where me and you went to the O2 arena at the start of last season.
And Estaban was on.
And in that chat we had Estaban and Lance.
And then later on in the season, it's been lovely.
We've found lots of new viewers and listeners this season.
I started seeing a bit of a trend in the DMs on the comments.
I said, oh, you guys should get Estaban on.
And it's like, well, we have.
And then we got him on later in the season.
But on which you were about to hear some chaos in shoe with my dad's dog.
But we'll get to that.
But this chat, our first chat from F175,
it was my first time... I'd interviewed him briefly before,
but it was my first time sitting down talking to him
for like a long period of time.
And he was just so warm and so lovely and so friendly.
And I think this move to Hass this season,
like, it all went a bit Pete Tong at Alpine.
Like, there was a...
Never got on Brilliant with Pierre.
The team sort of felt like they backed Pierre
over Estaban, needed a divorce there.
And it just feels like this Hass season
has reinvigorated Estaban's love of F1 from himself.

In the motorhomes, when they take the European races, yeah.
Yeah, I forgot my words then.
We were having a little tour around his room in the motorhome.
And he has...
This is the Alpine days, we should say.
This is... Yeah, sorry.
This was back when he was driving for Alpine.
And on his wall, he had stuck little letters from fans.
And we were just there in his bedroom, like,
oh my God, that is so cute that he's keeping these letters
and he stuck them to his wall.
And I don't think many... I don't think many drivers would do that.
And ever since I saw that, I thought, I like this guy.
I want to say something here.
And I'm going to break some hearts.
You know, when people give stuff to drivers when they're at F1,
I see it all the time of like, here's a friendship bracelet,
here's a picture, here's a letter.
The press officer takes it and the driver never looks at it
or briefly glances at it and they never see them again.
Sorry to break the illusion, guys.
But that sport, not Estaban.
Not Estaban?
Not Estaban.
He takes them.
He looks at them and he puts them up in his motorhome
as a genuine thing, which I was just blowing away at.
And a good season for Estaban.
He was narrowly beaten in the championship by Ollie.
We're going to talk about it in a second.
But I think he reminded some people of what he could do.
And him and Ollie had some good points for House this year.
So a great season for Estaban Ocon.
And a first season for Mr. Ollie Bearman.
Who is delightful?
And I feel like with these Gold episodes,
we're all just saying they're delightful.
But they are.
Like, we wouldn't have them on the podcast if we didn't like them.

If we interviewed a driver who didn't like them.

And he's driving me up the wall.
So I went for a little walk.
I went to the loo.
I was going to go and see someone else.

And not this bit I've not.

So I come out the loo.
And I see this lad wearing this Mickey Mouse hoodie.
Mickey Mouse F1 hoodie.
And the...
I was like, oh, that's cool.
Because they've just announced this Disney thing.
I then walked to the back of the plane
to speak to somebody I know on the plane.
Get to the back.
And this lad in this hoodie
comes to the back and starts talking to me.
And we'd made eye contact and said hello
when I passed in the corridor when I'd come out the loo.
I only realised when I got to the back of the plane
it was Ollie Bearman.
And I'm that tired that I'd noticed the hoodie
over the fact it's Ollie Bearman.
He'd been...
Because obviously he's travelling in first class
and I'm very much not.
He's been sent to the back of the plane where we are
because he's been talking to the staff on the plane.
Turns out Ollie Bearman's a massive plane geek.
Loves a plane.
So he'd been sent to the back of the plane
to go and get a tour of the top bit of the...
You know where the crew go and sleep?
Yeah, yeah.
So I've gone to the back.
Ollie turns up and I went, oh, hey.
And the staff were like showing Ollie.
And they were like, Christian, go up and have a look as well
to which Ollie went, no, don't send him up.
I don't know this guy.
I was like, yes, thank you, hilarious.
Went up and he was just looking at me going,
isn't this amazing?
And I find myself being shown around the
staff cabin bunk bed thing of a plane
with an F1 driver banging on about how incredible it is.
I was like, Ollie, do you know what you do for a living
and you're awe-inspired by a bunk bed
at the back of a plane?
This is incredible.
So yeah, next time he's on,
Ollie Bearman's secret plane geek did not know this.
Loves a plane.
Also had a really good first season in Formula One,
amazing, rookie season, done brilliantly.
Probably going to drive a Ferrari in the future
if he carries on like this.
But the headline of the season for me,
Loves a plane.
But we also know that he loves Taylor Swift.
We also know that he loves breaking rules
and he's admitted to breaking rules.
We've had him arrested on stage at Silverstone.
We've spoken to his dad as well at Silverstone.

who's also moved teams.
And I realized something as we were talking,
but I don't think I could ever move teams
if I raced for a particular team
because I'm awful at remembering names.
And the way I tend to go about it is everybody
is going with what they're wearing,
but everybody wears the same clothes.
How are you finding remembering names?
Is that a strength of yours when you've moved
into new surroundings?
It's not an easy thing, you know.
And especially when you have to remember, you know,
more or less, it's 100 people on site,
you know, on the race team.
So it's very difficult, but with time it comes.
You know, I start to get to know everyone's name now
around, you know, my side of the garage,
which is already a good start.
But, you know, with the time I will be able to know.
But yeah, the worst thing is when you call someone
the name you thought it was the wrong name.
That's so embarrassing.
I guess a mate.

Yeah, a mate buddy.

One of my favorite things about you is
when we went to our first Silverstone as a podcast.
What, the shakedown?

We got a little tour in the, like, Alpine tree house
or whatever it's called.
And we got taken into your room, right?

You weren't there, but we were in your room.
I'm sorry.
We found all sorts.

That's why I saw some stuff missing.

Yeah, that's all right.

We saw on your wall that you'd stuck, like,
fan letters and stuff from fans.
And there were loads there, weren't there?
It was adorable.
Have you take, do you take them with you?

Yeah, it's always, I end up with having an extra suitcase
by mid-season, you know.
The team hates me for that, normally.
I think that will not change again.
But, yeah, I basically collect all the fan letters,
the fan gifts, and I keep them, you know.
I bring them back to my place.
And, you know, it's something that's been made with love
and is very important, you know, to me.
And, yeah, I would, you know, be an awful person
if I was just throwing it away.
So, yeah, it does weigh a lot by mid-season,
I can tell you, but it's awesome.
I don't know, because F1's such a unique sport in that,
like, fans, and granted, it's very few lucky ones,
but they do get to go in the paddock,
like, we're both football fans.
You don't see that with football, do you?
No.
Don't have, you know, fans going round the footballers
before a race.
So, it would be sort of, you know, easy to think
that you just get given a wristband or something
and chuck it.
But we've seen the proof of this,
that you genuinely keep all of it.
That's really sweet.
Yeah, but some of the letters and their super kind words
and a lot of support, and you know,
when you're having a difficult time
or it's not going as you want, you know,
sometimes you just read a couple, you know,
of lines and you realize that, you know,
it's important and you get supported by a lot of people.
And it definitely, you know, cheers you up
and you go again, you know, flat out.
I was going to say, it must be really nice
to look at those letters.
When you're going through a slightly difficult time,
things aren't going your way,
and then you're like, actually, this is almost bigger than me.
Like, there's so many people out there
that are supporting you.

And that's also why I wanted to, you know,

That was when you give racing drivers
who are still teenagers too much time.

I have a vague idea of what we bought,
but I can't really elaborate.

I think it was stuff to help our trainer
improve his training.

I can tell you,

because that's personal to my trainer.

that that wasn't the only occasion
that we took things out of his wallet.

Well, funnily enough, he's not my trainer anymore.
So maybe that's part of it.
He thought, I can't do all this anymore.
Now he works with Gabriel Botoletto.
So, you know,
I know his phone password
and I know exactly that he keeps his identity card.
So maybe I can pass that information
onto my lovely F1 teammate, Gabriel.

And also, I think it says a lot about you,
that none of these questions are actually about your racing,
but they all just want to get to know you as a person.
So Ethan says, hi, Ollie.
Firstly, fun fact.
I actually had breakfast at a cafe in Melbourne
sitting on the table next to you and your family
on the Monday after the Australian Grand Prix,
but he was too scared to say anything to you.
But with that in mind, he says,
what is your most memorable fan
or stranger interaction if you have one?
And if people see you outside of racing,
what should they talk to you about?
My most memorable one was in Australia,
but it was actually last year
because basically, actually, no, I have a better one.
It was in Tokyo last year.
So I was in Tokyo randomly
and I was there with my mum and my girlfriend
and it was like December
and we were just walking in Tokyo.
And basically this girl came walking up to me
and she kind of tapped me on the shoulder
and she said, are you Ollie Bannon?
And I was completely shocked
because I was in the middle of Tokyo
and I didn't expect anyone to really recognise me.
So I turned around and I took a few seconds
to understand what was happening.
She kind of repeated her question,
looking at me totally normally

It's an absolute pleasure.
We said you were coming on the podcast in the week.
We got so many questions.
I'm going to put a couple of those questions to you now.
This first one is from one of our listeners and viewers
called Izzy, that you were in a French-language
Netflix original film.
So Izzy's question is,
is there more acting on the way in your career?
But, right, we need to go back a bit.
How did this come about?
What role do you play
before we answer Izzy's question about any more acting?
Well, I don't know if it's really a role.
But to be honest, I have two scenes
in a great, actually,
Netflix movie, you know,
with some great French actors as well.
We have a good friend of mine
who's called Michel Laroque.
She's a French actress.
She's been, you know,
having so much experience in movies.
She's done so many great movies.
She's going to be playing in Emilia in Paris.
Quite soon as well.
So, you know, she basically asked me
if I wanted to do that little cameo.
It was supposed to be a cameo,
but at the end of the day,
they gave me a little bit of a bigger scene
where I had two scenes on two different locations.
And it was one on a church
and then the other one was in Barcelona.
So it's a bit weird because I play Damien
and I still, basically, the girl there.
She exited the church
and she doesn't want to get married with her husband
and I basically steal her away.
But on the track, you know, I'm Damien,
I'm not Esteban, but I'm still in an Alpine suit
because it was last year.
So, you know, it's quite funny,
the whole thing and it was great
to have little bits of experience,
see how, you know, movie works
and how it is.
I don't know if there will be more soon,
but there will be definitely more in the future.
That's what I want to do for sure.
I am staggered at how little you guys can see.
Like, when you're going on to the grids,
just explain how difficult it is.
You look at it and think it's the easiest thing in the world.
Park the car up on the grid before the start of the race.
Even that bit's difficult, right?
Yeah, it is. It is super difficult.
We can't see anything.
We don't know where the lines are,
you know, where the grid spots are.
It's super difficult.
And actually, I made my girlfriend, Flavi,
sit in my race car,
in my YouTube video
and she was amazed as well
on how she could not see anything.
She was like, you can't drive like that.
No way, you're lying to me,
you're higher than this.
And I'm like, no, that's the actual position.
Yeah, it's surprising because from outside,
you know, it looks like the helmet's quite high
and we see quite a lot of it,
but we don't see the front wing.
We see only that much of the wheel
on the top of the wheel.
So, yeah, it is part of the job
and it is one of the difficult bits of things.
And especially these new cars, you see less and less.
But yet weirdly, the halo,
you see less of than you think, right?
I don't know whether it sits in the bridge of your nose,
but I thought the halo would block the view,
but that seems okay.
No, that's not too bad.
Yeah, that's actually okay.
It's like if you put your hand like that,
but you see through, for example,
I'm in front of you now,
but I see you because, I don't know,
the eyes, they basically match up
so that you can see in front of it.
So that's okay.

except for an interview with Formula One driver
