He'd pull like the childish childishness out of everybody.

And then everyone would get very pranky.

So there has been nothing going on in the motorhome lot.

So it's a little bit of a different vibe.

sometimes you put it one day and the next...

Since we came to the open test, we kind of like...

Pretty much the same as last year,

believe it or not, the setup,

because the last year for me was good.

But wow, it feels a little more...

I know Firestone did...

They say they didn't change anything,

just some composite chemicals that they did.

But it is much better.

It's much more consistent,

which probably helped a lot of the cars,

but mine, in particular, spot on.

Felix was particularly quick.

I only asked, you know, you're a driver,

you're also a team owner,

so you kind of cover all the bases there.

Unbelievably fast.

Where did that pace come from?

Well, I have some particular areas

that I see it, and the team understand that, too.

But all the things that we did

was particular up to Friday,

what we did was super equal.

And one of those scenarios that you pick up,

try this, and boom, you know,

and you're like, wow.

So now we got a replica of that,

but it's not that simple.

But that's what happened.

The good news is, I feel that I know,

but we just got to emphasize a little more.

And we have one car of our cars

right there with a huge chance

to be in the contention to win this race.

There'll be potentially more

than just one of your cars up there, right?

Oh, no question.

No question.

Myself and Marcos, we're working together

a little closer.

But I do believe this,

well, depending on the weather,

obviously, and depending on the wind as well.

But I do feel that we will be closer racing.

I think in the back of the pack

might be a lot of distances.

You're going to see some passing

with the situation, the hybrid,

same as last year.

It will be some cars in the back

going to come to the front.

I know a few of them.

And I practice with them as well.

So I feel that they are strong as well.

So in the end, it stops.

Always will be a very key point

to dictate how it's going to end up this race.

When you're the extra program,

when you're the May only program on a team,

that pit stops is kind of the one area

that can be a concern.

What kind of steps did MSR take

to make sure that the 06 guys and girls

are absolutely where they need to be?

Yeah, we had pretty much the same people

than last year, which is good.

One few addition on the right rear,

which is pretty strong.

Also, sorry, I'll take that back,

the right front as well,

which used to be from Rio.

So I feel, I don't know,

but I feel that guys are really in sync right now.

Tomorrow we're going to have another opportunity.

Hopefully the weather helps to just emphasize that.

I don't know, but I feel that where we are right now,

yeah, we can surprise a lot of people.

I think all of practice week,

you know, we got a bit caught out on Sunday.

But a little bit disappointed with qualifying for sure.

But at the end of the day, you know,

we're in the race and we get to race this Sunday,

whatever, or Monday or Tuesday,

depending on what mother of nature has for us.

Don't do it.

So, but it's a good point.

You must feel good about being disappointed with P30 after last year.

Yeah, for sure.

Yeah, definitely a little bittersweet on qualifying day.

You know, I had, you know, how it is as a race car driver,

like I get out and I was, I was disappointed with our run

because we made a couple of mistakes that we shouldn't have.

But at the same time, everyone's saying to me,

oh my gosh, you know, you're in the Indy 500.

How does it feel?

I'm like, man, it feels great.

But right now it kind of stings, to be honest,

because I want to be a lot higher up the grid.

But yeah, you know, after I've had time

to kind of comprehend everything and yeah,

just be here this week.

You know, I didn't get to milk a cow last year.

I didn't get to, you know, do all this media stuff.

So yeah, I've been enjoying it.

It's been a really special experience for sure,

especially after coming so close last year and all that.

You know, I've been a fan of this race my whole life really.

You know, my first one, I think, was the 98th running, I think,

running in 2014.

Okay.

Yeah, and then I've been to pretty much every single race since.

So yeah, and then to come so close as a driver last year

when I thought I was going to do it.

And even like the week leading up, I wasn't too nervous,

but everything kind of unraveled a little bit

on qualifying weekends.

But yeah, we're here now and I'm really excited for it.

So last year you did all the on track stuff

up to and through qualifying, right?

Which is like a majority of the work of the month of May.

This week is, you know, Monday session, you get carb day.

Carb day is kind of fun in its own right.

You have, like you say, the rookie lunch, your milk and cows,

you got the parade coming up.

But because you did the bulk of the work last year,

did you still feel like a rookie when you got here this May?

Yes and no.

You know, I did feel like I had a lot more experience

and it was definitely helpful at the start of the week.

Being able to kind of slot myself right into traffic,

relatively knowing what it's going to feel like

as much as you can.

And yeah, I think that helped a ton.

Just getting up to speed quicker, kind of closing that gap.

You start the week feeling comfortable running five cars back

and then you just kind of creep it up as much as you can

and then you're starting to pass cars and all of that.

So that process was definitely accelerated this year.

Qualifying, I got way more runs than I would have liked to last year.

So I got a good amount of experience doing that.

So that helped once we started to get into everything there.

But yeah, you know, still a rookie this week.

Still not, you know, taking anything for granted for sure.

I can't imagine how it's going to feel being the 30th car

to go into turn one here on lap one.

I've heard it's not easy.

We'll talk about why.

I got some tips for you.

I've been there.

But yeah, I'm just excited to get everything underway.

You know, hopefully have a clean race and just try and learn as much as I can.

You know, we've got a new team to all of this right now

and we've got a lot of things to iron out and we have.

But yeah, just excited to get going and see what happens.

I want to come back to the team in a sec.

But you know, you've got kind of three big days left,

carb day, Saturday, Sunday.

Is there anything you know that's coming up aside from the race itself

that you're kind of most excited about most looking forward to experiencing?

I think just experiencing race day morning as a driver is going to be insane.

You know, even last year after I'd gotten bumped out of the show,

I was still here and I still loved it.

And it was still just as special to me as it has been, you know,

every single time, you know, the taps, the back home again in Indiana, the anthem,

all of that stuff is just so special and it gives you chills every single time.

I can't imagine it being on a whole different level, you know, when you're in a race car

and walking across the stage through driver intros and all of that.

I think that's something that's going to be super emotional for me.

And I'm really looking forward to taking in and that's definitely what I'm most excited for.

The team, as you mentioned, is quite literally able motorsports.

This is largely the IndieNext program.

I think, you know, I was talking to Max Narron, I think he was saying you had to bring in like

one guy to put over the wall for fuel or something like that.

But otherwise, it's your guys crew.

I mean, just talk to me about the kind of pride you guys must feel for taking that group and

throwing them all together and putting an IndieCar program together.

Yeah, it's cool.

I mean, just to see the passion that a lot of those guys have had for it is so cool.

I mean, you're taking a four car IndieNext team, which isn't a light endeavor at all.

You know, it's IndieNext is super serious these days.

And you've got engineers for every car, you know, mechanics and all of that.

You know, it's basically just many IndieCar teams for each car.

And so to see all those people gather around this one car and put all of their energy into it

has been really, really cool.

And then, you know, we've got a bunch of guys who haven't been over the wall before.

And it's so cool to see how passionate they are about that.

You know, they've been going back to the shop as much as they can to do pit stop practice

and they're competing against each other and all of that.

And that's been the coolest thing.

You know, John Brunner, our team manager, kind of leading into this, didn't really assign

that many roles, which sounds weird.

But he basically just allowed whoever was going to step up to step up.

And that's been really cool to see, you know, who's passionate about it.

Who's, you know, taking charge, taking initiative.

And yeah, it's all obviously surrounding the Indianapolis 500, which is obviously the

greatest race in the world.

And just to see everyone's passion surrounding it and all of that has been amazing.

And I think, you know, it honestly speaks a lot to our IndieNext team and the talent level

that we have there and all of the people.

So yeah, that's been something that's made it a lot more special for sure is just to

see everyone kind of gathering around it and, you know, people that have been there

my whole entire career and that I've known forever to see them kind of make this step

with me has been really cool.

And it's a cool point.

I never really thought about it like this, but you do have this four car team, those crews,

their teammates, and they're working together.

But they're always, you know, at the end of the day, once the green fly drops,

you're rooting for your car.

It must be cool for them to all get to kind of work together in a completely different

capacity all on the same car, cheering for the same driver, you know, affected by the

same results in a way.

Yeah, for sure.

I think we are one of the more, you know, collaborative junior open wheel teams out

there.

You know, we do all work together.

You know, there's not a whole lot of egos sort of in our engineering office or anything

like that, which is cool.

But yeah, to see them all, you know, working together surrounding this one project is

awesome, you know, especially after I spent a year sort of outside of the team, you know,

I didn't see, you know, they made a huge step in growth last year, but I was pretty busy

racing IndyCar myself, so I wasn't able to be there.

So, you know, this year, I've taken more of a role in the IndyNext team and trying to

help them out and helping out where I can and all of that.

So I've already spent so much time with everyone this year on the IndyNext side of things.

And then, yeah, to get back into the car is super special and have them all surround me

is really cool for sure.

All right, we're gonna, well, actually, let me let me ask you this.

You've, you've, you've done, you've done IndyCar.

You've been around second crack at the 500 now, but you know, coming into it, we knew

everyone, you know, we knew you were in, you made it on speed anyway.

So there's nothing like all good there.

Has there been any driver in the paddock?

Because you are a single car team this year, you're doing it solo, which is tough.

It's tough from an engineering standpoint, tough from a driver standpoint.

Has there been anybody in the paddock that has sort of been throwing a little bit of

helpful advice or putting their arm around you a little bit to try to, you know, help out and

as you grow through this experience?

Yeah, I'd say, you know, Renus definitely has.

My teammate from last year, you know, we went through a bunch of lows, highs last

year, not a bunch of highs, to be honest, a bunch of lows, lows last year together,

you know, most notably here at bump day, you know, when we were both fighting for the last

spot and we were like three miles an hour slower than the next car up the road.

So yeah, we've, we became really close last year and he was super helpful throughout,

you know, the whole month of May last year for sure, a guy with his pedigree around here,

especially in qualifying and then, you know, to be able to, to basically be battling against

him for the last spot, it was helpful to know that it was him and someone who is really talented

because a lot of doubts started to creep in for sure when you go out there.

But yeah, I'd say, I'd say Renus has been the most helpful for sure.

Yeah, I'd say, I'd say Renus is man.

So given that mentality and that approach, obviously qualifying this year was a little

And conditions were tough.

Format was completely different because of the rain out on Saturday.

So when you guys on the seven car are locked into, all right, we're going out for our first

and our one and only guaranteed attempt.

As number two.

A lot of different conditions to what you guys have run on.

Tracks been rained out, all these things.

We know that we only have one shot to get into the fast 12.

If we think we're in that ballpark, how big a risk do you take trying to do that?

Or is your philosophy no point to do anything crazy?

Let's just kind of get solidly in, do a comfortable run.

Is that kind of roughly where you guys thought you'd be based on your approach?

Or were you going for it?

No, we were going for it.

I mean, we were, you know, in a scale, we were probably like 5% conservative, but 95%

aggressive.

You know, we were on the aggressive side.

We weren't thinking, hey, we're going to stack a bunch of downfalls on and then,

you know, just make sure you're flat, which potentially actually would have been a better

idea just from how much everybody struggled.

Right.

But we were also between half a tenth to 0.8 of a tenth of a mile an hour slower than we

expected to be, just on pure car pace, which was a little odd.

We were the same downfalls between me and Paddo.

When Paddo was obviously, it was faster.

I did have a misshift, which cost us some pace, but it would never transfer us anyway.

So we, we did scratch our heads a little bit afterwards, you know, also seeing the opportunities

that raised from some of the other cars that were just simply struggling, right?

I mean, you see Renus's big lap and ends up with a 228 or a 229, you know, and it's,

the conditions were extremely tough, but I would also say we were just surprised how slow we were.

But it is such a stressful day.

Like I was sat in the engineering office watching Rossi's run and I was shaking.

And I'm like, why am I nervous for this guy out there?

I mean, I couldn't care less, right?

But it's just that qualifying day mentality, right?

Where it's everything's on the line.

But I would say fast Friday should be more stressful.

Why?

Because it's the first time you feel the car, right?

And it's the first time you really get into quality boost.

Yeah.

And okay, let's say you did some quality runs on 130 boost and you, you're like,

okay, I'm happy with a car.

You have a sort of reference of what the car is going to feel like.

What is never going to feel the same?

No, I mean, you're going 10, 15, 20 miles an hour faster.

But you can build up to it on fast Friday.

You can do multiple runs where like on qualifying, one and done.

But a lot can go wrong on fast Friday too.

and thinking about that stuff that I probably didn't

And I probably was like not thinking that every other driver

is driving with the same thing.

You know, I just thought I was the only one in the moment.

It was just one of those things and I'll never be as aggressive.
