The cooling system keeps the engine from getting too hot. It uses parts like the radiator and thermostat to make sure everything stays at the right temperature.
A radiator helps cool down the engine by taking the hot coolant and cooling it off before sending it back to the engine. It's important for keeping the engine at the right temperature.
If a radiator is 'silted up', it means dirt or debris has built up inside, which can stop the coolant from flowing properly and make the engine overheat.

Long live my LTD.
Welcome to Car Talk. It's Tuesday night here on 908.9 Northwest FM.
It's me, Matty J, in the studio with Mr. Alan Deep Singh.
Mr. David Prince, Mr. Edward Bunting, Mr. Scotty Doe Johnson,
and Mr. Jim Barlow. How are we, gentlemen?
Good evening. Good, thank you.
Thank you very much.
Was that new intro music you had just there, Matty?
Yeah, we can hear you.
Oh, sorry.
That was a little bit of Tucker's Daughter.
Yeah, Tucker's Daughter's Memory.
That's a good song.
Was?
That's Cold Chisel?
No, it was Ian Moss.
Ian Moss, yeah, yeah.
But Ian Moss was in Cold Chisel, wasn't he?
I think he was, but it was his solo.
That was his own thing, yeah.
He's a good singer, Ian Moss.
He can build one out.
Tucker's Daughter is a memory.
So we are also joined by Rob Zidai. How are you, Rob?
Yeah, long time no speak.
Been a while. Good to see you guys.
Full House in the studio today.
It's really exciting. Good to see you guys.
What's been happening?
Let's get on with some car updates.
We'll start with Mr. Alan Deep Singh,
sitting to the right of me.
Not a lot of car updates for me.
I've missed a few programs, unfortunately,
due to random appointments.
But DMX is going fine.
I keep forgetting to hit up Isuzu,
SNN and Isuzu to say,
give me my bloody service documents,
because I've got those lovely signs
being all environmental. We've gone paperless.
And it's like, well, I still want my bloody
service receipts saying this happened
and this happened and we did all that
for when I eventually, you know,
take Isuzu to a car in a fair and say,
I just want a fair go.
But I think I need to,
I do need to get the jazz serviced.
I think that's been a bit over a year,
so I should have gotten onto that sooner.
How many Ks on that, Alan?
Probably about 2,000 more
than when you sold it to me.
What did that car done?
Yeah, I think it's somewhere around there,
110 and 111. I think it might be 111
something right now.
I remember it was over 100, but not by much.
Not by much, no.
So got to get the regular
service.
Hopefully find someone new,
maybe there's something that Maddie J
can recommend.
So that's the plans.
The STI is sitting there.
Nothing, probably getting a flat battery again,
which I'll charge up.
Put on the tender?
Yeah, but that's about all the car updates for me.
Very good.
Let's move on with David Prince,
updates with you.
I was just trying to think.
I'm up to my eyeballs in magna restoration.
I think a lot of us are.
A lot of us are, yes, yes.
We're all closing in.
That's going to be good.
This time next week,
we'll be packing our bags.
So
what else have I done
driven this week?
I swapped it over.
Had it had
the tier wagon
polished, picked that up.
Looks fantastic.
Did a couple more bits to it, finished off
painting the bumpers and stuff that I wanted to do
and another bit of detailing.
Then I took it over
to a car parking facility
that some of us are familiar with.
Probably how many Ks from my place would that be?
Five Ks?
Yeah, if that.
Where I'd left the 85 Accord hatch
that's a job for when I get back to from magna.
40th to attend to.
So I drove it home
and it
cars always smelled hot.
That oily old car smell.
And I knew it had a couple of minor royal leaks
which were cleaned down.
Anyway,
I was halfway home
and stopped at the lights
and I thought it looks very like smoke
coming from under the bonnet.
Temperature gauge was perfect.
Car driving perfect.
Absolutely not a problem at all.
So I opened the bonnet.
Certainly a bit hot.
Bit of steaming from
round the rock cover.
I thought that's not good.
So what I do, do I walk home,
leave the car here.
It's literally
half a kilometre now.
So I just drove very gingerly home.
Parked it.
Opened the bonnet.
Took a little video.
Thought, oh crap, this is just what I need right now.
And then I started gurgling.
You know, in the cars
and the cooling system is gurgling.
Not a good sign.
No.
So I thought, right, I'll shut.
That's a tomorrow problem.
I'll shut the bonnet.
That's the way to make it go away.
A lot of us have done that a lot.
Out of sight, out of mind.
When I wasn't out of sight,
it was parked in the street in my favourite car spot.
Just don't have to look outside the window, David.
It was a good day that I actually got that car parked.
Next day,
I thought I'd just let it cool down
or come back and have another look.
So went out the next day.
Opened the bonnet.
Took the oil cap off.
Absolutely clean as a whistle.
Not anything under it.
No drama.
Coolant was low.
So the overflow bottle was half full.
But there was no coolant
visible in the top of the radiator.
But it's just literally sort of
curls around and under itself
into the header tank.
So I thought, okay, well,
it's obviously low on coolant.
There's probably reasons low on coolant.
But
I don't like the gurgling sound.
So hopefully, I don't know if it's a blockage in the radiator
or an air bubble or something like that.
Did you top it up?
I haven't driven it. I've just moved it into the garage.
And as I said, that's a job for after Magna 40 now.
I might get up to...
What do you mean after Magna 40?
It's up to Magna 40.
Sorry?
It's going to Magna 40.
No, no, this is the Accord.
Oh, the Accord!
Oh, I thought this was the V6 Magna.
No, no, no, no.
No, that Magna's beautiful, mate.
Oh, okay. This is the Accord. Sorry, I got confused.
No, it's the Accord.
So, yeah, that has done
104,000 kms. Anyway, long story short,
I was buoyed by the fact that under the
oil cap was completely fine
and lovely.
So hopefully, it might
just be, I don't know, a thermostat air bubble
somewhere in the cooling system
might be a blockage in the radiator.
But I don't think it's cooked.
Let's just...
No, it doesn't sound cooked.
Sounds like it's just a cooling system issue.
Sometimes the radiators can get all silted up
and they get, you know, cold spots in them
and you have a record and it's sweet as pie.
What year is that car? How old is it?
85, so it's 40 years old.
Has it ever had a radiator?
I doubt it.
So that car has done
2,600 kms a year.
It's probably seriously
clogged up radiator and just needs that.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm pretty sure that will be.
The fact it drove beautifully still.
The fact that
it wasn't soupy, it wasn't cappuccino
under the oil cap.
All good signs.
Anyway, so that's
another job.
But I had swapped it. I also swapped
over the N1 with
that car's
that owner's, the Accord owner's
new car, which was
which is a Hyundai
venue.
And she's had that probably
3 months now, 2 or 3 months
and it had 180 kms
on the clock.
So not getting a lot of use.
I took that for a quick whiz down the freeway.
That's such a pleasant little car.
It's a cheeky little
thing and it's so comfortable
and smooth and quiet.
Yeah, 25
and a half grand or whatever it was drive away.
Hyundai venue.
Hyundai venue.
I like how it's still a manual and I like
that. I think that's such an appealing
factor of that car that you can just buy
a car and we were talking
about it earlier. It's just a car.
It's transport and it's
refreshing to have a car that's just transport
and that's not screened up
to the hills.
But you put into a slot in turn.
You were saying it's quite analog
that. Got a handbrake that you pull on
properly
so it doesn't roll through the garage door.
Yeah, so now that was good.
So it's been an interesting couple of days from car
wise but
Mr. Rigglesworth dropped
off one
magnet
last evening.
So way to raise
the real estate
values in our area. I reckon having a
beige TP
magnet GLX wagon in our driveway
and actually we've got to get going because
he's dropping the other one over tonight and I'm
running him home after the podcast.
But a dent man coming tomorrow to take
out a few little dents and little parking
dents and stuff out of those
cars. So I've got them lined
up.
745
my friend Andrew with his
box of barbecue tools is coming around to
do a little number on the parking
dents. I said do you want another one?
I said no.
No, thanks very much.
No, not just at the moment.
It's magnimonium
at the moment.
It's magma mayhem.
I'm consistently being asked by
Maddie's mum Sharon who's also my boss
no nepotism there
that did you secretly buy
a magnet Maddie?
I have not.
Because I have some guesses that maybe
you're a part owner in a magma.
No.
But she's constantly asked, he hasn't bought a
magnet has he?
She's quite wary of Magnifest.
It's still time.
How do I make this clear?
I won't be living
at home if I bring another car home.
Definitely if you're listening.
But it's not a long time car.
He's not buying a magnet.
He swears.
They're all temporary cars
they're not.
You've got one to drive.
You're driving someone else's.
I hope you don't fall in love with it
and end up buying it.
I will not.
It's one of Andrew's children.
You can drive the wasp full in love with that.
It would.
7999
I'm going to pay.
I'm happy
driving my Camry thank you very much.
I've been driving that in the last few days.
It's been great.
Camry.
So that's you David Prince.
Edit bunting.
All right.
Strap yourselves in.
There's been a few updates.
Update one.
The wasp is registered.
I repeat.
The wasp is registered.
Round of applause.
I did have to laugh.
When I drove it to my road worthy man
who was doing this particular job.
That on the way.
On the way there.
Literally as I got to the roller door of his business.
It was 730 in the morning.
I could see he was just raising the roller door.
As I rolled up the traction light came on
and the check engine light came on
and I went oh great.
That doesn't pass
road worthy if you've got those
warning lights on.
It's a very common issue on those gen 3
magnets where there's a solenoid that
controls both and it gets a bit jammy.
And it flicks them on.
As soon as you cycle the ignition it usually goes off
for a time and then it will eventually come
back unless you've sorted out that solenoid.
So we sort of know what it is anyway.
So I parked the car and then went in.
Oh morning.
Hey going.
Yeah good because I thought I'll just give it 30 seconds
or a minute.
And then I said oh which bay would
you like it in.
Normally I just barrel on in.
So they're like I'll bring it in this one.
Okay so then I went back out started it.
Oh clean slate good.
In the bay.
And yes I just got a message later on
saying yep come and pick it up.
That's all road worthy and done.
And I was like thank you very much.
So that's I've been driving that everywhere.
I've really been milking the wasp.
And it's behaving pretty well.
Track engine thing comes on every now and again
and every now and again it just doesn't.
So you know sticky solenoids.
That's what that is.
The 380 SEL went in
for a road worthy check that passed.
Really?
Yeah he said there's just one ball joint
top left that's got a little tear
in the boot that I'll replace.
But he goes other than that it's pretty good.
So which is sort of what I thought.
But still it's a 1984 car.
It's not new.
But it has developed this
I don't know if I mentioned the other weekend.
It's developed a top end sort of
you know there's a tick from somewhere.
Whether it's a sticky lifter
or a rocker or
the oil feed lines that feed the
lifters I'm not sure.
But it needs the rocker covers pulled off
and investigated and a bit like you David
that is a post-magnifest
job that I'll enjoy
doing during daylight savings time.
Other than that that car is sort of
fine I fixed a few things
I was in the halfway through fixing the
electric headrest the other day.
But again I just sort of packed it up and went
alright that's a future problem we'll deal with that.
What else?
I bought a Mirage
03
3-door hatch.
I thought of Eugene Barlow because it was a base
model with grey bumpers.
And I know you want to
style it in that configuration
but yeah this was a Mirage
done 48,000km from new
and then it saw this car
it was so
I mean I say was it's gone I sold it
but it was so clean
like it really was
like buying a new
you know a new car that's 20 years old.
I felt like opening that car it's a new car
you know it's it's
the plastics the car it had mats on
mats it two keys two
remotes like the original you know the fuel
consumption sticker that's still on the wind
screen like really really clean.
I mean I've seen
BMW demos with 3,000km
that are worse than this car
you know what I worked at.
So that lasted a day I was going to get at
Rejo and Road with him do all that stuff
but then my friend said you know what he just put it on
as it is and see if anyone bites
and some guy did bite
he had his mum had one he learnt to
drive in one he's like I want a cheap second car
and I said well this is this is one
out of the box you know you're not gonna
get one like that so yeah
I delivered that this morning
which was handy because on the same day
that I was a bit click happy buying the
Mirage I was also happy buying a Honda
Jazz same year
2003 so first gen jazz
in a manual 1.5
VTI so that's the good spec
Jazz ice blue because
they're all ice blue
really nice little car
that's done you know real high
Milo with 149 on it
but drives beautifully
you know cold air and just
lovely lovely little car so
I've just cleaned that and I might chuck that
online tonight and see if I get any bites on that
same thing it's unregistered so
if I have it for a few weeks I'll fix things
and then sell it with Regen Road worthy
but if someone wants it just
as is well they can have it
and that's that
Pajero the new old Pajero
that I bought the 02
that's still floating around somewhere
I put that in
to get a roadie check and that
I knew that needed some things and it wasn't too bad
so shocks all round
some rear control arm bushes
a windscreen polish the headlights
and an oil
oil pressure switch was leaking
oil and that's it
so not too bad you know that'll be a couple
of grand spend on it but that
once that's done in a detail that's
that'll be a very nice car yes David they've
swapped the driver's seat so that's
again a post magnifest
project I think
I'll delve back into that but that's got
Regen Road fib so that can sort of wait
what else
car wise have we done
oh the CRV
I left that somewhere for a week and then I went
and retrieved it so that's back with me
that's it
lovely
it's good to know how you doing
updates with you
me
no updates with the 31 but update
with the blade so we know
I had that little bit of damage
on the side skirt
did I already talk about this or not
no you've talked about the damage
you haven't talked about getting it repaired
okay cool I can't remember
everything's just flying by
so yeah
the damage tried a few places wouldn't do it
got to this place
had to go to his
home which isn't
too far away from where I live but usually
he can do mobile fixes
and stuff with scratches and dints and that
took it over to him
and
he completely fixed it
you would not even know
it had any damage whatsoever
even bits that were actually like
missing that had broken off
and disappeared he's fixed
and created a brand new
so
I don't know absolute wizard
with plastic and
the bead crack that ran through it
completely gone fixed
he asked me
who I went to
originally and said
and those people just said to replace it
and that's it I told him
and he said yeah he's not surprised
by most of those big companies because
I don't actually want to
do panel
beating anymore and it's a bit of
a dying art
he said if you go to a panel
beater if the guy looks like he's over 55
then you're set you're all good
something
something we're good at
David you're not a day over 21 so
don't be chewing him
don't go talking like that David
so he's
he's been doing it for 35 years
so he's got pretty good experience
got it done
in a day
and for a bloody good price too
that's awesome
so I couldn't highly recommend him
I'll do a little shout out at the end
for his company
definitely do that
so that's you Jim Barlow
how you doing man updates with you
yeah not too bad
apart from
returning to work obviously
I haven't really got any other car related
updates
Jim's one of those people I've noticed
the surname was always mentioned with the first name
yeah Jim Jim Barlow
like you had to say Jim it's always Jim Barlow
it's always work
yeah
it's always Jim Barlow
yeah I wonder
if that's like a single syllable
double syllable thing
yeah maybe
I mean I could call Edward
Tom Bunting
Jim
you really want
so no updates for you
not really
Jim, Rob's a die how are you Rob
good good good
what's happening dude
went on a road trip up to New South Wales
in my brand new
Ranger
so
done a sort of a work holiday
and went up to
the back of Golbin through
if you ever get a chance it won't be in caves
it's a very nice place to drive into
I've heard that
so it's very nice and it's sort of
basically the great divide
and you can go to
Janolan Caste from there
and then through Katoomer and
back down into Sydney
done a nice big road trip
about 2,000km car went well
so that was good
so Ford keep me
give me regular updates every week
about me transit and the buyback
so they're doing all the
they're buying it back
that's what they're looking at doing here
a buyback
so
they'll do all the figures and whatever they need to do
and look at all the history and how many times it's been in there
well this last time it's been in there
for 2 months now so it's good
but I've got a brand new Ranger
which is great I had 1500km on it
it's got about 4000km now
so
that's going alright
except I still don't have a key for the back trade
but I'm too scared to go back because they'll take it off me
that Mercedes
is progressing real slow
not getting much
traction there at all
I've been getting road wearbys
my son's Mercedes
he's sold it
but the guy didn't get finance
he's got to get new tyres
brakes, road wearbys before it
now it's sitting there
but that's
I suppose what happens when you try to sell a car privately
apparently
where is the SCC?
what part of Melbourne?
I drove past the Cannell shop yesterday with one sitting out the side
ready for paint
yeah no mine's in Ardea
no it wasn't there
there's two
the new Cinebun
one of the best buns in Melbourne apparently
does a Cinebun on this side of town?
yes
well not the Cinebun, it's the Cinebun
close enough
I'll have to get the details off you have to
no problems at all
I'll give you the address
it's pretty good
but apart from that
I haven't really done any major
works on any of the cars or servicing
no I haven't really driven any of the other cars to tell the truth
so the BMW's
parked up in the garage in Geelong
the F100's got a flat battery
I forgot
to put it back on trickle charge and kill the battery
the SCC
the F300 SC is getting out a bit
took it to a few car events here and there
just sort of like
northern girls and stuff like that
just to get it out and on the road
but in general
pretty much just ticking over, that's it
lovely, updates with me
I'm just trying to think, Camry
Camry yes, is here
we've been driving it
you haven't seen it Alan? No I haven't
you will see it
I got that leaky injector
taken out, so I took my other injectors
my old ones, the four remaining good ones
I took them to go get flowed and tested
and they all came back okay
thank you to the Alan Deep Singh over here for picking them up for me
always
happy to sneak out on company tour
really do appreciate that
got that put in
manifold off again
so
got what that put in, it is driving
superb, now I've got a few more things
I need to do to that car
got to get that recorded PDR
bars sprayed
and then mechanically
I want to give it the transit service
and then I've got all the hoses
ready to go, it's got to replace all the
heater hoses and radiator hoses
just to make sure
because they're a bit old and crusty
because I'm planning on taking this on a bit of a trip
next year
so once I can do all those things
I can make sure it's got a good clean bill of health
and off we go
but it's actually refreshing
hopping in that car
we were talking about earlier about the venue
having a key
this has got no button open or lock
it's just got a key
it's got no screens
or anything
I always say it's like being able to see with
Apple CarPlay Android Auto
but it's actually nice not to have that
and I've been listening to tapes
and the radio
I'm quite an old man now in my old
V6 Camry
on the inside he misses the Android Auto
a little bit
you're going to get yourself one of those portable screens
that you just stick on the windshield
and you plug into the cigarette lighter
you can just use your phone
and have a
holder and have a
FM transmitter to do your music
which I think I've got a spare one around somewhere
so that's been
going on with that
I've been driving that
I'll probably drive that for this week
and then put it away for a bit
but yeah it's looking really good that I've polished it
and ceramic coated it and did all those little things
so once I get the bars done
and that recorder
pulled out
with the little dintes
I think it'll be a really nice example
to be proud of
so yeah very keen
to do that
what else have I done with cars
I think that's pretty much it
on my end of cars gentlemen
so Rob's given us
the address of
Cinnabon
so Alam's going to have to
not to be confused with Cinnabon the chain
this is a private establishment
I believe that just does Cinnabons
they are getting sued by Cinnabons
are they actually
yeah they are
well it's not expected
let's be honest
but maybe we'll try and enjoy
one of their Cinnabon funds before they
get sued
into oblivion
so yeah
let's go and enjoy that
but I think that's pretty much all I've done
with cars
in a few or obviously next week
is Magna 40th
the big event
getting close Chad
once we get him back on the show we'll have a lot to talk about
hopefully we can get him there
where is Chad
he's got a family
a family member over
I thought he might be working on his car
well you know
it could well be
but there's plenty
it's all happening before Magna 40 guys
so
what's the hold up with Chad's car
transmission
needs to be resealed
I haven't talked to him
so I don't know what the trans people said about it
they said it's completely stuffed
completely stuffed
and Chad reckons he doesn't want to do it
that's why he's saying it
that's exactly right
because that trans was not completely stuffed
it drove perfectly
and that's what Chad said and Chad's very annoyed
so
so he's like
can you take it to someone else
like some other trans
things are in motion but we're trying to get him happening for him
watch this space
so gentlemen
I gave you guys some homework
which was to
affordable cars that are fun
under $20,000
I said for you guys to choose three
and have a couple honourable mentions if we get to them
now the reason why I've chosen this
I get asked quite a fair bit
what's a fun first car
or a fun car for not much money
and not much money these days
is
considering how much new cars are
it's $20,000
nowadays we could have said $10,000 or less
or even $5,000 early days
but now if you want to say not much money
unfortunately it's $20,000
to get something half
decent and fun
and they're like
oh that's
I mean using my first response is
well what's your budget
there is a car for every budget
and there is a car for
every personality
use
but if you want an SSJC for like $12,000
you've got to turn back the clock
and kind of go back a few years
probably close to 10 years
yeah
gone are the days when my mate couldn't sell his S15
turbo for $10,000
yeah
and now rolling shells are gone for $50,000
but we don't have Patrick on the show tonight
so what was that
Patrick
he's a busy man
he'll be back on soon don't worry
but yeah so
$20,000
it's a lot of money but then again it's not a lot of money
so
there is plenty of cars
I was going to make it hard for you guys
but putting them in categories and say
okay you need to mention a hot hatch
or sports event or whatever
but I'm just like no
people can consider fun cars
in whatever way
and if you can delve into
why you think it's a fun car and explain
absolutely all for that
so
gentlemen
$20,000
what are your picks for fun cars for $20,000
Scotty's not in his head
what are we thinking
okay this is a good start
this is a very good start
is my first one
I'm starting with a 2005
Honda
is he the integral type S
can I just say
these have been $20,000 forever
they were $20,000 when I was in high school
you know I think that's
they just don't go below that
and I've picked
this one because
I mean it's
this epitome of a fun car
especially
nice high revving
easy to maintain
there's different
looks that you can go for so if you want that
kind of ricer look you can do that
if not you can keep it stock and it still looks
beautiful you can
lower it you can put some nice rims on it
and that changes completely to another
style so
it's completely up to you with your taste
it's man-well
so we've got to have man-wells
because it makes it
even better and even more fun
it's even got the original
mats there looks very clean
this example
it's got a picture of the engine bay as well
big space is pretty good
just polish up
the headlights on it
you just polish up the headlights on it
and it'll be fine
I think that's the
the group M
intake on it so it's a bit
snazzy they're expensive intakes
so you got that
to go with it too
yeah
I mean I don't think anyone would
disagree with that one as a good
fun car to start with
to start us off
I'm going to sound like a complete old man
here but I actually prefer the way the
pre-facelifts look
with the indents and the bumpers
I think they're
you know I mean
this is still a nice looking car
but I just think that they looked a bit more aggressive
with the
cutouts in the bumpers
front and rear
that's a great choice though
I really like
these cars I remember talking to you guys
about
a lady that was showing us her house
had a gold
type S
it was lovely
I said to her I'm like this is a nice car
and she just looked at me and was like
what are you doing
but it was stunning
so yeah I get it
good first choice Scotty
does anyone disagree before I move on
that is a fun car
it's interesting they were type S
because you all know
the first ones that we got
the pre-facelift ones that were badge type R
were actually the type S in Japan
correct
which was
I think they lost a bit of face there
so the update
became the type S
which it actually was
but you also got an LSD
with that you still got rikaros
and I think you got an LSD as well
but
yeah
they weren't the full hog type R though
as you alluded to David
number two
coming though cons
no books previous owner lost them in a move
yeah
I've heard that a lot
yeah
have you heard that over the years David
oh yes it's right up there
this is my office yeah no
they're in the house somewhere we lost them
yeah yeah yeah
why are they in the house they shouldn't be in there
mine are in the house
because I don't leave them in the car
I don't want people to steal them so I take mine out of the car
who's stealing books Edward
books anyway
so second choice
you'll never get my books
I'll just break into your house I'll get your books
I know where you keep them
if you're putting the books with the car
then I'm okay with that at least the whole lot's gone
yeah
Scotty
machete or no machete when you go in
oh I mean I've got
something different instead that I've used
that I've mentioned before in previous podcasts
so
my second choice
is the WRX
good choice
preferably the GC8
but I mean you can still pick up some of the other
newer versions for under
20 grand as well so
but just this one just this example
but you can find other GC8s that might be around
about this price or cheaper and in
better condition but it was just
one that I quickly saw to put up
perfect fun car
you can do anything with it
it would be good if you
had a little bit of knowledge
to double check with these engines
and things like that or if you've got a good
mechanic then you set
keep it serviced
very regularly and you won't
have any dramas I'm sure
Alan can vouch for that
absolutely they are
fairly bulletproof if you look after them
simple as that this one
doesn't look like much has been
done to it it's fairly
fairly standard I'd probably replace
the steering wheel or something get that
it's got no mats
in it the bolsters got a split
they've been having smoothies in
that driver's seat and it's all stained
as I said this
is just one example but I'm saying there's
many out there that you can get around this price
or a bit cheaper yeah similar so this is just
this one's just
not the best looks like you just spent
more money on the engine bay to tidy up
and left everything else
in the back seat
people don't even vacuum
cars anymore in their car ads
no it's not
hard all the time they don't even
straighten the steering wheel or the floor mat or
vacuum it like what are you doing
sometimes they don't even bother really washing the car
yeah and Scottie
how much does this one
both of them so far that I've
shown a spot on
20 okay oh no this one's cheaper
17 sorry
I was trying to find all the ones just like
he said 20 so I'm just
find them maximum 20
it's like if someone gave me 20 grand
well I'm gonna use the whole lot aren't I
absolutely
alright number three
for something a little bit more
comfortable if you prefer
is the G6E
turbo
I love that colour that's one of my favourite colours
that they did who's the seller
of that car
it looks very much like a friend's
car got called James no
it's not the right car
I called James
is that right on 20 I can't see the price
from the there we go
19.5 okay with a roadie
with a road worthy as well
you can't go wrong with that
engines bullet proof
so as I was saying I kind of
chose this one as well
for something a little
bit different
because most of the time you think about fun
cars are kind of smaller cars and things
like that well I mean
some people like to just go out and
cruise
and this is perfect for it
and you'll be able to overtake anybody
you're not gonna have any dramas if you're
heading down the Nullar Ball
or anything like that
you'll easily overtake anything
that could be in your way
and you're not really gonna be afraid
of breaking down and things like that either
and if you do it's cheap to fix
yeah there's plenty of parts
it's a nice comfortable auto
I mean the ZF has been
well
what's the word
appreciated
over the time
that's kind of why I picked that one
you shouldn't have any dramas with it
and I thought I'd better throw in something
Aussie
so that's my third choice
honourable mention
I did have to
just quickly go through the two
yeah sure
I'll be quick
first one honourable mention is the 300 ZX
yeah that's that's
turbo one
it's a good question actually
it's NA but it's manual
okay
which isn't too bad
because it is still the target top
and you know
if you kind of want that
very sporty look
then you can't really go wrong with it
with those black wheels actually
yeah I really liked it
can't really fit in the back seat
but you know
I just want to say
they're sort of a bloaty looking car
they never really did it for me
but I think they've aged quite well
they were quite cool
when they were new
I remember they were cool when they were new
but now they just sort of look fat
no I'm a fan
I don't rate it
got plenty of stuff done to it
everything
like nothing stupid just things to
kind of look after it
and replaced a few
lights and bibs and bobs
but you know it's a nice clean example
and especially in manual
which is pretty tricky to find
and that's at 19
thousand
and then my last one
is the Toyota Altezza
RS600
so a few of these
are starting to pop up a little bit more
not many were made
not many were made
but it's kind of the last version
of the
the black top motor
which is
highly talked about
kind of competes with the
4AGE
and whatnot
that people talk about
but this one is the last version
um
yeah I mean
if you don't know much about them
please look them up
because if you're into a bit of track work
and stuff
perfect
I mean is that ACQ
Lexus IS200
it is but with a far better engine
what do you mean far better the 200 had a good motor
it was okay
it was way better
way better
what's something about this
it's a 4 cylinder
it's a 3SGE
but like really over work
don't talk codes to me what is it
it's a 4 cylinder
a 4 cylinder
so you're telling me this 4 cylinder is better than the Lexus 6 cylinder
absolutely it is
well I would never
I'd have the Lexus
that's in screams
I don't want to scream I want smooth
yeah it's smooth and screams
yeah
it's only a 4 hanger
you're working it too hard Scott
that's what it wants
it wants to be revved
I like that as a choice
I think that's a really nice
so it was just a little mention in there
because some people might want a car
that they might start doing some skid pan days
or track days
this one's perfect for you to drive in
do that and drive home
love the choice Scotty
so you had the
honour rules were the Altezza and the 300
you had
then the G60
Turbo
you had WRX
and the first one was the
Integra
type S
I think there's some really fun cars
and their good choices are actually
quite
quite a reliable choice too
I think you made some good decisions there
I thought because it's kind of
where the budget is
and I'm thinking people kind of want
that performance and stuff
but you also want
reliability if you're kind of spending
that money
so I'm kind of picturing not super
not super old people
that are bringing in tons of cash
I guess younger people that are
looking for that sporty touch
where they can buy these and get straight into the market
and have a bit of fun
yeah 100% completely agree
great choice
Edward what's on your list
I'll show you how to have fun
oh yes please
car number one you can now get
an ND
MX-5 for $20,000
can you get an ND for $20,000
that is the latest shape of MX-5
the earliest versions of that
I think they're sort of 2014 or something like that
but yes you can have one for $20,000
or very very close to
just look forward there was one for $20,000
now these are cars with $100,000
$110,000
it's nothing on an MX-5
that's a lot of fun
for not crazy money
and reliable fun
is that a $1,500
or a $2,000 later
the one I just looked at before
was let's have a little
Butcher's Hook Bear with me
search cars
we're just going to go clear
we're going to go back to that car
I didn't save it and I probably should have
model MX-5
$168 cars
if we go price loader high
$20,500
$120,000
in a $1.5
manual
the next closest one
is $22,000
a little bit more but $23,000
you're close with a bit of haggling
you'd be there
but yeah $20,000
I think it's a stunning looking car
a guy work with Scott 1
and in D
and it's just the $1.5
he reckons it's the best thing since sliced bread
he absolutely adores it
I drove one with
$100,000 at that a friend of ours had
as a loner
and I just
I've never felt so at home in a car so quickly
it just jumped in it
zoom zoom zoom up the street and I was like
zoom zoom see what I did there
by accident
but it was amazing and I just said
this thing if you had to daily something
that was a bit fun this is it
really good
the second car
is from Germany
it's a bit of a schlipper
and this is the M135
hatch
okay are they on the $20,000 now
yeah just
again quite close to around there
I've got a friend that bought one well under
$20,000 but he did get a very good deal
but they're sniffing around
that $20,000 mark now
so this is the 6 cylinder twin
turbo 3 liter motor
in the one series hatch
body which
does a few things number one
it's still rear wheel drive it's the last
one series rear wheel drive they ever did
so the chassis is fantastic in those
cars it really hammers
number two it's a bit of a
sleeper
because not everyone knows what that car is
if you know you know but if you just
parked your little grey or white one series hatch
at the shopping centre people are walking
past that car and going that's a weapon
they're just going yeah the one series hatch
whatever
number three it's quite practical the rear leg room
is not amazing because it's rear wheel drive
you lose a bit of accommodation based on that
but you can fold the seats down you can put roof racks
on it you know it's not
not a totally impractical car
and they sound fantastic
my friends one has
had quite a lot of mods done to it
they're one of those cars you can very
easily mod up or leave stock
and you know there's a lot of choices
in the aftermarket world of tweaks
you can do it it's a very tunable
platform very tunable platform as is the
Mx5 but I think more
the racers in the BMW
will resonate with tuning and doing
things and the third
car a bit like Scotty I decided to go a bit
more Aussie you know
an SS Commodore with a 5.7
or a 6 litre you know you can now
get those for 20 grand
so whether it's a ute or
a sedan or a statesman with the V8
any of those platforms you can
sort of take your pick but SS
means one thing and that is
V8
SS you know
and they were a bit
dinosaurian whatever but they sound
good and they go hard and you know
if that's your thing
there you go three different cars
20 grand a pop
spend 60
you can have them all I like that
I like those choices I like an SS
I think that's a good choice I think
like Scotty you've put in
your cruiser but still a bit of fun
to take on the weekends if you really want to
you've got your little sports car
and you've got a really cracking
like a 1-3 they're a bit of an
underdog aren't they
they're a bit of an underdog but
the boy races now are really
onto them like
my friend who's got this one
two of his other friends have also got them
you know they're kind of
and I know
actually another guy I went to his
birthday like a week ago
I said what are you driving down he goes oh I've got an M135
hatch but it's actually
an M2 I'm like what do you mean
and he goes well I took it to a
track day blew up the motor
found an M2 that had been
crashed
bought the motor and had that
put into the M135
so he's now running
M2 running gear and he said that motor
is just amazing and
it's basically kind of bolt in
because it's essentially
the same thing just
newer and goes harder so
you know people are doing things
like that to these hatches they're cheap enough now
that you can really have some fun and he
dailies that car takes it to the track and then also
dailies it so
you know it's not to be
sniffed at I hear
people are taking the
the BMW auto
transmissions out and putting them into all kinds
of other cars as well
yeah well they're very good like my mate's one
who bought the cheap one that's got all the mods
on it that's a ZF
you know 8 speed
auto the thing is a
weapon I drove it the other night and he's the same
guy Alex he's been on this podcast
he's got the M6 V10
this thing leaves the M6
for dead
now the M6 is not a slow car
but this
thing is just weapon and he
had a Volvo C30
hatch before that which is the Ford Focus
turbo 2.5 litre platform
which should probably get an honourable mention because
they are cheap very cheap yeah well
under 10 grand you're into a turbo
five cylinder Volvo C30
yeah so honourable mention
to those but he had that before
now I always thought that car was fast
you know he would go on the freeway on ramp
and make me feel sick and you know
this
this little one hatch
just it blows that out of the water
and you think
you think so much power out of this but it can
handle it the chassis is so good
so yeah I enjoyed
my driving that the other night that was a fun car
and his comment is always
the same whenever I drive his cars which is rare
but
whenever I drive his comment for this
oh wow this feels so much worse than the passenger seat
you know
and I'm like
there you go every time I'm with you
hammering hammering you know and I'm about
to vomit everywhere now you know
what it's like
the choice I like that a lot
actually I think that's
yeah I'm a fan
we'll go with
Jim
well I did have
an Integra before so I've made a slightly different
alteration
so that I'm not
my great minds think alike
so
first one I decided to pick was
a W124
300 TE
a T
yeah
so 300,000
K's
MBTECS interior
I don't think it comes with running in a red joe
but it is
I think
now Jim there was a criteria
of fun
it's got 8 seats
how is that not fun
8 seats
how is that not fun
it's a party
yeah first car is a
1990 W124
300 TE
so it's the 8 seater wagon
MBTECS interior
100,000 K's
and I think it's
my maths is being a bit weird but I think it's only 14 K
so
should allow a little bit of room to get
the road worthy done
you might get a road worthy for that
maybe hopefully
I probably have someone like Ed
who knows what they're talking about to go in with me
and make sure it's actually close to that
but
I can still get burnt Jim
yeah true true
so that was the
first one
it's a good choice
burgundy too
so the
David
I know Edwards
not a fan of those but anyway
I don't know
it makes me sick of my friends driving in the 135
or this
alright the next one
very very old
68 MG midget
with the
more desirable 1275
CCA series
that couldn't be my car
twin
car
with road worthy
wow
where is that car
that one is in
Alarat
we need to go through those photos
it looks fairly clean to me
that's exactly what I had
that exact car
really
the 13 years I had that
as you know I don't think that one
hang on stay there
on the transmission gearbox
tunnel
does it have a dent on the left
no it doesn't
that's my car
you had one of these Ed
so you were a fan weren't you
I was a fan I had that 13 years
a long time that car
they're a cracking little thing
they're an A series motor
same as a Mini and a Moog
and the 1275 very tunable
yeah it's all the fun
of British little
roti exhaust open air motoring
in just a shrunken down package
so how much is that Jim
that one is
I think it's
16.5
it's a lot of cars
that's pretty good buying
I've seen those
up towards 30 to 40 now
for a real schmick one
but 16.5
you're getting an Austin Healy vibe
for way less money
I told you I was on the show
my mate bought a
MG BGT
and
he absolutely loves it
and he paid 17 grand
it's a lot of classic sports car for the money
they are
because they made a lot of them
so they've always been
there's always MG B's around
and
that's helped their values
stay reasonably
affordable but
I was at Shannon's auctions years ago
with a friend
and we were looking at all the auction lots
and there was an Aston Martin DB5
DB6
the Sean Connery gold finger
style Aston
and it went for $600
then it's now probably 1.2
or something
but in the same auction was a
MG BGT
and that's
you just can't tell me that the Aston
is giving you
$600,000 more fun than the MG
but it just won't
it just won't
Jimmy you're trying to seduce me
if you're throwing a wagon
and now an MG midget that I love
let's see what the third car is
I think he's about to turn you off
because I know you don't like Italian cars
I probably will turn you off now
well
but hey, two out of three isn't too bad
so
third one
actually all of these
so far are Club Reger as well
third one is
DB6 as well
I actually adore these Jim
I really like these cars
if I had to
own an Alfa it would be this
this is what I would buy
so I was running up a few of them
this one has got a video of the engine running as well
it sounds very very smooth
$129,000
I think it comes with
roadworthy
the description is very very long
but basically they're not shallots owned by
a current member of the Alfa Americaa Club of Victoria
they've put $8,000 in it
because they wanted a manual Alfa
with the Busso V6
so it's got a Busso motor
yes and
has got a really tasteful
interior I think too
it's a beautiful color scheme
grey on red always works
it's quite classy and the interiors on these
they always look, I think they still
hold up quite well in terms of
design
when I was looking at the gauges
it reminded me very very much
of the first generation Mazda 3
yes
the needles point
to the bottom
obviously that's after
and probably not thoroughly related
but it was sort of similar
that one was nearly 19
so
just selling a bit different
that's a cracker I'm a fan
I mean I'm not seduced by it
but the color scheme and the condition are very good
I was
trying to find something that
I was more concerned about the condition than about
the
few other things I guess because that's more what I'm
concerned about and the history I find interesting
too obviously
yeah good looking car
friend of the show Michael Green
has one of those in that color combo
but the four cylinder
it's a beautiful car too
it's lovely
in silver with red and he's done
a beautiful job restoring it
it's a winner
I think that is
that for me out of all the alphas
that have come after it
it still looks good
you could probably with a little bit of a
nip and tuck probably sell out today
as a modern car it's aged really nicely
yeah
I've always been a fan of those
GTV V6 manual
absolutely
Ed would they bangle design?
I don't know maybe they were
there's a vague recollection of something like that
but maybe google that
but now
they designed the alpha judo
are they pen and farina?
I thought they were
yeah
I think so
I thought they were
the description is very very long
so we're trolling through it
that's a gorgeous example Jim
that's beautiful
he designed the Fiat Coupe around the same time
that five cylinder thing
yes the wacky looking Fiat Coupe
there's a lot of similarities
in this design
that swage line that runs
from the front wheel arches to the top of the boot
yeah there's a pin and farina
banger was known for designing the Fiat Coupe
and later for his work at BMW
I would own one
what's next?
I had two
joint special mentions
I'm not really sure if I can filter it out
bring them on
I'm not sure if it was fun necessarily
but I like the history
Austin Land Crab
the Austin AD
so
I like the conditions
I only had two owners from new
how much is this?
this is
eight and a half I think
very clean
original paint Edward
yeah I noticed
manual as well
now the engine in the Austin 800
is the same engine as in the MGB
so
it's
very very tunable as well
and a lot of people steal the
heads off those to put on the
MGB race motors because finding
non-cracked heads for MGB race cars
is hard
but I also like the
books that I had to
take back quite a long time
every stab in the book
has you seduced you again Edward?
I do like it
I was rather amused at the
3000 mile service interval
so I wouldn't be at the mechanic every month
how many
3000 miles is
5000 Ks
nothing
how many miles are on that now?
it says 29000
but I don't
probably one
I'd say so
judging by the driver's carpet
wear there
but I thought that was in quite some
exploration on the rear seat David
you could sort that out
just pop back to the driver's
view for me Jim
it's a nice colour scheme too
what's that?
it is a Byron car
very period
and then the other one which is very very different
I was thinking
comfortable saloon
with a bit of power
was Crown Magister
hmm
obviously
all right I can't have them all
great engine
just
for rolling along the highway
I think in supreme comfort
it also means too
with being just under 16 that you have got
money to redo the dashboard
which I don't think is bad in this one
but may potentially need doing
and all the advanced suspension
at some point
what happens to them do they crack?
they lift
yeah they go all yuck
it's quite a common thing with this
particular generation of Magister
obviously rear heated seats
rear recline seats
rear thumb shade as well
oh that's a lot of car for the money
here's the dashboard I want to see the
sticky one getting there
it's a little bit hard to see from here
but they tend to go a little bit
funny over in the corner here
you can really see it there
and I think that one's got
this particular example's got like 93,000 kms
up or something so
barely worn in for one you said
what motor is that running in
normal cylinder torque what is that
4.3 litre V8
from like the Lexus LS
and less 430 the same motor
yeah
well that is a lot of car
I like it Jim
I think that's a really nice selection
Rob hasn't shared
well there you go
technology
technology and
I've lost everything now
I lost you guys
alright delete control delete
let me try sharing again
so
I'm going to go for
two door manual and it has to be fun
mm-hmm
and what I've picked was the most
unreliable cars
which is a
Renault
Magane RS 275
Cup Premium
they are fun
they are very fun
201 kilowatts
yeah and it's only
20k drive away
they are one of the best
drives you can have
I've heard someone say
that's one of the most fun you can have
with your pants on
they are
awesome chassis great to drive
so that was
my number one most unreliable
but still fun
I haven't heard that they are that bad
in terms of reliability
just the name Renault makes me feel
like it's unreliable
I don't think they are that bad
not that bad
alright and my number two car
yeah is
a
a VRX
yeah
who not
HSVVXR
manual
we thought you were coming Rob
next week
so it's a manual it's only got 40k
on it
and that's got 171 kW
yeah they go well
so I was just looking at
power
2 door fun to drive
and it's 20k
another unreliable car
it was the choice between the RX8
which is unreliable not as much fun
they are unreliable yes
or
a 944 Porsche
1986 Porsche
944
I thought that would be fun
I've driven one of those
they are a very balanced car
they got a transverse rear
gearbox I think
yeah I think the box isn't that
transaxle yeah
they actually built it for Volkswagen I heard
somewhere
and Volkswagen said it was too expensive for us to build
so Porsche took it on and put their Porsche branding on it
but it was actually originally designed and built for Volkswagen
that's correct
for the 928 and it evolved into the 944
that is absolutely smart
my class used one
in top gear
and it was the most reliable one
it was yeah
well there you go
so maybe not so unreliable but 2 door
fun to drive, sporty
and they're all manual
and what engine capacity was
the 944 because they had a few 4 cylinders
well I just wanted a 2.5L
4 cylinder
but I also had a turbo one too
which was quite quick
they did
the turbos are worth a lot of money
yeah they're worth a bit more
so they were my cars
so the Porsche
and the Renault
and the HSV
VHR
now I like it, good choices
one array here don't we tonight
people complain oh you don't do consumer advice
this is consumer advice
ladies and gentlemen
I get asked all the time
about fun cars
but under 20 grand
and here it is
David Prince
so the first one
it's funny because there are themes going along
amongst us all
so I've also got
same brands that have been previously mentioned
but my first one is also a Porsche
which is
not expected I don't think
it's a real Porsche
Rob actually this one
it's a 98 Boxster
in Ocean Blue
it's auto
but you know I mean it's a bit of a posy car anyway
so auto is fine anyone can drive it
roof comes down
it's designed to be convertible
and it's $19,900
wow
very tidy at a dealer
in Woolamaloo in Sydney
and it's Ocean Blue it's a colour
not just silver
Ocean Blue with the tan interior
you see that's nice colour scheme
lovely colour scheme
$160,000
I would
there's only one Honda
in my collection another surprise for them
so that's certainly one
that came under
the radar and Rob it's a real Porsche
just in case you didn't pick up on me
just in case you didn't know Rob
he's just a bit of shade getting thrown
there
the next one
I should have mentioned the Wasp
so yeah look
I never really liked the Boxster
when they were new but I think
they have aged fairly gracefully
and they really are
quite iconic now
and quite playable too
but also
if you speak to a lot of people that are into them
they're quite robust like they're not a very
unreliable thing they're quite
good
then I also sort of thought
convertibles are a bit of a convertible thing
that's pretty cool
what about a
MX-5 and I actually went
under $20,000
so I still like $20,000
so of course I didn't find the ND
but I did find again a car that I
wasn't a huge fan of
early but has grown on me now
a sort of titanium
limited edition NC
and 105
K's at Penfold in Burwood
I could walk there to collect it
$20,000 with
the titanium grey with the red interior
what's the nice combo
very nice interior
very nice colour scheme
and yeah as we've said before
regarding the MX-5's bullet proof
the NC never gets any
love though it's actually
actually not it's not bad
it's not bad it's a good car
it's just that those around it were
so good it's sort of
shade but it's not
they actually feel pretty substantial too
compared to the early ones
I mean nothing will ever beat the character
an NB or an NA
the NBs felt a bit better but the NC
felt sort of a more
in some ways
was all more refined
and I was going to say robust
but I mean sort of substantial
really rather than robust
so that was number two
we've also
the Altezza
looked familiar because I actually
went rather than search
to go the full way to the budget
I thought of cars that I'd actually like
so I searched Lexus IS250 manuals
of which there's one in the country
IS250 here we go
IS250 manual
black
on black not wrapped
without the colour skin but hey you can wrap cars these days
30 on 30
11 grand
in Ivanhur
beautiful
so that was
that excited me
but of course the honourable mention
has got to be the one of one
if you look under Honda
and you go to in van
there is
in van
for sale in Australia
how much is that
that's $18,888
under
$7,000
wow
David can you please trade in that catty
seriously
David get it get it
those that happen to go to
Japan on a certain trip in September
2023 will remember the
fun we had at that massive deal
great at the Honda dealer
and
it's a silver one
it's a manual
so it's got the six speed gearbox
660cc
same as the N1 just no turbo
and look
that'd be awesome to work out
I could totally work out of that every day
what's the butt
the butt is that I don't share the road
with other K cars
I share the road in Melbourne
with other
rangers sorry Rob
that wasn't it
more stayed on Rob's
but you know like everything's huge
on the road
you know if you're on the Monash
at four o'clock in the afternoon
as I was this afternoon
you're a very small fish
in a very big sea
just want to add David everyone says to me
Dave must be the nicest guy and he is until now
this is
all this
all this niceness
all Rob
punching bags
I think you should start a
trend the people will see you in it
and they'll go wow that makes so much sense
and it'll start this K car trend
and what's it even my choice to drive a Ranger
either
it wasn't
so is that
have you bought the Ranger or is it a lone car
it's a lone car
oh okay okay you're still in
okay okay
I'll take back everything I said because that wasn't your choice
I apologize
we could just change this to my brother with his Ranger
he's true we'll do that
let me just mind it again
because I'm sure I've saved it here
and I'll send it through to the chat
it's cute as a button
what color is it
it's silver
all it needs is a nice set of wheels
and
good wheels silver might be added
what about a stripe
oh yeah a stripe would be cool too
graphic on silver might be nice
then show one car
there we go
that's so you David
you'd love it think of the fuel you'd save
and the servicing
costs your car is out of warranty now
nearly two months
almost and counting
yeah
yeah no it's
it's definitely a 2019 model
and it's done as I said under 7000 k's
yeah it's pretty good
I did put a bid today
on a Suzuki
Jimny
Jungle Green manual GLX
1.5 2023 model
with 9000 k's on it
and I just saw it on one of the platforms
and I just
I'll throw my hat in the ring
you know
I doubt I'll get it
for the amount I put on it
but hey
why not
actually it looked pretty cool with my
sun writing on it with my red and black sun writing
it looked great
oh David just do it you puddle around
anyway like you're fine
just do it and you're going to work
more from home maybe
just do it
anywhere
just buy the thing outright
you think of all the money you'll save on car payments
well also chicken dinner
chicken dinner
Rob if you've got a new member of the family it looks like
this is Bronson customs
Border Force pup
why's he there
is he investigating you
he's investigating you for drugs
he's
rapating the whole lot
what's he doing there
sorry
what's he doing there
we're foster carers
and then they go back into go to work
so they train for 12 to 18 months
and then they go to work
he's so cute
is he still in the training bit
but you don't have to train him
no
we just need to look after him and care for him
and take him for walks
and take him to public places and stuff like that
yeah right
he's very cute
we're a nice doggy
we had a teacher that did that
when I was at school at high school
and it would come to school with her and that
and I had the
so it is in training
that they give them to wear
it was really cool
like a cape
yeah exactly
I put myself out for foster care
if you could look after me
take me to the park
yeah take you to the park
take you for walks
if it needs you to people, socialise you
yeah I need that
he's very cute
can you send me some more photos
give Ed Pats
I'll write ya
we're watching a movie giving Pats
I'll write
alright so
I'll preface this, I made a rule
because I know Edward would say oh you picked the bloody Ford
no Fords
no
no cars that I own
yeah
and I want it to be different
okay so
that's cool
so let's go can you guys see
this
BMW Z4 manual road
star
30 and a half
I like this
and I like this colour too
do you know the name of this colour
it looks a bit Atlantis blue
but it's hard to tell in the shade there
it's a Linus Morissette blue
it's really really tidy
just over 100,000K
I don't mind the wheels he's putting out
I like the wheels and they're enough to make a wheel
they are
it looks really tidy
it's gonna have to make a strop race
you know cracking drive
awesome drive
you have to walk up to it
and get into it
oh David don't be like that
I think these
have aged quite nicely
what engine is it
it's the small one it's only the 2.5
2.3
is it a 2.3 or is it a
might be a 23i which was a 2.5
I think
Maldives blue it says
engine it's the 2.5
with 5L a year
so you know plenty of go
140K it's m54
straight 6
so smooth
really smooth engine
it's done 126,000K
goes well
faulty the roof only works
manually but that doesn't bother me
just put it up and down with your hand
and you know it's got some
roll bars and some pedals and things
and yeah I think that's
a lot of car for 13.5 grand
it's a great driving car
smooth plenty of power
I think they look good
I know some people
would like to beg to differ
they're sort of distinctive
you might not find it immediately pretty
but it's certainly got presence
and I kind of like that whole
old school long bonnet
rear wheel drive manual car
I think there's something in that
and I think for 13.5
that has to be a car that's going to go up in value
that has to be a classic
but also
something that's good to drive
and a bit enjoyable
and when I looked for Z4s
I've always had a hankering for Z4s
I looked at the Z4 M-coops first
and now my god they're expensive
there's not much difference between this and an M-coop
like the M-coops had better steering
and a few bits and pieces
it's pretty much 80 to 90%
of the car for a quarter of the price
and I think
that's a great
option for a little
two-seater sports car
my next choice
is a Saab 9.3
Viggan
that's nice
I like the color
I like the color too so I like a Viggan
I've always been a fan
actually before I go about the Viggan
when I looked up for manual Z4s
there was only nine and it was like
sorry there was three or four
and there was like 91 automatic
so I had to make sure I had to pick a manual
and that was the cheapest one
but this is
a 2193 Viggan Saab
again
Manwell 17.5 grand
I like the blue
I think it's a really nice color
it really makes the wheels pop and everything on this car
these were really cool
I know Ed you drove these when they were new
and they torques did like an absolute pig
but I think
they're super cool
she's done some work
she's done some work
I think there's only two Viggins for sale
all of the LCDs in the screens are working
yeah everything's working
it's a little five speed
it needs a bit of David Prince
it would be on that leather
but for the most part
it looks like it's just been used
but it's all there
all service history
and for 17.5
that's a cool bit of
how many kilowatts are there? I think they were 230 or 220
I think they were just over 200
there was something silly
not too many, 169
169
in a front drive chassis
it was a lot through the front wheels
pretty bit of torque, 350
tons of torque
I only want a 40
lightning blue hard tops between 99
and 2000 imported to Australia
there was only 4600 units worldwide
of Viggins, I loved every units vehicle
said to see it go
but yeah I think that's
a really
the Wasp is rarer, 1 of 20 mate
1 of 20, yeah no worries
I'm a fan of a Viggin, I think they're
a cool car
there's something cool about Saabs
I can't put my finger on why they're cool
but they're just a weird cool car
my last choice is
an SL
an R129
again very similar to
the Z4
but not as sporty
but
when I get into my 2
honourable mentions
you'll see another SL in there
there's a 500 in there
but this is a
later 94
it's about midlife SL3
20
this is the porn star
Mercedes
this is it
I love the way these
look, they're just such a beautiful
timeless design
I think Psycho's best
personally
he and his team worked wonders on this car
320 so slightly bigger
engine, this is a slightly later car
they did come
with a smaller size
6
this one has done 148
which is not a lot of K's
you're getting the more reliable
engine
the 5 litre V8s
are quite a bulletproof engine too
what do you want to say about that car?
this is for me, this is a cracker
if I had the money I would have bought this already
lovely original
car for SL3 20
there's no noisy car
there's the clincher
it says
from the trust of London
a lot of these cars always take care of it
car has some rise by selling lower than
overall price
but
imported in 2022
I think that's
a lot of car for the money
really, it's a cracker
definitely is
if that was an Aussie delivered car
would be quite a bit more than that
but I still think that's good buying at 19 grand
the colour is fantastic
it's called Borneight
yeah
they've spelt it wrong
in the ad
but yeah
it's a really nice colour that changes
in the light, sort of a warm greyy browny colour
and it's kind of got
creamy
not quite dovey interior
but
I watched a documentary about this from
Jason Camisa recently
and how these aren't a lot more than they are
is kind of ridiculous
because they are quite
quite a well engineered
over engineered
it was money no object kind of car
maybe I should get one of those
you've made me think of
I'm a big fan
my honourable mention is something that we haven't heard of much on the show
I probably see GT
I like these cars
this is Melissa Ong, this is what she had
so this has got 100,000 k, this is 18.5
virtually
in between
an i30 and an i20
but with the i20 1.6
turbo I believe it's the same engine
cracking little fun car
every time I've heard anybody speak about them
it's always positive
they always say how good of a drive they are
they're cracking to drive this, this, this, this
and I think
that would make a fun little hot hatch
it's not a full hot hatch, it's more of a warm hatch
but I still think that's great driving
and it still looks good, I think it's a good looking car
what's the power out of those
they're about 140 odd
kilowatts I think
from memory let me have a look
it's not too bad, but
150 kilowatts, there you go
it's the same as
Saab Vegan
it's the same as
i20 N
so 7 and a bit seconds to 100
not again
it's a nice fun little hatch
fun little car as a daily
I think that would be a perfect opportunity
and my other
honourable mention was
the SL500 at 20 grand
89 up in Queensland
this is quite
Queensland specced with those wheels
but it's quite a nice blue
I don't mind the interior
this is an earlier car obviously
I think 89 was the first year, first year forum
88 I think
okay, but yeah
so that's an SL500
245 kilos of power in
roadway condition
roof hydraulic seals are done, mechanically very good
has the hardtop roof included
which is quite hard to get
Brembo wheels
nearly retires
need to paint bonnet, but if it's in a roadway condition
and if they sell it with one
I mean it's a Queensland car
quite a nice blue
I actually don't mind the blue
and I like the blue coloured
soft top as well
I'm a fan
I think that would be great
and they sound great too
very expensive car new
very expensive car new
so they are my cars
gentlemen so
let's have a bit of a recap
we've given some consumer advice here
do we agree that some of these
are good options and some of these are bad
or are these all good options gentlemen
I think every single one
has got a place
I'm on board with all of them
I didn't think there's any that I'd look at
and go
there's no way or it doesn't fit
the bill that we're talking about
I agree with you
under 20 grand
there's nothing under 20 grand
I've got a note, you can get stuff under 20 grand
I think that Z4 would be a cracking
driver under 14 grand
so
really good buying there guys
there's some plenty of cars
if we had to choose you had the best selection
who would it be gentlemen and we can be honest
and say this person
or this person
I think gym selection was quite good
I'm a fan of that alpha
I think that alpha was stunning
that was a lovely example
I like gym selection
and the Austin 1800
I'm just toying with that
I think also too though
for everybody who's listening
there's just been such a broad selection
that if one didn't tick their block
something else would have
there's something for everybody
I think you're right Jim
I think in that list there's something for everybody
but Rob
your choice the summer's coming
spring, convertibles
absolutely, sun's out, roof's down
so we should
I know Dave is a fan of a convertible
he likes getting his
hair in the wind
well it is time for the quiz
but to our listeners
there you go
there are some options for you guys
so don't say we don't do any consumer advice
because we do
so I'll have to go out because he's got a committee meeting
but he did say bye to us all
so this is the cartel car quiz
there is 10 questions
plus some bonus questions as they usually
Jim did the quiz a couple weeks ago
did a really good job of it
let's crack on with question number 1
why were matchbox cars created?
Rob
because people couldn't afford real ones
Jim
because
the designer's daughter went to a school
where they were only allowed to use toys that could fit into a
matchbox and so he decided to try and
I think it was making a car fit into a matchbox
and I think it was a road roller
was the first example
that is absolutely correct Jim
well done
say that again the designer's daughter
went to
the designer's daughter went to a school
where the only toys they were allowed at school
had to be able to fit into a matchbox
oh
it was the 15th century
but yeah
what toy can you fit into a matchbox now?
like marbles
marbles
tick-tack
tick-tack
so yeah well done Jim you're on the board mate
Jim would you like a score check?
I'm all good
I'm going
it's anyone's game
question number 2 if I had an XR4ti
what would it be? David
for a score
incorrect
that's what I would have said David
an XR4ti
Jim
a fiesta
incorrect
Scott got in there
a festiva
incorrect
it is a 4
I'll give you that
focus
incorrect Rob
I think I know what it is now
Jim said it all
go Jim what it is
I feel so it's a Sierra
it is a Sierra
so it was a Sierra that was
I only saw it believe it in America
the XR4ti
but it was raced
it's got a weird history
it was raced in DTM
before they went to Sierra Cosworth's
but it was only ever sold in
in America
bonus question
Sierra's in America weren't sold as
Fords what were they sold as
Jim
was it like Mercer
yeah that's correct
they sold it as a Mercer
really interesting story
didn't sell well at all even though it got a lot of awards
question number 3
the word Kizashi
means what? David
I think it means sword
incorrect
I used to know what this was
Zuki
Kizashi
does it mean
cut
it does not
Rob was a blade
incorrect
maybe it means all drives small
sedan with good grip
not as good as Zero
yeah exactly
Sierra's sales
didn't sell well at all
anyone else before we move on
does it mean like smooth
doesn't
it means an omen or something great
is coming
not the car
that's something after it
question number 4
the video game
Forza Horizon 6
is set to be set in what country
Japan
Japan is absolutely correct
question number 5
what brand has announced they are wanting to
make a return to the Australian markets
brand
this was announced the other day
Jim
is it opal
they are planning on making another attempt
at the Australian market
I was at Melbourne's port last weekend
and saw an opal
Zafira taxi
what
I know
in Adelaide
in Adelaide
they are trying to get bits
no in Melbourne
they are trying to get bits for that
but it's an Astra running gear
it is
the latest Zafira
the new ones
the face totally new body shape
to the one that was sold here as a Holden Zafira
yeah right
I think they bought them into the country
opal fell over and then they sold them
off for next to nothing
pretty much which is leading to our bonus
question of the evening
while Rob's battling with his dog currently
how many cars did they sell
in their 11 months here on the Aussie market
I'll do
closest to for this one
David
743
743 says David
remember when they had the German exchange program
no one did
Ad
I'll vote 500
I'm going to say
1500
1500 is Scotty
1200 I'd say
1200 says Rob
and Jim
I'll say
1900
Jim you're closest they sold fewer than 3000
and
when they sold fewer than 3000
they didn't sell that in the time they were open
they sold most of them
when they were already out of business in Australia
for not much money
question number 6
Hyundai has offered
$35,000 off which model
in their lineup
that's a massive cut
Jim
the IONIX 6
because it's hideous and no one's buying it
Jim is on fire ladies and gentlemen
somebody
put him out
question number 7
sticking with Hyundai
Brazil adopted
what animal and turned him into a car salesman
David
it was a dog
they found a stray dog
that was hanging around the dealership and they
they turned him into a salesman
they gave him like a land yard and everything
and he was part of the
they
they named him after a car
what car in their lineup did they name him
it's current
it's a thing of one of the cars in their lineup
David
Kona
Ed
that's the wrong brand
it's got to be Hyundai
correct
iLoad
iLoad is incorrect
that would be funny
we still got
Rob, Scotty and Jim left to play
Rob, Excel
Excel
it's correct
I'd love to give you that
Santa Fe is incorrect
Scotty you're getting closer though
and Jim
Tucson is correct
they called him Tucson
what a good boy
who's a good boy
he shouldn't have been adopted by a car dealership
they called him K9
K9 yeah that's correct
yeah
that was a good Jim I like that
into that old Karen's
question number eight
Agro from Agro's car to Connection
do you guys remember Agro
yes
was on ads for
a certain car company
and offered a
factory bonus on which brand of cars
Ed
wasn't Nissan
it wasn't Nissan
Jim
it wasn't Toyota
I remember this ad really cleverly
it was quite a funny ad
just get Agro at him and I'll give you a discount
I don't remember it
I just can't remember the car
Scotty
Mitsubishi's correct Scotty well done
they did one
question number nine
according to Ford
one in how many ranges is sold
in Australia is a Raptor
Ed
one in four
one in four is incorrect
I'm gonna say one in five
incorrect
I'll give closest to but
one in ten
incorrect but keep going
one in eight
absolutely correct Rob one in eight
can you believe one in eight ranges
is a 90,000
sold body Raptor
it's insane
question number ten
last question of the evening
sticking with Ford
what model has finally
went out of production last week
Jim
Focus ST
Focus ST is correct it's the last one
rolled off the production line in Salui
in Germany
so that is the end of the Focus
Hot Hatch and I think Focus
is wrapping up in November
stop taking orders
from what it sounds like
score check
