Episode 373 - Donny Schatz Loses His Ride and Things Get Spicy at the Topless 100

That's the only reason he came over was just to see my ugly face.

The way he's back in studio, I did get a comment, a friend of mine that listened said the audio

was much better with the phone call last time.

Because you weren't in your car doing it through your freaking central phone deal, you're

just at home hanging out.

So we'll note that, from now on you're only allowed to talk on the phone, you're

allowed to talk to the rest of your car.

Hope everyone's doing well, it's been a sluggish weekend for me and I know Dwayne was out traveling,

got a little racing in, got to visit his 200th track in the great, as I said, great

state up north, but it's really not a state, it's a country up there, we'll talk more

about that here in a sec.

Well, up to some racing.

And I guess we didn't really get a lot of racing in ourselves.

I didn't at all.

I felt like shit all weekend.

I don't know why.

I probably just remembered Dwayne was coming over Monday.

So I probably probably had the Browns on TV.

Yeah.

No.

I know better.

But Dwayne actually was on kind of a little vacation, but ended up getting to his 200th

race track up in Canadian.

But it was not a dirt track.

It was not.

It was a layered international race.

Dwayne, Sue St. Marie, I guess is war, you call it.

I think that's what the actual address was, but it's like 20 minutes from the locks after

you pass the bridge up.

But yeah, I mean, four, there's over 4,000 people there.

They did this Thursday night Thunder deal as the last week of that was fifth week.

And the week before I did some looking, they had like 3,000 so I'm like, yeah,

we better, you know, only get there super early, but we ended up getting there

pretty early.

Yeah.

It started off a little rough, you know, gates didn't open until half hour late.

And racing was like, huh, man, I don't know, because it had a few incidents in qualifying

slash hot laps.

And there's no safety truck in the infield.

We got to bring it out of the pits every time.

And I don't know if guys are eating hot dogs or what, but it takes about five

minutes each time to get out there.

But no, they once show guys go on, it started right on time and they had five

divisions, six, if you count the lawnmower, 20 lap lawnmower race in between

heats and the lawnmowers, yeah, on the dirt track.

And, uh, but, uh, yeah, first, uh, lawnmower, a main was on the dirt track, like

at eight 19 and the super late model, all super late model race was on the track

like at eight 29.

So, uh, we stayed for, uh, five of the six divisions and left at 10 o'clock and, uh,

good racing.

It was good racing.

I can see they, they keep it going.

Uh, and the thing is, if they would run, uh, efficient safety crew, they could

have been, we could have been out of there by nine probably with everything.

But hey, he can't complain too much.

So that's my only downfall of the place is the safety crew.

I don't know why they don't have a safety crew in the infield.

You got to, even like a car stall, you got to bring the safety truck out of

pits and it'd be five minutes or the wrecker.

And, uh, the other thing that, uh, um, there was no, that means there was no

fire crew in the infield.

I seen a couple of fire sensors and I seen guys without driver gloves.

So that wasn't recommended.

That, that was my thing.

But no, other than that, that ran on the racing was good.

Same guy, uh, Dustin Jackson, one of the super late models and the modified, um, and

EPA, I mean, it was really, really good racing.

I mean, they came down to the last couple laps and those, the compacts, of

course, like anywhere is wild and crazy and fun.

Yeah.

Um, street stocks love the street stocks.

Their street stocks were look like street stocks.

I mean, even so they had a lot of old ones.

There's some sixties mustangs, uh, um, and stuff.

I mean, there was, uh, some old cars, but then there were the newer cars still look

like a street stock.

Um, the points leader is a girl that's like in a 64 mustang.

Very cool.

Well, the picture I put on Facebook, I didn't realize at the time that was

the points leader and it was her second, it's their second year of racing, um,

and such there, but, uh, yeah, they put on a good show.

It was pretty cool seeing some street stocks that look like they should be street

stocks.

Yeah.

And, uh, compacts were good, uh, but yeah, it was, it was a good night.

It was cool.

Glad we went.

Um, humongous grandstand announcer does a great job.

Um, very, very good announcer.

I will say that he, he, um, and he must travel because he's talking

about, uh, racing down in Michigan and stuff.

He was talking about, uh, that, um, they have a huge race coming

up this weekend, two day show Friday and Saturday and the Saturday is

paying the outlaw super late when I was 10,000 to win.

So supposedly some Americans are coming over.

Um, but yeah, it was, like I said, a Thursday night show and they've been

getting three to 4,000 people on a Thursday night show and it's 25

buck Canadian.

Um, and it was, I think that equaled 16, 16 or 17 American.

So, uh, yeah, it was, it was good.

First I was kind of like, yeah, it's got a few Oak shade vibes.

I mean, it's got a, uh, enclosed trailer for the concession stands.

It's got, uh, you know, like an old box of box truck for the souvenir

stand.

Um, the restroom is kind of a trailer with, uh, you know, kind

of a big hole before the entrance of the men's and your, uh, you

know, opening the gate was a little cumbersome.

It sounded like.

Yeah.

It opened a little over half hour late and there's two cops sitting

there with bulletproof vests and they look like there's 12, but I

don't know if there's a brother or sister or what, but they look

like there's about 12 of them.

Melissa's like, do you, how many racetracks have you seen cops

with bulletproof vests?

They hit the gate.

I said, I don't know if that's good or bad.

Say, man, Canada must be lit.

Yeah.

It's like, like, are they wearing bulletproof vests?

Just cause or, uh, I told her, I said, yeah, and you made

me get my weapons on the car to cross the border.

Yeah.

Come on.

We're to fit right in.

But no, it was pretty good.

I mean, it was a good night of racing.

It was enjoyable.

Uh, like I said, good racing, uh, um, even lost the car out

in the weeds around.

So around the, down the back stretch, well, there is a

little fence down the back stretch in a few spots, but one

and two, there's nothing and it just goes off into like

the world's tallest weed pile than down a hill somewhere

because we lost one car down there and had to fish him out.

Yeah.

But, uh, yeah, it was, uh, I tell you, it was pretty

competitive racing.

Oh, every, every class, I think it was maybe the street

stock.

Um, the leader got out to maybe a second or two lead

and other not.

There's all right.

There.

Yeah.

The modified one, the guy cut on the inside.

And I mean, they was less than a half car length

at start finish line and their heat races was that

way too.

I mean, the heat races were excellent.

Yeah.

So, yeah, it was pretty cool.

I mean, as a track, it's only been open since 1999.

Now you're like, oh, this hasn't been open a lot.

And they said each year they said it's the best

year they've had.

So it sounds like each year they're putting more

and more into it.

I mean, the lights, uh, they put some like high

LED lights, like you buy it, uh, on Amazon or something, on

the poles on top of the arms, cause there's some dark

spots, but you see they're trying to improve spots

or things.

I mean, but yeah, the same owners had it and they

keep saying that he was doing more and more things

and, uh, we're gonna have the biggest pay race ever

up there.

Like I said, this weekend for 10,000 to win.

I think this is $34,000 a main purse or the

all, all late models and, uh, so yeah, it's actually

sounds like it started off small and it just keeps

growing and growing.

So, but dude, if you can get 4,000 people there at 25

Canadian for a regular show, I don't know what these

regular shows pay, but there's like 10 modified, 10

super late models, 20 compacts, uh, 14, or so I think

it's 17 street stocks.

You know, I mean, that was gonna be my question,

especially outlaw late models like on payment.

Those are harder and harder to get nowadays.

Yeah.

So I don't know what their payout is, but dude,

you take that, uh, 4,000 times 25 ain't hard to

figure out.

That's a hundred K on a regular show sitting there

and I guarantee you as payout probably eat that.

Yeah.

And that's what payouts are usually dog shit.

Yeah.

And even the week four, they said they've been

getting 3000.

So that's 75 K, you know, so his payout was

like, you know, a lot of him.

Hell, he's probably pocketing 40 K a night.

Yeah.

Yeah.

It looks like a two night show at the end of

August 22nd, 23rd is the Mike Parsons Memorial weekend.

Yeah.

So yeah, it was pretty, pretty good.

And they do things with kids like to give away three bikes.

And so they interview the winner, let them take

the checkered flag around the track and interview

the winner right on the front stretch.

And as they do that, one of the other

announcers grabs a kid out of the stands

and gives them a bike.

So, you know, and so I can see the very

family oriented.

They do things for the kids in that too.

So that's and, you know, Thursday night,

you're like, man, this must be a special place

to get that type of it.

Just just a regular show, you know.

And not to mention, you're not that close to much.

No, Sault Ste. Marie, you know, as close as thing it is.

Yeah, it's out in the middle of nowhere.

I mean, in the middle of nowhere or no water.

Looking at it, it looks like you had to go up

and then down and around.

Yeah, if you could want to cross the if the water wasn't

there, you could go straight across.

It's only probably about eight miles or six miles

from Sault Ste. Marie, but you got to go around.

But the roads are good.

I mean, the roads wasn't bad at all to get there.

Interstate 17 or something.

It was it was an easy cross the border.

I had a couple of people ask me today.

He's like, so what was it like crossing the border?

We haven't been super easy when we went to Canada.

The guy's like, got your passports?

Like, yeah, he's like, what are you here for?

Like, we're going to the Sioux, which we did that.

We did the lock tour on the Canada side,

which you actually got to go through both locks

American and Canadian side.

Anyways, had a beaver tail.

I had people tell me, hey, you got to have a beaver tail.

But anyways, I said, we're doing that.

And we're going to the races.

How long you be here?

Depends how long the races last for eight, nine hours.

And it's like anything in the car.

Weapons, drugs, and nope, OK.

Nice.

Have fun.

And coming back, the guy was on the phone on the American side.

He goes, sorry, that's my boss.

Well, you got to take those.

Those bosses are dicks, you know?

He started laughing.

He goes, get your passports.

I said, yeah, he goes, you buying anything you need to claim?

He said, nope.

He goes, how long was it in Canada?

I said, oh, about eight hours.

And I said, that's probably about six hours too long.

And he goes, he goes, well, then get through the gate.

He's like, let us open, you know?

He was pretty cool.

It was cool.

It was easy peasy getting through.

Yeah.

Yeah, it was a good time.

Yeah, we're good.

Got to see a couple of racetracks.

I've seen Paimon's, Ken Ross.

We've seen that.

Oh, I see Mount Pleasant Speedway.

That's right.

Because I haven't been north of Mount Pleasant for years.

Right off the road there.

Yeah, you can see it.

I've seen then a motocross track in Newberry, Michigan.

It's MX or MTX or MX motocross Speedway or whatever.

That's right on the end of Newberry.

I've seen that.

See three racetracks that I've never seen in person.

We actually walked up Ken Ross because we got off the exit,

got gas, and I'm like, I know there's a racetrack here.

It said 0.8 miles.

So it was literally just up the road.

So we went and some old fairgrounds.

We pissed in their porta-pots.

Yeah, we stood on the ground, pissed in the porta-pots,

walked up in the grandstands.

And I was like, we was actually thinking

about going there Saturday, but it got rained out.

Well, yeah, that's a Sue area.

Yes, that's above the Brit.

Yeah, that's a track I know that's been open, closed, open,

closed, and open again.

There was a dirt track there.

We're starting just into north of the Sue.

But it's like been happening for years and saying.

There's one up there that but there's so much sand up there.

Yeah, that's what I was looking like.

I don't think you can have a good race there.

Yeah, just that little lawn mower.

I suppose they put some clay on the track,

but it was so dusty, that little sand.

I mean, they did the dirt track in the field.

Yeah, and it literally had dirt on the racetrack

for the Amans on the big track as they threw the late models

on high speed for three or four laps

and dust was flying through there.

He was on a dirt track from the little four or actually three

and one didn't come out.

Three lawn mowers threw on there for 20 laps.

Like, man, no, there's no dirt tracks up there.

Yeah.

Yeah, there's that keyword in Casino saying Ignatius.

Yes.

That I know like there's a racetrack around that somewhere.

Yeah, because they're talking about the monster truck

thing up there in a couple of weeks.

Yeah.

But there's advertising the shit out of.

Yeah, I saw once upon a time, someone

talked about a track going in there.

Maybe there was a track, but I thought

it was like something new.

Someone was proposing, but.

I know they're doing a monster truck thing there.

So I wonder, I was like, man, I wonder what they got there

at the casino because believe it or not,

I passed many casinos.

I didn't go into one casino at all on this trip.

I don't believe that.

I know.

Only one race and no casinos.

I'm going to take the believe when you say believe it

or not, I'm going to take the or not part of that.

Yeah.

Our motel is only a mile from one at the one night, too.

Oh, and the other track I seen was our motel in Sioux St.

Marie on the mission side.

It was literally right next door to the I-500 snowmobile

racetrack.

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

It's a big ass track.

Yeah, so a mile.

They should scrape it off in the summer

and put a Silver Crown race on.

There's some tight corners.

Yeah, it's wide, though.

It's pretty freaking wide from what I've seen.

Yeah, we might have to go up there for the snowmobile race.

So we checked out.

So week-long deal, it's like the little 500.

A week-long deal, but the biggest.

The 500 lap race, 500 mile, 500 lap races on.

I think it's February 1st, so I'm sorry.

Yeah, it's always like right as our racing gets going,

which now that's going to change because Speed Week

for late models especially is later this year.

But yeah, it was always kind of like crossover point

where we're thinking of warmer weather

and then you got that going on up in the Arctic

pretty much.

I've seen people that says it's cool.

I've known some friends that went up to it in the motel.

Literally, we could easily walk there from.

I was like, that looks pretty cool.

Yeah, I mean, it's on flow every year, I think.

Yeah, usually Chet announces it for years.

Chet been on the podcast.

That was kind of his thing before flow.

Was it speed?

Speed, speed something?

Yeah.

Speed channel.

No, it wasn't speed channel.

Speed.

Oh, speed, yeah, I know what you're talking about.

Speed 51 or something like that.

No, something else because flow bottom,

and that's when everything became flow.

But yeah, Chet was doing that before flow bottom and all

that and still keeps them around.

So it's good.

Yeah, I mean, diverse.

But I think that put a cool place too.

Yeah, I mean, I've heard it's kind of a party

and cool time to hang out.

Well, they go all week and they have like a Queens

contest and they have all kind of stuff going on.

They have qualifier races, like tune up qualifier races

like on I think Thursday and Friday

and Saturday is the big one.

Yeah, it seems a little crazy to fly around on a snowmobile

on a mile track like that.

Yeah, it's pretty gnarly.

But well, good.

You got some racing even on a little vacation you had.

Yes.

Otherwise, locally, Attica was back in action

this weekend.

They was.

Kind of interesting setup.

They had a bounty out on the kind of 410 driver

of the year so far, the late model person.

And Kyle, so Cap was the bounty person.

Yeah.

And he ended up winning.

Yeah, and if he wins the rest of the regular shows,

then he gets 1,000 extra dollars.

Yeah, and Kyle Moore had a late model bounty.

Well, our buddy Devin Shields actually got the late model win.

And then was.

Miller got crashed in a heat race and done for the night

totaled his car.

Gotcha.

I heard.

I didn't see any pitchers or anything,

but I know him and Casey Jeterzak got together

and both flipped.

I know Miller did for sure.

And he was done for the night.

Yeah, and he was the other bounty for the 305.

So that means a couple guys picked up an extra 500 bucks

and Devin and Seth Schneider.

Schneider, yeah.

So yeah, Schneider won the 305, which

this has been his best year in a while.

Yeah, I think that's his third one in the year.

Yeah, he's been pretty good this year over at Attica.

So good for him.

Yeah, I didn't, did you hear anything special or anything?

I did not.

I know Cap won.

I know Jamie Miller flipped.

I know Schneider won and Devin won.

That's about all I've.

Yeah, I wasn't privying on much myself.

I think they had 22, 410s.

And the biggest was 305s.

They had 30 something.

I think the late models, they was 22.

Yeah.

Yeah, everybody, Devin's son, Braden, started on the pole.

So I'm going to give him shit because I got a text

because I stated wrong last weekend about his oak

shade fast qualifying time because I

thought it was of his group and it was fast overall.

Mr. Hero was going to go to zero this past weekend

because he started on the pole and finished 12th.

So I naturally had to text Devin and say, congrats on the win.

Make sure you let Braden know.

When you start up front, you're actually not,

you're supposed to stay there.

Not have to worry about passing cars.

But he said, Grandpa Dennis said, checkers are records.

The Braden and Devin said it was almost records.

So I didn't get the particulars.

But yeah, so I've got to give Braden a little shit.

Well, it costs you some more money.

Yeah, no kidding.

Oh, otherwise, Sharon raced Saturday night

because Fremont was off with the fair going on,

where Cap Henry got himself another win.

11th of the season.

Yeah, he's been pretty tough at Sharon in the past

and had, again, a weekend off over at Fremont.

So he made it happen over there.

Trying to see where my finish is.

Cap Henry, Jeremy, Weaver Car Bowser, your top three.

But yeah, a few guys from our area, me and or over that way.

But Wayne County raced as well on Saturday

after racing Tuesday with the All-Stars.

Henry Malcolm won there.

Won there, win, both nights.

Yeah, he won the All-Stars.

he was really, really tough in the boss deal.

And hasn't raced as much the last few years.

The Montpelier Speedway raced on Saturday night.

Also had non-wing sprint cars on the card.

It was a Terry Hall Memorial, I believe,

which was a boosted purse for modified.

A huge purse.

Was it 2,500 or?

I think it is.

It was like $4,000.

It is a lot.

But unfortunately, Rain came, cut their night short.

Modifieds and all that were delayed.

I believe they got the sprint cars in though.

I haven't seen or heard details, but apparently he was in accident.

It was just in hot laps, I believe.

And ended up going to the hospital.

Still in the hospital.

Wasn't it, they think his brain was bleeding or something

to start?

He does have a brain bleed in he can't move.

They said he has feeling in his,

I thought it was his left leg, maybe it's his right leg.

He's trying to will his left leg to move.

Said supposedly he has feeling in his toes,

but he can't move his leg.

But they think maybe with the brain bleed going away,

maybe that has something to do with it.

Sounded like he had some real food yesterday.

I'm reading the last update at about 5.20 yesterday,

Hoping to move him to Saginaw for some rehab

and physical therapies in Grand Rapids, Michigan,

right now at a hospital, which one of the best medical towns

there is, probably, to be honest.

And he has, you know, we've also been up there for years.

He's had a couple of cars.

He's an older gentleman, so.

He's built more like us than he is most race car drivers,

so hopefully it gets well soon.

All-Star Circuit Champions were in action at Bloomington

on Friday night and then Paragon on Saturday night.

Not too bad of car counts going to, you know,

non-Wing country, about 23 on Friday night

and around the same on Saturday.

21, I think, on Saturday.

Parker Price Miller got the win on Saturday,

and who won Friday?

It's coming to me.

Tim Schaefer.

That's right, 69th All-Star win for Tim Schaefer,

which kind of cool.

He's been outracing, but he hasn't been the Tim Schaefer.

We've seen over the years lately.

Saturday night race was brutal, was it?

Yeah, I watched it.

Because we got home in time, and I watched.

The AMane was just coming on at like 9.30,

and at about 11, it was over.

Had a fuel stop with two laps to go.

Evidently, they wasn't doing the two-spin roll,

because at least two cars spun three times.

But about three quarters of a field spun,

I think they'd go a lap spin.

Darren Nida, he was leading in.

I didn't see exactly what happened,

but he was battling.

He dropped back third.

And I don't know if he got knocked off the track

or just slid off the track.

I think he might have got forced a little bit, I'm not sure.

There was some contact with some place throughout the field,

but there was a lot of spins.

A lot of spins.

Well then, Devin Borden was leading.

He had a huge lead.

And coming down five to go, he's going into turn three.

He's entered higher than the car with this ball going.

He's running out of fuel.

I know he is.

And then he started running lower on the track,

and it started sputtering.

So somebody spun with two to go.

And he was done.

He was coasting, and he coasted it into the pits.

And they went around another three, four laps,

and they said, oh, we're going to call an open red.

Then they gave him a spot back because it wasn't the lead

as where he blended in at.

And it was, yeah, it was, there's a lot of racks,

a lot of cautions, a little bit of weight, you know?

which has made it 50 years that he's won a sprint car race out

of the 52 he's been racing.

50 years, he's won races now, which that's cool.

It's funny, I've seen the interview with him,

and they're like, well, man, it's 2,500 to win, too.

He goes, that's better than a sharp stick in the eye.

Yeah.

Talk about a guy who's just grinded forever.

Oh, yeah.

52 years he's been racing and still winning.

Him and Sammy have the longest streaks of racing years

and wins, because Sammy has won 50 years and so has Danny's.

That's hard to believe, I mean, in all honesty.

Yeah, it's crazy.

I mean, still at their age to be competitive enough to win.

Yeah, even if it's like OVSCA, obviously the cars

are a little different, but it's

not like anyone's just going to hop in a car and win

either, like you got to know what you're doing.

They had a good weekend, because Josh Davis,

I know he listens to the show, known him

to the first win in 12 years on Friday night.

Oh, wow.

Yeah, Josh got the win.

Yeah.

Then somebody fed him a right rear, I guess,

on Saturday going down the front stretch.

He was not happy.

It's like, great weekend turned.

He goes, I get it.

He goes, I do it, but I don't.

He says, what about at least better

if it was in the corner or something?

He says, literally right down the middle of the front

stretch, he got ran over.

He's like, it's really sucks.

He says, what's down the middle of the front stretch?

Yeah, so well, speaking of right rears,

talk about topless 100.

Jonathan Davenport won his, I believe, second or third?

I don't know, to be honest.

I can't remember, but it's a home win for him,

his car owners, literally his car is in Batesville,

pretty much, and Nutrienag, all that's based down there.

That's why his car was green this year.

But the talk on Friday night and the second semi-feature,

Garrett Alberson and Kay Dillard got into a little kerfluffle.

The thriller was not thrilled.

He made it thrilling, but Garrett Alberson throwing a,

I mean, that was a lap eight restart.

I mean, a little aggressive slider, but he cleared them.

And Kay Dillard said, fuck you, and just stayed on it.

And yeah.

As one of those sliders that we see 1,000 times a weekend.

It was pretty much a midget slider.

Yeah, where Dillard was going to have to let off,

and he just chose not to.

And he monster trucked, I mean, if you see the picture,

he monster trucked him.

He's way in the air and totaled Alberson's car

and dicked up the Dillard's car pretty good too.

Yeah, it was pretty bad for both.

Yeah, Dillard usually, you know, it

sounded like they've had some run-ins before.

And I don't know if he just, you know, some people get pissed.

I mean, I've never thought Kayd was that way,

but man, he made it very clear that if it happens again,

he will not be afraid to total Garrett Alberson's car again.

Yeah.

So he said he saw him coming up.

He had momentum.

So Alberson coming up because I attempted to turn down,

but once I see him we're making contact,

he says, no, I didn't lift.

So yeah, it's one of those where it's, you know,

side jobs only as good as the person you're pulling it on,

you know, so.

Yeah, I mean, when you throw one like that,

you're hoping the guy behind your brakes just didn't this time.

Yeah.

And there's people on both sides saying, hey, you know,

that's happens when you throw our slider that way.

And I see people, OK, Dillard's the biggest asshole

there is, blah, blah, blah.

I mean, I like both drivers.

Yeah.

I do.

I like both drivers.

And I mean, I didn't really see anything wrong with it.

I mean, it's a typical slide job.

Yeah, nowadays it's one of those.

Bobby Pierce had worse ones last weekend

on John and Davenport.

And Davenport had worse ones on Pierce, you know?

But it's just how people race today.

I mean, you know, they throw these sliders

that they're banking on you letting off.

Sometimes guys don't.

And so who's in the wrong?

Is it the guy that throws a slider

that you're like, OK, I know I'm going to clear him.

But I ain't going to clear him enough that I'm

going to have momentum that he's going to have to let off.

So is he in the wrong or is the guy not letting off in the wrong?

You know?

Yeah.

It's one of those 50-50, I think.

It's like, if you're going to throw a slider like that,

don't be pissed if you get taken out.

Yeah.

I mean, that's the way I look at it.

Yeah.

I mean, that's the responsibility of the thing.

You're making a decision, and you're

hoping the other guy makes a decision.

Well, he's going to make a decision,

and you're hoping it's the one in your favor.

Sometimes it's not, so you can't be pissed.

And Garrett wasn't.

And Garrett's like, maybe I did wrong.

Maybe I'll look at it.

But I didn't think I had him cleared, which he did.

But like I said, it's one of those where you're clearing him,

but you know he's screwing his momentum.

But that's the way people race today.

And not just late miles, sprint cars, midgets,

modifies, whatever.

Like Dwayne said, two drivers I like as well.

Garrett's like the nicest guy.

I don't know, if you're a race fan

and you go up to Garrett Alberson pretty much at any time

of the night, he's always got a smile on his face,

and he's always willing to say hi, it seems like.

He's setting the hill at Charlotte last year.

He's setting the lawn chairs, or not last year,

or year before.

And the chair is right in front of his talk.

Every day, I mean, he's.

I mean, dad, we're walking through the pits of Fairberry

and we were just walking by and he smiles and says,

oh, hey guys, how you doing?

We're like, hey, like, you know, just nice guy.

So yeah, and that's what I mean.

But, you know, I mean, yeah, said it's one of those just

deals you throw a slider like that.

You can't be mad if you get taken out because you're

reliant on that guy.

But the big news on the weekend was old Donnie shots.

Got fired, like, what, right after we did the show?

Yeah, it was, yeah.

Fired, and you said, well, dirt nerds are recording.

So let's make sure we announce it after they're done.

Yeah, they made fun of me for years, so screw them.

Yeah.

So Don Don got released.

I saw people, I've had people texting me about it.

I said it's surprising, but also not surprising.

No.

And supposedly, they both knew about it

from some people that was talking to me on the inside

basically saying they knew after Knoxville

was going to have it.

I suppose they thought both parties knew,

but it didn't sound like Donnie really.

Donnie, yeah, it's not like Donnie really knew.

I read his interview with Flo with Kyle McFadden,

and it sounded like, yeah, he was not in the loop on that one.

Had to talk to Tony for months, it sounds like,

and kind of, we all know he's had some frustrations

lately, and.

Yeah, that team.

Surprised it was not.

Yeah.

I thought he would leave, in all honesty.

Yeah, I thought it probably end up into a few argument

with him and Tony, and that's probably how it would end.

We weren't far from that, but on Donnie's defense,

like he came to their team with his cars, his chassis,

his motors, and he kicked ass for whatever, eight, 10 years.

Hey, he'd been with them for 18 years,

which that's almost unheard of.

And then they switched to Ford,

and then they start changing a few things.

And all of a sudden, he's not competitive, and Donnie

will tell you, he's hard on people.

He's competitive, so I'm sure it hasn't been great living

with him the last few five, six years with how it,

because they started, what, 19?

They started the Ford engines, which is pretty much the time

when everything started going a little further south.

Maybe Ricky Warner was gone by then, too.

I can't remember.

No, I don't.

Well, I think Ricky Warner was there

when they started the Ford stuff.

Oh, yeah, he was.

So, but anyway, time wine, Donnie's biggest

successes with TSR were those first, however, eight, 10 years

where they had kind of the stuff he knew.

At least 10 years, because he won like 10 Knoxville Nationals,

like nine in a row or something.

Yeah, but the package he knew he was good with

was when they were good, and then they

started deviating from it.

That's when kind of frustration seemed to start, but.

Yeah, a lot of, because it had been well known,

Tony said that he'd have a car

till Donnie didn't want a car anymore with him.

And, you know, so it was TSR going to shut down.

Yeah.

We are told no.

Yeah, we have been told no.

So that tells me that Geel Selze will be in it.

Yeah, that was Dwayne's guess.

Because, I mean, Stewart's close with the Selze family,

and Geel obviously ain't going to have a ride if Sunshine

comes back in February like he wants.

I would say the only way Tony will keep going is if Geel,

I could be wrong, maybe it'll be Spencer Basin.

I doubt it, but I would say Geel Selze

will be in the TSR ride.

Well, and if you think of timing, how everything lines up,

right, like, when did Geel quit before Courtney got hurt?

I think so.

OK, because I was thinking if it was Vice Versa,

did that whole thing trigger?

Yeah, because it was like the day before.

Yeah, because he passed his day before,

two big days before.

I think he was like Wednesday or Thursday,

and Tyler was like Friday or something.

But yeah, just the way it all plays out,

it seems like probably since the King's Royal,

there's been some conversations, we'll say.

Yeah, my guess is it'll be Geel.

Yeah, but that led to Donnie kind of being

rideless to Tacla's home area pretty much

the next few weeks.

To his phone blowing up off the wall.

And in one interview, I think he said

he's got 17 different ride offers or something.

I'm sure it's probably 30, yeah.

And he said it's kind of one of those,

you don't know what to do, where to go.

But at the end of the day, the plan

was that it's going to stick with Todd querying.

A big game motor sports offered him a ride.

For seven races.

For seven races, which I mean, you can't say no to that,

right?

The hottest team in the country pretty much

offering you a ride.

And there's a rumor last year

that the big game was going to have two cars this year.

Remember that rumor last winter, going around, going around.

Didn't take long to get a second car together.

Yeah.

But unfortunately, it was the only car for that second team.

And it did not last long.

And then the whole contingency of racing the three weeks

was not tearing shit up.

Well, unfortunately, early in the night at Ogilvy,

that was not the case of what happened.

It was a hotlapse or?

No, I thought it was first lap of the AMane.

I thought.

Donnie ended up getting up in the cushion, I believe.

Did something Donnie usually don't do?

Yeah, getting wrecked in the car and beyond repair for Saturday.

So Lundstrom Motorsports actually came on board

to field his ride for Saturday, which he made the dash

and had a respectable finish in a new team, new car.

So pretty crazy there.

See what he's racing tomorrow night.

Because they're back in Mississippi.

Yeah, Mississippi Thunder up in Wisconsin.

Yeah, so who knows.

Yeah, it would be another car.

And it sounded like the big game thing was kind of like,

as of Saturday, because Donnie put a video out saying,

hey, I'm racing for Lundstrom.

This is why, because the big game deal, blah, blah, blah.

Sounded like as of then, it was still like,

we don't know if we're going to have that car ready or not.

So I mean, you're Todd querying.

You got some resources to make some things happen.

But like Donnie said, he didn't

want to take that ride and impact David Gravel's run

for a championship at all.

So.

And the Lundstrom deal seemed to go pretty well.

I mean, made the dash first night in the car,

and you're right in his backyard stomping grounds.

So it sounded like.

I remember a couple of weeks ago when

I said Donnie should drive for Jason Sides,

because when he set his car up, whatever his car passed.

That may come true.

A phone call I had with a friend saying,

Donnie's been sucking.

And I go, well, I said, look at Attica.

I go, I don't know who the hell Tony's got working

on that car for him.

But I said, Attica, he couldn't get out of his own way

until Jason Sides comes down.

And he goes forward 21 spots or something or more.

Yeah.

So it wouldn't surprise me.

It wouldn't surprise me if Donnie just

did his own deal because he's been around these nieces a lot.

He says he's not.

So looking at interviews and stuff,

he said, I don't want to get.

He's probably going to be the Sides car.

A, he says, I can't really operate out

at Fargo, North Dakota for the word of outlaws,

logistically.

And he goes, I'm trying to give my nieces their time.

I don't want to take away from that for myself.

And obviously, it's Donnie fucking Shots.

He'll get a ride.

One niece won the 305s last night.

And the other got second in the late model, I think.

So obviously, he's going to get a ride of some kind.

Having fun and enjoying life now and you get Donnie

having fun like he used to when he first started.

The Donnie shots I used to party with a Knoxville.

And you get him relaxed and no pressure in the right situation.

I guarantee you he thinks he's got something to prove,

even though he don't, because he, all these people

has been talking shit about him, but he's washed up.

He's, yeah, don't be surprised if he gets in the right

situation and he pops off about 12 to 15 wins next year.

extra deal, like to come out in a new car the first night

came home with a podium finish.

after kind of a rough Knoxville Nationals,

ironically, next to his teammate who won.

Then to Placerville on Saturday night

were substitute driver Justin Sanders

and the 87 Rich Sun Racing car.

Stole one on the last lap.

Kale Montgomery led and led and led

and was having some issues the last few laps in traffic.

And I was seeing the last four laps.

I tried watching it and I fell asleep and I woke up

and I was restarting with four to go and I seen it.

And it was hell of a finish.

Yeah, Corey Lysin finished in third.

So a good run for him.

Brad Sweetforth from 15th.

Seems like Brad's been starting in the back a lot this year,

having to make a lot of things try to happen.

It's almost like he's retired, guy.

Yeah, so some news happening across some things.

I guess since we're on high limits,

we can talk about that.

They announced a rule change or rule enforcement,

we'll say, for the restarts.

A lot of chatter has come about on restarts,

especially with outlaw shows, it

seems like where guys in the back will

fire before the leaders fire and get out of line.

It's happened for years.

Yeah, it's been a thing forever.

Do it good.

You can jump three, four rows easily.

Danny Dietrich and Zach Hampton, chirping

each other on Twitter on and off since the Nationals

or since Pennsylvania, we'll say.

But High Limits announced the rule change

that if you fire before the leader does,

you will be penalized or they'll throw a caution.

Look like they listened to Danny Dietrich.

Yeah.

I tell you races against them.

Yeah, then they'll be out of line every time.

Yeah, High Limit guy will get a jump and it'll be OK.

Any car out of line and or passing

before the front row has fired will bring out a caution

and or any car side by side or overtaking a car

before the turn four cone once leader has fired

will be penalized two positions per car

past on the next flag change.

See that one was kind of confusing to me

when it's a side by side because they do double

fire restarts.

So you're going to be side by side.

Whole field is going to be side by side.

I kind of look at that as like, do you not want like good

restarts then?

Like, you know.

Wait a minute.

Got to be follow the leader.

You're side by side.

You can't be side by side.

So are we going single file restarts?

Because you're going to be side to the other guy.

Does the outside role get penalized?

Yeah.

for this year.

I don't know.

I'm interested to hear what you think.

But for the first time ever, American racers

will be allowed to compete for the Modifies and the Late

Models.

Event management has determined its best interest competitors

to have an alternative, more affordable tire option.

As always, Hooters, Hooters, Hooters tires.

Hooters racing tire will be permitted as well.

Hooters tires might not be more affordable.

Hooters are fine.

They'd be better to look at.

Bring your Hooters.

Perfectly fine.

They might Hooters off-melt.

Conducting a private on-track test later this fall,

which will properly compare both brands

and determine if any additional rule changes are necessary.

So what do you think, Dwayne?

I don't know.

Obviously, Colty's not getting any money from either tire

place or not getting tire money from Hooters, so.

I saw one driver say their praises about this rule.

I did, too.

In the comments, I saw another driver pretty much

say how it's not that great, because Hoosier gives all this

money to people and was not supporting them.

And I was like, OK.

So it's an open show, so you can do whatever you want.

because it's an invitation race only now.

Before it was open and they took so many entries,

so it doesn't matter.

They're inviting guys.

And the majority of the guys is probably

going to get invitations, which I do see.

There are some smaller teams, which thankfully,

because it's how some of these smaller teams make

a ton of money that come famous.

I mean, they might do something stupid

and sell a ton of t-shirts.

Some of these guys might be racing on an American racer,

so then they don't have to buy $2,000 worth of tires

to compete for the week.

So I think that's cool, because we

know drivers are coming in from all over the country,

not just Illinois, Ohio, Michigan,

where who's your tires are ruling, which I hell,

I think done an American racer do some of the mission

now, too, though?

Oh, yeah.

They've always kind of had a little bit.

And then the ULMS, late model series in Pennsylvania,

switched American racer now.

That's what I mean.

So it gives those guys, because there are some ULMS guys there,

like what, Dan Heston, those guys last year.

So now they don't have to go buy $2,000 worth of tires.

So I mean, I think it's a very smart move on Cody's part.

And I don't see why there should

be a big controversy about it, because it's an open show.

Who's your obviously wasn't giving Cody money,

or I'll see he wouldn't have done it.

I remember back in the day, like, American racer

was around for world of outlaw teams and stuff,

and they could run them.

But there was a, you know, when we were doing longer races

on different track surfaces, they weren't better.

They were cheaper, but you would wear them down faster.

They wear them down quicker.

But this track, who gives a shit?

Yeah.

Whatever.

Slap them on and go.

Right?

You know, take a couple PSI out of them,

give yourself some more grip, and let her eat.

Yeah.

And most guys, I ain't going to be able to run them,

because most of them are going to have contracts with Hoosier.

It's going to be the little guys that's

going to be able to, which, again, I applaud him,

because it takes a lot to run this deal.

And some of these little guys he's going to let in,

they don't have to go buy brand new tires.

I mean, they might buy brand new tires.

But you know what I'm saying?

They don't have to go put $2,000 worth of rubber

on the car to be there all weekend.

Yeah.

I mean, I like it as a, hey, let's try it.

Why the hell not?

Like I said, it's not necessarily controversy,

but it's just kind of pushing against the norm, which

some people will talk.

Some people have wanted anyway.

So it's not like he's alienating himself

as their own person.

That was your chance, you know, too, if you've,

for all of them, let's talk to talk.

We need a better tire.

Screw Hoosier and that.

Go out and buy some American racers.

and then say, well, we're barely making any money.

And I was like, what, $225?

And they used to be $160 for years.

Yeah, Sprint cars are $365, even for the left rear.

$365 for both right and left.

Or maybe late models are $260 now.

Again, it's changed so much, I can't.

I just remember years ago, it was $160 for late model tires.

Right here used to be $200 forever for a Sprint car.

And now they're $365, $365 for buying the left rear

is the same.

And the front tires are ridiculous.

You could get a set of front tires, like $180, $200 for a pair.

Now they're over like $350 for a pair.

Yeah.

I mean, I get it.

Everything's been getting more expensive.

Still, you're going to bankrupt the racer.

So why not try something?

I mean, we were kind of told back when those increases came,

2020, 2021 was a supply shortage in this and that, right?

So we have to increase due to supply shortage.

And he's had a couple wins in it.

Yeah, he's done the best of a lot of people.

He went out door a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, he's probably one of the best that's been in it.

Other news.

We talked about injuries, another one to mention.

I don't know when it was really known or announced,

but Robert Baloo, I would have used that competition

for a little bit.

It just got announced the other day.

He said he broke it at Bloomington.

What did he break?

T, like three, four, and five, or T, four, and five, and seven,

or something?

I think he skipped one.

But he says the best new part of it

is that he hasn't already broke his back before.

But he's going to be out at least eight weeks.

And he's a guy that still works full time on that too.

So I don't know how that's hindering him.

I actually sent him a message the other day,

and he hasn't replied yet.

But I see he's got shirts out that says,

what, fractured, not retired or something like that?

And he has been on kill Kokomo this year.

Smackdown starts this week, which

So it's got to be kicking the nuts to miss this, for sure.

Other news, announcing ride departures.

Spencer Hughes departs the JCM Motorsports ride,

which this past weekend was filled by Joseph Joyner.

Just for the weekend, there was no plans past that.

Yeah, everybody, Chase Schaeffer said he was surprised

when I walked in the shop and Joseph Joyner was there.

He messaged me.

He's like, wow, I can tell you

who's in the car this weekend.

Kind of surprised.

Yeah, Spencer wanted to focus more on his stock car business.

He builds and races a stock car down out of Mississippi there

and actually has a street stock chassis business called

Four-Way Fab Shop.

So 23 years old, still a young kid,

but just kind of got to the point

where he didn't want to travel as much.

And the car owner wanted to continue

Lucas Oil point racing, so decided to depart ways.

Do you think it has anything to do with what he was in the news

about there a few weeks ago?

Well, he had the ride after the few weeks.

He did, but maybe there's.

I saw a lot of people saying that it was not an issue.

He wasn't really guilty of anything.

I heard it was kind of a.

He got set up or something.

I don't know, Chick was pretty much out to get him

or something or didn't like something.

And reported it to something.

So I don't know.

That's just what you hear chatter-wise.

Obviously, there's a lot of other things to work out there.

But I just kind of wondered.

I kind of just like, hmm, that's interesting

that happens so quick after that.

Yeah, you know, who knows?

I mean, I like Spencer Hughes and I met him, Chase,

introduced him and Chase, you know,

was going to try to get him to drive a sprint car

a few times and it sounded like he would be interested in it.

And it just never happened.

I mean.

Haven't word about laws also word about all late models,

we'll say, raced at Mocaqueta.

I did learn what it was called.

Farms or whatever team that's their first ever

as a team is a World Outlaw win.

because he won at Davenport, Iowa a couple years ago.

I thought he said it was his first outlaw win.

Or maybe I know it's the team's first one.

Yeah, he's just had bad luck for the last few years.

Second win after winning $5,000

to winning Kentucky for a regular.

It's his first word of outlaws victory

since a semi-feature, Talladega, in 2023.

His last full field win came November 2022

at Charlotte World Finals.

So he's been, yeah, always been talented, just.

We were like clasher when we went down to the Lucas Oil

race at Brownstown.

I mean, back when he had his own car when he was in

between rides for a little bit,

And he's out there sitting there doing his own tire work

of that.

And he's there running in the top 10.

It's like, those type of guys, yeah.

well, I-96 got the All-stars on Friday.

So if you want to stay in Michigan, Butler.

I know added like 20, there's like 2,600 bucks added

to the Amain purse right now.

And I know there's at least some heat race sponsors,

like 131 bucks to win for a couple of heat races.

I think all the heat races are going to be.

Amain's going to start, pay 331 to start.

So if you win your heat race in Sarte Amain,

you're going to have over 460 bucks.

Yeah.

It's going to be 3,100 to win.

I know like 1,200 per second, 1,000 per third.

So it's going to be one of the highest paying.

Well, it's going to be the highest paying regular show

Butler has all year.
