Hello and welcome to the CarGuy Coffee Podcast.
This brew has been brought to you by Certified Solutionaries.
And if you want to consume more brews or want more information
about how to build your brand on our podcast
and want to see how you can sponsor the brew,
go to CarGuyCoffee.com.
Let's brew!
What's going on, CarGuy's and CarGuy's.
It's Lou Ramirez, the CarGuy.
And it's Fred Linnard, subprime hero.
And we are excited to be brewing solutions
on the CarGuy Coffee Podcast.
We are pumped up to really get things moving
in the right direction, to maybe add a little amplification
to what's happening inside of the industry
and soon to come.
And we are pumped up to be able to brew solutions
with another great solution that's
making things happen in the industry
and setting the stage for an awesome event
to happen in lovely Ohio.
Fred, what is popping with you today?
I'm excited to be out here.
We're a fun day of training with all these solutionaries.
Man, I was just right before the show,
I was showing all the different hats I wore today,
just between all the different amazing auto groups
and dealer partners that we have that are solutionaries
that are currently rising up across the nation,
literally across this nation.
And we're super blessed.
We get to meet a lot of great people on our journey.
We've been able to go to a lot of great places
and connect with some really great people.
I know today we're going to talk about a place
that we actually are not going to be at,
but man, we wish we could be.
We'll be there next year.
But we know that there's going to be
a lot of great people mastermining
and talking about the future of automotive
and how to get there faster
and how to get there better and most importantly together.
And I love that.
But it all starts with this guy.
This guy actually got a chance to interview us
a couple of weeks ago, which was really cool.
We sat down with him.
He's a great host when it comes to interviewing.
Great questions.
I felt right at ease.
We just went right through it.
It felt like that time went this,
is how fast that interview went.
So we're super excited to have him on the show
to not just talk about him,
talk about what's going on over at Reynolds and Reynolds.
And of course what's happening at a place
that's going to explode with energy soon
and be amplified with fun, right?
So I can't wait to talk about that.
We're going to get that going.
But bro, I'm pumped, man.
It's been a great weekend.
I'm ready to go to this week.
We're going to fly out just in a few hours.
We're going to be going to the beautiful state of Arizona
to go visit one of our dealer partners.
Man, honored, excited.
All the above's, so.
Yeah, I'm pumped up about it.
It's about to be hot out there, 110 degrees.
I'm excited to go out there
and enjoy all of that dry heat
that they talk about out there
inside of the Arizona area, but we are.
We're pumped up to go visit
some awesome people that we love seeing developed.
There's something that you need to see developed
or you want to stretch your team to go to the next level.
Make sure that you do reach out to us.
We are certified solutionaries
and we do dealership development all over the country.
And we definitely want to make sure
that you do take the steps to go to the next level
and empower your people to go to the next level.
Because at the end of the day,
our microphone, our tools, our techniques
are all designed to amplify each other.
But speaking of amplify,
we are lending a microphone today
to be able to put out a little bit of buzz
and get a little caffeination stirred up out there
about what is brewing with the awesome people
over at Reynolds and Reynolds
and we're pumped up to bring in an awesome interviewer.
I'm just saying, I was pretty impressed
by the way that he interviewed.
And we all know that I'm definitely not easy to impress,
but he is an incredible interviewer.
And we would have to say
that we've now found another person
where we have found and can say
on this quest to brew with the best,
we found somebody else that has uptick
the quality of CarGuy coffee.
And we're so thankful that he's in the cafe today,
brewing with you, with me,
but we got to get some more people inside of this show.
We got to get more people inside of this flow.
So do us a favor everybody and tag a CarGuy.
Tag a CarGuy and share, share, share, share, share, share.
Get the word out there.
Get people in here and let them know
that we are about to amplify things
and get things moving and grooving.
And we're going to welcome for the first time
on the CarGuy Coffee Podcast,
the one.
Tell me.
Greg.
Greg.
You.
You.
Greg.
Welcome to the party.
Man fellas, I got to get you to follow me around
everywhere I go so that you can intro me.
If I can get you on the ball diamond
or walking into the cafeteria
or going onto a stage somewhere,
like that would be ideal.
I love the intro.
Thank you so much.
We appreciate it.
We've heard that a time or two,
which you would probably definitely love us to do.
We'll just record it for you one time
and just play that as soon as you walk in the door at home.
Right?
Now ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages,
welcome home, daddy, right?
Or whatever it is because you want to welcome home.
We just get people pumped up.
But no, this show has always been about
just highlighting the awesome people
inside of the industry.
We are so thankful to be able to groove
with awesome people and also highlight
some of the great things that are going on
in the industry.
That this is definitely an industry
where we put our head down and we get to work.
That's one thing I do love about this industry
is we get to work, we do things.
But so seldom do the hard workers that are out there
get the chance to jump on a microphone,
be gassed up a little bit about how great they are
and the great things that they're doing.
But also when there's something special
that's going on,
we want to give a little attention to it.
But Greg, you are brewing some cool things.
We had the chance to watch some of the interviews
that you put out there.
Haven't seen ours ever.
I'm excited to see when it goes out there, everybody,
because it was a great interview.
It was really fun.
And again, he is a master interviewer
and it was great for us to be able to be on that show.
Thank you again for having us on there.
But welcome to the Car Guy Cafe.
We're so thankful to have you out here.
No, it's great to be here
and thank you for joining me.
It's funny because you can come across
as a good interviewer when you have good guests
and you guys bring the energy,
you got good stories.
Even right now, right?
Just the interviews so high,
you're coming right off of a training session
where some might be like,
I just need a minute.
You got to decompress, come down a notch,
and you're, nope, let's roll into the next thing.
Let's go.
I love the energy.
It makes the conversation a lot more fun, a lot easier.
That's what Car Guy Coffee is all about.
We are here to brew solutions,
not percolate problems and have a good time.
A coffee, a cup of coffee and a conversation
is what it's about.
And we're gonna get that going
and we're gonna talk about some really great stuff today
and it's all gonna start with you, brother.
Honored to have you on the cafe,
in the cafe with us to talk about all things
that are happening inside Greg's life.
So I want to just start with,
tell everybody a little bit more about you.
What drives you?
What's your purpose?
Professionally, I've been with Reynolds and Reynolds
for a little over 17 years.
And when you do the math on that,
I was told by multiple people
that joining a company that serves car dealerships
exclusively in May of 2008
might not have been the best career decision ever.
But let's give me a front row seat to see
just how fun of an industry this is,
how powerful car dealerships are,
how resilient they are,
as an industry,
it's just so fun to be a part of,
get to be a piece of this industry
because it just always goes forward,
always raises the bar.
So for me, I come to work every day
and I think this is for all of us at Reynolds,
but for me, I come to work every day
to try to help dealers be as successful as possible.
Those auto retailers are the center of the hub
when it comes to the automotive industry.
They're the touch point with the consumer,
they're the retailer, they're making the magic happen.
I want to and we collectively want to help dealers
be as successful as absolutely possible,
whatever their definition of success is.
To me, that's really at the core.
I love that.
What made you, I gotta ask,
what made you in May of 2008 make the,
and what'd you do before, I guess a quick little,
what'd you do before,
and what made you come to Reynolds?
Yeah, so I actually had a wholesale parts business.
So I was a parts wholesaler,
did that for quite a few years.
And when you're in the delivery business
and gas price is triple,
you start to take a step back and go,
man, okay, I got to either figure this out quick
or I got to find something else.
And it was one of the two,
so maybe a way to Reynolds
and it's been a fun ride ever since.
Heck yeah.
If there's one thing that we definitely love about Reynolds,
it's one, their commitment to innovation.
They literally have a mock dealership
inside of their headquarters,
which is it's phenomenal to see,
phenomenal to tour.
And it's very, really exciting.
And next level inside of being able to challenge
and have a conversation
and also add a little wow factor.
With that, I'm sure there's a whole lot of wow factor
that's cooking and brewing for this particular event,
knowing that you've had this much history with Reynolds
and come through seeing the resilience of the industry,
which we're very proud to say,
we are a resilient group of people.
There is something special about the adaptation
that happens with automotive
and the people inside of it.
But with that, there's so many different
in the last few years,
so many different innovations and pivots
that have had to have been made.
And we wanna know when people are considering
or knowing that they're on their way to this event,
what are some of the things
that they're gonna be looking forward to
hearing and speaking about?
Yeah, so Amplify is our annual retail summit
and there's a few key pieces to it
and there's a few different reasons people attend,
but usually it's a blend of some combination of them
and the first one,
and I think one of the most important,
certainly the tech will take center stage
throughout the second day,
but just the connection that you get to make with peers,
some people that you know already,
you get to see face to face,
some that you haven't met before,
some that maybe you know from a distance,
but being able to connect,
whether that's on the golf course
or at the reception dinner,
just being able to sit down,
have a conversation and either connect or reconnect
is really, I think, one of the biggest pieces.
You guys have been in this industry for a long time,
as well as anybody.
Those relationships are what makes this industry
so great too and being able to learn from each other,
being able to push each other to get better,
that's a huge part of this event.
And then obviously we have a lot of best practice sharing.
We actually are hosting a,
we call it the Automotive Amplifiers Contest,
we've done this in the past,
we're doing it again this year,
where we take submissions for best practices
from across the country,
from operators across the country,
and then we select five finalists,
we bring them in,
they present live to a panel of judges
and at the end of the day,
we'll select two winners.
So that event is always a huge highlight.
And then we'll showcase some of our tech as well,
which is a lot of fun,
a lot of new pieces to the puzzle this year.
Everybody will be able to see Rilo,
which is our parts delivery robot.
Everybody seems to be really excited about that.
The dealers that have been getting it in their store,
seeing absolutely amazing results.
So that's been a big home run for us
and being able to have some folks see that'll be great.
Also some new offerings coming out of our Spark AI data
layer, so basically Spark AI is our unified AI data layer
that powers all of our AI tools,
connecting all that information.
And we have a lot of really interesting things coming out.
One that we're gonna release at the show,
but it's the one that we've been working on really hard
and I couldn't be more excited for.
Wow.
I can tell there's a lot of things getting ready to happen.
You earlier, you mentioned some keynotes,
you talked about a lot of,
I think a lot of amazing things
that people are gonna get there and get excited about.
Again, Reynolds and Reynolds is your everything.
You can literally use them as your toolbox, right?
And that's what I love about you guys,
but you guys are always looking for ways
and you guys are open to them
just using pieces of your toolbox too.
It doesn't have to just be every product,
though it works better, it's a better ecosystem.
We know that and everything people who experience that do.
But every once in a while, somebody has a little,
I don't want this other one,
but we still work with them and we still make it work.
DMSs tend to be like a big thing.
What's been a big surprise for you over since last year,
like compared to over the last 12 months
with all this AI talk and all this stuff,
what's been a big surprise or maybe something new
that you're gonna see at this event
that is gonna be a big like,
this is what the next 12, 24 months is gonna look like?
I think, I don't know if surprise is the right word,
but we'll use it.
The biggest surprise to me, I think,
is the speed with which we've been able
to put out tools with artificial intelligence.
And just how quickly things are moving.
I was just on a call this morning,
we've demoed this new piece of artificial intelligence
that we're rolling out.
And to see it progress, literally in the last three weeks
and just the progress where historically,
when you build out software, it takes time.
It just does.
And especially when you're trying to build it
into a large ecosystem and making sure
that the framework's correct.
But a lot of these tools that we're building now
and seeing now, the development cycles are so fast,
which is really exciting because what that means
is every iteration gets better, right?
So it's not the old days when you had a release
and then you made it a little better
and you had another release.
It's constantly learning, constantly growing,
constantly getting better and more effective and more efficient.
And what that means is we continue to solve problems
at a faster and faster pace.
You identify, and we've all been in enough stores
to probably be able to pinpoint,
okay, here's a couple of things that we need to fix.
And when you can do that,
and then you can iterate on it over and over again
at a really rapid pace,
the end product and the speed that you can get there
is pretty amazing.
So that's the thing that's probably been
the most surprising is just the speed
we've been able to go the last 12 months, six months,
three weeks, like I mentioned.
That's a great answer.
That's a great answer.
And that's something that, with AI,
because it's not really that new,
but what is becoming more of the flow,
it's much like when cell phones
and the cell phone companies and the creators of it,
they had a particular goal to eventually have one
in everybody's hand that eventually meant,
yes, the children too, right?
They wanna make sure that they put one of these devices
inside of everybody's hand
and then begin to continue to upgrade them as time goes on.
And the AI side, it's been getting this tool
inside of everybody's hand to be able to recognize
how to use it and how it augments you
and speeds you up.
But this has created a huge landscape
or a huge canvas for new creativity, right?
I can only imagine the types of new ideas
or the new dreams that get popped open
that come from us, all humans, right?
Just because we have an entirely new tool.
Now, at the Amplify event,
and you're talking about these things
that are gonna be happening at the event,
I'm jealous, I'm over here, man.
I know, right?
We're doing a little bit of scheduling to get out there,
but we're so thankful.
Again, we're gonna be visiting
some awesome people inside of our ecosystem
that are doing some great things.
So we're so thankful to go visit them.
But for those that are going to be a part of it
or those that are gonna consider possibly
to be a part of it next year,
and we're definitely gonna be on the list
and make sure that we mark out the dates
to be part of it next year.
But what are some of the creativity parts
that do actually occur with all of these users
getting together and being able to speak about it?
Great question.
Yeah, so we have a lot of workshops,
especially in the afternoon,
so breakout sessions and their structure
in a way where there's something for everybody.
So we have user groups.
So if we have current customers that wanna come in
and just get a little bit better
for everything from post and a deal and accounting,
how to make that as efficient as possible.
Some people get really excited about that stuff.
That's one that I personally probably
wouldn't get that excited about,
but it's important and it matters.
And efficiency in the business office
is really at the forefront of where can we make gains
and efficiency, right?
Everything from that as far as a workshop goes
to we'll actually have,
I don't know if you guys know Jen Suzuki.
Oh yeah.
Yeah, so Jen is joining us.
She's gonna do a session on mastering
service BDC calls.
So we'll have some training like that
to e-contracting and going paperless.
So really all over the board,
as far as whether it's user group training
to process training to going paperless,
it's just something for everybody
and we'll have a good chunk of time broken out for that.
So typically what happens though is we end up
with, because obviously I get to sit
and talk with a lot of folks and they're like,
okay, so did you record these?
Can you send it to me later?
Cause I wanted to go to all of them
and I could only do three.
So that's usually the struggle is picking
which ones you want to go to,
but hopefully we have a good,
I know we have a good mix.
Hopefully it's a good mix for everybody there
and they can find a track that works best for them.
That's awesome.
Greg, you said something there,
which is it's interesting
because I do want to make sure
that we do give a little bit
of historical knowledge for people.
For those of us that know all the tech
that's inside of the industry
or the companies that we can go to
to achieve having that inside of our tech stack.
Some people don't know the history
of some of the companies.
Give us a little bit.
If you can give us a short snippet
of some of the history
of how Reynolds and Reynolds started
and then turned into this incredible
conglomerate of Boston technology.
All right, we'll see y'all.
We'll go back to the beginning.
Reynolds and Reynolds was founded in 1866.
For a little context,
that was one year after the civil war ended.
That's how long, yeah,
that's how long the company's been around.
It's pretty wild.
And it started with one guy
who he was in the newspaper business
and he decided he wanted a little more for his life.
So he came to the big city of Dayton, Ohio
and started a printing company.
Then he started printing business forms
and then through a lot of hard work
and dedication he grew the company.
And you fast forward,
I'm gonna skip a lot of the steps here, obviously,
but you fast forward and to the 1920s,
Reynolds started printing.
It was actually through somebody
who ended up owning Reynolds at one point,
R.H. Grant, who was the leader of sales
for General Motors.
He came to Reynolds and said,
all right, I'm having trouble.
I'm going around the country.
All these GM stores, Chevrolet at the time,
all these Chevrolet stores,
and I'm trying to figure out
how to get them to sell more cars,
but there's nothing I can compare.
There's no standard.
There's no financial statement.
There's no metrics I can look at across the board.
He said, I need your help.
So Reynolds developed a standard financial statement
for Chevrolet dealers.
R.H. Grant rolled it out
across all of the dealerships in the U.S.
and he started basically having comparable metrics
to look at.
So you can point to somebody and say,
hey, you're doing poorly in this
or you're doing well in this.
So he developed benchmarks.
And over the course of the next five, seven years,
Chevrolet ultimately became the best selling vehicle
in the U.S. overtaking Ford.
And it was directly pointed to R.H. Grant's leadership.
When you fast forward,
R.H. Grant then ends up buying Reynolds and Reynolds
later on in his life.
And you go into the 60s
and we start working toward software
and developing really batch processing.
And then that moved into the DMS world.
And then the last 15, 20 years
has just been through the roof
as far as, and this is across the board.
This isn't just Reynolds, right?
But what technology has been able to do
over the last couple of decades
is absolutely astounding.
And we've really built out
and this is over the course of time
but built out a single system
that's focused on efficiency and profitability.
And from there, we're gonna build everything up, right?
And we talked about now
we're getting into this world of artificial intelligence
and being able to build out tools
that really help salespeople be more efficient
help technicians be more productive.
And I don't know,
you can probably hear the excitement of my voice.
I just get so excited about our progress
and where we're going, what's possible.
But that's the really brief, long history
of Reynolds and Reynolds.
I think that's great.
What's amazing to hear the evolution
how it never stayed the same
how uncomfortable was what made the difference, right?
And the constant way of doing that.
Cause if they were still doing what they started doing
Reynolds and Reynolds would not be around anymore.
It would have fell out.
They would have not never got the gusto
but it all started with the idea of I want more
the, that eat those.
I want, there's here, I have this
but I know there's more for us.
There's more opportunity.
If we just look around for it
if we just do something slightly different
we become innovative.
And I love that.
And that's a great story.
I love that you're excited to tell that story.
You got me excited about the story.
I think that too many dealers in this world right now
are getting stuck in that what always worked mode.
Right?
If they, if you think about all the different people
who've been leaders inside Reynolds and Reynolds
if they were stuck in that again
they wouldn't be where they're at now.
It's important that we get outside of that
and we look for ways to get breakthrough.
What would be some advice that you would give dealers?
Hey, look, I know that you've always done it a certain way
but come to our event for one
learn how other people are doing what you're doing
but breakthrough don't do it the way you always did
it look for ways that are different.
What kind of advice would you give?
How would you give them that advice?
Yeah, so I hate being prescriptive, right?
So I try not to set myself up
somebody maybe not giving advice
but I can speak from my experience
and this is for a lot of people I'm sure
but ask a lot of questions, right?
Even if it seems like a stupid question
just have somebody start talking, ask the question
and you never know what you're gonna uncover.
It might be something that just solidifies
what you're doing, verifies what you're doing
it might be something that gets you to think
about it differently or on the flip side of it
maybe they start sharing something
and you have experience doing that
and you say, hey, that worked for me because of this
or that didn't work for me because of this
and you end up in a dialogue, right?
And once you're in a dialogue and a conversation
that's when the magic happens.
So just asking questions, reaching out
making those connections, the more conversations you can have
that I think the better off you're gonna be
because you're gonna learn one way or the other
either your perspective's right, your perspective's wrong
or we all need to learn and grow a little bit
which is usually what typically happens.
Yeah, and that's something that
we definitely love doing at any of the masterminds
anytime that you do bring people together
that are using the tool
that are engaging inside of the challenges
and can take a look at benchmarks.
It's awesome the way that you did explain that
because benchmarks are critical
being able to know what other people are doing
whether it's in a similar market as yours
or a completely different one
but being able to have something to gauge yourself
is the best way for you to ever track your growth.
If you don't know where it is that you're at
and where it is that you wanna go
you're never gonna get to where it is
that you're meant to go
and a company like Reynolds and Reynolds
getting where it is that they are
it's just, it's mind blowing to think
if we had to explain to the creators
and those that initially put their foot to the pavement
and went door to door or went and connected their system
or this solution to dealers in the past
and said, there's gonna be a day we go paperless.
Could you imagine what their thought were of that?
No, seriously, we're going paperless one day
this is the future, right?
And then be like, what?
That doesn't even make sense.
And now we're like, is there even paper
inside of the dealership anymore?
Should we even have hard paper
unless somebody's printing steps
or doing stuff like that?
Where is the paper from the big digital signing tables
to the signing pads?
Everything is moving inside of a direction
that is so much less paper filled
but it doesn't change that
we're always turning the page on something new.
We're always rewriting what it is that was awesome
and great just a few years ago
and now is outdated and obsolete.
And people like Reynolds and Reynolds
people like the dealers are gonna be
at this particular event
are just an example of the absolute dedication
that there is inside of this industry
to constantly get better
but also not be left behind anymore.
I believe that there was a time
where so many got left behind
inside of the technology sprint forward
that had to happen after COVID occurred, right?
When the COVID scenario occurred
so much of a leap forward happened
when it came to technology
and you guys were right there on the forefront of it.
Now you guys were all on the post COVID time, right?
There's like a stamp on history
that is pre COVID, post COVID
and now as we're seeing things get to a point
where dealers and everybody in the industry
is recognizing there's always gonna be crazy challenges
and for you Greg, you came in
at one of the scariest moments
we personally seen inside of the industry, right?
When dealerships were shutting down
banks were cutting them off, right?
Insurance companies were going under
and all of that stuff was happening
and we still are here.
I'm still proud to say we still here
and we're still people for that
but speaking of be here
there are people that can be there
and be at that event
but we wanna make sure
for those of you that are listening
for those of you that are watching
that still have time to get to the event
it is going to be at the Ritz Carlton
in Las Colinas, Dallas, Texas
man, I wanna go to the Ritz Carlton, that'd be awesome
but it's gonna be August 18th through the 19th
and if you wanna get registered
go to rayray.com backslash, amplify
and forward slash, forward slash, forward slash,
backslash, it's a slash guys, right?
Make sure that you get there on the slash
mark the time, get yourself there
if you do have the time
make sure that you do get there
there's gonna be so much fun.
If you do, you're right
Greg gotta say, gotta ask
if there's one thing that you can tell somebody
about this event
if there's a dealer that's already registered
but hasn't bought their airline ticket yet
hasn't got their hotel
but you know the deal
they always go to the last second
but they're like, okay maybe I should
we need to get this month going
what's one reason why they should go?
For me, I get real geeked out
about seeing what's possible with the technology
so to me personally
it's come see what's new
what's awesome with technology
everything from I mentioned Rilo to
all of our AI tools to Curator
which is a goobagoo CDP product
at its next level
it's changing the game there
I get really excited about that stuff
even if it's not for you today
just knowing what's there
having something to compare to
is always important
so that's probably what I lean towards
but I mentioned it before
and I'll say it again
the connections are probably the most important piece
being able to connect
with whether it's folks at Reynolds
whether it's other dealers
whether it's OEMs
whoever being able to connect with the industry
having one more touch point
always makes a difference
every time
I don't think there's ever an instance
when we get together and we say
and that just wasn't a good use of time
but think about every event you've ever been to
it's you know what
I was debating going
I wasn't sure
but you know what
I'm really glad I did
because I got to hang out with X, Y and Z
and that's really what it's gonna boil down to
I think for this event
like so many others
is the opportunity to connect
outweighs pretty much
and get a potential negative
Okay and Greg just one last question
I got to ask
and this could be for some of the people
that are considering making the migration
to Reynolds and Reynolds
but have yet to do
is this an open place for them to come
see, feel, learn, touch
and maybe get a little bit of taste
of what they could be stepping into?
100%
yeah absolutely
the entire industry is welcome
and we have looking at registration numbers
we have a huge number of dealers
that aren't currently on our Reynolds DMS
that are joining us
so we're happy to have them
happy to talk
it's a great opportunity to see things
and it's maybe a little different than
it's so funny to think about an NADA
or an event like that
that are so important
and staples in our industry
if I'm a customer
and I'm going into a booth of somebody else
then who's gonna see me
and is it gonna start the whispers
and so you don't have to worry about that stuff
right there's no worries there
so it's a
I don't know I'll call it a less stressful way
to get a look
and see if it's a fit for you
so absolutely everybody's welcome
thank you
and a great time to see behind the curtain
you're gonna love it
I'm telling you all
you're definitely gonna love it
and when you get the chance to get out there
and we're gonna love it
when we finally get the chance to get out there too
but we're getting so super jealous
of each and every one of you that have registered
make sure that you do buy your tickets
make sure that you get out there
make sure that you bring your notepads
your notebooks
and you collect a whole lot of contact
contacts
and a lot of new friends
and build those relationships
that build this forward
