We've had some winds here along south shores of Lake Erie, but I'll tell you, we got some snows.
It is a great Canadian winter around here.
It looks like we're going to be doing some cleanup today because we had a big streamer come through twice yesterday.

Yeah, we're going to have a look at that.
We're going to break that down for you.
Here we go.
Now, I've talked about our car connection maintenance schedule that I created probably 10 years ago and then we shelved it.
They were flying out the door when we were on the FM station.
We're shipping them out all the time, but I'll tell you what, not only will my 30-day fuel savings tips put money back in your wallet,
so we're going to do that after Family Day in Ontario here, sort of the middle.
The middle kind of used to be around the 17th of February, but we'll find out.

Our maintenance schedule, I had them revamped.
I think it was last year.
They're really nice now, really, really nice.
They've come a long way.
They're laminated.
I'm going to share that with you.
How I created this maintenance schedule is how you can get to 300, 400, 600,000 kilometers.
Here's the kicker.
You've got to follow the maintenance schedule.
Just like when you go to the dentist.
That's a bad example for me right now.
But anyways, I don't want to digress on that one.
But you know that stupid COVID campaign thing?
I couldn't get to my dentist for like three years.
Yeah, it's cost me now, baby.
My dentist was in cold New York.
Near the ski resort.
Very nice.
I don't ski.
I slide.
Anyways, if you follow this maintenance schedule,
and the maintenance schedule I'm holding in my hands right now,
I'm going to shoot a video on it.
I'm going to talk to Skippy about that today.
We'll do a YouTube video on our car connection maintenance schedule next week,
and then we'll schedule it to be posted.
And I will let you know on this show when that video drops,
so that you can go and look at it.
It's super simple, but it's not.
It's all laid out for you already.
You don't have to think about a thing.
Just check the box.
That's it.
And hang it up where it's not behind a closet door or under the staircase,
where you're never going to see it.
You post it because you're going to learn fleet maintenance.
Fleet maintenance is going to do a number of things for you.
Number one, put money back in your pocket.
Number two, you're not going to have to do home to work, home to work,
home to work, home to work, get off the wheel, lick the little ball,
get a pellet, jump back on, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run,
get off, lick the little ball, get a pellet, jump back on,
and get stuck like a lot of people in the never, never, never plan.
You never own, really own an automobile.
Your car broke all the time.
How do I know that?
Well, almost five decades of listening to, watching,
trying to be as sympathetic and empathetic as possible,
but when you treat a donkey like it's a very bad donkey,
it's probably not going to move no matter what you say or do.
So in other words, if you just always keep treating your vehicle
like it's just a disposable pair of pants, bad thing, diapers, that's it,
disposable diapers, you're stuck in the vortex of the never, never plan.
Never without a car payment and never ending expenses.
You're not only paying for it and paying interest
and you're not paying attention to the maintenance.
By the time you make the last payment, there's sweet bugger all left
and now you got to go get another one.
Finance up to the freaking ears.
Does it sound familiar?
Because I'm only repeating back what I heard from my customers
at my shop on the Hamilton Mountain.
And we had 500 steady clients on this maintenance schedule.
It's laminated.
It's environmentally safe.
It's environmentally friendly.
You follow the list of things that need to be done
and it tells you when to do them.
So the description, mileage or increment.
And then a calendar, January through December.
Your starting mileage and your ending mileage.
And if your vehicle is equipped with a timing belt,
you're going to fill in the mileage when that should be done.
And here's what I tell everyone to avoid catastrophic engine damage.
If your timing belt should be in your vehicles equipped with one.
And it's easy to tell.
And I'll show you that in the shop as well.
Maybe we'll just do one outside in the freezing cold
and come back with frostbite.
But at least we'll have a video on it.
How do you tell it's easy?
You look at the front of the engine.
If there's a plastic cover there, timing belt.
If you look at another engine, it's flat like a pancake
where the drive belts are.
Everything's metal. There's no plastic cover there.
It's got to change.
All right. It's that simple really.
Anyone can do it.
Any age group.
And that goes for all our videos.
I don't want any excuses on the YouTube channel.
I put so much there for you to learn.
It's like you're in the shop with me
and you're my apprentice.
Everything in simple terms.
Basic fundamentals.
Explaining what it is, where it is, how it works, how it breaks.
And if you knew just a little bit more about your vehicle
and about those components,
then you'd gain a lot more knowledge and respect.
And you'll save money every single time.
And money will come back to your pocket.
So, first of all, I think what I'm going to do here is
I'm going to read the instructions to you
that you get in the kit
so that you can get a better understanding how simple it is.
So, seniors, I R1.
This is simple.
My pops is 89.
He texts, he has a smartphone.
He goes on the computer.
I think he's addicted to Timu.
I'm just saying, yeah.
Anyhow, he's 89.
He still drives, got his faculties.
Hallelujah for that.
And he's still got his independence.
So, no excuses.
Pops is, he used to be brutal on cars.
But now, you know what,
since he retired many, many years ago,
he's really thorough with the maintenance.
Thanks to me, I hope.
Here's the instructions for our maintenance schedule kit.
When I say it's not complicated,
that's where I'm going here.
It's not complicated.
I believe in the term kiss.
Keep it super simple.
Otherwise, everyone, guess what?
You get lazy, you get complacent.
It's like, well, honey,
do you think I look fat in this?
I think I just heard a blue jay.
Yeah, don't answer that.
That's a loaded question, guys.
That'll get you killed, or at least injured.
I should lose 30 pounds.
Okay, how are you going to do it?
You can't have a brisk sit.
You've got to have a plan, a maintenance plan,
on how you're going to get rid of that 30 pounds
that you want to get rid of.
And then you've got to do it.
That's the mindset.
There always has to be a battle to get to the victory.
And that's what I love about car shows.
I love car shows to talk to the vehicle owners
and hear the backstory.
The labor of love that at the end game,
all of us want to go and, you know,
get a chin plate because you're going to drool
when you see some of these vehicles.
But when you look at, I love the fellas
and the fellas that create a library,
a photo album, and they lay it out
so you can see the pictures and go,
oh, my, that was nasty.
And you look at it, and Alan, you go,
it's thinking gorgeous.
How did it get there?
It wasn't by itself,
and that's the point I'm trying to make here.
You buy a piece of equipment,
and I like to use the bulldozer.
Why?
Because it's a piece of equipment
that only makes you money when it's working.
Sound familiar?
Your car, the one that's paid off,
is making you money every time you turn the key
if you maintain it.
It's priceless.
It absolutely is.
It's not costing you interest
and principal payments every month.
It's yours.
It's your bulldozer.
If your bulldozer is not working
or it's broken down,
do you have the money to go and get another bulldozer
this afternoon?
You go, holy smokes, I didn't know they were worth that.
I love this old bulldozer.
I'm going to fix it up.
Yeah, I'm going to love on it.
I'm going to take care of it.
Exactly.
Because you don't have the money to go and just go,
oh, well, you know, it's an old bulldozer.
I'll just go get another one.
You guys, man, no, I think I'm just falling in love
with my old bulldozer.
And then you want to fix it up.
But that bulldozer only makes you money
when it's on the dirt moving the earth's crust.
But if it's broken,
you get called out to a job.
You go, well, I got to fix my bulldozer before it can come.
Well, I'll just call somebody else.
Are you getting it?
You got to treat your car the same way.
I also like to use the helicopter analogy.
If we all drove helicopters,
a lot of us would not be here today.
Right?
Because the service lights been on for months
and you're at 12,000 feet
and the service light can't come back on
because it's already on
and the aircraft is not behaving very nice.
And you're quite a ways off the ground.
How well would you maintain your helicopter?
That's a good question, isn't it?
It's a very good question.
How well would you want to maintain
your personal helicopter that takes you to and from work?
Would you go, oh, yeah, you know,
the lights been on for a couple days.
It should be just fine.
Yeah, yeah, of course.
Sure, well, so here we go.
Let's jump in.
Here's the instructions you receive
with your car connection maintenance schedule kit.
These things I've made them so cheap
I'm almost giving them away.
And the reason being is
what I have in my hand
will put a lot of money back in your pocket,
will keep your car running
as long as you want to keep it,
as long as you're following the maintenance schedule.
Okay, instructions.
Write your starting mileage in the space provided.
Number two,
make a note of when your timing belt is due
in the space provided.
And we just talked about that.
Easy to Google it.
I just did it on the 2008 Nissan Rogue
and every thought about that
doesn't have a timing belt or a chain.
I looked it up.
So then you put your mileage in,
find out when it's to be changed.
If it says change it at 80,
no, you're not.
You're going to change it at 70.
Why?
Because you do not want to test
that timing belt.
How far can I go before it breaks?
Because if you have an interference engine
that means when the timing belt breaks
the pistons smash the engine
to keep it simple.
Yeah, the pistons
dance with the valves
in the solar head and the engine gets totally destroyed.
It's done, period.
Over.
Yep, she's singing again.
If it's a non-interference
then when the timing belt breaks
pistons stop, valves stop
where they are and the pistons
do not hit the valves
and smash the engine.
It's just better to do it at 10
because I know you folks
well if it says 80
we can probably push that to 110.
That's how you think.
I know it.
Because I've seen it and I've had to call
engines ago.
You should have been here in the shop
about 10,000 K
ago. We could have saved the engine.
Everything would have been just fine but the belt broke
the engine smashed.
What are we going to do now?
That's what I usually hear.
Well, what's this going to cost?
Well, you need another motor.
Oh, we don't have that kind of money.
There you go.
Now you're stuck.
We're still making payments on it.
That's an interesting
moment of fellowship when
Pops gets home, right?
Number three, attach the magnets
or the two-way tape
to the maintenance schedule.
You get to pick.
Both are provided.
Number four,
peel off the paper backing
on the marker holder and attach it
to any area of your maintenance
schedule.
Insert the dry-race marker
into the marker holder.
Number five,
decide which month
you wish to start
your maintenance schedule and proceed
down the list
marking each month as
necessary.
Number six,
when you're 12 months or over,
it's time to start again.
And so
you wipe it off.
What I tell people
to do is get your start
done at the top and then wipe it off.
So you're not going, oh, I
didn't mark that down on it.
So you want anything you need to transfer
to the top of the schedule.
Do that before you
erase the whole thing.
So that just all you're doing
is rotating the pattern.
What do you do when you get to the bottom?
Start again at the top.
Rotate the pattern.
It's that easy.
Post your schedule,
maintenance schedule
in the maintenance manager's office,
whoever that is in your household.
Honey, this needs to get done this month.
We got a book and appointment
for this car for this.
And I suggest
you can put multiple cars
on each of the maintenance schedules.
I would suggest
one for each vehicle.
And if you have sons and daughters at home
that have their own vehicle,
you want to teach them how
to do this now
while they're young.
And carry it on through their entire life.
They will not be car
broke.
And doing the home to work, home to work, home to work,
home to work, home to work,
for the rest of their life
making car payments.
Car payments.
I never buy new cars.
You know what I wait for?
I wait for someone that's bought something I like
and I tell them,
when you're ready to get rid of that,
come and see me first.
And I've bought a few vehicles like that.
Absolutely. From my customers when I had the shop.
And I sometimes
know somebody who's looking for one
and I'd say, well, I've got a customer
they're talking about getting rid of it.
I'll let them know. Give us first
rights.
And then I'll call you. And I set up
Mr. Matchmaker.
But it worked out for everybody.
You know, nobody got taken advantage of it.
It worked very, very well.
If you can buy a pre-owned vehicle
off someone you know
that takes care of their vehicle
like me.
I had a lady come.
I just mentioned to someone when I had my 98
Honda CRV.
That thing was fabulous.
That was the first time I ever had a Honda.
And it was
real-time all-wheel-drive.
That little Hummer was fabulous.
I put 239,000
miles. That was American
car on that. And I mentioned
to somebody
when I was looking for a Toyota FJ Cruiser
and they were way out of my price range
and I was like, I don't think this is going to happen.
Otherwise, you know Tony,
my certified financial planner said,
here's your budget. Don't call me for a single
dollar more.
Okay, I won't.
He goes, no, I'm serious. This is it. That's your budget.
You can get an FJ for this price
all in
done.
We're done.
But you got to get this much for your Honda.
And I go, okay.
So, all of a sudden my phone rings one evening.
Hey Nile, it's so-and-so.
I heard you're getting rid of your CRV.
Mine. She goes, mine.
I go, well, I haven't found what I'm
looking for. Where my husband and I are coming over.
We're going to leave you a deposit.
Come over.
You give me 3,500 bucks.
I'm like, it might be a year.
We don't care. We want that.
Yeah, that's ours.

If it takes six months or a year, we're still good
with that. We want that.
And they did. They ended up with it.
It was like three months later. Bam.
Something came right out of the woodwork.
My producer at the time at ESPN found it
online in Canada.
He goes, Nile, you might want to take a look at this after
your show. And that's how I ended up with it.
And they got my 98 CRV
with 229 or 239,000 kilometers.
And I'd seen it on the road still.
It's still on the road.
How did that happen?
I know I took
excellent care of it.
I was hoping I could keep it.
I would still have it today.
But, you know, I had to go in order to make
the 07 FJ
thing happen.
And I'm glad that it did because it's really worked out.
But I follow my own
maintenance schedule. That's what I'm saying.
The FJ is going to be
a member of the 400,000
kilometer club this year.
And celebrate.
We're going to celebrate and make a cake.
I'll make a cake and everything because I bake.
And celebrate 400,000
K.
Then the next mile marker is going to be the
600,000 K mark.
Yeah.
You can do it.
If you follow the cake mix.
The maintenance schedule.
I designed it after
doing years and years of
fleet maintenance.
This allowed me
to not miss something
and get
the shop owner into trouble.
Because I missed something
on an inspection.
And that's when
we would do fleet maintenance
when whatever vehicle they brought us went back.
Somebody went over the whole
thing with the work order
to verify we didn't
miss something. That's what their job was.
To double check
that we
did not
miss something
when it was in the shop for service.
It wasn't just service.
We called that a full maintenance.
That means every nook
and cranny.
And if it sounds complicated
it's not when you
have a chart
that's easily laid out for you.
And I'm just going to give you some suggestions.
Because this is how you do it.
There is no other
way you're going to make it
to 300.
400.
600 if you treat your car
like a bad bad donkey.
You're never going to make it
and you're always going to be
car broke.
Change the mindset.
Grab hold of my coat tails.
I can't do this forever
this program but I'm
enjoying teaching people
if you're teachable. As my
prof would say when the student
is ready the teacher
will appear. This is money
in the bank.
Get off that treadmill.
You don't have to go
and buy a vehicle to impress people
that you don't even know
and you probably don't even like.
Who cares?
I
heard someone say I don't like driving older vehicles.
I do.
Well yours looks so good all the time.
I said yeah they're self
cleaning, self maintaining.
Get out of here.
No I'm just pulling your leg. No they're not.
You got to put the effort in.
You got to love on it.
You got to take care of it.
You have to look after
the present vehicle like you
can't get another one.
That's what you have to do.
As a matter of fact with the 07
FJ Cruiser.
If there are any for sale
they're usually really bad
or they want a lot of money for them
because they haven't made them since 15
and now they're extremely popular
and I get asked all the time
I go yeah so you offer me 25 grand
I can't even go and get one
for that. If there's one out there
that's not beat up because
there was no rhyme or reason. When I was looking
they were either really really beat up
or they were so good
and the price was
like brand new
off the showroom floor prices like
no I'm not giving you that.
No. Can't do it.
So
what you have to do
is get that mindset
this is the
last vehicle
I can buy.
This one right here.
You definitely got to have
something that's a value
to start with.
Yeah so if it's
I mean if it's a collector's piece
drive a mile go back collect a piece
that isn't going to work.
You've got to get something pre-owned
you know what
I buy vehicles 10 years old
and I don't care if it's got
300k
200k
I look at it and I go you know
how it made that mileage they looked after it
that's how they made it.
So that's how I buy the car
I look at it and go they got
230k on this thing look at it
it's like new
inside and out
that's how they got there
and then when I start looking at it
it's all been serviced
nothing's broken
nothing's undone fluids are good
tires are good they've
loved on it
and now they're ready to move into
something else.
I hope you're grasping this
because it's a formula
that when you
work it and rotate the pattern
it puts a lot of money
back in your pocket
and you're not car broke
and then it
starts to get less and less
that you have to get on that hamster wheel
run run run
get off lick the ball get a pellet
jump back on run run run run run
run run run run get off lick the ball
get some water get a pellet
jump back on you don't like
you don't have to
do that
so here's the deal

what is on so

it's telling you you need a multi
point inspection
to stay ahead of the maintenance
curve so nothing gets away
from you and guess what that does

you don't take the car and the guy goes

there's a lot of that going on
I got an invoice on my desk there
that the lady that donated
the 2008
Nissan Rogue to us
God bless her for that that's for sure
the bill
to fix everything up
was almost $2,800
and they missed
stuff big time
yeah and to get it through a safety
it was still a little bit more but we got it
done and it's done so
at six months it's now telling you
inspect every six months
multi point vehicle inspection
replace fuel filter
replace pollen filter
and it's giving you the time frame
right next to it every
six months
once yearly
minimum once a year
12 to 18 months thermostat
they don't last
forever
thermostats are a very busy little dude
and when they don't work you can burn your engine out
and your automatic transmission
so you get it out of there
before that happens
so we have that written down for you
12 to 18 months
automatic transmission service
22,000
kilometers or 12,000 miles
manual transmission service
22,000 kilometers
or 12,000 miles
that's going to take care of a very
expensive component for you
and it's telling you when to do it
when to do it
so that you're not stretching out your maintenance
and causing
your own damage
yeah and then you suffer
emulsion
damage and you don't want that
no
so I hope that shed
some light on things
because treating your vehicle
like it's
the last one
that you're going to be able to buy
but as I said
you've got to have something to work with
first
and doing so many
vehicle restorations
that you know I'll do a show on that
for the gals and the guys
that are into that
I've done so many I kind of burn myself out
I've got some still in storage
and they're in production
they've made it so far
and then I just kind of like
life is just too busy
to go there so we're wrapping
these things up and getting them done
but if you're looking
to do that kind of thing
you've got to get something
that you've got something good
to start with
if it's a total rust bucket
you know unless it's the rarest
vehicle on the planet
you're not going to rescue it
it's going to be a parts it's going to be a donor
that's what it's going to be
a parts harvest donor
because that's just way too much work
you go and find something else that's solid
you got something to work with
that's what you need for your daily driver
you've got to have first
a base
what is the base?
a vehicle that's solid
and worthy of putting some money into
and then just keeping it going
and maintaining it like it's the last
one you'll ever
be able to buy
period you know like people
you know at my age they start downsizing
and sometimes they'll go
you know we need downsize and I want to move
out into country somewhere where it's quieter
not so much traffic
you know that becomes
their forever home
right that's it for them
that's a step from
this was for the now
raising the family the kids were all gone
we don't need this much room
there's only the two of us
the kids show up once in a while
to be with us but they don't hang out for weeks
in days
we can use something smaller
in a place where we really want to be
and that's our forever home
that's how you got to look at that
vehicle that you have
it's solid
it's not rusted out and get on a program
and number one is
protect
at all cost
the vehicle from rusting out
anywhere
that's number one so that
you know that the vehicle is going
to be solid
structure wise
and the rest of it is all just
on the maintenance sheet you can keep it
as long as you want
that's it's that
simple and get out of the
never never plan
you're never without car payments
always paying principal and interest
and you never own the thing
and then by the time you pay it off
you've already got to replace it
because it's it's there's nothing
left of it
it needs what does it need
and here's what I have to tell people
they bring it in yeah let us know
what it needs now
okay call them
well what does it need

everything somebody needs
to come down here so I can show you
yeah you need to
see all this it's important
you see it because it needs
