Let's get into the first question from this segment
P1Patreon member Frankie
Is Lando proving to everyone that he is truly championship material?
For sure
Yeah, this was the question that we've asked on this podcast
We've said
you know, when the times get tough
when there's pressure on his shoulders at this point in the season
can he deliver
and can he deliver well
and quite frankly
it was a phenomenal lap from Lando
to take pole position
when he had messed up that first lap
locked up into turn one
and he could have easily sacrificed a little bit of time
put himself on the back foot
and maybe started third or fourth tomorrow
but instead
he pulled it all together
and still was nearly 4 tenths clear of Piastri
his teammate that
you'd say that half a season ago
you'd be like, wow
that's an insane gap between the two of them
but it's becoming more normal now
Lando is delivering
so unbelievably well
I said it on the watch along
but this was a lap
and a performance that you go
yes, he is world championship ready now
I think it helps
his confidence that Max has just
you know, him and Red Bull have just disintegrated
his championship challenge has gone
so there's an element of pressure gone there
and for Oscar as well
who's scrambling around
trying to find the pace he had for most of this season
but that's
you can't take anything away from Lando
because he's clearly got
the confidence in the car
that he didn't have in that first half of the season
and he's delivering to a level now that
I mean, he's literally topped every single session
in a Brazilian Grand Prix sprint weekend
where in the sprint it was slippery
he could easily have been Piastri in that situation
careering towards the wall
he wasn't
he could have easily made a poor
qualifying performance after that first
mistaken Q3
and he didn't
and he's on pole position
so
you have to say pretty
not flawless
because we just spoke about a mistake in Q3
but very close to it
very close to it
but I think
what you mentioned about the mistaken
in Q3
maybe he has gone by and we've
I think fairly criticized Lando in the past
for the mistakes that he's made under pressure
and he himself has admitted
that he's one of these drivers
that does really struggle with the pressure
and you do wonder
in previous seasons
had
you know
Lando had that moment
where he did mess up his first lap
and because at that point
it's
insane to think that Lando was
looking like
if we'd had some kind of red flag
Lando's 10th
and Oscar Piastri is on pole position
and it's another flip of the
you know the championship
but instead
Lando just delivers
an amazing lap to put four tenths on his teammate
hooks it all up
and his confidence is just sky high at the moment
not just as he won
you know the sprint
the sprint and had like this perfect weekend so far
he also you know got pole position
and won so comfortably in Mexico last time
so he's on this amazing run now
and yeah you
it's not over but you really wouldn't
bet against Lando now like he's looking
so so comfortable and I think
something you've just mentioned
the
the pressure
of having Max Verstappen in a title fight
has got to be completely different
no disrespect to Oscar Piastri
and then having your teammate Oscar Piastri
who himself is obviously struggling quite a lot
I said to the next question about Oscar himself
P1Patreon member Flyeunz
what does Piastri need to do
if he wants to bring the challenge
to Lando?
He needs to find something desperately
any anything
I think what what is
really concerning is the gap again
between them
because
had he just slotted into P2
it gives an opportunity
for a turn one dive bomb
and when he's in the lead
it's a we know how hard it is to overtake in 2025
so even if he doesn't have the pace of Lando
he could still probably win the race
you know even if Lando is quicker
and that's a trend that we've seen a lot this year
with the two McLarens
one of them is behind and quicker
but it's not always easy to pass
when there's not a huge advantage
so he really needed to get
you know P2 on the grid
to be able to go for it
it's not the
you know you'd think
he's going to just be hoping that he can
based on Lando's pace
get through to P2
and kind of
damage limitation a bit
but
I do
you know he needs to be beating Lando very very soon
if he's going to have any opportunity
because
he's just not
he's just not at the moment is he at all
he's not fourth isn't good enough
and
we
said coming into this Brazilian Grand Prix that
a second and a second is fine
but he's crashed out of the sprint
and now he starts fourth
which yes is not absolute disaster territory
it's not starting sixteenth
like some
uh... sorry mate
I just take the opportunities when I can
yeah they're rare
really apologize
yeah they're very rare
so I missed actually the first time he's gone out in Q1
what he needs to do
I mean second place again has to be the aim
I don't think he beats Lando tomorrow
doesn't seem like it's going to be a difficult
uh... in terms of conditions wise race for Lando
he'll have to negotiate Kimi Antonelli once again
make sure Kimi doesn't do anything down the inside into turn one but
Oscar
it just again it's
he's too far away for me to have any confidence they can turn this around
quick time
it's not like we have
half a season to go and this is just crept in
it's crept in at the absolute worst time for Oscar Piastri
we've looked at his previous seasons and this this part of the calendar has never
been nice to him anyway
uh... and that trend is is continuing
uh... it really is so
what Oscar needs to do is find the pace he's not got the pace
so he needs to find it in himself
to pick himself up after the sprint
and finish second tomorrow to have any hope
that Lando might have something go wrong
or his car might have some kind of problems because
right now that's what he has to kind of almost
he needs to hope for Lando to
to mess up and at the moment it's just not looking like he's going to
no not at all
okay let's move on to the man starting in second position P1PT remember sky
Sarah
what are the chances Kimi overtakes Lando and gets his first race win
the chances are low he's on the dirty side of the grid
uh... I don't think the sprint race is particularly a good example
of a like for like just purely because it was slippery and uh...
the conditions can can vary Lando was convinced that he had the worst
spot on the grid but I'm not so sure about that he got a pretty good launch
and it did very well
the chances are low as much as we have seen moves into turn one at Brazil
it's such a short run
down there it is reasonably wide you can try around the outside or down the
inside and
and kind of go side by side for the first couple of corners in the center
S's but
realistically
it's unlikely I think Kimi showed some good pace
uh... in in the sprint but again we don't have that like for like evidence
because they were never on the same tire
they were on opposite strategies
uh... but but Kimi's been really quick this weekend and as much as you look at
the
on paper and you are Kimi Antonelli P2 that's kind of
out of position in comparison to you think George Russell would maybe be
there but he's down in sixth
but Kimi is there on pure speed he's not there through luck and he's
probably
the closest challenger to Lando
that we could hope for so as much as it feels do you kind of see what I mean
it kind of feels out of place
but it's not and Kimi has been very quick and
I think that the chances are low but they're not impossible
yeah definitely I think this
you know being a two-part question what the chances Kimi overtakes Lando
and gets his first race win if you take it as two questions I think I'm
more confident that he could
potentially overtake Lando
going into turn one I don't think it would be easy
I do think it's a long shot but we have seen people
pass
into turn one
depending you know Lando has sort of starts out a lot better now
so it's that's not going to be
as much of a problem for him
but we have seen second place take the lead more than a few times into
Lagos
but in terms of like getting his first race win
the only way I see that is if you know Lando Norris's engine goes
kaput again or something because Kimi is looking
like very very quick
but Lando just looks unstoppable so it's going to be very hard for Kimi
to win but
I mean even if he just banks like a P2 or a P3
I think you know Toto is going to be
beaming at seeing how well Kimi Antonelli has done this weekend he's been really really impressive
he certainly has
next question Craig Tilley 95
how is Kimi proving to be so good at his first time in into Lagos
so true it's it's amazing what what he's managing to do
whether it's a circuit that just suits his driving style because
if you look at Kimi Antonelli this this season the
a lot of the time you talk about Formula 2 drivers and you go oh well this is a track they know
so they'll have much more confidence
Kimi's best races have been Miami and into Lagos so far
but sprint weekend sprint both sprint weekends which again is another thing
that they say
should be in theory more difficult for the rookies because they have less time to dial in
less time to you know do their their set ups and dial into the weekend
and the fact that that Kimi has been
absolutely rapid at these two sprint weekends
and that on tracks he's never driven for is really impressive and I
don't know the answer
no it's a it's a big question mark I'm wondering whether that weird food
preservative or whatever is is a band or not I think someone said that it he is
it is not banned here so yeah so there you go there's there's the answer
look at George Russell has been a massive kind of
question mark for me really like Kimi Antonelli has been delivering
massively and and perhaps it's more just the fact of George having a pretty
poor weekend
and the Merc is actually right up there as one of the fastest cars because
we've seen it before George has had a win at Brazil and I think Mercedes have
always been reasonably competitive here in the last few years so it's I think
half of one and half a dozen the other whatever the the phrase is but I just
feel as though yeah George is having a lackluster weekend and Kimi is really
just proving that that he's able to just hit the ground running with a
sprint weekend it's Mercedes are very similar to Ferrari where they just
don't really know what's going on and neither do the fans as to why
they're sometimes pretty quick there was the cold conditions usually work well
in their favor but it's mad to think George was on on mediums in that on that
last Q3 lap trying to desperately find some kind of pace but but well done to
Kimi finally well not finally but finally in terms of the top three
Charlotte Clair just need to mention him because absolutely worth
mentioning P3 I mean where did that come from then you know sprint
quali was was a disaster for for at least for my standards and for Ferrari
standards I would say but this was yeah great like provisional pole was was fast
throughout most of qualifying it was yeah just again just a complete and
utter bizarre thing to try and understand but I guess with with sprint
weekends teams are constantly learning and don't forget as well that after
the sprint race they can change the setup they can change things to hone
it in for essentially the main 25 point part of the weekend and so perhaps
Charlotte Claire found something and that's what's happened there yeah it's
very much and also as well he was saying about it the engines in the sprint
not doing what they expected to do they were saying that there was
something around that there was losing both him and Hamilton time I know
that Hamilton's obviously out in Q2 but perhaps there was a fix that
Ferrari found there as well yeah it's strange the the form how much you know
we've had different drivers doing well obviously like we'll get on to Ali
Bearman in a bit he kind of came out of nowhere like up near the front the
Ferraris weren't there in the first qualifying session we had this this
weekend on Friday and now now they're performing it well in the close case
a lot better and it was an absolutely insane and to that to that
qualifying and you know as there was always that moment where you knew if
Lando hooked it up he'd be on pole but the fact that we were looking at you
know Leclerc, Piastri, Bearman, Antonelli it kept all like changing between them
and was incredibly close and yeah shall put in another another very good lap
to be P3 when probably you know shouldn't be there with with what
machinery's got underneath them no definitely shouldn't be there Tommy
there's there's no doubt in my mind that was a phenomenal qualifying lap from
Charlotte Claire not a fanboy and all that good stuff question for people in
picture memory crazy Casper 3-1-1-2 what happened to Ali in Q3 I think it's I'm
not even going to criticize him he was four hundredths of a second from
starting fifth on the grid less than the tenth from starting fourth so for
Ali I'm questioning the Haas strategy a little bit of sending him out first both
times in Q3 the run plan felt very much very safe it felt like just just put it
like sixth mate and we'll be really happy with that we want to score points
tomorrow don't want to risk a yellow flag don't want to risk a red flag at
the end of qualifying but at the same time I would have liked to have seen
at least one of those laps be a little bit more on the aggressive side
of the run plan but that didn't happen and I feel as though that second and
final lap that we saw from Oli was perhaps a little bit of over-driving but at the
same time his teammate Esteban Occom was 17 the fact that Oli Berman even
took it to Q3 and had us wondering whether he was going to be in the top
five was was a brilliant job from him but yeah just perhaps a little bit on
the over-driving side in that final lap you do wonder if the the
excitement of like him maybe knowing after in that first run what an amazing
kind of opportunity this is to get a really really good result it may be his
soft pole in third place after the first run exactly so like he was probably
pushing it maybe you get to start to think like oh if I could be later on
the brakes here or do this you know I've got an amazing opportunity to do
it and what the what surprises me about this is you mentioned about the run
plans and yeah they played it very safe but you can argue that you know there
are any couple of positions above tenth anyway as if it's gone all wrong so
yeah not not the right opportunity for for Haas because I think it could have
been so much better for them a little bit on Berman side as well for over
driving but we're just seeing what a special talent is now and there'll
be moments where things don't go his way of course we since the since we
recorded the sprint we've found out that he's got another penalty point which
haven't spoken about yet but with the loss and incident I don't know if you
want to go further into that but very strange that they kind of both ended
up with penalties in that situation yeah so Ollie lost the penalty points
thankfully for him so he's on 9 out of 12 at the moment Ollie got the
penalty point for the squeeze on Lawson prior to the corner in the sprint which
the stewards didn't deemed to be unfair and so gave him that but then Lawson was
then penalized for the actual corner so that was they deemed him to be at fault
because of the racing rules yeah exactly for the racing rules and they
couldn't deem whether he was fully alongside Ollie Berman from all of the
different you know the angles that they have which I found is crazy because it was
a perfectly legitimate overtake he Ollie had lost so much momentum going into that
corner of course Liam Lawson was going to go for it it just yeah it's just
these racing rules isn't it unfortunately like the way it's written they always
have to go with what the rulebook says and not common sense of like it's a
racing incident Liam Lawson had every right to go for that corner and go for
that move yeah and they've just they've just banged wheels or whatever say yeah
so Ollie Berman on nine penalty points Liam Lawson's on eight as well so worth
keeping an eye on those for the next few Grand Prix weekends but back to the
qualifying and a final few thoughts first and foremost Pierre Gasly P9 in the
Alpine and of course got a point in the sprint which we forgot to mention in
our haste of trying to get the podcast out in time so Pierre Gasly is
having an absolutely amazing weekend and I love the the sort of joke that you
told me that maybe you'd read online about the fact that he's sort of been
withholding his pace until Colopinto signed a contract and now he is just
just a ridiculous fast again yeah yeah Gasly has been absolutely amazing this
weekend so far if he manages to bag some more points you know he's in the
talk of one of the the drivers of the weekend for sure and we'll be getting
a tasty little grade in driver ratings which I'm sure you're all looking
forward to and Gasly is he's been good around here obviously got the podium
last year and we know that Alpine has struggled so much this year to get
anything and you this is the thing up and down the grid you know these
drivers are very competent drivers Gasly's won a Grand Prix and they just
hasn't had the machinery but for whatever reason is working for him this
weekend he's doing an incredible job certainly is Nico Holkenberg also made
Q3 so a shout-out to him but yeah Pierre Gasly what a what a performance so
far and then also the V-Carbs you know fifth and seventh for Hajar and
Lawson tomorrow which once again you know they kind of came out of
nowhere and stole a little bit of the thunder that Oli Berman had had had
through Q2 and beyond but yeah great from Hajar great from Lawson and the
rookies really shone in a in a weekend where you would think maybe they
wouldn't considering it's Brazil yeah indeed slightly nerdy observation that
I've just seen looking at the qualifying result is normally you get
at least some 2x2s not a single teammate pairing next to each other on the
entire grid which is quite cool there you go Tommy facts for you
enjoyed that one right that is it thank you everybody for tuning in to another
podcast another live stream it's been pretty chaotic I hope you've enjoyed
