We're going to move right on in here and talk with Kevin about the Texas Nostalgia Modified Production.
Kevin, how are you doing?
How are you doing, sir?
We're doing good, we're doing really good.
How's life on the clutch?
Oh man, it's great.
You know what they say.
Driving them automatics are like eating worms.
Oh my gosh.
I'm not sure I heard it put quite like that.
They might go down smooth.
Something like that.
So anyway, so let's start with a little bit about Nostalgia Modified Production.
What are we talking about here?
Well, in our rules, mr Marz, you know it's got to be a 79 or older car, you got to leave off the clutch, you got to shift it manually.
They're all small block cars.
The guys are running anywhere from 292 cubic inch up to 331 cubic inch, leaving the start line about 10,000 RPM, crossing the other end between 10,000 and 11,000.
Wow, and you're buzzing them things.
Yes, sir.
So what kind of cars are we talking about?
Listen, you know that we can see if we come out here and watch.
Yes, sir, we have a little bit of everything.
As a matter of fact, we even got a couple of Volkswagen's.
The Volkswagen's won a couple of races already this year and they're in the points chase.
We got a Chevy 2 in our class, we got a Monza, we got a couple of Camaro's, a few Corvettes, even got a Ford in there.
A little bit of everything.
It's a mixture and you know they're all hard running cars.
The eighth mile, you know you can see anywhere from a 550 to a to a mid six run on a small block, 265 over 60 cubic inch motor is.
You know that's getting it pretty good.
Yeah, absolutely.
So you get the calculus, for the class is cubic inch by weight, correct.
That's the way the class was set up.
The way we do it because a lot of the tracks that we go to now they don't have scales or a pump to pump cubic inch.
So we run off the index and each class has an index that you claim the class that you want to run and if you run under the index then you break out.
So what has given the Volkswagen's not necessarily their advantage, but their wins this year?
Is it that index that they're running in, that they can they've learned how to get right on the index or is it the weight to engine size ratio?
I think they're cheap.
No nobody in drag racing would cheat, would they?
No, you know what they say, right, it's not cheap until you get caught.
Then when you get caught, you just keep denying it.
There you go, those guys, you know the Volkswagen's James Brickie one and Bubba Clifton, both wanted both.
Those guys are really good, they're close to their dial-ins.
But watch, really amazing the points leader, freddie Joiner.
He's got a Camaro.
If you go on our website, look at the white and purple Camaro that says maybe.
In reality, on the door he claims G-modify production as his index, which is a 689.
And every race we've been to he's run 689 to 690s, pass after pass after pass.
And the Volkswagen's are right there with him.
The Rollo brothers, matt Thomas, all those guys in our class are there with him, one 1000, two 1000 of a second on their index every pass, with no computers.
You know we don't have any grids, we don't have any downloadable program of computers on these cars, like other cars do that run in their dial-in and we're running right there, right on our dial.
So it's pretty amazing.
Well, and that's what makes what you guys do so special, because it is purely about the driver and the driver's ability to get what he needs to out of the car.
You know, it's not a matter of dialing it in and say, oh, when I let go of the button, I want to run this fast at this amount of time and the car is going to make the tune to it.
This guy has to be clean on the light as well as clean on the foot and shifting all of that at the same time.
To get clean on the time.
Right To get the right time Right.
So it's pretty much a driver's show versus a car show.
Yeah, and we run off a four-tenths pro treat too.
So if you want to like you guys to come out, hopefully you can come to our final race at XRP.
But what's amazing and what blows people's mind is we're doing the staggered start.
Our indexes are all different on a four-tenths pro treat.
That just blows people's mind because the tree don't come down.
No light to light to light.
It's a four-tenths pro treat on the staggered start.
Yeah, each lane gets their own light.
Right, and so a lot of people.
When they see that, it blows their mind.
And you know the first time out as the driver on a four-tenths pro treat, you know staggered.
It's really hard to sit there If your index is a 5.50
and you're running a 6.50
guy, you got to sit there and watch him.
You know he's out there pretty good an eighth of a mile before you even get to leave.
Yeah.
Because when the guy next to you leaves, your automatic mind goes oh, I got to go now.
I got to go.
He's getting away and you have to control that.
To wait on your light.
Right, yeah, and you know in this, if you like, if you go to bracket races and some of the races and the guys get down there and they want the throttle, you know they want, want, want.
You know when they get ahead of the guy, this is all out drag racing.
But you want in this class and you're done.
Yeah, you lose.
Yeah, don't drop by you on the big and quick it's.
You know it's balls to the wall.
You got it.
You got to run it out the back door of a pass or you'll I mean you'll get nipped out at the finish line, yeah.
Yeah, y'all are running too close together.
They are fun to watch.
They are very, very fun to watch.
So, kevin Texas Nostalgia Modified Production.
So a little history about where did that come from?
It came from, um.
We run under the um, the um, the um, the um, the um, the um, the.
We run under the umbrella of the Texas Drag Racing Association and the Nostalgia Super Stock and um, these guys, a lot of guys that run with us um the Rolo Brothers, eddie Conrad, which was a, he held the F modified record back in the 60s and 70s.
A lot of these guys were running the same cars.
They ran back then and um, we wanted to bring the class back.
You're talking about, they were running with NHRA.
That's where Eddie was holding the class, whole record holder and stuff, and so, yes, so they were with the NHRA back then.
You know, there was a IHRA and a HRA.
A HRA, um, was a big factor in that too and they ran a little bit of all of them and we wanted to bring the class back and the cars back, because the drag race and world kind of got away from the standard shift cars and what really started in grassroots of this, and that's what we're trying to do.
Right, right.
So in a joy I mean a hra they all ran different little bit of variation on the same car so that you could go around all of them, and they gradually have.
They did away with modified productions.
Really, what it comes down to, they just kind of rocked it, and yet you've got guys that are in love with that class and they want to run their cars, and so that's where you come in.
Yes, because a lot of the guys you know they kept their cars and they didn't, they didn't really want the class to be dropped.
But you know, and some of them they made them super gas cars and super cars and some of them made them super soccer and soccer and stuff, and you know a lot of them went to automatic, then away with the standard shift and we we wanted it to be like what it really used to be with the standard shift cars and that's reason, you know, in our rules you got to leave off the clutch and shift it and then the size of super stock class.
You can't use a trans break, but you know you can.
They allow automatic and big blocks in that class, right, but you guys a lot of your stuff because looking at the pictures on your Facebook page and stuff, you guys leave wheels up quite often.
Yes, sir, so you know you lay everything on the rear tire.
Right, yeah, we try to drag that back bumper.
It's a way cool and the fans like that.
And what's, what's crazy when they call it modified production to the stage in lanes and when we pull up, you know, to make our past as people.
You can watch people out of the car.
People literally run to the fence and to the stands just to hear them.
You know those high ones, small blocks, blows the mind that we're shifting at 10, 10, 5, 11,000 RPM.
Plus the fun of watching you leave wheels up.
You know that's, you know, that's always something, you know.
People who go to the drinks, people who go to the drag races, they love watching cars pull wheelies safe wheelies, but wheelies nonetheless.
Right, yeah, they, they like that, they that's what they come to see and that's what brings people and you know, in the stands they like assignment, they like the wheels up, they like the high-riven motors and in two they come down in the pits, you know, and they'll talk and visit with you and it really amazed them because you know, in the past a lot of you know drag races went to automatics and computers and stuff and to see standard shift cars, it
brings them back, you know, like in time, and that it brings the even even the younger kids like the fast and furious type cars, the rice burners and stuff, even they get, they're getting into this stuff because it's way cool to them, you know.
Well, I think that's the thing.
Like you say, you go through the pits, you can go up to a, a, a pro team, funny car, top fuel, whatever and see, you know, they're putting out 10,000 plus horsepower and they've got all this stuff going on around there.
And then, like you say, you can come over here to the modified production guys and it's a lot more to me, a lot more relatable.
You know, I can look under the hood and yeah, you got a small block Chevy under there and I understand basically what that is.
I may not understand what all you've done to it, but I understand that and I know how to shift to four speed and it's just, in this day and age, a lot of people that don't know how to do that anymore.
Yeah, Right, that's why they make automatics.
It's and it's crazy that when they ask you the horsepower and you got small blocks, you know 8900 horsepower with a 292 cubic inch motor.
That really blows your mind.
Right, and the 10,000, 8000 to 10,000 RPM.
Just you know you want one of that tight.
You just wait for it to come through the hood.
Right, yeah, the bell house comes with a floorboard, one of the other.
One of the other.
Yeah, yeah, Drop the drive.
Shaft out in the middle of things.
So so the series we're talking about.
So so the season's winding down.
You got one more race before the championship.
Yes.
So we have, which tall falls is going to be on the 16th of September, and then we go to XRP and Ferris Texas is our final points race and the points right now are really really close.
Freddie joiner is in first place, gary Rolos Second, there's about 30.
I think 32 points separates them.
And then the Volkswagen, his pissy little Volkswagen.
He's in third place, he keeps hovering around, and Matt Thomas and his 56 Corvette and Larry Rolo, the top five.
Any one of those in top five can win the championship.
And Roy Robinson, he's on the class sponsor.
He's.
He's paying the top three and points.
He's from performance draw wall.
He's put up the money for the top three.
So those guys are, you know, not only bragging rights online, but they're running for a little extra money.

Okay, so you got the one more race and you got five guys that could, or within range of being number one in the points going into the championship.
So the number one.
What are they really vying for?
What does that get them when you get to the championship race?
If they win the championship they'll get.
There's points, fund money put up and there's some other stuff that's been donated from other companies and stuff and we're trying to work it in with the tracks to where the winner will get a gold card which they will get in free to every race.
Wow, that always helps.
All they have to do is pay their entry fee but their pit admission and stuff will get in and we're trying to work it to where each race their pit pass is paid and also their entry fee will be paid with that gold card.
Oh yeah.
Oh, what a perk that is.
Yeah, so because the entry fee is $150 a race.
So if you can race the whole weekend, you know, without having to pay entry fee and to get in, that helps, you know a couple hundred dollars there.

The Modified guys were still on a little vacation because we're all a little older and and that heat kind of kind of messes with us and uh we had some other stuff.

So we went to Andy and uh, some of them are are in Alaska on a cruise or vacation or I think, I think let's, let's go with everybody's gone to Andy.
We don't need to talk about how old we're getting or anything like that.
Everybody's up there at Andy Drag Racing getting psyched up.

Yeah, they're getting psyched up and you know the um, our points leader, freddie Joyner.
He not trying to stir the pot or anything, but uh, I was speaking to him the other day and he said if they want this, they will have to come get it.
There you go, it's like anything else.

That's right it is, take it off the street and take it there.
So let's do this week in automotive history and get this here.
Got you ready, got it ready.
So, uh, and this week in 1910 was the beginning of the yellow cab company.
You know, everybody knows what a yellow cab is.
Well, it's been around since 1910.
So what's that?
113 years they've been around, yes, something like that.
So, uh, pretty cool, you know, and I'm from New York, so that's kind of where they landed.
Actually, they originated in Chicago and then ended up moving to New York in 1902.
This week Cadillac is formed.
I was going to do a Caddy thing for Jeff.
Cadillac automobile company was formed by Henry Leland.
You bet, henry Leland was a financial partner of Henry Ford.
After a failed attempt at establishing the Henry Ford company, henry Leland, uh, quickly developed into um, developed America's premier luxury car automakers, and then Henry Leland ended up leaving Cadillac and founded Lincoln.
Yep, and that's actually a picture of a V.
That's a Cadillac V.
That's a V-Series, that's a V-Series.
Okay.
So in uh 1945, the last Cadillac tank.
I'm going to argue this because I thought most of the Cadillacs through the early 60s were tanks.
Yeah, um, but Cadillac, you're welcome.
Yeah, during the uh, during the World War II, cadillac was building tanks, uh, for the uh armed forces, uh and uh.
They built their last one in 1945, shortly after Japan announced its surrender.
And the reason Cadillac was building tanks because people don't really realize that a lot of those tanks had a Cadillac engine in them, because they wanted that dependability and durability.
In 1967, amc throws a javelin into the pony car market and if you remember the pony car is, you know, 64 and a half, ford releases the Mustang with the long hood and the short deck Well, amc.
And then 67 Camaro was released by uh Chevrolet.
So in uh 67, uh, amc released the javelin, which didn't come out until 1968.
And that would help AMC shed its commuter car appearance as it jumped into the pony car market with the javelin and then followed not too shortly thereafter by the AMX, which was a two seat javelin.
In 1985, the Ugo goes on sale in the United States and you know why they called it a Ugo, right, ugo called the record, I'll wait here with the car.
In 1979, amc releases the Eagle.
Now people don't necessarily look at that as being a wowie car, but if you go back in time that was an all wheel drive vehicle.
The Eagle kind of one of the first cars with all wheel drive in the market.
And then you know, soon after, followed up by Subaru who has very much dominated the all wheel drive car market ever since.
But uh, eagle was my opinion kind of quite a bit ahead of time I'm old enough.
Yeah, I remember that.
So, that's this week in auto history.

I've got more automotive news Because I am the international correspondent.
This comes from Tokyo.
A malfunction that shut down all Toyota Motor Company plants in Japan on Tuesday happened during an update of the automakers parts ordering system to people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
Toyota, which restarted operations as Japanese assembly plants on Wednesdays and Wednesday, had seen production recovering this year.
They didn't need this.
Actually, the full day out of a domestic outage of domestic plants could be equivalent to 356 million in revenue.
Reuters calculations based on output data and financial reporting and have both of those two people disappeared yet.
I don't know.
This one comes from Kia.
Kia America is recalling more than 319,000 cars in the US because the trunk latch might become damaged, preventing the truck from being opened from the inside.
So the Jimmy.
Hoffa switch doesn't work right.
Protect your mother-in-law.
The recall covers the 2016-2017 real subcompact in the 2008 A16-18 Optima and the 17-18 Optima Hybrid and plug-in Hybrid mid-sized sedans.
Here's an interesting one.
The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat muscle car is more than 60 times likely to be stolen as the average 20 model or 22 model of the same vehicle, topping all other vehicles.
In a study released this past week by the Highway Lost Data Institute, Dodge Charger and Challenger models with large engines frequently top the group's annual list.
The rate at which the Charger SRT Hellcat is stolen is spiking.
So there you go.
