You know, the Longwood obviously range in varying qualities
and engine sizes from 2.7 through to 3.2,
but I wanna come back to that part of it shortly.
The other thing is after driving the, having the Cayman,
I was looking at water cooled cars as well,
which led me down the path of 997 manuals.
And I don't, I've driven a couple
and I don't think I would like to,
I wouldn't buy a 997 C2.
I'd buy a C2S or a C4S, okay?
Now, I'd prefer a C2S,
I prefer the driving feel and the steering of the C2S,
but finding one that doesn't have the string of challenges
that go with 997 ownership,
or at least a well-documented history
of what's been looked at, slash replaced and maintained.
That's been.
So you're looking, so you're saying,
so you're saying dot one there, right?
You know, that's a dot one.
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
Dot one.
Yeah.
Dot two gets blurry
and that's gonna become quite apparent shortly
when I tell you where I've very come close to ending up to.
And the dot two cars,
they are held in obviously in a lot of esteem by Porsche owners
as is reflected by their market value at the moment,
which right like a well-maintained C2S,
dot two manual,
is in the same crossover point as a high kilometer,
but well-maintained 991.2
in a PD case, right?
Yeah, yeah.
So I've been in that where I've thought about that.
And you know, when you go, let's say you're buying a,
so if you're buying a well-sorted,
decent mileage 997,
and you're towards, obviously you're towards the top of the market
for that particular car because you want a good one.
Yeah.
But then when you-
Well, you know what, you can buy a cheap one,
but you're gonna end up at the same money as the good one.
Exactly.
But if you look at the good one
and then you cast your eye a little bit further up
and you start looking at these no-no-ones,
you're going from the best 997 you can get
to the worst 991 you can get.
No, that's not the case.
That's not the case here.
For what?
Yeah, yeah.
The, look at same level,
and look, I've been fortunate to drive both 991,
point ones and point twos,
and I'll be very upfront
and almost be stoned in public to come out of the state
when I actually prefer the driver of the turbocharged cars
over the naturally aspirated 991.
Oh.
Right?
It's the talk is very addictive, I would say,
it would be the best way to describe it.
And the difference in,
when I'm comparing apples with apples with the 997.2
and the 991s, the biggest difference is the 997
is a manual and the 991s are PDKs.
Okay, that's, if you go to a 991.2 manual,
that's a whole different stratosphere.
That's thrown another 50 to $60,000
into the equation and get a third pedal, right?
Yeah.
So that's where the big difference is,
but when it comes to kilometers driven
and service history, those two cars,
the crossover points very close, like within thousands.
Now, the single biggest challenge of God
is if I was to go to a water-cooled car,
is getting one that's a color.
How do you mean, like, that's not white or black or gray?
Yes.
Right now, in Australia, on car sales,
there are three cars that are not white, black or gray.
For sale, across both, 997.1, 0.2, 991.1 and 991.2.
Wow.
Across 108 cars that are currently for sale,
there are three that aren't that kind.
It's nuts.
And like I'm talking 19 out of 20 cars are actually white.
But this obsession with white 911s
in that space is just incredible.
Wow.
And as a result, you have to pay a premium for the color.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, that's shame.
So how seriously have you looked?
I've had one vehicle I had inspected.
That's pretty serious.
But it's not the car.
Oh.
I'm not happy with the interior condition of the car
for how much money it is to me.
Now, I know it's, that's the value of the car in the market
at the moment for that.
But yeah, if I'm spending that much money,
which is a lot of money to me, that's not the car for me.
Because of the wear marks and stuff like that in the car.
Yeah.
But it put things in.
That's been quite expensive.
Put things in.
Yeah, look, it's, I couldn't imagine myself getting it fixed.
Hmm.
And I'll always have to live with that compromise.
You know what I mean?
So, yeah, which brings me back to the air cooled cars.
Which are about 30% cheaper than those,
than those cars I was just talking about,
than the water cooled ones.
OK, so the air cooled in the temperatures
that you're looking at where you'd be driving.
I don't care about that.
You're OK for a short journey.
That'd be fine.
But what are you talking about?
I drove my 356 in 40 degree days for like four or five hours.
OK.
I don't understand why people are worried
about air temperature, but air cooled cars.
So I've got all these fans.
No, I just thought if you got stuck in traffic,
if you're not moving,
then you're stuck in traffic.
Those are the fans for, isn't it?
Um.
No, I don't know if it does.
I don't know.
I'm not even.
I've never remotely been concerned about this.
And I don't know.
You're not going to instill this fear in me now.
OK.
All right.
OK.
So anyway, have you had a look at it?
No, look.
No, haven't been any good ones yet.
No.
You know, and.
Oh, OK.
This I really should have bought that ultraviolet color car.
About 12 months ago when I wasn't in the financial position to do so.
That I really, I look back.
There's always one that got away.
That was the one I really looked back
and regretted that because it had all the boxes checked except one.
It was a UK car.
Mm.
It was priced.
It was priced accordingly, right?
But, you know, anyway, now, I want to talk about the air cooled engines for a second.
Mm.
But there's loads of three-letter cars over here.
And I'm sure it's probably similar over your next to the woods.
Yeah, I think so.
Yeah.
You pay a premium to go to three point two.
OK, over the three leaders.
But I'm telling you, no one wants to touch the two point sevens.
Why is that?
I don't know.
I want to say the same thing.
Look, one of the most storied and revered 9 11s ever made is two point seven
RS, isn't it?
Yep, absolutely.
Like you talk to anyone who knows anything about these cars, even people
that like more that were journals.
Henry Cashville said it was the best case ever driven on this very podcast.
You know, he's so he's 27 R S's are absolutely gold plated
when it comes to driving experience.
But when it comes to two point 79 11s, people.
A very standoffish.
Now, I know this talk about like, I think there's a magnesium case version of it.
People talk about the head bolts or something like that.
I'm sure this is the answer.
Oh, yeah, they're the shittiest.
They don't want everything you touch for those is no good.
But I think that my soul someone must have fixed all that stuff.
So I think and I think they were just potentially.
Of an age at a certain time when they weren't worth enough to fix.
So there's a lot of, you know, maintenance.
It wasn't done when it was supposed to be done or repairs done when it's
based on because the cost to do so at that time.
So I wonder I'd like to drive a nice example of a two point seven because I haven't.
Anyone's got that in the person got one out there.
Yeah, give me a little chat.
I'd love to have a spin in mine, especially if you want to get rid of it.
Even better is not white, gray or black.
That's true.
I got to say, I'm not going to buy a red car when I keep ending up with red cars.
Oh, look, I'm a I am a soft touch on a guards red 911
Yeah, I didn't want red.
If I was given the choice, I wouldn't have gone for red.
What color would you go for in a 964
If you had the choice.
Black or green.
Yeah, OK.
There's a lot of green cars get out of the moment though, isn't there?
Like every every three I see is green.
Yeah, what about a deep blue one as well?
Oh, yeah.
There's that nice blue.
What do you call these blacks?
It's like really dark navy blue that the career RS came in.
It was quite there's one in that color here in person.
It is.
Yeah, pretty stunning.
Yeah.
So so are you actively now looking then?
Yeah, for a G body or the right car.
Yeah.
So one is a road.
Yeah, but a road market.
But I think I would go for a G body.
But a road market.
But I think I want to do think I want to make a car.
I like driving the 964
Really like being out and about in it.
I sometimes feel like I'm not paying enough attention to the multitude of
dials and gauges, oil pressure, oil volume, oil temperature.
And you know, you're driving in, you just go, I should glance down and
I'm like, what's happening?
Look at everything.
But I do.
I really like it.
I like the noise, like everything about it.
I do miss my 96 a lot.
Is any updates?
What's going on?
Yes.
So I need to call Jack.
I spoke to him last week.
He was waiting to hear about a new head being delivered or secondhand one.
Yeah.
He has to get pressure tested and then that will mean it can go back together.
There's been some sort of aluminium welding where bolts have broken and stuff like that.
So he's had that done.
The staff is going to get rebuilt and the accelerator cable needs replacing
brake pipe over the top.
I want a little bit of work done on the air conditioning to make sure it's not leaking.
But I want it back as soon as possible.
But there has been a change in our.
In our garage makeup.
Okay.
Let's talk about that.
That's it.
Yeah.
So not this weekend, God, the weekend before my wife woke up and just went,
I've had enough of that Audi.
Now, you know, our Audi A3 with the 211,000 miles is a 1.6 tow of these like
anything to run.
When you use a man that was going to send it to 300.
I was totally on board with that.
And we were going to go on holiday to France and drive in it this year.
Really?
Yeah.
It's booked.
We were booked on a ferry and everything.
And she just woke up and went, I've just had enough of that car.
And I went, what, what are you going to do?
And then she went on by a golf.
She's, she's all about the golf.
She wants a golf.
She wants a golf back, doesn't she?
She does.
Yeah.
So that was on the Saturday morning.
By Sunday, she bought golf GTI.
Oh, nice.
Manual or a DSG.
DSG.
Yeah, yeah.
Nice one.
Now that was more driven by the fact that she basically went and bought the
first one she saw and it was closest to our house.
Yeah.
Did that.
Listen, you can be critical of that.
That's how you bought your 912.
That is true.
But I think that's how I find most of my guys.
The thing is, I mean, it's lovely.
It's a lovely thing.
It's kind of a silver crayon, kind of color crayon silver.
Yeah.
It's got the check seats.
And but it's one of those things where he's lovely to drive.
Goes great.
I see everything works.
She was, she was adamant that she wanted the winter pack.
She wanted heated seats.
Yeah.
I'm not blaming her.
Is it, what is it a seven, a 7.5 and eight?
What are we talking here?
7.5.
Yep.
Good.
You say same year as you.
Go far.
Yeah.
So yeah.
So same model year, but it was, sorry, it's a year newer than
our golf hours.
Okay.
And she's, so she loves it, which is great.
And then, you know, when you drive it around and you start
thinking, oh, feel me, it was a manual because our golf hours
are the SG as well.
So you've not got the flappy pedals that you can sort of ring
in.
It has got the panels, but yeah.
But anyway, it's, and it's one of those things, you know, the
buying experience, we went down, test drove it.
She went, yeah, I'm having it.
And she looked at me and said, is there anything you're worried
about?
And I didn't like, because I didn't have time to kind of sit on
the idea and think about it and all the checks to make.
I was literally like caught in headlights and I went, well, yeah,
it's gone through all the checks.
Hasn't been written off.
Hasn't had any damage.
It's got a service history.
And then we got it home.
We got dropped off and I thought I didn't check it.
Hasn't had the cam belt change.
How many cases?
Well, there's nothing.
81,000 miles.
Oh, really?
Which is kind of bog standard.
It's eight years old.
Okay.
Which is kind of bang on average.
Yeah.
And I'm not a car that new or not really bothered about miles.
If it's got service history.
Is it, what's the cam belt?
60,000, some of that?
What are you going to do?
Five years or 70,000.
Right, okay.
It's supposed to be.
So if it hasn't been done, then it's 10,000 miles and three
years overdue.
The cat is rather...
So I've got to go back to the dealership because the screen
wash is just leaking out when you pour it and it's leaking out
at the bottom.
Sure.
And one of the floor mats is missing.
Okay.
And you know when you go, you know, it was there when I
test drove it.
It was in there.
And so, phoned them and they just dropped around today, a
couple of mats and I wasn't there.
So the guys, you know, I was on the ring camera and I said,
just leave them under the car.
I went out and looked and the wrong mats.
They fit the car, but they're not for that car.
Sure.
Does that make sense?
Yeah.
They've got like a trim and then aftermarket, they're not the
original one.
Yeah.
And it's just, I just need the one.
And you know when you just go, don't ruin, don't ruin it.
The mat got taken out when they were cleaning detail in the
car and not come back in.
That's what would happen, right?
It was, that was it.
Yeah.
Cause it'd been, when we first drove it, it'd obviously been
parked there for maybe a few weeks.
Still.
Cause they haven't had it long.
I did check.
And so it had a bit, it was covered in dust and obviously a
few people had sat in it and got out when it was being
test driven.
So they said to have to be cleaned and someone's taken a mat
out and just not put it back in.
So that's really annoying.
You know, when you just go, it's the little things now, I don't
want to keep going back to the dealership to get, I've got to
pick up the mat.
Oh no, you've sent me the wrong mat.
Now I've got to get this done.
And then you go, hang on.
Now that we've bought this car and paid a significant amount
of money.
Yeah.
And then you go, well, now I've got to get the cam belt done.
That's the first thing cause I'm driving to France today in two
months.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
But I've got to, I've got to sell the Audi.
So what's that even worth 2000 pounds?
No, probably, probably 1500 pounds.
Yeah.
Okay.
On a good day.
And I mean, it's, it's for 211,000 miles.
It's in really good nick.
Everything works.
It probably needs tires.
And that's Africa's value.
Exactly.
Cause I've got to go to the tip cause you know, I use it for that to go and dump
stuff at the local dump.
So now I don't know.
I don't even know.
So I've got, I've got three weeks.
So I've added it on back onto the insurance as an extra car temporary car till the end
of the month.
So I've got to get as many journeys.
I've got to manage this on Thursday.
So I'm just going to take that.
But, but the flip on the flip side, I'm like, well, actually while we're under that return
period of the golf, I should take the golf just to see what it does, how it runs.
Cause we haven't been anywhere in it since it arrived.
It's just literally been delivered and it's just parked on the driveway.
I would suggest that your Audi might be worth more to you if you're only going to get 1500
pounds for it as a tip car and trash car.
And the reality is in another five or six years when your daughter's learning to drive,
this should be the car that she learns to drive in.
Well, yeah, there's that because, cause my wife said to me and I said, I really wanted to get to 300,000
miles.
She went, yeah, but you could still do that.
And I'm like, well, I can't cause it's just my miles.
You were never going to drive it again.
So drive it to France.
And she'll leave it at the airport and fly home.
It is that.
But I did, but I thought about, cause I don't want it on the driveway either.
Cause when my 911 comes back, that's three cars on the driveway.
And so she's, she's coming up with all sorts of ideas, but so she doesn't have to look at it even.
Yeah.
She's like, just park it somewhere in the village and just go and get it when you need to go to the tip.
Someone's going to know it's our car.
Yeah, you're right.
You're right.
That's classic.
The, um, yeah, I think.
Yeah, you're in a bit of a strike.
So you got, in fact, you might have more cars now than the yard that you bought it from.
So tell me what is going on with the 912.
Did I see some footage of you starting it up or something like that on social media?
Yeah, I did.
I've not been very good on social media or I don't know what good on social media is.
I've just not been on it.
Yeah.
Yes.
So I did fire it up and it did splatter into life quite quickly.
It didn't, I didn't have to crank it perhaps the ages.
Um, but you can tell it needs a bit of fettling the, the valve clearances need doing a little bit of adjustment on the carbs.
Um, but I am.
I literally just took it for a lot of spin up the road just to make sure the brakes weren't seized and stuff like that.
Um, it was kind of okay, but I think it just needs a longer run just to give it a bit of a clear out.
Drive it up the main chest.
And then, uh, I don't know if that's a good idea.
Uh, and, uh, I'm, um, but yeah, I've, I'm now definitely set as of like two days ago, it's going to go.
I'm going to sell it.
I'm going to, uh, advertise it.
The worst case, I'm going to put it through an auction and it's just going to go.
Okay.
Um, I need it gone.
I need my loan paid off.
That's paid for the 964
And it just be nice to have the space back in the garage.
Sure.
Now tell me, um, auction.
What do you do there?
You auction the car?
Um, well, first, uh, there's a couple of other things that I'm exploring, but I've pretty put it in the garage.
I've probably put it through the same auction I bought it through.
Okay.
Um, and I'd say values on long-term are quite soft at the moment.
I think you're Sophia.
Um, so, but you know, when I look at some of this stuff that's due for rest, full restoration that's being sold.
Um, you know, high twenties, for example.
I think mine as a running driving example that you could easily just fed a little bit and use every day, even for the summer.
I think I'd be able to get sort of a reasonable price for it, but I need, I need a certain amount.
I can't sell it and slow loads of money on the 964
Um, I'd just be better off just keeping it.
Okay.
Next year.
Which is inevitably what you're going to do.
Okay.
Got it.
Um, well, there is that.
It's just, um, it's, yeah, the garage space.
I mean, the garage is our garage is, I think I talked about this.
You can, you can board the upstairs of it and, and turn it into a full on room.
Yeah.
So you could, um, but you know, I wouldn't, I don't think I'd need any planning permission just to create a space to sit or, or my wife wants to work out.
You, that's okay.
Um, if it's anything more than I have to go through planning and stuff like that, which is, uh, more, um, involved.
So, um, if I was to do it, I don't think I would just do that, board it up and use it as a space, which would fix the problem.
Um, but, um, I think I'll do it properly.
I'll go through the planning.
Yeah.
Okay.
Get it done.
So, um, just in case.
What's the, uh, what, what are the plan?
Is any of the work being done on the 964 since you've taken delivery?
Like, you know, there's a few odds and sides you've wanted to address.
Has any of that been done yet?
Um, well, I've only done the six.
I've done the struts for the hood.
Every, every Porsche I've ever bought the struts for the hood still work.
Like the nine 12 had the missing on front and back.
So I put those in, they work.
Um, the nine and six have to change them because they were done in.
Um, and with this, it's been the same.
So the front ones I changed and I think I told you they were just a complete pig.
You can't get your hands in there.
So I've not put the pins in to lock the struts in onto the ball.
Yeah.
But they work fine.
Uh, on the back, it's, I haven't done it because you've got to take the intake off.
You've got to put a sheet down so the pins and stuff don't go down into the engine.
And you're just like, Oh my God.
So I haven't done that.
Um, I did change, um, uh, electric window switch.
Which was easy.
Just prize that out.
Um, and it was like 30 or 40 quid.
Um, and then, um, I thought the, I did use the, uh, phone holder.
Yeah.
The, is it run line?
Yeah.
I think it was a run line.
Yeah.
Cause cause you know, we talked about it was for a left-hand drive.
So it went on the other side and it's contoured to only fit that side.
So, but I did flip it over and it doesn't sit quite right, but it does the job perfectly.
Yeah.
So that's fine.
Um, I do need to, I would like, I haven't got the money to spend at the moment.
So I would like to change the stereo.
It's got like a pioneer stereo from the nineties or probably even the eighties with a front
flip software.
It's a CD player.
Um, it doesn't work very well.
The CD player works fine.
The radio doesn't work great.
And I can see a ton of wires underneath that are just a bit of a mess.
So I would like to get the blah punked, you know, I can't remember which one it is, uh,
SQ, whatever is 30 that looks and, and it looks like it's made for a 964
Yeah.
And when I've seen it in 964 it just looks so flush.
I want to get one of those tidy up the wiring, uh, just so my children can play music when
they're in there.
Um, and, uh,
And, um, those are the kind of things that I want to sort out.
I did sort out the earth cable to the battery.
Yeah, because that was preventing it charging.
Um, and also the cutoff didn't do anything because it would still kill the battery in the batteries brand new.
I bought that.
Uh, so those things need doing, but the big, big one that I haven't done, and it's probably
the one of the easier things I need to change the rear brake pads.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
They are so close to the limit.
And I know if they touch them, if the metal touches the discs, they're ruined.
Yes.
Yes.
Yeah.
You can barely see anything now.
I'm, so you can't have a sensor.
I've bought the pads.
I've bought sensors because it might have sensors, but the sensors don't cost very much.
Sure.
Um, and so I just need to whip the wheel off and do it.
It's, it's like an hour's job.
Yeah.
The consequences are not doing it quite great.
Yeah.
Exactly.
So I just need to get on with it because every time, because for a while I stopped thinking
about it and I only ever thought about it when I got in the car to go somewhere and I'll
be like, oh crap, I haven't done the pads.
Yeah.
Whereas now I've put the pads next to the rear wheel.
So when I walk in, I see it.
Um, so I just need to, I need to just need to spare maybe an hour.
I'll probably do it at the weekend.
Okay.
Let's, let's hope that's a job that has been ticked off the list before we next catch
up.
Yes, definitely.
Definitely.
And I'll hopefully have that, um, an update on a little treat that I've got hopefully,
uh, installed in the 356 by then.
I'm quite excited and looking forward to talking to you about.
Excellent.
I can't wait to hear about it.
Okay.
Then so, um, listeners, you've heard my conundrum with regards to a 9-11.
I'd like to hear your feedback.
What do you think I should do?
I'm sitting here chuckling.
I can see him, but you can't.
And, um, we'll see.
Get a 9-9 six.
That's the answer.
Oh, look, that is by far and away the, uh, most sensible option with regards to the
budget.
I can assure you of that.
However, the, uh, finding a good one with their age and because they've been at a low
value for so long now, how poorly maintained they generally are, all the ones I've seen
are less or unbind enthusiasts, in which case they're actually not good value because of
how expensive they are.
And they're getting pretty close to 9-9-7 numbers when they're in good nick.
So it's just that whole balance thing for me.
It's, I just don't see that car unless it was, unless I absolutely nicked a 9-9-6
GD3.
Ah, yes, there's that.
They were so reasonably priced three years ago.
I know, but they're gone ballistic.
Are they?
They've gone ballistic.
They've gone 50% since then.
At least 50.
At least 50.
Well, I mean, I saw a really nice yellow one for sale with like decent miles, well looked
after, I don't remember how much it was four years ago now, and it was 39-9-9-9.
What are they now?
They don't have over a hundred now, wouldn't they?
Yeah.
And you know when you go, you know, when you go, oh, I've had all the money then, but,
you know, you could say that about anything, couldn't you?
Yeah, of course you could.
And it was, but we were all looking at them going, it's inevitable that's going to happen.
They could double-tip them.

About this episode
Mark and Ajmal swap stories after a few weeks apart, then dive into back-to-back car events in Australia. Porsche’s “Sports Car Together Day” brought a mix of pristine classics and modern highlights, including a lineup of multiple 964 variants and a surprisingly taste-debatable Carrera GT with an aftermarket body kit. The next day’s Classic Cars and Coffee drew huge crowds—especially under-30 enthusiasts—plus rare oddballs like a Capri 3000 GT, E-types, and quirky French classics. They also chat about the weather and why comfortable “t-shirt” temps matter for getting out and enjoying shows.
