Welcome to another In Wheel Time podcast, a 30 minute mini version of the In Wheel Time car show that airs live every Saturday morning 8 to 11 am Central.
We are live from the 48th annual state run of the Lone Star Street Rod Association here at Hewlett Park in Grandbury, texas.

This is the In Wheel Time car talk show Coming up more Street Rod participants.
At today's event I got to drive the 2023 Jeep Gladiator, which would have been a great tow vehicle for anything that's here today.
I'll give you my impression of it.
We'll also have the Cruise Inn calendar and Conrad has This Week in Auto History.
We'll also have a couple of stories making automotive news headlines this week.
All just ahead in this hour of the In Wheel Time car talk show.

Joining us today in the engineering department is David Ainsley and his girlfriend Donna.
Donna is here as well, and Jeff's wife, kathy, is here.
We're just having a good old time in Grandbury, texas.

Yeah, buddy, this is what I call an example of a classic hot rodding.
It's a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air.
It's got the Kragers spokes on it, chrome spokes, and Cherry Rogers knows all about it.
I want you to know that I had a cousin of mine.
Her husband had a black and white 54.
Ah, and it was Cherry and lived in Birmingham, alabama, and I don't know whatever happened to it.
He died, but at any rate what a great, great car that was And it had a three on the tree and a six cylinder in it.
That one did originally when I first found it, so it had the 235 blue flame six in it?
Yes, it sure did Yeah with a three speed on the column, yes, classic and a smooth How to drive, correct Well, my daughter would The three on the tree Probably.
I know she can drive a manual but a three on the tree It's a little bit different.
My two kids.
When I bought the car we got it running, just barely running on the six cylinder.
Well, they both drove it with the standard shifts, and that's they were young then, Yeah, and now they're both capable of doing.
you know driving.
So why did you take the six cylinder out of it?
That was, uh, that was just a plan that I had all along.
I originally I took a driver, my driver test at 16 in my grandmother's 53 Chevrolet Yeah very similar.
And we I raced the dirt cars for about 10 or 12 years and tore up a bunch of 55s and 57s, and the 54 was such a change And I went with this and I wanted the 350 or V8 in it instead of that, And that's that's how it came out.
That's, uh, that's where it is.
It's been built.
So what do you have in it?
It's got a 350, a little stock 350 with a 700 R overdrive and it's got a 10 bolt out of a Nova in the rear I'll bet you that thing goes down the highway here.
It would just like It cruises.
It'll cruise 70 pretty good.
Yeah air conditioning, oh Lord, yeah, yeah.
The wife, the wife, she said you know I'm not going unless you could get some air in there.
Well, and that's a generation of car Cause to me.
I look at the car.
You know the style but also the engineering in that car, because when you look at the glass on that car, that was kind of an arrow where glass was changing.
Yes, because glass tended to be prior to this, tended to be relatively flat, flat.
It didn't have these big, huge bows in it.
That rear glass is is got probably about a 90 degree bow, so it bows about 180 degrees from side to side.

Does it have the tube radio AM in it?
That's about.
I don't know It's about a foot wide and a foot tall.
I still have a radio.
This car didn't come with the radio and it had the cap over the dash.

Jerry, i've talked about it a lot before, if you were looking for it, but now, you're telling me if it's going to turn out, it'll be, it's fine, or if it's going to turn out not working, i don't know.

Well, you obviously are embarrassed a little bit by it or something, because it didn't really bother me.
I got that in the head.
I don't know how to pull a car that is chained to another one.
I told her, i said, if the light changes, just go on through it and that chain I mean she went to went to yellow, and sure enough, she didn't stop, she went on and because all I can, all I can think of is is having as somebody pulling you that never pulled another car before Again she had pulled previously on some you know, okay, here we go.

Now, nowadays I don't know after however many years it's been, you know how long have you had?

You've had it a long time.
And the car came out of the paint shop in 1991.
And are those?
are those the production colors of it, or do you?
it's close.

53 and 54 had, excuse me, had a brown and a white like this And I thought well, i like that.
No, I like, i like the combination And I went with the that's a Ford metallic Ford truck, brown, excuse me.
And then it's a.
Nova or something tan.
Love it, so the color combination is beautiful, thank you.

Did you do all the work on it?
I did everything but the paint and interior really built everything.
So what's the front end under it?
It's still got the stock.
Does it really arms and everything.
I put a rack and penny line Did all that to it and it's got the power, disc brakes on the front this chassis engineering Just happened to sell a kit that bolted up to the thing.

Yeah, and is it got the original steering wheel in it?
It does, it does.
Have you had it redone or did it need to be?
done.
The man the guy that painted the car for me redid the wheel, and it's still Since 91.
Oh wow, that's a talent.
Yes, and that was with the PPG paint deltron.
Yeah, it's what they used on it.
Yeah it's held up really good, then what radio did you wind up putting in there?
I've got one of the new one that I don't have to operate.

Yeah, it's got probably got Bluetooth in it, i believe it.

Exactly, is this your only all hot rod that you've ever had.
This is the first one I built after I quit the dirt racing and And that's that's what I tell the funny, i mean it.
Since I've built it, i haven't cut a tire, knocked fender off of it.
It's, you know, come off, didn't come off a racetrack.

Yes, she's so she hears right now.
Oh, she knows everything.
Right, cuz I was gonna ask you, like kind of under the breath, how much money do you think you've put into that Carson?
She bought it for not enough, you know, i really initially when it was built in, first driven.
When it hit the road in 91 It didn't have a lot of money in it.
The paint job Was not that expensive then compared to now right and Interior I think $1,000 for the interior, all everything that was done.
Oh, wow.
And the guy needed some tax money.
So I didn't work.
Headliner door cards Everything does.
He got the stock seats in it.
Yes, i love that I did not put the Bars are the things on the back of the seats where you could pull.

I like the location of the review mirrors on the outside.

I you know you can straighten it out and polish it like it looked pretty good So and then the classic kregers.

You know the original hot rod wheel?
Oh, yeah, for sure, and I I've never heard it put that way before, but that's, that's to me.
You know, and you were the odd duck if you had the keystones or the, i love.
I wanted keystones on my noble, but I ended up with a kregler style Faisal, there you go Yep Keystones your.

The trunk is uh, it's.
It's got the interior out headed, done inside it also.
Does it have that old rubber pad in there with that funky looking pattern on it?
It's got a.
Grooved, kind of a groove.

Yeah, and of course there was some sheet metal work that had to be done.
Did you do any research on it to find out anything about the serial number, where, when it was built, where it was built.
That's what.
I looked at the numbers on there but didn't go into any, any detail.
Look on the thing.
So transmission in it.
That's got the 700 overdrive.
Okay, so it makes it real comfortable on the line It does.
I built it with the turbo 350 and then Decided the 700 was the way you have headers on them.
No, no, I've got the stock cast iron exhaust.
Is it dual?
exhaust the ram, the ram horns?
Well, there it's actually an 80, 78 or 80 model truck exhaust manifold.
They dump at the back and It's it's worked out to be a pretty good pretty good, oh yeah, so bulletproof, does it engineering, does it overheat?
Not now.
It used to.
Uh, i bought a new walker radiator and put in it years ago and that it helped.
Is it aluminum radiator?
No, it's.
It's a cop, yep.
And it seems to run pretty good.
I mean in town, cruising, going slow.
And it's hard to find a copper radiator.
I believe everything's gone.
Aluminum Yeah and or plastic plastic.
that did you drive it up here from Waco?
We did Yes.
You don't trailer it anywhere.
I trailer it last year to cruising coast And I see, also got your hot rod power to her.

We did this car twice in both of them.
Yeah, that car in 2005 was driven from Waco to Milwaukee, wisconsin, down to Kissimmee Florida, back home.
So it's good.

And I asked the other gentlemen do you keep the same spot?
Do you show your vehicle in the same area of the park?
We, when we travel, we there's, we pretty much go as a club.
We were hard to take the old car club out of Waco and I think we've got about 10 of us that came up.
So where the group goes is they're all right, so you head your own hot rod power tour on the way up here Kind of did.

We were talking about that a few minutes ago.

They, they built a brand new place brand new facilities.

They're right off of 35.

Yeah, so it is something.

So they got the Hot Rod, they do all the engine work and the custom stuff across the street and then they've got it divided up into two camps on the same piece of property It is.
It's a beautiful facility and extremely talented young people.

wow, i didn't know that they still existed.

The engine builders 33, i believe he said, and he's responsible for building the fastest engine in a Corvette on a land speed.
Very tough, yeah, yeah You would be very impressed.

I had, i had a 1954 Chevrolet three quarter ton pickup truck with a two thirty five blue flame six in it, and it came somehow, uh, with a utility bed on the back of it.
We don't have the boxes at all.
Sure, and um, i only drove it for a very short period of time, as my first car was given to me and it was from up north and it was full of rust holes.
I wound up taking the body off of it and then I started, started jacking with the engine and I put an oftenhouser uh two car set up on the intake, uh two Rochester one barrels, the same one barrel that came with it, but I just added one to it and I put a hot cam in it and, uh, and that thing would fly.
It had more torque than you can imagine and, uh, i loved it.
It had a, a granny four speed in it, first gear.
I mean I had pulled down any of these trees in here, but, uh, it was a great engine and and loved it and I cut my teeth on that one.
So I've got a.
I've got a fifty-five first series that I I built and I prostrated it, so it's, it's a toy.

Time now for this hour's car review.
I drove the 2023 Jeep Gladiator.
You know anything about the gladiator.
They fought a real good war that that gladiator, but they got some really cute dresses for those boys.
Telling you Available trim levels on the gladiator, the sport, the overland, the Rubicon and the Mojave, i Added the Mojave 4x4.
This is considered a standard pickup truck.
Now you'd swear up and down.
What they did was they took a Jeep Wrangler and they took the back end off of it And they put a bed back there.
No, not true.
That's not true.
This is a purpose-built truck.
Okay, and very few parts are interchangeable as far as the body goes.
Yes, that was anything's really well, some are in some art, but that's beside the point.
You can take the doors off of it.
You can put the windshield down on, you take the top off.
Comes with a couple of top options.
What?
all that kind of like a Wrangler in that aspect Seats five people including the driver.
No real changes from last year.
I think it was new in 2021.
Exterior features has a five-foot bed on it, which is standard on all of the different trim levels.
Looks like a Wrangler with a bed added behind the cab.
A one inch lift is Different on this, one for the front suspension, because this is a mojave.
Yeah, you got the squared off upright stance.
It's beefy, off-road, seriousness.
It's not for wimps.
And a reason it's a reason that I say that is because This is not a Wrangler per se.
This is a serious off-road pickup truck.
I don't think that anything could keep up with this as far as its off-road ability other than another Jeep based Trilogy.
And it rides that way.
It doesn't.
It doesn't ride, it doesn't steer like a regular pickup truck.
This is an off-road vehicle.
Mojave has a different trim than others.
I mentioned the one inch lift on it.
A comfortable seating with mojave stitched on the seatbacks, easy to use, infotainment system on it.
It's the you connect system that works extremely well.
This really is the Swiss Army knife of buttons and switches, because, remember, this is also weather And I'm weather proof.
But whether Resistance that's a good word to use for you weather resistant, so like, for instance, the window switches to roll the windows down.
They're up on the dashboard and not in the and not not out of the door panel.
What I liked about it storage nooks everywhere, including under the rear seat, kind of like a pickup truck, weather proof, as I said, weather resistant interior.
now It has a 3.6
liter V6 in it.
A diesel is available, but that's a different animal altogether.
This V6, i think, is going to be traded out for a inline six soon.
We're talking about mistaken Right now 255 horsepower, 260 pound feet of torque through a eight speed automatic transmission, which is really plenty for this thing.
17 miles per gallon city, 22 highway for combined in 19.
I got 16.3
miles per gallon over 276 miles.
Why so few, don, i don't know.
I would imagine it's the gearing, because gearing in the rear end can change depending on what you order and the trim level.
Maybe that had something to do with it.
I really didn't delve into all of that.
This is a solid V6.
What could use improvement?
Perhaps a turbo charge, four cylinder, don't know.
Just saying.
Well, they offer it in some other lines.
I don't know if they do in the gladiator.
They do not wrangler.
No, like I said, the diesel is available, Right Handling.
This is a serious off-roader, fun and well mannered on the pavement, but it is not a car What could use improvement.
The Mojave has a different transfer case to run at higher speeds.
Did you know that Mars?
You didn't even research that?

You didn't have the Mojave.
It didn't get there because the went through construction zone, took out the windshield, so it showed up yesterday.
I haven't really had a chance to drive it yet.
Well, it has a different transfer case to run at higher speeds, so there, you have it.
Interesting.
That's why Base price on the Jeep gladiator is $50,995.
Price as tested, with all the options, is $67,000.
The base model price for a gladiator $28,775.
Okay, it's expensive, but remember it is an off-road vehicle and I can't underscore that enough.
They look cool but they are serious business underneath there.
Competitors well, there really isn't one.
but we put it in the mid-size truck category And when you do that you got the Chevy Colorado.
that starts at $29,200.
The Toyota Tacoma, it's $28,580.
And the Ford Ranger for $29,585 because you can get those in four-wheel drive.
but I'm just saying this is not that.
Four-wheel drive isn't necessarily an off-road.
If I'm a farmer and I'm living in the Hill Country and I want to go check the back 40, this would be the vehicle for me, yep.
