Indycar Dad: Here's how to have a great time at the Indy 500. I'm Indy Cardad and my goal is to help you have the most possible fun at the races. So I'm gonna give you five techniques to maximize having fun at the 500.
So the first technique is get there early. The traffic is a nightmare. 350,000 people show up to this race and for roads that aren't meant to handle it. So between the police blocking off whole sections of traffic, and the neighborhoods getting jam-packed and lines everywhere, get there early.
Old timers get there at 7 a.m. I know it sounds nuts, but that's what they do. So get there early, that's the first thing. The second tip is a backpack is a great idea. It generally fits in the space that you're gonna occupy in the stands.
It's easy to carry around. And if you have an insulated backpack, it keeps everything cold. Although I've learned... that you really don't need the insulation because most backpacks will keep things cold.
So there you go. With the backpack, I like to put in frozen bottles of water. Why do I put in frozen bottles of water along with my beverages? Because ice melts and turns the liquid, which you can't drink and you can't use.
These things you can't drink like these reusable ice packs, but this thing starts out ice, stays cold for a long time, and you can drink it in the afternoon. So. four or five frozen bottles of water to go with your beverages.
And then you can put your cans of beverages, no bottles at the track, cans of beverages in there too. So ⁓ I also recommend waterproof snacks. So what does that mean? Like protein bars, if you're on a health kick, are waterproof.
They're all sealed up. You can have like beef jerky is sealed up, you know, and I got some almonds. You can also, I like to get one of those subs from Walmart. because it's totally wrapped in like a real plastic, not like plastic wrap.
And that just can go in the thing and it can be damp or whatever, it doesn't matter. When you pull it out, it's gonna be perfectly fine. All right, so that's tip number two. Get your backpack ready. Tip number three, protect yourself.
So we're gonna talk about, you need some sunblock, big time, right? You need some hearing protection. You're gonna need a poncho in case it rains. And I also like a hat to keep the sun off my face. So third tip, protect yourself.
Fourth tip, if you have a scanner, it's fun. Get it ready, get the frequencies in there. They're available on IndyCar.com in the spotters guide. You might also find them online at scannerfrequencies.com, I think it is, and you can download it into your scanner using your computer.
So that's fourth. And then fifth is be comfortable. Wear clothes that are comfortable. Maybe some merch that you like. got your drivers, you know, hat or something like that. And wear that because you're going to want to walk around.
There's lots to see. There's a lot of people watching and that type of thing. So it's a great event. You're really part of something really huge. Also, people are really nice in Indiana and they're a little weird for the 500.
So you're going to see a lot of cool stuff and maybe you'll be part of that stuff because I encourage you to get a little weird for the 500. I've already got my fro made. My fro fro, hold on, I'll grab it for ya.
So I like to make a fro fro, cause I'm a fro fan. And this time I got a tan one, because this car is tan. So, fro, there you go. Go fro! And ⁓ yeah, just take it a little weird, go see the weird stuff you're gonna see around the track.
So let's recap. One, arrive early. Two, get your backpack straight. I like frozen water bottles. Three, protect yourself. So, four, scanners are fun if you have one. Five. comfortable shoes, clothes, and all that sort of stuff.
So thanks for watching. I'm IndyCarDad. I help you have fun at the races. Follow me for lots more fun IndyCar related stuff. Thanks for watching.
