at all.
26:26
It's just the plastic pieces.
26:29
But it was just on the firewall.
26:30
So it was easy to it was easy to get to and easy to work with.
26:33
Yeah, I had to take the inlet for the turbo off the intake pipe,
26:36
which crosses over the engine on the five cylinder.
26:39
So once you do that, you got to remember, though,
26:41
the shittiest fucking thing is on the back of the engine.
26:43
So you're leaning over this turbo five cylinder that's been on fucking.
26:46
You've totally been beating on it all weekend for hours, dude.
26:50
God, they get warm.
26:52
But good, dude, that motor.
26:54
I have so much respect for that motor.
26:57
The way it makes power, the way I'm at one hundred and eighty eight
26:59
thousand miles down this car and a plastic piece gave up.
27:03
It's like, but no transmission, perfect engine, perfect handling, perfect
27:08
comfy. Yeah, dude, that's such a cheater.
27:10
That's such like it's like when I bought it for a speaker.
27:15
Well, I'm going to say, but what I'm saying is like I saw,
27:18
was it Justin had the Super Seven? Yeah, the catering in the rain.
27:22
The first that's what I mean.
27:23
Day one, he's in a catering in your and that listening to that's a life.
27:28
Ipanema or whatever on your stereo, my friend.
27:30
Yeah, but you know, he's not worried about random parts failing
27:34
or like a seat that my airbag might eject from his use of random parts failing.
27:38
It's got a Ford Duratech in it.
27:40
I didn't even I DNF with that same fucking motor in my car.
27:43
He probably set up a motor's fault.
27:45
He had a different coin hose set up in his I heard and probably
27:48
like torqued the bolts down and had an actual
27:52
actually got it working prior than like the week before the route.
27:56
But to be fair, you don't shake down your two thousand hour car
27:59
until you go to the rally.
28:00
There could have been like a head gasket, like fixed kit board in there.
28:04
I could have been who knows, right?
28:06
But no, finished the rally car was cool.
28:09
It looked the part.
28:10
It sounded the part.
28:12
It actually looked cool.
28:12
And some of the photos to see it with like the prancing
28:15
Steve, that's like a prancing moose.
28:17
And it's enough to make it spicy.
28:20
Some do what a great showing of other cars.
28:23
First and foremost, someone was hooning a DeLorean.
28:28
So I followed him at one point.
28:30
Incredibly fast, leaned like the best thing ever, dude, in the corners.
28:35
But we were in the Galant on the original suspension.
28:37
Not that dramatically.
28:39
I don't even think there's that much suspension travel in a DeLorean,
28:42
but true, the X frame.
28:44
Cool. That was super cool to see.
28:49
This guy was his name, Nick, I think, from Mantica.
28:52
So he's not too far out there.
28:53
You go out there, Tika.
28:54
Yeah. So he had the original Ford probe GT turbo.
28:58
Oh, yes, I've met him.
29:05
I think Jason Kamisa did a video about, like, I don't know,
29:10
the current gen dark horse Mustang or some shit.
29:13
And I think that probe was in the video being like,
29:16
this was supposed to replace the Mustang.
29:18
And it's like that Ford probe.
29:20
Yeah, it's like wheels, right?
29:23
He's yeah, it's got Porsche Boxster brakes.
29:25
He printed the intake manifold and the turbo manifold.
29:29
He's redoing everything himself.
29:31
It's so good, dude.
29:33
It's so we were talking for a long time.
29:35
Like, yeah, these are the kind of stupid cars I play with.
29:37
These mods are fucking sick, though.
29:39
So yeah, he had like full Ricardo buckets in there,
29:43
It's like a cool ass car.
29:45
So that was probably my favorite like car that you especially
29:49
when you never see on a rally.
29:50
I'm like, what the Ford probe GT?
29:52
And then he opens the hood.
29:52
I'm like, good Lord.
29:56
Yeah, that's a sick car.
29:58
But dude, so many good cars there.
30:01
Trying to think just, you know, a lot of Porsches,
30:04
of course, a lot of E 30s.
30:06
Arts E 30 had some issues the first day.
30:09
So they got that straight.
30:11
Nothing's pretty cool, man.
30:12
It's just a it's a good idea.
30:14
Yeah, I I'm in support of it.
30:20
He tipped me off about the interior.
30:21
I talked to him the day before the rally
30:25
because he saw me like posting about my woes
30:28
and just making sure I wasn't kind of like ended
30:31
and at all by the fork in a light socket or something
30:34
because I couldn't rally.
30:36
And yeah, because he got the shit.
30:39
I want to say tech art.
30:40
That's not the right term.
30:41
Whatever the fancy interior he put in it was.
30:44
Oh, the M. What is it?
30:46
M. Technic. M. Technic.
30:47
Yeah, it looked really dope.
30:50
And it was going to be like,
30:51
this is a surprise for the rally.
30:52
Like people won't know it's coming.
30:54
So good. I think it's cool.
30:55
I'm full support of it.
30:58
It's a swap and it's like an ambitious swap.
31:00
So it's perpetually going to have some teething
31:05
The motor is always going to be strong.
31:06
The transmission is going to hold up.
31:07
It's just like all the ancillary shit.
31:11
But it sounds like it got resolved and and and unlike me
31:14
with my stock car, I know he didn't.
31:18
So so many good cars.
31:19
The wagon also served as an awesome
31:22
like dinner taxi for everybody.
31:25
Throw people in the wagon, right?
31:28
It was a killer time, man.
31:29
Like I that's second day.
31:31
Those are some of my favorite roads, man.
31:33
And I know you remember just absolutely scenic,
31:36
but just like the pavements really good.
31:39
It's not choppy because it's like kind of touristy up there.
31:42
So the the pavement is fucking awesome.
31:45
But I mean, last time we were up there, it was quiet.
31:47
Like there were people around and it wasn't.
31:50
It wasn't like tons of bikes and tons of this and that.
31:54
And it's like a whole part of the country that like it's
31:57
touristy, but like people.
31:58
It's pretty unknown.
32:00
Yeah, it's an adventure to get up there
32:01
because that's like two hours from Sonor.
32:03
So it's a hike to get there.
32:05
And then, of course, I break down at the peak
32:07
two hours away from home base, right?
32:09
So well, it's all downhill.
32:11
Just roll from there.
32:12
That I literally was like 100 feet from cresting.
32:15
So at the most amount of stress right there.
32:19
But no, it's that section out of any rally.
32:22
I think that's my probably favorite stretch of road.
32:26
It was so good, dude.
32:27
Dude, we caught air three times, like full air.
32:32
I didn't know if he 50s could fly,
32:34
but they come down to earth pretty fast.
32:36
I'll tell you that much.
32:36
But no, all of us, I mean, watching the cars hop,
32:39
like literally four tire hop.
32:40
And then there was one sketch one
32:43
where I caught too much air mid corner.
32:44
And it was like, oh boy, I did the touch pavement
32:47
before this corner stops.
32:49
Jesus, take the week.
32:51
I was going I was going 11 tenths at one point.
32:55
I'm not going to lie.
32:56
Yeah, you had to push a wagon a little harder.
32:58
But no, well, you feel you feel safe in a Volvo, right?
33:00
I didn't feel safe at all.
33:02
You can, you know, it's got side airbags
33:04
and stuff like that, you know?
33:07
I think it does probe or something.
33:09
They probably all been stripped out right after it was wrecked
33:11
like four times or all the all the wiring hacked out of it
33:14
and put back together.
33:15
It's like, no, it's good.
33:17
The pretensioner and like the rear seat
33:19
goes off instead of yours.
33:22
Yeah, it's all wired backwards.
33:23
No, that car is good.
33:24
And it came out looking pretty good to us.
33:26
I could nurse some of it back to to decent shape.
33:29
But yeah, well, I'm sad I didn't get to go.
33:32
I'm sad the car didn't get to go.
33:34
I wanted to, you know, so I didn't I did the Natty Daddy want
33:39
and then and then I bought hard Mountain Dew last time.
33:44
So I don't know what like dog shit quality,
33:47
like most terribly processed, awful alcohol beverages
33:52
to bring for next time.
33:53
I would have done it this time, but like, I don't I don't know.
33:56
Like, like whatever Smirnoff ice is now like something bad.
34:03
No, it was a great time, man.
34:05
Like it's I think I like, like I said, that day two is everything, man.
34:09
I think everything else is awesome.
34:10
But that day, that day two is just like this culmination.
34:14
You go hard on day two, right?
34:16
Day, day Friday, that Friday is always like getting the mood,
34:19
you know, start to work it out.
34:20
Good parking lot hang and then Saturday is all business.
34:23
It's the longest day and then Sunday is a half day, right?
34:25
So yeah, car made at home.
34:28
I've been driving it.
34:28
It's it's right, dude.
34:30
It's honestly like it's a car I kind of want to keep.
34:35
I'm not I'm not even trying to be funny.
34:36
Well, that's what we're going to say.
34:37
Like that's going to be my next plan.
34:38
Like, are you going to hang on to it a little bit?
34:40
Are you going to do more?
34:42
Are you going to turn it and burn it?
34:44
Like, what are you going to get rid of something else
34:46
to justify keeping it?
34:47
Like, what's your plan right now?
34:50
I have too much to get rid of.
34:51
I do need to shoot a review of it.
34:54
We'll probably we'll probably sell it is the plan.
34:57
I took it to work and I took a bunch of the leadership team
35:00
want me to to lunch and I'm like, we're going in my fucking
35:02
shipbox wagon and everybody's like, dude, this thing's really fucking good.
35:05
And we were just ripping these back road corners.
35:11
And then when you don't drive like an idiot, which is hard to do
35:13
with the exhaust open, it's so good to you.
35:18
It's so spacious like adults sit in the back.
35:20
The fucking cargo space is huge.
35:22
It's all wheel drive.
35:24
It's like the list of pros for this con and everything's easy to fix.
35:28
These this period of Volvo, it's it's so easy to work on.
35:32
But anyway, my fix for that coin thing when I got it back is I just got
35:35
copper like hose joints, like piping joints.
35:38
I just cut three inch sections, hose clamps, tight fit.
35:43
It'll last forever.
35:45
Yeah, like that should have been they shouldn't achieve plastic.
35:48
It's you shouldn't have plastic in your cooling system at all.
35:50
Looking at you, BMW.
35:52
Oh my god, dude, the entire cooling systems plastic.
35:55
Yeah, they would have put a plastic water pump in there
35:57
if they could have plastic heat exchanger.
35:59
Yeah, that little copper like section with hose clamps.
36:04
Invincible now. Yeah.
36:06
Oh, in the other way, there's there's obviously a feed line and a return line.
36:09
When I went to just pull the hose off the fucking return line,
36:12
the one under it for the heater core, the fucking thing shattered.
36:16
I have to hose came off and just what like pieces everywhere.
36:19
I'm like, oh, so you know, God damn.
36:23
Fantastic killer, killer.
36:24
What what what like what car one like the popular vote?
36:30
Was it the DeLorean DeLorean?
36:32
Yeah, just by nature.
36:34
Just by nature of was it a five speed or an auto manual?
36:37
And he had like a cam and some mods.
36:40
Oh, so it actually fucking motored.
36:42
Yeah, dude, it was like sick.
36:44
But yeah, I like suspension a little more tightening up there.
36:48
But just to see some of those cars flex.
36:51
It's such a dog shit.
36:52
Fucking wild, though, dude, it's just
36:54
but to see it DeLorean being properly hooned.
36:56
Love it. Yeah, never seen that before.
36:59
Yeah, I think it'll be either him or or or hustling a catering in the rain.
37:03
I feel like you get you get points there.
37:06
So the worst thing is that thing was like filling up like a bathtub
37:09
during the driver's meeting like the safety meeting like drilling holes in it
37:12
to like drain apparently they don't have any floor drains,
37:15
which is a wild design.
37:17
Well, I mean, I get it in a car that like you drive in the rain.
37:21
You don't. That's not a car.
37:22
Anyone it drives in the rain.
37:25
Frank, it rains like 80 percent of the time there.
37:28
Right. And that's why I argue it.
37:30
That's why they don't they don't plan for anything.
37:32
A British car is not built ever with any sort of practicality in mind,
37:35
even when it's meant to be practical.
37:37
It's like a bus or it they they are barely built.
37:40
They're kind of just slapped together in a shed, of course.
37:45
Roy, then that's that's it, man.
37:47
Good rally, successful rally survived.
37:50
The funniest thing is, man, I've ever posted that picture
37:53
when I had my I don't know if you saw it on on Instagram,
37:56
but I have the passenger tire off and I have my head in the wheel.
37:59
Well, cars clearly on the side of the road on a jack
38:04
tire off and I'm looking around under there and he wrote official
38:07
winner of the APA podcast.
38:09
Twenty. Yes, I did see that.
38:11
It's like, fuck my proudest moment.
38:14
Yes. But yeah, no, it still went.
38:16
It still drove and I finished the things.
38:18
I think officially at that point, I won once I once I got her home.
38:22
Yeah. Yeah. Well, you did.
38:24
I spent another $13 on a plastic section and clamp.
38:28
So my budget went down to three dollars and 80 cents. Nice.
38:34
No, I didn't buy the copper till I got home.
38:36
So that was after fair.
38:37
Now our budgets, we can go crazy with our budgets.
38:40
You know, we can actually man oil changes
38:42
and the things you put off in the name of saving a penny.
38:45
I can actually swap out now the upper hose
38:47
and this thermostat housing.
38:49
There's really I can cure whatever this weird mystery wobble
38:53
in the rear suspension is that'd be good.
38:55
That'd be a good thing to tackle.
38:57
Make it safe. Well, cool.
38:59
Yeah. And I think, you know, just to kind of cap
39:03
the budget rally car talk,
39:09
which first off, we're going to have to do some other sort of challenge
39:11
for something like this for the next rally,
39:13
which is the first weekend of May, I believe.
39:17
Jesus, I don't know if I have the van with the whip of car to get on.
39:21
Like, what can our Jesus?
39:23
Should it be like you have to buy something and not fucking touch it?
39:28
It shouldn't be should we lower the budget?
39:33
It's a classic rally, so it should only be like pre-1980 or like,
39:38
I don't know, like we'll have to make up some other or we don't
39:42
or we just do some other thing, like, hey, let's buy some off-roader
39:44
things and go off-roading or.
39:46
I don't know what I've decided, I think.
39:50
I think what I want to do with the I almost called it an escort
39:57
Nothing wrong with that.
39:58
Yeah, and I'm used to picking up escort mail.
40:03
But what I decided to do with my my budget escort
40:07
is I think I would like to do like an HBDE with it.
40:14
Do a track day with it.
40:15
Dude, once it's sorted, you got to definitely sort it
40:18
because that's a lot of money to just watch the coolant on the track
40:22
and ruin everybody's day.
40:23
Like, like, yeah, exactly.
40:25
Like make it so it's not going to ruin everyone's day.
40:29
Sort out the rear suspension, wiggle, finish up the cooling system.
40:34
And then that way I can at least like enjoy the sticky tires
40:36
I put on it and like some of the fruits of my labor.
40:40
And then I can and I think because I've never done
40:43
I've never done an HBDE.
40:44
So I'd like to do it.
40:48
You can't see it's behind me somewhere.
40:52
And yeah, I'd like to do that.
40:53
And then and then I then I have a baseline to figure out, like,
40:56
do I want something like this?
40:58
Do I want something more aggressive?
40:59
Do we want something dumber?
41:01
Do I feel comfortable taking something like the S 2000
41:04
on on a on a track day, right?
41:06
And maybe do Sonoma or Laguna.
41:08
So and then at that point, sell it.
41:12
So I think that's I think that's my my train of thought.
41:14
I know there's a couple, both Sonoma and Laguna
41:19
in November, I think, which is nice far, assuming weather holds out.
41:23
I don't want my I don't think I want my first day to be a wet a wet day.
41:28
Hot hatch in the wet.
41:28
That might be fun. Yeah.
41:30
So and then and then move it on, you know, and see if I can at least break even.
41:35
Oh, yeah, I need to review that thing.
41:37
I think it's been a while since I've driven it.
41:39
I need to give me the keys to the V 50.
41:41
Yeah, we need to drive the canyons.
41:43
You know, maybe that's what we should do.
41:44
We should like make content and and and toss the keys to one another.
41:54
You like I can say like I'm Thomas.
42:01
But it would be you're doing a throttle house.
42:02
That was yeah, yeah, we'd have to do we'd have to do something similar.
42:06
Yeah. So yeah, yeah, that was a that was not a good change.
42:09
That was nor was it a good Thomas.
42:12
You would have to do it.
42:13
You were more of a regular Canadian, dude, right?
42:16
He's trying right then.
42:18
I'm James like, like wildly cocky need.
42:23
And it's like like hammer drunk.
42:28
Hot soccer, hooligan.
42:30
Toss me the fucking case.
42:31
You see that focus?
42:33
You fucking melt like totally, totally out to lunch.
42:38
So we should we should continue this awful impression
42:41
and just and just do that.
42:44
That'll that'll be good.
42:46
And then maybe we'll get picked up for a top gear replacement or whatever.
42:53
That was good rally, man.
42:54
But yeah, should we do a quiz?
42:57
Wait, are you quizzing me this time?
42:58
I'm quizzing you fuck this time.
43:01
Don't forget the last time I pitched you a soft ball.
43:05
So yeah, I think I think you're going to be my I think I am.
43:09
I have I had to I had like.
43:11
Unrealistically hard to the point where they say in the other one,
43:15
they say the model year in it.
43:17
And I was just going to let it roll because I was because
43:20
that was like the only actionable hint.
43:22
This other one is not that one.
43:24
This is a different one.
43:25
I think it's easier.
43:26
You tell the people what we're doing and I'm going to pull it up.
43:29
Hey, everyone, welcome back to our automotive print ad quiz game show.
43:33
This is a this is a fun little game where we read a magazine advertisement
43:37
from the 80s, 90s to mid 2000s featuring an automobile.
43:42
I don't think I had to say that spot, but we did.
43:44
So Frank's going to read the ad.
43:45
He's going to omit anything that clearly gives the vehicle away.
43:49
I have three guesses to figure out what the hell is Yammer and on about.
43:52
Usually it's a vehicle that I've usually used a vehicle.
43:55
And well, sometimes.
43:57
And then sometimes it's in this market.
43:59
I think we've had that happen a couple of times or it's like kilometers.
44:02
No, no, no, we're going to send it or that was.
44:05
What was in rupees that one time?
44:06
But anyway, I was in dinners at Gold the Bloons.
44:11
But anyway, get through the ad.
44:13
I got three guesses, 10 minutes on the clock.
44:15
Every time I fail, I can ask for a hint.
44:17
Yell at your your TV screens, yell at your wind screens, yell at your
44:20
whatever screens, your kids.
44:21
It's a funny take it out.
44:22
Yeah, he said, definitely catch yourself a domestic.
44:28
It always is. Let's fucking go.
44:31
Roll that beautiful bean footage.
44:33
OK, so this one is a.
44:35
It's a two pager and here it's one of the ones where like I'm looking at it digitally.
44:40
So when I click on it to be able to actually read it, it's deep, deeply pixely.
44:44
So if I if there's a little stumbleage here, just roll with the punches.
44:47
Yeah, it is a two pager on the left hand side.
44:52
You see, gosh, a slightly more country
44:57
Bert Reynolds analog.
44:59
OK, and he's sitting in the bed
45:03
of a pickup truck with one leg hanging out of it.
45:07
And he's just he's got like a smirk and under it.
45:11
It says one heck of a hunk of a truck now at your blank dealer.
45:18
And then on the right side, it has now on the bottom half of it,
45:22
it's got our same hunk hanging out of the passenger or sorry,
45:26
the driver's window with one hand on the wheel of the one like maximum
45:30
elbow out, and he's like looking at the camera.
45:33
And then it says some some words, a pitch and some tech specs.
45:37
And so this is what we've got.
45:38
Let me zoom into the pixels here.
45:40
One heck of a hunk of a four by four on demand four wheel drive shift from
45:46
two wheel drive to four wheel drive high at the flick of a stick
45:51
without stopping to lock the front hubs.
45:55
Not in Toyota highest minimum ground clearance
45:59
of any compact higher than Toyota Chevy S 10 Ford Ranger.
46:05
New wide clearance, torsion bar independent front suspension
46:10
for a smooth level ride unlike any other compact truck before.
46:16
Tightest turning circle for maneuvering in tight spots runs rings inside
46:22
Chevy S 10 Ford Ranger Toyota.
46:25
Friend stabilizer bar wide rear track for a solid stance,
46:31
That was what Senator Craig, I think it was in the bathroom saw at the airport.
46:36
Wide radial tires, standard to 1575 are 15
46:43
everything you could want in a compact truck,
46:46
automatic transmission with lock up torque converter for extra efficiency.
46:49
Don't want to power steering with tilt column for extra five room.
46:55
Sunroof standard on ST and optional on XE.
47:00
Step bumper and lots more available options.
47:05
It then has specs like wheelbase and overall length
47:10
and payload, which apparently is I think it's as fourteen hundred pounds.
47:13
This is where the pixels get really, really sketchy.
47:17
What else do we have?
47:19
One heck of a saver.
47:21
Only five thousand nine hundred ninety five dollars for the blank MPG standard.
47:26
So the basic bitch model, big value, little money.
47:29
Economy is a dirt is a tradition at blank and has been for 50 years.
47:34
That heritage continues this year with quality, advanced technology
47:38
and standard equipment like radial tires on most models for reduced rolling friction.
47:44
Every blank trunk truck gives you a solid value for your money
47:48
with extra features at no extra cost.
47:50
Prices start at just five thousand nine hundred ninety five dollars.
47:53
That's less in Toyota, Ford or Chevy.
47:54
Yes, cheap. But look what you get.
47:56
Five speed overdrive transmission, power front ventilated disc brakes,
48:01
transistorized ignition for strong starts and maintenance,
48:06
maintenance free battery, brake load sensing valve.
48:10
I'm assuming that's a prop valve.
48:12
Whatever sounds maybe blow through ventilation with a side window defoggers
48:18
by limometer blank is one heck of a hunk of a truck.
48:22
Now it's your blank dealer.
48:27
That's what we got, my friend.
48:31
It's a heck of a hunk of a truck is what it is.
48:33
So it's a it sounds like a miniscule truck to me.
48:37
Minimum maximum ground clearance or whatever the fucking statement was.
48:41
They can drive circles inside of S 10 Ranger and Toyota.
48:45
Also, some of their vehicles didn't have radial tires.
48:47
So I'm assuming some of the phrasing in this
48:50
like puts me in, I'm thinking real early 80s land.
48:54
So you mean, you mean the description of the guy who looks
48:57
shockingly like Bert Reynolds alone wasn't a hint that could swig
49:01
a lot of directions, my friend.
49:03
It's coming back. And how?
49:05
But speaking about catching a domestic was OK.
49:10
There's this period rules were different.
49:13
Right. Let's be honest.
49:14
So the biggest hint I had was Toyota is out, Ford is out.
49:20
I think it mentioned GM is out.
49:21
So Chevy S 10 specifically.
49:24
So yeah, so I'm thinking small trucks already off the rip.
49:27
Then it names like the three go to small trucks.
49:34
Probably not, because at that time they shared with GM.
49:37
So what if the Suzu Joe is the hunk?
49:40
You could you could say that.
49:44
So it's like that it went to that.
49:46
And I thought like Mitsubishi Dodge, because it didn't mention Dodge.
49:49
But this is before I think this is before the D 50.
49:52
So we're if we're in the early 80s anyway, so that rules that out.
49:56
So I'm down to the the other one is Nissan.
50:01
So it's either Nissan or Suzu.
50:06
I don't think did a Suzu have the pop at this point?
50:11
I don't know if it was still called the pop, though,
50:13
because that was the shared with the love, which was replaced by the S 10.
50:17
So they might have had the they weren't Andre yet.
50:21
You're definitely missing at least one player.
50:27
That's not shared with any of those.
50:29
It could be Volkswagen, too.
50:32
Volkswagen did have a little pickup truck.
50:33
It's not what I was getting at.
50:34
But I named another one.
50:36
You did name a different one.
50:40
It sounds Japanese the way the ads written.
50:44
I don't think it's the Volkswagen truck in this ad at all.
50:48
I don't think it would be the hunk of a truck.
50:51
I don't think that comes across as completely German.
50:53
I mean, maybe, I don't know.
50:59
I think it's I'm not sure on the Suzu front right now.
51:03
Now I'm starting to doubt that.
51:04
I was starting to lean that way.
51:05
You're still you're still missing a player.
51:06
And I'm not saying this player is.
51:09
Who my ad is, but like I just assumed GM, because they said Chevy S 10.
51:21
I guess then it's Ford.
51:23
Did they not say Ford in the ad?
51:25
No, they did. They said Ford Ranger.
51:26
OK, yeah, it was Ford Ranger.
51:27
I guess 10 Toyota were the ones that they they bitch slapped to the ground.
51:33
Again, back to the theme, apparently, of this one, which is DV, right?
51:39
How could I be missing something else?
51:46
I've missed many of these many times.
51:47
A big player. There's a big player dog.
51:49
How am I missing this?
51:50
Big player dog, trucks.
51:53
I'm not even saying. Oh, Mazda.
51:55
Yeah, well, that's Ford Ranger.
51:57
So I assume if they named the like not.
51:59
And not if you're talking.
52:02
We're not to be 2,200, 2,300 land yet.
52:04
Yeah, be 1,800. Yeah.
52:08
Be those Mazda pickups are kind of cool.
52:09
They're sick. Yeah, yeah.
52:10
I like the bees, too, because I'm like, I do like the early Rangers,
52:13
which is bees on it.
52:17
Check under your seats.
52:17
Everyone gets bees.
52:22
I think it's Japanese.
52:23
I think that leaves me with process of a limit.
52:26
This is the second week in a row that I or the second quiz in a row
52:29
where I had these process elimination, I think,
52:31
where you named a bunch of automakers.
52:35
Nissan. So this wouldn't have been hard body.
52:41
Because it's bigger.
52:42
What was their little little guy called?
52:47
It was something dumb.
52:48
It was like what you would call it.
52:54
I mean, it was just called the.
52:56
Yeah, many people call them the pickup.
52:59
Yeah, but Nissan had an equal even in this ad.
53:02
They just said Toyota.
53:04
Yeah, it was like Ford Ranger Chevy S10 and Toyota.
53:09
What the fuck was it called?
53:15
It's like something like it not adventure truck or.
53:23
Is it sport Nissan sport?
53:26
It was something that like reminded me of like a kid's nickname
53:29
is like good job sport.
53:31
You know, it was the squirt.
53:36
I don't know. Let's try it.
53:37
Nineteen eighty two Nissan sport.
53:47
This is the nineteen eighty three.
53:54
One heck of a hunk of a truck now at your Datsun dealer.
53:59
Oh, Datsun, we are driven Nissan.
54:02
So it's it's it is right during that period across.
54:05
Because 1983, right?
54:07
Because eighty eighty one eighty two eighty three was like the crossover.
54:11
Eighty two eighty three was hard where it would be like Nissan by Datsun.
54:15
And they got rid of the Datsun number.
54:17
Naming convention at that time.
54:19
And it was just and I'm going to send you a link to the ad.
54:21
It was just the truck.
54:25
Oh, but they did have the the sport truck.
54:29
That's sort of thinking the little guy stood for sport truck.
54:33
OK, click on this ad.
54:35
Sorry, click on the link I sent you.
54:38
So there's one where like the guy sitting next to the two-wheel drive
54:40
truck and then you click the next ad.
54:43
And it's you see you see you see the one heck of a hunk of a truck.
54:47
The guys with his leg hanging over the.
54:51
So but like, I guess in in.
54:55
And so it says Nissan huge against on the back tailgate and then Datsun in the corner.
55:00
Two point four liter.
55:04
Yeah, but if you click on if you click on like the second picture.
55:11
That's the ad I was reading where it's the four-wheel drive with the white wheels.
55:14
Oh, that's four by four on the door, like really dope graphics.
55:18
But isn't that the sports one?
55:19
Because they had like the sports bar and also that one was a it looked identical,
55:25
except I think they were all black and it said ST on the side of four by four.
55:29
And I think you've got like maybe KC lights on the top or something like that.
55:33
Dude, that thing's killer.
55:34
But it was the it was the Datsun 720.
55:39
And then it became the I think in 80.
55:41
I think 85 was the last year than 86.
55:44
It turned into the hard body.
55:46
OK, with that old nap.
55:48
You know, I was picturing I was picturing a black one, too.
55:51
I should ask you the color.
55:55
You would have got it in like 0.5 guesses.
55:58
Yeah, just Nissan truck, huh?
56:00
That's interesting.
56:02
The new killer looking.
56:04
I've always really wanted one of these trucks.
56:08
And it's just kind of never came to fruition.
56:10
I had a friend who had a two-wheel drive super basic one.
56:14
Yeah, just white with a blue vinyl interior.
56:17
And I tried to teach me how to learn how to drive a stick on it.
56:23
But those are like the perfect vehicles,
56:26
because first gear is always super, super short.
56:28
Yep. And just it's carbureted.
56:31
And it's just like.
56:32
Dude, I love I love the hard bodies, but you can't get a bench sheet in them.
56:36
They had two bucket seats.
56:37
That's like could could get the hard bodies in a two-wheel drive.
56:41
Yeah. No, all of them, even the four by fours.
56:44
So I felt like the basic bitch models you can get one.
56:48
I don't think they ever did.
56:49
Everyone I've ever seen for sale anyway.
56:51
And that's what kind of kept me away, even though they're cool as shit.
56:53
I love how the hard bodies look, dude.
56:56
Yeah, these are cool, too.
56:57
Yeah, these are really cool.
57:01
Rad, well, congratulations, sir.
57:03
Process of elimination again.
57:06
And I mean, I've done nothing.
57:11
I I got the part, as I mentioned, for the
57:15
and this is in the world of PCP.
57:17
Yeah, because we kind of already we already did our project.
57:19
Yeah, like I had the sorts.
57:22
I'm definitely out of sorts.
57:23
Do you have any do you have anything you want to throw into the hopper here
57:27
before we close out?
57:28
We literally skipped over everything I did to that Volvo.
57:30
But you know what? It's done.
57:33
I just I guess high level.
57:34
I did basic maintenance, you know, like the, you know, spark plugs.
57:39
All five engine, air filter, oil change.
57:42
I did like stupid stuff like that, right?
57:44
Like, yeah, I replaced it.
57:47
I did talk about, though, remember that brake booster system?
57:49
That was a big thing to replace.
57:51
And then I did do a little bit trying to bring the paint back,
57:53
which came back pretty good.
57:55
Yeah, I was pretty happy with that.
57:56
Yeah. So it was just that kind of stuff, you know,
57:59
sway bars and strut tower bar with a big installs for handling.
58:02
And I'll tell you what, man, I'm cool after doing the rally.
58:07
I think I made the right choice by skipping some maintenance items
58:09
and putting in performance mods because I think the value
58:12
that made to make the car interesting and fun
58:15
outweighed like the potential risk it would have brought, you know,
58:20
not doing the maintenance.
58:21
Yeah, I guess it's a balance.
58:23
Yeah, I guess it's an easy call to make once you've returned
58:26
and shit didn't explode. Right.
58:28
Right. Like if you were like, you know, whatever,
58:30
the timing belt's fine and it's like ate itself like day two.
58:34
Yeah, I would have done. Yeah. Time belt for sure.
58:36
Like I skipped like stupid stuff like trans fluid and stuff,
58:38
which I'll do later.
58:40
But yeah, dude, just that first like time pushing it that second day,
58:44
I was like, yep, worth every handling mods, worth every fucking dude.
58:47
And I dumped maybe what?
58:51
Three hundred and something dollars in handling mods
58:53
and it transformed the car.
58:54
So every penny worth it.
58:56
Well, tire tires are sort of a handling mod.
59:01
They already had the Eibach lowering springs,
59:02
which drastically changed that car.
59:04
Yeah. Plus the plus the sick exhaust cut out.
59:07
Oh, it's was that a party favorite?
59:09
Did you roll that thing?
59:10
Did you roll into the driver's meeting?
59:12
It was way too loud.
59:13
I barely because it has like an aftermarket muffler.
59:16
So it already has a kind of cool tone to it.
59:18
I would just if I was going to keep it,
59:20
I'd probably take it off for weight reduction,
59:21
just remove that section and put a straight pipe in.
59:23
But yeah, it's kind of fun.
59:25
And five cylinder wide over kind of silly.
59:27
Yeah, it's good. Hell yeah.
59:30
All right. Well, let's let's let's let's close it down.
59:37
And thank you all for putting up with us yet again.
59:40
We are like we're going to blink and we're going to be at 200 episodes here.
59:44
So if you've listened to all 200, I'm deeply apologetic
59:49
and you should strongly consider re-evaluating most things about your life.
59:54
And we'll see you for the next 200.
59:56
So keep listening to however and wherever you're listening.
59:59
Spread the word and your cheeks.
00:02
Spread the word and your cheeks and spread other people.
00:07
No, just tell people about the pod and then keep coming back for more.
00:12
So thank you for doing that.
00:15
Yeah, keep sending us suggestions and nudes.
00:20
And you can do that through our Instagram, which is just a APA pod there.
00:28
I take pictures of cars.
00:29
I do that via the photographer's garage on the things.
00:34
How about you, sir? Where can people stalk you digitally?
00:36
Yeah, I rescue, restore and review projects.
00:40
I never finish at the auto obscure garage on YouTube.
00:44
I'm just collecting a nearly finished projects at this point.
00:47
So that's pretty fun. Yeah.
00:48
And then we should we should figure out what sort of like party
00:51
or do we sacrifice a goat or like, what do we do for our 200th episode?
00:55
All of that, for sure.
00:56
Do we do we get in like a do we get like a mystery
00:59
some sort of mystery guest on?
01:01
Do we do like an eight hour marathon episode where
01:06
we try intravenous drugs for the first time?
01:10
I don't know if you have suggestions, let us know.
01:13
Yeah. And and I lied.
01:14
It would not be for the first time.
01:18
And until then, I guess a few just in.
01:22
Yeah, take care, guys.
01:23
We'll catch you on the next one.
