mileage to cover in a short period of time hope you had a fantastic fabulous
weekend yeah it's known here along the south shores of Lake Erie we got some
coming in right now for just for a Monday morning tune up so take it easy out
there safe travels for all of you if you're driving to work try and keep at
least one eye open at same time and you know Mondays are are built for coffee
that's what I say Mondays are coffee days for us here in the workshop get our
eyes open get your brain back in tune and get down to business and that's what
we're gonna do we've got a really interesting topic today for you but
before I go there I just want to remind her in February yes we will be holding
our 30-day fuel savings challenge and it's a two-part so it's 30 days we take
a small break and then 30 days and watch how much money comes back to your
wallet you could see savings in your household based on two cars well over
$1,200 for the year is that exciting it should be unless your boss is tapping
you on the shoulder and going hey you're I've noticed you're a team player we're
gonna give you a $2,000 raise this year not likely it might be lucky if you get
a $10 Timmy's card or a gift card of some kind yeah anyhow we have to create
our own excitement and that's what we do in the car connection workshop Monday
mornings we shoot the new videos as well so our day starts at 4 a.m. most of the
week our day starts here in the workshop my day nobody else it's just you and me
kidney 4 a.m. to get everything done that needs to get done and on time so
Monday mornings say a little prayer for us 7 a.m. we're shooting videos so yes
I'm pre-recording this so that you can have it while we're shooting videos so
there now you know all right now you know cats out of the bag so we put three
new videos up every single week and today I'm really pumped about the segments
that we are filming when Skippy gets here at 7 we'll have a hot cup of Joe
together and we already have our outline we're filming some pieces today that man
we never thought we'd ever get there on this project and today is the day where
we get to light it up and I think that is so so cool to be able to share that

thinking this morning as I was sampling my morning beverage I remember the one
time someone asked me would you wax my car for me and I said okay this is quite
a few years ago I thought well just go down to the store with the little red
triangle you'll you'll see where I'm going with this in a moment I get there
and I'm not often in that store but I don't buy any car parts or anything there
I have my resources I've used for years and I didn't have wax in the shop I'm
going I don't have any wax and my favorite wax at the time it still is
today turtle wax but you know this was new paint it was first time I'd ever
really paid attention to base coat clear coat paint and you got to treat it
differently so I go down there I think you know I'll just be like 15 minutes
pull something off the shelf and I'm looking I said to the lady I said hey
lady hey nice lady which aisle is all the car detailing stuff particularly wax
you know polish and abrasives that stuff oh that would be aisle 12 and she goes
it's a pretty big rack that goes all the way across the store so I get the aisle
12 and I'm looking floor to ceiling I'm going this is no car wax oh my gosh I
should have brought my jammies and my toothbrush and a cot yeah it's too many
choices so that's why with our car connection website instead of sending

premium gas worth it we are a comment you know go to our YouTube channel and

is it worth it is it really what do you know about gasoline and I said the
YouTube channel because I wanted you to know fuel is not clean and I don't care
who says what what brand what flavor of the month it's not clean go to our
YouTube channel you'll have to go way back into the probably the first 50
videos to find the video I did on fuel filters and I actually show you what
comes out of a fuel filter in our fuel filters today they're not just filters
they actually purify the fuel there's a series of screens inside the filtrate
that filters out debris or as one of my friends says debris we humor people you
know we really do debris seriously anyways to point zero zero zero one
microns how teeny weenie is that that is teeny weenie point zero zero zero zero
zero one micron so it's filtering out even silt so if you go to that video sign

video what the part is where it is how it works how it breaks and how you could
have learned some basic fundamentals of vehicle ownership that could have saved
you money unnecessarily spent money on breakages and put that money back in
your wallet how cool is that and how many times would you like to learn stuff
like that about your vehicle I don't care what age group what size dimension you
are you can learn the basic fundamentals which will put money back in your wallet
once you have a an idea of the way things work so that's what we teach our
videos are fun and loving and teaching teaching you the basics and you'll be
surprised at how much you can learn that will help you to prevent yourself from
being ripped off out there because it is a jungle almost every month that goes by
I have never not received an email can you check this and see if I got ripped
yeah so the better we do at learning things the better it's gonna be so fuel
is not clean that's why I really push hard to change the fuel filter now if
you're like one particular vehicle we have that the fuel filters in the tank I
can tell you it wasn't even two months after we purchased it privately the 07
Toyota FJ cruiser the fuel pump gave out and I'm just saying his little deja vu
on that one I was heading up to London to my natural path and left Stony Creek
Hamilton Sun is shining got pulled off for fuel and truck driver says to me
which way ahead and son I go we're going west fella yeah he says you're gonna
want to you're gonna want to be careful because there's a you know 50-card
pylips on 401 West yeah the Wild West we called it I used to live up there the
Wild West and I'm looking at the blue sky and the sun shining and I'm going okay
all right he was right and anyways long story short slicing drifts off over the
hood of the FJ coming up and hitting the windshield that's what we were talking
about zero visibility I followed a truck we had to get off the 401 and I knew the
back roads to London because that's the way I traveled when I lived up a new
Dundee if I was heading up to London I'd go the back roads and so headed over to
the back roads got behind a truck I could just barely see his tail lights on
the trailer but anyways made it all the way up there all the way back to back
into the driveway in the next morning the 07 FJ Cruiser would not start
crank crank crank crank crank no fire in the hole fuel pump quit can you believe
that backed in and what I found was the positive terminal had blown right up
something went awry and that told me that the pump itself got overheated so
you got to remember this folks I'm gonna give you a tip right here E does not
stand for enough yeah fuel pumps in the tank it's submerged in its own little
bath yep and when you run it low the pump is exposed to air inside the tank
and the windings run warm and you burn the pump out prematurely so when I say
keep the fuel tank at least half I'm helping you save your fuel pump which
round trip if the tank's got to come completely out which most of them do
they you know they put the pump in the tank the tank in the vehicle and then
they build the vehicle around it yeah so you can't get to it easily and a lot of
stuff has to come off it's a big job on a lot of cars but I fixed that on the FJ
I created a hatch so I can just unbolt it lifted the lid up I even put hinges on
it and also sealing compound so when it closes and it's just the right size to
get to the top of the fuel tank unthread this great big dial and pull the
fuel pump and sneak it right out through that hole so that's what I did I
wasn't pulling the tank out I looked where it was I took some measurements I
measured three times I cut a hole in the floor very nicely and made an access
panel yeah why wouldn't the manufacturer do that it's an IDK I don't know so what
killed my fuel pump the fuel filter which manufacturer says last here's the
lifetime thing last the lifetime of the vehicle it only had the vehicle two
months and it took a whack of money out of my pocket two months you my friend
said I think you bought a lemon I go no hang in there you know this is just one
of those stumbling blocks the intake fuel filter was plugged solid so it
overheated the fuel pump because the fuel pump doesn't know that the fuel
filters restricted it just keeps pumping fuel trying to ram it through the
filter so kind of like if you were kids did you ever your brother or sister your
horse and around put a pillow over your face just for fun see if you pass out
yeah you can't breathe very well through the pill you're probably gonna sub
Kate blackout at some point well that's what the fuel pump did it didn't know it
had a pillow over its face and it overheated the positive terminal and it
just it came off it disintegrated so that was the end of that the pump was
cooked so yeah that was another expense so keeping your fuel tank half full is
gonna save you a big chunk a change out of your wallet but if you're the type
of person that believes E stands for enough you're gonna be that person
that's gonna be paying for that fuel pump long before myself just another tip
that will put a ton of money back in your pocket you don't need to fry your
in tank fuel pump okay so I'm gonna say it laziness is costing you money when it
comes to car repairs and and putting things off all the time instead of
staying ahead of the curve staying ahead of the curve on maintenance on your
vehicle you can keep these suckers as long as you want yeah gonna be part of
the 400,000 kilometer club on the 2007 FJ I don't think we'll make it to 400 on
the 99 Honda Civic the rocket as I I kept it off the road this winter because
I like that little car a lot and there's a couple of areas that need some
cosmetic surgery that I don't want to get any worse and that's at 319 yeah and
still as strong as an ox and the air conditioning blows cold enough that
penguins come out of the doubt these are the things you can accomplish when you
know what to do with your vehicle so you're saying get to the point I am are
you getting some of the points the fuel pump needs to be immersed in fuel the
fuel filter needs to be replaced on a on a regular basis a plugged fuel filter is
taking away a ton of fuel economy from the performance of your vehicle and you
don't even notice it that's the thing it robs you very very slowly once it
becomes fully restricted yeah you're probably gonna blow out the fuel pump
then you're gonna have to have the fuel filter replaced and there's gonna be a
pack of labor if it's not an easy one to get out so if your vehicle and this is
what you need to check if it doesn't have that tag inside the fuel fill door
that says premium fuel required that's not just a suggestion that's exactly what
the engineers are trying to tell you that it needs the high test you go well I
don't think it's worth it well hang on babies we're gonna get to that nugget in
just a moment regular fuel has less BTU's brittle British thermal units and I'm
not going to say that too many times because it is a tongue twister regular
fuel is the bottom of the barrel it's the lowest BTU at pumps so what does that
mean well if it's not producing enough oomph for the engine and your manufacturer
I'm gonna talk about that first is if the manufacturer is recommending premium
fuel that's what you need to be running in that engine based on what the how the
engineers have designed the engine and I say this to people go buy a lesser piece
of junk that you can shove almost kerosene in it to run it but vehicles
that are higher end and require premium fuel have a higher tech engine under the
hood that's why and this is I'm not the message I'm the messenger an engine
designer told me this he goes motor mouth we put have that sticker put in there to
warn the consumer this vehicle requires the high test the highest BTU fuel
possible because the engine is designed for that octane level octane being BTU's
being kaboom in the cylinder we want a huge kaboom inside our engines that's
what the engineer told me now if you own and operate European cars you would know
this automatically they take high test fuel period put your regular fuel in
there and you're killing it so a lot of you probably are with like your VW's
your Audi's you buy you buy you have to say this I have to say this champagne
taste on a beer budget right so you think well I'm I'm living the dream now
I'm driving an Audi or I'm driving a Volkswagen or a sob whatever it is well
you got to step up to the plate what does that mean you can't take your
European car to Joe Schmoll who just fixes you know Chevy Chrysler Ford
domestics you need a European car tech and you need to put the parts back on it
that came off it from the factory there's no dicing and slicing and universal
this and that for European cars it's not going to happen and the fuels the same
it needs to run on premium fuel period it's that's what it's designed for you're
buying a much higher tech performing vehicle if that's not if you're not
wanting to do that then those aren't the vehicles you should be looking at you
should be looking at the domestics that you control almost you know use
Lamar gas and it should run fairly decent for a while yeah so why do they do
that so the engine burns clean if you're using the regular fuel you're
schmutzing up the engine inside you're killing it you're absolutely slow death
killing that high tech high performance motor that's in that vehicle requiring
premium so I have Volkswagen we have a couple of Beatles we bring out to car
shows and and fundraising events for the kids to have their picture taken in
their convertibles those both have really expensive motors in there is
they're European it's high-test not a drop of regular fuel why the engine
requires butane to burn hot and make a big kaboom in the cylinders and you
know what that gives you more mileage mm-hmm so the mentality has to change
regular fuel if I run my FJ cruiser on regular fuel I won't even get 19 miles
to gallon I know that for sure and it will run like dog poopy on the bottom of
my shoe yeah which smells really bad you know when you got the heater on the
winter on the floor and you go what is that smells like cheese balls oh man I
stepped in some dog boots on the bottom my snow boot yeah you know the ones with
the big grooves on now you gotta get out of there anyways won't wreck your
breakfast coffee but that happens yeah so regular fuel is like I believe 87 I
didn't pull the numbers off the pump I just know I view regular fuel as the
dregs yeah it's gasoline that's all like a tire it's round and black some people
like them like that just round and black doesn't have any tread on it but it's
round and black it's holding air my brother was like that he liked them with
the wires hanging out too yeah so at the shop I would save him so I go you like
those you can have them yeah the regular fuel low octane small kaboom it's more
like a pop and it's dirty it's the dregs that's what I call it the dregs so you
get up to premium now you got the big kaboom the engine takes less fuel on the
premium than the regular so I was using my own 07 fj cruiser as an example if I
run a tank of regular in there it will cost me almost 50% more it'll I'll lose
that that much fuel economy it costs me 50% more in that tank of fuel compared
to the premium it runs on premium that's what it wants and that's what the
sticker says that's what the book in the glove box says premium and you say well
you know that's that's expensive boulder off you know that premium stuff that's
expensive yeah yeah it can be but what you're getting on the back end I can go
further much further on a tank of premium then in the 07 fj or if I decide to put
that in one of our Volkswagen's we bring out for the summer it's gonna run bad in
the fuel economy is lousy absolutely lousy on the premium you can see a huge
difference my pops drives Alexis and he said you know I'm not buying fuel at
Costco anymore I said oh why he goes well this this was a conversation several
months ago I didn't notice because I you know I I have a Costco card and one of
the things I got the card for was to buy fuel there and get the savings well now
the pump says on premium may contain up to 10% ethanol well ethanol's lousy and
we'll do a program on that I have all the stats on it to prove it that ethanol's
lousy it has very low BTUs it will take you a tank and a half of ethanol laced
fuel to go the same distance a tank of even regular gas without ethanol will
take you it's proven I have the article from the engineers I have it and I may
even scan it and post it is it's proven that ethanol is not a fuel alternative
by any means it's made from anything that rots basically if it's organic and it
rots it you can make ethanol moonshine that's what it is so there you know the
corn farmers are happy and I have farmer friends and they sell their corn for
ethanol use but ethanol it has a lot of problems it's acidic it's
hydroscopic so it attracts moisture and it burns like trash it burns like a wet
baseball glove not that I would know but anyways I was mad okay that was that
time in my life but anyways yeah so now the premium fuel at Costco has up may
contain up to 10% ethanol well how can it be premium now you change the chemical
composition of the premium fuel so ethanol is a BTU buster that's right
it's a buster BTU buster it may burn clean but it won't give you horsepower it
won't it's weak and frail so now you add ethanol up to 10% into premium you
don't have premium anymore what is it and my answer is IDK I don't know but I
don't touch it there anymore I just so you know I don't use my take advantage of
my Costco stuff and get fuel there so I go back to you know where I know I've
been buying fuel for decades now and I know the blend because I used to know
the blender one of the blenders that work for one of the major oil companies
and that's where they blended the fuel and send it to that's where I go so and I
get it there all the time and you know what my vehicles run sharp all the time
I run premium even in our 99 Honda Civic it doesn't like the regular doesn't run
properly it doesn't perform well it loves the premium why is that because the
octane is higher but you got to look at the pumps now because some of them are
now saying up to 10% ethanol right at the premium sticker so when you're hitting
the paddle for premium they have to put that notification right there at the
premium button so check for that but your premium gives you the good stuff not
the tainted stuff will give you a lot more fuel mileage a clean running engine
so the hotter the burn the cleaner the engine inside what does that mean well
everybody's all gaga about carbon don't get me started on that because I'll need
a valium to bring me down it's not that's just not true ask a farmer what
happens here's a here I'll give you something to Google what happens to the
earth when we get to zero carbon particles just Google that you know we
are carbon right that plants trees foliage bees all require carbon to
survive and live you knew that right grade five photosynthesis yeah just
check that out when you got a moment might want to look at that but ask a
farmer if they know about carbon particles they'll tell you because they
need it's something they need to know especially if you're growing crop all
right so if we have ethanol based fuel we know right you know now that you're
losing 50% yeah that whole thing was to help the corn farmers have a happy
life it's it never was an alternative fuel because it can't be an alternative
fuel you end up buying more ethanol based fuel to go what would normally take
you one tank and you can measure that out too you can do the tests that I do and
that is run run your tank here's where you run it down to the e fill it up with
regular and do this in the summer don't do it in the winter winter is not a time
for fuel economy everybody's fuel economy takes a dive just the way it is
because the engines working hard to stay hot at 195 Fahrenheit so it's dumping
fuel in there to get that engine burning to get the temperature up it's just a
whole cycle so wintertime fuel economy drops off and help it so if in the
summer try this out one full tank of just regular log your mileage then the
next tank do the same thing drop it down fairly low if you really want to be you
know tiptoeing to the gas bar let the we light come on I know with one of mine
the book says a hundred K once the we light comes on but I don't push it that
far ever although one time I did I'll share that story it was pretty touch
and go actually yeah we're in the middle of nowhere and the we light came on
anyhow I don't want to digress so then you're gonna do another tank of fuel full
premium zero ethanol in it so you're getting the full octane log your mileage
watch what happens I don't need you know you can test that you can fact check it
yourself you'll be surprised you go wow I got this percentage more exactly it's
money in your pocket you're not destroying the engine building it up with
too much carbon and whatever else that black stuff is that comes out you have
to watch that YouTube video to see me take apart a fuel filter and show you
what goes on inside that fuel yeah where where does that black stuff come
from really hmm anyhow that's why premium fuel is worth it it absolutely is worth
it I do you know what I don't I don't even think about it and I know I'm not
you know Rothschild or Rockefeller or anybody of those statues but I understand
engines and I understand fuel and I understand horsepower and I understand
BT use and I understand ethanol's place on the planet and it shouldn't be in cars
it shouldn't be in small engines it's it's really absolutely it's it's toxic
it's toxic to your vehicles engine 100% if you have to get ethanol based fuel
that's when I I make sure I've got ethanol buster in my vehicles so that
just pour in a few ounces and it neutralizes the acids of the ethanol
because you can make ethanol from anything that is organic that rot you
could make ethanol based fuel from a 2x4 you can fact check me on that yes
you can rotting wood it's organic it will make mash which is ethanol there
you go that's what they're making ethanol is mash which is moonshine yeah but
it's acidic and it eats things like the inside inside liners of these plastic
fuel tanks it etches the plastic we have intake manifolds where the fuel
injectors are housed in they're made of composite plastic and it was Corolla
that had serious problem with that the ethanol based fuel was causing fuel
leaks because it was eating the plastic are you getting this yeah so the regular
fuel that's the drags that bungs up the engines takes away fuel economy and
performance and kills your engine nice and slowly yeah a high test that's where
it's happening if it's if it's 93 or 97 if I can get higher than 93 premium or
high test I just take it because I know I will get my fuel economy to pay for
that what I'm gonna gain in fuel economy performance and longevity on my engine
and fuel system is gonna come back to me ten fold and that's what you have to
understand you have to understand that you want your vehicle to run better
perform better get you maximum fuel economy there are things that you have
to know like I when I just talked about that are the real deal not a sales
pitch I don't make sense on the leader but you know what I want to get to the
600,000 kilometer club that's how I'm getting there I'm gonna make sure I look
after the rust proofing so the body and the structure stays solid and the rest
we can replace it and keep going yeah everything else is replaceable
structure goes it's junkyard city and this past summer Skippy and I shot videos
we went into St. Catharines where you pull it wrecking yard to get some stuff
we had a shopping list and we were shocked and awed at the quality of the
vehicles that should not have been in there the wrecking yard already not and
we were looking at we spy this one grand Dodge Grand Caravan was black it was
loaded it was clean as a whip inside and outside there wasn't a rust barnacle
anywhere I said to skip you I go we could haul that out of here on our little
cart we'd take that put that together at the car connection workshop we'd have
one heck of a van to give away at the end of the day she goes wouldn't it though
I go yeah she goes well why is it here I said something major went and you know
the transmission was apart so somebody had been in there carving out components
and harvesting and you know it's sad there were a lot of vehicles in there
they weren't rotted out you know you couldn't climb in from the outside with
the doors closed as she goes all these vehicles look so good though I go that's
the thing they're not smashed they're just died abuse lack of maintenance I
said L of M puts them here lack of maintenance they die and nobody wants to
put the money in because they don't understand that it would be cheaper to
fix that major component divide that by 12 months how much would that be per
month could you buy a car a newer car with the it's going to be more insurance
and for your premium you know your premium is going to go up because the
newer it is the more pre more they charge you so everything changes I said
and then you're paying a monthly payment and interest on top of that so if that
component was five grand or six grand divide that by 12 that would be your
monthly payment could you buy a car for that price and I'll tell you right now
the answer is no not even close not even close I don't care how old it is keep
it going farmers don't care how old the tractors are they know how much they're
worth some of them take better care of their machinery like my friend Charlie
his stuff looks like the day it came out of the showroom because he understands
the value he understands the value of putting effort and he who waxes a
combine really and vacuums them out the tractors all of all the equipment a
person that understands value understands the dollar understands the longer I can
keep this machinery working and working top drawer it's money in the bank that's
the formula running the high test is putting money in the bank if you're
loading the engine up with with carbons it's going in the oil the oils
contaminating the major components inside the engine and carbon is carbon and
heat are the two main factors to killing any kind of mechanical component
engine transmission power steering all of it when the oil breaks down the
components not protected from the lubricant so we're gonna leave it there
I'm gonna pull over in part but when spring gets here it's not too far away
once we hit February remember February short right yeah whoo I'm pushing for
spring I'm ready this is getting old already dressing up like the Michelin
