The in-vehicle rider experience is about how comfortable and enjoyable it is for passengers inside a car. It includes things like seats, temperature control, and screens for entertainment.
A robo-taxi is a self-driving car that picks up and drops off passengers without needing a human driver. It's like a taxi, but it drives itself using technology.
Lucid Motors is a company that makes electric cars, focusing on luxury and performance. They are known for their high-end models like the Lucid Air and the upcoming Gravity.
there are over 100 robo-taxies in the engineering test fleet. The Gravity vehicles are fitted with
next-gen sensor array featuring high-res cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radars that will
provide a 360-degree perception model as well as a, quote, purpose-built roof-mounted halo
designed to maximize sensor visibility. Uber is customizing some things for the Gravity so that
it is specifically catered to robo-taxi riders. For the first time, Uber is designing the in-vehicle
rider experience which will include interactive screens with entertainment and climate control
options as well as support contacts and vehicle maneuver requests like a request to pull over.
It will also have in-vehicle visualization showing what the robo-taxi sees and its path in real time.
This will be a nice transition for those who are skeptical about driverless vehicles
and will show what the vehicle and its sensors, lidar, and cameras see. I like that.
The Gravity is also a sizable SUV which will give riders space for themselves and their luggage.
So yes, the halo that they're talking about, it's a hat. It is wearing a hat just like the
Waymo's currently do and the Tesla's do not. And thus, this is not going to be a situation as
Tesla is promising with their service where someone can enter their own car into the robo-taxi
fleet. But here's how I look at this. The more safe autonomous ride-hailing options we have,
the better. Not only for occupant safety and pedestrian safety and people in other cars
safety, but for occupant prices. If Tesla's robo-taxi network were to, let's just hypothetically
say this isn't actually going to happen, but if it were to drive Uber or Lyft out of business,
again not saying that is going to happen because it probably wouldn't. But just for the sake of
What incentive would Tesla have without serious competition to continue to undercut
Uber's pricing significantly, which I can tell you from over a dozen robo-taxi rides that I have
taken and compared pricing to Uber on is absolutely the case. Pardon me. They are doing that right
now. Every time I hail a robo-taxi, I double check, I cross check the price against Uber and
Waymo. And every single time so far, the robo-taxi has been significantly cheaper than Uber for sure.
And sometimes Waymo is close, but it's never been, I've never, at least in my experience,
I've yet to see Waymo come up with a cheaper price for the same route
at the same time than Tesla's robo-taxi. Now, granted, I know that there is a separate
discussion to be had about things like urban traffic congestion and how much of these ride
hailing driverless passenger cars does a city want running around versus, say, people using
mass transit that doesn't take up as much space on the streets, stuff like that. But that is neither
here nor there for the purposes of this story. Let's see what Lucid, Uber, and Nuro can do with
this partnership. When they roll it out, I'll try it. I'd love to try it. I have yet to sit in a
Lucid gravity, let alone ride in one, so I'll give it a go once it rolls out here in my neck of
the woods. Side note, while I'm on the subject of robo-taxi, if anybody out there happens to be
on the Tesla robo-taxi team, I have a bit of feedback. Now, I did already submit this feedback
via an email survey that they sent out after my last ride. But those of you that have a Tesla
with a second-row screen in it, so new Model 3, new Model Y, new S, new X, or Cybertruck,
you probably are aware that if there's nobody sitting in the front passenger seat,
you can, from the back seat, from the second-row screen, move that front passenger seat forward
to give yourself more leg room. So that functionality is already baked into the Teslas. However,
the robo-taxi software is hiding it. It does not make it available to passengers.
And I would like them to do so, because I had this happen in a Waymo, and it was the same thing,
there was no ability to move the passenger seat forward from the screen in the back seat.
So for Tesla, you already have that functionality, please just surface it
in the robo-taxies. That is my constructive bit of feedback that's hopefully pretty quick and
seamless. Alright, that is everything I've got for you in the world of Tesla and other EV news,
but there is plenty more to go in this week's Ride the Lightning, starting with the Ride the
Lightning hotline. If you've got a question, comment, or discussion topic for the podcast,
I would love for you to call in, because there's a chance you could hear yourself on the show,
and I love hearing from my audience. There are two easy ways to call in. Either use your smartphones,
built-in voice recording software, record your 90 second or less question, just I try to ask that
you keep it to 90 seconds or less, so I can get to as many people each week as possible,
then email that file to me, that recording, send it to teslapodcastatgmail.com,
or you can take that same 90 second or less question and call in and leave a message on
the Ride the Lightning hotline, it's a toll free number you can dial at any time, and the number
is 1-888-989-8752, that number again, 1-888-989-TSLA, and if you know someone special out there with
an upcoming birthday, anniversary, graduation, or some other special occasion, you can give them a
unique gift of recorded voices from friends and family telling them why they're special. The
recordings can be podcasted like I do with them, or put onto a keepsake for the recipient,
visit lifeonrecord.com to learn more. First up this week is Robert from Near Philly.
Hey Ryan, it's Robert from Near Philly. I was planning on sending you an FSD enhancement
request, hoping the Tesla team would hear and implement it, but I think it's kind of turned
into a pro tip. Basically, I was going to ask for a way to select head in or back in parking
in a driveway or parking lot. At my home, my Tesla would seem to randomly pick
one or the other when navigating there via FSD, but head in is what I wanted
due to the charger being mounted on the wall on the left side, head in, which is where the
large port is on a Tesla. Meanwhile, at supermarkets, it would always tend to back in, which
is a good thing if you're at a safety-related place such as, say a mine, where during an
emergency you don't want everyone backing out and bobbing into each other, so it's a requirement
at many safety-oriented locations to back in. But at a supermarket, I want the rear of the car
accessible for loading a lot of groceries, so I was going to suggest some sort of option on the
screen. Well, they just added rock navigation capabilities, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Today, I said, take me home and pull into the driveway head in, and Eve responded that she
would do exactly that, and the car did it. It's stuff like this why I would never recommend
anyone buy any other EV or even ICE vehicle other than a Tesla. They're just so far ahead.
Robert, this is fantastic. I didn't quite want to call this a pro tip just yet,
because we need to find out if it's repeatable. So if it's repeatable, it just adds an extra layer
of awesomeness to that grok integration on the AI4 cars. I got to test this out myself the next
time that I go somewhere where I want the car to park itself at when I get there, because I have
a weird garage situation. My FSD is not yet capable of wiggling its way into my garage,
but Robert, let me know if you can try this multiple times and see if you can make sure
that it's repeatable. And if anybody else out there wants to try this as well, please let me know
your results. Next up this week, here's Al from Maryland.
Happy New Year, Ryan. This is Al from the East Coast in Maryland. I wanted to make a recommendation
to the engineers at Tesla related to the most common or most recent software update,
specifically the hands-free driving. While I really like most of the updates with the
FSD update, I'm currently running version 14.2.1.25. The hands-free driving operation has
one main issue from my perspective. I don't know when it's engaged or not. Ideally,
I'd recommend that there should be an annotation either on the screen or as part of the new dash cam.
That's the driver know if the features on or off. Thanks for hosting your great podcast,
I'm definitely a super fan. Al, happy New Year to you as well and thank you for your call.
I think you make a reasonable point and request here. The tiny little green dot at the top right
of the screen, that's the primary way to know that hands-free mode on FSD is on. When it's green,
it's on. When it's not, it's not. The good news is that the car is still in control even if hands-free
is not activated and of course after a short while you would get that big text on screen asking you
to get your hands on the wheel, put a little apply force, apply pressure to the wheel in case you
don't realize that the hands-free mode is not activated for some reason, be it due to you
wearing a hat and temporarily blocking the cabin facing camera. I run into that one a lot
or it's too dark inside the cabin for it to see you. Well, I've run into that one as well
or maybe something else. But yeah, I think a more prominent way of indicating that hands-free mode
on FSD is active would be a beneficial thing for everybody. Cheers Al, thank you so much for calling
in. Next up, talking about Grock from earlier, here's Jay from Chicago with some more grocky goodness.
Hey Ryan, this is Jay from Chicago. I have a 2024 Foundation Series Cybertruck and I was just chatting
with Grock the other day during my drives and I accidentally, I don't know, kind of stumbled upon
some hidden features that Grock had. I thought the only new feature we had was
integration point-to-point navigation, like multi-point, which works great. But also, I stumbled
upon a feature that Grock knows a little bit about your car. It knows the make model, the year,
I knew that my part of the foundation series, I knew I had full self-driving and then the kind
of whole thing. They knew the tire pressure of all four tires and my back right tire was low at
42 psi and then Grock actually told me, you should probably go ahead and fill that up as soon as you
can. The recommended pressure was 50 and I already know all this. I know like what the psi is and
what the set it as, but for someone who doesn't know, Grock could be insanely useful as you're
a great reminder. Yeah, Grock is awesome. Thank you. Bye.
Jay, I love this. It borders on being a pro tip, but I'm going to play it here as a regular
call regardless. It's just, it's awesome. That's the bottom line here. I'm happy to play this.
Thank you for calling in with this and I am happy to pass it along to everybody listening
in the very likely event that others find it useful as well. Cheers to you, sir. And our final
call this week comes from Robert in Texas comparing AI three to AI four with his two cars. Go ahead,
Robert. Hey, Ryan. It's Robert from Texas with just an observation. I have two different cars. My
X has the hardware three. My Y has the hardware four. I know you have the same situation going on
in your household. And my comment is I really think the hardware four is really getting incredible
and it's kind of leaving the hardware three behind. You know, if you go back kind of three or four
months ago, I think they were pretty similar, but now it's night and day and it's kind of
irking me a little bit that my X, which is, you know, 2022 is not driving as well as the
model Y that we have. But I'm hoping Tesla as they, you know, take the safety person out of the
model Y's in Austin and get the software up. I think it's time for them to go ahead and make the
change on the v3 and get them up to speed. This lagging v3 now, I think has become more of a
problem. Thanks a lot for your show. My daughter, one of my daughters has something to say also.
Thanks for the show, Ryan. Thank you. Keep doing what you're doing. Bye-bye.
Well, thanks so much to both of you for calling in there. I completely hear you on AI3 versus AI4.
The gulf between them just continues to widen. Now, as you know, we're supposed to get a v14
light on the hardware three cars in Q2 of this year. So in somewhere between basically three to
six months from now, effectively three to five months, I guess, which, I mean, until Tesla proves
me otherwise, I'm just going to assume that that's going to ship on June 30th at the earliest, which
is the last day of Q2. If they want to pleasantly surprise me by delivering it earlier, great.
Now, how v14-ish that version feels for hardware three cars remains to be seen, of course.
And we also have no idea where the AI4 cars will be by the time that version drops.
Are we still going to be on version 14? Probably. But could v15 have come out by then? Yeah,
it's possible. I think we have to presume, again, until Tesla proves otherwise, that this v14 light
is going to be the end of the line for the hardware three cars in their current hardware state. So
therefore, I hope I'm wrong, would love to be wrong. But if anybody else agrees with that
principle, and I'm basing that just off of how things have gone, right, like we've been on 12.6
for, gosh, well over a year, right, a long time. So if that proves to be correct, then therefore,
I would not personally expect any movement on the hardware upgrades that we've been promised
until the second half of 2026 at the earliest after this v14 light has come out. And it probably
will be much later than that as well. I'm just saying that's the absolute earliest that there
might be any real movement on hardware upgrades for the AI three cars is going to be the second
half of this year. And I know that a lot of people out there are understandably skeptical
that any upgrade will ever happen. So again, it's on Tesla to make good on their word here.
Let's hope they do so in a relatively timely manner. Well, thank you, Robert. Thank you to
everybody that kindly took the time to call in this week or recently. I will get to more of
your ride the lightning hotline calls on next week's episode. But for now, we're starting to wind
things down here for the Palin dramatic episode 545. But first I wanted to move to the soul of
adventure part of the podcast where I tell you what I've been up to with my Teslas. And for this
week, I tried out a new to me method for cleaning the inside of the windshield, which as I'm sure
pretty much everybody can relate to can just be really annoying when it gets fogged up or hazy and
no matter what you spray it with or what you wipe it down with, it always seems that that sort of
fog or haze always seems to come back. And I've found a video on the out of spec detailing channel
Colton is the professional detailer there. I've mentioned him before on the podcast because I
think he's he's an exceptionally talented detail. He's up in Colorado. I like some of his videos
where he's he's going through different cleaning procedures like he had a great he was the first
person I saw that had a really excellent detailing video on the Cybertruck, which great to that one.
You know, I had I had said well in advance to all the future Cybertruck owners that it's
Windex is your friend, but Colton added in the barkeepers friend as the pre the sort of
pre Windex portion of it. And now that's that's how you get Cybertruck's looking awesome. So anyway,
out of spec detailing, I saw a video there about a regiment for cleaning that inside of the windshield.
I've just tried it out on the the spirit of adventure the 2018 car because that one's been
hazy and that's the one that lives outside. So when I take it out this weekend, I'm going to see
how it is. I'm sure it's going to be great because obviously this Colton from out of spec detailing
wouldn't have put the video out if he hadn't tested this and found that it works great.
And all the comments on that video, too, by the way are like, oh, this this works great. Thank you
so much. So I'm excited about this because if I now have a just repeatable process for cleaning
the inside windshield and keeping it nice and crystal clear, that's going to make me so so happy.
All right, time for your pro tip of the week. It comes from Joel in New Jersey.
Hi, Ryan. It's Joel from New Jersey. Just calling in with an interesting pro tip. I was just listening
to your call from last weekend and they were talking about reordering the, you know, recents and
favorites and so forth. I've found something very interesting. I never knew existed. If you slide one
of the recents off to the right, it deletes it from your history. So if there's, you know, a place
you put in and you're like, yeah, I don't want to keep that in history anymore. You can literally
just take it and slide it to the right and it erases it from the history. Never knew that was there
and people might find that helpful. Thanks so much for all you do. I did not know this one either,
Joel. So thank you very much for this. I can see this one being useful for those of you who share
your Tesla with your significant other and maybe you went somewhere to get them a special gift
for their birthday or some other occasion or what have you. And maybe you wouldn't want them to see
that location in the nav and ask you about it, right? Now, I suppose there are also nefarious
reasons that you'd want to erase certain destinations from your history, but I do try to stay positive
and optimistic on this podcast. So I'm just going to leave it at that, that you're buying them a
present and you don't want them to know about it. Thank you again, Joel. I super appreciate this
pro tip of the week. And if anybody else out there has a good Tesla or EV pro tip of the week,
I would love for you to call in with it so that I can learn from it and I can share it with the
audience and everybody can learn from it. The way to send that in is simple. It's the same two ways
that you can choose to send in a regular ride the lightning hotline call. That's also how you send
in pro tips. So refer back to a little earlier in the podcast for the instructions there.
Let me mention a few friends of ride the lightning before I go starting with abstract
ocean.com. They've got a million great aftermarket accessories for lots of different EVs, not just
Teslas, but yes, all the Teslas, the Rivians, plenty of other stuff too. A lot of interior
lighting kits, exterior lighting kits in different colors, different cool puddle lights, all kinds
of stuff. The tempered glass custom fit screen protectors made from gorilla glass for the Teslas
and for other EVs. There's just so much stuff to look at on the Cybertruck. They've got great
pre cut expel armor pieces for the non stainless trim pieces of the truck. Highly recommend those
if you want to keep your Cybertruck looking nice. There's just all kinds of stuff. You got to go
take a look abstract ocean.com and then at the top of the screen click on whichever vehicle you have
and it will show you all of the accessories that they have available for your car. Pile everything
you like into your online shopping cart then use the coupon code RTLpodcast to get 15% off of your
first order. Next up, TeslaTeacher.com, your own personal Tesla tutor. If you're new to Tesla or
you know someone who is new, maybe a friend, family member, and maybe they're overwhelmed by the
touchscreen, the autopilot, the endless features, there's a lot to take in. You are not alone.
They are not alone. These cars are packed with incredible technology and it does take time to
master. At TeslaTeacher.com, their experienced staff, Tesla owners for over six years now,

front license plate bracket. It's a nice, clean, minimalist design, but it's good. It's strong
and it's not going to mess with the looks of the front end of your Tesla or other EV because,
yes, they do have the snap plate for other EVs as well. I'm a big fan of the snap plates. You can
get yours at everyamp.com slash RTL and there's a coupon code for listeners of this podcast.
That coupon code is simply RTL. So these are what I highly recommend rather than the
plates that Tesla gives you, the mounting plate that is, the mounting bracket.
Snap plate is safety optimized with breakaway features to sacrifice itself in a worst case
scenario like a parking accident or a car wash. Snap plate plus is strength optimized with harden
features for maximum strength. Both are made from recycled made in the USA plastics with stainless
steel reinforcements. Again, get yours at everyamp.com slash RTL and don't forget the coupon code
RTL for a discount. If you're in or going to be in my neck of the woods here in the greater San
Francisco Bay area, I do highly encourage you to set up an appointment ahead of time with immaculate
reflections. Get your car looking better than ever, whether that's with ceramic coating so that
you don't have to wax the car for the next five to seven years, whether that's paint protection film
on the front end of the car or all kinds of key areas or maybe even the whole car. Maybe you want
to do paint correction service, which gets that finish looking as good as it possibly can, better
than factory new taking all those surface details, surface imperfections, little cross scratches,
all that kind of stuff comes out of that paint. I've had paint correction on both of my Model
3 performances and I could not be happier. They both look incredible. So go to the website to
book an appointment or ask any questions. That website is irdetailing.com. You'll see a contact
button either right kind of there in the middle of the homepage or in the upper left corner of it
as well. Make sure to mention that you're a ride the lightning listener and then you will get the

Elon Musk, people don't like Elon Musk. The guy founded PayPal and Tesla and people are like,
yeah but he's a troll and a bad dad. I'm like, so is mine, he did nothing to fight climate change.
Also have you been in a Tesla? Have you been in a Tesla? My buddy let me drive his Tesla,
I laughed out loud at how fast it went. Been clinically depressed my entire life
on dozens of medications in a Tesla for 13 seconds cured forever.
I mean I think a Tesla is the most fun thing you could possibly buy ever.
That's what it's meant to be. Our goal is to make, it's not exactly a car, it's actually
a thing to maximize enjoyment. It's maximum fun.
About this episode
Tesla's Model Y receives exciting design updates in China, including a larger 16-inch touchscreen and a switch to a black interior headliner across all trims. The Model Y continues to dominate global sales, with CEO Elon Musk announcing it as the best-selling car for the third consecutive year. The episode also highlights a remarkable coast-to-coast drive completed by a Model 3 using Full Self-Driving (FSD) with zero interventions, showcasing the advancements in Tesla's autonomous technology. Discussions on FSD's recognition by Motor Trend as the best tech of 2026 further emphasize Tesla's innovative edge.
As we've seen in the past, Tesla China rolled out a couple of design updates to the Shanghai-built Model Y's. I'll tell you all about them and why we'll probably see them in North America and Europe as well, sooner rather than later. Plus: Tesla's CEO says the Model Y topped global sales charts again in 2025, a Model 3 on FSD successfully completes full coast-to-coast drive with zero interventions, and more!
