Pascoe viable Preston. This is your local station. 98.9
Northwest FN. That's right. 98.9 Northwest of
em. Hello, Helen, how are you going?
You listening to Car. Talk on 98.9 Northwest.
The fair was I've just said a show for motoring enthusiasts, so for the next hour, you be telling with me, Mary J, as we talked with as we talk cars and play some music, so glad you guys could join me tight. So, I've got two topics on
tonight. We're going Going to be talking
about hot hatchbacks because one of my favorite genres of car and we're going to be talking about movie Cars, what our favorite movie Cars, I'll be joined by Adam and James just like the car move, you guys are gonna be talking about what they like and, and, you know, basically, what type of cars, they tickle their fancy throughout the years for in hot in the forms of hot hatchbacks, only in movies some, I'll be joined by them surely but tell us what you think. Tell us what your favorites are.
But seeing as the text on. Oh, double for double seven,
double 79 down. Your 98.9 Northwestern FAMU.
Speaking with Matt I'm now in the studio with James and Adam say hi boys, Good morning Vietnam.
I always wanted to do that. You can notice my show.
Don't mind. Oh, good.
Oh good guys. Um, so tonight we're going to
talk about how hot hatches and and movie cars.
But let's start by asking what you guys like.
Your dream cars and your car history, obviously.
So, what's up for you? James?
I'm not a particularly big car person or more of a movie buff, which is why we're talking about movie Cars later on, but my first car, and only car. So far has been Mazda 323 s
Tina, let's write them as the writing.
I call it, I call it amrold, it's green, but a caller Emerald, Emerald, Edith, everybody said that's her name.
I interrupt for a second. Yeah.
Can you tell us the history of the car?
The his I'm not sure how many owners it had but one of them.
But it used to be my sister's car and she treated it so poorly. It's it smells like cigarettes.
It has a cigarette Burns in the seats.
There's just pieces falling off it.
It's kind of lopsided. It leans to the left.
It leaks, it leaks rain water. So it's been raining a lot
lately. So I'm basically driving a pool
but otherwise, it's a good first car for me, I can scratch it.
I can I can beat it up a bit and doesn't really matter.
That's it man. It's first car and and so hot
hatch. That's it.
That's probably the hatch. At least dream car drink.
Probably all-time biggest dream car would, probably be as some Martin DB5. Yeah, just because of James
Bond. Yeah, and I'd like to have it.
I wouldn't even like to drive it.
I just like to have it in my garage, you know, leave it in there. And then I'd get a DB9 to put
next to it. Don't just so I can have the
history of the matching pair that.
Yeah, the pit and then I'll probably just wouldn't touch them. I just like to look at them and
maybe shine them China with a rag or something.
Chevy out of your your car history.
Okay, history. So my first car, first car first
car. Alrighty.
So I've had the same car for about seven years ashtray.
Sorry. Yeah 2.2 2.2 L because all
right. Yeah, because there 42.2 later.
Nice mocha to do it guys. Good.
So yeah. That's my first car.
Yep. Bought it before I got my Peas,
I waited about eight months before I could drive it legally and ya still got it still goes good.
That's it. As you know, it does get very
well. I had the unfortunate losing
against it. I'll have to put that on the
page and choose Oh, my shrah, my misery, your dream cards is too many to name too many to know too many to name, but if I had to name one now as we're talking before, Ferrari F40, the 40 car go wrong. It's, that's the ultimate
Supercar. Like the best Supercar ever many
regard as a Supercar ever. And as I've been told there's
actually a few and Victoria. Yeah, there is yeah.
So pretty cool. Pretty cool.
How to track down. Look, we're gonna go to a break
once we get back. When we talk about movie Cars,
Some. any movie in particular that you goes fancy that you
guys like a mute like a car from There's no ultimate movie other than Gone in 60 seconds. It's got a lot of cars in there.
Look, it almost Trump's Fast and Furious because of the variety of cars, in all honesty. Yeah.
But yeah, it's in pretty good old.
The list is endless from Fast and Furious 2 bullet to vanishing point. I mean, we can talk for ages.
So when we come back, we will Well, yeah, well, we'll talk, but you're not yet. Put my Northwest FM, this is
Mary Jo on car, talk. It time is now 7:12 and we're
gonna go to a song and we're back, sir, I'm back with Adam and James. We're gonna be talking about
movie Cars first. So movie Cars, guys, I'd to me
movie Cars, make the movie, like, there are, there are Untold hero of a, the, the characters in themselves people, people remember them. Fondly more than a lot of other
aspects than the movie, they've got a personality of themselves.
Let's look at Knight Rider. Yeah, that's true.
That's true. Even when they don't talk they
have, but like the Ghost Rider Ghost Writer, sorry, the Ghostbusters car like that. That's a, that has its own
sound, the tone look, its own character.
So and that doesn't have a voice.
So that's a good example of a great movie car.
And that's, it's not one like that, you know, a car chase movie or anything. I'm like that.
So it was just a certain purpose, just it was just own character in inside a movie and a that's what that's the best thing about cars. Because you know for not for
non-car people, they can still relate to cars in movies and and like, you know, the Ghostbusters car.
You know, it doesn't do anything special but it's just it's there and everyone whoever you think of ghost, was you think so?
Do you think the car? Yeah.
If my so Milo relationship with cars is through movies because I'm such a big movie fan and and I'm not, you know, majorly knowledgeable about Cars. So, you know everything.
I know about cars comes from Fast and Furious.
When that movie came out and everyone at school, one of the super, I'm just, that's how I learned about, you know, Tunas and and turbos and stuff like that.
But that's a hero care of a movie, right?
It is, let's say the Supra, yep. The the charger, the
Ghostbusters car, you know, their hero cars of the movies.
So every move he's got a hero car, I guess, definitely.
I'm like, well, with the first person Furious me.
You could say that. Be a few, but to me, the
ultimate car was the Supra. What was was Brian super in
that? And, you know, it's, it's, it's
today. Still the class like people love
supers all over. Just not just for the to Jay-Z,
but just because, people don't know what a super was until I movie, you know, so and that's what, that's what movie Cars can't can do, they can, they can create a Persona, they can create, you know, a sense of a sense of attraction to the movie. That's the other thing as much
as movies like Fast and Furious were Created like based on a style, they also invented their own style.
So after that movie, you know, everyone bought a super everyone bought her Civic company on zoning.
Yeah, and everyone bought Arrow, so the movie while based on reality, also, art influences reality in rally influence that.
So, yeah, they're important. Important pieces of Of car
history. They are.
All right. Well, let's go through a bit of
a list. I do, I'm gonna open the list
down here. Obviously, we've just talked
about the Supra, the original Mini from The Original Italian Job classic story in itself. Like, yeah.
You think Italian job? You think of you, think of those
Mini Cooper? S has?
You know, you think how cool they were?
As soon as you watch their movie you want to go out and buy one.
Yeah. Especially the new one.
I mean, that's that's just me. Ya Goin.
Where you watch that movie go? I want a mini when I want to
supercharge me straight out. It's, it's, it's Like selling
the car. It's selling the movie selling
the car. Every time you think about like
you know like crap. I Gotta Buy gonna buy one of
these things. I was always fond of mr.
Bean's, mini. Yes, when.
And, you know, when it's fine and when it got crushed by a tank, it was heartbreaking. Literally the saddest moment in
children's television history and that he got the lock and you open them? Yeah, he like takes the lock
and, and keeps it in, you know, with all these other memorabilia as like a Lick of memories, those homes, that was super sad, but again, again, that's everyone loves a mini because of that, like it's hard not to love a mini to Grant's Reno's from one, obviously the movie Gran Torino.
But the the better-known one I'd say would be from Starsky and Hutch. Forgot about that.
Yeah, that's a cool car especially since, you know, we've got the TV show and the movie.
Yeah, it's You know two generations kind of fell in love with that car. Yep, it's a cool-looking car.
It is equal to K. When they ruin at the end, the
jump into the sea. You see the chassis video?
Old-school Starsky and Hutch comes out.
That's mad. That's pretty cool.
Yeah, it's awesome. What's a movie Cars?
We were saying like cars in TV. Anyway, old Stevie Cinema
anything but that's a classic, and a lot of people can relate to start again. Touch through that car though.
I could think that car the Gran Torino like yeah, that's yeah.
And that's what this would be is mugello.
Obviously, we're talking about Bullitt Mustang or talked about that before. Like, you know, from the
obviously stimulus, Steve McQueen's most famous movies, bullet year different, just the car.
Chase was just epic in it. But I'm going to CT S as you
referred to before Adam do to Eleanor Eleanor.
That's correct. You like Eleanor was also
different in the first going to see S.
I like the I like the original Eleanor more.
Yeah, you know, honesty there s allinol in the new movie.
It's over height. It's not, it's a nice car.
Then get me wrong, but it's not great.
It's probably making a lot of people angry, but, you know, it's, you know, do you agree with Adam sent another text slide over for double seven? Number 79, 89.
Let us know what you think. Well, that's it for my list.
What about you? What about anything from you
guys? Probably from one of my favorite
movies, man, Max to the police interceptor since the last of the V8s. I mean, that's like creates its
own Legend around itself. I mean it's from the first movie
as well, but in the second movie it's got all these like modifications like do-it-yourself modifications like gas tank and booby traps and all this cool really cool stuff becomes badass, man. Yeah, and it's just like, it's,
it's own world in itself, like a creates its own history and its own mythology. So, I mean, that's, you know,
one of my favorite and so cool. Not from such a great movie,
couldn't agree more like the, the hole?
Max, um, yeah, yeah. The, the movies form is just
like Evel as I said, like with the minis and that everyone thinks about yeah the car that's the first thing.
I think about your cousin's, much as part of it as anything else. Yeah.
That's also the ones you miss as well.
Yeah. But in 60 seconds again, that's
probably which probably killing a bit too much but that movie there, they still Ferraris from a warehouse and in the background is an F40. My favorite car, they don't
steal it, they don't steal it every other Ferrari, although mention that in the movie or they don't mention it, you just see it sitting there in the background right near the door.
Maybe that's over there. Keeping it for the sequel that
maybe they're leaving that 1 in 70 seconds.
Again, favorite cars looked or speaking with them James from established last week about about 40 came up was first car.
I said you know it's one of those cars that just everyone unanimously loves ultimate Supercar but yeah I do remember that scene and going out to you s and I'm just like Why take the other words, you take the best one, it's pointless.
What else, what else, what else can you guys?
Any any cars? Meticulous.
One car like, just clicked into my mind.
Was bad, boys. One?
Yeah, the Porsche believe that's a turbo so that is a pretty cool car. It's nothing fancy, but it's a
pretty cool car. I mean, maybe that movie, so I
would it, but it's looks cool though.
It's looks sounds goes pretty. They go very well.
That yet, that's another classic that, that's, that's an awesome kind of like as last of the air-cooled ones, which is even better. Probably haven't seen this one,
but I know James has Motorway. The S15 in it, the, the Sylvia.
Yeah. That Motorway.
A just to interject. Motorway is a really good movie
that not a little people. I've seen.
It's a Hong Kong car, chase movie that I recommend.
It's got really good. Really good?
Cinematography really well. Shot car chases.
Yeah. We're going down that path.
What about the Torino? Yeah.
Dear from you know initially that's that's that's stay 86 is spot-on. Like I've that's the should be
the first of all this. I completely forgot about that
one but um yeah, that the area the AE86, like, to be honest with you. It's, it's nothing special.
No, but it's a sushi delivery. It's a delivery, but it's one of
those strange things. That's beautiful, because it's
ugly. Yeah, I don't know how to
explain that. Yeah, no.
I could not agree with you more. It's not look, it's a great car
in its own right, but it's, it's also a car that, you know, it wasn't anything special, but the reason why people love it, is the underdog, it was the underdog hero.
It was, it was baiting gdrs. Has been an RX-7 still went
sideways. They had.
I want to say, I don't want starts, always easy.
That's what kind of JDM cultures about as well.
It's like taking a regular ordinary hatchback or family car and turning into a drift machine.
Yeah. And that was the best part of
that initially because, you know, It was just like this like 80s crap box was being everything and they just like, what the hell, but that's what made that cost so special as well. And also, the also came with a
pretty famous engine that the for a GE which we know is pretty treatable and came in and come in a wide, variety of cars and different different tunes and like different they had different heads on them like those are 20 valve later on.
But yeah. 86, that that was a good pick up.
Adam glad you put that one up. Anything else we got guys will
think we've covered all the listeners with me and we could go on forever and ever. I mean DeLorean.
Yep. Oh yeah.
That's a huge one of the big ones, and I think similarly to man Max, when the to Lauren goes from the first movie to the second movie to the third movie, it changes each time, you know, they just configuration to adapt in here, but like, doc doc adds different things. So I can the second movie adds
the trash, the committee, Eugenie.
A mr. Fusion.
That's right. And then in the in the third
movie that had like all these old like steampunk kind of bits and pieces to get it running, and it just, you know, creates its own history and it looks so cool.
Each each iteration, it gets another another car from the movies, the Hilux. Oh, yeah.
That's really cool. And that did it again.
That was almost a hero. Are in that movie as well
because they did have it up on that Podium.
It was something he could win. And, you know, Mighty dreamed
about it the whole time and then he got it and right at the end that was the last car you sort of see before the glory.
And well, was that before or after the glory and write it down. Like, take off that.
That was like, the last bit. That is the last iteration of
that inventory and the train comes.
But yeah, he's driving the stylus.
Yeah. Before after it gets destroyed.
Yeah, yeah. Now that's a good pick up our
complete, completely forgot about that.
Um well, we'll move on because we could we could we could be fucking with me because fake hours, and let's be honest, we've only got half an hour to go but hot hatchbacks.
Meow these are these are my favorite genre of cards one because they're practical to because they said they're simple car, but they can do everything and they can the fast they're agile. You can pack your luggage and
whatever you need in there and they just they just fun to drive like yeah, like doing wrong thousand words.
Now super is this Daniela? Yeah, you know, they build crazy
numbers, but on a practical level on a passage that again, losing my voice practicality level, hot hatchback is pretty hard to be. I've got a hunch Adams, will
hat. Jason, got a hot hatch.
I have a hatchet, he's got a hat - the heart.
Yeah, it's a fair call but the reason why I bought a hunched over like all the boys by The Commodores and Falcons back in the day. Would, you know, like especially
high school was just because they're more fun and like, The cheaper to run and you know, they practical, your first car wasn't a hot hatch. I mean, once this guy wasn't
even a hatch, was it? Or you can?
Yeah. It was a bleep bad.
If that was a bad deal. If back lift back laser.
Yeah. But still like they kind of
classify them as a hatch. You stayed true to the laser.
I have like, you know, I've currently got an SR-22, which is it is not a super hot, it's more of a warm hatch but, um, you know, it was, it was like Ford's last Venture for the laser, which to be honest with you, the laser was a great car, it's pretty cool. Like, And you say, oh, it's a
mild. It's not, it's warm, it's not
hot but during the commercial I do love.
It was a seriously hot. They said I was.
Yeah and it had all the sprinklers going up onto the car park that it made it out to be a hot hatch and it look you know and at the end of the day, applied the facade, pretty well.
Yeah, it's still a great car. It's fun to drive.
It's relatively quick, it's something super special, but put on a super specialized is we're going to be talking about, you know, it's I'm sorry. This one takes 3, turbo
all-wheel drive. Even the standard taste sweeter
with the front wheel drive us to the creek, are, but the Drive made him something really special and you could look the dips on the hatchbacks as well. Um, yeah, I'm pretty sure you
could do that. And then you could rise as
raising all of this tension, which is all the trials on the earlier when the KE. But classic are awesome.
Awesome, hot hatchback. You've got obviously the SR.
I like it. Like said nothing special but
like there was a turbo model which came with two later.
There had. I think I can turn forty seven.
Kilowatts. Something like that.
More than he got to have 110. It still goes.
Good still goes good. Yeah.
Yeah, it's not bad for a little car, man, but it's practical.
Yes, and no, like it's two doors.
So two doors, not that much access into the back.
So if you have the Chuck stuff in the backseat, it's not that practical. But it does have a decent boot.
So fold the seats down. Fold the seats down pretty big
then that's it. We got a text actually from
Luca. He says HSV Astra accessible.
Tell me you bastards yajes SV Astro.
Yeah, there are a pretty cool. They are pretty punchy.
They look different to the old. Then again, there are only
released in the h-shape, the other ones RTS orgy, whatever you want to call it and the version above that is the H or the aah, which is, I think 05 onwards, 06 onwards.
Because it was looking for wasn't they'll switch though their minds like, a crossover between the new version of the old version. So, but yeah, it started about
45, the HSV Astra was, it was something special, you know, HSV never went to forth for pots. So yeah, four cylinders so is
pretty cool. Pretty good Venture.
But didn't last too long, then Opals come about and they've adapt. They've actually released it as
the Opel vxr OPEC OPEC, pretty cool.
Yeah, pretty cool little car. Just the, the dash is a little
bit busy. That's what that's what annoys
me about that car, but it's still got a lot of power, 20 inch rims. It's pretty cool.
They fly man that they absolutely go good.
But like on the top of your like dashboards.
I'll most of the modern hot hatches just got crap everywhere. So what is this?
Like the footnote, not the fiercest simple.
But the Focus ST is just got a bazillion buttons in the center stack and it's just like fixed in the new model.
That's the biggest series train as well, but if you want to talk about funny stuff, funny Electronics, what was it?
The Citroen or one of the cars you could adjust the volume of the stereo? Like it would make different
sounds like oh, yeah, the Clio RS.
The lace clear. I see you can you can make it
sound like a GTR. Make it sound like oh you know,
and I ran Alpine of just in case you couldn't afford the GTI.
You know, you got to run over to make the same sound.
Exactly. Exactly, right.
There's a cool feature but at the same time, it's a bit.
It's got a bit of a way from what a hot hatches.
Yeah, no. And I choose is of a surprise to
be very simple but practical and just you know, and just work and and and that's why I think Ford I'm not getting on Ford's bandwagon here but Ford's stuck with the hot hatchbacks for a long time and they've gotten it right.
Like we're talking you know for the for the price you're on you're on the right path therefore the price Ford's got it right spot on but you can't go past the round up my gums.
They're powerful they are very good.
I think. Iris, or something on those
lines. 375 and look like they've been nuts.
They are not like I still hold the record of the nurse at the Nurburgring. Well they might have been taken
over by the latest Civic Type R, the turbo one but back on back and forth. You know so we set about the
tasty turbo which is really just a familiar all drive, you know, for in the Mazda 2 thing. But we're talking proper Ford.
Escort RS, Cosworth, which was based on the Sierra chassis but now gained all-wheel drive rally Legend.
Yeah. Not that Cosworth engine really
made that car come alive and all-time favorite car in a Need for Speed I believe it is his don't even Jeremy Clarkson had two of them as well you know that they just ship that just proves how good that how could that car was?
It's a it's a blue collar here. I think they call that card not
cheap to buy anymore like they weren't cheap when they were when they were new actually but um on to how to very hard to find like that they weren't they weren't released here but there's a few around that we did.
Say one in person at small forward that they're not a big car. Very small, very small like
those pockets and like are actually.
And in regards to the laser was pretty much the same size.
Yeah. But but they are fat.
They got big guards and and they look good.
Staying with for putting my last four to the list, the Fiesta ST.
I've driven one fantastic on the road, just cracking car to drive and we'll obviously big news with the IRS coming.
I saw one. Yeah, so, um, yeah, so when the
other day Tell Marine living through and there's a second time was for the same car. Black.
Iris like RS. Nice car.
It looks really nice. Yeah.
So I drove past it one time on nickel and road, but then another time until Marina was turning and the guy didn't boot it, but it still look. Good Chuckles still look good at
sitting here but it looks good, it looks good.
Yeah, I saw one getting the little sore and wanting nitrous blue getting delivered to a dealership in Epping.
I think that's a, the hero color that kind.
It is the hero car gotta look good.
Like I've seen the pictures. Yeah.
And but when you see it in person, It just it's got the black accents after that color, black rims.
Black inserts looks really good. Definitely also can look at in
you is going to go to a break, but we're gonna, we're gonna text my text line before we go to the break.
We'll read that out. Yeah, someone texted in Forza
sh1t boxes. So so thanks for that.
And then Callum sends us messaging.
Hey, Ian Callum, no. Love for the Batmobile.
Oh, we forgot about mobiles, all of them.
We forget them. I mean, we've gotten a lot of
cars, but personally, Michael Keaton is Batmobile from the 1989 movie, definitely, that was really cool.
I mean, the, the Christian Bale Batmobile the tumbler.
Yeah, that's a really cool car, but it's basically like a tank.
But the mark Eaton ones like a Sleek sort of missile on on Wheels. It's really cool.
Yeah, that's awesome. They just look at because well
so I guess that's the whole Batman thing, just a little crazy. And look, we drop back in a hot
hatches before we go to our quiz.
Adams got a lot of, got a few more he wanted to wanted to talk about. Yeah, my my first car.
Well, what I wanted, as my first car should say was a 30 60 cycles per ge3. 06 GT I-66 speed through L, very good, little
car, such a small car, but the thing I think it had 100 and 130 something keloid out of a little too late.
Yeah French car. It's insane.
They look, they went good and that's considering its that car was released in the 90s. Yeah.
Mid to late 90s. It's a lot of power from them
car and to be with the hot hatches, we had in Oz at the time. That'll be the hottest thing we
had. Yeah.
I think that was a, the quickest little thing but I mean that was there to rival. The the texture is that the time
but the textures didn't last that long.
So yeah, well, well, and I'm pozos original 205 GTI 1.9.
Yeah, because I came in one point six and one .9, they're
classified as one of the probably, the greatest hot hatch right up there with next to the original Golf GTI.
And speaking of hot ashes, we are going to get the golf swing, your GD eyes, and the eyes, and the R32 zero lot about those cars though. That's a problem.
There's a lot of them around. They did something very
affordable tons of around and you know we like things are different here on cardstock. So so so so saying those old
arm, those are Persia's and now they're, you know, they're pretty cool but something that's not something that's this continued actually The Spotify is the roller coaster cross rivers. Yes.
And that, that had the car that had an awesome engine.
I had actually had a lift system so similar to veto as a Sleek engine has the. So as far as a 1.8, they were
good at 141 kilowatts or something.
They were absolute animals back in a day and the very famous engine that one as well. The cars work it out pretty good
leather sunroof. I think they came pretty well
kidded, so I don't think they'll cheap, maybe it's Yoda, but I mean, they still hold their value to today, but they'll pretty cool cars. Reliable as hell.
It's a tornado at night. They just don't go wrong to it.
Is there cracking little cars once?
What do you want forgotten about the old style at turbo?
The the glands are. Yes, yes, they're cool.
Little car little cars and they're very small guy arthritis. Well, cars.
What about a secret Cordoba. Oh yeah, I don't see many of
them around. I'll teach that one.
Yeah, yeah. But yeah.
What about the Lancia? Delta integrale a I have no clue
about them. That there were at the same time
as the escort RS, Cosworth real cool car.
Basically that got Lance, you're over the line, test to still hold them the main. I think the most rarely
constructed and titles of any of any man or any car maker.
Really, really cool. It's a box on Wheels, but it's
a, it's, it's ugly, but it's lovable at the same time.
It's hard to decide not to love those.
Um, yeah, what about a Civic type-r?
Especially the for me, the ek9, the ek9, the early ones that have their first one. They make surprising amounts of
power outage because small little engines.
Make the Beast, the Beast 16, though it was 1.6, liter 130 136
kilowatts man. They, I think they River.
That's what 10 grand and a sixteen hundred.
Cc's is just it's insane. Little whipper snipper really
though, they are but they go good.
They way nothing because they're all stripped out and they that they were they went Really good cause we're forgetting a really important. Hot hatch.
All right. Tell us Stacey Ascender Dacia
said, Dara important of hot hatches.
And where's that from? Somewhere babia Romania.
Huh? The daisy said there is James.
Mays favorite car. Good news.
Everybody classed as a supermini.
See for me. I didn't know that that's the
thing, but apparently that's what it's called.
What engine does that supermini over there?
Have the let me Okay, with a few like have 1600, they came.
Yeah, I think that like a 1.1 litre, as well like this one
theater. I believe, autobianchi.
