Hello and welcome to the Fast and the Curious Gold.
This is a celebration of some of our favorite moments over the past three seasons.
I am Betty Glover.
This is Christian Hughgill.
Gold!
Gold!
Always believe in your soul.
In your soul!
You've got the power to know.
You're indestructible.
Always believing, we are gold, first and carrier's gold.
Today, Christian, we're talking.
Don't worry, we're not going to do that for every episode.
Don't worry, that was a special for the first.
I think on episode seven, it would start to get old.
Yeah, I might wear a little thin that.
I'll tell you who is gold, Lando Norris.
He's had a very good season, hasn't he?
It was all right, wasn't it? Could have been worse.
Yeah, sort of won the world championship, didn't he?
It was all right, wasn't it?
But it went quite well for him.
But we are going to be showing you all of our favourite bits of Lando Norris
from the past three seasons, and there are so many good bits, isn't there, Christian?
Yeah, I can still remember the first time.
We don't know what's in this, so hopefully this will be in.
But I can still remember the first time I interviewed Lando for this podcast,
which was at the start of the 20-23 season, our first season.
We've done 23, 24, 25, so this is the start of the first season.
And I said, what's the aim for Ewan McLaren this season?
And he said, to get ourselves where we can fight for podiums next season.
Like, that's how bad they started.
That's mad, isn't it?
Yeah, a little did he know that season, he'd have,
in 2024, the season he's talking about, the next season,
he'd have a car that was capable of winning the world championship
and he'd win races, missed out on the championship.
And then in 2025, won the world championship by two points.
Two.
Just two points.
But we've had so many good moments with him, haven't we?
I called him a liar at the start of the 20-25 season.
He did!
But I'm not just talking about Lando.
This is what I love about doing this podcast with you,
and it's the best thing ever that you don't get intimidated by these people.
These Formula One drivers, you will say anything.
The Betty Glover filter that I sort of fell in love with when we became friends
or the lack thereof filter, it just applies with anyone.
So we're sat in front of one of the world's great sports stars
and Betty would just go, no, I don't think you're telling the truth.
He's like, you calling me a liar?
Sorry, but he was.
He was lying.
I thought she was.
He was lying.
I was like, have you ever thought about winning the world championship?
No, I never thought about it.
And Betty's just nonchalantly like, no, I think you're lying here.
It's iconic.
It's absolutely brilliant.
But I say this on podcasts, and I don't just say it's always good to speak to Lando,
but I do always really enjoy talking to him.
I don't know what you think.
He's just always, he is always fun to talk to.
He's different to, we've all spoke to these sports people
that are just fundamentally quite dull.
And I think there's lots about Lando Norris that makes him,
he's just a really fascinating character
that's just not dull in any way, shape or form.
No, he's a really nice guy.
He understands the media side of things.
Like when you are a professional sports person,
you've got to do media as part of your job.
And he gets that.
But also I think when you do so much media,
it probably is so boring if you just keep it straight
and say the same thing every time.
Lando doesn't do that.
He will rock up to an interview.
I think we were talking to him once about like,
was it Adele or there was some sort of like music reference?
I don't think we talked about F1 for about the first 15, 20 minutes.
Yeah.
It was about, because he'd spent new year, I believe with it.
I think it was a DJ.
I don't think it was Adele.
I mean, I could be wrong.
I can't remember.
So he's great fun to talk to.
But I also think, I don't know what you think,
on track last season, 2025,
I think he surprised a lot of people
because I think so few,
when Oscar was dominating mid-season
and towards the start of the season,
we were still seeing Lando beating himself up.
I don't think there was a lot of people
that thought he was going to be able to turn it around.
And he did.
And on the debrief podcast of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix,
I remember saying to Greg,
like he won it for me through his consistency.
He was so rarely off the podium
that even when he wasn't quite as on it as Oscar was
in the middle of the season,
he was still banging in really good results.
Yeah, exactly.
And then he rallied to have those weekends
where he did just win and look so good.
I think his ceiling was higher
than a lot of people thought he was this season.
One of the things that people always said
when they were talking about Lando was,
I don't think he's got the mentality for it.
That was, everybody was saying that.
That was so, so common.
And I think he sort of proved this season
that you don't need to have that sort of
like Max Verstappen mentality
where you're just so ridiculously ruthless.
You can sort of show your human side as well.
And he did that this season.
The turning point for me genuinely,
I believe, was Canada.
It was still fairly early on in the season.
He's in this battle.
He makes this howler in the heat of combat.
There wasn't that many times this season
that Oscar and Lando went wheel-to-wheel racing.
Wando. Wando noise.
There wasn't that many times when they went
wheel-to-wheel racing.
And when they did in Canada,
like Lando messed it up.
It was Lando's mistake.
He made contact.
And I just thought,
oh, God, he is just going to be,
like he's going to be furious with himself.
Yeah.
And he got out of the car.
I was like, huh, it happens.
I made a mistake.
I can't be too hard on myself.
I made a mistake.
There we are.
And I was just like,
and he apologized to Oscar
and he apologized to the team.
Of course he did.
But he just moved on.
And that to me was like,
oh, you've unlocked what's needed here.
This ability to not go in hard on yourself
just to be cool and move on to the next one.
And then, Betty,
you previously said that the people
who actually was handed it,
it's not possible in a 24 race season.
It's 24 races.
It's such a long season.
When I was first watching F1,
it was 17 races.
You can't just be handed a title
across 24 races.
So he thoroughly deserved it.
And we've loved chatting to him.
Betty, shall we watch, listen,
and enjoy some of our favorite
Fast and Curious moments
with Mr. Lando and Aris?
Let's do it.
It's weird.
It's weird thinking like where I was
just a few years ago, where I am now.
I guess for the first time in my career
being the older guy,
the older teammate,
I've not had that since I've entered racing.
So it's my first year of this.
So a bit more responsibility on my shoulders
to help the team,
to lead them to use my experience
of Formula One,
to use my experience of working with this team
for the past five, six years.
But yeah, just all stuff I love.
It's all exciting and different things,
but all stuff helping us move
in the right direction, I hope.
In my old job,
when new people came in to do the job
more much younger than me,
it made me feel old.
Has Oscar coming in now made you feel
are you like who's this child
and you're making me feel old?
No, because he's a little bit taller than me.
I'll tell you.
I probably shouldn't have admitted that.
I'm way taller than Oscar.
Yes, of course.
We'll edit that.
No, he hasn't.
He hasn't.
He hasn't.
I don't know how much younger he is
a year and a bit or something.
So I think that's like an acceptable amount.
If it was like he came in,
I was 19 and I'm like down 23.
There's like four years is a lot,
but I think he's like 21 or something or 22.
No, no, no.
I've not thought of it yet.
Maybe we're time,
but no, Safari is just my teammate.
As you came into the room,
we were talking about breakfast and coffee.
Yes.
I'm not a food person, are you?
Because coffee, I've spotted,
has become an increasing topic of conversation
amongst Formula One drivers
or a Valtteri Bottas, big coffee person.
You were talking about a Cortado earlier.
Are you a coffee man?
No.
Oh really?
No.
Not at all?
No, Latino coffee.
Is that a conscious choice?
I just don't like it.
If I really have to have it
because they have an early start
or something, I'll do it,
but I don't like it.
I don't feel like it affects me either.
I think it's too like mental.
It's probably not.
I mean, it is scientifically proven to help,
but I don't feel like it helps me at all, really.
You're not fulfilling the stereotype
of the British Formula One drivers.
When I was in Bahrain last year,
so many of the British press were moaning
they couldn't get a good cup of tea.
Yes, not for you.
Not what tea does, sir.
That's good.
It doesn't even taste good.
What are you hoping for this year?
What's the end?
By the end of the year,
what would we have liked to have happened?
I would love, love, love to be in a position
where I can be confident
that in 24 we can fight for podiums.
So stepping stone to biggest success in 24 is the plan?
Yes, I think, you know, this season
we have the new wind tunnel coming.
We have the new simulator coming,
which I actually saw last night for the first time.
It's beautiful, beautiful.
So that should get up and running fairly soon.
It's still a bit of work to do,
but these two things are, you know,
things which have been in the works for quite some time,
but they're also things which we need
to be able to fight against the top few teams.
And also some final steps
to really get the rest of the team in a perfect position.
So I think if we can complete those things this season,
stuff like the wind tunnel should be done
halfway through the year.
So we should get our first look at next year's car
in both our old wind tunnel and new one.
So we can, you know,
already start to see what areas
we can further improve with the new wind tunnel.
And yeah, I think the main thing is
being in a place where we're confident
we're taking steps forward.
You know, last year was a slightly tougher year.
We had some problems in the beginning.
We chilled us back and then that made
kind of the rest of the season a little bit tougher
than we wanted to.
But I think we're again in a better place
than we have been for some time.
So we need to prove that.
We need to put that emotion.
Start to take those steps forward
and give ourselves, give everyone the team
the confidence that we're not far away.
Although we have a lot of work to do
and the distance and the gap is still big
that we've got to close, we're not far away.
We just need those last few things to really come together
and once that's done,
yeah, everyone needs to be ready
to get their heads down even more
and fight for it.
You always intend when we speak to you.
I know, this is just from the last couple of days.
If you see my upper arm,
which I won't show,
if you see my upper arm,
what's the drumstick, is it a drumstick?
It looks like a drumstick, right?
Is that what you think?
You know the lollipop?
Like the squashy, the sweets.
You know one that's like raspberry and then
or like the ice cream, what's the ice cream?
The ice cream?
Not like a fab, is it?
It's a fab, pretty sure it's fab.
I don't have sprinkles on me, but
like, you know,
look beautiful here.
What she's done, drumsticks.
Drumsticks, the sweets that are sort of red and white.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I wouldn't say I'm red, I'm just tanned and white.
You're a lovely clown.
Excellent, good. And the golf's going well because
No, it's not.
I hate golf currently.
Right, my friends play golf
and it seems to happen. I snapped my driver the other day.
I just jumped on it because I got so annoyed.
Oh, God.
Yeah, it's in the bin.
I should hope so. Do you play with Alex Halbont?
Every now and then. Obviously he has
Well,
he said on this podcast that he doesn't let
his girlfriend teach him because they argue.
But you'd think he'd have an advantage.
She definitely, like every time I play, you know, she's
giving plenty of
lessons to him. Yeah, her trainer
now gives him lessons. So he really
should have an advantage. So he should
be like pro soon, basically.
He has no excuses is what you're saying.
100%. Okay, I'll remind of that
next time we play. Well, how are you guys when you play?
I would say I've beaten him every time, I think, so far.
See, this is it. I could be wrong.
He might have beaten me once, but that's like once, you know.
But he's getting better.
Like he stopped for a while and I think he's
kind of trying to get back into a little bit.
So, but we play right now and then
in Monaco when we can.
Did you
talk to Vin Diesel about Tarmac?
Because I'm so glad we have, because that was
fascinating, but I feel like he probably
didn't ask that. What about Sequentials?
Sequential Gearbox kind of guy.
And he was very happy when I said
I'm a Sequential Gearbox kind of guy, you know.
But normally when, for us
to go quicker down a straight, we upshift.
Normally in movies,
they downshift. Yes.
You know, fascinating, fascinating.
So you would say... Science is opposite in movies, but...
Giving him his tips for his next car.
You know what, you know when you're doing these races
down like a drag strip, instead of like
suddenly downshifting, I'm like,
if you upshift,
like when you're at the limit to your upshift,
you go quicker.
So you should start winning like every race quite easily from now.
I just love the idea of you going,
I've been watching this car chase. What you ought to be doing here.
I saw you down-changing
down this straight. What are you doing?
What was your thing?
Were you just going through your head at that point, mate?
But yeah, that was the main thing.
So, yeah.
And I want to say again, I'll say
he's massive.
He almost winded me, like he hugged me
You know? Yeah, I'm not a big man either.
He drawed me. Just finally,
when we last spoke to you,
you said Drain for the season was to basically
get in a better position for next season
for podiums.
You bought an upgrade to the car.
Last weekend in Baku seemed to make a positive difference.
How are you feeling about the season now?
Yeah, yeah.
It was a small step in the right direction. That's for sure.
I think we understand it was an upgrade.
100%. It made the car a little bit quicker.
100%.
So, a better baseline
for further changes down the road.
It's a different philosophy,
a different way of understanding
how the flow works under the car.
Which gets very complicated.
So, I'll keep it simple.
But a better understanding
and then more room for improvements
down the line.
So, it's more of a baseline
and hopefully in the coming months
we'll be able to
further improve what we have
previously had, if that makes sense.
This is an advert for eBay.
Oh, guys.
Don't you think car buying has become a pretty dull experience?
I personally cannot think of anything
less exciting.
But on eBay, behind every car and part
is a story waiting to be shared.
Like this guy I read about
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4
on eBay.
It was well loved.
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
on eBay, but this one, it needed a lot of work.
So, after this guy gets
a great deal on his dream car,
he rebuilds it.
The whole thing, with all of these parts
that he found on eBay.
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels,
the absolute works.
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
was out there on the track
as a full blown race car.
You're ready to go, daily driver.
Your next Resto mod.
That means restoration plus modification
if you didn't know.
eBay has thousands of cars
and is the largest online selection
of vehicle parts and accessories.
eBay things people love.
You know what's wild?
Most people are still overpaying
for car insurance.
Just because it's a pain to switch.
That's why there's Jerry.
Jerry's the only app that compares rates

Drivers who save with Jerry

You know what's wild?
Most people are still overpaying
for car insurance just because
drivers who save with Jerry
could save over $1,300 a year.

It's a beautiful day
because my first day back in the car
not this year
but the first day in the new car.
How did you find the new car?
It's a tricky question.
Well let me tell you this.
I find it great
but it's tricky in these conditions
to get a proper read on what it's capable of doing.
I've just been over to Mercedes.
Yeah, tell us.
I told them I wouldn't tell you that.
It looks like a pile of...
Really? So slow.
It's going to be fine. Slow as well.
Trust me. Are you sure?
I've just had a look at your car.
I've seen theirs, you're fine.
Based on Greg's years of technical activity.
I've done an F1 podcast for one year
and he's a technical analysis.
That was good to know.
Good to know.
How was your winter break?
What have you been up to?
I've done many things. It took a while to cover everything.
I travelled a fair bit.
I went to see Daniel
out in Perth.
It was a bit of a spontaneous move.
Not romantic anyway
but I'm just saying
it wasn't planned
all of a sudden.
My car's my only love.
I'm my mom. I'm my sister.
I'm my brother. I'm my dad.
I went down to Perth.
It was cool.
It was very warm. 40 degrees.
It was beautiful.
I went from 40 degrees in Perth
minus 30 degrees in Finland.
I had a 70 degree hit
which was quite a shock for the body.
How'd you pack them?
I had all my warm stuff with me
like jacket and stuff
so I'm in Perth with like
winter jacket on,
beanie on,
and Daniel rocked up tank top
and flip flops.
Did you have to go out and pick some up?
No, I just take them off.
Can I ask a question about what a day
with Daniel Riccardo is like in
Perth?
What's his plans for you on a day trip?
So we woke up.
Always good to start that way.
We attempted
making breakfast.
That was probably the highlight of the day.
We were trying to make poached eggs
or some sort of eggs.
And that didn't go down
very well.
They looked so bad some didn't even want to
eat the eggs because they just looked bad.
But I thought I cooked them very well
and actually they left me to do most of the cooking
because I felt like I was the responsible one there for
in the kitchen.
And
it was delicious actually.
One of my best breakfasts I've ever made
for everyone.
Long one to go for an egg.
What else happened on this trip?
No, that was about it. It was the highlight of the day.
But then there was
a bit of a swim, a bit of gym,
a bit of training by then
and he's got some little
cool things, a little motocross bike
and I probably shouldn't say that
because I don't think I was allowed to do it.
I saw you had helmet
and you had your armpats on and all sorts.
Definitely wasn't just helmet
like nothing else.
It was a lot of fun
so I enjoyed it.
We spoke this time last year
to give a take a couple of weeks
and I remember asking you
what the aim for the season was
and you said that the aim
is to get the car into a good enough place
where we can battle for podiums
in 2024.
You got to Bahrain and the car obviously wasn't
in a great place but then by middle of the season
you're taking the lead into turn one
that is a season of
that's a mad season.
Silverstone
was the turnaround point for us.
We brought the upgrade to Austria with a couple
smaller things for here in Silverstone
but that was the point where
everything turned upside down and until
Austria I think we scored 17 points
or something between two drivers
and then after that was 290
or something like that.
There was a fairly big difference
of podiums, points
and excitement
but Silverstone was really all turned around
and we scored the first podium here
and that was a very special moment for myself
to take the lead at Silverstone
in front of my home crowd
I was imagining
just being on the side cheering
and everyone else would be like
so I imagined that even when I was driving
I had to have a little look at the crowd
I did all I could to take in that moment
but it was
it was a very tough start
we didn't end up
we didn't expect to end up as good as we did
and I think that was a promising sign
because we knew in such a short time
if we could do that much what could we do
through the winter, through 24, through 25 even
so
I'm looking forward to it.
I do love it here, I have loved it
I'm going to continue to love it for many more years
and that's also just why
because I love it and I'm very happy
so there's two things
I want to be a world champion, I want to win races
and that's the priority of it all
but there's also the
I'm still just a normal guy and I do racing
because I love it, not because I have to do it
and at the same time I just want to have fun
and enjoy every minute and if that's
spending it with McLaren over another team
then that's what I choose to do
Are you confident for this season? Are you excited?
I hate this question
I'm always excited
of course I wouldn't be here
if I wasn't excited to go into every new season
so
that's definitely a yes
am I confident it's such an unknown
thing
am I confident we've done a much better job than other years
1000%
that's good
are you more confident in the last two years
like a 10,000%
it's a good percent
but translating that into lap time
translating that into results
and just knowing what everyone else is doing
is always the question mark
so that's the one where I have to go time or tell
it so often strikes me
that there is such a love for you
from your fans you see it online so much
we see it in our DMs on this podcast
for your appearance it's like
my goodness people love Lando Nariss
my niece called me today
and went please say hi to Lando
they go we've done it
say hi to Pia
hello hello
it is incredible
what's that like to have that love from these people
that you've never met to cheer you on in the stands
that must be so special
it is because it's
it's something that's hard to describe in the first place
just the feeling you get of
love and support from people
there's not many ways around the world
like many things you can do in the world
where you get the same feeling
and the same satisfaction
and it's just the fact that
and they come and support me
I still find it just odd
in a way that people coming over
cheer me on and want me to win all of those things
it's an odd thought to have
because it's just I think not normal
for people
so I think of that quite a bit
why is this person even coming to cheer me on
I did think of it but at the same time
I'm very thankful because I know
I have probably one of the best followings
and just fan bases in general
very supportive always
already in the hotel last night
there was quite a few of them
it's always nice
especially when it's kids
because when that story
went out that was once me
and there was an F1 drive
and I was like oh my god this is so awesome
it's that same thought of
I picture that being myself
and thinking like
I'm that person now
and I can give something back to them
and try to inspire them in some way
it's wonderful it's probably one of the most
special things about all of it
I get to travel the world and drive nice cars
and it's glorious
and tough at times but at the same time
that's pretty the most rewarding
special part of it all is
the support
and the love you get from people
so nice
you said don't ask but he's nice
Miami Grand Prix winner
Lando Norris
I'm sure you've heard this so many times Lando
I mean that's got a good ring to it
doesn't it?
I've waited a long time to hear it
it's amazing
it was an amazing weekend
it's been an amazing few days since
incredible one I'll remember
forever
you are in your natural habitat
which is a car with four wheels
on the way to McLaren HQ
you must be the world's busiest man
this week has it been
just completely crazy?
like Monday, Tuesday, off
actually I was playing golf with Zach
so I had a nice that was my reward
those were my few days off
and then Wednesday I flew back and then
I was in McLaren yesterday already preparing
for Imola and preparing for Monaco
because we got them back to back
so as much as we're kind of still
talking about Miami
we're already preparing for the next few
who won in golf?
Zach won the first one, I won the second one
oh okay that's alright
to keep us happy
it's no secret that you've been waiting
ages for this win
your 110th attempt
15 podiums in Formula 1
your dad said that he's worked out
he's been to like 900 races along the way
I'm sure you basically
imagined that moment of winning a Grand Prix
over and over again so many times
was it everything you thought it would be?
to be honest it's hard to imagine
what it would be like
as much as I've thought of winning it
and what would happen in all of that
honestly I don't know
I didn't want to put any expectations
to it and then I've just seen what happens
and the effect it had on
the whole team
everyone within McLaren, friends, family
whoever it was
I've obviously dreamt of winning
many many times
but the actual repercussions of it
what actually happens after
it's hard to imagine because
it's something that's so unique
so yeah it was an amazing
amazing Sunday after the race
amazing Sunday night
and so now I'm smiling I'm happy because
all the hard work paid off
let's talk about Sunday night then
because we saw Zach telling you
that the fly ups cancelled
Lewis Hamilton apparently told you to push back
the travel plans
so that was sort of the last we saw of you
fill in the gaps what happened
what did you do?
I just spent some time with my friends
I had a good night out I had a nice dinner
I went to spend some time with the team
we went back to the hilltown everyone was having a few drinks
and celebrating so it was nice
just to see all of the team there
a bit more relaxed celebrating
because I've been with the team what
six years so for the majority
of them we've been on this little
journey together we've had some ups we've had some downs
and to celebrate it
with them because they've been just as much a part
of it as I have made it even more
special so I went to say hello
to them and we had a couple drinks together
and we had a good time
and then the real party began
I feel like you can't
you can't tell us too much but what time
did you go to sleep Lando?
I didn't
that's good love that
you deserve that you only win the first race once
so I made the most of it
good that's what we like and something else
that your dad has said because he has been doing the rounds
is that the next step
is world champion now
that has got a mad ring to it what do you reckon?
I mean this is
let me win a couple more first
yeah do you know what
we'll let you enjoy this before getting into it
he's right like that's
there's two things when you get to formula one you want to do
first one is just to win a race
second one is to win a championship
so that's my goal it's my dream
that is our
our big target but there's a lot of
steps along the way to achieve that
and one of them will be winning
a good amount more races so
no I think like my feet are on the ground
I'm focused still I'm ready for the next few weekends
to try and replicate it
try and have some more good weekends
and go for next

Lando, welcome back to the Fast and the Curious
thanks for having me, good to see you guys
it's very very nice to see you
you were just about to launch in
to a story involving
Craig David and I stopped you
because I wanted to hear it on the microphone
where did you bump into Craig?
I got him off the plane
I did my new year in Dubai
and he was going there as well
so first time
I know he performed here, didn't he?
he did, yeah
I think it was pouring with rain when he was doing it
I just bumped into him, yeah
and he was a
a really really nice guy
he is nice, is he a former one fan?
a little bit, I mean he's into it
I don't think he's been
he's not been to many races
I'm sure he said he would love to come to another race
but he's busy as well
you know what, he's a very
kind man, very generous man
he was, I mean he was taking
way more attention than I did on the plane
I like hoodie and everything
so I was hiding
he was taking pictures of everyone
I was like what a guy
did he know who you are?
well I didn't say hi I'm Lando
I kind of just said
I walked past him, I'm like a speedy walker
I'm impatient
I want to get stuck behind people
so I was kind of like going past him a bit
and
they weren't kind of just walking at the same pace
then I felt awkward to not say anything
so I was just like
see you here for a new year are you?
other than seeing Craig David
what was the winter like for you?
that was it, I peeked
that was the highlight we know
I wintered with Craig David
we were in sunbathing
no that was it, I just had a nice time with my friends
I
I did my little Finland trip
my yearly Finland trip
which is my getaway from people
you know over the years I've learned more and more
I don't like people
no I sympathise with that
very few
you're sounding like a 60 year old man
I feel it sometimes
I've taken the other day and I'm still broken
so I feel 60 years old
all I am
my algorithm clearly knows what I want
better than I know myself
I just see videos of you shopping the whole time
shopping?
I don't know why but there's always people
that's probably where I get
papped, photo the most
is shopping, but you know what the weird one is
is when they're filming me but they don't answer the photo
and then I see it
I'm like, that guy was filming me
he said that thing when I was near him
thank god he didn't hear that
you guys
you've been around Formula 1 a little while now
but I don't think you've ever gone into a season like this before
thinking, I might have a chance here
I haven't
you don't even think that, you know that
I know that, but listen
Karl was great at the end of that season
you must have thought about it thinking
could be the year
could be the year
this is Oscar backing up behind us, just to excuse that
normal
it is
we've not started the season yet so let's not get ahead of ourselves
but we've not started the season
well ever
I think what felt like the best start ever
was my first year in Formula 1 because
no matter where I finished felt great
but every year there's almost been
more and more expectation for us to
then do a better job and then do a better job
and we've just never been able to do it until really the last
couple of years, you know we took some steps forward
and last year was the year so
this is the first one, we're coming in like we've done it now
now there is the
pressure and there's the expectation of
you've done it, now you have to start it
that's our target but it's
difficult, everyone's trying to improve and make as many
changes and everything as possible
but I think we are confident that we've
figured out a lot of stuff and
we definitely want to start
how we end it
how do you handle that level of pressure
because this is the most pressurized
you've probably been maybe
I would say it is
and I think I know it
because
I mean I just did the media session
and they're like oh the bookies have you are the best stars
and stuff like that, which is great
and I hope people make a load of money off of me
as long as they give me a car
but
there is the pressure and the nerves that come with that
and everyone's going to feel it, that's the thing
you know, I will feel it
but all my mechanics, all the team
expect, that's normal
that's how humans work, as soon as there's expectation
and nerves
you slowly learn to work with it
and that's the normality of Formula One
that every year you know there's pressure and nerves
and all those things
and I think last year was a great year because
now I'm on pole quite a bit
how do I deal with those things
now I'm leading the race, how do I deal with those things
and I kind of experienced a little bit of everything last year
apart from leading the championship
that's something I've still not ever done
but I race against Max and I came out on top sometimes
he came out behind sometimes
and those types of things
so I learned a lot last year and I think last year set me up very nicely
to come into this year and actually be very calm
I know there's a lot more pressure on me
everyone's like now he's got to do it
but I'm very relaxed and calm
and I feel the most relaxed I've ever done
but in a good way
but in a ready way
have you thought a lot
about winning the drivers championship
no
really
I think you're lying
no I'm really not
you must have
I don't think you're lying
no I'm not even
you started recording
you're now calling me a liar
that's true
we're cutting that out
really though
I'm quite surprised
I haven't, I haven't even thought of it yet
it's good
we let us think about it
we're excited for you
we just look forward to more wins
I'll never forget that
but when you say it I think of it
but I'm not going around every day like
let's stop talking about it
I'm just thinking of
lunch
hey the moussaka
fantastic
you liked it
I had one
and two of the sandwiches
and you're only a loud one
so I think it's two guys in there with no food
we're being wrapped up because I'm talking about moussaka
that's how it goes
we've got one more killer question
here it comes
you know you were talking about the wins earlier
there were some weekends last year like Zambor
like Abu Dhabi where you looked so in control
and it was like
this is someone that looks
properly ready to fight for a world championship
because you were right up there
that scrutiny level I thought looking from the outside went up last year
and there were some weekends
where you were scrutinised more
and people were harsh on you in some ways
for weekends where it went wrong as search
or it didn't quite go as well as you'd like it to
how difficult
was that to deal with at the time that jump
in pressure of scrutiny and have you
reflected on that much over the winter
yeah um I mean rightly
so like um
I'm all up for people having their own opinions
and saying you know what happens
if you did this should you have done that
um yeah
I think the only thing that
that I don't respect like I respect
all those things you know and a lot of this people's
jobs to kind of comment to these things and so forth
the only thing you don't respect is like
people who think they know better when they most
likely don't um because they want
in that situation they're not living that moment
um and uh
and just false stuff
stuff that's just like how the hell has someone
come up with something there's a lot of conspiracy theories in this
there's a lot but people don't call it conspiracy
theories now they just call it their facts
yeah and I don't know how you could
it might as my personal facts um
that's not how it works you know that's not the
fact so it's um
you know again you learn how to deal with these things
and that's something I probably was affected by a lot
more before I think last year I was
and I've been more and more just
you just gotta live with it and roll with it
you know the fact that people are
criticizing you or supporting you
um of course you always are much happier
about those supporters um
but I know I'm gonna get criticized I criticize
myself all the time I I want
my team to criticize me
and the thing I probably almost hate
the most in the world is people who
try to make me feel good
and and
do it in the wrong way you know I prefer
the criticism than like a fake
happiness let's say um
and
that's just yeah again my way of doing
things I feel like everyone's just so stuck
with you have to do this everyone does
this this is the way you have to do it
when none none of it's true it's just um
finding your own way of of living your
own way of thinking your own way of talking all of these
things there is never really a correct
way and a wrong way of doing a lot of things
um but people think too much of the
time that there is so
you know just find your own way of doing it and I feel
like that's what I I kind of clicked last year
halfway through three quarters of the way through
with um okay now I just
crack on with doing my own thing and focus on myself
and and that seemed to work so that's how I'll
I'll go into this year but um
I know I'm
gonna make mistakes and I know I'm gonna
not have perfect race and those types of things
the same as any athlete or whatever
but um
uh yeah
I don't mind what people say to be honest because
I'm the first to criticize myself I'm also the
first to be honest and say
yeah your f***ing job today
I missed yourself or I did that wrong
I mean I'll happily admit it you know
um maybe not happily but I'll always
admit it and I'll always be honest with these things so
yeah um it's just
life nowadays you know people love love to criticize
but uh again turning
that into something that's positive where you want to go prove them wrong
and and and makes you work that little
bit hard is is the main thing very mature
outlook
60 years old
I would say that most the majority
of people enjoy watching you have fun while you're driving
yeah that's the thing
people love watching you drive
you kind of too much fun
because you're not taking it seriously no no you have to have more fun
this is it you've chosen
to do this is your job it's the
maddest sport in the world no I know it's fun right so
that's I know that's where our angle is always
this is fun and I retire in a couple years
great to know don't say that
you can't say that because now you'll be asked
about that 50,000 times like that
yeah yeah yeah it'll sell
more caps this year though yeah get them while you can
get them while you can yeah
I'm retiring at the end of this year
