The worst part about loving cars might just be buying them and all the parts.
00:23
But on eBay, behind every car and part is a story waiting to be shared.
00:27
I read about this guy who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman that was well loved.
00:31
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans in great condition on eBay, but this one needed some
00:35
This guy buys it and rebuilds the whole thing, all with parts he found on eBay, and now that
00:39
nearly scrapped Cayman is out tearing up the track.
00:42
From Toyota's to Aston Martin's, eBay has thousands of cars and the largest online
00:46
selection of vehicle parts and accessories, eBay, things, people, love.

The car doctor is in the garage and ready to take your call.
01:41
Oh that Tom Ray, what a kidder.
01:43
So a lot to do, a lot going on this hour down around the bottom, Darryl Brockman
01:47
is going to be joining us from out from the batteries to talk about the latest in
01:49
battery technology.
01:50
But right now the phones are backed up.
01:52
Let's go over to Bobby.
01:53
I'm glad you put the B in front of your name, Bobby.
01:55
It looked like Obby from Long Island, New York, and I went, Obby.
01:59
Bobby from Long Island, New York, 04 Toyota 4Runner.
02:04
Ron, long, long, long time list, and it's really, I really appreciate that what you
02:11
Um, I just replaced my, uh, 1984 Cressida with a new to me 2004 4Runner with 60,000
02:25
It's like a brand new car.
02:27
I know I overpaid for it, but you know what, Ron, it rides like a new car.
02:34
I can check the transmission has a full size spare tire, but the previous owner
02:39
had problem with the brakes as far as a spongy pedal.
02:45
Now you're talking about while you're driving?
02:50
And is it that it's, it's not a good firm pedal almost like it needs to be bled?
02:56
And I gave it a good thorough bleeding.
02:59
First I tried, I bled the back, came out like iced tea, I suppose.
03:03
And I thought the pedal came up a little bit, but then when I did the front, no
03:08
And it's still, it seems like it got a little bit better, but I wouldn't bet on it.
03:13
You're aware there's a specific bleed procedure for this vehicle?
03:20
I'm waiting for the owner's manual from Toyota.
03:23
You want to, and you want to also be aware.
03:25
And here's a classic example of driving an older vehicle, Bobby.
03:29
I would, I would have a subscription to one of the online electronic services, all
03:33
that, a DIY, something like that.
03:36
You know, just to see, can you get more current information?
03:39
Because if you're waiting for the, a service manual from Toyota for an 04, that, that
03:44
probably stopped production 20 years ago, more than a few bulletins have come out
03:51
since that book was initially published, unless they're, unless they're continually
03:54
updating and publishing the paper print copies.
03:57
But I don't think they are, or you're waiting for an owner's manual, not a service
04:01
No, I'm waiting for a service manual.
04:06
It's not going to be anywhere near as, it's not going to be anywhere near as
04:09
comprehensive as electronic information.
04:12
You know, if, if in 2008, they came out with a bulletin related to your
04:16
particular problem, but they stopped producing that book in 2005, you'll never
04:23
So here's, here's, here's the argument.
04:26
It's nice to have, listen, the guy at Toyota told you, hey, here's the
04:31
most current copy of an 04 service manual, right?
04:35
No, what he said, he'd get me one with all the updates.
04:38
And I've been dealing with this guy out in Olaf Karns is for like, well, maybe,
04:42
maybe, maybe he does, maybe he knows something I don't know, but I can't
04:46
imagine that in 2019, if that was the last date or 2012, if that was the
04:53
last date of publication, I'd be curious to see what the publication
04:56
date is on the manual that as Toyota has aged that vehicle out, that
05:00
vehicle is 21 years old now.
05:02
I don't know, I don't know that they care, I don't know that they care so
05:07
There's, there's the argument for electronic information, neither here
05:10
You got to get the bleed procedure.
05:12
You've got to follow brief bleed procedure.
05:14
Make sure you're doing it correctly.
05:15
Number one, number two, there's a possibility this has a bad hydraulic
05:22
This has the electric vacuum pump setup, correct?
05:27
So pump the, here's a quick test.
05:28
Pump the brake pedal 40 times, 35 to 40 times.
05:31
40 times should do it, all right?
05:34
You pump it 40 times, turn the ignition switch on and you'll hear the
05:37
pump run, okay, as it builds pressure within a, within a few seconds of
05:43
coming on between five and eight seconds, that pump should sound
05:46
strained like it's building pressure, right?
05:52
Like it's under load.
05:54
And if it doesn't, then you've got to start to have a
05:56
conversation with your head.
05:57
Do you have it with yourself in your head?
05:59
Do you have a problem with that pump assembly?
06:02
Now, Ron, would you feel comfortable with changing just the motor?
06:06
No, I put the whole thing.
06:07
I do, I do the whole thing.
06:10
It's, it's, it's, it's, it's 21 years old, you know, it's a, and
06:14
not to mention, here's the case where if you can still get that
06:17
complete motor assembly from Toyota, let's say you do, let's say you
06:22
just do a motor and five years from now, the accumulator
06:25
ball fails or some other component of that, and you find
06:28
out it's not available.
06:30
And now you're chasing an aftermarket something that might
06:35
On an older vehicle, if the goal is to keep it, and since you
06:38
just got it, the goal is to keep it, you better off replacing
06:41
and using the best quality parts you can find now, it's
06:43
going to be cheaper in the long run.
06:45
Five years from now, you won't have a problem.
06:47
You're saving money for it.
06:48
I'm already so far ahead of the game that, you know,
06:50
if I had to go out and spend 1,800 hours on Toyota
06:53
factory parts to replace both of it.
06:55
I just wanted to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
06:57
You're on the right path, my friend.
07:01
Electronic lead, and then we'll go from there.
07:04
And if you need me, you know where to find me.
07:08
Arlene in Tennessee, 20 Malibu.
07:11
What's going on here, Arlene?
07:14
I had to have the transmission replaced in April,
07:16
and I did that through the dealer.
07:19
And I got a rebuilt GM transmission.
07:23
What I have a problem with is, when I go to put it in park,
07:27
if I'm on level ground, and I take my foot off the brake,
07:31
it goes right into park.
07:33
But if I'm on an incline or a decline,
07:36
and I try to park it, and I take the foot off,
07:38
it rolls before it locks into park.
07:41
More so than it did with the previous transmission?
07:45
Oh, absolutely, yes.
07:47
And you're going to tell me you went back to the dealer
07:51
and they said that's normal for the operation of the vehicle?
07:55
I went back to the dealer, and they said there was no error code,
07:59
and they couldn't duplicate it.
08:01
So they told me to go home.
08:03
Can you take a technician for a ride?
08:06
Are you allowed to do that?
08:08
No, they kept it for a day and a half
08:11
and told me the technician did drive it.
08:13
Right, but did the technician put it on an incline?
08:18
So he can't duplicate the problem when he doesn't see it.
08:22
What I need to know, is that a braking problem
08:24
or is that a transmission problem?
08:26
Sounds like a transmission problem to me.
08:28
OK, that's what I thought.
08:29
So take your index finger on your right hand.
08:33
Take your thumb and index finger on your left hand.
08:37
Put your index finger from your right hand
08:39
in between the other two.
08:42
Grip your right hand index finger moderately tight, OK?
08:47
That's basically the park pole.
08:49
Your right index finger, your right index finger
08:52
is locked between the other two fingers, right?
08:55
Now spread them apart a quarter of an inch.
09:00
See how your finger moves more?
09:03
That's the movement in the transmission.
09:05
If that gap is too large, if those parts are worn on that unit,
09:10
if it's a reman unit that was not properly assembled
09:12
or remanufactured, that measurement is off.
09:16
And now you've got too much slop such
09:18
that it's loaded against, load your right index
09:20
finger against your thumb.
09:22
You feel how hard that is to push?
09:25
If it has to roll the other way,
09:26
and it can't because it's so hard loaded in one direction,
09:29
and then finally bang, you jam it and you get it to pop,
09:33
that's the sensation you're going through.
09:36
If they don't experience that problem on an incline
09:39
just like you're describing it, because you've described it
09:41
perfectly, there's nothing wrong with your description.
09:44
There's nothing wrong with your analysis.
09:46
I think you're spot on.
09:49
But how do I get them to believe that?
09:52
Somebody's got to go for a ride with you.
09:53
Take the service manager out for coffee.
09:56
Say, hey, listen, let me ask you this.
09:58
Let me ask you this.
09:59
Here's the thing about relationships
10:01
with the repair shop, right?
10:02
Is this where you bought the car?
10:05
Is this the guys that have been servicing it up till now?
10:09
Hey, Ron, you've been taking care of my car
10:12
You put a transmission in it.
10:13
I think there's a problem.
10:13
Really, Arlene, I can't experience it.
10:15
Let's go for a ride.
10:17
I mean, that's the first words out of my mouth.
10:19
It's because I'm dealing with a dealership.
10:24
And like he told me, they have a turnover on technicians.
10:28
And I'm not dealing with the same technician
10:31
But that's not your problem.
10:33
That's not your problem, sweetheart.
10:35
And don't let them.
10:37
Yeah, it's their excuse.
10:38
Don't let them pass the buck.
10:39
Shame on them for doing that.
10:41
It's time to talk to the service manager.
10:43
Listen, I am a customer.
10:46
I have been here for five years.
10:48
I have paid it for every service you guys have recommended to me.
10:52
I have played the game your way.
10:54
Now I have a problem.
10:56
You want to know what the mark of a good repair shop is?
10:59
It's not when they can do an oil change or a tire rotation
11:02
or put brakes on the car.
11:04
It's when you've got a dedicated customer
11:07
and they've got a problem, it's up to that shop
11:10
They're obligated to solve it.
11:12
And I say this with all the zest and energy
11:15
I can for all my shops out there that listen in
11:18
and for all my customers out there that listen in,
11:20
for all the listeners out there that say,
11:21
what makes a good repair shop?
11:23
That's what makes a good repair shop.
11:25
And if the service manager doesn't give you any support,
11:28
go talk to the sales manager.
11:30
You know, I think about buying another car from you guys.
11:33
But service has kind of fallen on its face here.
11:37
I thought about doing that before.
11:39
I'm going to take it back in.
11:40
And I thought, who do I talk to?
11:43
I need to see the service manager.
11:45
It's as my late father-in-law would say.
11:47
It's time to talk to the front of the horse
11:49
because the other end's not working.
11:53
Good luck to you, sweetheart.
11:54
You let us know what happens.
11:57
I'm the front of the horse.
11:58
I'm Ron and Annie in the car doctor.
12:00
I'll be back right after this.
12:03
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience.
12:06
But on eBay, behind every car and part
12:09
is a story waiting to be shared.
12:11
Like this guy I read about who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4
12:16
on eBay, it was well-loved.
12:19
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans in great condition
12:21
on eBay, but this one needed some work.
12:25
That's just the start of the story.
12:26
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
12:30
he rebuilds the whole thing with all these parts
12:33
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels, the works,
12:39
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
12:42
was out there on the track as a full-blown race car.
12:45
You're ready to go daily driver, your next resto mod,
12:49
Hello Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
12:52
eBay has thousands of cars and is
12:54
the largest online selection of vehicle parts and accessories.
12:58
eBay, things, people love.
13:02
Have heart disease and diet and exercise
13:04
are not enough to lower bad cholesterol?
13:07
Ask your doctor if Lekvio and glycerin can help.
13:10
Prescription Lekvio is the only bad cholesterol lowering
13:13
medication that's two doses a year after two initial doses.
13:17
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction to Lekvio
13:19
or any of its ingredients.
13:21
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
13:23
including pain, redness, and rash,
13:25
joint pain, and chest cold.
13:26
Call 1-833-537-8462 or visit Lekvio.com.
13:34
Let's real quick go to Chuck and Delaware.
13:37
16 Toyota Tacoma with some noises from the back.
13:40
Chuck, welcome to the car doctor, sir.
13:43
Oh, not a whole lot.
13:45
Thank you for your call back.
13:48
And so I have a 16 Toyota Tacoma SR5.
13:54
And every once in a while, if I go to a stop,
13:57
it feels like the rear end sometimes
14:01
or the transmission like bangs or pops.
14:05
And I can physically feel it.
14:07
And it doesn't happen all the time.
14:11
If you put it in neutral when it's doing that,
14:13
does the sensation go away?
14:16
No, it's real quick.
14:17
It just pops for a second.
14:19
And then everything's fine.
14:21
OK, four-wheel drive?
14:24
It's factory tires, stock tires?
14:27
They're not stock, no.
14:30
They're not, but are they a very aggressive tire?
14:35
I've put what they recommend the one that I learned at LT.
14:40
So barring tires creating an issue or some kind
14:44
of drive line vibration and barring
14:47
that there's a problem starting to develop with the drive
14:50
shaft, I probably out of curiosity.
14:53
Let me ask this question.
14:54
How many miles around this?
14:54
Although mileage wouldn't matter to me in my mind
14:56
How many miles around this, Chuck?
15:00
Right, I'd probably pull the drive shaft down
15:03
and just feel the joints, make sure they all feel
15:05
equal in terms of they've got the right amount of wiggle
15:09
to them, nothing excessive, nothing feels worn,
15:11
nothing feels clunky.
15:13
Do we have a center support bearing on this
15:15
or is this a one-piece shaft?
15:17
Why do I think this is a center support bearing shaft?
15:19
That I do not know.
15:22
I mean, everything's OEM.
15:25
I haven't done anything to the truck since I bought it.
15:29
I was going to say I would look at the shaft.
15:32
Yeah, it's just a good time.
15:33
Listen, almost 200,000 miles on an eight-year-old vehicle.
15:35
It's a good time to just how's the drive shaft?
15:38
Is it starting to bind up in certain spots?
15:41
Is it starting to get excessive wear?
15:43
How's the center support bearing
15:44
if it's a two-piece shaft, which something in my mind
15:48
Those would be the obvious things I'd look for.
15:50
When I pull the shaft out, where the shaft goes
15:53
into the transmission, I would look at that slip coupling.
15:58
The yoke itself, does the yoke itself
16:00
looks like it has wear either on the outside, more importantly,
16:06
You ever pull a drive shaft out of a tail shaft housing?
16:11
And look at the splines, right?
16:14
Take your index finger, make a hole with your right index
16:17
finger against your thumb on your left hand,
16:19
and put your finger in the hole, right?
16:20
Round peg, round hole.
16:22
Now start to expand your, I'm
16:25
using my index finger a lot this show this week,
16:27
now start to expand that index finger, right?
16:30
It's a little sloppy.
16:31
Your finger's a little sloppy in the hole.
16:34
Is it, is the yoke bouncing around on the input,
16:37
on the output shaft of the trans?
16:39
Is it gouged, are the splines of the output shaft
16:43
of the trans starting to dig into the yoke
16:47
so that as the drive shaft, the drive shaft
16:50
has to have smooth and even balance
16:53
against the output shaft of the trans?
16:58
However you drive, I'm not picking on your driving, Chuck,
17:00
I'm just saying, however you drive, aggressive or easy
17:03
or whatever in between, at 185,000 miles,
17:07
if that output shaft has started to gouge
17:10
the splines on the inside of the drive shaft yoke,
17:14
is it catching and not releasing
17:17
and allowing a smooth transition?
17:20
I'd be curious if putting the truck in neutral
17:22
while it was happening made a difference
17:25
and just allowed the vehicle to coast under no load, right?
17:29
Right, and it doesn't happen all the time.
17:31
It's very, it's very, you and often.
17:35
It seems like it's boring cold weather.
17:37
Okay, well and there's that drive shaft yoke
17:41
sticking in under a duress condition.
17:45
Sometimes, sometimes part of a diagnosis,
17:48
and you guys hear me say this all the time,
17:49
is tell me what's good, I'll tell you what's bad.
17:51
I would be curious, all right,
17:54
and let me say it like this,
17:55
if you pull the drive shaft down,
17:57
or your mechanic takes the drive shaft out
17:59
and the u joints are good
18:00
and if there's a center support bearing and that's good
18:03
and the inside of the yoke looks okay, right?
18:07
I would probably pack a little wheel bearing grease
18:09
up against the yoke splines, all right,
18:11
or maybe a little yellow, I think I'd probably use
18:13
yellow grease, what I call yellow grease,
18:15
everybody else says white lithium, same thing.
18:17
I put a little yellow lithium on there, all right?
18:20
It doesn't hurt, it's a good slip yoke grease.
18:23
Does the problem go away in frequency?
18:25
Does it go away completely, or does it still happen?
18:27
If it still happens, you've looked at the obvious.
18:30
I just wanna make sure the drive shaft
18:32
isn't about to fall out on the 200,000 mile truck, right?
18:35
Sure, sure, yeah, me too.
18:37
You know, just the obvious stuff.
18:40
Have you ever serviced the drive line?
18:41
Have you ever done diff fluids, transfer case fluids,
18:44
those kind of things?
18:46
No, no, I need you though.
18:48
Right, yeah, you do, and I don't know
18:51
that that's gonna solve any problems
18:53
because frankly, I would have done it
18:54
every 50,000 miles up to this point, all right?
18:58
But what I would be curious is,
18:59
if you change transfer case fluid,
19:01
if you change rear diff fluid,
19:03
and you were to filter the fluid through a paint strainer,
19:06
are you going to get any kind of fragments or metal?
19:13
Yeah, that's rot-ro.
19:15
Yeah, that's rot-ro, as Astro would say, so,
19:19
but that's how I would approach it, brother, all right?
19:23
So this way, you kind of know what you're getting
19:25
and you know where you're at, but just some basics.
19:29
There's nothing that stands out.
19:32
There's no bulletins.
19:33
I thought we were gonna have a conversation.
19:35
If you said to me, hey, Ron,
19:36
I got a wine from the rear of the vehicle.
19:38
There's a bulletin from Toyota
19:39
that talks about chassis or cab insulation,
19:41
0013-18, but that's not you.
19:44
You've got something else going on.
19:46
Whether we're concerned about it at 180,000 miles,
19:50
whether it's preventable or just general age,
19:52
that's what some of this looking and servicing will tell us.
19:55
Good luck to you, Chuck.
19:56
If you need more, you know where to find me.
19:58
Hey, coming up next, Daryl Brockman.
20:00
Let's learn about batteries and the latest in technology
20:02
from the folks over at Optima Batteries.
20:04
I'm Ron Anani and the car doctor.
20:05
I'll be back with him right after this.
20:09
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience,
20:12
but on eBay, behind every car and part is a story
20:16
waiting to be shared.
20:17
Like this guy I read about,
20:19
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 on eBay.
20:25
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
20:26
in great condition on eBay,
20:28
but this one needed some work.
20:31
That's just the start of the story.
20:32
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
20:35
he rebuilds the whole thing
20:37
with all these parts he found on eBay.
20:39
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels,
20:42
the works guaranteed to fit.
20:45
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
20:48
was out there on the track as a full-blown race car.
20:51
You're ready to go daily driver, your next rest-o-mod,
20:55
Hello Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
20:59
eBay has thousands of cars
21:00
and is the largest online selection
21:02
of vehicle parts and accessories.
21:04
eBay, things, people, love.
21:08
Have heart disease and diet and exercise
21:10
are not enough to lower bad cholesterol?
21:13
Ask your doctor if Lekvio and glycerin can help.
21:16
Prescription Lekvio is the only bad cholesterol
21:18
lowering medication that's two doses a year
21:21
after two initial doses.
21:23
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction to Lekvio
21:25
or any of its ingredients.
21:27
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
21:29
including pain, redness and rash,
21:31
joint pain and chest cold.
21:33
Call 1-833-537-8462 or visit Lekvio.com.
21:41
You know, it's getting to be that time of year.
21:43
Well, actually, that time of year for batteries
21:45
is probably year-round now,
21:47
because as we've said for a long time, right,
21:49
we see more batteries fail.
21:51
I think in summer than we do in winter,
21:52
but it's always a good time to talk about batteries.
21:55
And I thought it would be appropriate.
21:57
We've reached out to Daryl Brockman.
21:58
He is product planning over at Optima Battery
22:01
and we're excited to have Daryl with us
22:03
and talk about all the new things that Optima's doing.
22:05
Daryl, welcome to the car doctor.
22:07
Thanks so much for having me, great to be here.
22:09
I need to put a battery in my car.
22:11
Let's start the simple conversation here, right?
22:15
I need to put a battery in my car.
22:16
I've got a 2020 Toyota Camry.
22:19
It's got auto start, it's an automatic,
22:22
it's got all the bells and whistles.
22:25
Help me put a battery in my car, Daryl.
22:26
What am I looking for?
22:28
I mean, usually what you would recommend
22:33
especially if you have start, stop in your vehicle.
22:35
That is much harder on the battery.
22:39
The battery is gonna be, instead of starting the battery,
22:42
once when you leave for work
22:44
and another time when you're coming back for work,
22:47
you might be starting the car 20 or 30 times.
22:50
And the AGM battery is what's gonna give you
22:52
the longest life in today's modern vehicles.
22:57
The electrical loads on vehicles
23:00
over the last 10 years has grown exponentially
23:03
and it's not expected to decrease.
23:06
And the old flooded batteries
23:07
just don't have the life
23:09
and they're not designed to meet
23:12
those kinds of much higher electrical requirements
23:15
that today's vehicles have.
23:17
Is it a safe assumption, dangerous word on family radio,
23:21
but is it a safe assumption to assume that,
23:24
well, if I've got an AGM battery,
23:25
I don't have a secondary battery for start, stop or,
23:30
you know, and I guess the other part of that question
23:33
becomes if I do have that second smaller battery,
23:36
if I'm changing my main battery,
23:38
I should change my second battery too, correct?
23:41
I mean, vehicles can have two and three batteries.
23:43
In an EV, there's the motive battery,
23:46
the one that makes the vehicle move.
23:47
There'll be a 12 volt battery
23:49
that's usually powering the cabin functions
23:52
or some, you know, some of the core functionality.
23:56
And then in an, even in an internal combustion engine
24:00
vehicle, you know, a normal vehicle,
24:04
those often have two batteries now
24:06
where they'll have the starting battery
24:07
and then they'll have a small auxiliary battery
24:10
that's providing some backup power
24:11
for some other critical systems.
24:13
Now, Optima would make a battery for my Camry, wouldn't they?
24:18
We do, we have actually, so we have our AGM line,
24:22
we have red top and yellow top AGM batteries,
24:25
that your Camry probably takes a group 35 battery.
24:28
We make that in both red and yellow top,
24:31
our red top batteries are what would be used
24:32
in a vehicle that has more typical electrical loads
24:37
where the battery is used to start the vehicle
24:40
and then the all charging system has enough power
24:43
to keep the, to maintain electrical equilibrium.
24:47
A yellow top battery, if you had a big audio system
24:49
in your car or something with exceptional electrical
24:54
demands, we'd suggest one of our yellow top batteries.
24:56
That's a dual purpose battery that has great
24:58
starting power in addition to the ability
25:02
to be cycled more deeply and have long cycle life.
25:06
So, you've got the batteries for my car, right?
25:10
But then you get into what they call power sport vehicles.
25:14
You know, like a power sport,
25:16
like why do power sport vehicles like ATVs,
25:18
snowmobiles, wave runners,
25:20
they need a specific type of battery, right?
25:23
As opposed to batteries that I might use in my Camry
25:26
or is that, can I take my Camry battery
25:27
and put it into a power sport vehicle if it fits?
25:31
Sure, and the biggest difference
25:33
between a power sports battery and an automotive battery
25:36
is that those power sports batteries are much smaller.
25:38
Optima actually introduced a line
25:41
of lithium power sports batteries about two years ago
25:45
and they have a lot of great features.
25:48
Lithium batteries, one of the advantages
25:50
is they're very lightweight.
25:51
A lot of people, you know, if you have a bike
25:54
that's, or a power sports vehicle
25:56
that's more performance oriented,
25:59
a lithium battery is much lighter
26:01
than the lead acid battery it replaces.
26:04
So the vehicle handle better.
26:06
And again, those batteries have great cycle life.
26:10
One of the features that our lithium power sports batteries
26:13
have that really people really like
26:15
is our Optima CPR function.
26:18
And that's what we call our built-in jump starter.
26:20
Basically when the battery gets,
26:22
if the battery gets discharged down to 35% state of charge,
26:25
if you leave the heated grips on on your motorcycle
26:28
or if you leave the whip lights on
26:30
on your side-by-side overnight,
26:32
once that battery gets down to 35%,
26:35
the battery automatically will go into sleep mode.
26:37
It'll shut down in that 35% that it holds in reserve.
26:42
It acts like a built-in jump starter.
26:43
You just have to press the button on the power link
26:46
that's included with the battery.
26:48
It wakes the battery up and you can start it up
26:50
and be on your way.
26:51
Wow, that's kind of cool.
26:54
Now is that part of lithium technology?
26:57
Because my other question was,
26:59
you know, you have,
26:59
and when you talk about your lithium technology,
27:02
is that hypercore lithium?
27:03
Because is, or is hypercore lithium technology
27:06
an Optima battery something specific also?
27:09
So there are a lot of different lithium chemistries
27:13
The lithium chemistry that's used in cell phones
27:15
is different than the lithium chemistry
27:17
that's commonly used in electric vehicles.
27:20
And the lithium chemistry that is used in our batteries
27:23
is different than both of those.
27:25
Optima uses a lithium-ion phosphate chemistry,
27:29
which is known for having excellent capabilities
27:31
to deliver a burst of power for starting,
27:33
but it's also widely considered the safest
27:36
and the most abuse-powering lithium chemistry.
27:39
And then even within a given chemistry type,
27:43
our hypercore technology,
27:45
for a given cell chemistry,
27:49
you can tune the performance attributes of it.
27:52
And that's where our hypercore chemistry comes in.
27:56
For example, our Q86 automotive starting,
28:00
lithium automotive starting battery,
28:02
it can crank down to minus 20 Fahrenheit.
28:05
And if you check other lithium batteries
28:06
that are on the market,
28:08
they generally recommend that they're not used,
28:11
certainly below zero Fahrenheit
28:13
and sometimes even 10 or 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
28:15
So I'm in Milwaukee
28:17
and I can even use one of those batteries here.
28:19
So you're saying, you know,
28:20
a PowerSport vehicle, an ATV, a snowmobile,
28:22
a wave runner, that's gonna,
28:24
that can take a lithium battery,
28:26
but you're also saying you have lithium technology
28:29
available for cars, for my Camry,
28:32
for my pickup truck, for my whatever.
28:35
We have a full line of lithium batteries.
28:37
We have six different PowerSports batteries,
28:40
different sizes to cover over 95%
28:43
of the PowerSports vehicles on the road.
28:45
Everything from a little 50cc scooter
28:49
up to a big V-Twin touring bike,
28:53
side-by-sides and everything in between.
28:56
We also have a couple of lithium batteries
28:58
for marine and RV applications
29:00
and we have a auto and truck lithium starting battery as well.
29:04
So if you make a Group 35 lithium battery for my Camry,
29:08
right, I'm not saying you do it, if you do.
29:10
And I wanna put it in, is it a bolt in
29:12
or do I need to do something special?
29:14
Do I have to change something
29:15
because my battery was originally AGM or lead acid
29:18
or whatever it might have been.
29:19
Is there a difference to the way it's gonna charge
29:22
So the physical size of the battery,
29:26
we don't actually make the battery,
29:28
a lithium battery for your Camry.
29:31
The lithium-automotive battery we make,
29:33
it's a H6, it's the most common size used
29:36
in vehicles in the US.
29:39
It is a direct drop-in for those,
29:42
drop-in replacement for those vehicles.
29:44
And the reason that's possible is
29:46
both lead acid batteries and lithium batteries,
29:50
the ideal charging voltage is very close to 14.4 volts.
29:54
That's also the output, the power output level
29:58
of the vehicle charging system.
30:01
So that's what enables you to be able to put
30:03
a lithium battery into a vehicle
30:05
that originally had a lead acid battery
30:08
without having to change anything
30:10
with the charging system or anything else.
30:13
And that lithium battery gives me the advantage
30:16
that I'll have more reliable starting power
30:20
in colder weather and more durability longer lasting.
30:25
And that, and because the lithium batteries,
30:30
they have a basically,
30:31
they have a battery management system.
30:32
It's basically a computer inside.
30:35
And that enables a bunch of really cool features
30:37
for our lithium-automotive battery.
30:40
I was talking about that built-in jumpstart function.
30:42
So if you go to the airport,
30:44
leave your dome light on and jump on the plane,
30:46
you come back a couple of days later and your battery's dead.
30:49
Our lithium-automotive batteries
30:50
have that same Optima CPR function.
30:54
The cool thing about the automotive batteries
30:56
is you just need to, all you have to do
30:58
is open up the Optima Bluetooth app on your phone
31:01
and it reactivates automatically turns the battery on.
31:04
You don't have to open the hood.
31:05
You don't have to tear up on your trunk.
31:07
You even start the battery, but vehicle up again.
31:11
Just open up the app from your driver's seat
31:14
You're making it way too easy, Daryl.
31:17
Take a pause on the side.
31:18
I'm Ron and Annie and the car doctor.
31:19
Let's, let me come back
31:20
and wanna talk a little bit about the power link system
31:22
and some of the other things you've got going on over there
31:24
at Optima Batteries.
31:25
We're here with Daryl Brockman from Optima Batteries.
31:27
I'm Ron and Annie and the car doctor.
31:28
I'll be back right after this.
31:31

33:45
Hey, look, we came back.
33:46
Ron and Annie in the car doctor.
33:47
I'm here with Darryl Brockman.
33:49
He is in product planning over there
33:51
at Optima Batteries.
33:52
Darryl, when we pulled away,
33:54
I wanted to jump in real quick
33:56
to about the power link system.
33:58
Can you talk about that real quick?
34:01
Sure, so power link is a proprietary system
34:04
with multiple patents
34:06
for battery communication, control, and charging.
34:09
It's a corded dongle that's connected to the battery
34:12
and it allows you to know the battery status
34:15
as multicolored LEDs.
34:16
So for example, the LED will flash green
34:18
if the battery's fully charged.
34:20
It'll flash red if the battery needs to be charged.
34:23
There's a button on it.
34:24
It allows you to shut the battery down
34:27
for off-season storage
34:28
or if you're railing your side-by-side to the trails
34:32
and you don't want to have to worry about it being powered up,
34:35
you can just press the button for three seconds.
34:37
It puts the battery to sleep.
34:40
I mentioned Optima CPR previously,
34:42
our built-in jumpstart function.
34:44
It's using that button on the power link
34:46
is how you'd wake the battery up again.
34:48
And then finally, there's a plug on the end
34:50
that enables you to directly plug
34:53
one of Optima's lithium-enabled chargers in
34:55
for easy maintenance of your battery.
34:58
Power sports vehicles and motorcycles,
35:00
the battery is usually not very convenient
35:03
to get to, it can take a half hour of wrenching
35:04
to even get to the point where you can see the battery.
35:07
So this corded dongle allows you to,
35:10
basically like an extension cord
35:12
so that you can charge your battery conveniently
35:14
without having to break out your wrenches.
35:16
It's sort of like that remote access cord
35:17
you see sticking out of the grill
35:19
of like a diesel plow truck
35:20
when they want to get to the block heater or something.
35:22
You're just making an access point easy to get to.
35:27
We combine that charging capability
35:29
with the LEDs to know battery status
35:32
and the ability to control the batteries, right?
35:35
is that what feeds back to the app on the phone
35:38
if we're doing that?
35:40
So the power sports batteries,
35:42
they have the power link.
35:45
Our group 31 batteries that are used for boats
35:48
and RVs are Q86 batteries
35:51
that would be used in a number of cars and trucks.
35:54
Those all have a Bluetooth app.
35:56
And that Bluetooth app is not only,
35:59
first question is why do I need an app for my battery?
36:02
I don't care what my battery is doing.
36:04
Probably the most useful feature that it has
36:08
that people really have been really very interested in
36:12
is if that battery gets discharged down to 35%,
36:16
it'll automatically go to sleep
36:17
that they're optimal CPR function I was talking about.
36:20
Just opening up by,
36:22
you just have to open up the app
36:23
and by doing that and connecting to the battery,
36:27
it activates the battery and wakes it back up again
36:29
when that built-in jumpstart function has been activated.
36:33
So you don't even have to open up the hood of the vehicle.
36:36
You don't have to make physical contact
36:38
with the, you know, dig up your trunk.
36:41
I wanna talk about safety certifications.
36:43
Why are they so important?
36:46
The safety certifications,
36:47
I mean, there's a lot of lithium battery manufacturers
36:49
and brands on the market.
36:51
Agency and safety certifications are one way to know
36:54
that the battery has undergone rigorous testing
36:57
to ensure safe operation.
36:59
And there's both cell and battery level certifications.
37:02
Optima has both, not only for the US standards,
37:06
but for international standards as well.
37:08
So, you know, when people are using lithium
37:11
and we hear lithium in the news all the time, right?
37:14
We know Optima's done the research
37:17
and that's where the safety certifications
37:19
are so important that we're dealing with,
37:21
we're dealing with the cream of the crop, so to speak.
37:24
You guys are it, that we're dealing with a good quality
37:28
of lithium battery and technology behind it.
37:32
You have Clarius's engineering team.
37:34
Clarius is the world's largest battery manufacturer.
37:37
The engineering team that supported
37:39
development of these Optima batteries.
37:41
Their normal rule is developing
37:45
low-voltage energy storage systems
37:47
for major automakers.
37:49
Clarius is the world's largest supplier
37:51
of low-voltage energy storage systems for automakers.
37:55
That same engineering team with their, you know,
37:59
robust product knowledge and experience
38:02
with the technology and battery management system
38:04
development, that's the team that supported
38:07
development of these Optima batteries.
38:09
And it's really what enabled us to have
38:12
such high performance, such a unique
38:14
and proprietary feature set.
38:16
And again, to have that long list of agency
38:19
and safety certifications.
38:20
Yep, Daryl, we're going to the listeners
38:22
go get more information.
38:24
OptimaBatteries.com or our tech support line
38:29
Perfect, Daryl, we'll get together again.
38:31
I'm Ron Ananey in the car doctor.
38:32
We'll be back right after this.
38:35
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience.
38:38
But on eBay, behind every car in part
38:41
is a story waiting to be shared.
38:43
Like this guy I read about who bought a 2020 Porsche
38:46
Cayman GT4 on eBay.
38:51
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
38:52
in great condition on eBay, but this one needed some work.
38:57
That's just the start of the story.
38:58
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
39:01
he rebuilds the whole thing with all these parts
39:05
Performance breaks, suspension, body panels,
39:08
the works guaranteed to fit.
39:11
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
39:14
was out there on the track
39:15
as a full-blown race car.
39:17
You're ready to go daily driver, your next resto mod,
39:21
hello Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
39:24
eBay has thousands of cars and is the largest online
39:27
selection of vehicle parts and accessories.
39:30
eBay, things, people, love.
39:34
Have heart disease and diet and exercise
39:36
are not enough to lower bad cholesterol?
39:39
Ask your doctor if Lekvio and glycerin can help.
39:42
Prescription Lekvio is the only bad cholesterol
39:44
lowering medication that's two doses a year
39:47
after two initial doses.
39:49
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction
39:51
to Lekvio or any of its ingredients.
39:53
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
39:55
including pain, redness, and rash, joint pain,
39:59
Call 1-833-537-8462 or visit Lekvio.com.

Hey, once again, thank you to my special guest,
41:51
Darrell Brockman for taking the time.
41:53
Battery technology is evolving.
41:56
I still think batteries are evolving faster
42:00
than the rest of the car when you look at it
42:02
because it's lithium, it's conventional, it's AGM,
42:06
it's the way we test it, it's the chargers,
42:08
it's the maintainers.
42:10
It's just accelerating like a rocket ship.
42:13
About six months ago, maybe eight months ago,
42:15
we did a test, we unwrapped one of Optima's,
42:20
the D400 plus battery maintainer.
42:23
It's up on our YouTube channel.
42:24
If you go take a look at it, just go out,
42:25
look for Ronanini and the car doctor,
42:27
type in Optima D400 plus battery maintainer.
42:30
And look at all the little technology that's in that box.
42:34
And it's just crazy what we need.
42:37
And it's also crazy what the tooling will do
42:41
because of the newer technology.
42:42
So just a great interview.
42:44
I could have talked to Darrell for another hour.
42:47
I kind of geek out on that stuff to quote Darrell.
42:50
Darrell says he's a geek with batteries.
42:51
Yeah, I'm a geek with batteries too, Darrell.
42:53
That's why I get you.
42:55
That's why it was a pleasure to have you.
42:56
So you will find more information once again
42:58
at OptimaBatteries.com.
43:00
Well, I can tell by the music,
43:01
Tom's trying to get rid of me.
43:03
He must think it's time for me to go.
43:06
And let me just say it's been a pleasure.
43:08
I hope you guys have a great rest of the weekend.
43:10
However long it lasts for you.
43:12
Until the next time we get together,
43:14
I'm Ronanini and the car doctor reminding you,
43:16
good mechanics aren't expensive.
43:22
And I think it's about time you discovered
43:24
the world's first luxury hospitality brand at sea,
43:28
the Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection.
43:30
Imagine setting sail on an all-inclusive voyage
