Ford announced that they killed the f-150 lightning
Yeah, yeah, we knew that was coming. Of course. I mean a mid-mountain losses and demand that was you know, fledgling
They'll no longer make the f-150 electric vehicle
Uh, I mean it just never reached
The enthusiasm or production levels for it to make sense. But when you look at the numbers, oh my god

Ford lost 13 billion on evs
since 2023
but
their fourth quarter write down
um because of the closing of this plant and everything like that
19.5 billion dollars is going to be their estimated fourth quarter write off on on the entire electric vehicle business
I mean that huge on top. I wonder if that is on top
It has to be on all of the write-offs and and losses they've had on all the recalls, you know, they've had so many recalls
Um, which was in the billions of dollars. That's uh, that's pretty serious actually
Um, and this electric electrification thing was such a bunch of bullshit. It really really pisses me off, man
Here's here's the issue though. This isn't
this isn't really
Ford's issue with the lightning and stopping the lightning
This is a financial. Can you stop lightning? That's my question
This was all come down to a financial issue as you were saying brad
This isn't really a numbers issue because if you look at the production numbers that they were selling
they're selling
24 000 units in 2023 last year
33 000 units. Um, I think they've sold 25 000 of them so far this year if you're
Ford Mustang or Camaro or something, you know, like if you're
You know, you know a sports car manufacturer. You're like, you know what those are pretty decent numbers
You can sell 30 000
copies of a car like that's a profitable number in most cases
The issue here is is with ev and the large evs with the mass of batteries in these trucks
It's not a profitable case. So right now and development costs. I would think too are outrageous. Oh, yeah, and so fords
Ford's decision of doing
smaller less expensive evs
and developing off of a modular platform that that
skateboard that we were talking about at some point, right, you know
It's a chassis. It's got a battery
It's sort of a load bearing that holds it together front and rear suspension electric motors
And to be able to scale that
To smaller and larger vehicles, right? You go, hey, I want to do
A coupe for example or a sedan or a little bit larger suv
Right. Yeah. Gale that up and down. Maybe it's got a slightly bigger battery. So you need that modular platform
so that's what ford wants to do but
Also, they just don't see it as
large
Road trip vehicles, which is one of the things we've been talking about quite a bit on on car cast as well

Why do we keep having like the road trip vehicle that you get away for the weekend?
You had to mammoth or something you're going skiing and it's got 230 miles of range, you know, and it's an ev
It's like that's not what people want. No, you want the ev around town your daily commuter
You plug it in you don't have to hit the gas station, especially in la where there's often lines for
For for gas it's like and then you've got your, you know
The family truckster if you will for for the weekend trips or or move stuff around
So the idea of the big electric vehicle
Doesn't make financial sense for a company like ford. I don't know what like
GM's gonna do. They've got their Silverado. That's not selling. Well that ev
They got their Hummer. That's ev. Yeah. Yeah, but that was always meant to be niche. Yeah
Ford says that that they're going to do a new f-150 that is hybrid
That is much like what we were talking about
With the gas the gas motor and the electric motor and that and that in the future
50% of their vehicles are slated to be hybrid
So but this one instead of the regular hybrid, this is what we were talking about with what ram was doing
This is a range extender
So this is an electric vehicle that has a small gas engine like the scout we talked about the scout
It's an electric vehicle the electric motors power the wheels and then there's a small gas engine
That's a generator on board generator right simply charges the batteries. Yeah, so you still get
That low-end torque, right you get good towing capability because of that torque
Silent drive essentially when the gas engine is not fired up
Still quick acceleration
So it would be like taking my
Ford lightning and throwing a you know the honda generator it under the rear bumper and having it just kind of
fire up and and charge all the time and it
It doesn't necessarily
You know like the plug-in hybrids i'm not a big fan up because you get 30 more 40 miles away
Yeah, you don't get enough out of it to make you know, you didn't plug it in every night
You know, but this isn't necessarily that you can drive this thing like an ev you can plug it in at home
You can not use the gas engine if you don't need the on-board generator. You don't need to but
With the with the on-board generator
And the battery combined you're looking at up to 700 miles of range
Wow, see that makes sense and you know, I've been I've been kind of going down
Down the rabbit hole again on those bmw i3s
They've kind of they've kind of piqued my interest again
And and and that's kind of what they do they have that little generator in the back a little three cylinder, right?
And and and it's the range extender and it is a generator
It doesn't power the wheels like a motor does right it regenerates the batteries
Um, but the same thing you can run it off that
Like like like it's meant to be like oh when it gets down to you know when it's 75 percent
You know it jumps on and and and kind of keeps the batteries going
But it will run the car because it charges the batteries enough to keep it running
Now it's not built for that, but but that's ideal. You know, I mean, I mean that that's what you want
Um, it makes sense

CEO jim farley said the car makers nearly 20 billion dollar write down is following and then in quotes
Following customers to where the market is not where we thought it was going to be
Yeah, so, you know, what's interesting is
Toyota was right the whole time. Yes, the CEO Toyota was like
I don't care what mandates are coming out coming down. I don't care like what
Administration is forcing EVs and all the incentives that you know like certain states like California were doing they're like
That's not the future. I don't see it happening. The technology is not there
These like we've mastered and they have Toyota
mastered the hybrid technology
And uh, that's what we're sticking with and now here. We are a few years later and the dust is settling and Toyota's like
We haven't changed our tune at all. We're still heading down that path
uh, now
The range extender thing that we're talking about a little different than the hybrid technology, right?
That Toyota is using and and Honda like the Honda Civic
I don't even think they say Honda Civic hybrid anymore. I think they're all just the Honda Civic is hybrid
and uh
That's a fantastic
car
It gets I don't know upwards of 40 something miles per gallon
And 30 000 bucks like around that range. Yeah, it's like maybe 30 maybe, you know, nice with all the options 35
Nothing's 30 000 bucks

This is the the average price of a new car right now is almost 50 000. It's like 48 9
In today's world if they brought back that uh, what was it the uh, uh, you go

It's definitely it's definitely true. I mean the um, it's it's like
There's that thing where crowds getting in, you know, like if you're in a crowd and somebody starts getting like
Let's get them. Let's get them. And then everybody, you know, it's that it just kind of happens. That's what all the car manufacturers did

Do it and then the government jumped on and then the governors jumped on and then
All of a sudden everybody was going electric. They were getting rid of gas-powered cars going to make him illegal
And then all of a sudden
Somebody with clear sight stepped in and said, whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Wait, wait
Settle down crowd settle down and they got out the water cannons shot the guys
Water cannons cooled them all off and now we're back to reality once
I was gonna say where you going?
The only unfortunate thing is that is that um, there was a lot of money dropped in the street when uh,
When that water cannon hit him, yeah
a lot of it

so are you down are you down with
the electric range extender ev are you down with like
Ram charger and the new version of the lightning and the scout
and like what you're because the flip side of that is
Like in ram's case, they have a v6 under the hood. It doesn't have the front
You know, so now you're hauling around
an entire
six-cylinder engine a fuel tank electric motors a battery like a lot now
with scout
They're gonna do like a small gas engine like under the rear bumper
You know, this isn't it's not meant to completely change its storage capability and all that stuff
now ram's issue is
Ram is saying
But we have a lot of customers that tow stuff and when they go out of town and they bring a camper
Or they bring their motor toys or something with them
So having the v6 doesn't necessarily mean you need the six-cylinder all the time
But if you're going up the grapevine and you're towing
And they want to have that thing have a huge towing capacity
The six-cylinder will rev up and provide more current more charge to the batteries
Right, so you can tow and still have decent range
But when you don't need it
Or you're going downhill for example or not towing
You don't need the six-cylinder as much or you don't need it to even rev up as much to generate more power
And that makes sense, but not only that I think with with technology too trailers are becoming smart
I know there's several travel trailer companies that are making smart trailers that are that are basically electric
And they do regenerative braking and they do you know that they have they assist
They they supply more power to the vehicle if needed or less
So it's basically like you're towing nothing
Yeah, and and and that's really smart. So maybe we could see some of that implemented too
But I'm a fan of the hybrid in any configuration whether it favors ev or whether it favors
fuel
Either way I I'm a fan of making something we have
A system for better
Um, just the full ev thing, you know, I've never never been on board with that
It it definitely comes with some behavioral changes
You have to say the I mean if it's if it fits your lifestyle and you live in
San Francisco or somewhere where there's I don't know if there's plenty of chargers there
If you live somewhere where there's a lot of chargers silicon valley, whatever and you're commuting
An electric and that's your thing you want to see into the future fine
But for someone like me man, I'm not for it
But just seeing just seeing the aftermath of all of this and in our economy and everything going on
I just want to go in see
You know now there there are as someone with an ev there are some interesting
There are some interesting advantages for one, especially being where I am on the west side in LA
Gas stations often have a line all the time. There's a cost go up the street
You know, you're gonna sit there for 20 or 30 minutes easy
And so I I don't do that other than the press cars that we drive
I haven't been to a gas station, you know in in years now, right?
So so I don't have to do that at all. I can bring it home. I charge it at my apartment complex
They installed some extra chargers
but
You know, I I came home late all the chargers were full and all of the garages and I know I had to do something the next day and
You know, what did what did I have to do? I had like you fired the generator like I couldn't charge it at night
I got up early and then found a charger in the garage. You got a couple hours of charge
Like if you could charge it at home, it's nice if you can't you're gonna run into issues
But that being said, I you know, I got the alert on my phone or the email
It's like, you know, your truck's got 20,000 miles come in for the scheduled maintenance the 20,000 schedule maintenance
And um, and there was a few like recalls or like we you know, we want to fix a tail lamp for you
We're gonna do the software update and I was like, okay, I'll take it in do all that stuff
you know and
They said well the schedule maintenance is
$310 and I go, yeah, I don't think I want to do that. I go, what do you guys do?
It's electric they go
We rotate the tires and we do the cabin filter. I go well first of all that shouldn't be $310, right?
And second of all, I go, they got to make some of those billions back. Okay
I was like, I I just had your guys across the street at gallup and auto sports
I was like, I just had your guys put wheels and tires on it because we took it to the SEMA show last year
So that's done and I did the cabin filter myself. It's funny
So then I came back onto the facebook groups the the the lightning groups and I was like, hey guys, um
I just was quoted, you know in LA
$310 for schedule made for the $20,000 maintenance and some guy was like
He was like, oh, I just did mine too. They said they're gonna rotate the tires and do the cabin filter everybody was on board
That's what the maintenance is
But brad, I don't know if it was like the dude was in like Nebraska or something
He was like, I was quoted $82 for my maintenance
There you go. Yeah, that's living in california. I was like, wow
but but but but but going
Going back to what you were saying about lifestyle change
Yes and no because it's relative now now
We all have a lot of classic cars and classic cars have
Reliability quirks. Yeah, so it could be like that
I could be going to drive one of my other cars in the morning and oh the battery is dead or oh a tire is flatter
Oh, you know a mouse got into the car brain and I gotta pull something out of a hole
You know, I mean something always happens and you spend that amount of time and have to modify your day
Anyway, so I think all that is relative, but um, yeah
this
I I put 25 30 000 plus miles a year on vehicles
I mean, I'm always blown away that I have two vehicles that I put 18 000 miles on in a year
And I'm like, where do we go?
We drive so much and everywhere you guys go you drive
I don't even think you've been on a plane the last time you were on a plane is like if you're not flying with your family trip
Was I think we went to Syracuse, New York for that show
That was a while back like honestly that was the that's the last time I could think of you on a commercial flight
I mean, yeah, I mean if it's not over water
Uh, or I can't drive there in time
Uh, or it's the middle of winter and I'm not driving to Oklahoma. I'll wait till the spring
But yeah, I I like the experience of driving. I like I like driving
I like the experience of being in a vehicle and that's why we have so many fun vehicles
I love the experience of seeing what's what's beyond my my doorstep
Because I don't leave the house much otherwise
I like the the companionship of my family my wife and my dog even
Although I think I'd complain more about having the dog with us, but anyway, um
They're hairy, uh, but yeah, I mean, I love the experience. You know, I love the stops
I try to talk charlotte into
Let me take take, you know, go get a brand new Yukon and drive it back to Nebraska with the dogs and she's like
We're not going that far. I'm like we used to when we were younger. We used to do it all the time. Yeah
You know and and you know, but now that you're your dad moved to hawaii though
You don't really have much of a choice. Although what was that that like that shark thing that you had in your shop
And you're holding for your friend that because in the water
I don't know
He's gonna get an amphibic car and drive over that. That's right
I think the I think the sea breacher would be a little tough from from here to to hawaii, but you know, listen give it a shot
Yeah, no, if I don't have to cross an ocean
Or or or an avalanche
Uh, I I drive, you know, I mean i'm going back to tahoe tomorrow
For one day, you know, because I mean, what am I gonna fly there? You know, but for us too, you know, especially when we were in tahoe
Um, it was almost more economical because i'm not charging for my time
But it was more more economical really to drive to vegas than to fly to vegas. I mean if you look at the time frame
Uh, it's a couple hours difference in doing water both because by the time I get a ride to the airport or leave a car to the airport
There's an hour and a half to three hours depending on which airport you go
Uh, and then once I get to vegas, I got to rent a car and deal with all that and you know by the time I'm I'm done
And sitting at the hotel
I may be only saved an hour
Or two for for me up in tahoe for you and la, you know lax might be closer
There might be more transportation to and from the airport that's convenient
But living in tahoe there wasn't at all
So I'd rather just get in the car hit 395 cross over to whatever and just look at the beautiful scenery the whole way there
Talk to my wife. Listen to a podcast make a few phone calls. Whatever. Um, but I like that time, you know, yeah
Sure as hell don't like standing in line waiting for to get on an airplane
And then dealing with everybody on the airplane
And then getting off the airplane if you're
45 minutes maybe an hour away from the airport
Yeah, hour and a half minimum hour and a half minimum. Yeah, you got to consider other people's times as well
It's like if you're going hey, I'm going to get a ride
From somebody now you're asking that person like you're going to do a round trip for two hours an hour there and back
Exactly when you come home another hour there and back that gives me a ride never complains
He just says please give me a good rating and a tip
Yeah, like that's the other thing. It's like, okay. Well, then you either pay to get a ride
Right, or you ask somebody to you know to to spend hours
Or you park at the airport and pay when you come home. You got this giant bill
Parking there. God. Yeah parking at airports has gotten
Ridiculous
Lax is stupid because if you if you want to park at the airport
There's just the expense of short-term parking at the airport
Otherwise, all of the parking is off-site. So like what are you really saving here?
You still have to get a ride or take a tram
And then you still got to get on a bus or something and then you know, like you've just added so much time to it
It's like what are you what are you doing? It's just a
And you're still going to pay. I don't know 22 bucks a night

So like a guy like Adam Cruller that goes on the road all the time
When if he's flying out of Burbank
if he's
If he's like i'm gonna i'm gonna fly out friday
I'm gonna do shows someplace on friday and saturday and come back sunday
He may drive to the airport leave his car there
Like literally just like at the valet at Burbank airport and he's like i'll be back in 48 hours
And yeah, that's probably 60 bucks a night, but it's not there for a week
And he's like for the 120 bucks and the convenience and not having to give a ride
And do the ride share and he's like that's what it would have paid for ubers anyway
And it's just and is that a ride off?
Yeah, and and you're working right you're working on that on that
He just puts it on his rider and says yeah and parking at the airport. Yeah, right?
That's my brown m&m's. Yeah, and then I get it because
It for him to go like oh like i'm doing podcasting
Then I got to go right to the airport like just the time just the time you're saving to do it, right?
Yeah, like part of the whole reason why your dad got a plane when he wanted a plane
He's just like I think of all the amount of time he's saving by going

So much of what he uses that plane for for example is for gigs. It's for paying gigs. Yeah, it's for paying gigs

So I think time means more than it ever has as he gets older
But no that is extremely valid for for celebrities or business people
Whose time is their equity?
Yeah, these time savings are are crucial and that's why I said up front, you know, this isn't about my time
Is being part of the economy of it
Or value of it. I just enjoy how I know it is because it's a way to use your your time in a different way
That's pleasurable to you and that's that's what the automobile in america has always been it's been

You want to be able to have a car that if you say, you know what I'd like to go out to
Here or I'd like to drive to phoenix or vegas or or san francisco or wherever
Across the country. You want to be able to jump in your car and do it and we have the road system
We have the infrastructure. Yeah, or gas cars to do that
Yes, and and and the other thing too is is is like you said it's about that experience and
And with family time or with the dogs or whatever
That used to be the family vacation. Yeah, you know the escape and the road trip
I mean, there's so many films and books and media and stories about the trip
It's the journey not the destination, you know and and and to me the vehicle is a really important part of that if if
Driving an ev enhances that experience, then I would be driving an ev
It's not just a tool for for us. It's an important part of that
Experience it's it encapsulates that and experience it drives
It's the literally the vehicle that that moves that experience. So we choose
That's why we have cars that we do everybody's like we have all these cool cars
Well because all we do is drive
We're we're we're not we don't want the Prius because the Prius doesn't provide us the experience
Why we would buy the Prius would be to do those one halls and do those things
I don't want a Prius because I don't enjoy the experience of it

It's like a fine wine. They wanted to breathe. So so here's the thing. It's not about any recalls or anything like this
It's about it's about the fact that it's carbon fiber
And and if you're going to drive an expensive car like this, you're usually going to ppf it, right?
You want to protect the paint? Yeah, the problem is
Is is these cars are pretty much finished and made here, right? So the not you say ppf
It's it's not like a production facility in europe or somewhere in the world
And then it's finished and it sits in the yard and then it it goes on a ship and it gets shipped here
A long period of time in between that
The paint out gases differently off metal and plastics and it does off something even carbon fiber
Yeah, and any type of metal so so carbon fiber
It's a weave. It's porous. It encapsulates and traps
Gases so that so the carbon fiber itself has to out gas and to get paint to adhere to it
You often have to use an adhesion promoter or some sort of physical you have physical and chemical
So you have like a a physical grit which helps things adhere to it
And then you have a chemical bond which helps things adhere to it and you have to find the right balance of those
So the problem is if you ppf something
Like this car for instance, which is what this article is about from jelopnik
If uh, if you ppf it too early, it doesn't have time to out gas
You're talking about out gassing from the carbon fiber and out gassing from the paint materials and you seal that in with a ppf
Something's going to fail and it's usually going to be the paint
But you're gonna get bubbles, you know possibly bubbles. Yeah, or pinholes and um
ppf experiences with my dog. He out gasses all the time
Well, you ppf them too early. Exactly. That was the problem, right? The hair comes with it
And and ppf has a really really aggressive adhesion
So if you if you start yanking on this stuff to take it off
It's going to pull paint and it's going to go all the way down to the carbon and a new paint job from one of these
I mean folks a modern day
Show car paint job is upwards of a hundred grand
If you can find someone to do it conservatively, it's 20 30 grand
I mean, it's not cheap and I doubt they'll warranty it. So yeah, that's that's why they're saying don't drive it yet
Give it time to out gas
Then ppf it and then drive it because I know even when we got the Porsche that's
Three four five years old now five years old now. I wanted to ppf it. I want to drive it
Until I ppfed it. Well, I still haven't ppfed it
Then I got a brand new windshield on the Jeep
And and and I went to the windshield
Guys and and got ordered the film and the film came was delivered to Tahoe by accident
And on the way down here the last time a rock chipped the brand new windshield
So now I got to put another windshield in it before I can put the ppf on the windshield to protect it from the next damn rock
I'm telling you it's a process
It is rants over the how now now realistically
What do you think the percentage of guys that will read that letter?
They get their gtd and they're still they still drive it. Oh, they're gonna drive it
Absolutely, I mean listen you can drive it. You just can't ppf it and they're saying what they're saying is that paint is soft
It hasn't you know, there's the out gas of the of the carbon fiber, but there's also of the paint and
You know, um, why doesn't for to have a curing facility a big warehouse where they just
Out gas the cars for 30 days and oh, then they'd have to charge even more
But um, but no that would be expensive and people want their car delivered
By the way, if I needed if I wanted to just
Have my car sit for 30 days. I rather sit where I can stare at it than sit
You know like then, you know in some some
Storage facility in detroit or whatever. Yeah now before this though
Go ahead. I was just gonna say remember the old days when you'd get a like a high performance car and it was like
The break-in period don't jump on it
Yeah, I mean they still do that. I know but it was still a big break-in. It was more prevalent before computers and before
You know was
Now it's just in in new car mode

at Monterey car week, I know uh
Bo bachman at galpin ford got his gtd, which was paint to sample and his bowberry
Pinkish, right? He had his four gt done that right and he wanted to take it to Monterey
So it literally got delivered like the day before he had to leave
He sent it to galpin auto sports his place there had a pbf and he drove it to Monterey
This is way before this is now months before ford issued any sort of
Warning going hey, maybe you shouldn't do it. That's gonna be blister on the hood. Well, I mean I
Look I
I certainly don't want anything to happen because bow's a good guy and that car was paint to sample. Maybe he's the reason maybe
Now the flip side is is
He owns the dealer. He owns the ppf
You know facility he has a paint booth and a paint guy at house
He knows the color of the bowberry color
So it doesn't mean it's not going to cost him $50,000 to fix the car if it comes and who wants to have to fix it
Yeah, right right now it's repainted. Yeah, but at least he has the resources, you know under his
You know management to get something like that done where you know, the rest of us would be literally going to him and going
We'd be like
You know, hey, I I bought a gtd from ford. It was from you guys and we ppf'd it and now what do we do now?
Also, some companies like alpinado sports. They they warranty that work. So then what happens?
Yeah, are they calling their customers and going?
We should probably take that off

Yeah, but like erin said when the paint's still curing and like that you go to pull that off
It's going to take the paint right off it to most likely. Yeah
And remember ppf is not like vinyl, you know vinyl is literally vinyl ppf is a polyurethane
The adhesive on a ppf is brutal, man
I was watching a thing online of a guy who had
his yacht
ppfed all that super high finish woodwork inside the table like that because he because he leased it
and
He was he was saying I had this done so that things wouldn't get nicked and scratched when people lease because they're not
careful and
He goes I was really upset because when I got it there were some small air bubbles
I said I didn't pay all that money to have air bubbles and
He filmed them taking it off and oh my god. I thought I thought the wood was going to just come apart
There's in there and they're doing all the I mean as strong as they could
Pulling that and you're just seeing it. I'm just waiting. I'm going. Oh man
We're going to see this thing just delaminate or something done never did but you have to use steam or even hot water boiling water
To to loosen up that adhesive. It's uh, it's tricky stuff. I'm actually learning to do it
It's it's been on my bucket list to learn
To do ppf, you know, I've kind of experimented with a lot of things and being able to
Be able to apply them and and ppf is is my next big challenge
so I've been going down the deep dive for a while, but
Yeah, it's uh, it's gnarly stuff. But man, is it good when you get the good stuff. It's good
Yeah, I've got I got one of the uh, the
Ford Mustang e-bikes
Right like I had it at simo last year on the back. That was the prototype bike and um, I finally got the bike
And uh, I'm like, oh, I've got a ppf this thing like it's painted. It's nice
You know, you kind of have to lean it up against stuff and you know, you're riding it and it's just like, ah, it's just too nice
I was like
Even if ppf doesn't last forever, but it's like you you kind of want to do it on the bike. It's a thick frame
It's kind of rectangular frame. It's painted nice and it's a cool piece
But also the bike is 70 pounds, right, you know, so
um, and we
We've ridden them around but
You know, you still get
sand and chips and and even just like on the streets or along the beach like
You got to wipe it down. It's going to get kind of dinged down. It was like, oh, we should ppf the bike
I'm just going to find somebody to do it. You know what you just brought up an interesting idea
So we're talking about power to weight ratios and and we're talking about hybrids and you were saying well
by the time you get the motor and the fuel tank and the batteries and I'm like
You you've added all this weight to a truck that going back to that gmc truck or gm truck
um
That you've added all this weight to the truck and now I have to compensate for that weight with power
So I have to add more power to get it to work properly now that it's a hybrid
Think of the bicycle. So what is your average?
Let's let's let's say road bike. What is your average road bike?
High performance road bike way with all the latest tech and it's all carbon fiber or kevlar
All these you know titanic right like like 10 10 12 pounds
What does an e version of that way an e bike version? They're about 65 to 70 pounds exactly
So think of that. I mean that is substantial. That's a bicycle the ratio is probably a little different than a car
But is it and how many pounds of uh ppf are you going to put on it?
But at that point, you know, it's funny because on the e bike, I'm like, who cares I already weigh 70 pound
If you have like a really nice carbon fiber bike, you're like, I don't want to add the ounces
You know because those guys don't even want to put a sticker on it because well, you know
It's Porsche like on the race cars, you know the little
Little tin emblem that's on the hood. They use the sticker on the racing car
It's a little bit lighter. It's a little bit lighter
We use the the the little vinyl, you know, or the woven door polars
Yeah, you know instead of you know, like an aluminum handle or something, you know something like that
So I remember we were having that discussion at the drag races once about how um
The difference between when they used to paint the funny cars with all the paint versus the the wraps
The wraps weigh a fraction of what all that paint did, you know, yeah

On all of the EVs the heavier vehicles, you know, uh
What what's happening? Is it is there more tire wear or is there more road wear?

The asphalt just took all of the uh, the dust from the tires putting it all in

I don't know what the regulations are an environmental impacts of things where maybe they're
Filling holes with with a lesser compound and they used to has more of recycled materials in it. I don't know but
In in the right lane there are deep grooves that they just keep filling and filling and filling
Along the entire road and it was really apparent off the 80
On the north shore side coming up from Sacramento
Which is where the big trucks and all the the heavier vehicles would go
You could see on the right and the right lanes
I couldn't even drive
In those lanes and some of the vehicles I have like the mini cooper because it would it would jerk the car around
Violently and and it was pretty gnarly and same with the old defender with the skinny tires
It would jerk it around like crazy
Now south shore is that way and just because of the volume of the people who have moved there
But also there are a lot of teslas
There's a lot of evs that go up there a lot more trucks and deliveries and and and and heavier equipment
That's maintaining things for the volume of people that moved up there

That the roads are so much worse than they used to be
But I'm still going back to you know, it's something that we've lived with our whole lives and
I've never really thought about that

But speaking of Tahoe and your electric car Matt, we went off track
What were you saying when we went into tire dust? I have no idea
Well, I don't know but brad but you were talking about lightweight and and drag racing too
I was talking about pbf my electric bike
Pbf and your electric bike. Hey, what about preconditioning your ev? Do you ever precondition your uh your truck?
I I don't because the weather is always
Nice, you know, basically it's you know, it's always 60 70 degrees, but
That isn't that is an issue which is the optimal range
Which is pretty amazing because when you think about it, they say the optimal range for a ev is 60

Six is not that low. I mean you think about across the country. We're spoiled out here
But most of the country there's a huge part that's always below 60 degrees and
You don't precondition a battery
It's going to uh, not you're not going to have that range that you're expecting out of it
And the colder it gets the worse it gets
And um for something like my truck, um, you know as a bit of a cost saving
measure, uh
It doesn't have like battery temperature management
You know, and that's an issue like again, I'm talking to people on the forums where
You know, they're like, hey, I'm
You know
Taking my truck and I'm trying to plug it in and trying to charge it
But it's freezing out and it's taking hours and takes so long. Yeah, it's like, yeah
It's tough to to charge when it's that cold and it's tough to charge a frozen battery. Yeah
And I thought all of these had that no they they they don't now you can precondition a battery you can
Like I can go to my ford app and tell the vehicle to like precondition about before I start driving it and stuff, but uh
It doesn't have
Some of the more sophisticated ones are
Like liquid cooled and warped, you know, they've got they've got like a coolant going through it
They can they can
You know change. Yeah
And and it's also for like the quick chargers
If you don't precondition just even in normal times
If you just get in your car drive over to a quick charger before it's um
Preconditioned it it's not warmed up. The battery is not warmed up
Um, it will not charge as fast as you want it to it charges slower as well
Oh, yeah, for sure. Yeah, so you were saying I should put my air pods in my armpit before I charge. Yes, absolutely
But I was very surprised that
That that 60 degree mark because I think that just seems you know, pretty warm
Uh, there's a lot of people in the midwest and in the east coast where it gets to be 60 degrees in the spring
They're wearing shorts and flip-flops man out here
We're like going oh my god, it's cool. Um, but uh, they also said if you don't precondition
Uh, you you actually lose 33 up to 33 percent. Wow. Wow. There's there's different versions of it too. I want to say like
Hyundai and Kia is doing like a liquid cooling and heating version
Um, the Ford lightning. I don't think my truck had it was a very early one
I'm not sure when they started adding heat pumps. There's like heat price for the for the battery performance
um
Yeah, I guess there's just a couple different versions of ways you can get that done, but yeah
It's just another thing you have to do but they said the article I read was pretty interesting. It said a lot of people
I have conditioned themselves into kind of a a false
that if the car is warm
Meaning in a cold climate if they start the car
And get the cabin warm they think the battery is warm and they said that's a misnomer that it
It really the cabin can be warm. It can be you know doing all that but uh, it's not not the battery
And they said it's just kind of one of those psychological things only cars warm. It must be you know, but I think that goes back to
The olden days when you know your car your motor had to be warm to get warm air out of the heater
You know because it because the water cycled through the heater core and all of that, you know
And um and those people that had Volkswagen Beatles. They never got
or diesel
I remember kids in high school in Nebraska that they'd pull up
They could not wait to get to class because they were so frozen in that Volkswagen Beetle
They drove all the way there, you know
Going back to you mentioned Syracuse earlier to remember when we were walking through
Somewhere in Syracuse a parking lot or something and there was all the little plugs
Hanging out of the front of the cars. Oh, yeah
You didn't know what they were
To warm the block so they had a frozen block. Yeah, they were all plug-in hybrids
I had one of those in my Chevelle in high school when I bought it. It had one of those plug warmers
Or block warmers block warmers. Yeah, and I I plugged it in a couple times and
You know because you did not want that, you know, you had antifreeze in there, but
Man, if you're block froze and cracked the block you were screwed. Yeah, you know, I I got a magnetic one for for
For my old Land Rover diesel that I had the old Mercedes diesel in my old series Land Rover
And I remember I I bought a system and and and put it in there
And it it made a difference that you put a light we used to put a light bulb just a little clip light, you know
underneath the hood
So you had the clip light and and you had the little block heater and it it did start a little easier like like it was
Yeah, okay, it was hard to start in the winter that old hard to start when you got a slushy in your block

But uh, it it it would fire up a little easier

Crossed the gamut from an escalade to a Porsche. I just don't know and so I'm driving a lot of different things
Just to see what I like
So I drove the new Hyundai Palisade the 2026. This is the one you're probably seeing on the road
It's got like the stacked led lights in the front kind of looks like a Range Rover
Um, uh neat little feature like on this steering wheel instead of a badge with the name of the vehicle like Land Rover Hyundai Ford whatever
There's these four little lights and when you start up the vehicle
They flash in a certain sequence and we I just found out recently. It's Morse code for Hyundai
Oh, that's funny. Oh now we got to learn Morse code
Otherwise, how do you know what you're in a Hyundai? But uh the Hyundai Palisade
It's a three row suv
um, I drove the top version called the calligraphy and that one has the second row captain's chairs and then
There's a third row
So the captain's chairs in this one don't fold like fully flat
They kind of move forward and kind of tuck themselves in and then the third row folds flat
So if you're looking for like full
You know a deck in the back to store stuff you want to haul four by eight sheets of plot. You know, yeah
But it's gorgeous inside
Um, it worked well
I will say so there's a gas engine in a hybrid version and honestly you don't want the gas engine version
It's like $2,000 cheaper. But at the end of the day, it's not worth it. It's slower
It's far less efficient. The hybrid version is it it works. Well, it's seamless transition between the gas engine and the
That the uh the hybrid version
Between the gas engine electric motors better gas mileage all around. It's like a second quicker
No, it's a four. Uh, I believe I believe it's a four cylinder with uh with hybrid
um
And it's nice and the fully loaded version is 60 grand
You know, I I mean not that 60 grand is cheap. But in a world of luxury suvs this kind of
Gets close into that market. I know genesis is their brand. That's luxury
But they don't have a three row yet and they don't have you know a hybrid version yet. So hunday
Is the wing back is not ready yet the wing back now that thing's cool. But that's uh
Yeah, um
But this is a really nice vehicle. I drove it out
I drove about an hour or so out to urlindale
I had to head out to the warehouse where um all of the bravado hard seltzer is
And I needed to bring back a bunch of cases and deliver them to stores
I wasn't sure like what was going to fit
You know was weight a concern
So I grabbed 30 cases which is about 600 pounds and it was super easy
Super easy. It's like having a couple people in the car. So it was like having erin and I in the car with you
I'm just saying
The difference between jamming all of us in the back of erin's 9 11 versus in the back of the hunday palisade
The palisade's probably what you want to the winner
Probably what you want to go with I've got to say I was um
very impressed I
I went down to rent a vehicle and
I asked the guy at the rental car car counter. I said, hey, you know, what he what he got and he was telling me and
And I go, which one would you take and he goes the hunday and I go
What and he goes, dude, I'm I'm telling you man
He goes I drove this thing and it is really nice
And I said are you sure because I'm going to phoenix and back and he goes and he goes no you'll like it
and
I did I really did like it. It it wasn't the hybrid or no
No, it was just the gas motor. Yes. Okay. Um, but it was very nice. Still got great mileage
Um, I it was comfortable. It was uh, it had it wasn't the fastest vehicle I've ever driven
but it had plenty of acceleration and um got great fuel mileage even with just the gas motor and uh, I was I was
pleasantly surprised
Uh, and the aesthetics of it the looks of it were nice. The interior is nice. The exterior is nice. Yeah, it's really smooth inside
Like I'm surprised. I don't know if it's just the wide angle
But but but but like like where the armrest is and the window controls and stuff that panel
Looks like it might have a top seam in it other than that. It's just one giant piece of
I'm guessing leather vinyl or or or something
PLU but uh or pu but it's uh
Yeah, it's very smooth and like curvaceous and bubbly inside. It's trippy looking
Huh, whatever I buy. I'm gonna let it sit for 30 days before I let it sit for 30 days for sure

The reason why I was laughing so hard is because you said it wasn't the fastest thing of every trip

What that's so like relative because you've driven like 200 mile per hour cars
I know but but I mean I've driven SUVs where they put you back in the seat

Yeah, it's not the fast thing. Actually it's on the lower 1% of what I've driven

Tesla drivers love to use their acceleration and their teslas even if they're not capable of using it

Quick comment the autonomous driving thing
My truck has
Ford's blue cruise, right? So
you know, it's the
It's the cruise control it has the sensor so it sees the car in front of you, but but it does have a hands-free
feature
But it
It works on certain roads
It'll tell you so like if you're driving on the 405 or something out here in la or on the five or whatever
And you're using the cruise control it'll say hands-free available and you can take your hands off
it has these cameras that look at you so
You know, it'll tell you when to put your hands and stuff back on the vehicle, but
Some of our roads out here you're talking about shitty roads
Some of them are so shitty that you're driving and you'll hit the bump and it's doing hands-free
And it jerks the truck all over and it's trying to stay in its lane and then it starts beeping
It's like put your hands on the wheel put your hands on the wheel like it's it's like that's one thing that didn't
It's tough to predict that it's like what do you do when the road is so terrible
It doesn't know when the road is
Talking about up in tahoe the big ridges in the road. Yeah. Yeah, they're gnarly man
Speaking of the last time we were up there like a week ago
Uh, we were driving down and we were in Misha's little Porsche
And a lot of congestion. It was just one of those, you know, fridays that just kind of sucked driving
And there is this guy in front of me and then a and a little pickup truck and then in front of him there was a
a
Subaru so I expected all the chaos to be from the Subaru, but it was the truck in front of us that uh
I I suspect he was drunk because he was just changing his speed constantly
Driving over the lines on the right driving over the lines on the left
And and I'm trying to keep a relative distance behind him because every time he drives over those lines
He kicks up a bunch of rocks and shit
So I'm I'm getting a little aggravated because that's an issue for me right now
Especially part of the stress of driving a nice cars

So, you know passing lane came he went into the left lane
Subaru went into the right lane. I'm just like, oh my gosh. Here we go. So right towards the end
Uh, I just cut in between them and pass them
And he just he got into my skin too much. So I laid on my horn, which I never do
But I let Aaron I laid on my horn
How dare you pass him
Because he kept drifting into the middle of the road blocking the lane and he was staying in the left lane
So I had to pass him on the right yet. He kept drifting into the lane
So as he drifted halfway into my lane, I laid on my horn and then I just
Hit hit the accelerator on the Porsche and just launched, right?
So I look at my rear premiere and he's trying to chase me down
So I'm going that's because of that red foam finger that you have that that you flip people off with
My audible middle finger. Yes. So I I let him have my audible middle finger
And I'm just like, dude, you're driving unsafe. Well, not thinking clearly at that point because I was
aggravated
Yeah, he chased me down. He chased me down for
Well, not too long because I'm in a Porsche
But I told me so I said, sorry, honey. I I used my middle finger
With the horn and he's going to chase us down. So I have to drive. I have to drive quickly for a little while
So I just I just did like 80 the whole way down the hill
And I just saw him very slowly just get further and further away
But he tried to chase us down and I thought man, you know what?

Do you find just in general that people are worse drivers now than they were 10 years ago. People are just angrier
That's where there's so many distractions since since since covid I have a theory about that too. Definitely angrier
Definitely angrier, but man
It's like, come on. Really? I don't want why do you make me be the asshole in the Porsche?
Like why do you you encourage that?

For 10 minutes. I was for 10 minutes. I was I was that guy. All right. You got it out of your system

the 2025 sedan or the 2026 hatchback
And i'm kind of torn because the sedan is supposed to be
It's supposed to be the better gas mileage
slightly
And but the hatchback is the 26 model. That's the newer
Version so I don't know. Yes, you know what's funny is the last time honda gave me a press car
I drove it to arizona. Yeah
Well, I specifically asked for it because we
Keep it short, but we we keep having these conversations about cars being so expensive and I was like the honda civic
It's like it's it's an award winner. It was like edmund's best of the best. It was
You know, it's 30 grand maybe 35 grand for all the options. It's the hybrid technologies gets
you know
You know 40 miles to the gallon or something or was just like rocks it always like I think
That's the I want to do the road trip in that car
Yeah, I mean they just delivered the land rover defender, which is cool, but that's going to get 17 miles to the gallon

And I was going to do the hunday palisade that we were talking about but it wasn't available
So I got it this past week, you know, so I was like, let's do the honda. You know
Not every road trip needs to be enough honda
You know needs to be enough $100,000 luxury car like this car makes the most sense
You know, because you know what guys are like in those luxury sports cars and stuff. They'll flip. Yeah
They honk at you. They flip you off. They just well, you know, you know matt
It may not be the fastest car you've ever driven. It's probably not gonna be the fastest car ever
Hey, erin, I think for the next time you do need to get I'm gonna get you for christmas one of those
Big foam ones where where it's, you know, giant. So when you flip them off, yeah
I was just thinking of getting a whole can or or maybe like a
Hellboy hand and just gluing a big hot dog on the middle
If you drove passing with the big foam finger flip me off, that would be funny. It'd be hilarious
Especially if it was a whole can or something right like yeah, I'm trying to make it work
I'm trying to make it work for always you get my point, but I'm doing it in a fun way
But but having the hot dog finger is good because if you get the the really long, you know, that's like the really long
A foot long or caspers. No, no if you get the caspers one and you give the hand a little shake
You get that you get that weenie shake, you know, that's gotta be hilarious
The only problem with that is that, you know, it sits in your car for a while. It's you know, it's gonna be a little
Or if I left the weenie shake in here again, no super easy you you go and get a whole can't and then you go to the adult store and
