Is it going to be strange to have Tony Canan as your boss?
I see it as Zach as my boss.
Okay.
As Chip as my boss right now.
Is there anything left on the bucket list?
Yeah, definitely Le Mans.
Well, maybe, you know, they turn a 500.
You know, Jimmy, we talked quite a bit about that, which would...
I love it.
Hello, folks, and welcome to Speed with Harvick and Buxton Fuel by Poet.
Let's talk racing, Will.
Let's do it, buddy, and we do it this week with a man who needs very little introduction,
but we will give him an introduction regardless.
He is a six-time IndyCar champion.
He has his name already chiseled into the Mount Rushmore of IndyCar greats,
well in the conversation, undoubted in the conversation for the greatest of all time,
second in the win list between Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt.
He is the driver of his generation.
He has won a race every year for 21 consecutive seasons.
We run out of superlatives for the man who is Scott Dixon.
So, man, how are you guys doing?
Really good, man.
How are you?
Yeah, not too bad.
Not too bad, but yeah, we've definitely got to work on the win for this year.
We're getting a little bit tired.
I think we've got seven or so to go, but looking forward to it,
we've definitely got a stretch of great races for us,
but it's been a challenging year so far.
It has, but the news that came out seven days ago,
it was rumoured for a couple of weeks and became clear very, very quickly
that this was a done deal.
You are leaving Chip Ganassi Racing after a quarter of a century to move to McLaren.
It's massive news.
We were trying to think of a driver move in IndyCar history that could relate to it.
And you've got AJ Foyt setting up his own team.
You've got Mansel coming over from F1,
but there are very few that are this big, important.
When did you make the decision?
And how hard was it to ultimately decide to part ways with Chip
and to go on this new adventure with that?
Yeah, I think as you kind of pointed out there,
there's been a lot of chatter I think for many weeks.
I think also with Felix has kind of,
I don't even know if Felix really put it out there,
but I think it was somebody else that kind of announced that he was leaving
so then that created another dynamic to it.
I think in the whole this year where you look at maybe half the field
is kind of out of contract,
so there was definitely a lot of potential for people moving.
I don't know.
For me, it's talked about it for a while.
I think if you go back to even 19,
there was a big potential in that situation
where I was going to McLaren back then as well.
So I really sat down with Chip through that process as well
and kind of discussed where we were going and what was happening.
And I guess kind of the off-season just, I don't know,
thought a lot about the situation that I was in,
what the future really holds.
There was a lot of things that kind of kept me up at night
and a lot of it was actually,
do I finish my career without trying anything else,
especially in the car?
I know there's different steps for later on
and maybe different categories
if you ever want to go down that road.
But the one thing that kept kind of nagging at me was,
should I try a different team, be with a different environment?
Don't get me wrong.
I love Chip.
He's one of my best friends.
Trust me, it was an extremely tough conversation
that we had a couple of times just about the possibility
and what it would look like
and where and when it would kind of happen.
And it's the same with the team.
I've spent more time with this team than my own family.
25 years, a lot of those people came from Pack West
when I made the transition from Pack West
to Chip and Sv Racing as well.
There was a lot of those people that came at the same time.
So yeah, definitely tough, tough decision.
But I think ultimately it just kind of came down to,
I need to try something different for right now.
What clinched it in terms of it being McLaren?
Because you're Scott Dixon.
Your choices are not going to be limited
within that IndyCar paddock.
So what was Zach able to sell you on in particular
that made McLaren now, rather than McLaren of 2019,
a different proposition and one that you are willing to stake
your reputation and this opportunity to do something different
that you were willing to stake it on that?
Yeah, I think it all comes down to timing really.
I think for me it was the opportunity
of possibly looking at something else.
There were a couple of teams and obviously the manufacturers
played a pretty big part in it as well
to maybe look at the foresight of what's beyond
maybe driving an IndyCar, what comes after that.
I think there was some differences there.
And then ultimately I think I've always been a Bruce McLaren fan.
That whole situation especially coming from New Zealand
and even talking to my dad about Bruce
and when he watched him and for me straight up
had just been a big fan of Bruce McLaren
and obviously his family and hung out with his daughter
many a times at functions and things like that.
But I think when you look at it just from the New Zealand
historic value and what it means for people back home
that's an easy sell right there.
But I wouldn't say it was just that.
I think it really just came down to timing
and honestly looking to do something different.
Back to when I went from RCR to Stuart Haas Racing
and I think back to all of those conversations
and decisions to leave the team that helped you
make your career what it was
and have all those first moments and wins
and all the different things that came with that.
And then I think back to after I made the decision
I started looking at myself and saying
okay what do I want to do different?
What do I want to change?
I looked forward to the process as being different.
So from your standpoint what do you want to change
when you go to the team as far as
because you get into this rut of well I go into this office
and I go into this team and I talk to this person
what are you looking forward to the most
when it comes to the changes that you want to make for yourself
as far as that I call it the circle of life right?
Like it's just that circle of life is challenging sometimes
when you don't have to think about it every day.
What are some of the things that you're the most excited about
from that standpoint just going in
and learning new engineers and cars
and I'm sure it's going to drive different
it's going to feel different like that to me
I needed that excitement to kind of re-invigorate my career
to get myself motivated.
I think it's everything you know I think it's
I hate to use the word baggage
because it might be just my own personal baggage
but when you look at it 24 or 25 years at the same place
you're doing the same thing obviously
I have amazing relationships with all these people
that side of it makes it tough
but then I think there's the excitement of just
really not knowing what the approach is
how they do it, what's different
I'm definitely not going into a situation of thinking
that the grass is always green on the other side
that's probably not the case
I'm with one of the best teams in the history of IndyCar Racing
I think McLaren is doing a really good job right now
obviously they've done really well this year
but yeah I think it's the processes right
whether it's even the structure of meetings
to how they approach set ups
to how they're deep diving into the finer pieces
of prepping for Indy and how they approach Indy
going back to GM I've obviously spent
probably 90% of my career with Honda
which has been fantastic relationship as well
briefly had a blip with GM
won a championship with them as well
and can see their process
and what they're doing and even from afar
when we had the Cadillac program as well
but yeah I think it's just
it's the process right
it's the process of change
the way they do DIL simulation
to the set ups for the cars
to driving style to what they really focus on
to any of the prep that they do
and I think mentally for me that's
it's going to be one big change
but also inspiring in many ways
to just do something different
did you ever just think to yourself
like I look at so many drivers
and I think we all want to stop
when we're at the peak of it
and did you ever look at yourself and say
alright I should just end right here
and do something different because of the legacy
that you have built
did you worry about that part of it
because we talked about it on this show
amongst Will and I
that's the hardest thing to know
is it actually going to be better
not going to be better
did you ever think about the legacy that
you had in IndyCar racing
and worry about what it might be
when you get done a couple years from now
because it's been absolutely fantastic
from everything that you've done
No I don't think it really was I thought
for me it's always just about thinking
what's next, what race is next
how to be better at it
I hate getting beat
the competitive fire is
no different to
any other year
I think
the passion for it, the fun that I have
doing is no different
I think I've been through many championships
in many years where you had these challenges
even dating back to the early times of 0405
was really difficult to
lost championships
by small margins but yeah
I haven't really thought about that
kind of ending portion yet
I do know that it's
absolutely a lot closer than when I started
and you're getting down that stretch
for sure but
it's interesting because
I think as you have too
I've spoken to a lot of friends that
have maybe retired
and they've really second guessed themselves on it
I think Daria was in a different situation
where he was kind of forced into it
good friend Ryan Dungey
even a couple years after
he's like man I can't believe I should still be doing it
I really miss it, I really love doing it
I enjoy the sport
so for me
I feel lucky to be able to do what I do
and I think
there's still plenty left in the tank
my focus obviously going to
another team is not to
just fulfill a seat
it's to win a 7th championship
it's to really go after
another Indianapolis 500
and that's what it really comes down to
Scott, so much of
what Zach has been talking about
in terms of bringing you into the team
is based around your experience
of what it takes to win a championship
what it takes to win that Indy 500
and all of your experience of working
within a team that can put that together
how hard is the work going to be
do you envisage behind the scenes
so not the stuff that we see on track
but back in the shop
the work that will be done
from the end of August
start of September
through to February next year
the day-to-day stuff
at McLaren's base
to create that team
well short answer is hard to know
I have not
stepped foot on the premises
have no idea
I think of you backtracked
I've been friends with Zach since 1999
I remember going to Zach Attack
or whatever the go-kart track was here
in Indianapolis that he was running
and that's where I ran into him
for the first time when I first came here
so yeah
we catch up
obviously very tight
and good friend Tony Kanan
there's a lot of people
that I've crossed paths with
obviously throughout my career
it looks like they've got
a fantastic group of people there
but no
it's going to be full-on
but I'm excited for that
I'm really excited for
something new
and I think
right now you can see
they're performing as one of the best teams
I think when you look at their road course
situation right now
their short track oval has always been strong
the street courses have been strong
this year as well
they've definitely got a good package right now
it's hard to really comment
I think until you get into that situation
and really see it firsthand
is it going to be strange
to have Tony Kanan as your boss
because
I look at Tony
as such a fun guy
do you think if you do something wrong
he's going to chew your butt
or how is that going to go
I see it as Zach is my boss
as Chip is my boss
right now
I haven't looked at the pecking order
there right now
maybe TK is my boss
but I'm totally fine with that
TK likes to be the boss
in many things
for a lot of us
that transition for TK
was one that we were like
they'll be interesting to see how it plays out
he's done a fantastic job
I'd like to say Zach's my boss
for next year
obviously Chip's my boss right now
you're joining
friends at that team
TK as your not boss boss
Ryan Hunter Ray
obviously is on the team
you're great friends with Pato
and I know Pato is Kit
your son's favourite driver
Felix is a good mate of yours
and obviously a good mate of Pato's
very good mate of Pato's
you and Felix
teammates
throughout a certain point
of your IndyCar careers
TK's talked about
recreating the kind of bromance
that he had when he was at Andretti
and all of the good things that that brought
to him and that team of drivers
where do you stand
on the
sort of mindset of
everybody getting on makes the team
better or actually a bit of healthy
competition and rivalry makes
a team better
I think it's always a bit of both
I think if you can have the relationship
of being close with your teammates
to be really open
it really just moves everybody forward
I think the clear
times for me
probably Dan Dan and I didn't
start off extremely well
we kind of really butted heads to start with
and tried to make it as painful as
it possibly was for each other
and then we kind of found a common ground
and then we became best friends
it's kind of just how it played out TK
we were immediately
close and worked really
open book, Daria was the same
I didn't really
the Felix thing happened kind of quick
I didn't really see that one coming to be honest
Did Stefan get a two for one deal?
I don't know
I don't know man
I didn't really know that that was happening
so I was kind of caught
off guard on that one as well
but yeah maybe he did
maybe he seems pretty happy right now
I bet he's just got his two
drivers at McLaren
I'm assuming he's very happy
yeah he's in a good situation
but no like Pato and I have always
been really good friends
obviously the bromance I think
is Felix and Pato
and then probably Kess and Pato
so I might be kind of the third or the fourth wheel
on this one
when you look at off the racetrack
I see
go-karts on your social media
and
I think that
for me Keelan's racing career
kind of came started at the same time
that mine was ending
and it really
reignited my passion for racing
because I remembered
why I raced and that was because
I loved racing you saw the kids
you saw the dads competition
and then everybody would go play football
or soccer or whatever it was
when they got done
does that
keep you motivated because I love
that time of my racing
career when I could do both and go to the
kart track and it just brought back
so many memories for me
standing there watching everything that
was happening and I remembered why I like to
race because racing for
me at the last
not the last couple years but the couple
years before that it wasn't really that much
fun I wasn't being challenged I didn't
have a good time and then all of a sudden
we went and raced go-karts and I was like
oh yeah racing is absolutely
the thing that I love to do has that
moment happened for you yet?
Yeah it has for sure
like I think as you said it's kind of
reignited it you know I think especially
at this age group with Kit you know I think
it gets a bit crazy not too far
from now which you would know a lot better
than me you know I kind of see
and stand back and watch the dads
and the dads as mine
you know it's made me reminisce
a lot about my dad too
and you know similar situations where Kit
doesn't really listen to me which is quite funny
he'll listen to everybody else in the paddock
like that one clip I think
at my court where we were actually having a conversation
about the start and I'm trying to you know
like because half the time he's like looking at the
other kids and the green flag goes and like
he's still sitting there wanting where everybody's gone
you know so I was
trying to tell him I'm like just focus
on the green flag and when it waves you
go but no it's
so much fun and like the energy level
that you get from it and
these young kids you know
at this age of 567 you know
it's all pretty
you know disparities large
you know the kids are really just there to have fun
you know I'm really tense and worried
more in the fact that you know Kit's
quite aggressive we've had
some instances where he
I told Will Power on my man
I've got a Will Power on my hand here like
he sees he's full
on you know so I've got to I get worried about
him knocking other kids off
or if you know if I haven't prepped the car
you know I've actually really enjoyed like working on the go-kart
you know getting it prepped
and but then it's kind of on the situation
like you know gosh you know the
tire's probably gonna fall off or I'm gonna leave something loose
but you know fingers crossed it's been good
so far but no you're right
man it's so cool to go
back to a go-kart track you know as I
did when I was you know seven years old with my
mom and dad and my siblings and
you know just hanging out you know talking
watching other racing you know the kids
really having a fun time
throughout has been
has been really really cool to see
that's bad for your job book though
that's the worst part
I'm okay
at the minute so I haven't
we brought
Jay Howard's son's car
from like five years ago we were kind of
you know just keeping it pretty
pretty chill at the moment but I think
you can see it ramp up really really fast
it ramps up really fast
I can vouch for that that's for sure
I need to be calling you
and getting some tips man you've definitely rolled through it
at the perfect time I think to help me out here
Scott I've got a couple of quick ones
what car number
are you gonna be taking next year
will it be the six because you are
a six time champion and
from a marketing perspective you could just flip
the nine upside down and it makes a six
will it be the seven because you're going
for your seventh title
or did none of those things really matter and you're just going to take
whichever number McLaren give you
yeah that's it I really don't know
I think I had to ask
the other day because they'd sent something about
you know logos and that
mine is kind of always incorporated
you know ST9 so
maybe triple or I'll maybe take the number
no it's nothing
yeah I have no idea
it's a short answer to that
six or seven right one of those
one of those did you
manage to get yourself a McLaren
did Steph and Johansson as your manager
managed to get you a McLaren road car
as part of the contract and if so which one
have you requested
I haven't
I'm not a massive car guy
in general
I think it was offered
so we'll see how that plays out
but
yeah I don't know what's the new one
the W1 right which I'm sure that's not even a possibility
you know
you're a fairly big name signing Scott
I think you can have whatever you want to be completely fair
I want to be
pretty sure on that stuff man
it's
we'll see how it plays out
but nothing was
promised or that was never part of the deal
but I think Zach has mentioned something like that
then on the flip side to that
Zach has an incredible array
of historic cars
which his drivers get to go out
and drive and he has these wonderful days
where they go and take circuits
and go and race them
which one of his cars are you most
looking forward to
asking him permission to jump into
like is it like the Senna McLaren or is it
you know what
that's a tough one because I think
there are a lot of them
the Senna McLaren obviously
is going to be a marquee
you know maybe
Mario's
GPS car
something like that would be really cool
even some of the NASCAR cars that he's got
would be pretty special
but he's done a few of those events
I know Dario I think has touched
years ago on doing some of those
with him
obviously a little more classic is
an R&M Rashal Mill event
which I'd love to maybe see if that works out
you know down the road as well
but no I think he's got so many
it would be a lot of fun
and even I think some of the Jaguar sports cars
and yeah there's a ton
Will you be doing
any F1 sessions
will you be a rookie
has that been
discussed because we know
Pato doesn't want to do that anymore
would you go and jump in and do a Friday
sesh
I think they have a long list of guys
man before
I don't think I even cut the top 10 on that one
so I haven't even thought about that
that's a good point but no
I've not
thought about that one
and the final one of my quick ones
are you going to steal Dario
and take him with you
I don't know
Dario is his own man
as we know
and he makes that pretty
prominent
yeah I had no idea
like I don't know what Dario is up to
I know it's difficult for him
obviously he's split between doing a lot of the Gordon Murray
activities and obviously that's
ramping up too into a totally different
craze
he's been doing a lot of vintage stuff as well
I'll be joining him again this year for the Goodwood Revival
which is going to be a lot of fun
I think
I don't know who else is coming this year
there will be a lot of Santee Cavers there last year
but no Dario
made
one he's got those Scottish arms
so he never wants to pay for anything
he keeps everything
very tight to his chest
so I'll probably be like
the fifth person to find out
if he decides to do something
but no he's got a great relationship with Chip and the team
as do I
and I don't know if any of that would change
when you go back you mentioned Chip right there
if there's one moment
that you could pull out of the run
that you had Chip Ganassi
at Chip Ganassi Racing
what would you say is your favorite moment
that you got to experience
with Chip and the success that you guys had
it's tough there's so many
you know I think the first one
I remember sitting on a couch
here in Indianapolis
very hungover on a Monday
after Homestead
the first win in 0-3
we went on to win that championship
and Chip called me and he's like
oh man that was a really big deal
we just switched from
Kart to the IRL
and I don't think I really kind of knew
what we had done which was
very special but I'd say probably
the prized moment for me
was 15
where we kind of stole the championship from
Montoya and Chip was
crowd surfing I never thought
and Chip's like you got to get out there
you got to get out there and crowd surf
and I'm like dude like are you meant to do that
on your back like I don't think you meant to go
front ways and of course we just went
out front ways man it was
yeah yeah interesting
for a lot of people but no so many great moments
for Chip you know he's a hell of a guy
obviously you know oh so much
to him and you know his team
of people I am Michael but that made
it all possible and yeah
tough tough to leave man
but I wanted
to make sure that you know with Chip
when I went and sat down with him and kind of
went through the process of just like the biggest
thing for me is that we remain friends
and you know I never want to be in an awkward situation
where I walk down Pit Road and I can't you know
have a chat with you know so
hopefully hopefully that stays true and
Chip's been amazing so far so
it may get awkward though over
the next 77 races
given that you're leaving
and obviously certain things will have
to be held back and meetings which you would
have been invited into you're now not going to
be invited into and that's not
a harsh thing on yes just natural with
anybody leaving a team
how and it's so
unique to what we do and to motorsport
where these contracts are signed halfway
through a season and announced halfway through a season
not like soccer or the NFL where it's
all done in the off season
is that going to be
is that going to be strange to have to contend
with not being
a 100% part of the team
and knowing you're being left out of those things
because they already know you
you're on the way out
yeah like
you know is
it's part of part of it right like you
kind of knew it was going to come
but you've not done this in the in a quarter of a
century no but I've seen it you know there
are glimpses of that with with Palu
right when yeah well he was
coming and going for a little bit
and then
yeah like you know there's no simulation now
there's no you know nothing electronically
you know you can kind of read off a computer
but that's about it but yeah it's
yeah it's part and parcel of it you know obviously
I've seen it happen
with the team before with other drivers
it's something that I expected
you know it doesn't change much
maybe a little bit you know simulation
I think for a lot of the new circuits maybe
like Markham and things like that might be a little bit more
difficult but hey it is what it is man
just head down and
and honestly I think you know the
freshest portion of everything was you know
Mike was Mike and Shipper like hey
we're going to be doing everything we can
to win every race you know for the rest of the season
for you so that's no
different to me you know all I want to do
is win this weekend in Nashville
and and throughout the rest of the
season so I'm looking forward to
looking forward to getting back on track this weekend
man there's like an icon
vouch for what it is
to leave something that you've
you know something you've been a part of for 25
years and go and do something
different
and just the sudden
burst of energy that it gives
you and how young
it makes you feel and the opportunity
that it presents to just
flourish and and rediscover
the joy again
what are you most looking
looking forward to from this
this change of scenery
you know again I don't think it's
going to be one thing I think it's just going to
be a lot of different things you know whether it's dealing
with totally different people you know being
thrown into a totally different process
you know
seeing you know style of you know
what Pato how you know he interacts
with the team how the
team you know interacts with each other
Felix obviously I work closely with already
and have done in the past when he was at
CGR so that's a that's an easy one
but yeah I think it's just
it's just a different challenge I think that's
what I'm most excited to because nothing
is going to be the same as is where I'm currently
at I don't think yeah
for anything left on the bucket list
like I know you're concentrating on the on the
IndyCar stuff is there anything like down
the road that you say I want to go race this
this or this is there
anything that you have I know you're
you're ultra focused on making the IndyCar stuff
go but is there anything on your bucket
list that you want to experience before you just
hang up the helmet and become a mechanic
definitely Lamar again
it's such an epic
race to to maybe
have a really good shot at that you know I think
the first year I went there and in 16
with Ford was you know obviously in GTLM
but you know the
CISCAR 1 you know we finished on the podium
I think we've you know
it'd be great to race there again
Beth there's 12 hour I really want to do again
you know I think maybe Nurburgring
at some point would be a lot
of fun but you know a lot of these things you know
especially when you're immersed so deeply into
what we currently do makes it makes it
quite difficult but
yeah I would say that's that's kind of
you know it at the minute
and it just so happens that Zach is launching
into hypercar
yeah that do
it just so happens that Zach is launching into
hypercar
the other one is maybe
you know they turn to 500 you know Jimmy
we talked quite a bit about that which would
which would be a lot of fun
but those guys are
you guys are so good at what you do
like it's so impressive to watch and obviously
chat with SVG occasionally
and just he's you know he's
you can see is making some serious progress
right now which is which is
pretty cool I think the road courses
I think you'd
I think you'd do fine
I think you'd come over and have a good time
and you just as SVG
has already kind of figured out you just got to run back into him
and Magnuson did the exact same thing
you just got to run back into him so
I enjoy when you guys
I love the crossover and when I
when I was a kid
and you saw the guys would run the
524 hours a day
and all the guys
going back and forth and you're starting to see
that more I enjoy
I'm a race fan now so I enjoy watching
that stuff
the Toyota racing series too
I think Felix is so in New Zealand
which I never got to win the
New Zealand Grand Prix
it was it was one that kind of
I think had a mechanical three times I did it
which was which was frustrating but
that apparently is on the radar too
for the SEAL which which could be kind of interesting
as well so we'll see
SVG won that a couple of years ago didn't he
I think during Covid
he rocked it man
dude he won from the pit lane
exactly it was seriously impressive
he's such a stud that guy man
like it's insane the talent
insane he's unreal
yeah and then you look at how much he struggles
or has been struggling you know on the
ovals and you realise what a difficult proposition
that is in in in carp it's crazy
Scott last
last one from me mate because we are running
out of time we could talk to you all day
Zach stated aim
is to win the Indianapolis 500
with you guys because he wants to win the
Triple Crown the first
thing that you mentioned in the interview today
is wanting to do with McLaren was to win the championship
which is more important to you
to win the championship
for a seventh time
or to win the Indy 500
well the easy answer is always both
but
the 500
good answer
that's a tough one man
the 500 for sure
done done
well
I think when you look at the Indy 500
and you look at the significance that it has
with
Indy car racing I don't think anybody would
blame me for that answer so
I appreciate that answer
yeah
as we would expect from you
Scott thank you so much for your time man
we appreciate it so much this has been
it's been a joy and it's been such a huge
piece of news
for the championship for the team
most importantly for you
and we're absolutely delighted for you mate
that it's come in your way
and that this new opportunity has presented itself
we cannot wait to see you racing
in a slightly different shade of orange
it's going to be awesome
and the biggest thing as you said
to be racing for Bruce McLaren's team
as a New Zealander
it's something so so special
and I know that's going to mean so much to you
thank you man thank you for your time
thanks for being on the show
and we can't wait to see you in Nashville this weekend
thank you guys I appreciate it as always
and look forward to seeing you soon
thanks buddy
