Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the V1 Podcast with Matt and Tommy. We are here to
reflect on some Dutch Grand Prix qualifying. Now, before we get into all of that, Tommy,
of course, something that we did recently was P1 Live Show Australia announced it,
and they're selling pretty fast. That's what I've heard on the down low.
Absolutely. Yeah, if you go online, check the tickets. There's not many
seats left in certain places, so if you don't want to miss out,
make sure you grab them while you can. Exactly. Right, let's just dive into it.
It's been so long since Formula One actually occurred, and we need to discuss what we just
witnessed, because Zanvo has even on the run up to this, right? Practice. There were so many
mistakes, so many sort of mistakes we don't expect to see as well, such as your boy,
Tommy. That's what's happened. You know, having a little escapade into the gravel,
practicing for clearly starting P3 on the grid, which is what he managed to do.
But let's get a Q1 where the bottom five was Colin Pinto, Hülkenberg, Ocon, Berman, and
Stroll. What are we sort of getting from this? Hülkenberg, I'm looking at those five,
he's on a run of real stinker. It's almost like Silverstone happened, and he went,
done. I've got my trophy. I don't care anymore. I joke, obviously. I'm not saying he's given
up. He's had a great season, but it's been a slow few races, especially in qualifying,
knocked out in Q1 a lot of the time, and just generally seeming to, for whatever reason,
go much further backwards when Sauber brought upgrades to bring it right into the midfield,
it seemed. Yeah, definitely. I mean, it's very close in qualifying. We know that amongst the
kind of midfield, which is now seemingly like everyone but McLaren. But the fact is that
Sauber, yeah, they've had these moments where they've done really well. But even when
Hülkenberg got his great results, he'd qualified quite poorly then to be fair. So he's not actually
been that good. He's not been that good at quality this year, weirdly. His fifth place in
Spain, I think he was like 20th as well on the grid. So I think it's a mix of the fact that,
yeah, we just kind of, so used to seeing him at the front that it's a surprise when
we've kind of seen him at the back because we're now constantly going, oh,
Hülkenberg's had a really good year. He's really low down there. But it's kind of been a trend,
and both letter, I have to say, has been brilliant in particularly in qualifying.
And he is, well, he's cooking Hülkenberg in qualifying, it has to be said.
Cooking him, absolutely. First question, and of course, no surprises of who this is about.
Gavin Curley, 90. How many more times will Aston Martin tolerate Lance Stroll crashes?
They will tolerate it an unlimited amount of times. I think this is the first driver in history that
will literally get a free pass no matter what happens. Look, Lance Stroll had a great opportunity
this weekend. There is no doubt about this. I think Alonso will get on to him, but I feel
like a missed opportunity just in general for Aston Martin. Perhaps the conditions changing
slightly in qualifying meant that they went backwards slightly, but Lance has had a stinker
of a weekend. There's no doubt about that, but it's not like this is unheard of. We know that
Lance has poor weekends, we know that Lance can occasionally score some great points, but a lot
of the time, a lot of people are questioning why he's still in that team, but we know why.
We don't need to go into what his father's involvement is in Aston Martin, but that is the
free pass. I don't think there is a, if you crash, 20 of the 24 races, Lance,
you've gone. I don't think there's anything in his contract to say enough is enough.
No, I don't think there's any, I don't think there's any way he can be so bad that get rid of him,
because we've already had this conversation last year. If anything, he's actually having a decent,
particularly in the points, like decent season in terms of like points scoring.
Well, same as Alonso. I keep reminding, and I will keep reminding, and as long as it happens,
Tommy, because I remember you said at the start of the season about the championship fight
between Charlotte Claire and Lance Troll. Well, now it's a fight between the two teammates.
Indeed. But you look at where Lance is in the, was in like people's drive ratings and things.
He's not had the greatest of seasons, but last year was as bad as it got for Stroll. He was
having these kind of crashes all the time. And we were having this debate of some people were
still saying like, oh, how bad does it have to get before he's gone? And they kept him
this year. They're going to keep him until, you know, the end of time or until,
I don't think it's even until Lance decides he wants to quit. It's till Lawrence decide
he wants Lance to quit. And yeah, it is an embarrassing crash because he crashed in
in practice where a lot of people went off. So you kind of could excuse it on a difficult
track. You're finding the limit in practice. But that's all practice. You're trying to find
that limit. So then you get into qualifying and you know not to push too much that you're going to
crash. And it wasn't even the tiniest misjudgment, was it? He got his entire wheel on the grass.
We initially were like, oh, he's dipped a wheel. You watch the off board. His wheel is fully in
the grass. Yeah, yeah, that complete misjudgment. I know it's a narrow track. But of course,
let these are the best drives in the world. Can't really forgive him. You can forgive a
driver perhaps when they dip half a wheel or you know, when they're in the wet and they put
a slight wheel on the curb and it spits them out. This was this was a big error from Lance.
And and one that yeah, he could have easily been in Q3 for sure. Question from people on
Patreon. Remember, Glush, do we need to revoke Hulk's title of being a qualifying monster?
Well, look, we've reflected on it. I don't think he ever had that title.
It was more that he's been able to somehow turn disastrous qualities into great races.
We've got some conditions maybe, although it seems like it's going to be more in the morning,
isn't it, Tommy, that we get the rain tomorrow. And well, we've seen the most overtakes in history
around Zanford a couple of years ago. So anything can happen. But I think he can't
rely. This is Hulk and they can't rely on having these 20th to fifth places if he wants
to consistently score points. Like he's had, you know, two or three awesome results this
year and it's not taken anything away from him. But like, you just think of how much better he could
be doing if he was putting himself in Bortoletto's position, especially more recently when it comes
to qualifying. Yeah, Hulkenberg, you've hit the nail on the head there with Hulkenberg's
championship. It's not like he's finishing ninth and 10th every single race and he's stacking
up points after points. Like, you know, you look at someone like Alex Albans tally,
it's very he's got a lot of points this year. And that's more kind of through,
yeah, occasionally like big results, but consistency. But Hulkenberg's points have just been with these
insane moments where yeah, he's got a P5 in Spain or a podium or the first race, I think he was
like seventh or eighth wasn't he in Melbourne. So yeah, he's just basically had like four or
five races where he's just bagged loads of big points. And yeah, he can't, it's not actually
been that consistent, weirdly, in qualifying all the races. No, he's not. Let's head to Q2 then,
where the five drivers out were Antonelli, Sonoda, Bortoletto, Gasli and Albans.
Of course, you know, when you're thinking of Scalps, a Mercedes driver going out in Q2 is
not great. But then again, Antonelli has been on a run of form of being knocked out
quite early in qualifying recently. Although I think it looks worse than it is. You know,
starting 11th is not great for Antonelli. But I literally remember in the watch long going, ah,
yes, Antonelli was I think just under two tenths of a second behind George Russell,
but he got knocked out. And it was very close indeed. But he was on the wrong end of a few
milliseconds and in 11th place. So I don't think it's a disaster of a weekend for Antonelli.
George Russell's not exactly been challenging for Paul himself. But yeah, it was close to
get through. And it's, it's, I don't know if it's a building block. Is it a building block? Has he
improved? He's improved from what we've seen recently. We didn't think that was coming after the
incident in free practice that he had so early on in free practice one, in fact. But yeah,
I don't think it's a complete disaster. But perhaps he'll be kicking himself a little bit
that he was knocked out in Q2. A little bit. Yeah, it is weird to be talking about an
11th place for a Mercedes of, oh, it's not actually too bad. It is that nature of how
close everything is and, and two tenths. Unfortunately, and we've said this many
times with that second Red Bull seat, sometimes you can be the tiniest little bit off your,
your team, teammate. This was two tenths, which is a decent margin still, particularly
around a very short track. But just with that nature of how close everything is,
it tumbles you right down the order and even, even a tenth now can be the difference between
like five positions. That's just how formal one is in 2025. It really is. Alex Albon was another
driver, absolutely fuming after, after qualifying. Again, you know, we've heard it a few times,
haven't we? We've joked about Alex Albon being this slightly angrier side of him.
But I think it's because he just has full expectation now of Williams being in the
points and challenging for those top positions. And he clearly wasn't happy with a process that
happened in qualifying. I don't know if you've had any sort of information as to what exactly he was
upset about because we're recording straight after quality, but it seemed like it was very
much a prep thing that he wasn't happy with. And because he said he had no tires
in that lap. So it's a shame for Albon, because of course, signs made it through into Q3.
And it's very much been an Alex Albon season so far. And that's probably why again, he was a bit,
well, say a bit, he was rather annoyed.
Yeah, he basically what he said after qualifying was that he was frustrated by the actual timing
of his run. So he believes that a slow out lap where he was caught behind traffic meant that
he failed to make Q3. And if he just had a normal kind of out lap, he would have been fine.
He believes so is incredibly frustrating. And again, the closeness of the field means that
these tiny mistakes are being punished massively. Because we've kind of been used to seeing Albon
doing these brilliant results and actually Carla science being the one that's had
difficult qualifying sessions. But this time it was the complete opposite, really.
Certainly was bought a letter, of course, we've mentioned. But I think he'll be very
happy with 13 considering he was at risk wasn't he in Q1 from losing a spot in Q2 to his own
teammate, but Nico didn't manage to get a lap in. Surprise to see Gasly only in 14th. It felt like
that was like a Gasly Q3 inbound. It felt like that for a bit of that qualifying session,
didn't it, where he might have just thrust this Alpine into places that didn't belong,
but only 14th for him. Yeah, only 14th for Gasly. A couple of places ahead of
Colopinto. Of course, Colopinto has been under pressure still. We don't know if he's going to
keep that seat. It really does depend how his form goes. If he's only a couple of places behind
Gasly, you think maybe he'd keep it, but it is Alpine. So you never know. But
they just know where really are they Alpine. You just have the old race where Gasly can
thrust it into some brilliant points in a crazy race. And otherwise they're just
pretty much nowhere. And then finally, Yuki, I think they'll have their own little storyline,
don't they, for Q2, where I literally remember the amount of people in the watch long celebrating
that Yuki made it through out of Q1 because it was close again. P12, it's just kind of in that
meh territory, isn't it? It's not going to write any headlines, but it's also not going to
write any headlines for the wrong reasons as well. So it's a very close session once again. I
think it was what, three quarters for seconds separating a ridiculous amount of drivers.
But yeah, Yuki, obviously 12th max ending up in P3. Is that the standard we just have to be used to
now for the rest of the season? The weird Red Bull situation. I said in the live shows actually,
because we had a lot of questions about Yuki Snowdub during our live shows in the Netherlands
and saying like, do you think he'll stay? How do you think it's going to go? And
I said that, you know, the only way Yuki can lose his seat is if Hajar does something amazing.
Sure. Yeah, lo and behold, into Q3. What did you say to the one? What did you say Q1 during the
last show? I said, well, for context, I was like, yeah, because this is the thing about rookies
now and the hype's kind of gone towards Portoletto and Lawson was having a great,
doing a great job. And I think even Lawson did an amazing Q1 run where he popped it all the way
up in P5 or something. So we knew that RB had pace. But I said, you know, Lawson's back now.
Hajar's not maybe been looking as good as he has at the start of the season. And
boy did he take that person.
Popped it in P4. I absolutely love it. And of course, the whole talk about,
what if Max was in that racing ball, he would have been able to challenge them a Clarence.
I'm just, I don't know how I feel about that. Just respect Hajar for doing a good result before
you immediately jump on. You know, and this is going from a Max Verstappen fan before you just
kind of discredit Hajar for being like, Oh, well, if Max was in that car, he'd be
on pole position. You just don't know that that's the case.
So no, you really don't.

Russell Leclerc, Hamilton Lawson, Sines and Alonzo. We've mentioned very briefly about Hajar. I think
we go into a question about him at BXSSOG. Will Hajar be in the Red Bull before the end of the
season? No. No, he won't. Can we not? No, I really don't think so. I can't see it.
I can't see any realm where Red Bull make another switch. They've committed to Yuki.
That's everything that's come out of that team is that they're going to commit to Yuki.
I think that's absolutely fair enough to commit to Yuki as well. It's gone. It's done this season.
To be fair, that car, you can see it as just in the bin now because from the end of this season,
it doesn't matter. We've got a complete fresh slate into next year.
That's where maybe more question marks are of do they go for Hajar if they think that he's
got more potential? They can literally just compare the data and the telemetry. They know
how well Hajar versus Sonoda are doing, although I think Yuki's got a bit of an unfair test
with that one. I can't see it. It doesn't matter if Hajar wins the race tomorrow,
he won't be in the Red Bull this season. No. I don't think he will either. They're not going
to make that switch now. If anything for Hajar, it's probably much better that if he continues
performances like this, he can go into the new season and goes into the new season and has
a chance in that Red Bull with a regulation change, which he will hope if he does get
that promotion, isn't this nightmare second seat. That's the dream scenario for him.
He moves there and, of course, we have no idea how 2026 is going to go, but you think you're going
to be better placed being the second Red Bull driver in 2026 than you would be in 2025 because
all the evidence is already been proven in 2024 and 2025 of what it's like to be Max's
teammate in this current regulation set. Yeah, and what better time than to try and stop the second
Red Bull seat curse than to be there at the start of the regulation change where you can be like,
no, no, no, no, that front, that front is very pointy. Can we reign that back in now rather
than in two years? Okay, cool. Next question. P1 Patriot member Edith is my middle name.
What happened to Aston? Alonso looked set to take top five and then Pace fell away.
It must have been the condition surely. I know it's quite close and qualifying,
but still Alonso ended up three tenths off of Charles in sixth and I was sort of tipping him
to be in the top five and I kind of stupidly put him in third for my little social prediction.
Yeah, I think they will be very upset with Aston Martin. Alonso tenth and,
of course, Lance Stroll with the crash. And they've gone over 50 points now, Tommy, so
it doesn't really matter what they do from here. Your prediction won't come in for the whole season
about it being less than 50 points. But yeah, it genuinely looked like, especially from practice,
I know you have to take it with a pinch of salt. It looked like their upgrades from Hungary
had really taken them a step forward and perhaps they still have, but we didn't really
see it today. No, we definitely got, maybe there was a case that we maybe got a little bit
baited by what they were doing in FP1 and FP2, because you look at FP3, which is meant to be
the most representative session based on qualifying and they were down in eighth and
tenths. So Alonso, he was very good during those sessions and I think just the fact that
how quick they were FP1, FP2 and the fact that we saw how well they did in the last race,
it kind of felt like, right, Aston Martin are back. This is their chance to get a great result, but
sadly for them, they weren't really anywhere. So maybe Lance isn't too disappointed because I
think if Alonso had been up in like a third or as we kind of saw what was happening
on Friday, then that's where Aston Martin really kicked themselves even more that they'd
have only had one car in there, but just attempt the place for Alonso. So obviously Alonso,
he is the absolute extreme. He is the limit of the car, isn't he? Yeah, of course. Yeah, exactly.
He's the benchmark for sure, I know. Next question. P1 pitch, remember Anastasia W.
What happened on the last lap in Q3? Why wasn't McLaren able to improve their laps?
Lando kind of touched upon it after Quali about the wind direction. I think that was very key in
terms of lap time around here. If it's changing, if it's gusting, sometimes the conditions of the
track can get worse. And I think that was the case there. I think Oscar seemed like he got a little
bit of a toe as he came over the line to set what would have been, what was pole position,
in fact, and 12,000ths of a second between the two of them. You do wonder if that little
toe, I think he got from a racing ball, gave him pole position at the end of the day, that little
bit of advantage. But both of them lost a bit of time, I think, in the last sector. So yeah, it's
probably just wind playing a part. It wasn't like it was a massive drop-off from either of them.
I think they were both still within a tenth of their lap time, but we didn't see that step up
that we tend to see, do we, with track evolution. No, I don't know what it is about the wind
and these cars being so sensitive because, of course, in the last race at Hungary, the whole
thing flipped on its head with the tiniest bit of wind direction. But maybe, yeah, just the fact
that that just slight difference meant that the McLarens couldn't really go any quicker. They
were still very close. And maybe it's just a case with McLarens. Sorry, Tommy, it kind of is
more highlighted for the McLarens because they had two new sets of tyres to go at.
So obviously, them not improving. It's like, oh, why didn't they improve? Everyone else did,
but no one else had the pleasure of having so many sets of new tyres available.
Yeah. So you wonder what others might have done had they done their new tyres first,
potentially, if the McLarens were slower. Or maybe their bankers were so good and that car
is just so beautifully dialed in that the second lap they can push you a little bit further,
maybe take a few more risks. But you didn't really see any mistakes or anything.
It was just an incredibly close thing. And yeah, what a shootout again between the two
championship contenders. Just absolutely nothing between them.
Nothing between them. And yeah, these are the moments, aren't they, where
Piastri just edging Norris when it's looked like Lando has had the upper hand in practice,
but that just shows, right? You know, when you get to those competitive sessions,
it can still be very close. They have different run plans in practice. And as much as we want
to read into everything and be like, oh, Lando's got the advantage, he's had three out of the
last four wins. He's been fastest in practice. But it's Oscar that came through. And these are
the small finite margins that will change this championship because I think it's going
to be very difficult for Lando to beat Oscar tomorrow. But I think similarly to Hungary,
Lando will have the freedom to attack Oscar whatever way he wants. So whether that's a different
strategy, whether that's an aggressive undercut, aggressive overcut going for a literal another
pit stop, they're going to be light years ahead of everybody else that we could see a very similar
situation to Hungary or like in the past, you know, it's been Hamilton versus Verstappen in
Spain, for example, where we will get different strategies because I don't I don't
know if Lando will pass him on track. Yeah, it would be incredibly strategy. Yeah. Oh yeah,
definitely be very difficult for you needed quite a big offset but to in pace to be able to
make an overtake around here. So the McLaren's are going to be incredibly close.
It's all going to come down to the start really with with Oscar and Lando because
Lando's going to have his work cut out. Not just the fact that he's in second.
Um, because I don't think Max Verstappen exactly. I don't think Max Verstappen
the guy that practiced a dive bomb and then beached it in the in the gravel.
Exactly. So he's already practiced a very late breaking maneuver. And while I don't
think that Red Bull have a prayer of beating the McLaren's normally,
that's not to say that Verstappen won't be able to get him into turn one. And then,
you know, maybe we have a repeat of last year where Lando has too much pace for him and
gets him by later. But of course, if that happens, Oscar might be too far down the road.
Well, you've seen it already this year, haven't we? We've seen it already with Max getting involved.
Yeah. And you won't equally, you saw it in Hungary where weirdly Lando's bad start,
which dropped him behind another car, which meant that Oscar could could go off,
meant that he then had to do some completely different strategy and then yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Because you didn't have a good start.
Yeah, exactly. But it but basically like he that allowed him to take that gamble.
And if Max gets ahead of him and splits the two McLaren's,
you bet Lando is going to do some absolutely ridiculous strategy, whether he pits early
as soon as he gets a gap and tries to undercut Piastri or go really long and hope for a VSC
or something. So we could absolutely see that happening again, I think.
Yeah. And especially if, you know, seeing commentators saying that Lando has more pace,
I think it's quite close between the two of them, whether he'll be able to utilize that,
that's what they're going to be looking at overnight tonight for sure.
Question from Pior Petri member Haskay. Is Norris not being able to take his pace into
quali going to be the reason he won't win the World Drivers Championship? Bro,
lost out by 12,000s of a second. Let's just relax here for a second shall we?
Like this, this is, I know we love a knee jerk reaction. And sometimes, sometimes,
you know, these reactions are a little bit more fair. This one is not like it was so close in
qualifying. We've already spoken about many drivers that were so close to either getting
through to Q3 or, you know, they were close to their teammate, but still got knocked out,
whatever it might have been. This, I think it's more just a case of Oscar once again,
delivering and doing what he does best, which is putting in a great lap and asking the question
to Lando. And Lando wasn't able to perhaps utilize to the absolute extreme potential
that he'd maybe shown this weekend, but that's not to say that he won't be able to win the
World Championship, especially now if we are getting into a run of races now where McLaren
are going to be so clear that it is very much a head-to-head dogfight between the two of
them, where Lando, even if he starts second, can use a different strategy to try and beat Oscar.
The problem was when the Max's, the Charles were getting involved and actually
affecting either Lando or Oscar's race, usually Lando's, to be honest with you.
This will be a different complexion, I think, for the rest of the season,
because McLaren, they are so clear, and I don't see why that will change now,
considering we are heading into new regulations, we might get the odd anomaly with
change or weather or whatever. But overall, I think this is going to be the running trend.
Yeah, absolutely. It's funny with Lando because he gets his criticism and sometimes
it's fair when he's had a race like, I don't know, like Saturday where he's
crashing qualifying and he should be doing better. But he also gets some really
unfair criticism. And just because he's fastest in practice, when it's literally
a practice session, which means nothing, and then he's 0.01 off his teammate in qualifying
and suddenly like, oh, yeah, this is why he's not going to win the World Championship.
Like, I'm sorry, but I think it's really dangerous to write him off and think that,
because equally, I don't understand why it's always about like, Lando's not good enough
and not giving like, Oscar some credit as well. But in this situation, they're just
so, so, so close. It's almost a dead heat. It's literally almost a dead heat. And Lando was faster,
really. And, you know, I know it's if, but some maybes. But say tomorrow, you never know
what's going to happen. Oscar Piastro wins race Lando second, it's still very close. But
say Lando does be Oscar, then it's four out of five. And then the whole narrative flips. And
suddenly it's like, Oh, Lando's got the momentum. Lando is going to win the championship. It's
just too close to call. So I think it's crazy to sort of say that Lando can't win the World
Championship. He's not going to win it by the fact that I personally, you know, Lando has
made some mistakes this year, and has had some races where you can consider him like
bottling it. But this, like him being 0.01 off his teammates, because he was fastest in
qualifying is not a bottle, like at all. But we know what you're saying. Practice, sorry.
It's fine. We know it's not, it's not, it's not a, it's not a bottle.
It's not a bottle. No, no, for sure not. If he's three, four, five, 10 soft, then,
you know, we open that conversation up. This is, you know, it's very much, you know,
which ways the wind blowing quite literally. And so yeah, there you go. We've reflected
on qualifying. We've not really touched upon Ferrari, I guess. Do we need to? Do we,
do we need to touch upon it? I mean, to be honest with you, I'll take a sixth and seventh. The
fact that Charlotte Clair actually beat Lewis Hamilton when Hamilton looked faster than
Charlotte for a lot of qualifying, I will also take. To be honest, being under a second
behind McLaren, I will also take because it looked like it might have been one and a half
to two seconds for a lot of practice. So yeah, there's not really much to reflect on
when it comes to Ferrari, very just average. And I really don't see anything happening
in the race for them either. I think that they'll struggle to beat Hajar and Russell in the race
as well. I sound depressed, but that's because I am. Yeah, they are just nowhere, are they?
They're not even remotely in the hunt, the fact that they're behind. It looked like
Charlotte Clair might be sort of this season in kind of the last few races being the driver
that's going into that third place slot with Verstappen and Russell at every race of which
drivers it going to be that finishes third. But this weekend, that being said, it is close
with Russell and stuff, but they just don't look to have the pace to look like they could
challenge. And of course, it's an incredibly difficult track to overtake on.
Certainly is, but it also has the most overtakes in history. So which one are we going to
get tomorrow? We will have to wait and see. Thank you, everybody, for tuning into the quality
watch along if you did today. And also, we'll be live on Twitch and YouTube tomorrow. Just
want to say as well, this is not my new setup. I'm not just kind of sat on a bench
with a kind of very much bodge setup for any reason other than the fact that I didn't have my
internet router delivered to me, which is great because I was literally driving on for four hours
at different delivery offices saying, whereas my parcel, they said they don't know.
So that's why I might seem a little bit tired and also the fact I came back from Amsterdam
and everything else that's been going on, moving house, even though it doesn't look like it,
this is literally my girlfriend's house. Anyway, just wanted to say that this,
wow, Matt, you're talking about your new new setup. That's it. Some curtains in the background.
No, that's not that's not what I'm planning as much as this is a lovely home. So that's
my final thoughts. Tommy is F delivery services. What's your final thought?
And you're really hyping up the new the new background. It better be the greatest thing
we've ever seen. It's actually not even that it's not it's not ready. It's not ready like
2026 2026. I'm going to cook, but it will look better than this, I promise. So thank you,
everybody. We will see you tomorrow live on Twitch and YouTube, as I say, and we'll have
the podcast and everything else coming your way as well. And we'll see you very soon.
That's love. Bye.
Royal snail.
They weren't possibly going to work out who you're talking about. No.
