where we saw a momentous Formula One moment, the return of the GOAT, where Lewis Hamilton
got his first Ferrari win. You join Barcelona as it basks in Hamilton's glory a couple of
days on, and as I am on holiday, but of course, there is always time for the Fast and the
Curious. I was out covering the race for the other podcast I do. Everyone explains I've
stayed out here for a couple of days to soak up some sunshine, I mean, why wouldn't I?
But we must leave sunny Barcelona now, and we must go to America for a truly international
episode of the Fast and the Curious, where we find an intrepid World Cup reporter, Betty
Glover, if you missed our last episode, is spending the next few weeks travelling across
America in an actual tour bus. I genuinely have forgotten where she is, so we can cross
live now across the Atlantic to Betty Glover in America. Betty, where are you?
We're more worldwide than Pitbull, aren't we?
And that's saying something.
Mr. Worldwide. Yeah, Fast and Curious, Worldwide. I'm in LA at the moment, but I move over to
Seattle tomorrow. So it's been quite a wild week for me, covering the start of the World
Cup, but I mean, it's not being as wild as the weekend that you had in Barcelona with
Lewis Hamilton finally, finally getting his Grand Prix win in Ferrari. Oh, just I can't
believe it. I actually can't believe it. I was, do you know what? Sorry, I, every time
I'm supposed to do a Grand Prix, but then have to pull out for football, Lewis Hamilton
wins every time.
Happen in 2024 at Silverstone. I had to pull out at Silverstone to go and work on the Euros,
Lewis Hamilton won. I was supposed to be at Barcelona. That's a say no, because I'm doing
the World Cup, Lewis Hamilton won.
I mean, Lewis Hamilton fans would say, stay away. Like Betty, just stay away.
Never come back.
What's your next race? I think your next race is Brazil, isn't it?
Yeah, I'm doing Mexico and Brazil.
Right. Hamilton fans, Lewis will need the points in the bag before Betty returns, I think.
I did want to ask you, right, we're going to get into some of Betty's World Cup adventures
at the end of the part, because boy, has she had an adventure, which I'm just absolutely
obsessed with, by the way. But before we get into it, did Hamilton's news reach America?
I'm genuinely interested as to what the reaction was. You're covering what's supposed to be
the biggest thing going on in sport at the moment over in America. Were people talking
to you about it? I'm genuinely interested to see if there was any reaction over there.
One person spoke to me about it. I basically woke up because I'm obviously eight hours
behind the UK. And I woke up with the news and I was like, oh my God. And straight away
at breakfast, one person was just like, oh my God, can you believe it? Lewis Hamilton.
Sorry, that was a really bad accent.
Hello America. Hello American listeners.
What I think is really funny though, is that obviously it's the first all British
podium since 1968. Hold on. Let me get this thing up that I saw. Bear with me.
Oh yeah. A lot of people are sort of clutching at straws here because they're obviously saying
it's the first British podium since 1968. The race was 66 laps. Okay. Are you with me?
Oh, I know where you're going with this. The last time England won the World Cup was 1966.
So everyone is just like, it's coming home.
Oh my Lord. Could you imagine right? The scenes in the UK. If England won the World Cup and
Lewis Hamilton mounted a title charge, goodness me.
Can you imagine? It'd be insane. It is insane. But this is what I want to talk about because
I want to talk to you about is Lewis Hamilton really a contender for the world title now?
Do you think Ferrari need to prioritise him over Charlotte Claire?
And then like, where is George Russell's head at? And what does this mean for Kimmy Antonelli?
So we're going to answer all of those questions, aren't we Christian?
That's basically what we're going to get into in the next half an hour or so. We're maybe slightly
shorter episodes due to the nature of me being on holiday and Betty being needing to go to a
tour bus. Let's very briefly run through the top 10 of the race just to jog your memory.
Of course Lewis Hamilton run with George Russell second and Lando and I stared as
Betty says the first British F1 podium since back in the 60s for Stappen, Fourth, Piazzari,
Fifth, Isaac Hagger, Sixth, Pierre Gasly, Seventh, Franco Colopinto, Eighth, Liam Lawson, Ninth and
Arvid Limblad, Tenth. Betty. Double Alpine. Yes, double Alpine again. Talk us through the
championship then, Betty, because this is what's particularly interesting you, isn't it?
OK, so Kimmy Antonelli is still leading the Drivers' Championship on 156 points. Lewis
Hamilton is 41 points behind him on 115 and then 50 points further back, George Russell on 106 points.
Yeah, and Russell 50 points off the lead, we should say.
Oh, sorry, yeah. George Russell 50 points off the lead. But Lewis Hamilton 41 points off of
Kimmy Antonelli. That's a lot of points, but I can't help but think, I think you could do it,
you know. So in the last episode, we spoke about the stats behind it and I pointed to Formula One
history and we delved into the stats and I said a gap this size has never been breached before.
And we were talking about Oscar's lead last year and how Kimmy had a bigger lead over George and
everybody was talking about George. I mean, since we started this season, it's only been,
well, surely it can't be anything other than a Mercedes title fight. The thing that mean,
right, let me make this as clear as possible. If his form continues in this way, which I think it will,
Lewis Hamilton is in contention for this World Championship, I think.
I agree. And I'll tell you for why. I'll tell you for why. Firstly, this has been coming. He's in
championship form, bar a couple of sixth places in Japan and Miami, which weren't great. He's not
been outside the top four this year, fourth in Australia, which was a very solid start. A podium
in China, his first podium for Ferrari, of course. Yeah. Two seconds in Canada and Monaco and the
winning Barcelona. He's in excellent form. This isn't a flash in the pan freak show, which let's
be honest, Silverstone 2024, he was massively helped by the weather. This has been coming. This is
like a full on run that was building to a win. I went on the radio on Friday and said, if anyone's
going to stop Mercedes winning, the only person in form is Hamilton. So I think form wise, he's into
it. But Betty, there's a real crucial point of this Spanish Grand Prix weekend. Ferrari bought
some upgrades and they seemed to work. We have banged on on this podcast for so long about Ferrari
needing to prove to us they can develop throughout the season. Now there'll be people screaming at
their laptops or phones listening to this going, it's only one race and you're absolutely right.
It's very different bringing a set of upgrades to one race as opposed to doing it consistently
across a season. Of course it is. So it still comes with a big asterisk next to it. But given
Lewis's form, given Ferrari seemed to know how to upgrade this car, which is massive and crucially,
given Mercedes lack of reliability, it's on because Betty, I don't remember a car that was so quick
and so obviously ahead of the others on pace, but so fragile. This is a, you know, Kimmy's had his,
I wouldn't say deserved bad luck. Nobody deserves bad luck, but we said it might shake it out.
Kimmy's had his slice of bad luck, whereas it all gone to George, but they're both getting
reliability issues and have her throughout the season. And for that reason, even though it's
this historic big gap, I think it could happen. I genuinely think it could happen. On paper,
we've basically got a seven times world champion who's 41 years old as everyone likes to keep
reminding him, hunting down a talented, but let's be honest, inexperienced 19 year old who would
expect, you know, probably to come out on top. But when you look at it like that, you've got
seven time world champion, really experienced elite driver has proven how good he is countless times
against an inexperienced 19 year old. But on tarmac, it's a very different story, isn't it?
And also you can't forget like no driver in history has failed to take the title
after winning five races in a row. And that's what Kimmy Antonelli's done. He's got such a
comfortable lead, but you just can't rule out Lewis Hamilton at this point and a confident
Lewis Hamilton as well. He's confident. He's on fire. He's clearly enjoying himself. He loves
that car now. He loves that car now. He looks so comfortable. He does. I'll come back to that,
but let me come to your first point about the lead first. If this was a bulletproof, reliable
Mercedes, I'd be saying it's done. And I was coming into this weekend thinking it was done.
I couldn't quite understand why we weren't getting more chat of what the title is done,
isn't it? And by the way, I'm not one of these people that will sit and hype for the sake of
hyping. If I think the title is done, I'll say the title is done. But it's so delicate, the car,
because say Lewis wins again. And as I've said, the form's there, the results are there. He could
easily win again. Yes, there'll be circuits where Mercedes might have a bit of an advantage over
Ferrari because they'll be longer straights than the were in Barcelona. Fine. But Ferrari winning
more races is possible. All you need, if Ferrari can keep the development, is one more retirement.
And that 41 point gap is reduced by 25. And then you're in the place where all of a sudden,
there is enough races for that to be to be chipped away at like we saw Lando chipping away at Oscar
last year. Now, another reliability thing is a big if Ferrari improving their car more is a big
if Mercedes will want to bring development. There are still so many asterisks. All I'm saying is
you can't rule it out. This weekend has shown that for people like me who thought this was done
and dusted, I genuinely don't think you can say that anymore. What impressed you about Lewis
Hamilton's driving in Barcelona? Because obviously, you know, a lot of his critics will be like,
well, he got lucky because of the virtual safety car. But he was looking fast as well, wasn't he?
And obviously, like you said, credit to Ferrari for that unbelievable three stop strategy that
Mercedes just didn't really know how to react to. What impressed me was two things. Number one,
I saw him quite a lot this weekend in the paddock. The body language difference from last year is
unbelievable. Last year, in Abu Dhabi, I even noticed that they were bringing him to and from
the pen around the back way of the paddock, just to avoid him being out and about. Like he was
almost hunched over his eyes were low. He looked sad. Genuinely, the difference in him in this weekend
where it was like it was loving a stroll through the paddock. His generic facial expression was
bright and beaming and smiling. That honestly, the difference in body language between that one
human being wearing red from Abu Dhabi last season when I was looking at him just thinking, oh my
God, he looks broken. It's so sad to see to this weekend where the paddock was much quieter this
weekend, Betty, because it's not a Miami, it's not as full of celebs. It's a much quieter paddock.
You actually get to see more of the drivers. They're not in a scrum of people.
That's my cup of tea. That's like China.
You'd have loved this weekend. Oh, it was a good look. Yeah. It was lovely. So that was one thing.
But then he's driving what impressed me. I mean, I don't go into his driving impressed me because
he was so quick. We know that. But it was how in sync he was with the team. The team radio messages
that we were being played through. He's got so much of a better relationship with this race
engineer. He's slotted into that team. He's more comfortable in that team than he used to be. It's
obvious for all the world to see. And I just loved the way at the end that his race engineer knew
that they had a Hamilton with the bit between his teeth. He went on and said, am I in this? And they
were like, yes, you're in this. And Ted Kravitz made a brilliant spot on the sky coverage where he
said that he'd seen Fred encouraging Lewis as race engineer to sort of egg him on a bit. And don't
forget how well Fred for sir knows Lewis Hamilton. They were together during Lewis's junior career.
Fred knowing exactly what buttons to press when he's got an informed Lewis Hamilton.
The machine was working. It was fantastic to see and bloody hell when Lewis Hamilton is on form
and the machine's working and it's firing on all cylinders. Oh, you won't want to be Kimmy Antonelli.
You won't want to be against him because genuinely so many people have. Yeah, of course,
we know Lewis Hamilton got lucky with the timing of the safety car after in a shock turn of events.
Fernando Alonso is asked to Martin conked out. Who could have possibly predicted that? But I think
he'd have won it anyway. I think he had the pace. I think Ferrari and this is another thing, Betty.
Ferrari got the strategy right. If I could have done this fair works off behind me, I would.
First 20 laps of the race, I'm sat there watching the race been like, I could go.
George is going to win this. But that aggressive early stop,
forcing them into the three stop, I think they were going to do it anyway. It was brilliant.
I wouldn't have thought to go to a three stop. I thought it was going to be two because bloody
hell it was hot. But a three stop, yeah, they did brilliantly. Ferrari were great, Lewis was great.
The upgrades worked. What a weekend to be a Ferrari fan. What a weekend to be a Lewis Hamilton fan.
Well, what a weekend to be a Lewis Hamilton fan. Not necessarily what a weekend to be a Ferrari
fan because if Charlotte Claire is the man that you're supporting, then commiserations because,
I mean, oh, what a die weekend for him. Let's talk about him a little bit because
his form is horrendous and he just keeps crashing. He also just doesn't have the
pace of Lewis Hamilton. It's just, it's not ideal, is it?
Charles is a crasher, right? Charles has shown himself to be a crasher in his career.
It looks like classic over driving to me. Over driving, if you knew to Formula One,
is the term given when you're almost trying a bit too hard. It's not lovely and in sync and in
flow and just instinctive. You start to try too hard. That's when mistakes creep in. That's when
you put a wheel wide. That's when you nip a wall and we saw the qualifying crash. Because he's not
comfortable with the car, he's trying to squeeze too much out of it. This is what it appears to me.
Listen, I'm no X racing driver, but I spoke to our mate James Hinchcliffe at the weekend,
Betty, and was saying, does it look like over driving to you? And Hinch said, yeah, it does,
to me. So it seems to me a classic case of over driving. That's why he's making mistakes.
A worry for Ferrari is we've seen all these stories that they
change things in the development of the car, that it's got Lewis's DNA in it, that there's a
different braking system, that Lewis prefers one braking system, Charles prefers another.
Seems to me that they've got two drivers who may like their car in two different ways.
And is it a coincidence that this year we're seeing a happier Lewis Hamilton, but they've
almost swapped as the cars got more of Lewis's DNA in it. They will look, they're very clever people
in Formula One, they need to find a formula that works for both drivers because at the moment,
listen, Charles Leclerc hasn't become a bad driver into this season, just like Lewis Hamilton
didn't last season, but they all have the different driving styles, they all have the
different ways of working. And a lot of people said a reason why the Leclerc Signs partnership
worked really well is they gave similar feedback, they liked it in a similar way. So that's a very
good situation to have for a top team like Ferrari. Have they got that with Hamilton and
Leclerc? I don't know, it's too early to write off that relationship completely, but that strikes
me as a bit of a problem because it was just, you know, he didn't blame the car in Monaco,
and we mean we were laughing about it, but he certainly didn't blame it for his Q3 crash,
it was just a case of I messed up and it's horrible to see because he's so down and again,
talk about the body language, watching him in the pen, just what Lewis was now with Dabby last year,
I don't remember seeing him this low in his Ferrari career and let's be honest, Lewis doing what
he's doing won't be helping that, so it's so hard to see, he just needs to reset next time out,
he just needs to reset because we'll come onto George in a minute and we'll come on to the
pluses and minuses of his weekend, it looked like he'd done a very solid control out delete reset
and that's what Leclerc needs to do here. Well, Charles Leclerc is closer to Gasly than he is
Lewis Hamilton on points when you look at the drivers championship, he hasn't won since, what was
it, Austin in 2024, so do you think the Ferrari now have to prioritise Hamilton if it means that he
has a chance of possibly chasing Kimmy down? I hadn't realised that, yeah, that Austin 2024, wow,
wow, I mean, it's crazy isn't it, it is crazy when you look at that, you think wow, he hasn't
he hasn't been successful for such a long time. The last Ferrari win was signs wasn't it, so
I think it was, I haven't got the infront of me unfortunately, I haven't got all my stats
available to me in a hotel room and I haven't got my laptop but yeah, I think it was,
oh yeah, just astonishing, do they need to prioritise Lewis Hamilton? Yeah, I think they do,
I really think they do and it seems, the reason I say that is it seems strange to say that this
early in the season, we don't know how long this season is going to be,
Charles is on 75, Hamilton's on 115, that is a big, big, big gap, you know, Hamilton with four
podiums, Leclerc only two, if Ferrari think they've got a chance of going for a championship,
they've got to because that is a big 40 point gap isn't it, is that right, yeah, 40 point gap,
maths isn't my strong point, so I think they have to, do you Bitty, are we being silly here by
saying this early doors after seven races? No, I think they absolutely have to, if Ferrari
want to capitalise on any opportunity of chasing down Kimmian Tinelli and Mercedes,
they've got to prioritise Lewis now surely, I can't see the logic as to why you wouldn't
at this point, Lewis is up there, he's confident, he's winning, listen it's harsh on Charles,
it's harsh on Charles because look, his retirement, he would have picked up points this weekend, yes,
he wouldn't have beaten Lewis because he put it in the wall in qualifying, it ruined his weekend,
but he'd have picked up points, he had a power steering failure I believe, and he went over the
gravel and had to retire the car, it wasn't drivable, so very, very unlucky, so it's not Charles Faults
necessarily that, it's not as bad as his points tally showing, but what I, how many times have I
said on this podcast, I've lost my faith in them to win, we need to see Ferrari now,
unashamedly going, right we're in it to win it, we want to win, sorry Charles, from whatever race
starts next season, round one next season, it's back to the level playing field here, but we're
Ferrari, we haven't won since 2007, that's a shocker in itself, we need to be a ruthless
winning machine here, and I'm sorry mate, it's the way it's worked out, of course, it's not like
we're going to go in deliberately trying to throw you out for, and if you qualify on poll and Lewis
is third, fourth, whatever, different thing, but I want to see Ferrari go right, this to me feels
like their best chance since 2022 when they started the season so well and fell off, that it's got to
be because, because the upgrades work, now as I say it might be that in the next two Grand Prix,
Mercedes bring upgrades, and all of a sudden it was going to, God we were talking about
Ferrari being title challenges after Spain, we were getting carried away, that is a possibility,
but while the door is ajar, I want to see them walk through it.
Yeah, okay, interesting, well we are going to take a very quick break and when we're back,
we can talk all about Mercedes, where's George Russell at and what about Camille?
Hello everybody, welcome back to the Fast and the Curious, we are going to talk about Mercedes,
do you think George Russell will be happy with his weekend or do you think he's going to be a
little bit frustrated that he didn't win? 20 laps into the Barcelona, Catalonia Grand Prix,
not the Spanish Grand Prix, there's a good chance I've called it the Spanish Grand Prix already on
this podcast, that has taken a bit of getting used to after Barcelona hosted the Spanish Grand Prix
for approximately 127 years, so apologies if I have, up until lap 20, I'm thinking what a weekend
for George Russell, Kimmy didn't take part in the first practice session, there were testing bits
going on which we'll get to at the end of the pod in the practice sessions, he couldn't get a lot
from practice, but still George looked quicker than Kimmy with a big asterisk next to it,
fine, he out qualifies Kimmy and he's looking comfortable and then at the end of the race
until Kimmy retired, Kimmy was going to beat him, Kimmy was going to overtake him on track
and beat him, so if you George Russell, three quarters of your weekend and he alluded to this
in the post race interview he did with Nick Orozberg, he said it was all good up until the race
because three quarters of his weekend it looked like he'd had a proper reset and it was like right,
he's reminded us that on his weekend he can be quicker than Kimmy Antonelli,
but he had his slice of luck because Kimmy had beaten him and I'm struggling to get away from
that in my head, I know that's really worrying for George Russell, all he can do is go into the
next Grand Prix and try and have a reset where he doesn't then lose it towards the end of the race
and we might be able to point to maybe George went too much on his tyres and it wasn't an overall
pace thing, I don't know it's difficult but I was worried for him at the end of that Grand Prix,
I really really was. I think the fact that he's made up 18 points on Kimmy Antonelli,
he'll be delighted about that fact but the fact that it was just luck that Kimmy retired allowed
George to be P2, it just doesn't bode well for him and I don't really know where he goes from here,
like clearly mentally he is you know having to really like pick himself up, he's had a tough time
as George and I think yeah I do wonder if it has knocked him a little bit this how this season's
gone, I don't know if you've seen some of like the reaction to Barcelona but a lot of people are
saying that he didn't look like a driver that was trying to compete for the title this weekend at all.
I think he did until the race, I think that's harsh until the end of the race but listen on that 53
he was given the hurry up over the radio and to those people making that point that's worrying
for a title contender on lap 61 he got passed so. Villeneuve made that point. What did Villeneuve say?
He said something like George Russell doesn't look like a driver that is fighting for the title.
Yeah doesn't look like a driver going for the title.
Yeah I just I think Jacques Villeneuve for those newer to the sport that's the 1997 F1 world champion
and the Sky Sports F1 pundit I think it's slightly harsh on him until midway through the race
because he's had a really good yeah qualified Kimmy like like he bounced back if I'm George Russell
and I'm on the plane home the thing I'm not getting out of my head is that oh the kid passed me again
and that you know at a point where at one stage George looked so in control of this race
and in fact I tweeted after the start where he was marching away he pulled out a right lead
I tweeted something strange is going to have to happen for Kimmy not to win this race and they
realized I tweeted Kimmy and I meant George sheer force of habit which yeah you're subconscious
you're subconscious and saying actually Chris you know it is going to be Kimmy
it's exactly what I thought I was like oh no I'm so used to Kimmy marching away so listen Kimmy
didn't have a bad weekend by any stretch of the imagination because he pulled it back and he
got his slice of bad luck my worry for Mercedes is as we said at the start of the pod that reliability
and Toto Wolfe I can't remember the exact quote but he was talking on Sky at the end of the Grand Prix
and he was sort of saying we can't afford to be like look we know who we're up against with Lewis
Ferrari seems to have taken a step forward the tone of Toto Wolfe's interview I think summed up
why I spent the first half of this podcast saying Ferrari are in it I think he realized
look listen Mercedes haven't won a title since 2020 so you know they after after starting the way
they've had have if they then go on to now not win this title oh goodness me that we heartbroken so
I think there's some uncomfortableness at Mercedes given the reliability I think Kimmy's done everything
he really can and I think George has sat there being like oh he still seems quicker than me
I'm gonna be a hypocrite now and just go back on what I said earlier but like
oh they've got such a lead Kimmy Anthony does have such a lead 41 points over Lewis
reliability yeah it needs something like really bad to to happen quite a lot but the
reason I'm saying the it's possible is we are seeing that reliability
repeatedly and we have done all season so that's why I'm saying it's on but yeah I I
totally see what it's worth it's just where the Ferrari can hold it together and capitalize
on those chances that they get to to beat them really and oh it's exciting and before we wrap
it up Christian just a word on McLaren because Landon Norris got another podium how'd you rate
their weekend I just think they'll be really disappointed only very briefly there was talk
in the paddock earlier on in the weekends that they would be stronger this weekend there was
taught that they could be in the mix for pole position and none of it materialized so it's
sort of the opposite of what we're saying to Ferrari there was optimism about Ferrari
and it and it proved to be so McLaren will be disappointed I think I think Landon Norris had
a very very good weekend personally I think squeezing that car on the podium is the best he
could have done another disappointing weekend for Oscar who just doesn't seem to be able to match up
to Landon's pace at the moment he'll be questioning that he'll be wondering why that's the case because
there is a more obvious gap between Landon and Oscar than there was last season there's time for
Oscar to fix that of course but it still seems like more frustration for McLaren they I think had
hoped for more out of that weekend I've sensed renewed optimism from them which ultimately
didn't prove to be just before we go we always ask you guys to get in touch with your thoughts
feelings emotions questions this is from Camilla she said hi Betty and Christian I was watching P1
earlier and noticed that some of the cars had some sort of small metal grid almost like scaffolding
at the front any clue what this is and what it does thanks so much for an amazing podcast as a
newish female Formula One fan your pod has been a safe and fun place to learn and follow the sport
well wishes from a Danish listener what an absolutely lovely lovely email that was to get
or that's not it's not an email it was an Instagram message actually Derek but yeah
what lovely post what lovely mail to get through the post what lovely mail to get from the pigeon
so old um basically that is um what we sometimes see in pre-season testing they are aerodynamic
rakes they get put onto the front of the car they do look like scaffolding they have lots of tiny
tiny little sensors on them and they give loads of aerodynamic data and why did we see that at
this circuit because Barcelona is a circuit that has been traditionally used for testing in the past
the teams have loads of data on it they know loads about it and it's a circuit that has this is why
it was used for testing in the past it's a circuit that has loads of different types of corners there's
a big long straight the sweeping term one which is a sweeping fast corner there's a tight twisty
little bit because of all the different characteristics of corner and the long straight it is ideal for
testing your car and that's why we saw what we usually see some pre-season testing a little bit
of extra testing going on with the rakes normally you see those and flow viz paint which is like a
gungee material like a thicker paint that goes on to the car that um again they can see where the
wind flows and see the characteristics of how the paint smudges and basically see lots of aerodynamic
information from that so you sometimes see a little bit of that um great question before we go
betty i want to mention two things i want to mention under the radar nickah holkenberg
excellent weekend had the unluckiest retirement ever when a piece of gravel flicked up and switched
his energy recovery system off the most unlucky retirement ever he had a great weekend and would
have scored points for oudie but we mentioned at the start of the episode betty is in the world cup
i would like to read in the world cup she is in the world cup i would like to read this news article
on the podcast for major british newspaper the daily mirror bbc presenter forced to interrupt
world cup coverage after spotting background moments bbc presenter betty clever had been
attempting a report on the world cup when she noticed a couple necking it behind her a bbc
reporter was forced to interrupt her own coverage i mean by the way mirish she's not there for the

i we want to plug the lovely men in blazers youtube and podcast show that she's doing uh bbc sport
correspondent betty clever had been reporting live on the world cup from the streets of los angeles
this weekend the presenter was due to deliver a report to camera after scotland's won the
win against haty but had to abandon her coverage after realizing a couple were involved in a very
close encounter behind her broadcasta betty admitted she couldn't hold it together after
noticing the couple making out behind her she took to social media to share a clip showing how
stunned she was when she realized what was going on directly behind her uh betty wrote on instagram
don't mind me guys just trying to do a piece to camera when a couple started necking it on behind me
um and then it goes into do lots of quotes from people and on social media it's a social media
reaction to it and it says at the bottom of the article journalist christian hugel said this is
the greatest thing i've ever seen another said please show this on air while a third wrote fair
play for trying to keep it going a true pro betty your reaction to making being an amazing
newspaper for your coverage of the world cup god there's so many stories around that they could
be writing about by the way and they've chosen to write about that oh god do you know what it was so
funny though because i was there and i was doing this like i was i was starting and my camera mom was
just like laughing his head off and i was like what is he laughing at so i was like turning around
and then i see this couple and the guy had literally dragged his girlfriend into shot so
they were directly behind us and he was just absolutely like sucking her face off that i'm
stood there and i can basically hear it all happening behind me and honestly i just i just
couldn't hold it together i've never seen pda like it in my life okay sorry we need to do some analysis
here what i didn't realize because we've not spoken about this that he dragged her into shot
yeah we think he saw what we were trying to do so moved into shot to do that with her
so weird let's be honest there's a kink going on there isn't there that's a there's a pda kink
of some description go that's a yeah very weird very very weird don't don't do it on purpose that's
all sorts of ew isn't it oh yeah what a shame but guys i don't know is this is this a is this an
american thing that i don't know about is pda just just quite quite big in america well this
there's kiss cam which you see yeah at the big stadiums but i think that doesn't that tends to be
a nice kiss rather than in your words betty and they were very accurate ones sucking each other's
face off i just i was taking it too far isn't it i think so i haven't seen passion like that
on the streets for years well for good reason anyway right it's called a past day
here in basalona i'm going for my dinner i'm hungry i hope that's okay oh by the way um after the
race in basalona last night betty um i met up with my lovely fiance david well i'm using this catcher
podcast as a catcher with my friends get over it um i met up with david in sitches which is just
north of basalona which is where i am now little did we realize betty and we genuinely didn't know
this it was the last night of sitches pride so our our quiet dinner turned into dancing at the
campest bar you've never been to in your life until the early hours of the morning and today
i've had the worst hangover i've had for genuinely years uh so if we're going on the steven Bartlett
approach of um winds made me podcast worse this has been a terrible podcast for me because i've
spent the day hanging out my proverbial by the pool so i had a great time great time before we
actually do go um what were you dancing to what music did they play oh yeah basically
already very camp remixes of already very camp songs like you don't need to remix the ymca to
make it camper but they found a way my friends they found a way we had kai we had ymca we had
spice girls going on it's very me and david coded oh we're having a lovely time so we genuinely thought
we had visions of quiet meal after a busy race weekend oh i've been a dance in a bar oh it was
oh it was great it was out of lovely time just what i've got you what what are the vibes in spain
have you heard any people crying because they failed to beat cape verde who are making their
debut at the world cup and the spanish their favorites to win this world cup so i wouldn't be
surprised this has happened to how we've been talking do anything i saw last night genuinely
throughout sitchies i saw more formula one merch than i did football tops i didn't see a single
football top last night when i was out but i saw McLaren msadie's red bull and loads of
ferrari hats and there was a guy sat drinking outside a bar we were in at one point in full on
hamilton kit so he got a lovely day and he was sat yeah so old older guy genuinely must have been
late 50s early 60s um hamilton cap hamilton top sat with a beer with all his mates none of his mates
were in um none of his mates were in hamilton attire so uh yeah outside a bar which i believe
he's called homo in sitchies which uh i might have got that wrong but it's something like that so
yeah which can tell you it was obviously an establishment it was i was great and a great
time so yeah saw more f1 than i did football but going out for dinner now they might all be sad
really might be um i hope that guy enjoys it enjoy this soak it up louis hamilton fans what
what a time to be alive what a sporting story thank you so much enjoy the rest
