Let's Talk Carsradio dot com. Now here's the host of Let's Talk Cars Radio,
Dave Polage. Saturday America. You're listening to Freedom Radio. I'm once
again Big Dap hang out with Camra Chaos NVB. We're having it's funny.
So we start of the show and I got this stuff stuck in my head.
It's funny, upsidiered like thinking about things, and then I realized the camera comes on, like hey, so camera shy. No, definitely not
camera shy. Hey. So here's the thing, guys, I want to
start off with something completely like different today. So I know this has happened
to everybody, especially us car guys. So like I said, I know
people listen to the show for a lot of different reasons. There's a lot
of car guys listen to show shop owners, people who just want to learn how to work on their cars or get car information or anything that's updated on technology, whatever. So everybody listens for any reason, right, we would
agree upon that this one's a little different. Right, So I want to
get your guys' opinion on this, and I'm sure it has happened to you guys, at least it happens to me a lot. Right. Have you
ever got stuck in a conversation with somebody about their car and you just have to sit there and nod like yeah, and that's what you find yourself just uh huh, really much dig into the problem. But I always don't lie
when they're like, na, that's not that, it's not that and you're like okay, Or when somebody thinks they're smarter than you, like, all right, I'm not the smartest of everybody, but if I like know something more than you and you're like, no, it can't be that. There's
the first type of guy, right, the guy that like the guy that wants advice, right, like called like it wants your advice, so you give them the advice and then they'll tell you a bunch of reasons why that's not it. They're like, oh, that's not it, that can't that's
not what it is. It drives me nuts. But there's the second type
of guy who I'm going to say, I don't know, Like I don't know that guy right right, And he starts to talk about his car, and I'm intentatively listening because I'm a car guy. But then I realize that
some of the things I maybe the people that start those conversations with you don't realize just how much of a car fanatic nut that I am. And then
when I realized that the things we're talking about become just like not true, that makes it like I get stuck in conversations with people about cars, and like they start telling me stories about correct little things, and you don't want to be like too much to Most of them test the water first. I
find that, like when people are telling cars like the car story, like they test they test the water just to see how knowledgeable maybe I am on on the subject. And if I don't engage and or say anything, right
and I just go now I listen, some of them interpret that as that I don't have any knowledge on that subject, which is great because it keeps me a from sometimes getting a very long conversation and then that it's not gonna help out anyway. But I guess the biggest one I get into is the
horsepower conversation, where people are like, I got X amount of horsepower in my car, and I'm like, and I'm looking at the car. I
know what the engine has in it, and I'm like, no, you don't, but you can't say that, like you know, you're just stuck entertaining the conversation. And the longer you let the conversation go on, the
more fabricated the story gets about the car, Like I get, I get he has a gnaw spot or under the seat. Well I wish that was
the simplest part of it. But like, okay, so everybody lies about
horsepower numbers. We know that that's nothing new, but I get people that
give me like outrageous numbers, and I'm it's just not physically possible, like in the car, Like it's just it's not there's no way, Like I understand the capability of that particular motor. I ask you, oh, cool,
so what have you done to it? And I act stupid, you
know, and I'm just like, oh, so what have you done?
And it's got like stock internals, you know what I mean. It's got
some bolt on parts and they're thrown out like it's got horsepower, you know what I mean. I'm like, and I'm hoping my face doesn't make like
like any weird face. Why they're telling me that, because in my head,
I'm I'm kind of going like, I know you you know so, but you know, it's like it have I get in all of these conversations or somebody will tell me about it reprol You'll call me about a repair, like oh, I'm trying to do this repair and and I think it's this and that, and I'm like, okay, so bring it down for me.
Tell me why you think it's these problems, right, And then they start going any thing. I'm like, well, I don't think that doesn't
really control that, Yeah, but it does because it's one time. And
I'm like, and they the one time story never makes sense. We camp,
yeah, and we go down this long like rabbit hole and I'm like, wait, do what now? I think you have more than one problem?
Right? Can you back up and just slow down a minute and back
up for a minute and tell me you have to start questioning. You have
to start question I set them out halfway through this conversation something you know, this happened to you, So that's exactly what happens to me. And like
I first of all, you guys show me say a bunch of different times.
I hate when somebody calls me to ask your advice. I give an
advice, they do the complete opposite and then somehow ends up being my fault.
You guys have heard me say that many times. You got to hear
about it, right, I got to hear about why. And it sounds
like they may not tell you it's my fault, but they're saying it's my fault. Like I'm like, so did you try x Y or the Z?
Well, no, I didn't do that. I went ahead and did
this. And I'm thinking, and okay, so the car's not fixed still,
but you didn't try any of the ideas that I told you of what to look at. You went a completely different director. Well, I talked
to Tony and Tony told me, and I'm like, yeah, but did you call Towny before me or after me? I'm like that word. Do
I get the call where it's like, hey, I'm like trying to get my brakes fixed. I hear a noise, you know, and and it's
coming from the rear. You're like okay, okay, yeah, but the
engine's gone. What happened to the engine? And like why did we even
touch that? And you know, right, like yeah right, why did
you put your hand on the engine? You called me about brakes? Why
do you have the intake off? Like I don't. These are real,
real problems that happened to me, guys. I'm sure they got to happen
to you guys too. Were it just trying to find the noise? Is
right? Right? I was. I was searching for a noise. Well,
even Cam did to me. Cameron, he didn't. We worked on
Cameron's car, and I think I told you guys the story before camera comes back in the driveway and it's like I'm hearing something's wrong, like something's wrong with my brakes. What's you to my car? Now? Of course I
didn't. I worked on it, but I didn't work on it. I
kind of supervised Cameron working on it, so I guess that qualifies as me working on it and I'm like, as soon as he told me, what did I do? I pinpoint exactly what it was. I said, I
know exactly what the problem is. Take tire back off, loosen up the
caliber. I think you had everything too tight. Just loosening everything up and
the hand tighten. As soon as he did, the car ran fight.
But Cameron was one of those guys, so I'm like this, He's like, that's not going to be it. I'm like, trust me what you're
describing, that's going to be it. And Camera was instantly like, there's
no way, that's no way. I'm like, just we just do what
I tell you to do. Just and literally came smoke Cameron, Cameron way
and got the jack jacked. I didn't even put it back on the rack.
Jack did up right there with a jack, popped the tire off, backed everything off, hand, tighten everything down, took it for a drive and it was fine. But Camera's like, I would have never thought of
that. I'm like, why do you why do you come here? I
mean smoked just a little bit more times after that, so there might be something you still did wrong that that's still Here's the thing. I didn't even
do it. I didn't even do it. That particular tire was the camp
and it brings was the ones I had Cameron put on and tightened down.
I didn't even do that side of the car. That's how I knew.
I was like. I was like, I didn't. I didn't even touch
this side of the car. That was the side you did. Cameron.
He's like is it? Like, yes, yes it is. And I
knew it, Like I said, not that it takes a brain genis to figure that out. But if you don't work on cars all the time,
you didn't realize that I might know what that was right exactly. So it's
just it's one of those things of this happens to me a lot. I
get people all the time that will ask me for advice and I'm like, okay, well I think maybe I would try this. Now I only be
wrong, guys, I could be completely wrong, and it's okay to be wrong. But you did call because you ran out of you exhausted ideas.
Right, that's what guys just ideas that have no idea but are absolutely right.
You get. They're no car guys. They're not car guys, and
they're just like research for like maybe there's a ham sandwich stuck somewhere underneath the dash. No. No, I'm talking about like like they suggest like a
real part and they're actually correct, but they're like, they don't work on cars. You ever get the guys like that, don't I did where they
took a lucky guess and got right, and then all of a sudden they're like the most knowledgeable car guy. I'm lucky, but like you know,
did their research real quick. And here's the thing. Okay, I'm a
fan but not a fan. Just so you guys understand, I am a
fan but not a fan of YouTube. And I'm gonna tell you why YouTube's
going down. Oh wait, wait wait, no, YouTube. I love
you, guys. I love you when it comes to repairing cars. That's
what I mean. I've watched YouTube videos all day long. It don't bother
me. But I'm just saying that. I find myself many times where I'm
like I can't figure it out. Like I know, I kind of know
what the problem is, but I don't know exactly what the problem is.
And I go I type the problem to YouTube just to see if somebody else has ran across the problem. Now there's tons of websites that you can do.
There's just form sites, you guys. Know. I tell you I
use form sits all the time and I find answers on there all the time.
But a lot of times people are getting smart and they're making videos on it, and I will literally type in the exact problem I'm having that I can't find, and some guys uploaded a video they had the exact same problem I had and just saves me time. That has helped me. I told
you, guys, so I have the one where they are, but usually the break line I told you about. Remember some of their before you get
into Some of their videos are good, but a lot of their videos are like the boats located here and takes the camera videographers see anywhere where the boat hole is, They're like, take that boat out? What bolt I get
it, but I'm not talking about it. If you type in a problem,
if you type it, sometimes you type in the exact problem and there it is. It has helped me quite a few times. So, like
I said, I'm a fan of it. I'm also not a fan of
it because sometimes, like you say, it will lead people down a hole and it's a deep, deep hole that they can't get themselves out of right.
So well, just like the one time where I took the sway off of the car, and I'd even take the sway bar off my car, and I thought you had to write, well, that's because the video told me. I was just following dress the video. It's okay, I following
he's like the last guy that did this, that he took that part off.
No, well, people, what I think about it is like when they do like present preventive and maintenance and stuff, you know, something else might fail. Okay, so the call for that. No, what people
don't realize is and this is where people get themselves into serious problems working on when they're working on their own cars. Okay, that aren't is you got
to take nine things off to get to what you want. In the process,
you break six of those nine things trying to get to what you're actually trying to get the video out there that you really really need, and it gets you all the way to the end and it's like, all right, well this is where I lost tracks. Look up the next video pieces.
I had one this years ago. I had one that was very similar to
that. It was the guy was working on something that I was working on.
He said he had found the issue. So I am following along with
him on the video in my garage because I'd never messed with anything like that, and I can't. I can't know every single car. It's impossible,
guys. So I'm watching the video and I get probably fast forwarding. Keep
in mind because he was fast waring too, but fast forward through the video.
I get about four hours deep into it, and the guy goes, all right, and that's where we're gonna leave today. Catch us on the
next episode of And he had like a little there was no next episode two years ago. I had, yeah, whether anything it was, it was
too exactly. It's like two three years ago. And he never came back,
never showed how to finish it. And I'm like, guy, like,
tap of my phone, where are you? Where's the one? Where's
the episode? Got a way better one? And I know people have done
this too. You're watching the video. He gets right to the part you
need. He's like, and this is gonna take about an hour to two
hours, so I'll come right back to you. It's done. That has
I've gotten a lot of smarter. I've got a whole lot smarter. Fast
forward and I go through everything. I'm just looking at everything because like I've
had that happened many times. He's like, well, this is gonna take
me three hours, so I'm gona ahead fast forward to this part and I'll be right back. And then he forgets to record all the stuff you need
it and it's just he's a little to him stand in front of the car and go, okay, now I got this back together, and you're like, well wait, wait, like nineteen other steps that you didn't give me part after that you're like, cool, cool, But that's after what about right right now? Because that's everything shot out of which it's stuff shot out
order. I am trying to figure, Oh, I love here's the one
that happens to me all the time that it goes Hey, So as you guys can see, it's now back together. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn
the camera on. I thought I was recording. You're like wait, wait,
and then you can't find you can't find any other video to like walk you through that process now, and you already started following along. Well he's
okay, So I just recently had that happen because I was doing so I was doing a modification. We're working you guys, as you know, we're
working on the bad Am and I was doing a modification to it, and there was there's no instructions in a bunch of stuff that I bought. Not
that I need instructions, but you do. I'm making modifications right, and
the need there was absolutely no There was no like how to make the modification work on the car. So all three of us are literally looking up videos
and they are the even the ones that even address they're the worst videos ever.
They don't show you anything. Well, they're not your car too.
It's like, well it may not be exactly. I gotta take quick commercial
break. When we come back, I'll address this more because I tell you
it's it's just been a huge topic this week in many different instances the whole time. I'll be right back. You're listening to Dave on Let's Talk Cars

Welcome back to Let's Talk Cars Radio. You're automotive specialist. Now back to
your host Dave Polach. Hey, guys, welcome back. So before we
went to commercial break, we were talking about all the different things when people call you for advice and or the conversations. You guys just say, you
get stuck into with cars, right, But we were alluded on the fact when we were working on the bad Am there was some parts that we got and like I said, there's no instruction, not that there should be had to be instructures, but just to for things when you're modifying like parts onto a car, you had to do modifications to add the parts. Like okay,
So I think we told the story. We had a frame come over
to try to look for a bolt that was hiding. I did because I
was I could like there was certain things like they just didn't seem to add up. Now I did find out the reason why they didn't add up for
me. I think, as I told you, guys, I got,
we got, they sent me a bunch of wrong parts. Now they are
right as far as fitting somewhat not twice three times three times a charm.
Uh. Certain things lined up on it, so I was able to start
getting assembled, and then I got to a certain point when it's time to put another part on, and I'm like, why doesn't this part line upright?
This looks wrong, And of course there's no reference, Like you're frustrated because you know, like it should just go on a certain way. You're
like, okay, this would just go on there. This is just bolt
on and we are going on YouTube at that point and trying to search for somebody else that so happily has been You don't helpless, you feel you really do feel like right, like Nate said, they're not the same car, so you're kind of like trying to piece together, like, Okay, these spreams can go on, these types of things, so I'll give you right, I'll break it down to because I think we talked about it a little bit before. So we were having problems with spindles, new spindles for the
trans am. Now the first that I ordered ended up being h they fit
the trans AMD. They look different than what I have, but they look
similar bit differently. I think that's the easiest way to put similar bit different
to a certain gray. I look at it. I was like well maybe
they're just modified a little bit. And I'm pretty sure I tracked it down
like things just as if we started to put in everything together, Like the ball joints fit weird on it, but they fit, and I was like, okay, I've had ball joints fit strange before, so let's just move forward. So with then me before then it was time to start putting like
the Brake hardware kit on, and things didn't. They weren't lining up right,
and I'm like, why doesn't this line up right? So that was
so then I had to make a telephone call. By the way, as
you work on things on the weekend, nobody's open. No these you know,
suppliers are open on the weekend, so you have nobody to talk to say, right, that answers the phone by accident. But like I said,
you just you get stuck in those situations. And so we're on you
know, we're on YouTube, we're on forms, We're trying to find any information we can. And so I know this happens to other people, Like
I just know I'm not the only person gets stuck in that. And I
was talking to my friends and they're kind of laughing at me. Their car
guys, and they're like, what's pretty simple. I'm like, it is,
it is, It is simple if you had the right part. The
part looked like I said, similar but a little different. I'm pretty sure
that I got sent CE ten spindles for a C ten pickup truck for my trans am, which looked similar to but they weren't the same masteries why so that I had to take those off. So we took those off. They
supposed we sent me the next right spindles, right, So I put them on, and this time I was smart. I matched them up. I'm
like, okay, let me try to match them up with the old ones.
Now keep in mine. The design has changed a little bit from the
old design and new design, okay, and we're running tubular control arms, you know, all kinds of different stuff, right, But they look right, So we installed them because they looked right. Then it's time to go
put the break kit back on again. And I find out this one has
the right holes. But the break kit that they sent me is completely wrong.
But you don't know until you get deep into it anything basically right.
So I called them and I'm they're like, well, you can make it fit. I'm like, oh cool, just tell me how I'm game.
She's like, well, you're gonna need to go ahead and take a torch out and cut this off and then or or or the best way to do it is to take it to a machine shop and let them cut it and then let them drill it all out for you. And I'm thinking to myself,
this is a brand new part and now I got to take it and have somebody cut it drill it. This doesn't I mean, why buy this
part and then without missing a beat it was or we make one that you don't have to do any of that too, that we get send it to you. And I'm thinking to myself, what did I get the I did
that one from the get go, Like how did I not get that?
I just want to know what was going through your mind because when you text me, I could feel it when you were just like like, man, I gotta text him now, and he literally sends me a forward message and it goes, so what about taking it back off right? I'm like,
what do you mean? We just installed it for the second time. We're
not gonna be down. He's like, yeah, we got to take The
reason why is because if you know you just all spindles, you put the ball joints. The last thing you want to do is be taking balls apart
and back apart a million times, because you're gonna do what most likely mess up the ball joint boot and all that kind of stuff, because it's just there's just that pressed together. If everything's pressed together, the ball joint boot
lays right against the spindle on this one. And I just was like,
something's gonna ge messed up. Sure enough, it guys, it did.
I knew it. I knew it. But I sent a camera to text.
I was like, I got it. I got a plan. Here's
what we're gonna do. I'm gonna put it up on the rack. We're
gonnaut a jack underneath it. I'm gonna play the weight of the car down
and we're gonna do that and we'll be able to just slowly pop because you gotta remember the spring. Everything is all up inside the hole and you're trying
to get the spring not to fall out it because you have to lower the lower control arm down. There's there's just a lot of go into it.
So do you think the boot be a lot stronger, especially for I didn't say what they could build it a lot stronger. I knew, I just
knew that. I knew the boots were gonna get messed up. They're brand
new, and I was and and I was furious, But actually I wouldn't be in that position if they were right for the first and I didn't have to do them three different times, and they three times taking the ball joint back out, putting everything back together. And so here's the thing then,
which even drove me nuts, completely nuts, was I finally figure out, hey, I've got right, this now wrong that I finally start putting piece together. And keep in mind, there's no way for me. No,
it's not like there's instructions that tell me anything. Until you start putting it
together and you realize this just doesn't line up right. It looks right,
I mean, it's it's breaks, and it's calibers and it's you know, e rotors, and you're like, everything looks okay, But why isn't everything Why doesn't functions line up right? Probably don't help because i'm fireing safety over
here. I'm like fire safe, fire and safety, like in like commercial
world where I'm like, hey, that don't look right or that didn't sound right it was actually the common was that didn't sound right. Yeah, that
didn't sound right, and yeah, so I have to make sure they pause to make sure I take a look at it. And I'm like, a
green light, we can still go. So what's funny? Was even worse?
Okay, I know most of you probably hopefully we'll never have experience this, but there's people I know the listen to the show they've experienced this.
I had to bleed down on a jack. Why. I had to go
try to find a part. So I had my floor jack. Never had
problems with it before, Guys, I had my floor jacket. I had
it up undernath the suspension, holding the suspension in place because I'm trying to sneak all this stuff back apart again in the jack. Why we have our
back turned to it and we're looking at something else. I hear a pop
noise. I'm like, what was that? And I look and the jack
is starting to bleed down and it's letting the suspension fall out of the car.
That is holding the suspension on the car. Think about, we caught
it, but if you're worry about it, was is just a half hour before that we all ran to the store to go get apart and left that jack underneath holding that suspension in place, no care in the world, like oh, because we made the comment about it. We did make a comment
and we were like that would be okay, And we were like, yeah, that's a jack that we've used all the time. It was one of
our trustworthy jacks. So then we had to go grab the backup jack and
we were like, well we weren't really let me just let me just let you guys know, I will never do that again, like and maybe some and I know I'm gonna get some feedback from people. People are like,
oh, I've never done that. Look supported, It was the only way
to do it. I had everything supported the right way, and to take
it apart. It had to stay apart for me to fix the problem.
Every right press, so I had all the weight, we had the spring press and everything I had all set. I'm glad the jack didn't fail.
Why we're at the store, because it would have dropped down and everything would have sprung shot across the floor. Let's talk about something real quick too.
You know how many things we've created. I mean, we created a front
suspension hoist to hold the front suspension for us. Then we had to create
a tool to be able to get Yeah, we did, but hey, we wanted to part things off, and then you went and bought the tour.
You like, we're never going through that, okay. So I had
an old ball joint press and all that kind of stuff guys from like I probably hadn't used it in years, but I had one I could not put my hands on. I don't know where it went to. So we had
to take a sea clamp that I had gotten as a gift to you years ago for Christmas, and then turn it around and modify the sea clamp to fit in there to the right way to get it to work, to get everything to come apart, because I couldn't. It wouldn't cut their brand new
ball joints, guys, and it refused to come apart. I don't know
why. I just I was just we got done. I meant, the
ball joints aren't like regular ball draints. They're they're tampered, and they're extended,
and the way they fit in the whole, the way they the hole, it's it's there's a lot of it's just so then it's funny because I'm thinking about all my woes, right, and then I'm thinking about all these conversations I get stuck with people as they start telling me their car stories and ask me by advice. And I realized I'm one of those guys like I
have like you are. I'm like, I have the weirdest but like,
at least my story has factual to it, you know what I mean.
Like, I'm not less right, there's a lesson to be learned from it, right, And I'm like, but it's it's funny because every time I run into a problem, right, I'm not afraid to call out to somebody who I believe probably knows more than I do or experience this. So I
placed the telephone call. I'm like, hey, I know, I know
so and so has had to see this before. So I call them,
and you're hoping that they pick up the phone, right, and you're just now, Lately this week, I have been dealing with the guy that does pick up the phone and then comes to your house and messes everything up.
I mean completely, I have had a Like I've talked about this in forums, I've had people contacted. You're like, what would you do if you're
in this situation? And I'm like, well, I've never sell it.
I'm like, I've never I've never been in this situation where I've let somebody get me so deep into something that I couldn't undo it. But these conversations
that I that I've been in lately is that's exactly what it happens. I
wouldn't usually just let some random person work on my random I understand, or some person working my car, unless I think I could fix that if he messes up. You know, I could probably he's gonna mess up. You
don't, I don't. I don't test like if somebody comes over, like
there's some stuff like I've done this sketchy, like I'm okay, we can try this and hopefully it works out. But I've never let somebody put their
hands on something that was mine or something I was working on that maybe wasn't mine and go that's probably gonna mess it up. I'm gonna let him go
ahead and move forward, like that's kind of if. If that's the case,
saying that, that's my decision to make, like you like saying that.
But I'm I came to the point where I'm like, I don't feel comfortable. I wouldn't let him do it, but there's probably still a chance
he might mess it up too. All right, I gotta take another commercial
break when we come back. I got some stories going along with that,
and it came off. A lot of that came around this week and some
past stories. You hold tight. I'll be right back. You're listening to

Welcome back to Let's Talk Cars Radio, your automotive specialist. Now back to
your host, Dave Polach. Hey, guys, welcome back. So here's
the thing I wanted that I want to go into. So if you got
the listen to the show. We've been talking about all the different crazy things
of people telling you stories about their cars and then asking for advice to fix the cars, and how that all gets entailed in there. So I have
never had I was saying before Winter Commerce break, I have never like just willingly let somebody go to town on my vehicle without like it's gotta be my, my decision and your best interest. Like if I know, right,
if I know that there's a good chance that something's gonna get messed up, I'm taking it somewhere else. I'm either gonna take it to somebody and let
have some way I'm gonna do it right, or I'm gonna mess it up myself. Like I'm either take u somebody or I'm gonna take the chance and
try to get into part and hope I don't mess up like perfect example.
So we were just talking about it during a commercial break when we were messing with the ball joints and I couldn't get one of the ball joints to come out. I did what i'd normally have done in the old school, and
I screwed a bolt on top of it, screwed it down so it was nice and flat, and I'm like, I'm just gonna try to give it a whack. See if it pops loose, and I'm like, one or
two things are gonna happen. There's gonna come loose, So I'm gonna mess
up the thread, the thread on the nut because the nut's gonna get hit.
And I was like, it's probably gonna chape. So sure enough I
hit it. It didn't come loose, and I was like, okay,
I'm not gonna do that again. It didn't. It didn't do what I
thought it was gonna do. So as I go to take the nut off,
I know it. The nuts seemed like it came off harder than it
went on. I was like, I think it shifted threads on it.
Now I was able to chase the thread and fix it. But I just
that was my decision to make right. Like I wasn't. I didn't let
them do it, and I wasn't sure enough wouldn't let anybody else do it, because I was like, Okay, I can only be mad at myself if something messed up. Now it was not a big deal, but it
just extends the project. And I thirty minutes, you know, an hour
whenever the time is you're a local part store to go get it right.
So so I was like I was willing to take certain chance to work on it. So I realized how that works for other people when they're working on
cars. Now, all this week talking in forums and talking with people,
I ran into the other situation, right, But I just wanted to say one quick question. By the way, if you guys are ever looking for
a boat, We're not sponsored by them, but Taylor do it Center.
Go take a look at them, because apparently they have me and me and Pops was laughing. So I went to I went to two different part stores
looking for a bolt that I needed that they should easily have had, right, and they didn't have it. And as I was walking out the door.
Some guy goes, hey, check Taylor's. Believe it or not,
they got like a wide selection of automotive bolts there, and I was like, they do. He's like, I kid you not, they do.
So I'm thinking there's no way on God's green Earth that they're gonna have what I'm looking for. Similar, maybe something that could get me by I don't
know, but not what I'm looking for. We go there and they had
a whole specially aisle like Lowe's does and Home Depot does all I have right, this was this was different. They had stuff that they don't carry.
So I go to this and I look. I'm like, Karen, look
at it. Literally is automotive less automotive and everything. And I open up
the drawer and they're right, there is the bolt that I need that I would have never in a million years. Like we were in And the reason
why I brought that down this because we were in Awe. When we looked
over we found the boat. We look in and we're like, what oats
do they have? They had control arm bolts, I mean like and they're
labeled control. We're like, what type of priests? And I don't know.
Maybe because I live out maybe out in the country, so maybe they carry a wider brand of stuff because they have everything to do right, because you know, there's a lot of us out there that work on old you know it's farm equipment whatever, and you need stuff. But like they just
I was like, I said, Karen, look, look they got to they got a hub bolt in here for you. So I'm like, it's
listen. I'm like, why would they even have this, Like I don't
even understand why, Like I need hundreds, Like I know that if I went to any of the autopart stores, they weren't going to have that either, Like they wouldn't have they wouldn't have that, But here it is.
And I was just like, how we literally have this anytime we're looking for a boat. Now we're just coming straight here. I go straight there.
But I'm just gonna tell you, I may not go straight there, but I'm gonna say could probably be on my list. I was just shocked that
they had it. So it's like I said, they had what I needed
to save me, and I was able to continue to move forward. But
what happens so this week, like I said, as I was talking on forums and stuff, there's the everybody has one of those, Like I assume everybody has one of those friends that would love to come help you out of your situation. Maybe you don't have one, but everybody has one of those
to a certain degree. I don't. I probably don't have nearly as manays
I used to because everybody's busy and I lived out in the middle of nowhere.
Nobody really wants to drive out of here. But I get it.
But it's nice. And it's that guy that comes over and gets you into
like the BB the biggest mess on earth. Now he had great intentions.
I'm sure he had great intentions, but he comes over and he tries.
He's like, oh, I could do this for you, and you you want to have confidence in the fact that he can, because you've already been struggling for a while and you couldn't get it. And now he supposedly has
superior knowledge than you do. And then he just starts breaking things. And
what ends up happening when he breaks things, he's like, man, that broke and then you call a par store and you can't get it, and he's like, well, man, I hope it works out for you.
Good day work, you're right, good luck with getting that back together.
And then he's like a fairy, he disappears, and you're stuck. Man,
it's my best whatever you're stuck with the problem. I had talked to
more people this week that that has had to I talked with somebody who with a friend, they got probably six hours into a project on the car, six hours deep, and then just realized it's over their ahead, way over their head. And now six hours they got, yeah, six hours and
they got busted bolts apart, taking the transmission assembly apart, on the on the vehicle, taking like trying to go through everything. But they had to
on this particular they had to take a bunch of different stuff apart, and probably six hours for them because they don't do it regularly, probably couldn't get bolts loose. That's the reason why bolts were busted. Host you know,
Like I said, they're like, there's you know, and they're like, so now it's busted bolts, missing bolts because you know, I guess maybe you got upset and stuff went scattering across the shop floor, but you have missing bolts, busted bolts, and still after all that, you have now a pile of parts that you don't have the ability to put back together because you thought it was gonna be pretty simple, but you don't realize all the stuff that has to come off the vehicle to get to what you need to and that happens a lot. It's always easier to take off and put back
on. No, No, you're right, You're after right, it really
is. So does that sound familiar, Nathaniel, which part does the BMW?
I mean? Oh wait, wait, I won't say any product and
I started, I finished? You did? You finished your right the point
where the bolt was busted off the block, but you didn't finish it off.
You're right, and the bad part by it was aluminum block on top of that wrong bolt. Right, absolutely so. But this the conversations I
had this week. I've had a couple of different ones and I had I
had another one that I had and somebody came to help, and why they were helping. They busted something off and now it can't be fixed. Like
you got to try to see if you can go source that part right and see if they can be fixed. And like when I'm listening to people tell
me I'm listening to stories stuff like that, I'm in my head trying to figure out what's the quickest and easiest way to help them. But I know
that I'm just the next guy, right, So, like you've already been with somebody, somebody's already helped you, and now you call me, and I like, I generally want to help you fix everything, but someone was already there before me, and I don't know how bad it was before before I got there, Right, So it's like, how do you how do you help that? What's the one piece? I'm a car guy, I
promise, y'all. But to extent, what's the one piece? I want
to say? It goes like over a rocket arm or something, and it's
like a little bar that goes over. You have to put two screws in,
screw it into place, and it like clamps it down over top of rocking. You talk about the rocker, think it is. I broke one
of those boats on my z I remember my heart dropped. I was like
I'm done for but thankfully an extractor set just a little anything. So CAMRA's
extent, Cameron loves cars, but Cameron is there's only certain things Camera's gonna work on change, There's there's certain there's certain things doing it. The reason
why is because I've told him so many horror stories over the years. Like
I know people have best intentions, right, and this has happened. This
happened in our own garage. I've watched some of the kids that they're friends
with and stuff, like, I've watched and they like they bust things.
I'm like, how did you break that? Like it was the easiest repair.
Why why are we here? Like how did we get why didn't you
come get me? Like, for instance, if you all don't remember,
we had the conversation it was years ago where you know you have to take the nut off the roador to go ahead and get it. And like by
the time they came and got me, there was no slot left to put the screwdriver in to hit it and smack it. It was just they wore
it out. They wore the whole out. By time they got me,
it was like twelve thirty at night. No, it was later that I
was already in bed. It was like one thirty at night. We had
a drilled that one and they were in the garage still working on it.
I thought they lot the way we couldn't use We couldn't used just a regular electric like snap on drill. We had to break out one of Dad's like
gray set drills that plugged again. To be able to get enough, they
needed a hammer drill I need. I had to literally take a hammer drill
to it to get out because they had messed it up. So they had
tried. I'll give it to the credit. They had tried everything before they
ever came and got there. Sometimes I were replaced, except this one.
This was the one that was hold. Nope, you still had one left.
And I'll tell you the reason why. I remember, because I go
to the other one they did. One side of the car went good,
the other side the car was going yeah. I went to the back and
I'm like, and I look over there, and I'm like, who started working on this one? Like, well, I started. When I realized
it was doing the same as the first one, I just stopped so it still had a little left. I said, look, this is real easy,
and I went and I went and got the right told yeah, and I put it there and I smacked it and kind of you're like, oh, I wish I would have known if that's how you do that. I'm
like, I wish you would have known that's how you do that. Because
now I'm out here and I gotta go get a hammer drill to try to get a rotor off a car because you guys have messed everything up. But
there's that guy, right, there's that guy that like what the who stripped it out wasn't even the owner of the car. It was the friend trying
to help the owner of the car, who'd completely read it. And I'm
like, fun times, I'm like, why did you let him do this?
You're like at some point didn't it Like Domina, you, hey, you might want to stop now, Like these people out there, it's like, oh, they're not going to even see it, but you see it.
No, we're at the point like not only you see it, you couldn't the car was stuck in the state up. It couldn't be put back
together, and it couldn't be taken apart. Like it's like, what do
you do? So I know people get in that situation. Hold on,
guys, I can't believe. I keep on trying to finish it off,
and it's it seems to take it. Ever, let me go ahead and
take another crucial break. When I come back, we'll finish this episode off.

Transmission. Welcome back to Let's Talk Cars Radio. You're automotive specialist. Now
back to your host, Dave Polach. Hey, guys, welcome back.
So I told you we'd finish this off. So I guess it's hard.
Like there's so many stories right that people will email me or I get involved in him or personally people call me, or it's I get things text to me, and it always ends with like for me, they let somebody get involved, and then it's now bad, like you know, it's it's like it's gone. Like I said, I mean, you know, you got
when I talk to guys, take they taking the whole transmission apart, like you know, and now they're there it's over their head right and then or you know, another one I just dealt with. Actually, you know what,
I gotta I gotta go. Old man Fred called me. So he's
got a problem with his car. If you guys don't know who Old man
Fred is. Old man Friend's been listening to the show forever, it says
like the creation of it. So he actually called me and the other others.
He's a good listener in friend of ours, and he's got my phone number and he called me. He's like, hey, Dave, I got
a car problem question for you. And so I listened, and I'm like,
I'm pretty sure I know what's wrong with his car. And then I
gave the advice, even though I told you guys a lot of times, I'm kind of hesitant lately to give advice because I give advice and nobody follows it anyway, but right it was old Manfred, So I gave him some advice. What I believe it is. I think I think what he had
had, I'm gonna say had was a pretty simple problem to fix. I
think he's got an interlock problem somewhere. Rather it's going to be in the
shifter assembly or something like that. He's having a problem with the car shifting
into gear. But somebody took a hand to try to help him, and
it has gone from being I think probably what it would have been a simple fix, it is gonna be a little bit more complex fix because now something's broken on the car. And so it's funny because as I was talking to
him, the only thing I could think in my head was is we're having the conversation was this is what happens to so many people, because people generally want to help you, Like I truly, truly believe people have the best intentions in mind and they do want to help you. But this is how
things can go wrong. And then I started spinding. I got off the
phone with Fred and I started reflecting on it. The conversation him I just
had about the car, right, and I was like, this is what the general Now. I know Fred does because Fred knows cars, so he's
had a lot of cool cars. We've had a lot of conversations with him.
So he doesn't fall into this category. He doesn't fall he doesn't fall
into the category of this. But this is what happens to people where they
have a car problem, right, they bring it to the garage and then you have to move nineteen things to get to the problem. And people don't
realize that you can easily break something trying to get to the heart of the problem. Even us as text, they're so much to help that they're not
taking time to stop and think what could go long before you get I don't think it's a stop and think process. It's just like guys who do it
for a living, right, who work on cars and stuff like that.
You can look at a car and anticipate breaking seven different things before you actually get to what you're trying to get to. You can look at it and
go, man, that looks like it's worn out, Like you know I was. I was underneath the car recently and the rust amount of rust that
was on the car was pretty bad. Right, But customers don't understand that
portion of it. Like, let's say that you have to remove the exhaust
to get to the starter or whatever, because that's just what but the raw the exhaust is so rusty, you know, there's a good chance you're gonna bust the bolts trying to get the cross out, and how do you but how do you price that? Like, okay, the customer, do you
have to? But it's a very hard call. When before I was retired
and I dealt with it all the time, it's very hard to make a customer understand that. They're like, well, I brought to you for a
starter, and you're like, I understand that you brought to me a starter, but there's a bunch of things I need to move to get out of the way to get to that starter. Let's say I'm just using exhausted example
guys, and the exhausted and there's a good chance that the bolts are still rusted. I could try to heat them up and get them off. I
could try, I try everything else, but there's a good chance that I can get apart and then me as the garage, may not be able to get that exhaust to bolt back up. Even though I got the bolt out
and stuff like that, but it maybe once you get the bolt out and the whole would be so walled out no matter what new bolt you try to put in there, it won't pull the gain the tools to put it back together, even if you have like as a shop, we have all the tools, but you know, certain shots are like designated for certain things.
They don't have to, like say a welder to exhaust back. I think
almost every shop should. But I'm just saying, like for me, it's
you know, I'll look at it and go, there's a good chance once I get that nut off or that has that washer behind, I'm gonna find a big walled out hole that I could easily put a new bolt in.
But will that exhaust pull back together and not leak? And if it does,
then the customers like, well, didn't have an exhaust leak when you when I brought to you, and I brought to you first starter, Now I got an exhaust problem. They can't contemplate late a lot of that.
I and if a lot of people go all that stuff, trust me, you call a customer and tell them they need a twelve hundred dollars exhaust when they came in for a six hundred dollars starter on top of the starter.
It don't matter who it is, that's a non happy camper, And people go, I don't understand why I need an exhaust, Well, because it's rusted to all get out and I can't put it back together. Is a
very hard call. And that's what I feel like in people's home garages,
when people come to help and stuff like that, you get stuck this situation right, and you're trying to take things apart. You're just trying to help,
and then it breaks and you're stuck. You're just like the guys like,
well, good luck with that, you know what I mean? And
then what else do you do? Because you know that's happened to you,
chars, It's happened to me. I mean, I'm literally thinking about the
Coyo pac where when I literally had somebody work on my car. Now,
trust I mean, I give my time. You're the clip and I pulled
the cover off and there's a zip tie and I'm like, well, I didn't zip tie it here the thing time I missed a missfire and get a missfire because the clip, the way that on his cart goes together just it literally vibrates too much. That clip holds it so tight that you put the
way is shade trying to put the zip tie on it losing You're trying to pull it as tight as you can, but it's still not really as good sometimes as the actual clip was. And that one was getting a missfire.
Now the purpose free for like what a month or something like that before he started get the misfire. It served a purpose for about a month, but
obviously it must have shook a right. Nobody told me until I said,
you want to what missfire? And I asked for advice, and you're like,
well, try changing the coil PACs first, and then it's not that.
Then you know, when's the last time you did your spark plugs?
Spark plugs? But the only way to replace that clip was either replaced the
whole wiring harness or come up with my own idea because it's not in the instruction really, you know, well that's why he receives too, right, so you can kind of whittle down what the that problem could be there is so like there's a lot of times like back, like I said, before I was retired and we were doing with it all the time. You know,
I'd call a customer and go, look, I got to take X, Y and Z off. There's a good chance that if I take it
apart, I might not be able to get that back together because of the amount of where whatever it may be. And then I let them make the
educate decision for themselves what they want to do. But in your home garage,
when people are trying to help you, you don't have that Like if it breaks, you're just you're it's broke, and hopefully it's not your only car. And that's the problem that happens to a lot of people that is
their only car. Right so you hope you got all the tools and all
the parts you got right there. Here's the thing that I'm gonna tell you
right now, Okay, without a shadow of a doubt, there's no way in your home garage unless you are a technician who has retired, you know like that you're gonna have every single tool that you're ever gonna need the garage.
I can tell you still to this date working on cars with the with the boys gage when you start still buying tools because I'm like, you know, I know they now make something to help me with that, and I don't own it. I'm like, but I'm never going to be I never
want to be in this situation again. So I'm going to now buy that
tool so I'm never in that situation again. You want to what tool you've
now just made me think of? And I know I can't go put my
hand on it right now? What's that the bolt heat up gun that we
bought where you can slide over thee where that is hit the button. I
couldn't put my can't put my hand on that right now. Yeah, I
did own that, and I don't remember where that is. Just sorry,
Yeah, yeah, because he thought about us forever. I literally have not
used that in forever, So I don't even know where that is. It's
got to be out there somewhere. It's some one of the cases. We
work in the cars, y'all, and we lose stuff. So ten millimeters
sockets? Did you see the one guy he brought his car into the repair
shop and taped ten millimeter sockets and staid, I know what he did was no, he typed he take twenty dollars bill with no head. Here's here's
twenty here's twenty dollars. Because I used to work on cars, I know
working on cars is rough. Here's ten millimeters sockets he put like four minutes.
He's like, because I know you're going to probably lose at least one working on my car. And by the way, here's like a blunt.
Here's a pre roll on your day. He's like, so you can better
your day, so you can be your night, your day. I literally
saw that one today. Somebody said, this car is going to mess it
up for something. Somebody said, somebody said, has anybody been this nice
to you? Like, No, I did have a car where you know
how you think that somebody's trying to set you up right where somebody had put They had at least like an ounce of weed, like on the floorboard in the passenger side that was just there. I'm like, why didn't you take
that with you? Like why is that on the flight? Because they want
to excuse you, right, And I was just like when I saw weird things in cars, like left behind in cars, I'm like, uh, someone trying to mess with me, you know, I mean like I got in cars. I got in a car one time the guy had like a
bunch of money, like rubber band. It was right there by the ship
and I'm like I know, looking at it, it was a couple of thousand dollars. I guess maybe he just forgot he had in his car,
but he like left go to lunch and left his car. And I'm like,
dude, no, no, like you did that on purpose, Like you know's the weirdest things. But see, I can clean that's you,
guys. I got car stories forever. But like I said, these ones
this week. It just like I said, if somebody comes over to help
you, guys, just know they probably have the best intentions. But if
they break it and you don't have the knowledge to fix it, ask me questions deeper. Yeah, I always do that. Go look it up,
maybe like YouTube it, do something, because you're always gonna, like you get in the worst situations. And like I said, man, friends are
the best or but sometimes sometimes they don't have answer, and then you're stuck having to go to repair shop and it's like, oh, that's why they bring it to one of one. It is for you thinking that one of
