The Aston Martin Rapide is a luxury four-door car made by Aston Martin. It’s designed to feel sporty to drive while still being comfortable for everyday use. In the podcast, it’s mentioned as a particular model.
“5” isn’t enough information to know which car you mean. Car models usually have a full name (like make + model), and “5” could refer to many different vehicles. If you share the surrounding words, I can explain the correct car.
The 2024 S650 Mustang is the newest version of the Ford Mustang. “S650” is just Ford’s way of labeling this generation of the car, so it helps enthusiasts tell which Mustang redesign they mean.
A Shelby Mustang is a Mustang that’s been upgraded by Shelby to be faster and more performance-oriented. It’s still a Mustang, but with changes meant to improve how it drives. The podcast is likely referencing it as part of the Shelby owner community.
The Shelby GT350 is a special, more performance-focused version of the Mustang. It’s made to drive harder and handle better than a standard Mustang. That’s why owners often get together around this model.
LIVE
Hello everybody and welcome to this very special episode of the Mustang owners podcast.
went to the museum.
Oui.
Ils ont went to an extensive restoration in 2016.
Oui, oui.
Où est-ce qu'il y a?
Ok, donc Mike, donc Ryan Gerardo.
Gerardo.
Donc, fast forward to the spring of 1993,
I'm a fresh faced airman at Little Rock Air Force Base reporting for duty.
When I see it, a cherry red LX 5-0 coupe gleaming in the parking lot
like a beacon of poor financial decisions.
Which it was.
Yes, the dormant gearhead goblin in my soul awoke with a screech.
Unfortunately, my finances at the time consisted of instant ramen
and a profound misunderstanding of interest rates.
So a horse of my own remained firmly out of reach.
Life went on.
But not for Mike Ray, who has a 93 FoxBuddy.
In fact, your FoxBuddy is still here.
In the museum.
So then 30 years later, what happens to poor Ryan?
Well, he sees a new 2024 S650 Mustang 30 years later.
And you think the guy be over it by now, right?
Yeah, right.
Nobody says that was it.
My inner 11 year old had enough, he had enough.
He kicked on the door to my sensible adult brain
and screamed, we're doing this.
How many of you can relate to that?
So if you see the S650, you just get, you know what?
I've waited long enough.
I gotta have it.
So Ryan, we get it.
Then he did something which you should talk about
because you're a Ford salesman.
Yeah.
So the first thing he did wrong is that he called his Ford salesman Chris.
My name is Mike.
So that's what you're supposed to call first.
He being the devil on my shoulder I needed.
Recommended I go to Ford's website to just look.
No, you don't look.
No, you desire.
Speck out your dream car, he said.
We can talk numbers when it gets here.
The logic was flawless.
I'm turning 50 this year, so time is running out to be this irresponsible.
Well, guess what happened Mike?
Later that day, there I was tongue out,
brow furrowed in concentration,
clicking options like a kid assembling a puzzle.
Performance pack?
Yes.
Obnoxiously loud exhaust?
Absolutely.
Après an hour of fiscally questionable choices,
I get submit.
Yes.
And apparently that unleashed his creation upon the Ford Motor Company.
So that actually puts in your order?
No, actually the salesman has to put in the order through there,
but he has to submit it to you and then you can create the order there
and get our approval and then it will be pushed to Ford.
Tell them what happened after that.
So the following months were a master class and obsession.
The Vin had been created.
I whisper to myself, it's in the paint shop.
Final assembly is complete.
It was like a tracking of pregnancy only with more horsepower.
So once you put your order in,
Ford is going to send you a confirmation email
that they had received your order.
And then depending on what vehicle line is
and how quick they're building and when it's getting scheduled,
you will get a follow-up email from Ford saying
this is your scheduled date with your new Vin number.
So it'll give you basically the week,
they try to pinpoint to the day,
but it's usually the week that it's going to be built.
Or it'll say it's still on delay,
we'll check back with you in our 30 to 45 days
and give you another update.
As a sales guy,
they should keep you updated on any information on Ford
with the new vehicle order.
So keep you updated on it.
So hey, your vehicle is going to build on June 3rd
and it should be back here to the dealership
in three weeks after that,
depending on where the dealership is located.
Lucky for Ryan, he didn't have a lot of delays
because he said, you know, the delivery day finally arrived.
And that's exciting for anybody.
So everybody knew Mustang, even a used one.
He said, shrouded in secrecy.
So he didn't say anything about this.
My wife blissfully unaware of my treachery
was on her way to pick up her new car.
A very sensible 2023 Ford Escape.
So he's telling his wife, Mike,
let's go pick up your escape at the dealer.
I had, through a stunning act of cowardice,
not yet mentioned to her the Mustang.
Can you believe he got away with that?
So here he goes.
And then what does he say?
As we pulled into the dealership, there it was.
My car.
Ryan, you dog you.
So you're still married.
No.
So what does his wife say?
What did you buy?
As the seatbelts inertia really locked her in place
with the force of a fighter jet maneuver.
He said, okay, look, I stammered appointing frantically.
Chris made me do it.
He gave me the website and then went nuts.
He's an enabler.
So what happened?
So the air in the showroom was thick enough
to cut a knife when we walked in.
Chris greeted us completely missing
the marital storm cloud overhead.
Hey, good news and bad news,
he said cheerfully.
The Mustang is here,
but I couldn't get the red seatbelts.
Chris, I hissed through a clenched smile.
She just found out about the car.
Read the room.
Well, he said, we shared a nervous laugh.
I turned to my wife preparing to deploy
every ounce of charm I had left.
And she just stared at the car.
Then back at me, a slow smile spreading across her face.
So you bought a Mustang, eh?
Well, at least it's not another woman or booze.
Yeah, that's why I always say.
So, Mike, why don't you close that story from Mr. ...
Just like that, I had my car and a green light.
My Mustang story has come a long way,
finally satisfying that little boy from 1984.
And apparently I have one get out of jail free card left.
That's the great stories that we want to hear.
Please keep submitting them to us guys.
We want to bring these to you as often as possible.
Now, Ryan Gerardo,
obviously you have a talent for writing.
That was really fun.
You don't have to make it that detailed
or you bet you can.
That was wonderful.
Thank you, Ryan, for sending that in.
And so we want to see your Mustang story.
Send it to me directly at jcloreatcarsincontext.com.
But Mike, we're not done.
No, no more.
You know, one thing we do know
and understand from you every month
that we get people saying we love the mail bags.
What is it about that?
The feedback on the mail bag has been absolutely just amazing.
Everybody loves it.
They all want us to do them a little bit more.
We try to do them once a month,
but the feedback has been great.
So we may have to do these more a little bit once a week,
maybe read one or two a week.
So to close our brand new Mustang Roundup
special edition of the Mustang Image Podcasts,
we're going to read a couple of letters here.
I'll take the first one.
So this is our Mustang mail bag to close the show today.
And it's a Dear John letter.
Do you ever get one of those?
I've heard them up.
I just got it.
Does Jenny know about that?
I'm not sure.
Dear John,
I've got a million dollar idea for you guys.
A million dollar.
You guys listening on the podcast?
Good cause we need it.
He said, really?
Here we go.
For every podcast you have a segment,
maybe 10 minutes.
And all it is,
photos or vids of a Mustang owners
telling you about their car.
Wait a minute.
Ryan, did you hear that?
Okay.
You tell the details of the car
and the owner's name,
you get an option of location.
Have them tell their Mustang story.
You can do it in 50 words unless you want.
And maybe have entire clubs
send you pics of their cars
until I'll load your video
to show off their Mustang story.
You can thank me later
for this great idea, Mike.
Signed by your favorite viewer
from California,
Paul knew it.
I gotta say,
he's gotta be probably
one of our number one fans.
Paul, that was a great idea.
But as you could tell,
Ryan beat you to it.
Our by Mustang story feature
I think was wonderful today.
We'd like to have a lot of them.
But thank you, Paul.
Is it a million dollar idea?
Maybe a couple bucks worth.
Yeah, right?
Might get you a Coke.
Okay.
And the first one's already under the bell?
Yeah, you.
Oh, thank you, Paul.
So, do you have one?
Yeah, I got one here.
I'm gonna share it with you.
So, John and Mike,
I just watched your Mustang
owner's podcast with Chuck Cantwell.
I remembered his name
but had not heard about him
for a while.
Here's an idea from Mike.
Okay.
What about having Mocsom
host the Shelby GT350 reunion
on the Thursday
before the Woodward Dream Cruise?
Or maybe even at the Dream Cruise
on Mustang Alley West
with Chuck Cantwell
and anybody else
from the original Shelby days
and attendance?
Hum.
Hum.
I could bring a bunch
of GT350
and 350H diecast cars,
at least.
He doesn't have the real one.
Yes, right.
Also, though,
you'd enjoy the pic taken
with D. Allen
when I visited Lee Holman
at the Holman Moody shop
in Charlotte.
And he sends a picture.
We'll show you this picture
on the shop of he
getting his car
signed by Lee Holman.
Yeah.
So, Mike,
GT350 reunion.
So, Gary,
I will,
I don't know if you've known
but I did step down
as president there.
I'm still very close
with the board of directors
with Maxim.
So,
I will share this information
with them
and see if it's up
that they can fit into their schedule
this year
as a good idea.
I think so.
Yeah, they're very receptive
to everything there
to try to make their show
and they're a week very special.
So, I will forward
that information to them
and we'll see what we can do.
And Chuck,
I mean, you did a great boss
reunion from Maxim.
I remember there was
a great guy.
That was one of my favorite shows
ever was the boss reunion.
And to your point,
and this was by Gary Allen.
Gary,
to your point about bringing
diecasts,
you know,
back in COVID days
when I couldn't go to car shows,
for Ford racing,
I did what we call
the tabletop car show.
And people got their diecasts out,
put them on the table
and sent us pictures
and people voted on their car show.
So,
if you'd like to have diecasts car shows
on the Mustang Irish podcast,
we can do that too.
These are great ideas,
great letters,
thanks for everybody
that sent them in
or made a comment
on any of our videos
on the Mustang Irish podcast.
Mike,
it was a fun Mustang roundup today.
So, tell us guys,
what do you think?
Do you like it?
Do you like this new format?
If so, let us do it.
So, we're going to keep going
moving forward with it.
That's right.
We can do this every time,
every other time,
once a month,
whatever you like.
We just love making sure
that you have your Mustang story
heard on the Mustang Irish podcast.
So, Mike,
thanks again.
Thanks for your time tonight.
Until next time, folks,
we'll just have to catch you
down the road.
About this episode
Hosts kick off a “Mustang Roundup” special, mixing community stories, event talk, and a behind-the-scenes look at ordering a performance Mustang. They debate how much tech to show, arguing for simple buttons over screen hunting. Listener mailbag ideas include a segment built around owner photos and videos. The show also covers a 50th-anniversary event at Carlyle Ford Nationals, a twin-turbo “505 Cubacage Ford BigBug,” and a humorous dealership reveal tied to a long-held dream from 1984.
We asked, you responded, and we listened. So here it is – an ALL-NEW format for our Mustang Owner’s Podcast that incorporates several different aspects of the Mustang hobby all in a single, fast-paced episode that we call the “Mustang Roundup.” Why did we try this? Because we’d received so many emails about how we can keep growing the Mustang Owner’s Podcast that we thought it’s time to test out some format enhancements. You’ll recall that John spent a whole episode seeking your input here:
People who’ve known John for many years will see similarities between this Mustang Owner’s Podcast “Roundup” trial episode and John’s popular cable access TV Show, which moved to YouTube years ago as CarsInContextTV - YouTube (Go ahead and check it out for yourself!). He figured, what worked then may still work now! But we’ll let you be the judge. So get set for a new podcast experience by watching til the end: Mustang News Roundup:John: Why the Mustang Lineup No Longer Features a Shelby Mike: ‘GTD Competition’ Obliterates Corvette ZR1X’s Record at ‘The Ring’

You’re not gonna believe the story about how Ryan Girardot snagged his 2024 S650 Mustang GT on the same day he was supposed to be picking up a new Escape for his wife. (Yes, she’s still with him. Blame it on Mustang love that dates back to 1984.)

Mike: Watching the podcast with Chuck Cantwell Shelby GT350 Legend Chuck Cantwell Shares Inside Stories You Gotta Hear! brings a call for a GT350 reunion to bring together both the people and the cars that made this nameplate so iconic. We hope you enjoyed this new Roundup Episode format – leave us a comment if you want to see more of these – maybe once a month? – or what else we’ll need to do to make the podcast more fun and interesting to you.
