Kelly shares her recent experience with anaphylaxis after discovering an allergy to anchovies, which led to a trip to the ER and a newfound dependence on her EpiPen. The conversation touches on the challenges of managing food allergies, especially as a parent, and the emotional toll it takes. Liz and Kelly also discuss their recent activities, including a sourdough party and the importance of community connections. The episode wraps up with heartfelt stories about pregnancy and infant loss, emphasizing the significance of remembering and honoring lost loved ones.
Remember when Kelly mentioned she might have had an allergic reaction to anchovies in Detroit? Well, it turns out she was onto something as it happened again and this time sent her to the ER! Welcome to the Carpool podcast with Kelly.
Like if I was with somebody and they ordered Anto's on their pizza,
like I would think certain things about them.
It's just nice that I can be like, oh no, I'm allergic.
Like that's disgusting. I'm allergic.
Like it's just kind of something kind of chic.
And Liz.
Sips and sourdough party.
I'm obsessed.
I'll give you your own starter, teach you how to keep it alive
and how to make a sourdough loaf just in time for soup season.
Your mom time off starts now.
Welcome back to the Carpool podcast.
Oh, with Kelly and Liz and my EpiPen.
The EpiPen is always with us now.
It's Kelly, Liz and EpiPen.
Hi, everyone.
This is like my first, like any remotely-esque social.
It's going to be a rough episode for me.
Let's start at the beginning for those who don't know.
Well, if you do know, because you listened to this podcast,
you talked about how you're on a brand trip and you tried an anchovy
and you kind of had like a weird reaction.
Yeah.
And then last week, Kelly was making her family a Caesar salad
without the intention to eat it herself.
But like, you know, when you're doing like one of those salad kits
and like dressing always gets on your hands like inevitably,
Kelly licked some off of her finger and you did go into anaphylactic.
You were going, I don't know the terminology of allergies.
You were going into anaphylactic.
I've learned so much.
So yes, I was not intending to eat.
My plan was I was going to try to get in with an allergist
and just avoid anchovies.
And because I think that's what it is because I've had everything
else that Caesar dressing is made up of, like I've been having regularly.
So I think it is and an anchovy allergy is not,
it's not a crazy thing to develop, especially for like women in their 30s.
And I did it and then I immediately was like, oh, that was a bad idea.
And I like let everything sit for a few minutes.
But then I noticed that like I wasn't having like the same like lip swelling
because I think that actually would have calmed me down.
But instead I started to feel like my tongue was getting big
and I started to get a lot of anxiety.
And then I feel like I started to feel like I was having trouble like filling my lungs,
like not necessarily breathing, but like catching a deep breath.
And I mean, transparently, like it was me and Tyler and our four kids alone.
Like, thank goodness Tyler was there, but Tyler was outside with the big kids.
I had Libby inside.
So I walked out to Tyler and I was like, I think I'm having an allergic reaction.
You take Libby, I'm going to go take some Benadryl.
And I was like and come inside with me because I was just like getting a little nervous.
Took the Benadryl, waited like five, ten minutes.
And I'm like, it's not getting better.
Like I think it's getting worse.
And I honestly, like there was a level of it's like, like anxiety,
I think has played a huge role in just exactly like how bad my reaction was.
And like now that I'm like kind of on the other side of it.
I mean, I'm definitely happy.
I went to the ER and I definitely do think I needed all of the measures that they gave me.
But I was also okay.
Like I was okay.
I wasn't like not, I was not down to the wire.
Like my tongue was getting big.
Like I was when I would swallow, I could like feel it felt like there was something like,
I felt like I was swallowing like around things, you know?
And there was, I mean, yeah, I mean, there's just something that's so stressful about like
you have four young kids, Tyler's like trying to load them all up into the car.
I'm trying to like catch a deep breath.
I'm trying not to freak the kids out.
I mean, it was genuinely like super, like it was just like that in itself was super traumatizing.
And post, like it's just been like a harder recovery, which I guess is normal.
You know, like when you go into anaphylactic, it's like, it's your immune system freaking out.
And then the EpiPen like does what it's supposed to do, but it also just like sends your immune system haywire.
So like, still a lot of flu like symptoms still kind of trouble, like totally talking and catching my breath.
I'm also on some steroids right now, which suck.
I mean, you like disgusting.
I thought like steroids were supposed to like, I thought they made you feel like so much better.
I thought I was supposed to like get a six pack of taking them.
Like do I not know what steroids are?
Like what is this?
This is sucks.
So I'm on the mend and I feel better today.
Like it was, but it was like four days of like what felt like no improvement.
Like I thought I was better and then like I wasn't better.
But so I'm feeling better.
We did end up canceling our trip to Atlanta this week, which sucked, which I did not want to do.
But I canceled it.
We decided to cancel it for several reasons.
One, I'm not feeling great.
Two, I want to get my allergy test back and I want to meet with an allergist before like I,
or at least feel like I have a better plan with my doctor before like,
I just travel and eat out like disgusting memory.
Not again.
And I have so much brain fog.
Like that's like the worst symptom I have.
I feel like just I'm so, I can feel my mind thinking slowly and the,
and the steroids give me a lot of anxiety.
So five out of 10 today.
The brain fog is the symptom that is the most like spooky for Kelly,
because like you've been sick and pushed through like Kelly can push through a lot,
even when she probably shouldn't like for Kelly to cancel this trip was like a very like,
oh no, something's really wrong.
And it is the brain fog because you in this trip, like you are the talent,
like you had beyond you had to film some stuff and like you couldn't.
You're not in the state to do that.
See, I was like really scary.
It was, yeah, it was scary and I'm not at all saying like what I had was like a near
death experience because again, I was fine.
And I do think I was, I think it like my anxiety was definitely playing in a,
in a role, but when you don't, when you never go through it,
it's like, I don't know how long I have.
Kelly, you keep downplaying it.
There's no reason to downplay it.
Like, like you said, you're at home with your four young children.
You've never experienced this.
Also, I've been doing some research on it because I'm like,
we're all trying to wrap our mind around this.
And like anxiety is a symptom.
So it's not like you're like, oh, my mind was just like,
I just like had such bad anxiety like my mind,
like I couldn't power through it.
Like no anxiety is a symptom of what you were going through.
So it's like you were going through it and it's called anaphylactic shock
because it's a shock to your system.
So your body is going to take time to recover.
So like I'm over this.
I'm not interested in this narrative that you're like,
well, it wasn't that big of it.
Like it was a big deal.
You went through a hard thing.
You're going through a hard thing.
Yeah.
So anyway, thank you for all the nice messages.
Honestly, also, I think you guys saved my life because people were like,
Hey, just so you know, Worcestershire sauce has anchovies in it.
Like the way I would have made a beef stew this week and dumped that in there.
Like kill me.
Like I, so thank you for the messages.
No idea.
No idea.
And I've gotten a lot of good feedback on, you know, looking into like just a
lot of things.
I'm like, I'm waiting to get my allergy panel back, but I've also,
I haven't understanding that like I'm not really going to trust what it says at
the moment because things could be elevated and I need to get in with an
allergist.
Like I've only seen my primary care right now.
Well, the ER doctor, my primary care doctor.
So I'm going to get in with an allergist.
I think I think I'm not, I'm not going to really anything.
I think it's only anchovies or it might be more fish.
But in between Detroit and my reaction, I had shrimp and tuna.
So that's why I think that maybe it's just anchovies, but I'm just going to go
into avoid all efficiency food for the time being for a lot of reasons.
I'm so scared to eat out again.
Like I don't know how I'll ever be able to go to a restaurant and eat out because
I'm also, and I'm not saying like I wish this was one of my kids who had this.
That's not all what I'm saying.
But there would be a level of it that would be less stressful because like how
am I supposed to take my kids out to eat by myself?
Like I'll never do that again.
I can't imagine doing that.
And the other day I was thinking like, you know, like last week I like took George
and Hattie and Fred to out to dinner.
Tell her to be up with me before football.
And it's like, I don't feel like I feel comfortable eating out with my three
small kids because like, what if I have another reaction?
Like, yeah.
And just like the doom, the doom scenarios of like, okay, where am I going to be?
Who's going to take care of my kids?
How am I going to get there?
Like the way I need George to be like 10.
So I could feel like I could like tell him to call 911.
I mean, I know that sounds like so morbid, but my kids are just so little and it's so,
it's honestly like one of my biggest stressors right now.
So, oh my gosh, I'm going to be okay.
And I've talked to, I mean, so many people and people like one of the most helpful things
is it's like, yes, I know it was a big deal, but I also like people telling me like it's
not a big deal.
You know, it's like you have an EpiPen like you're fine now.
Like you're not going to have this again.
And when they did give me the Epi, like it, I mean, it's immediate.
Yeah.
So you could, could you could give yourself an EpiPen, right?
I hate and I think when I have my, I have four EpiPens now, of course insurance like
didn't cover them.
So I had to buy them, but that's okay.
Like I just wanted to buy the four that I wanted to buy at least the two that my pharmacy
had because they didn't, they wouldn't let me leave the ER or they didn't want me to
leave the ER and go home unless I had EpiPens.
So it was a thing.
But anyway, they have it.
They have a tester in the kit.
So like I gave myself the tester.
I know how to do it.
I've talked to Tyler about it.
I'm going to show you how to do them and talk to mom about it.
But yeah.
So now I have EpiPens.
Like now I have to carry a purse, which is just like a whole other thing I'm undertaking
because I'm not really, for as much as I've been like canceled on the internet for having
like one designer bag, I'm not actually a purse girl.
I just like have like my Ander wallet and my cell phone and like that's just kind of
what I roll with.
So yeah, you could say the Louis coming out to play a little bit more because like I need
to fit my EpiPens.
So if you see it in her post, it has one thing and it has two things in it.
An EpiPen and a lip gloss.
Am I?
Yeah, I know.
But I'm actually kind of excited like to think about being a purse girl.
And I feel like I was kind of inevitable because like, you know, the kids are getting older,
Libby's got formula rolling down to like one night, one in diapers.
So like I was on my way out of the diaper bag and I was going to get into the purse era.
So I don't know.
I'm kind of excited about this for me.
Like I'm just going to be a girl who's like, hold on, let me grab my purse.
And I've just never been that girl.
Yeah.
No, you just haven't been that girl for so long because I remember when before I had
kids, I like had my Lululemon fanny pack everywhere I went, everywhere I went.
It had everything I needed in it.
And when you become a mom, you're like diaper bag or just your wallet.
So yeah, I agree.
I think that this is going to be a fun and exciting journey for you.
And it sounds like you deserve a bag.
I think I might buy a purse.
And I think there's like something really chic about having that food allergy.
Yeah.
And I was thinking like anchovies are like, like objectively they're gross.
Like if I was with somebody and they ordered anchovies on their pizza,
like I would think certain things about them.
So like it's just nice that I can be like, oh no, I'm allergic.
Like that's disgusting.
I'm allergic.
Like it's just kind of, there's something kind of chic.
I'm excited to, you know, I also like attention.
So I'm excited when they're like any allergies.
It's like, but I think I'm just going to say fish.
I'm definitely just going to say fish and seafood for the time being.
Yeah.
Um, but I don't know.
I'm, I'm, so I think that's, I'm also just telling myself that.
But yeah, I'm excited to, it's kind of like when you were a kid,
like you wanted glasses, you know, not have a food allergy.
So fun.
So is, are you, are you mourning the loss of Caesar salad?
Not even, not even a little bit.
Like I could care less because I feel and felt, I was so scared.
I feel so bad.
I felt so bad.
I felt like I'm not, no, like it's not even, it's,
I'm not missing it in the slightest.
Like if they tell me I can't have any seafood again.
Okay.
Like that's fine.
No, that's crazy.
That's how you know it's real and you're not being dramatic.
It was so scary.
And it's just like the way that like nothing would ever be worth
feeling like that ever again.
Like whatever it is, I don't want it.
I never want to feel like that again.
And I follow this girl or I've seen this girl on Tik Tok and she's got
something going on, like something serious.
And she can only handle two foods.
Oh, the girl who has formula and oatmeal and oatmeal.
Oh, it's in hypoallergenic formula.
She's trialing carrots.
And it's like, I remember watching that post and my anaphylactic
reaction being like, how does she wake up every morning?
And now I'm like, you know what, I could wake up every morning.
Like that's fine.
I may hope that doesn't happen to me, but like the way that my
perspective has just totally changed on just, oh my gosh, your
health is so important.
And not like not to go in my soapbox, but like you have to
remember the healthy have a hundred wishes and the unhealthy have
one.
Yeah.
And again, it's, I'm telling you, like this experience has
changed me and I have a lot more of a zest and an appreciation
for, it's also like when you come off of like strep throat and
you're like, I'll never complain about being sick again.
Like it's that times a hundred for me right now.
Like I'm so grateful that this is all I have to deal with.
And you know, it's chic.
I'm going to buy myself a new nice bag.
My kids are still going to share a room and it's just like going
to be fine.
I'm going to carry my happy pens.
I'm going to make it.
I'm not going to make my personality, but I'm looking
forward to more testing and yeah.
Wow.
Well, thank you for sharing all of that.
I'm happy to talk about it.
Yeah.
So like the main thing though, it's like I've been so like I've
been in my bed, like in my bed the last four days.
Um, and it's like, it's like when I was like feeling so bad,
like I couldn't even scroll my phone.
So I was like, I just need to like watch TV.
So I started the summer.
I turned pretty.
Have you watched this show?
It's Kelly.
I literally like a few episodes go went on a rant about how it's
such a good show and I love it.
And it's better than Desperate Housewives.
You don't ever call.
Oh my gosh.
I'm sorry.
I was with the brain fog.
This is before you had a reaction.
I know.
I'm having memory loss.
I'm telling you.
I don't remember that.
Sure.
I find it to be blaming things on your brain fog.
Okay.
Now that you say that, I do remember.
I find it to be the most frustrating show.
I actually hate it.
Yeah, I know.
And like, how did you know?
Have you finished it?
Yeah.
Okay.
Let me tell you something like.
And the spoilers, but like Conrad is a horrible character,
a horrible person and I'm not buying it.
It's absolutely ridiculous to think.
Like it's, I've, I literally was like thinking,
watching the show.
It's like, how do I not raise boys to turn out like that guy?
Like the emotional first season.
No, I'm not.
I'm on the third season.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
The third season.
Yeah.
I know all the seasons.
He's so emotionally unavailable.
I've really never liked him.
And I get that he's going through a hard time,
but like going through a hard time is not an excuse to like be manipulative.
And he is so manipulative to the belly.
And it is.
I'm telling you, it's disgusting.
I don't like that art that the teenagers of America are watching this man on camera.
I find him to be horrible.
That is a really hot take.
He's horrible.
Yeah.
I feel like the first season it was like, I got the heartthrob from him.
And then like the thirties, I'm just like, how are we ever going to move past this?
Like how, like you're literally engaged to his brother.
I'm not there yet, but I don't even care.
I'm probably going to be done watching it now that I'm feeling a little better because
I don't even, I have no investment in this at all.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
That's Jeremiah.
He's so kind and he likes her.
And I just think we should be raising girls to pick the guy who likes you.
Like, is that that?
I cannot believe this is a hot take.
And I can't, and I know from, I looked up who she ended up with because obviously I know
that it's Conrad because I just like know how television works.
And I'm so put off by him.
Like, I think he's horrible.
He broke her heart so many times, so emotionally unavailable.
Also like backstabbing his brother.
Like I have no patience for him.
I think he's horrible.
Are you on team Conrad?
Are you being serious?
No, I'm not really, I'm not really on a team because Jeremiah is like such a little frat boy.
Like I don't, I, he's, he's not the guy, he's not the guy in my opinion that you end up with.
But neither is Conrad for that matter.
My problem with Conrad is any, I like his character and I think he's cute except for
when he has his shirt off.
He's so skinny and he's supposed to be this like big, like, I just think he's supposed
to be this like manly guy.
And he's just like, he does not, he does not read that to me.
So I don't find him very attractive in that way.
I mean, Jeremiah is significantly better looking.
Like that's the other thing.
Jeremiah is a pretty, Jeremiah was like casted as like the pretty boy, like very, very well.
Here's the thing.
I, I agree it's frustrating.
I agree the love story is frustrating.
I don't really understand all of it.
Also, but it's good TV.
Also, I don't think it's good TV.
I think it should have been a movie because it's like, why am I calling out with a movie?
No, the whole thing could have been a movie.
Like why am I watching an entire episode of them playing games on the boardwalk?
Like I didn't need the entire, I needed like, it's the slowest burn.
And there's so much unnecessary filler content and so over it.
And I'm just saying like, I also like, are we serious about like a sibling love triangle?
Like it's disgusting.
Like it's disgusting.
This is crazy.
Except the only one who did it right was vampire diaries.
That love triangle I'm still split on.
I don't know who she is.
I don't know what team I'm on there.
I'm on both.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I don't know what part you're at in this show.
I think that you have a much harsher judge on it than I did, but that's fine.
You're entitled to your opinion.
Well, I'm just saying, I just was looking at that show being like, how do I not raise
a Conrad?
That's what I was thinking.
I want my sons to be emotionally available, at least in some capacity.
I mean, I get they're not going to be like, I mean, I get they're still men at the end
of the day, but geez Louise.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
Mm hmm.
Totally.
Hearing a talk makes me like need to take a deep breath.
You're so like breathy.
I know.
I'm honestly fine.
Okay.
Let's all do it together.
Let's all take a deep breath together.
Oh, I'm still on these, I'm still on these freaking steroids and they're like I said,
they're horrible.
And like they're one of their number one symptoms I said told you is anxiety, but I get a drop
down again today and I think I'm going to feel better.
I'm falling off my doctor again.
Everyone rest easy.
Like I'm fine.
I'm taking really good care of myself.
Tyler's taking really good care of me.
Like I've genuinely got to rest.
So I do want to say like any car mom content that we're posting is most likely pre recorded.
Oh, it's we have a lot of pre recorded content that's going out because as you guys know this
week is prime week and we were planning on traveling.
So we actually had a bunch of stuff pre recorded.
So I am excited about the content we're putting out.
We're doing like a toy roundup because I really do kind of think I'm like a bit of a connoisseur
of kids toys.
For sure.
I think I have good toys and I do a good job rotating them.
I don't think my kids I get a lot of compliments on the toys at my house.
I'll just say that.
And I like things that all ages can play with and all genders can play with because like
I have a lot of ages and a lot of gender, you know what I mean.
Yeah, you've got a you've got a good mix.
Um, you have a great taste when it comes to children's toys and I don't think you've got
enough credit for that.
I don't think I do either.
But like, I mean, they have many things like the clip.
Clipboard castle, the Paw Patrol Tower.
Now I'm all about this Fisher price bus that I just got that you can still get on Amazon.
That's been a hit of a toy in our house.
A hit of a toy.
So anyway, you can watch for my prime day toy roundup.
We've got some home stuff we're posting.
Um, I'm excited.
Also, we had a huge day yesterday because how you lost your first tooth.
Yeah.
It was, I pulled it out.
Disgusting.
Yeah.
But like the way she was playing with it in her mouth was so unbelievably nauseating.
Like I couldn't even look at her and I kept thinking she lost it because she'd be like
talking and it was like so hanging down.
Oh gosh.
No.
Horrible.
So I pulled it out and the tooth area brought $5, $5 for the first one.
I know that's controversial.
Literally no matter what, here's a trope that just needs to die on the internet.
No matter how much money the tooth area brings the kid, there's always parents being like
what?
That's so much for it.
It's like, okay.
In this economy, like what?
The tooth area.
Inflation.
You have to consider inflation rates.
So she gives $5 for the first and then just like a couple of dollars for all the other teeth.
But our tooth area doesn't seem really special because it's a glitter $5 bill.
Ooh.
Yeah.
That's how you know it's legit.
That's how you know it's legit.
So that was exciting.
And that's kind of like all we really have going on.
Haddie's birthday is coming up.
It is.
And we're having a party.
I'm really excited about, I really like when kids party, kids birthday parties have an
activity.
I don't think that's a hot tick.
I think it's all like what are you going to do with all these kids?
But the activity I chose, which feels like, and I haven't decided also how many birthday
parties I'm going to have for my kids.
It's not going to be an every year thing.
I think I'm going to start doing five, eight, 10 and 13 for like big parties.
I don't know why I feel like eight feels kind of big.
And then they kind of get one every two years, you know?
Okay.
Or every two to three years.
So five, eight, 10 and 13.
I think I was talking to Naptime Kitchen about this.
Anyway, it's five.
So I'm going to do a big one for her.
And I hired a face painter.
$75 for the hour.
That's pretty good.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
But she's like a face painter.
Like not just like a cheat.
So how many hours is she there at the four?
You think she's only there for one hour?
I think she's only there for one hour.
Okay.
But I'm hoping she can do like the 13 kids in one hour.
Yeah, I don't know.
If not, then it's not going to pencil.
Yeah.
But I'm having a face painter and then my niece is doing hair tinsel.
Nice.
And then they want to play ships and sailors, which is a game had he learned at
the rules to ships and sailors.
Yeah.
I've never, I'm not familiar.
Oh, yeah.
You remember, we used to play it at the Limburg cheerleader camp where they're like,
you go ships, sailors, and you like run to each side.
And then it's like three men rowing and you have to like get in a pair of three.
Oh, yeah.
You remember that game?
Yeah, I do.
So she really wants to play that.
And I'm excited.
I want to get a megaphone.
I think I would use a megaphone.
Maybe there will be a one on sail for prime day.
Don't you just think like if I had one, I'd use it.
I think it's one of those things.
I'm sure you would use any excuse to whip out the megaphone.
Yeah.
When an opportunity presented itself.
Anyway, I thought it was kind of, I felt like 75 dollars for the activity felt like
kind of a value.
And I'm not doing food.
I'm doing just a cake.
It's three to five with a face painter.
Come on by.
Okay.
Not doing food makes it feel a lot more attainable.
Well, it's just like, and here's the problem.
Had he's only five, so I'm assuming a lot of the parents are saying, and I also, I,
and this is just kind of like where I live, but like siblings are always welcome.
Cause like my other kids are going to be there.
So like, I want your kids to stay too.
And like, that's crazy.
I'm not going to like ask parents to like split up or like, I also just need the only
should spend, spend more time together.
So I like to include siblings.
But by that point, it's like, I invite one of her friends and they come with five of
their people.
Like they're like, we got big, we got big Catholic families around here.
Like I just can't be doing, everyone has had a lot of kids.
Yeah.
So normally, normally is not having to have the food.
I think that's amazing.
Yeah.
So three to five cup and that's why I did three to five.
So it's in the afternoon.
So sorry you're spoiling your dinner, but that's a birthday party for you.
Yeah.
That's when it worked out.
Yeah.
But her and then she wants to have like the bunnies out.
So then we're going to have the bunnies out and like, it's just kind of random.
It's like a bunny ships and sailors face painting birthday party.
I think it sounds like extravaganza extravaganza.
I guess this is the first time hearing of it is how do you at the age where like aunts
and uncles don't necessarily aren't necessarily.
No, I thought I didn't.
I thought I did text the family.
Did I not?
I don't know.
Okay.
Well, I'll text you the details.
Maybe I'm having brain fog now.
I'll text you the details.
No, no, you're, you're definitely invited and yeah, bring the kids.
Okay.
We're getting face painters.
I am worried though that this girl, he pops going to have to stay for an hour and then
it's not going to pencil as well.
See, that's what I'm worried with.
That's what I'm worried about.
Like how legit of a face painter is there?
Is she seen her portfolio was impressive.
Is it a full face?
It's like a half face.
Like if you ask for the tiger, like, you know, it comes down over your nose.
Yeah.
I think that's fine.
I agree.
I'm sure she's pretty quick because if you're like, if you are at like, I paid her flat
rate, but like, if you're at like a vending place, then like, you got to be able to whip
them out.
You're not making a lot of money.
That's true.
But you can't take 15 minutes.
You know, true, true, true.
Okay.
I just feel like 50 was felt better to me.
But I don't know.
I've never looked up.
I just, I don't have like a really good writer on like entertainment prices.
Mm hmm.
You know, maybe it's just like, and I tried to get freaking, here's something I tried
to get like, talk about prices.
Right.
So we're having like a big party, like a big family party coming up like at our parents
farm.
It's going to be like a huge shindig.
And I was like, Oh, I'm going to see if I can get like a kettle corn person to come
to like pop kettle corn, like when that's big fun to do at the farm party.
I got some kettle corn quotes, kettle corn quotes, thousands of dollars for kettle corn.
The way that I thought I'd be able to get someone to sit there for an afternoon and
pop kettle corn for $300 at the most, that was like, it was like $3,000.
I'm like, Oh, no, thanks.
No, that's overpriced.
Yeah.
I mean, are people paying that?
I mean, I guess.
I mean, it's a lot of bags of popcorn.
Well, that's what I'm saying.
I think what it comes down to is like, it just takes a lot to make actually make kettle
corn.
Like we think it's just bags of popcorn, but I think like the actual art of kettle
corn.
Mm hmm.
It's like more intensive to do.
I'm guessing.
I don't know.
I don't pay for that.
I just find that interesting.
I would be so bad.
I feel like I'm normally pretty good at guessing prices of things like appliances.
Cars am I obviously good at, but like services, services are so tough.
They're so it's what they cost.
And then like, what are people willing to pay?
Yeah.
And if people are willing to pay that for kettle corn, that's kind of surprising to
me.
Well, I think that's good for all of us to know.
Side house all summer.
Maybe start a kettle corn business.
Yeah.
And just like, don't get into the art of kettle and corn and just like go buy bags of
popcorn and hand it out.
You can set up something that makes it look like you're kettling corn.
Like, who's going to know?
No, I kettled it.
I kettled it.
And I just brought in this cute popcorn machine that I got on Facebook Marketplace.
They're not going to know who's going to know.
Anyway, free idea.
Yeah, that's interesting.
Well, we have some programming, programming updates.
I want to get to we do have some programming updates.
So like not to bore you with the details, but basically with our recording schedule
and our episode release, we are not getting our episodes out in time to have our ad company
like upload them and place all the ads.
So basically, like we're, it just doesn't, it doesn't work.
We're missing out on, like we're not getting the the prop.
Am I having brain fog?
We're not, we're not, we're not meeting the numbers for the ads because they're not
in jeopardy.
We're in jeopardy.
The podcast is in jeopardy.
Whatever.
We have to, we have long.
So anyway, whatever the ads ads is the problem.
So what we have to do is we like to keep our Monday recording because then we can talk
about the weekend and it's, it's more up to date and everything.
But with that being said, if we're going to record on Mondays, then we can't release
an episode on Tuesday.
So now we're like, let's just release on Wednesday and Friday.
Yeah.
And does that like rock everyone's world?
Is everyone okay with that?
Like that's what the solution we came up with.
So starting next week, we're going to come out on Mondays and Fridays.
Yeah.
And that's just that.
I think everyone's going to be fine with that.
Listen, listen at your leisure.
We're sorry you're going to have to wait a little bit longer into your week, but like
then we'll really be able to help you out on your Fridays where I think people need it
like going into the weekend.
Well, a lot of podcasts, I feel like don't come out on Fridays.
Totally.
So also, if you stop skipping our ads, that would be helpful too.
You could just listen.
I'm not sure if it is.
We're not sure.
Okay.
I have something I wanted to talk about also.
So what was the segment where we like talked about the content?
I have a content.
We were, I have a content plate.
I have a person to share and I have a fast lane philosophy.
Okay.
So I started following this girl.
First of all, I am on TikTok and I did have a lot of TikTok time while I was bedridden.
And I started following this girl called Nicole sevens S V E N S O N.
Okay.
She has two kids and her husband and she has a $300 a month grocery budget and she only
goes grocery shopping once a month and it's her whole personality.
It's a macro hobby of hers.
And she just shares like all the ways that she like cooks at home only spends $300 and
only goes grocery shopping once a month.
And I don't feel a need to like adapt all of that, but I'm telling you some of her content
has been so inspiring and so like, I'm, I'm obsessed.
Like she's doing a great job turning, turning out the content.
And one of the things that one of the fast finance philosophies that she said is she's
like, we're not out of food.
We're out of convenience.
Like there's no, there's nothing else here that's convenient.
I have to actually cook.
So she made her own hot dog buns.
Like that's crazy.
That's crazy.
She made her own hot dog buns.
She's like making her own bread bowls.
She is making like, she's just doing a really good job and she's just like normalizing normal
freaking dinner, which I feel like we always talked about, we always talk about, but sometimes
it's just a protein veggie and a sergeant.
Like that's fine.
Yeah.
It's not always, you know, it's just like, it's just Amelia you're feeding like, I don't
know, have a lemonade or a diet cocoa on the side.
If you need a little bit more sauce, you know, just have pork chops and broccoli.
Like that's a fine dinner.
Yeah.
So I've been really inspired by her and one of the things that she does, she makes a lot
of her own bread, like just like all kinds of bread.
And one like micro hobby that I'm going to like kind of start like dipping my toes into
this kind of like kind of be a crazy thing.
I'm going to say, but like one of my goals for this all is I'd like to learn how to make
more bread.
Ask things that aren't sourdough because they're such everyone like so obsessed with sourdough,
but there's so many other types of bready things to make.
Mm hmm.
That don't take 48 hours.
Um, yeah.
I mean, you can just like do use like yeast.
Well, that's what I'm saying.
And she's like making hamburger buns like in 40 minutes.
And it's like, well, I could have 40 minutes to make my own hamburger buns.
Yeah.
Like that sounds good.
Yeah.
Um, I agree.
I kind of love that.
Um, I'm getting gearing up to get back into my sourdough era though.
And that is because listen to this, I'm going to redo this message.
Um, so I've been meeting some girls in my neighborhood and one of them invited me to
a party and it's with other like moms in the neighborhood.
I'm so excited to meet everyone.
And I'm sure there's an activity.
Sips and sourdough party.
I'm obsessed.
I'll give you your own starter, teach you how to keep it alive and how to make a sourdough
loaf just in time for soup season.
I'll have different loaves to taste, soup to dip it in and sips of course.
So it's a soup.
So I have to like kind of pretend like I'm into soup, but I am into soup when it's on
the vehicle of sourdough for sure.
Um, I don't like soup when it's on the vehicle of like a spoon.
Um, so what a fun idea.
Soup sourdough sips.
Oh my gosh.
First of all, like start to finish.
I'm, I'm, I'm taking notes of this girl.
Uh-huh.
Was it like a, was like a PDF invitation that she texted?
No, she just DM'd me.
So I've actually, she, her and I have been messaging because of like, she met Maddie and
then we, she added me on like Instagram and Facebook and so anyway, I like just met her
for the first time, but she sent me this message before I'd even ever met her in person.
And then when I met her in person, she's like, Oh yeah, I've got this person, like probably
five other women in the neighborhood coming and she's just like getting the neighborhood
girls together.
She's getting community.
She's like, she's getting a village.
You have to be a villager if you want a village.
I'm obsessed.
I know.
So I'm really excited.
So now I'm going to challenge you.
You're throwing the next party.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I want you to do what I do, which is like the makeup party, the makeup and flat bread
party that I did last year.
The makeup and flat bread where everyone brings their favorite beauty product.
It's just like fun.
It's like, it's a robbery neighbor, but just beauty products and you make flatbreads.
Yeah.
And it's so fun.
Like the bit I find that like one of the biggest treats as a parent is to be in your house
with other adults without kids.
Like it just feels like it feels so special because like if you go out to dinner, like,
you know, now that that's not fun, but it doesn't feel as crazy as like being in your
home, hosting without kids.
Like that is, that is so aspirational.
So fun.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And now I want you to do that in my house.
I like never want to leave.
I love being here.
I can't wait to host.
So I think but you just need to take the plunge and you have an activity and if you want,
you put a time limit on it.
You say girls come over from six to eight.
We're going to do a little rob your neighbor and have some flatbreads.
Like it's so easy.
That's a good idea.
I want to throw out some other good ideas is I've said this before, but the flower making
go by a bunch of flowers from Trader Joe's.
Lay them out, build your own bouquet.
That's fun, especially in seasonal and you get to leave with a little treat.
Another one that because Grayson was like, oh, you should have all of us over for a party
now that you moved into your house.
And I was playing with the idea of like, what if I got a bunch of little mini paint like
Frida's and we all did like little mini paint by numbers.
That's another activity.
I've also seen paint your own olive oil canister kits on the internet.
So just like, let's do like, I love something you go and then you take something home with
you.
Like I'm so excited to get the sourdough starter.
Totally.
So I think it goes back to like my hosting episode of like, if you are nervous to host,
like have the activity, have the meal, text that ahead of time, expectations are set.
And it's like no big deal.
Yeah.
And that's why I'm excited about this because I, I know what to expect.
I know what I can like bring like, you know, I know, obviously now we know that she drinks.
So I like bringing a bottle of wine would be an appropriate gift.
We should talk about hostess gifts and like if they're necessary, your opinion on them,
what, what are good ones?
Yeah.
I think that like etiquette wise, it's probably, it doesn't hurt to like bring a candle, bring
a bottle of wine.
Like it doesn't have to be anything extravagant, bring flowers even.
Yeah.
It's a nice gesture.
I would agree.
I think it's a nice gesture too.
Yeah.
I think a consumable makes a little bit more sense sometimes.
Like I think it depends on the situation.
But like if I was having like my friend over and her family for dinner and they brought
a candle, I'd be like, okay, you really didn't have to do that.
Like you didn't have to do that.
But I do think it's like, hey, I'm going to like, you know, I brought some cookies and
I brought like some extra for you guys to, you know, have later this week.
Like I think that's so nice.
You know?
Yeah.
Okay.
I see.
But I'm like obsessed with this girl.
I'm so proud of her.
I have so, I'm telling you, I have so much respect for people who host and who just make some
razzle-dazzle.
And I just really want the carpoolers to be a group of girls who are razzle and dazzling.
And we're just inviting people into our home, community conversation, good friends.
We really need more personal connection in this world.
I think that's like, that's my platform.
Yeah.
I want more people to just connect.
I agree.
And I think everyone's craving it and someone just has to be the one to do it.
Someone just has to be the one to do it.
Okay.
Are you ready for industry news where we spill the hot tea going on the auto industry?
There's, honestly, not a lot going on in the auto industry, but there's a lot going on
in the car mom world.
First of all, my press card this week, Toyota Grand Highlander, I think yes.
Super excited to play in this one.
I just, I'm always looking to spend more time in Toyotas.
Whenever I get the chance, I always jump at it.
Okay.
You know?
Yeah, totally.
I'm very excited about this one.
But before that, let's do industry news.
We have some, we have an XTERRA update.
Ooh.
Hit me.
Confirmed.
The Nissan XTERRA is coming back.
It will return as a hybrid, not surprising.
It will be built starting in 2028.
So we're looking at 2029 model year.
What a slow burn.
And it looks good.
It looks good.
It looks like they're debuting it in yellow, which I think is a mistake.
But, you know, they're just always trying to do something here.
I'll send you the story.
It kind of looks like the Santa Fe and the Ford Bronco sport had a baby.
Okay.
I need to see this.
I'm not finding this.
20.
Oh.
Yeah.
You don't like it?
Hmm.
It's not my favorite looking.
It's not my favorite looking, but I just think it looks a little smaller.
It looks like a Ford Bronco sport, which is actually, which is ironically my other
press car I have this week, which is like, I'm sorry, such a snooze.
I literally can't.
That car is so silly to me.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Sure.
Yeah, it looks fine.
You're happy with it?
I'm okay with it.
Okay.
I mean, who knows?
Honestly, like by 2029, like,
What's that?
I have no idea.
I know.
Who knows what's going on?
I mean, 2029 seems so long from now.
So crazy.
Like pretty soon we'll be saying 2026.
Like what?
I know.
It's so wild.
Life is so crazy like that.
So crazy.
Okay.
Next, we have just the drive through where we share an easy dinner recipe to mix it
up to get you out of your dinner rut.
And it is Crock Toe Burr week two.
First, let's recap our week one episode or our week one recipe where we made
Yes.
Crock Pot chicken and dumplings.
I enjoyed.
Yeah.
I, my notes for the recipe were, I didn't like that the carrots, I think the veggies
just could have been put in a lot earlier because I just like felt like the timing was
off.
I didn't, I didn't have that experience.
So I don't know.
Maybe I was just like hungry and ready to eat.
And I was like, I know what I was waiting on the carrots to be done.
Cause like the chicken was cooked.
And I just feel like once the chicken's cooked, like I want to be able to eat.
Yeah.
So I was waiting for that.
I cut my biscuits up to bite, bite, bite size pieces.
It was good.
I ended up adding a little bit more chicken stock because it was just giving like slop.
Like I wouldn't have described it as soup.
No, it was slop.
And I was looking for more of a soup.
So I liked it.
But I don't think I will make that chicken and dumplings recipe again.
I'm looking for an award winning chicken and dumplings recipe.
Like I tell our parents church one day they did like a chicken and dumplings like competition.
I'm interested in going to those grannies and figuring out what their recipe was and
getting those.
See I, it's interesting we had such different opinions on it because I like wrote the recipe
down and put it in my recipe binder.
Like I was like, this works.
This is good.
This is a comfort meal.
I like it.
It was easy.
And that's fine.
I think I'm a bit more of a soup kind of sore than you.
So I think I have a higher, I think I have a higher level.
I don't have ever eaten.
I don't think I've ever formally eaten chicken and dumplings either.
So I was like, oh yeah, this is good.
Well, and the flavor was there.
And I mean, it's fun to eat like a doughy biscuit that like has a lot of good seasoning on it.
Like it was wrong about that.
My kids liked it.
I mean, everyone ate it.
Like everyone was happy to eat it.
I just think for me, I don't like that the dish looked so ugly.
I think was like kind of a, I would never serve.
I would never serve that if I had people over.
Like, I know it tastes good, but like, I think I should be able to say like, hey, come over.
I'm making chicken and dumplings.
And I don't feel like I can say that yet.
And that's just kind of like my level.
What is the next?
What, what are we making next on?
October?
I'm so glad you asked.
So this week's crocktober is crockpot butter chicken.
Let's go.
So butter chicken.
I like this one because it's, it's a bit more of a, it's, it's an Indian dish.
So, you know, it's not so you make butter chicken on another crocktober.
We made now have kitchen's honey butter chicken.
And it was very different, very different.
Like this is Indian food.
So you're going to do chicken, like all the seasonings.
You're going to have to get something called, you know, you're going to have to get turmeric,
cumin, gram masala, like all those things.
Okay.
We're doing chicken thighs, which I love chicken thighs.
You're going to add some cream, a third of cup of chopped cilantro.
They say optional.
I say not because I think you need to, I think you need some color in the dish.
So I'm really going to encourage you.
If you like cilantro, don't skip that step.
Non and cooked rice.
Okay.
I'm probably going to do it with a side of broccoli.
Okay.
I don't know how it's going to go over with my family.
I don't think they've ever had the flavor profile before, but I'm looking forward to it.
I'm not sure I've ever had this flavor profile before.
I've made you butter chicken before at my house and my old house.
One time we had it.
Okay.
I don't remember it.
It's kind of like you want it to be orange chicken, but it's not, but it's a lot healthier.
You know what I mean?
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's like my interesting opinion.
So I'm excited to try it.
I think we're all stretching ourselves in the kitchen this week.
I am for sure.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, thank you so much for that.
Okay Kelly.
So now it's going to be time for Blake's besties where we read stories from our followers
during pregnancy and infant loss awareness month, um, reading about their babies that
they lost too soon.
So if you don't want to hear those stories, see, uh, we'll talk to you on Tuesday.
Um, but if you would like to listen, we're going to read a few stories.
Okay.
I will go first.
This comes from Chelsea.
Dear Kelly and Liz.
My husband and I lost our baby at 18 weeks gestation.
We found out there was no heartbeat on the day of our anatomy scan.
The day we were supposed to find out the gender through this immense shock and pain God met
me in my heartbreak.
I wrestled with naming our baby after she passed.
I knew I wanted to give her life dignity and meaning.
I always wanted to name a baby Teddy, but wasn't sure if it was right for a girl's name.
One morning I asked our three year old what he thought we should name his little sister
in heaven.
He gave me a couple random three year old answers like fan and dog.
And I thought, okay, we're the shot and moved on.
Then he looked me right in the eye and said, Teddy, I looked around the room to see if
there were any teddy bears around and there wasn't.
We hadn't talked to him about this name at all.
He proceeded to say, and I think me, mom is taking care of the baby.
My me, mom's name was joy and passed away a year prior.
Our baby's name is Teddy joy.
And I will think of her and I will love her every day until I see her again in heaven.
I feel like, how are these not like, I'm sorry, like made up stories.
Like that is the cutest, like most unbelievable thing.
I love the more we read these stories, like hearing the siblings.
Yes.
So it's hard to hear the siblings connect with their siblings.
And I think there's also like, it's so important for, for, for, for the children
to like know that it's a safe place for them to talk about this.
Cause like they also lost a sibling, like in the same way.
I mean, it's just, oh my gosh.
Yeah.
Oh, amazing.
Hi, this is from Madison.
Hi, Kelly and Liz.
First off, I want to say thank you for continuing these stories.
In December of last year, we lost our second daughter, Letty Pearl at 12 weeks.
Our first born daughter had been longing for a sibling as it took us a while to get pregnant with Letty
and losing her was the worst pain we felt as a family.
Now that time has passed, we have found a new normal and we talk about Letty on a regular basis
and spend time admiring her beautiful earn that sits in our home.
We think when I think about my pregnancy with Letty now, I remember many bowls of cereal,
specifically Captain Crunch that I couldn't get enough of.
She may not be here with us now, but I have the image of her sweet little hands in my mind and heart
and we'll spend every day loving her just the same.
Thank you for reading and sharing these stories.
Madison.
The cereal craving is so real.
Letty is a really cute name.
Letty and Teddy.
Letty and Teddy.
So cute.
Yeah, it's just like that one just reminded me a lot of Blake's besties and why we do it
and Blake's mom, Rachel, does not ever forget about her.
And one thing that Rachel does that I think is really cool is when she orders a Starbucks or a drink
and they ask for a name, she says Blake.
So it's just a nice way that she can hear the name because it's obviously a name that you have thought about
and have loved and wanted to hear.
I'm so happy you brought that up.
I love that Rachel does that.
Yeah, that story kind of reminded me of how she was like, we'll never forget her and we think about her all the time.
That's such a good idea.
Okay, this one comes from Leslie.
Leslie.
He gave us two beautiful healthy baby girls.
We were full of gratitude for a long time.
My husband and I weren't sure about trying for a third child.
My pregnancies were so hard, but one night God gave me a dream.
I was holding a baby boy and two daughters standing beside me in a simple empty hospital room.
Nothing else was there.
Just me, my daughters, the baby and feeling God's love.
The dream stayed with me when our youngest was almost two.
We felt ready.
I took a pregnancy test.
It was positive and we were overjoyed.
We kept it a secret hoping to surprise our families on Mother's Day the following month on May 1st,
2024.
I celebrated my birthday with my family at Baskin Robbins and I remember feeling something was off because I was not yet nauseous.
On May 6th, while I was at work, I began to miscarry.
The pain was unbearable and yet right there in the middle of the hardest day of my life, I felt God's presence in peace more strongly than ever before.
Even in my loss, he was holding me, his child.
That Mother's Day, instead of sharing our news of joy, we shared our news of heartbreak.
I held on more tightly to my own children.
A few days after that, on May 15th, a striking crimson cardinal appeared in our backyard.
Day after day, week after week, he came back and I knew in my heart it was God's reminder my baby was safe in heaven and God was holding me.
He was my symbol of hope.
Not long after the Lord gave us another miracle, we were pregnant again.
I had never been so thankful to be vomiting while pregnant.
Perspective changes everything.
On Ash Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, our rainbow baby, Elizabeth Grace, her name is a testimony.
Elizabeth means God's promise.
Grace is the abundance of his grace poured over us.
Just as in Scripture, Elizabeth was a faithful woman who recognized Jesus as Lord and Mary's womb.
Our daughter's life is a reminder that God is faithful to his promises.
And guess what else?
The week we brought Elizabeth Grace home, our cardinal showed up every single day, needless to say, chills and tears only God.
One more thing, on iPhone memories, saved exactly three years before my miscarriage on May 6th, 2021, I had taken a video of a beautiful red cardinal dancing in our yard.
God had given me a sign before I knew I would need it.
Oh my gosh.
I know, I can't believe I actually made it through that one without crying.
