And I'm your host Jay Finning, first and foremost, happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there, in the father's pulling double duty, you know, last year, one of my biggest episodes with the Father's Day episode and I don't think I really spent much time on Mother's Day or Mother's just important to me is hopefully anyone's mother.

If you're fortunate enough to have a mother, some people are raised without a mother. And my relationship with my

mother is really good. However, she was always a

disciplinarian in my house. It wasn't my father, my father

wasn't home a lot. He travelled for work, most of

the time and so my mother took care of my brother and I, when I was younger, of course, really small.

My mother is who I'd always run to.

I remember being in the rocking chair crying and her comforting me. And I think that's it's easy for

people to say, well that's the mother's role.

The mother is the nurture and the father is a disciplinarian and Again, my mother was kind of both mom and I we I helped her cook. Help her do stuff around the

house, but we got into it a lot as well.

And I was a smart mouth ass little kid in my mother of anybody who listens to. This actually knows my mother.

She's pretty rigid. She's very matter-of-fact and if

you know me, well, I may seem that way.

I have to believe a lot of that comes from her.

In fact my my kids, my wife are like whoo come on across your mom. Yeah cuz she Is Cutthroat, but

she's a great woman and I think you don't really appreciate it.

I didn't really appreciate it until I became older, of course.

Right. And then of course, listen to

this. It's easy to say, well yeah, do

we never do appreciate it too. Were older.

But I don't know. A lot of you you're there like

this or you've had a lot of friends like this where their mother was talking to him all that all the time.

Every day. My wife cannot go a day without

talking to her mother. I mean she lives with us.

But when she didn't It was just part of her life.

My wife has a huge family. I have almost no family.

We don't do family reunions anymore and with the passing of my father last October. Our family is just getting

smaller, but her family structure is so strong.

There's just so many people and it was so foreign to her to be with someone. Like me, who may have talked to,

my parents, may have talked to my mother once a week, once a month. In fact, if I were to call my

mother more than once a week, she even said, This my mother said yeah. If you talk to me all that time,

I'd ask what's going on and why are you calling me?

That's my that's my mother. But she's still up there in

Minnesota with my brother and happy Mother's Day to her.

And again, happy Mother's Day to all of you and I really appreciate her. I have to say, a lot of my

personality comes from the way, I was raised.

I think my region is comes from her, and my compassion comes from my father and that's how I was raised.

I remember I think about my mother someone who didn't support me in the ways. I felt like I needed to be

supported or my father on that on that side he did.

But she did so much more and I just didn't realize it, she used to ask me. Where do you think you're going

to be when you grow up? I said I'd be an artist and she

goes oh yeah, sure. And it's easy to say damn that's

fucked up. I say this no one knows your

kids like, you know your kids no one knows you like your parents or your parents. And so I was obviously not

showing that I really had interest in too much of anything asset, then I drew all day and went to school and had great, you know, great grades in art but I sucked in English in math science. Everything else and so it's easy

to say. Oh yeah, right.

And it challenged you it challenges you.

But she's from a small town. My mother is a small town woman

raised in a town of less than 500.

In fact is like 430, the school was kindergarten through graduation high school. Everybody knew everybody and

times are different times or different parts of the world of different and that's small town, Minnesota.

So happy Mother's Day Mom, happy Mother's Day to my mother-in-law. Happy Mother's Day, to my wife,

my daughter, all you mothers out there.

Like I said in the beginning, Coming up in a little bit, the horsepower, our podcast joins with Andy imhoff and Cory Saint Clair, really good podcast. I really like listener that one

because it's cars with a lot more cars.

In this one, good sound quality, good comedy, and you learn a lot about things that things that don't seem to really matter as much. But it's valuable information.

These guys are like an encyclopedia for cars that aren't Ferraris, and it's kind of a call back to yesteryear when I was first getting into cars in my early 20s 30s.

Always one or two people in your group that just, they knew everything there. Like Jesse, they're like Jesse

on Fast and Furious tour. The cars, talk to them when they

work on them and they can't concentrate on anything else.

Everybody has a genius like that?

Like both these guys know, they know a lot.

And so that's coming up in a few minutes, but real quick.

So I'm recording this on Sunday, May 9th Mother's day yesterday.

I went to a car event with Byron as Byron.

Jones trays AMG, he was just on here, a couple episodes ago in studio. We're coming back from a car

event and we get The freeway and you know we all do this thing where you start to get on the highway and it's like three miles to the next exit and you just punch it.

You look around, doesn't seem to be any traffic in your lane coming up behind you. So you can merge in front of you

and you just punch it. I even put my fingers out the

window. Some of you have seen this video

on my Instagram page at na-2 NSX.

I counted down, three, two, one. And I just gunned it in the car,

just screaming, MX Gear room, I look in my rearview and I have this big place. Uma black smoke that came out of

the NSX because the turbo just hasn't been let loose in a while and I noticed Byron's way back there but I also notice a motorcycle switching lanes and coming up and I think oh shit.

Is that a? Is that a cop?

Oh my God. Totally and officer comes

pulling on by this point. I mean I wasn't just gonna get I

wasn't even out of traffic. But I got up to probably 120 125

from like an 80, pull getting on the highway or 70 or whatever.

It was fast enough to switch into fourth gear.

And it's a motorcycle cop and I'm thinking.

Aw, fuck. He pulls up next to me.

Whoop. Well, looks over at me.

I look at him and I just do mouth.

I just said I'm so sorry. And gave like this big Grimace

on my face grin kind of like, oops, guess that caught my hand in the candy jar and he looks over at me, kind of shakes, his head points down, like, slow down.

Keep that shit low and just pulled off.

So, fucking lucky speaking of officers, there's an article where police departments are starting to switch over to using Tesla's because there are 30% more efficient.

Apparently this has been happening with precincts around the United States, but now it's made the news.

And I think it's kind of it's kind of weird, right?

So when you're out there and you're driving and you see somebody get pulled over by a minivan, first thing you think is, that's not fair cops pull over playing dirty.

That's dirty. Like at least give me an

opportunity to feel like you're an unmarked car but don't pull me over in a minivan. Don't pull me over and a pickup

truck but when you see the Tesla you look at it and you think wow, that's kind of cool. And it's weird how that kind of

works in our minds. And it makes sense for certain

situations because the Tesla is the batteries are running low if you just ride them hard. But I would have to believe

that. Not every officer out there is

just riding hard all the time. Just probably a few times a day.

Otherwise probably just sitting around waiting for people to pull them over tickets or just patrolling the neighborhood's.

Doing whatever it is they do because these weren't necessarily unmarked cars. These were Tesla's, put the

lights, and the badging, on the side, Let me know.

I do commercials I do audiobooks now, granted, most of it is self-help and I try not to sound too suicide e.

He really gets his point across And I think that, if you listen to the hard parking podcast, you are, you're probably like, you know, how only fans has like the top 1%, top 5%, but there are so many people on only fans now that it's like you're in the top point five percent, you're in the top one percent J, your podcast is in the top point zero, one percent of podcast that I listen to so many podcasts deals in 2, 3 or 4.

I'll take it. I'll actually go podcast by a

felon named to row geoghan. I don't know if you guys know

him or not, he's a DMT and his, and his done, some some fighting, you know, in his past and apparently he's pretty good.

But the dudes, real, real short. And so, you know, the short man

complex is a little bit of problem Coy listens to a couple different podcast but I think mostly he just listens to the horsepower. Our, I like to hear the sound of

my own voice. Yeah.

sad. However, as I get older, I like

slowly, drink less, and less soda.

You know, it's like so this is raspberry bubbly water.

I can just almost taste that it walked past this can of water.

It's like a raspberry had covid-19 and sneezed into the glass. If we go back a year, I'm not

drinking this. I don't know what.

And but I wanted something that I could just open up the, the, the beer cooler downstairs and pull out and chug.

So whether it's a Dos Equis or carbonated water.

It's something that wouldn't, you know, immediately put me on my ass. So I've actually been finding

myself a little bit irritated by the yeast recently and beer, which is a shame because I love beer.

I actually started brewing beer but it hasn't really gone too far because it just it messes with my system a little bit too much. So hard, alcohol is kind of

where I'm at. That's, that's the happy medium

for Me when's the last time you heard that koi pain pills and alcohol is my happy medium? Yeah I'm pretty sure that's like

you're halfway to Charlie Sheen. You know you're you're on the

downhill descent. Sure, I don't exactly have the

tigers blood but we're moving up that way.

Definitely a downhill Glide plane that you're right that way. I look at it, if I'm not

sleeping on a park bench with a needle hand on my arm, I'm doing okay or you're not in Portland. Well, there is that.

So I have to ask you something Jay, since we're here and we're doing this thing. How is that non-specified

problem in Arizona? Because here in Oregon, it's

real bad. Son, we talked to needles, or

covid, needles, homeless, that sort of thing.

Yeah. I think I think Portlandia might

be. It's like the tourist

destination for the homeless. It's like the homeless.

Yeah. It's like the homeless and like

Phoenix. Like we gotta get out of here,

we're I got a honey, we got take a vacation, we got, go to Portland for a while, just lay out in the middle of the, you know, the parks and shit. When I was there, Arizona for

the winters, if I'm honest because they are, you homeless.

Oh, I mean, I could be the night's young.

I just feel like the rain is a little bit too, when what I wouldn't want to be laying in the rain, if I was homeless, that's that's my whole thing, you know, I think I would like to, if I were homeless, I would definitely vacation in Arizona.

Hmm. I don't think We have the near I

think because the extreme heat, we don't have the issues that, you know, you see starting over the West Coast, you know, once you start go to a, you know, Los Angeles, you only have blocks and blocks of tents overpasses. You start getting up into

Oakland and that beautiful city behind you San Francisco, you know, it's the same deal, and as you get further up to bring you guys, I think that's probably the peak.

He's not exactly, like a snowbird.

That's what they call. Like retired people, you know,

that go to warmer weather states in the wintertime or more snow bums. No, see I work in Port 1.

I do directional, horizontal directional drilling.

So pipes under roads and whatnot.

So I'm down there with the people a lot of times and I see see this homelessness on another level and it is for those who haven't been up close to it is unreal.

Like, it's like you're in another country for a moment.

I mean, it's it's something else.

Actually starting a program because we want to bring more awareness to the homeless problem here in Oregon.

It's called a bum rush 2000 in. This is a real thing.

We're actually going to do this. So the rules for the bum-rush

2000 or BR 2 K, as we like to call it is, you have to have a shopping cart. It has to have one wheel that

both powers and breaks. Okay?

You have to have sorry koi what's it called thing on the back. Back that attaches to the

shopping cart page, stand on. There's a name for it and I

forget now. Yeah, you see.

It has to be a standing platform.

You have to be standing behind the shopping cart.

You need to look like, you're pushing the shopping cart, right? So whether you achieve that by

standing on the back of shopping cart, or my preferred method is going to be having basically like a tiller set up on the back, where there's two wheels one on either side and then I'm standing on a platform and that's attached to the shopping cart. We are going to make this

happen. It is a real thing.

We've already got our shopping carts.

Probably have half a dozen people who are already working on these and so rule number one is it has to look like you're pushing the shopping cart. Rule number two is you have to

look the part. Because obviously, if we're

doing this race in a very public area, we need to be able to blend in. If you understand what I'm

talking about, again needs to be seeing wheel drive needs to have the single wheel brake. I'm not limiting anything like

the top speed. I'm not limiting safety,

anything like that. Although I would recommend that

you wear a helmet. I plan on getting the smallest

helmet. I can possibly fit in the maybe

fitting like a KFC chicken Bucket over the top.

Weren't you talking about? Maybe wrapping years in tinfoil?

Yeah, I'm gonna go full like, armadillo tinfoil hat but I don't see. I don't think he's gonna do the

antennas. I think.

Koi is going to actually do a swan that's folded out of the tin foil on his helmet. And yeah, we're planning on

doing a one or two mile race. We're going to have

predetermined start and stop and we plan on making this.

Series by the way of already reached out and talk to a local go-kart track owner. I don't want to disclose too

much, but we are planning on making this a racing series and we are going to bring in at what are we got signed on so far, 11, 12 people so far. We got about 12 people that

interested we want to during the gamblers, mmm, at the party area. You know, the meeting Rally

Point, we'd like to set it up and do some races, right?

So with the Gambler, they have this thing they call The hooptie X and that's where you essentially take your Gambler car on a rally course. And then of course, they have

the mini bike racing. That's does completely separate

from The Gambler do. Yeah, that's completely separate

from the gambler but they do call it a hoopty race, right?

I think it's just the gay, a minibike.

Is it just to give everybody the hooptie race is just the hoop DX or hooptie cross little running on they kind of called both but it's like a two-mile basically. Rally course either way we plan

on doing a gambler transient X which is Be a lot of fun.

It's going to be us, racing are shopping carts across this BMX track that they normally have the, a mini bikes on.

How'd you get started? Well, so Quinn, I've been doing

a podcast for a long time called boost blues and barbecue.

Yep. And it was our Dream to kind of

do a car podcast. We started out doing boost boost

barbecue because it was Cars. It was Alcohol.

It was barbecue. We felt like we'd have a larger

range of people that we hit. It wasn't until later that we

realized that. What's the saying coin niches

make riches? Yeah, we realized that we had

frowned too wide of a net and we're, we're essentially losing listeners because somebody's who's signing on Just for cars?

Doesn't care about the booze with alcohol.

You know, he may not listen and then vice versa.

Somebody just interested in barbecue and then that week we didn't do much barbecue. Talk just did cars there, you

know, just because you're in a barbecue, doesn't mean you love crappy. Japanese yam sport compact.

So we realized that we needed to too narrow in and we kind of started putting together horsepower hour and we're going to kind of hard launch it. And then covid went down and

kind of held them off. It wasn't covid.

Remember is my car accident? Well, there you got a pretty bad

wreck. Yeah, I got hit by a drunk

driver and it collapsed. Two discs in my neck and gave

me. Pretty traumatic brain injury

and covid-19 of icing on the cake.

To be honest, I thought you know I'll give myself a little time to recover and then we'll launch a horsepower hour.

But anyways, so the horsepower, our is an accumulation of all the things that we love and all of the things that we could do without from whose bosom barbecue, what we used to call 3, BQ, we still have all those episodes out there, haven't deleted any of them. People can still listen to those

and man there is some amazing content on that podcast.

East and we're trying to bring a lot of that good content over to the horsepower. Think so.

So what's the low? The low though?

Because it's difficult doing what we do, it's difficult to find new listeners, we can have golden content, and it's just really difficult sometimes. And then when the next famous

person decides I'm going to do a podcast, you know.

The pie is so big but it still feels like they're kind of tugging it. Anything that you're trying to

grab at like, what's the low the low on and why bail on it just Because of that. Well, it was a combination of

factors and none of which are really, how should I put this coin? I we love cars.

We want to talk to a car. He comes through.

Am I not? Yeah.

No, I know. I've been a car guy since before

I was allowed to drive cars and we both love to cook.

We both love to barbecue and you know, each other for a while like I was one of your recent episodes you were talking and you had You mentioned a coil? Yeah I was you guys were

roommates at the time. So how long ago?

How long have you guys known each other?

Yeah. Gosh.

How long have I known? You koi?

35 years. Yeah, but 35 going on 36.

Yeah, his mom and my dad are siblings, so okay.

Yeah, since since birth basically.

Yeah, how are you guys able to stay focused?

All right, because usually you get in these Partnerships and there's always one co-host, it just doesn't want to do shit anymore. Well so if I make Oh, go ahead.

No, go ahead from the beginning, I didn't do shit.

So we started on that foot. I just bring my mouth and I

don't really have any other talents.

So we really rely heavily on Andy to do the social media, the editing, really, all of the hard part.

And I just show up and talk. I would like to disagree with

koi and say, oh, no, he's just being modest, but no, he's oh, no, that's the truth. Okay, he doesn't drop them talk.

I will tell you though the thing that really keeps us a tight core group and koichi Can agree with me 100% when I say this.

It's that big dick energy. You know, I'm supposed to agree

with you. Yeah.

Well um you guys when you literally right or not homie ride or die, you bet you better have literally seen my penis.

You know it's not big. Like I don't know why you would

say that. It's all relative.

What's that used to sing in grade school, deep and wide?

That's what the girls are saying when you they called me tunic and Coy not long. No.

You know what keeps us going? Is just the fact that coin I

both love doing this. And again, we both love cars.

I'll tell you something. Jay, there is so much car

information in my brain that I'll never do anything with and it probably isn't even a detriment.

You know, if I'm trying to learn a new skill I'm sure their car stuff in there. That's like nope you don't get

to remember that. I'm forcing it out because you

Remember what motor mounts go in you know, to M4 Fiero, you know it's just it's all in there. It's all caught and so basically

the podcast for us it's like a therapy session you know we're getting to release some of that knowledge.

So hopefully we don't have to just sit and hang on to it for the rest of our lives. Is that fair enough?

Joy, that's fair. I don't think people really

understand nowadays with Facebook.

The amount of Time that car guys would spend pouring over forms and just basic sugar digesting, something between raw data and then people's opinions about said, raw data, thousands and thousands and thousands of pages of any car.

You're interested in a car, you had your buddy's car.

Somebody who had a car that new you are a car guy that just wanted some help with something. You're like, hang on.

I'll just search the internet for four hours or so much function, but inaudible enough to give you an answer.

Let's cross-reference a little magazine.

In that we bought when we were 16 and, you know, right now through those because I know that there's some, some, some kind of a data about it in those magazines, you know.

So I remember some dude built on this way and you reach into your banana boxes sport, compact cars and start going through it.

You know, I didn't tell you this koi, but okay.

So my nephew will just kind of get into a my nephew.

Burned up the transmission in his 2006, Honda Civic SI he's not gonna listen this podcast, so he's not gonna be pissed off at me. So he's borrowing a car from a

co-worker. It's 1.8 L Sentra.

It's a beef teen center. It's probably 2005 fish and I

just started randomly talking to him about.

Oh yeah, the be 13 Century had something real special, you know, the B13 Sentra, it came in an scr and it had four-wheel disc brakes and a little bit, you know, change suspension and had the SR20. It was still a D&E, wasn't the

ve, but it had the sr20det naturally aspirated engine and it was very good in the engines. Just they had the certain thing

in the He's just had something to him, you know, and then the be 14th century Lala and then we get to the be 15 cents and I'm telling him all the reasons why the be fifteen centuries, it's good but it's not quite as good and it kind of fell on its face and people wanted to love it but it's just not quite there and he's just sitting there with his glazed, look on his face.

Like when is this guy going to shut the fuck up so that I can go back to watching this movie? That's the look.

I have right now but now it's about exactly know what is it to here's why I love your guys podcast like real talk.

Your relatable. You don't just read off of

headlines. What's going on?

I dip my toes into so many other other Automotive podcast and they are just they sound like they just fell off the DJ booth and they're just so like commercial commercial commercial and you can identify them. They're always about trying to

book the next highest profile. Mr. So-and-so or mrs.

So-and-so from whatever and it's like for me I'm like I don't give a fuck about any of that shit.

I want to listen to you, I want to laugh at your stories.

I want to laugh at your segments and I want to learn something.

Even if it's about frickin Nissan sentra's in the SE ours and the different Motors, you know.

And that's what I love about you guys podcast and I think it's so hard to find that sound out there whether just in D level like us or bigger because a lot of people like, oh, you do A car podcast. Yeah.

Oh, Have you listened to Car Talk on NPR?

I have not, I have not and I probably never will because you lost me with NPR, you know. Yeah, so it's fun.

In smoking dealer smoking, a doob is where we take a car from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist or wherever and we review it and we decide is this car worth it.

Is it not worth it and inevitably hilarity ensues because coin, I we just we have this exhaustive Automotive background to be able to pull from.

And, you know, the pop culture references, don't necessarily hurt either, so we're able to just kind of pull that out, you know, one of my favorites right now as Overland AF, That as actually a segment that's very geared towards Coy because koi is a bit of an over Landing Legend here in Oregon.

I don't know about all that I do.

I do like, tell us up in the hills and whatnot.

So, Overland AF in the Overland Community, it's kind of grown, it picked up. A lot of the people from, like

the Honda, you know, the Honda craze and, and drift craze and all that, and they just buy a forerunner and outfit it to the max, you know, it's got heavy. But I mean, these things 8,000

pounds or 2,000 pounds of a gross vehicle, weight, rooftop, tents trailers. And they look cool.

Don't get me wrong and, and they're amazing, but they're just way over the top and it's always the newest gear.

The over lenders can almost get into like the PC guys where it's like, poop. This is outdated.

I'm getting the next coolest camp stove like it's like, what was Coleman still work? Like they are old but so there's

a lot of, a lot of cool stuff that comes out in the Overland world. Old.

Sometimes it's the fatty gear, you know that, that last item, that will kind of stop and make fun of last week, it was a mcmansion, it had an underground garage.

That just seemed over the top. So it's you, you know, just kind

of over-the-top Automotive, kind of outdoor stuff that we usually do once while we throw in a hovercraft or something.

Oh dude, one of my favorites was that that floating tent.

You remember that? Yes, I said that was the coolest

and most expensive way to kill yourself on a river.

I sat there and looked at is literally like, looked like a life raft, but it was an inflatable tent.

They just popped out on the lake and then slept in and do him wrong. Cool.

Cool. Wasn't it.

Fully inflatable, like, didn't the even the sides and everything. They were like tubes that

inflated, you know, it was, it was legit and it was expensive.

I just wanted to try and like, take it to a ski slope and pull it get like six people and they're just see where you ended up because I mean, You could peek out the window, but you can't steer it. You're inside of a tent.

There's a quick correction here. What he actually wanted to do

was convince one of his drunk friends to set it up at the top of the ski slope and then fall asleep and then push him off the side and then record that shit. Yes.

So viral at least for GoPros inside, for sure.

Did a fully built Mazda BP motor, you balance blueprinted.

All that good stuff at a GTX 2876, our turbo on it, put out 340 ish. Horsepower to the tire.

It was all wheel drive. That's probably not something I

should feel like you're missing out.

An integral part of this. What's that?

That motor was in a festive first.

Yeah, yeah, it was. The Festiva was well fast evil

as we call the Festiva, my wife called it Festivus Prime.

So the Festiva, it got to the point where all it was good for was racing sport bikes on the freeway.

And so I decided to kind of change gears With my project.

So the reason why I got the Protege all-wheel drive is because it was 2,600 pounds made, 340 course sire and it was one of the quickest cars that I've driven honestly.

I mean, not top and you know, anything that goes more than 135 miles, an hour is going to be able to beat this, but that's because I had these short rally Gators.

And yeah, one of my favorite things to do was to race Subarus around town because they just had no idea what they were in for now, I'm not advocating. As a 35 year old man that you

should go out there and build a car specifically for street racing. That's not what I'm saying.

That's no, I originally back in the day, I had a Civic hatchback that was I was big into autocrossing.

I just had to be 18, kind of a all motor setup by the SI limited-slip transmission from Japan as a little, a little shorter gear ratio gone on in it, then the type R, right?

J, one time we were in autocross, Coit had shown up and he put on his 13 by 9, Hoosier slick tyres to race and then we're getting ready to drive home.

And he was thrown on his street tires, which again, and we're And super technical here, but they were Falken as Enos, were they the RT 615 at that point? Okay, so it was, it was right

after the RT 6:15 and come out. And that was a very hot tire for

the street Tire class. And so, we're changing our tires

over in. This guy comes walking by the

again. This is an autocross event and

he comes walking by and he goes. Oh, you're changing tires and

coils. Yeah.

And he goes. Whoa, are you like you ran the

street mod class earlier you're running Street, our class now and coils. And no and the dude was like,

well why are you putting race tires back on your car?
