You're going to need a lot of them. Absolutely, it's going to take you a while. But at

want one. It's so good this morning on a cold morning. It's a little bit chilly out there today.
We've kind of, I think somebody's turned back the thermometer. Yes, I'm thinking.

pulled three questions from all the questions that arrived by noon in my mailbox on Fridays.
And I take those three questions and break them out into a session so that you really get a bird's
eye view of the question, not just a bum fluff answer, but actually a proper answer breaking it
out. It's kind of like this. How many of you did math exams? Now my hands up. I sucked that math
until I got some proper help and thank you to Boss Man. That's what we used to call him, the
librarian. He's probably long gone to his glory, but he was there for the students and he knew I
was struggling and he mentored me and the problem wasn't me. It was the teaching technique of the
teacher that I was in his math class and that turned into a big conundrum. But anyway, Boss Man
took me in. He was also the librarian and I began to appreciate math. But when you get into a math
exam, you can't just read the question and then just write the answer. What is it you're going to be
marked on? Well, you're going to be marked on how did you arrive at that answer? So if you just put
the answer, you might get a half a point or a quarter of a point score for that. Maybe depends
on the teacher marking the exam, but for the most part, they want to see, here's the question,
how did you figure it out to get to that answer? And that's how you get full marks.
That's how our YouTube channel works. And same with the podcast here. I don't have time to get
into everything. I don't want to keep you too long. That's why I do a one hour Q&A on Saturdays,
is we can spend more time. I can read the question and then break it out for you
so that you get a very thorough answer and a better understanding on how to
own and operate, be a vehicle owner. And remember, mileage does not matter, folks.
It does not matter. What matters most is maintenance. If you're not willing to do the maintenance,
it doesn't matter how old that vehicle is because once you own it and you're outside of warranty,
it's your baby. That's when we call it vehicle ownership. It's all you. It's what you do with
it from there forward is all up to you, all the wear and tear items. That's what happens. It's a
piece of machinery. We're talking about that already this week. You need to view your automobile
as a tool, as a tool to help you to accomplish the tasks set before you throughout the week,
throughout the day, throughout the month. So your mission, whether you're willing to accept it
or not, somebody in the household has to take the bull by the horns and make sure that the vehicles
are getting maintained to the rent most. Otherwise, you better be out there surfing the hours and
banking some cash to pay for the replacements. And I don't know about you, but just saying those words
is exhausting. So this morning, what are we going to talk about? Well, I knew you'd ask.
And my title is, is it time? Is that the time? That's how you get out at any conversation you
don't want to be in. Okay, so you can take that and run with it. Just go. Oh, is that the time?

today with partly cloudy conditions expected around 10 a.m. so we're going to lose it at 10 and
today's temperature range will be from 57 degrees Fahrenheit to 71 and it's going to feel a whole
lot more like 55 to 66. Clickety-click 66. Today's top out will be 71 degrees yesterday we managed to
hit a balmy 73 actually sat outside for a few hours on the the back porch the old part of the
just part of the oasis where you can just hang out chill have a cuppa and read a book or just
take in the birds the birds are very busy this these last several weeks since they got back
r-a-i-n we've have a little bit of that on the radar in the Niagara region .35 of an inch of
that wet stuff and that'll take care of today and we'll see what tomorrow brings so I would suggest
take the umbrella grab the Nelly and put it in the car all right let's uh

medical assistance so you you need to get that taken care of mortgages life insurance critical

wouldn't be here on the air and have a youtube channel if it wasn't for the both of them to really

to take a look at where you're at where you want to get to and draft a plan to get you there so

so this morning is it time one of the biggest questions in 32 years on the microphone with
car connection that's me making that noise so not to worry it wasn't thunder or lightning or
whatever is it time and what we're what it's referring to is you're asking me i've got an
older vehicle it seems to need something all the time is it time to move it out and consider
looking at something else well i've got five things that you need to ponder to be able to come to
that final decision so we're breaking i'm breaking it down for you into five bite size pieces
so that you can really take a good look at whether or not is it time to move that vehicle out
and find something else well economically right now is not a good time i would i would i'm i'm
just repeating what i've learned from my brothers from other mothers tony mealy and larry teacher
our cfps is the best vehicle in the driveway when we have a economy turned down and it depends on
who you're listening to right now but i'll tell you what the talking heads are really trying to do a
great job a great snow job on all of us but the fact is yes we are in a recession by all the rules
and regulations of financing we are there and they got us here so now we have to protect ourselves
the best way we can and that is to well they're discovering it when it gets tight people hang
on to their bucks uh spending slows right down to a snail's pace and it's happening in the in the
auto industry the dealers are screaming sales are pretty much at zero and you know what well
the fellers put us here so now we've got to do our due diligence to make sure we can ride this out
and i've said it before this will be the third round of a recession for me in my age group uh the
last the very first one i experienced was back in the 80s and i was just talking to somebody
yesterday i said you know i had a mortgage at that time at like almost 18 percent and a car loan
at 17.93 percent and i said and people look at you and they go yeah no way way yes
and i still have documentation to prove it on my little truck that i bought at that time at age
22 i had a habit and i did it but i'll tell you it was blood sweat and tears to pay that thing off
in five years and at the end of the day uh $11,200 would have been the purchase price if i could have
paid it off in one payment over five years it cost me $22,000 with interest and principal
together combined and you got to maintain it so i'll share that vehicle with you uh very very
shortly we'll bring it out it's all it's all 100 drivable and it's the last thing the it's the only
thing i only vehicle i saved from my past everything else i sold so talking about that this morning is
is it time to get rid of it well at the end of it i'm going to tell you what i think but it's
you're looking to pitch it off to another caregiver i put my hand up and go do you mind if i take it
and i'll rescue it and that's what you see we'll see on our youtube channel how many rescues we've
done in the last uh year or two and i'm driving one of them it was gonna go up for
pieces parts and uh you can watch all the videos on that and i'll tell you what it's a lovely little
suv and it runs on farts and a jar man the thing's phenomenal on fuel economy and i'm just loving
all over it you know it still needs a little more tlc and uh we'll get there but for the most part all
the mechanicals are done but it was scheduled to it was sent to me to check it over and tally it up
and see what it was going to take to fix it against what a shop had had stated and uh it was bad it
needed a lot of stuff but you know it was a sweet little ride and uh was in good shape inside and
outside structure wise but its mechanicals were failing miserably so at the end of the day
it was gifted to us and i saved it and we decided skippy and i let's video the whole step of the
way bringing this thing back to full working order and what did it cost it
cost about 1200 bucks in parts how many payments could you make on another vehicle off the lot
for 1200 bucks my neighbor just had to sell his truck because of the sign of the times
$2,200 car uh truck payment every month $2,200 so $1,200 in parts and labor was on my back
and we shot the videos and brought that thing right back to life everything and everything
is working it was a break disaster but we got through it and all the other little things that
have been let go and the vehicle had been sitting about um just a little over a year just a tad
over a year it had been said parked so yes you can bring it back to life so that's a nice little ride
yeah 2008 first year of the nissan rogue it's all wheel drive yes it has a nasty ugly pattern
failure transmission if you don't take care of it yeah so let's jump into this i'm using that as
a segue to get you to start thinking it's $1,200 worth of parts in the labor so if the labor were
on that you'd probably be close to four grand 4000 bucks all in done safety alignment
everything it just needs it's ready now for a dose of um corrosion free we're going to get
the marmalade on there and get that settling in through the summer and get into the bones the
dry bones of the vehicle so what are you going to buy there's another question before i give you
the top five here what are you going to buy under 5000 dollars that's ready to rock and roll
and all you got to do is continue the maintenance i watch a young chap he's in uh down in the virginia
area uh his his youtube channel is car questions and i stumbled upon him a couple of about two
three years back and he's open and honest but he has a car lot he specializes in vehicles under
five grand that's in the us we don't have that here not to my knowledge and if we do i would
certainly not be stepping up to the plate to buy one yeah because years ago we uh we went undercover
with an officer and we went into downtown toronto checking and videoing um corner car lots
and we actually left a a vehicle right in the middle of a very busy intersection downtown toronto
the front axle blew out of it puked all its transmission oil all over the ground cars done
we got out said see you to the sales guy right along with us and he lied right right from the
shop we saw the vehicle in the shop and i saw all the hacking they'd done on it and asked them
questions and they denied every single thing and then the car was banging and clanging like a
banging gong and clanging symbol and i said what do you think's wrong with that oh it's nothing
the next thing bang and the car stopped right in the middle of the intersection on a right hand
turn we got out and we left them there and transmission oil everywhere so is it time
at what point this is the question that i have answered for many of of you out there
over the last 32 years at what time do we call it that's the question i would be asked
and i would say well why do you say that well constant issues it always needs something i'm
not feeling comfortable and confident that it's reliable i said well how you've been doing so far
getting back and forth to work oh yeah but it always seems to need something oh okay
so number three how did it get this bad my question to you how did it get this bad
have you been maintaining it have you been following some kind of a maintenance plan
or is it just kind of you know when you know what poo poo hits the fan then the car goes into the
shop and all day long your white knuckle then staring at your phone how much is this going to
cost what's this going to cost us i don't know how we're going to pay for this what if it needs
thousands of dollars of work you know our credit cards are maxed our line of credit is gone how
are we going to pay for this am i getting pretty close let me know send me an email let me let me
know if i'm close on the the head conversation and you're you're you're really dreading the phone
call the text the email to let you know how bad it is but how did it get there that's always my
question and the question backing off of that one would be well when was the last time you actually
spent some money on this ride and i usually if the husband and wife are there they're eyeballing
back and forth the eyes are rotating to one another waiting for the other one to come up with the
answer to my question so when was the last time you actually really spent some money on this ride
well you know it's been a while that's usually what i would hear oh it's been a while can you define
the term while for me is that a month six months pick one i said i'll rattle them out you pick one
a month six months nine months twelve months eighteen months 24 months well probably
a little more than 24 months so i said so you've been driving this car one car in the family sharing
it for 20 over 24 months and neither one of you has spent a single dime on this machine
you have been truly blessed to make it this far and now you've got a pony up so all that
so-called free driving now it's time to pay the piper is it's a car's fault absolutely not the car
has proven itself it is definitely reliable so for 24 months plus you haven't been left on the
side of the road it hasn't broken down but now it needs it's demanding maintenance to go any further
so is it a good car or a bad car well i guess it's not too bad that's usually what i'd hear oh it's
not too bad i go it's a fantastic car it got you 24 months with only gas oil and that's it you've
done nothing spent nothing on it for almost two years plus okay number four negligence
and lack of maintenance that's what always puts it there 44 years as an automotive service tech
and still going i can tell you that is the honest to goodness trend out there with y'all
some are really really good others see how far they can push it before the vehicle needs
a lot of work to bring it back up just like that 08 Nissan Rogue it wasn't the car's fault
it was parked for over a year little things decay it's not that doesn't suddenly
become maintenance free because it's parked and i want that's another conversation for another day
for all of you who put it in the garage and keep it safe and hermetically sealed uh uh that thing
is not maintenance free it's a disaster waiting to happen so we'll cover that another day so
brings me to point number five because i can't keep you all day yeah it's not the shopping channel

constant issues how did it get to this to this point and how did it get this bad
negligence and lack of maintenance and number five brings you to either spend the money to bring it
back up to a rescue situation and rescue that vehicle that's bought and paid for and move on
or move on into something else but here's the thing if you're weak in the area of vehicle
maintenance already on this particular vehicle that you're about ready to throw the towel in
what will change on the next one what will change on the next one
number four was negligence and lack of maintenance you know you're either going to have to follow a
plan that you have or actually grab on to our car connection maintenance schedule system
and do your due diligence and follow the maintenance and you won't find yourself in this
position again because this is where people would bail out on vehicles and i'd say can i buy it off
yet if you're serious would you mind if i i purchased that i said i'll i'll refurbish it and see if we
can get it back out there oh you're gonna refurbish it i said well good they'd always here's what i
would say well i guess you like pain and suffering good luck with that and i would get to it on the
evenings i would restore these things and bring them back and parents would be like hey motormouth
if you get another one of those those gems we can you put us on the list they didn't hang around long
once it was finished and i posted it on the bulletin board in the waiting area i now have a
vehicle ready for a son or daughter or second vehicle in the household here's how much you
don't use the around 1500 bucks under two grand and that covered the cost of the parts and i took
it all apart pulled the seats out clean it inside wash it wax it detail it and do all the mechanicals
and it's ready to go down the road and then the customer that owned it comes in and sees it and
goes is that i go yep no way i go way it's going i said it's gone it's going to a son or a daughter
in a family one of my clients and i'm confident it's going to be just fine and dandy wow who knew
so i'm just sharing with you what i experienced for 44 years over and
again so i leave you with this my friends if you're weak in the area of vehicle maintenance
on this one the one that you presently have what will change on the next one
because you'll find yourself doing the same rodeo the same lap around the mountain like
the Israelites did for 40 some odd years that should have only taken them about 14 days
