Maddie Gordon will be joining us on this show following up her first win in top fuel.

Hello, Maddie. Welcome back.

Hi, Joe. Thank you so much for having me, especially the Fourth of July edition show.

Like how cool is that?

America 250.

It almost doesn't make sense.

When I was three years old, we went through our, you know, my age now, 53.

We went to the Bicentennial and I went to Disney.

And I remember it was the biggest deal in the world, like Bicentennial of the country.

Here we are 50 years later, 250 years, quarter of the way to a thousand.

And I can't think of a better person to talk to someone 22 years old

who has caught their American dream.

A truly, I mean, it I it's been amazing, absolutely amazing.

Like the Sunday, gosh, I mean, it couldn't have been any more perfect.

Like, you know, I dream I truly have laid in bed

so many nights just dreaming of this right here.

And, you know, my sister's got a diamond Wally.

My dad's got a diamond Wally.

My Ron has multiple and I just I just would

it's just I'm speechless.

Like this is just everything we worked for.

Everything, every single one of our guys on the team have worked for Rob, Troy,

Chuck, every single one of them.

And, you know, to do it with my dad winning, beating Sean,

Bellamy are in the final, the killer bees.

I mean, what an absolute just amazing team they are.

And to get a win against them is an accomplishment in itself.

And then, you know, before that round, I texted my family.

I couldn't go up and watch it.

But, you know, I said, you know, good luck.

And can you start the trend for us?

And and then he won.

And then for Ron to win right in front of me, you know, just I'm sitting in the

water box and when he won, oh, my gosh, just so happy for him and the whole Napa team.

And then I'm just like, man, it would just be too perfect.

Like it would just be too good.

Like how could this be possible?

And then that win like came on and holy heck, it's like, oh, my God, just absolutely amazing.

Amazing, amazing.

And I want to get into all of that, right?

Because the numbers say that you had to think and Caps even said it.

He told me he's like, you know, when Doug won and I wasn't sure and all of a

sudden the odds are going down, but the odds are not going down.

That's not how it works.

It's the odds or whatever they are every single time.

That's that's us.

But you were the cleanup hitter on the triple or the double double.

And your dad had one and Caps had one.

And nothing you think in that moment matters to whether or whether or not you

win, but it had to be tough to shake that off.

Oh, absolutely.

You know, I just, you know, sitting in the water box.

I'm, I've took, you know, just try to stay calm, just stay calm, stay focused.

And of course, you know, you got the run and then I get to see the whole team

celebrating in front of me, which was so, so special because like Ron says,

we are two cars, one team.

So every single one of Ron's guys has helped in some way, some shape or

form on the top field car.

And so to watch them celebrate is so special.

And then I get to, you know, see Ron celebrating on the big screen.

And then the interview, it's like, man, I want to do that.

So dang bad.

I want to be right where he is.

And, oh gosh, but, you know, but you have a job to do and you don't get to

that point unless you stay focused and can't think about that.

You can't think about it, but how do you not, not think about it?

Um, but, you know, when that, when the car fired up, it's just business.

You just got to let it go and just, you know, I just got to do my job.

And, um, every single one of our guys, all 10 of our Carlisle team members

have put together the race car, absolutely perfect.

So I can go out there, hit the gas and just do the best that I can.

And, you know, I went out there with the mindset of just, just do your job.

And, uh, whatever happens, happens.

No matter what, we had a great day.

Great day.

We qualified, we qualified well.

And every single one of our guys just did a great job.

And I wanted this so badly for, you know, myself, of course, but far more, far

more than that, um, there's so many people who just took a chance on this team.

I mean, this was not, it wasn't like we jumped in to a proven car.

I mean, the car was a, a known car, but we, this is a brand new team.

Like, I mean, we've got Robin Troy, very experienced crew chiefs, of course,

very well known, truck, gross bitch, truck, gross pitch proved why he is such

a valuable team member first round.

What he did was absolutely amazing.

That's insane.

That, that one, we're going to, we got to pick, pick that up in a second

because I watched it and, and actually you and I had a bit of a kind of a weird

moment in that moment.

I don't imagine you would remember, but that was, that was crazy.

And I was like, uh, but, but first I want to give a moment to our listeners

out there who are just all queued up, um, to comment and say congratulations to

you.

And that's one thing I think is unique about WFO is that people are able

to, you know, connect directly with the drivers like a Kenneth, just

congratulations, Maddie.

You did an awesome job.

Uh, every, everybody out there, uh, saying congratulations to Maddie Gordon.

Congratulations from your biggest, smallest fan.

Uh, what is it?

Uh, we will, we will see congratulations.

It's like, you got a lot of fans, well, and I don't expect you could have heard

the crowd.

Yeah, it's going faster.

Right.

Everybody is like Maddie.

Maddie from Montana, Cardin, Mike Mosley says, congratulations, Maddie knows

for nitro, Maddie, D rail, Maddie.

Oh my gosh, this is Maddie mania.

This is a real thing.

This is a thing that is happening in our sport, the energy that you're bringing.

My feet are cramping.

I'm like, I'm just so happy.

This is so cool.

Big congratulations to the driver family.

We love you picked her to win from my bracket bonanza.

Um, all of it.

Congratulations to Maddie.

More congratulations to Maddie.

Congratulations.

This one's changing.

Maybe we maybe switch it up and it was cool listening to Ron and the media

center kind of talk a little bit about it.

He did not have to pick you.

He took a big chance.

He did the right thing.

He picked someone because his gut told him that it was going to work out, but

there were other people who had, you know, big checks that could have helped

shoulder the cost.

He who knows the sponsorship situation.

And to me, that's why I admire caps so much because when, when the chips were

down and his own personal business was on the line, he could have taken the

easy way and instead he stayed with his initial plan and he trusted himself and

he picked you and put you in the car.

And a lot of people were like, you know, I don't know.

And it worked out.

Yeah.

No, you're absolutely right.

I mean, he put, he truly did put his business on the line.

And like he said, he doesn't have some big company to fall back on.

This is how he feeds his family, how he pays his bills.

Um, it's not just him.

It's his wife, Shelley, his daughter, Taylor, his sister in law, Lori.

Uh, I mean, this is Ron caps is, I mean, Ron caps is Napa.

Like it's like they're, they're intertwined.

Um, you know, but I mean, truly, you know, choosing me to drive was definitely a

harder route.

I mean, like you said, there's plenty of very talented drivers, um, who have proven

themselves in these race cars who have checks with more zeros than I've ever seen

anywhere near my bank account.

Um, you know, prior to it's just like, like a lot of people with a lot of money

who, who just could hand Ron the check and they could buy all the parts they need.

And if that's never what it was about for Ron and, um, I, I just, I take so much

pride in that and I think I owe him like 10 years of my life for the amount of

stress that I've put on his life.

Um, but you know, he smiles a lot and I think he's having a really good time.

And I know I'm having a really good time.

That's for sure.

But you know what?

He, he named me his top deal driver before I ever drove a dragster with a blower on

it.

I never drove a top dragster with a blower on it.

I never drove an alcohol dragster with a blower on it.

I never driven or warmed anything up with nitro.

Like this was so far out of anything I had ever done.

And he believed from the start I could do it.

And honestly, he saw something in me.

I didn't even know I had, I truly did it.

Like, um, but it was his confidence in me that gave me the confidence to get in the

top field dragster.

I mean, we're in Gainesville going to get my license and Monday night I'm in the

hotel room like, Oh my gosh, am I really about to do this?

Like, can I do this?

And it's Ron's confidence in me that never wavered.

That gave me the confidence that if he thinks I can do this, then I can do this.

And he's by my side the entire way.

And, you know, just, just, just hats off to Ron.

I mean, I just so blessed to be part of his organization.

And, you know, with Carlisle Tools, Carlisle Tools is Napa's, Napa's tool company.

You know, and so Ron brought up adding another car and brought me up as the driver.

And, and they, they were all, all in from the start.

And same thing with them.

They were all in before I had ever hit the gas pedal.

I mean, we're going around naming me as, you know, the driver for Carlisle Tools

and, and, and in this top field dragster.

And I never even sat in one before.

And so it's like, Oh my gosh, you know, but they, their confidence in me never

wavered and they believed in me from the start.

And, you know, I love tools, getting to work with tools and like work on race

cars and drive race cars.

That's what I've done since I was eight years old.

And so getting to represent a cool tool company like Carlisle, using their tools

every day, truly when I'm at home or whether I'm at the races, it is just,

it's a dream, dream partnership.

And I'm just so honored to sit here with this trophy and drive for RCM and

Carlisle and Napa.

It's just, it's, it's a blessing.

And to beat a fellow tool truck in the final round, right?

Over there, like that's why Carlisle did this right there.

That moment is why Carlisle did it like, Hey, NHRA people who clearly the tool

manufacturers understand that the audience for drag racing are doers.

We buy tools.

We're not going to hire somebody.

We're going to do it ourselves.

We're going to keep our tools.

We're going to maintain our tools.

We're not buying cheap tools.

We're buying good tools and they realize that and they want to be in front of us.

And it's not just your brand.

It's a whole bunch of others that have been here for a long time.

So who's going to win in the tool factory battle?

And on this given day, Carlisle got the job done.

Let's tell the story about round one because it never got off the ground.

And you had a problem and just pick it up from there because you got to run

Spencer Massey, Spencer's tough.

Spencer was having a good weekend, qualified.

Well, best run since buying that car.

And they waited.

I don't know exactly how it all worked out, whether Scott said, Hey, we're not

going to fire until they're ready, but you were afforded a little extra time.

And and you earned the cockpit of the race car and Chuck Cross pitch just goes to work.

I don't know how his hands even worked.

His hands are like twat, like this big, like his hands are huge.

Like, I don't even know how he got his arms in that tiny hole.

It's amazing.

You know, you know what?

First off, before I even go into what happened, Spencer Massey, I mean, if it was

not for Spencer Massey and their sportsmanship, this would not be in California right now.

Absolutely not, not even a chance.

You know, they, they waited and they said, absolutely not.

We are not firing until they are ready.

And they waited and were so just, just hats off to them.

I mean, true racers right there, true sportsmanship.

They did not have to do that.

They could have fired and made the run while we were still working and we would never

had a shot and but they didn't and truly hats off to them.

Just so grateful for that team.

Well, we had going on basically, Chuck Grosspitz.

Gosh, I'm stuttering.

Chuck Grosspitz.

Come on, Chuck, with a very challenging last year.

I know, we need to, we need to like, Chuck G, Chuck G.

There we go.

Chuck.

I tried to interview Chuck after that and Bruno came in and got him.

But I was like, give me the exact pronunciation of your last name.

But he gives Grosspitz.

Grosspitz, I'm going to write, go Chuck G because he was the G in that

moment, so we're going to go with that.

But anyways, so there's this, there's this flat, basically, you know, I mean,

the hole is only that big where they open up the flap and sometimes you'll see

crew chiefs in there making changes.

But what's also in there is the air bottle.

And so he turns the air bottle on when we're in the water box.

Well, when he did it, it blew the airline.

It didn't blow it out of the fitting.

It blew it.

It was broke.

And without that, the car will not start.

We have no safety systems, so the car will not start.

So, I mean, it's, it's fluster now because by the time that thing blew, the

pair in front of us is already going down the racetrack.

So I can't see his hands because there's a, like a driver's compartment.

So I can't see where his hands are going, but I can see, I can see his arms and

he's working very quickly.

And I had an idea of what was going on because I could hear the air blow.

And then so basically he's in there trying to figure out what are we going to do?

What are we going to do?

We don't have any extra lines.

We don't have any extra fittings.

How are we going to fix this?

What are we going to do?

So he's trying to think quick, right?

And in the meantime, I can see, I can see the, um, uh, little bit of stress.

Now Chuck's line is ABC, always be cool.

And he is always cool, always calm, always collected.

And he really did keep his composure through this whole entire situation.

So long story short, he is just working super quickly and trying to think, what

can we take off the car that is, we're not going to do anything illegal.

That's absolutely not going to happen.

But what can we spare to, to fix this?

So the blower oiler.

So he goes back there, rips the line off.

Cause we can spare a blower to make this round.

So rips the line off, goes and he's plumbing it in.

He's, he's figuring out, takes the old line out, plumbing the new line.

And, and I can see him start to stress now because by this time Spencer,

their NHRA is forcing Spencer to fire.

He has to, he has to fire.

There's no choice.

Um, and so by this time, right about this time is when I pointed to you, Joe,

I'm like, Joe, get my dad.

And you're like, no, no.

No.

So I was like, is she talking to me?

So I guess, so I looked to the left and I looked to the right.

Like she can't be talking to me right now.

Right.

There's nobody else.

And I look back at you and you're like, yeah, you, and I'm like, okay, me.

What?

And you're like, you looked at your dad, like get my dad.

And I was like, yeah.

And then you're like, oh, and then drops.

And I got up and I was like, uh, so I guess you could ask him what was up.

Yes.

I'm like, Hey, dad, what's going on?

He's like, Hey, you blew it.

You blew air.

I'm like, okay, well, can at least let me stage the car.

Like if we can't run, like let me stage the car.

He's like, that ain't my call.

I'm not making that call.

Well, literally, I know we couldn't even fire the car.

So anyway, so my dad was going to keep me updated.

And then.

All right.

So we're getting it.

We're really close.

And by this time, like I said, NHRA, uh, you know, we got a show.

We totally get it.

We got to fire.

So they fired Spencer did a miraculously extra, very long burnout, uh, which gave

us the extra time that we needed.

So again, another hats off to Spencer.

Um, and then we got the car fired up and it was like jam, jam, jam.

I mean, as fast as you can go because we are not going to hold him up any longer.

Super short burnout back up, charge all the systems, get me, get us at the

pre-stage and it was like super quickly.

Um, anyway, we made the run, got the win.

Um, and just like, it was so stressful.

But in that moment, it's like, there's nothing I can do about it.

I, I cannot solve this problem.

All I can do is do my job and not let my team down.

I cannot let myself get flustered because of what happened.

I need to be able to stay calm for, for my team and, uh, just do what I can do.

And, um, coming down the racetrack and saw that win line.

And that was the beginning of the best day ever.

The beginning of the best day ever.

He had a good light 77.

Spencer was 62 and he went in, you went in 85.

He went up in smoke and that was that setting up a second round match up

against Tony Stewart, which I feel like you guys have been racing a lot now.

You and smoke have been like hammering on each other.

Uh, the start of this season, I don't know how many, maybe you know, off

the top, feels like a lot in him.

Really four to 10.

Yeah.

Wow.

Four out of 10.

And so 40% of your round one races or, or four out of 10 races, you've

run Tony Stewart.

That's why, yeah, tell me about that run.

Yeah.

Um, that was, that was pretty crazy.

You know, like, I mean, we, we've run him almost half the races, which is insane.

I mean, and Tony Stewart, he's one of the biggest names ever.

So, um, lining up against him is just truly an honor, but, um, you know,

always a good race with him.

He's always cutting good lights, cars going down the racetrack and, um,

Robin Choi, we want to make an A to B run.

And that's what was most important to us.

And, uh, you know, Tony ended up going up in smoke pretty early and, uh,

we trucked on through there.

I obviously didn't know that he went up in smoke.

So I'm going down there like, oh, I didn't hear him, but sometimes you

can't hear him.

So I'm like, oh, and, uh, and, uh, I was pretty pumped up because just

to beat Tony Stewart, I mean, he's, he's one of the best for rightfully so.

And, uh, one of the biggest names in, in racing.

So, uh, you know, beating him and his team is, um, it's a big deal.

Yeah, absolutely is.

And then that sets up the semifinal against Sean, your first round

win ever was against Sean.

I know Sean was helpful.

Sean is dominating the season.

He's got a hundred point lead over Doug, his teammate.

And what we're experiencing with Sean Langdon and Brian Hueson and those

guys, really amazing.

But in this given circumstance, you don't care about any of that.

You got to go out there and beat them and a similar deal.

You did your job, got off the starting line and not just, uh, he, but

both of you had a little trouble getting down the racetrack.

And you had to, you had to pedal the car and get down through there.

Yes.

Uh, you know, Sean, Sean helped me out a ton, uh, in the beginning of my

career before I even started, he was my top fuel mentor.

Uh, some questions that I had, Ron said, basically, I can't even answer

some of the questions you have.

There's specific top fuel.

And, uh, Sean Langdon went out of his way to really help me out and

mentored me a lot.

And so, you know, running him is, it's a big deal for one, because

they have an amazing team and the best car right now, uh, clearly with

their points lead, but, um, at that time, it does, none of that matters

because you got to run this round right now.

It doesn't matter what happened in the past or what's going to happen in

the future or whatever, but you got to run this round.

And, um, prior to that, I had pedaled the car once and I was very unhappy

with the way that I, I pedaled it and, uh, I wanted to do better.

And my next personal goal was to win in a pedal fest.

And I can't believe it was against Sean Langdon.

Like that's mind blowing.

Uh, I never would have guessed that I would do it against him, but, um, you

know, we went out there and now he did lose traction very early in the run.

Uh, we, we were a little bit further down track.

So I had a bit of a headstart when I did have to pedal it.

Um, but, you know, Ron told me one of these times it's going to go up in smoke

and your foot's just going to go off and you're just going to, you're just

going to slap it.

And I'm like, but Ron, there's got to be some way I can practice.

How can I practice?

He's like, don't, there's nothing you can do.

Just don't think about it.

Just, you know how to drive.

One of these times your foot's just going to go like, okay, all right.

So then, and he was exactly right.

It went up in smoke and I lifted and I rolled back in and I got back on and I

can feel it.

It's like I'm doing a burnout for a 500 feet.

It is just dog tracking and it is just mean.

This thing sounds like it is screaming at me.

Like if you don't lift, I'm going to blow up.

That's what the engine was telling me, but luckily with our amazing partners,

we are able to afford extra motors.

So I didn't have to lift.

We like that thing to the end and a man, we didn't blow up, which thank goodness.

Thank goodness.

Um, but I wasn't lift until I cross that finish line and, uh, we got the

win and holy smokes.

That was again, another monumental personal goal to lead us to the final

to lead us to the final, which, uh, again, people are out there.

Congratulations, uh, the Valley Sun.

It's been done 10 times, uh, with Sadie Glenn and Brenda Grubbs and

Maddie Gordon, who all have last names, which is, you know, a coincidence,

One of the most incredible days of her life has come full circle here.

This is amazing.

And Maddie, and in just your 10th race as a driver, you were forever a top

fuel winner and the guy that believed in you just showed you your time slip.

How was your entire life prepared you for this moment?

Every single day of my life, I've, I was in my mom's belly at the drag

races and, uh, when my first drag race at eight days old, never did I believe

I drive a top fuel dragster, but it's this guy right here, Ronald Kapps.

And, uh, man, he made what felt like an impossible thing in reality.

And my team, our team, they worked so hard weekends, holidays, birthdays.

Thank you to their families for letting them come out and drag race.

This is, this is everything right here.

Blood sweat and literally tears is what goes into this and Carlisle tools and Napa.

You guys believed in me and Ron and our whole team.

Man, I can't thank you guys enough.

This is the best day of my life.

When you see that now and you, you relive that moment, all the work.

Why do you call him Ronald Kapps in that moment?

Where'd that come from?

I don't know.

I just, he's Ron Kapps to everybody, but I don't know.

I just, I call him either Ron or Ronald.

That's just like, I don't know.

He's, he's more special than, I guess, I don't know.

He's more than Ron Kapps.

He's Ron or Ronald to me.

I, well, listen, so caps and you shared the, uh, the reel that we did on

Instagram where Ron is like laughing that there's so much louder for

Maddie than they are for me.

And then you go up there and you're like, yeah, he was, we should just leave.

He was hysterical about it.

All right.

Now I want to give you the opportunity to see the Joe's eye view and I want

you to listen for something very special here.

And this is what impressed me.

This is something to me that is very significant for all of us.

You know, in drag racing, all the fans, it's not like a football game where

you're a home game for one team.

And so when they score a touchdown, everybody cheers.

At a drag race, the largest number of fans is pretty small because it's

everybody altogether unless you're one person and that person is John force.

And then everybody's like, yeah, we saw John win.

You have done it Macy has joined us the Gordon family. Welcome to winning in the mission foods

drag racing series. You guys doubled up. Doug Christina, how does it feel? Oh man, one a day for the

Gordy's and for Rodcats motor sports. That guy right there, man. He's a badass. Rob Flynn. I mean,

and then it only lasts three minutes. I can only record for three minutes. Oh my gosh.

My cheeks are like like fidget like that. Just like it's just like what's so special to me is like

like I can just be myself. Like I I just love this sport so much. Like everything in my life

has been about drag racing. Like it always has been everything.

Everything is about how to get to the next race wins the next race. What can I watch about racing?

How can I learn? And I just want to share that. I just want to share that experience with the fans

because I know not everybody gets to drive one of these top field dragsters and I want to share

my experiences. I want to share everything that goes through my head. The heart attack I felt

like I had after first round. The sometimes I feel like I'm going to pee my pants because the

belts are so tight and I have a small bladder and and oh my gosh there was rain and I had to be in

the car for a long time or whatever. Like I just just vomit of the mouth. Like I just I just love

to just share these experiences with the fans and just show my excitement and my love for the sport

and my love for the fans and our partners and our team and it's just like it just it makes me so

how I get emotional. It makes me so happy that like they see it and they they love it and

they love me just for being me and it's just so it's so refreshing and that means so much.

Like 10th race ever and everybody in the stands is standing up and cheering like

I wish I could sign for every single one of them. I really do. I wish I had enough time in the day

to sign and get pictures with everybody. I do my best to make as much time as I possibly can

because they are why we are out here. It is so true. Yeah something is happening.

Well I think you just laid it out there from your perspective but that is also the reason

why people like it. There's no agenda. You're a you know what I will call a drag racing kid.

Your parents drag raced. Your grandparents drag raced. You're about drag racing. You'd be drag

racing if nobody watched. You love drag racing. There's a there it's a we're a small sport. We are

trying to grow and when someone is really passionate and genuine and pure without an

agenda other than the obvious one which is what you just stated. You love drag racing and you

want to share that. People eat it up. They like it and it's refreshing and now in this time where

you know like a lot of people love John and they loved Brittany and they're like man who do I root

for. You can't just adopt someone that you didn't root for. You usually want to start with someone

new and here you are emerging on the scene and I know a lot of those people they're like you know

they'll always love John and Brittany forever forever but they got someone new to start out with

fresh and you're giving them a lot to cheer for. So let's look ahead western

swing next. Sonoma that's got to be your you know home race or yeah it definitely is. It's

and we have so so many family and friends coming to Sonoma. It's it's pretty insane.

It's it's extra special because my sister's racing there too. There's only two national

events in the entire year that Macy and I raced the same event and that's Phoenix and here so

she's running her super comp and top dragster there. She's running the divisional event before

in the national so I'll be there from Tuesday on to do some media and also cheer on my sister so

it's an extra special weekend. It's you know one of our home races. It's one of our it's home to a

couple of our crew members as well. So it's it's it's a big deal. A really big deal. I'm glad we

are. I'm glad we're going back there. You know we could talk all day. I know you got other interviews

so we're going to let you go next week though. I want you to know that we've booked this Ronald

Capps character is going to be on the show to talk about his 80th win. Sadie Glenn also going

to be on the show. Kenny Levansky our starter in the 75th season of NHRA going to be on the show.

So we got a big show planned for next week starting from now. We already got it locked in guys. It's

going to be great but is you know I looked at Troy fashion. Troy fashion man. There's a guy that was

on the sidelines and he got brought back for this and Rob Flynn. Billy Carroll mentions Rob Flynn

Darryl Gwynne connection Rob Flynn. Here's a guy who's so quiet just a quiet guy going to work

and so many positive storylines with your big win. But maybe there was something we didn't touch on.

We didn't talk about. You said I got 100 stories and you certainly do. But is there anything else

that we didn't get to that I should have asked you about that I didn't. And if not then a final

thought for the WFO universe out there. Yeah you know just just so proud of of our whole team.

This was a team that was built from the ground up. It was you know like we were looking for

trucks trailers parts pieces blowers engines pistons rings all of it. You know just people crew

members in the off season. You know this was a brand new team and we had a team meeting with our

Carlyle Tools boys in the trailer after the win and just how much how much pride they felt.

We had some people who had won for the first time on our team and so special for them.

But for the guys that have won before they felt an extra sense of pride in this one because they

helped build this team in so many ways they helped train the couple new guys that we have

and boy they have been doing absolutely amazing truly amazing for Rob and Troy.

You know like you said Rob Flynn he's so quiet he's quiet but he's also he's quiet and just

like you know like he's not one to just like go out and yell and and you know all that stuff but

but he is head down focused and he has taught me so much and you know me I'm all riled up and

million miles an hour and just speaking and and half the time he's like huh like I want to slow

down a little bit um but you know what he always reminds me to stay calm stay focused and have fun

because that's what we're out here doing is having fun and if you're not having fun then

I don't know you're in the wrong sport because if you're not having fun this sport's way too

much work um but that's what we're all having fun we all enjoy it but just so proud of every

single one of them in ten races what we've been able to accomplish is just it's very special and

so just thanks to my team and Carlisle and Napa Monster Energy all of our partners who help us

out wouldn't be possible and we wouldn't be able to have this beautiful diamond wally if it wasn't

for all of them so thank you to everybody who's amazing and the family's all got one now like

comparison is true because of that that's that that's the comparison when john won john told you

a story it was a journey about the victory he'll tell you the peak and the valley and like he

thought he was going to win but then he wasn't going to win and it was going wrong and I don't know

and then I won and then there was Elvis he tells you this long story and people love to hear stories

and maddie gordon just naturally she tells you a story about how she felt and what went down

how you doing joe okay what do you think of matty gordon let's get oh man i don't even know how to

follow that i've actually worked with her for a little while i've done shirts for her and her dad's

funny car team i do shirts for their business in that so i've known them for a little while

good people well very intuitive of you that she is uh i believe the term is tough act to follow

yes yes but we're gonna do it and i think we can do it i think we can do it because you are in the

business of something that everybody likes drag racing t-shirts this is a cornerstone

foundational uh building block of the sport of drag racing back to the days of snake and

mongoose how did you get started in drag racing and let's talk let's do a deep dive on drag racing

t-shirts so we started in our garage just the family business just making t-shirts and going

out to the old uh automotive swap meets around southern california here and we were doing shirts

or a lot of the racetracks that closed ocir urwindale lyon san anis and franando and we

would sell shirts for those at the events now when was it this was probably 88 89 and then i met uh

tom akuen at one of the car shows when he was running the coupers corvette and i started buying

shirts from him and i would go to the world finals and buy shirts from all the other drivers

because they were going to change their shirt for next year and eventually tom said i'll get you

hooked up with a few drivers and um i get a phone call from ed mccollick one time when he ran that

513 down in houston in the miller highlight funding car and asked me to do a shirt for him

so that was my first deal uh in the big name drivers i got him and then i got darrell gwin and

then warren johnson so pretty good three to start with for me for uh doing shirts and the rest is

history you've been involved in the business ever since i see classic graphics and you know whenever

you buy a shirt guys chance start you'll see that little placard that is inside the uh the wrap of

exactly yeah i started bagging shirts in the beginning because i went to the track and saw that

people weren't some of the drivers were not having their shirts out there for sale because

they didn't want to have to wash their hands if it was a you know a sportsman racer that

works on his car and tries to sell t-shirts so i thought if i bagged him it would be a lot easier

on everybody to do that plus i got a little advertisement out of it we got involved with

this red line shirt club about four years ago and it's a new drag racing shirt every month

all the members get a shirt and they don't know what it is each once it's a new deal

so it's worked out pretty good for us for the membership deal it's 25 bucks for a small

size small through extra large and 28 for double x so it's really worked out good

we've got quite a few members and it's still growing we were down for a little while as

rebuilding the website but um we got it back up last about a month and a half ago and going strong

right now so like today's the last day for the june shirt and it actually is a billie meyer when

he won the 72 drag races at ocir for the uh the manufacturers cup championship scott are you there

i've lost your voice ladies and gentlemen like i was in a black hole it was a it was like i went

into space and time it was crazy i saw the future past it was just amazing it was amazing

we started talking about drag racing history scott and internet crapped out and but now we're back

are you with us can you hear me yeah i don't worry i coach him up on how to do this also

i'm gonna kick him out and put guys let me tell you something that was one of the weirdest things

ever everything went dark and i thought to myself okay listen to listen to what chuck

gross pitch says always be cool and we were and we stayed cool and we okay here i am hired it up

and now we're back and that little piece of time that we had moments ago everyone will just forget

about it i was saying to you how i just admire this is art this is part of drag racing kenny

youngblood has been on in the past and he is an artist he has changed the way we think about

the sport and in many ways you are too what goes into one of these shirts these racing shirts we

see them all but we don't know how how does the sausage get made yeah i mean i i kind of think

about somebody i can do a shirt for from most of these designs are all pre-80 funny cars and

dragsters and pro stocks and that and like they're up on the screen is proc and hell well i knew

tom proc from the early days so i was able to get a hold of him and with each shirt we ship out we

put a little hero card in there and on the back of the hero card we tell the story of the vehicle

that is running here like this surely modality one that just popped up that specific car we'll put

the history of that car and what it did that was pretty important at that time so let's talk about

and go back to the itery races and you'll get uh you'll get a lot of guys back there because there's

a lot of grass racers back there so i started flying back there i think in 93 i landed in charlotte

drove over to bristol tennessee to go to a drag race and met up with scottie canon and all those

guys back there and started printing shirts for them also wow it's been a pretty cool ride for me

and i've been over to katar oh really what was that like oh i mean it was just i had i was doing

work for ellen abbey at the time and i had just got back from somewhere mentioned to him that

had been need to go to a race over there sometime got to work the next morning i had a first class

ticket to leave in two days and was in katar for a week and went over to the drags over there

that was a pretty cool experience oh my goodness i uh i can't even imagine what that would be like

everybody says it's beautiful and amazing and the passion for drag racing is through the roof

now you did a certain uh podcast t-shirt to the 10th anniversary of wfo shirt with uh a likeness

of me on the back it was a very popular shirt for our fan base and it was out there randy linn

had it in her trailer for a long time uh when you first saw that one you know what did you think

like who the heck are you well yeah but it's i always like i mean randy linn has always been a

pretty good uh advocate for us she we get along real well and uh we work good together so yeah i

was glad that we got hooked up and then it just worked out that this deal was coming along and

i thought your program would be a good place to promote the deal our people are the most die hard

drag racing fans they really are and uh the thing that i'm probably the most proud of uh first of all

we had like 350 people on our stream most people listen and watch after the fact right but we had

like 350 live because of matty and we still got through 342 after a minute and a half of just dead

air knows what happened these people hung tough they knew i would get back but also they're positive

these are positive drag racing fans these are not the kind of people that are you know complaining

and negative and man back in the golden age things were better and it's too expensive or i don't

like this these are positive motivated excited drag racing fans that we have kind of cultivated

here in the wfo universe and that that to me is what it's all about yeah and that's what that's

what our base is too they're big fans and some of them can't get to the racetrack so they have no way

to go out and get a shirt or if they're a fan of the old you know some people i like the racing

back in the old days well then i've got a shirt for you you know and each month is going to be a

new one and it's a pretty cool process and i haven't had uh anybody that i've contacted between

per dome and mcqueen and bruce larson and ricky smith and they've all been really positive

but dale poldy we did him surely mulledown the garlets so uh yeah we've got a good group of

people and everybody's been real responsive to uh being involved with the club and how does that

work they they have this old artwork or they just tell you what was and you recreate it yeah we just

you know ask him what era car that one either a big race a championship or set a record would you

like us to do and then we'll design it and we get them to approve it um but it's a brand new design

we don't pull old artwork and it's not something that's really being sold anywhere else so we'll

develop something new just for the club members so they can kind of have something that somebody

else can't get wow that is super cool all right let's give that website one more time rl shirt club

this thing going again because it's got to be there's a certain amount of overhead

for this like the new club there's got to be like just the work and the effort in addition to what

you do on a regular basis sure i mean for one we got to do hero cards every month and plus a new

piece of artwork every month and it's a limited deal you know where if i do a shirt for you know

warren johnson when he was racing a lot well they could reorder that shirt 10 times you know for

the whole year this is one month one and done so it's a new piece of artwork so yeah there is an

expense but it's well worth it uh to be able to keep this thing going ah there it is now who are

some of the teams that you work with like i've already got someone out here that says that you're

the best in the business right like classic graphics best in the business nose for nitro look at that

very nice um you're getting a lot of positive compliments on here and i appreciate you coming

on uh look scott waited for me like spencer waited on maddie that's very cool so thank you for waiting

um and i do spencers like i did spencers crew uniforms and all their team jackets and things

like that i'm working a new uh billy torrent shirt right now um so yeah i just got an order from

bang in the pro stock rank so um i do a lot of the pro mod guys i'm pretty big over there in the

pro mod world yeah that's what i wanted to know like which current drivers are you working with

because again the t-shirt game is drag racing that is as much part of it as anything else you go to

the racetrack and you get a shirt yeah so over in the pro mod world i mean i do like i travel with

the pdre series and so all the tommy frank glenn's and you know glenn butcher and top sportsman's a

great guy and i do a lot of stuff for him so but i still print for garlets i print for surely

moldownie like she travels around and does shows and i supply her with a lot of her hats and t-shirts

and everything like that so um yeah i'm enjoying the ride i'm a big fan you know i've been going to

races since uh lines racetrack when i was about 56 years old so um i've been going there i

used to play around at ocir so i still love it wow yeah so many people right i think about

ritchard chute and all those guys that have been out there from lions to ocir gary miss aussie

gary my buddy gary yes he's a great guy yeah so he's he's a good guy so yeah just been around

like i say scottie cannon for a long time i did all of his stuff so it's just been a for a fan of

the sport has been really cool to be able to take a business and make it work inside uh the sport you

well i i love it i'm excited about this uh rl shirt club guys go out there join each month

started asking him questions and this is what i love about drag races is that they're very talkative

and started asking him do you like it and what do you like about it and what do you think is cool

about it and all these things but he's 15 and he loved it he enjoyed it greatly and had a fun fun

time my friend rick mcdonough got down to four cars in top sportsmen really amazing really amazing

doing real well did have a heartbreaking defeat that he called the toughest of his entire career

which was brutal gave up the finish line striped by 310 thousands of a second in the semi

finals which isn't the worst part of it the worst part of it is that poor glenn butcher

we just talked about a moment ago pretty much drove over his crankshaft in the shutdown area

which meant the guy that rick lost to won the race with a buy run that now he's thinking about like

oh my gosh all i had to do is not give up the win light by 310 thousands he was controlling

the race had the better reaction i'm but he did those are the brakes uh saty glenn's win saty glenn

is going to be on the show next week we're going to have ron caps we're going to have saty glenn

and we're going to have the chief starter kenny labansky going to be on the show i've already

booked next week's show already i'm very proud of that like we're getting ahead but saty who's

going to be on life's a drag tomorrow with elen and abby much like maddie saty has been

just drag racing for life she loves this stuff her business in drag racing is not i mean it's to

make money but it's a way to be in drag racing because she loves it so much uh got married to

dalis but saty was drag racing before she met dalis to my understanding she's a drag racing kid and

as you know confide saty i hope it's okay as confided in me in times like you know we when

we're talking about what the heck are we doing me with project paniac and super street and she

with her top dragster like should we be doing this should should we be doing this and the answer

is yes cuz yolo and to see her out there when winning an event to win a walley that is motivation

she is now a different type of human she's the type of human being on planet earth that is one

a walley there's a very small percentage and we were all and i you know everybody that works

with and around saty we're super happy and proud of her um not for winning winning is

part of it it's the racing gods that decide it's your day or it's not your day who knows

but for the tenacity to keep going and to be there and to sleep in the trailer on an air mattress

and you know shower at the track to do all of those things to put herself in position for the

racing gods to shine upon her it was awesome so i would encourage you to watch saty tomorrow on

in the final round hard for three consecutive final rounds four if you count the getricks

pro stock all star call out which was won by dallas glenn but erin stanfield is the type of driver

that can dial up a double o two when he needs it and he needed dialed it up and he now

when i say dial it up i mean like dig down deep like a pitcher who's closing out a baseball game

needs that 101 mile per hour fastball and needs to they say reach down and get it and make it happen

it's the same thing for a driver and erin of course very humble guy i don't know i woke up on the

right side of the bed no that's not what it is it's talent and ability and he did it then he got the

didn't get the opportunity to bring the car to the track i'm gonna try to get to rockingham i don't

get the opportunity to race for a national event walley um super street only gets to run at one

national event now i think that's dumb i think there should be more i think just because it's

always been that way n h r a should change that rule why only one you've asked me to participate

and i've answered the call i have spent a significant amount of money to be a part of

the lucas oil series to race and this is the only way i can do it i'm sorry i can't go get a carbon

fiber don davis corvette i would love to be able to i can't have to pay for the house of the studio

for the cats they eat so much but this car that my dad bought and helped me invest in i can do this

this is what i can do i get one chance to run a national event you know top dragster they run it

a lot top sportsmen they run it a lot super street just one i think people like to see those cars

they're cool they're classic they're big they're in their natural form 55 Chevrolets and 38 pickup

trucks and just anything there's a wide variety it's a good class people like them why is it that

we only get to run at one national event it's not enough to justify the investment give us another

opportunity please let us yeah i think someone might be might listen to this and you know they're

like joe shut up joe no one will tell me that honestly i i think i've got the ear of people

within the nha and i'm making a case the problem is space at the track right for every class that

gets to go there's another class that doesn't get to go i'm just making the case that i think super

street should get to go to another class to another race another national event more than one per

division one per division is is arbitrary

there's no national championship so it's irrelevant let super street go to more than just one

so that i could try to win a walley in my dad's car on on what would be his 83rd birthday

losing a little guilt there to try to get something done norwalk was the most exciting race

one we did a two-part episode dan fletcher and it is dad's car the checkmate car there's one over

50 nha charry national event wins dan showed us that car and as the episode ended we teased

the next episode which is hatari 2.0 with peter beyondo and dan fletcher and it was

before that run happened it was really great a lot of people think fletcher is a grumpy guy but

you get him talking he's not he's funny and fun and those two old rivals rivals from years ago

running out of the same trailer today it was like apollo and and rocky working together to beat

drago fantastic show today ice cream contest was epic glad to see the hatari back again

i think peter beyondo this is just my observation i think peter beyondo was

surprised at the impression and the legacy that he's left at the nha in the lucas oil series

so many people were just appreciative of his presence appreciate he's got a family and he's

got a business and his business is dealing with racers and so you know it's complex complex people

you know it's not all puppy dogs and ice cream and just maybe this is the only time we're going to

see peter but he needed to know that his presence motivated a lot of us there's john force for the

mainstream crowd for the sports and racer and lucas oil crowd the way peter handled himself

it was really good you didn't mention the ice cream winner a pint consumed in a minute yeah

well this was before i started to do it thank you lani for bringing it up great show today

hey joe you should replay you and brian's interview with jim head kudos to you and brian

i thought it was awesome chat with a drag racing legend oh say somebody brought it up

you think i can read this i can't read this jim head was amazing the guy was great i've been

thinking about that interview that brian and i did with him we got to hang out there we had so

much fun i had fun brian had fun dare i say jim head had fun thinking about the old times and

talking about experiments gone awry he was great he was well spoken the whole time we were dealing

with a horrific audio echo in our ears it was about a second behind behind and so every every

time time time you talk you were hearing the hearing this this this and jim head

just fought right through it like a champ like a pro it was a mind scramble so we did the best

we could if there was any like loose ends that didn't get mentioned like i was supposed to mention

drag race bracket by nanza and i didn't it was because of that but i thought to myself

we've been giving jim head a bad rap for 20 years i've only been around for like 13 of those years

or 12 whatever it is

but this legend urban legend urban myth that jim head is a grumpy man

that is mean spirited and don't talk to him or not mean spirited that might be too extreme but

you know you get it you don't you know it that's not factually accurate

no nonsense tell it like it is a serious person but also with a sense of humor i think more accurate

and i think that i just so happy with it and i would love for n h r a and and they

you have to have n h r a tv to go back but those sessions with garlets and the greek

and jim head they should be available somewhere but they weren't available on youtube that was

broadcasted youtube so people can go back and find it on youtube it was good stuff was there in person

watch live yeah this is just us kicking it here i watched the ice cream eating contest it was cool

to see hey and win it good i'm glad you guys liked it the ice cream contest was funny why were there

got going on america 250 very excited about america 250 this is what it's all about our country

getting together this is not an ordinary fourth of july this is the fourth of july unless you

plan on living to america 300 which that will put me at 103 not impossible do i want to do it

i don't know watching all these world cup people come into our country

and be so happy with it and they're like buckies wow refillable sodas free refills this is amazing

oh my gosh walmart parking lot this is the biggest parking lot i've ever seen

look at this highways that are five lanes wide wow and everybody is so nice welcoming saw the

tardon army a couple of those guys in miami airport when we got back sometimes sometimes

you need a little reminder of how good you've got it and this reminder is coming at just the right

time 250 years of the united states of america we've been doing it everything we've done as a

country has it been the right thing has it been a great thing not everything no when you're making

hundreds of thousands of decisions over years direction changes but generally the general

theme has been getting better and better and that's the way i choose to look at it save the world and

world war two from fascism people put aside their own selfishness and families and went

got on boats operation overlord they put themselves in harm's way to save others

that's what america is all about and now this weekend we get to go out there and just have a

good time and enjoy ourselves and watch fireworks do not hold in your hand guys do not hold the

fireworks in your hand you gotta you gotta avoid that but amazing stuff amazing stuff and you get

to play your john philip susan you're all kinds of good stuff you get to enjoy a little pro america

but to me my dad and i spent a lot of money on fireworks a lot of times i wish i have that

money back right now like honestly i don't even want to think about how much money i've spent

over fireworks over the decades now we had a blast but if you put a number on that

it could be a new right trailer for wfo radio but we always ended

with the 1812 overture yeah we did music and fireworks you gotta do music with your fireworks

guys if you're not doing music with your fireworks you're doing it wrong you get the biggest sound

system you can and you queue up the john philip susan and the check kofsky and you get in there

and you start lighting fireworks off to patriotic music it totally changes it

so happy birthday america and to all of you out there my fellow americans

it's great to be an american we're telling the world the world knows and so it's okay to be happy

and our sport nhre drag racing i'm telling you it's the most american of all

no doubt in my mind it is the most american of all so why don't you do something really american

and participate in a little commerce get yourself a wfo t-shirt
