LIVE
Good morning Niagara. You're tuned to car connection where the coffee's hot, the
tools are ready, and the talk is always tuned up. I'm your host, Niall Motor
Mt. Jenkins, coming to you straight from the car connection workshop, where we
mix a little humor, a little know-how, and a whole lot of horsepower. Here it's
not just about fixing cars, it's about keeping you rolling and saving you money
and giving you the confidence to understand what's under that hood. From
the classics, to the commuters, the weird noises, to the what the heck moments,
we've got you covered. So grab your coffee, make sure it's firmly seated in
your cup holder if you're driving, pay attention, keep an eye on the other guy.
Join the crew this morning because this is car connection. Your Monday through
Saturday morning pit stop for stories, smarts, a few good laughs, and I'm Niall
Motor Mt. Jenkins and we're shifting into drive this morning right here in the
car connection workshop. So it's your first time to join us. We always have a
morning swiggy together, and I always remind you, check your beverage order
before you leave the drive-thru. Just say it. Just say it. And drive safe out
there. You know, it's that time of year. Road conditions are weird all over, so you
can be fine in one area, not so much in the other. So you know what? Adjust your
driving habits to suit the road conditions. All right? I don't want to hear
about anybody upside down in the rhubarb patch waiting for CAA and they
don't have enough cables to fetch you out of the farmers field. That's a bad
way to start off your week. So, hey, how's your, how's your Christmas shopping
coming? Started yet? Done? We don't talk to those people. Yeah. They get their
Christmas shopping done in like September or July. Any hoes, if you missed last
week's podcast, you'll have to back up the bus because they gave you a whole
program filled with ideas on what to buy for that car guy or automotive
technician on your Christmas gift-giving list. And there was some pretty cool
stuff on there. I'd put a check mark beside any of the items I was talking
about. Why? Because I am a car guy. I've been into cars since I was a kid. I
changed my first engine with my father in a freezing cold barn way out in what
used to be the boonies. Are you ready? Bimbrook. There were more holes in the
barn than there was doors. And it was freezing cold and it was like a really
old 60-something mercury pickup truck. That's all I can remember. And I
remember I got the job of painting out the engine bay with some black paint in
the freezing cold and I had more on me than I think in the engine bay of the
truck. But anyhow, those are some memories I remember out in some barn. Some fellow
that worked with my pop said, oh, you can use my barn. We might have all been
outside because the outside was inside and it was snowing. Well, anyways, we
always raise a cup together. So joining us for the first time, always have some
crayons and a brown paper bag to give to whoever's riding shotgun in your car to
take notes for you. That's right. Crayons, doesn't matter if it's cold or hot,
they still write. If you break it, peel the paper back, keep going. So take down
some notes. But whatever your morning beverage is, raise your cup, keep your
eye on the road if you're driving. And we count it down three, two, one. We have a
swiggy together. I'm still battling this winter cold, but I think I'm finally
cruising out the back door of it. And I don't have coffee. I have my herbal tea
remedy. Yeah. Has cinnamon, ginger, something else, plus that, and honey. Yeah. So on three,
two, one. Ready? Three, two, one.
Oh, that is, it is not bad, you know, it's not bad, but it ain't coffee. I'm telling you,
it's just, it's not, it's not a substitute.
All right, it can taste the honey in there. It tastes the cinnamon pretty good. It's
cylon cinnamon. It's supposed to be the best. All right, let's move on before I digress this
morning into a story. We don't want to do that right away out of the gate, but I do have
another car, another motormouth winter tech tip. We are on motormouth winter tech tip number
31. I kid you not, you guys have really been chewing them up out there. All right, here it is.
Get your crayon ready. Keep washer nozzles clear. A pin or a safety needle unclogs them
unless you enjoy winter driving with a salty film filter. Yeah. You know, where the windshield's
like covered in this white substance and you can't get it off, but if you keep turning the wipers
on, it just makes the smear a whole lot worse. Like putting a, like melting a marshmallow and
smearing it all over your windshield. And then it freezes. That would suck with a K plus a T on
the end. Yeah. So a pin and a needle. I'm not too keen on that. If you get it, get the nozzles
plugged. You don't want to get Rami with that and, you know, like get a hammer and start tapping the
needle into the little nozzle because then it's not going to spray. It's just going to kind of
against the glass and you've ruined the nozzle. Here's what I recommend. Most of all, I have had
to use the pin method, but you really got to be careful. You can't get Rami or you'll be ordering
some squirter nozzles and some of them are not friendly to replace depends on where they're
located. I highly recommend and put this on your got to get list. Buy yourself a two or three liter
jug of de-icer. That's what it is. I have it on my shelf and I make sure I have some every single
winter. Then what I do with that because it's in bulk is go to the dollar store, get yourself a
decent spray bottle and you pour that product in there, but here's what I highly recommend
because the de-icer is alcohol and when alcohol burns you can't see it, but you'll know when your
pants are on fire and it happened to a fella I worked with. His trouble light broke. He was pouring
some de-icer into an air brake system on a truck and what happened was it's built. It must have
been running down his coveralls pant leg and his some dripped on his service light and the bulb
popped and he didn't know his pant leg was on fire. He got third degree burns. Had to leave the shop
and yeah it was it was crazy. It was skin grafts. It was unreal. He's jumping around the shop and
if we had you know if the shop was dark we would have seen the blue flames, but you don't see it.
That's the problem. So I say all that to be safe and be protective of that bottle. Don't leave it
around where kids can get it and clearly mark that bottle with a heavy duty Sharpie lock de-icer.
So I keep that and when it ice rains then the windshield and all the side glass is all marbled
over. I get into the driver's door first get the vehicle started and then I'll spray that at the
top of the windshield and let it run down and same with the side glass and the rear glass then you
know what it comes off easy peasy lemon squeezy with your end of your snow brush the scraper end.
You're not trying to chisel out the glass so what you also can do talking about the windshield
squirters is just aim right at it take it off of spray and put it on stream and just you just
need to nail a little bit into the end of each one of those squirters and it completely cleans
them off you'll be all right so but if you're the fella or fella that said I'm just going to leave
my summer washer fluid in there and now everything's freezing up and your windshield washer jug is
like half set jello pudding you got trubs the only way you're going to fix that is get it to the shop
or get it into a warm building let it sit overnight and draw out that minus 30 minus 35 minus 40
windshield washer fluid and put it into a don't throw it out it's still good but just not for this
season mark the jug what temperature it is you know if you're not sure just put it's minus 30 to
minus 40 it's summer washer fluid get your minus 45 minus 50 in there and then purge the lines
in a way you go because a lot of people have been caught and the reason being is the grocery stores
even some of the pharmaceutical companies have had middle mid aisle specials on washer fluid
and it's I've looked at it it's all been either minus 30 or minus 35 that's summer washer fluid
that is not going to save your butt out on the highway when there's a lot of road splash

we're winding down an old year let's help those people that need a hand up not a hand out
to break free from any addiction and there's lots of it going on out there and let's help
to set them free all right let's jump into our topic today it's a hot one it really is
yep you're ready for it here it is fix it but that's right fix it but
and i'll finish the sentence fix it but don't spend any money you know we had our shop on
the hamilton mountain from about uh what year was that now it's back so far heat gas man
that's rough 1992 i think we started in 91 yeah we did we started in 1991
and uh closed the doors because of my health condition i blew my back out extremely bad
lifting carpet people asked me oh lifting a car did something fall on you know i was lifting carpet
that was dropped off for me right in the middle of one of our service bays at the end of the day
and i popped two discs out and it was uh that was a rude thing man i wouldn't wish that on my worst
enemy that is for sure so anyways that changed the direction of things for me for a few years
to get my health back but anyways i would get people saying that all the time now you gotta fix
it but don't spend any money and one of these days i will write a book uh that covers all those
details yeah fix it but don't make don't spend any money well it's almost true and that's what
i wanted to share with you today is i i've been really plugging away on helping you to change
that mindset on spending money on your car doesn't mean you have to empty the bank account but what
it does mean is if you if you're like me i drive older vehicles i i'm done with the paying interest
thing being in being in business in partnership with the banks i'm done with that you know i i
could tell you right now i still own a vehicle i bought when i was age 22 and i had to have this
truck how many of you out there yeah i had to have it no matter what it was going to cost you
you know three quarters or 90 percent of your monthly earnings yeah i had to have it well that's
hand up busted i had to have this this uh specialty pickup truck from toyota and the
first one came out in 1982 was called the mirage and they only made 500 and i missed it it was
for sale in st catharines every dealer depending on how big a dealer you were you only got maybe one
or two of them that's it and the four-wheel drive version that was the uh canada was the only
toyota dealers that got the four-wheel drive version of the mirage and uh the american side
only got long box two-wheel drive so i missed the mirage in 1982 but that even made the burn
to get one of these little uh special edition limited edition trucks and the next year my
friend that worked at toyota in stony creek centennial parkway he said dial he says they're
coming out with another one 1983 i go yeah yeah it's called the mojave so my nickname mine is moe
yes i bought it and did i ever pay now if i had a bini i found one uh for sale in london and i bought
it and uh got on the bus with my license plates headed up to london and bought this vehicle from
a fella up there i can still remember his name because i don't think i'll ever forget it it was
quite an experience and we pulled it off which was very unique and so the moe which is what i call
i'm short from lojave mojave is number 222 out of 500 but here's the here's the thing i had to have it
and i got it at 17.5 interest it's some of you listening ago that's a load of crap no no because
my mortgage at the time was uh like 13 14 percent back in the early 80s interest rates were bizarro
nothing like anybody's seen these days it's it fits at six percent everybody's screaming now imagine
i'm 22 i'm still an apprentice i'm working in downtown hamilton on my apprenticeship
and i'm working on john street south and i'm paying 17 almost 18 percent interest on that little
truck okay i don't normally talk numbers but here's what you gotta know and it all ties in so stay with
me 1983 short box toyota 4x4 pickup called a mojave number 222 out of 500 if i could have bought that
cash the day that i purchased it was 11 200 he bought the truck for his wife and then
that was determined she couldn't drive a stick to save her skin so he bought her something else
and Chevy products i think he bought her a blazer so anyhow so i'm paying now 17.93 percent
on 11 200 yeah by the time i paid it off and i had to refi at once because we weren't done yet
and the the loan was matured i paid double that i paid over 22 thousand dollars
because of interest to get that vehicle but i had to have it yeah so i still have it today
and it's all it's it's all original all the mechanicals were all done we actually worked on
that truck uh two winters ago went through all the mechanicals and he's tucked away for the winter
and the reason i really believe the reason why i can't let go of it is i paid 22 thousand dollars
for that truck and i i did i did really really really really take care of it but that's a lot of
money back then in 1983 22 grand was a lot of money so that's when i would hear people saying
well fix it and don't spend any money well here's the thing today's world interest rates plus the
price of vehicles just go you know if you think your jalapeno worth spending some money on go take
a look at some sticker prices and then figure out if you got to put say four grand into your vehicle
to get everything up to snuff one time and then now change your mindset to do preventative maintenance
not maintenance when the car forces you on the back of a flatbed or the side of the road waiting
for for roadside assistance but keeping the maintenance up spending a little bit a little
bit a little bit and a little bit and a little bit prevents that massive repair order for like i'm
using the number four grand you know why it takes nothing to spend four grand on a car these days
nothing at all you're at 3800 i'm seeing bills 3500 just one recent eight thousand dollars
so hmm the oldest vehicle i drive is a 1999 honda civic two-door hatchback five-gear air one owner
and an 07 toy on fj cruiser it's heading for 400 000 k and how do i do it i'll spend a little bit
of money a little bit of money a little bit of money a little bit of money a little bit of money
making sure you don't get behind on the maintenance so saying fix it but don't spend any money go and
see how many payments monthly payments it would take to equal four grand on something today
off the line go and see what you can buy for say 35 grand it's going to be used
can tell you that it's going to have mileage can tell you that and it's going to need maintenance
anyway so as long as the structural integrity of the vehicle is good that means you know your
butt's not hanging out and dragging on the black top and you're driving where the seat's falling
through the floor then you've got something worth saving it's money in the bank trust me because
when you turn the key you're not in business in partnership with the bank so don't look at what
it's worth curbside forget that see dealers today they don't want you to service your vehicle they
don't want you spending a little bit of money little bit of money little bit of money little
bit of money keeping the maintenance up they're not pushing maintenance because they want to sell
more cars so they want you out of a vehicle within five years the preference within two to three
you're turning it in because they have clients waiting for a pre-owned the pre-owned car market
is a hot market because there's not enough inventory for those who can't afford to buy a brand
new car but what are you going to get for 20 grand something with decent mileage on it's going to be
high mileage what are you going to get for 15 something that's approaching 300 or well over 200
it's going to need money spending on it so take a hard look at that jalopy you're driving if it's
paid for and go it ain't so bad and don't get the mindset well you know the the repairs are worth
more than it's worth no you can't look at it that way go to the car lots and look at the prices
and then you'll see how much more time for money you've got to trade to pay for it extra financial
pressure so what are you going to go without in order to make the car payment hey maybe you're
blessed you're one of those that has money dripping out of every pocket of your pants
i'm the guy following you just so you know with a dustpan and a rubber made bucket yeah
fill her up most or it's it's hand to mouth there's more month than money so how do you win
this is what i'm telling you fix it but don't spend any money no no no fix it get it into the shop
before it's broken stay up with the fluid changes and the oil changes don't push the thing don't
drive it like you stole it baby it and make it go the distance like me 400 approaching 400k
i don't drive it like i stole it i'm not in the bush off-roading and mudding it because that
you play hard you pay hard that's how it works you know i don't have more money than brains
i'm just like you put my pants and my socks on backwards every single day yeah and you know
i gotta look after my vehicles even though i can put the labor in and fix it myself i
still gotta buy parts there's still expense no matter what there's still expense so that vehicle
in the driveway that you think is worth nothing as long as it's not rotted out and nothing major
is going wrong like you got a blown motor and the transmission slipping then that is a honey
sickle baby you need to keep it going treat it with kit gloves keep it clean wash it respect it
and fix anything right from the smallest problem to the biggest problem stay ahead of the curve
because when you turn that key you own it you own it and i love that feeling
i'm done with paying interest and making car payments you know i finally got that out of my
mind and when i look at mole the mole hobby i i think immediately how hard i worked as a second
year apprentice to pay for that truck i worked my living high knee off
and for what i could have paid and taken it home for eleven thousand two hundred dollars
cost me well over twenty two thousand dollars and most of that interest very little principle
so don't get caught up in that fix it but don't spend any money it's an old jalopy you know some
of my best vehicles have been five hundred dollar beauties i take it apart i clean it inside clear
out the pig pen dress it up not putting lipstick on a pig you go through it do all the mechanicals
pop out the other side for less than a couple of grand i got a vehicle to go the next five to
ten years if i want keep the rust proofing up so the body doesn't go you got yourself a creme
de la creme big time so don't look at that old car like it's a pile of scrap piece of junk
it's paid for it's not rotted out put the money into it keep it going in this economy the best
advice i can give you as a technician is keep that sucker going as long as you possibly can
because as you would hear from tony mealy or larry titrell my certified financial planning
professionals they would look you in the eye right now in an hour in a coffee and say best
vehicle in the driveway is the one that's bought and paid for right now now is not the time to
take on debt now's the time to hunker down count your pennies what's not really you know there's
wishes there's wants and there's needs and there's gots and everything falls into one of those categories
that's simple there's wishes there's wants there's needs and there's gots and my little truck was
a got back when i was 22 years old and i'll tell you would i do that again would i put all the hours
in that i had to put in to make the payment and most of the payment was interest not principal
never i would never in my life at my age right now think of doing that is getting in over my head
to drive you know here's what we do is people we buy things to impress people we don't even know
and we don't even like amen it is so true been there myself i'm not a big shot i live a very
humble life i don't need the next shiny thing i don't you know i don't need another thing this time
of year somebody asked me what would you like for christmas i go i don't know you know if there's
something i really need and it's not a want it's a need it's a necessity i go get it if it's in the
budget i go get it if i don't well i gotta do without it for now so i hope that's kind of helped you
with your mindset take a deeper look at the vehicles you have in the driveway
and instead of thinking yeah that's getting old i don't i'm not going to spend any more money on
it anymore well then go and take a look at the reality of what it's going to cost to get something
else that doesn't have mileage on it that's not going to need maintenance good luck you're going
to keep the mileage low enough to take advantage of the manufacturer's warranty whatever it may be
four years 60 000 k i've always said if that's all you can warranty your crap for i don't need it in
my driveway because it's junk on rubber exactly if that's all you can give me if that's all you can
say you can back up your product to say four years 60 000 kilometers whichever comes first i don't

About this episode
Exploring the philosophy of maintaining older vehicles, this episode emphasizes the importance of fixing what you already own instead of financing new cars. Host Niall Motor Mt. Jenkins shares personal stories and practical tips on preventative maintenance, highlighting the financial burden of car loans and the value of keeping older cars in good condition. With humor and relatable anecdotes, he encourages listeners to rethink their approach to car ownership, advocating for a mindset that prioritizes maintenance over unnecessary spending.
Fix it BUT don't spend any money, words I would hear quite often a repair shop owner, one day I will write that book from a service tech's perspective, till then listen up friends... In this episode of the Car Connection Workshop Podcast, we're talking about something most people overlook: the MOST reliable and most affordable vehicle in your driveway is the one that's already paid for. Before you give your old jalopy the stink-eye and send it to the crusher, take a second look:
1) no payments
2)no interest
3)body is solid
4)engine and transmission still strong
Instead of replacing it, invest a little time and a little maintenance-regular oil changes, fluids, brakes, belts, and small repairs to stay ahead of problems and save yourself THOUSANDS compared to buying "new to you" Today's car loans run 6-7 years with wild interest rates. Even a $4,000 repair is cheaper than years of payments. why not treat your older ride like a brand -new one and keep more of your money right where it belongs-IN YOUR POCKET? If you're trying to get through today's economy without drowning in payments, THIS is the episode you can't miss. "Fix it, don't finance it. the smartest investment you can make today is the vehicle already parked in your driveway." "Tomorrow morning I'm in the shop shooting THREE new YouTube videos, so make sure you're subscribed across every platform. Big things coming!"
