I think that would help going into a new rule set.

So I would be tempted to say,

Isaac, let's not interrupt his development.

Let's give him one more season

in this seat

to really

get used to the new rule set

to really continue to make sure

his confidence is sky high before promotions.

Almost do that extra little bit.

That's what I'd be tempted to do.

But I don't think they will do that.

I think they will

promote Isaac

because he has been as good as he has

and that's not necessarily a bad decision

because he's Sean.

What's been really interesting is the way

he developed and not to give

the generic stock answer of

of course I just want to go in.

He has sort of said,

well, yeah, I've seen what's happened to other people.

It might be tricky

and that's really interesting.

The thing I think that would work in his favour is

it is a new generation of car.

So it might not,

it's a completely new car.

It's not an evolution of the previous ones

we've seen in recent years.

So it might be

this current beast

that's so difficult to tame

that's been evolving over time.

So that might work in his favour.

I suspect he'll end up in that C.

I'd be tempted to go for consistency

if I was Red Bull though and that's nothing against Isaac.

So I used to be very much in the camp

of do not touch Isaac.

Keep him where he is.

Don't put him in that Red Bull second seat.

It is cursed.

But I do think 2026,

new season,

totally right,

I think just probably give him a go.

Like he's clearly very, very talented.

That's the time to make a change.

Not making, you know,

three changes during one season.

That's probably the right place to make a change.

And actually, I'd love to see him

racing alongside Max Verstappen,

racing against Max Verstappen,

working with Max, learning off Max.

Imagine how good he could be.

I agree with everything you're saying,

everything you're saying.

I'd be able to pick up podiums

and race wins where Max can't.

Like Checo could do for a time.

There was a time when Checo was in that seat

and he was picking up podiums

and race wins where Max couldn't.

I tell you what,

I've just given my opinion on it.

My opinion could be total rubbish

because the person

ultimately making that decision,

Laurent Mackie's,

is arguably and probably

the best person in the world

at all because he's been

the team principal at RB

and worked with him there.

He's now moved across to Red Bull

and he's working with Yuki there,

having previously worked with Yuki at RB.

You've now got a team principal

who probably more so than Christian Horner,

completely understands

the differences between the two teams,

the new rules, the challenges.

So what I suppose what I'm saying is

I actually trust whatever decision Laurent makes.

I can sit here

and give my opinion, which I've just done,

that is still my opinion.

But he's in a better position.

How funny that, being a team principal

and wanting no more than me.

But you see what I mean.

He's in a really unique position for a team principal

to have worked with both drivers

across both camps, across both teams.

So I think that's a really

unique thing and actually I think

whatever decision's made

I think Laurent's in a really good position

to make it.

I was saying that that actually might work

in Hajer's favor

because going to

the Red Bull team with a team principal

that he's worked with a lot knows really well.

He knows Isaac well.

That might just make the whole settling

in process a lot different to what we've seen.

Maybe next season this Red Bull team

isn't going to be like

what we've experienced over the last however many years.

Yeah, I mean

I could have this completely wrong

but it feels

from when I've been in the paddock and from the outside looking in

that Red Bull have sort of evolved in their position

of will we go racing with just Max if we could?

I think something Christian Horner almost said at one point.

no, we need to get this

second car situation

sorted. It feels like since

the change in team principal

it's taken a step forward

in priority

shall we say for Red Bull

and that's why

go again. That's why I just trust

want to make this decision. It also feels like

they've made some progress this season

since the new team principals coming

of making the car more drivable.

So it does feel like

it does feel like the change in team principal

for that whole setup has helped

and

that's why I trust them. So yeah anyway

lovely to speak to

we're really grateful to Racing Bulls

for allowing them to come on. Hopefully we'll get them back on

and we can have a bit more of a free flowing chat

when we're in the same room

or we're not replying, overlying on internet

because trust me

from bitter personal experience

being a Formula 1 racer does not guarantee good internet

that's just one of those things in it.

Let's move on then and talk about

the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. 8 races left

Christian, we're near the end. This is crunch time.

This is when it gets interesting

including Azerbaijan, 8 races left

and it's one of the most beautiful races

in my opinion. I absolutely love watching it

because it's like watching a historical artifact.

Do you know what I mean?

Ha, ha, ha. Lovely.

It's nice seeing the cars go through the castle

or get past the castle

I think I threw it, that would be fun.

Yeah, although it hasn't really thrown up

classic racing in recent seasons

it's not, you get

what we know is DRS trains

because there's a big long straight

there's not a massive difference

in the way the tyres wear

from car to car to team to team

and for that reason overtakings become quite difficult

so what we mean by DRS trains

for those newer to Formula 1

is one car's got

some free air at the front

a load of them each behind

have all got DRS

and they're getting DRS on each other

but the one at the front hasn't quite got enough

advantage from the DRS to overtake

all the ones behind have all got equal DRS

so you end up in just a bit of a train

and we get that a lot at Baku

that said in previous years

we've had absolute chaos

it's a bit Monaco-like in that it's a street circuit

and the walls are closed so there's been safety cars

it sort of has felt like to me

in recent years that we're going to have a good

car and some drivers need to make mistakes

so it is possible to overtake

down into turn 1 in particular

there are overtaking opportunities

but we might not get a classic

equally we might have chaos

and an absolute classic so let's find out shall we

well I've just gone on the old weather app

it says it's going to be raining

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

and then Monday onwards

it's like 25 degrees pure sunshine

so it looks like

we had a wet Baku

I can't remember a wet Azerbaijan Grand Prix

I'm not googling this

although chance of precipitation

I don't

but I almost picked me up in the comments

because I've probably forgotten one

I can't remember ever seeing

a wet Azerbaijan Grand Prix

that could be interesting

yeah maybe I'm wrong

so much to the chat Christian

has obviously been about McLaren's Oscar Piastri

and Lando Norris fighting at the top

31 points separate those two now

but

before we talk about those two

can we please talk about the fact that McLaren

could win the championship

the constructors championship this weekend

it could happen

and I don't think a lot of people are banging on about that

because everyone's distracted by their two drivers

fighting it out everyone's distracted by their two drivers

so it's a really good opportunity to say

they're going to win the constructors championship

it doesn't matter what happens this weekend it'll happen at some point

and they're going to win the constructors championship

because they've been by far the best team

this season

they've done by far the best job

so

I'm very pleased to see that

we'll do a bit more of that when they do

actually win

we're going to heap some praise on them and it's deserved

but we'll do it when they actually win

which is inevitable

if they do do it this weekend though

there's no reason that it's been won

which is incredible

just shows how dominant they've been this season

and also that they've done it with two cars

because the 2023 red bull was definitely in Max's hands

a more dominant car

but they didn't win it this early

so because that was the point where

Checa was struggling a little bit more

the fact that they've got two drivers up there consistently

the fact that they are giving them equal opportunity

to go for the championship

it's all very impressive

and there was all the debate last time out about

whether they were right to switch the drivers

and the way they did

well listen, I said it at the time, I still say it

it's the way they've gone racing

that might come back to hurt them in the future

it might be an interesting thing

if

you know

more is at stake

it's a very interesting way to go racing

at the moment

it is working

all is harmonious

31 points is the gap that separates

were you confident that Lando

could still catch Oscar

are you still banging that drum?

I am

because 31 points

with 25 points for a win

and 8 races of a Formula 1 world championship left

yes, absolutely

because it only takes

a mechanical failure from Oscar

which Lando had

it only takes somebody

clipping Oscars from

somebody's front wing clipping Oscars

left into the first corner

and Oscar getting a puncture

it only takes a spin

it only takes a bad qualifying one

any of these things

it feels unlikely to me

if you look across

the races this season

it feels unlikely to me

that we're going to have 8 races

where Lando is just better

than Oscar and can claw

the gap back that way

100%

it seems to be

the best driver pace wise

on more than half

the occasions between them

so if we're going on sheer

Oscar has just been phenomenal

sensational

so if we're going to go on sheer

if it just comes down to racing

clean pace

racing it's Oscars

it's going to be Oscars

but Formula 1 is about so much more than that

so yes it could still

be a grandstand title finish

it's less likely than it was

but for the reasons I've just said

we do sometimes get accused on this podcast

just because we're British of being

overly pro Lando

which is mad considering this podcast's history

and the fact that we've championed

and celebrated Oscar Piasco

since day one of this podcast

Oscar was my pick at the start of the season

I'm conditioned him to win the whole thing guys

I can't praise Oscar enough

he's been sensational

there's a reason he's ahead in the championship

and was even before Lando's penalty

it feels to me like

Oscar has the edge

across the season

and that's what it's looked like

Can we just quickly before we start wrapping this up

and we do predictions

talk about Mercedes

and Toto Wolf

and what he said about Kimi Antonelli

because it's fair to say throughout the whole season

Toto Wolf has been so supportive

and positive about Kimi Antonelli

and now

that slightly slipped a little bit

didn't it?

I think this is the first time that I will ever come on

any formula one thing

and sort of question Toto Wolf a little bit

I just think he's amazing

but I was really surprised to see him

use the word underwhelming

so often

to talk about Kimi

there is clearly a frustration at mistakes

Kimi's making and is

at the moment inability to have a clean weekend

so Toto's thing of Kimi just needs a clean weekend

is true

we've seen at the start

the season Kimi's results were super

consistent he was up there

it was great and then he's dropped off

he's definitely lost a bit of confidence

which is why

given he's lost a bit of confidence I was really surprised

to see Toto say the word underwhelming

a few times

I just thought that was a weird thing to say

I'm now distracted because

McGinn the dog has positioned himself

right at the centre of the frame

if you're watching on YouTube you'll see

if you're not I'm just trying to do F1 analysis

with a dog just like staring at me

and it's like hi yeah

so yes I was surprised at that

from Toto

but there will be a lot of eyes

on Kimi Antonelli this weekend

Toto's right he does need a clean weekend

for me don't worry about being as close to George

just get through the weekend mistake free

but it's a tricky one because as I said earlier

walls are close in backer

drivers make mistakes so

a big test for Kimi this weekend

don't put it in the wall have a clean weekend

and build back from there

I feel sorry for Kimi it must be horrible

to hear comments like that from

your team principal I know

you've got to be honest

but that's hard

I didn't think that needed to be said in the media

I was really surprised it's not a Toto

style normally I was just surprised at that

really was

maybe Kimi will be one of those people

who goes alright well I'm going to prove you wrong then

yeah perhaps that was the thinking

perhaps it was a bit of let's try a different approach
