to Steve. That's where I want to be in Massachusetts. Is that mass or main? And Massachusetts. How are you good sir?

What's going on? 2023 Ford F-150 a two-wheel drive truck in Massachusetts.

Yeah, I'm one who likes two-wheel drive because I get more truck for the money. Gotcha.

And if it snows four or five times a year, I just don't go out. It's 24 hours the street fine.

Well, no argument there for your point. Yes sir. So my question is I only have 42,000 miles on it

and the Cadillac Converter light. Well, you know a dash light came on and I went to my

local garage and they diagnosed it as the Cadillac Converter light sensor and he advised me to go

to like an auto parts, you know auto palace, whatever and get an additive that's called CAT C-A-R-T

and it's supposed to clean things out. So I did that and the light continues to stay on.

Okay. So my question to you is what can you do? What can I do?

Well, there's there are issues, known issues with that particular vehicle with Cadillac Converters

Ford's aware of it. They've got problems. To be honest with you this vehicle is less than five

years old. You want to get your hands on go take a look at them or you know maybe you even got the

letter but there is an emissions letter out there dated December of 2024. Actually I think it went

to the dealers but I do know the emission recall was a mission recall 24 dash. I'm sorry 24

Edward 08 which talked about Cadillac Converter problems and regardless this vehicle is less than

five years old. What is it three years old now? Yeah, correct. You know Cadillac Converter should

be a five and 50 or five and 60,000 mile item. So I believe your code under federal emissions

warranty and you're an you are an all likelihood going to get a replacement cat because this is very

common on these vehicles and it will be painful. I'm going to tell you what's going to happen. It's

going to be painful Steve in that they're going to dance around and they may try software. They may

try some cleaner like you did. They may just mess up and put cats on it but I have seen this

become a real problem. Certain generation forwards and this is one of them and I can honestly say as

of right now I have not found that aftermarket cat that works in these. We've seen a few. We have

not done any yet but we're seeing people do aftermarket cats and not realizing they're under warranty

and then they go back to Ford and then they have to pay for you know new cats out of Ford because

Ford doesn't have old ones to give them back etc etc. I did do I did do a little research. I did

call where I bought I bought it from a dealer right Ford dealer right I called them in the gentleman

I do have an appointment for Tuesday. Yep. Just coming Tuesday but they were telling me that

because the truck has less than 80,000 miles I fall under this federal reimbursement program

that if it is indeed the cat elect converter they will they will change it but they never told me

who pays the money upfront they will I pay the money upfront and I wait no it's it's it's a

warranty item this is so they're saying the cat is 880 they're saying the cat is 8 years 80,000

miles which is the other side of this so yeah he's saying because I fall under this federal

guidelines everybody everybody everybody's vehicle I would say 90% of the vehicles out there are an

880 on certain emission components and I guess this particular one falls under it with catalytic

converters so that's not that's not a bad thing go go to the dealership get on file is the check

engine light still on you have the check engine light there was a time when it would go off

about you know 20 miles and then kick back on right yeah get there get there sooner rather than

later because you you want them to report record that that that light is on that it has that

particular fault code and I'm going Tuesday right yeah you'll be fine you know they're gonna end up

they'll end up putting cats on it and they'll end up probably doing a software update there's a

whole you know step-in procedure they've got to do to this but like I said its emissions recall 24

dash Edward 08 and it's very common with this truck that's getting me that's the pot that's making

me a tad angry that I have all the paperwork that you know directs them to the code that it's

this sensor I just don't like paying the extra $200 for them to tell me what I already know what

$200 back up what $200 well that's telling me that they're gonna that there's a $200 well

$189 diagnostic right because because well think of it from their perspective you want me to

tell you how I think this is gonna go from there from their perspective you're some guy calling them

on the phone saying my check engine lights on and it needs a catalytic converter so so so now they've

got to take a technician who wants to get paid so we can go home and feed his wife and kids right

that get him to get him to plug a scan tool in pull out the code do a little diagnosis verify the

condition and come back to their service writer and go yep he needs a catalytic converter to which

he's gonna go to Ford and go okay we got a guy who needs a catalytic converter what are you gonna

do about it and Ford's gonna say put a cat on the truck and I I'd be willing to bet you're not gonna

end up paying that $200 in the long run I'd be surprised if you did well if the steps go like

you just mentioned truthfully I have no problem paying the $200 right right I just don't want to pay

the $200 and it's step a b c d and e and $1500 later changing this sense of moving this around

yeah and I I don't think so and don't say sensor catalytic converters a huge part of the exhaust

system just to keep it real yeah right so yeah but I but I think I think that's how it's gonna go

and I understand that right it's you know it's yeah it's it's sort of like going to the doctor

and they charge you the deductible and then you find out the insurance company sends you the

letter three months later and goes oh you know what that was covered here's your money back

it happens you know one of the things I look at very candidly in this industry is I'm stunned

at how big the automobile repair industry has gotten the the number of different parts that are on

vehicles today the amount of technology I start thinking about inventory stockpiling keeping track

sending letters reference information all the things that go into making a vehicle and I think

that $200 is a fair place to start but I'll bet you a cup of coffee you're never going to take it

out of your pocket I bet you if that's a cat if that's a cat fault my friend I bet you they're

going to go you know what Steve you don't know what's the money it's it's going to be covered

under warranty yeah yeah yeah yeah so you call us back you call us back in two weeks and tell us

what they did how's that I want to hear it I will definitely I will definitely do that but one more

before you yeah yeah sure the 24 E has an 80 zero eight I can present that to them right

well yeah that was a that was a letter that went out to all the dealers I believe it got

milked the customers I'm not a hundred percent certain but a mission report 24 yeah mission

recall 24-ish Edward this I'm sorry 24 Edward zero eight is how I remembered it was a letter that

went out to the four dealers and I thought customers but maybe not and explain the situation because

this is a big big deal for Ford Ford's got their issues right so all right I thank you very much

long story let's go to larry and Kentucky larry what's going on here no sir thank you my car you're

welcome how can i help i'm looking at my granddaughter get a little car she kind of stuck on a

ux encore okay we went and looked at one yesterday and a little more and um

it is a 2016 had a decent miles on a 122 you know for their price it was on it and uh it had

a cold on it the man was telling him well it's a little cold but mechanic said it's no problem

well i he didn't know the cold be added cold right here we put it on it p o 14 96 i believe

okay so so he's so he's he's looking at obd 2 he didn't go in by year make model correct

from the sounds of it yeah he he did a he did a very basic scan from the sounds of it

yes sir okay just just playing held right and uh i said there and pulled off the uh all filler cap

just look for blow-buying things on it there's a very little trace of a little white you know maybe

connotation but the engine died down some and then just as a matter of a couple seconds just

started going down to where it was going to quit i started and it had pressure in there and i was

like well we're in the world this come from now put the cap back on it smooths right back out

and they're for a minute they got cap back off and little flutian next thing i know it's just

and the and the fault code was what 1497 it was no it's four oh zero i'm sorry p zero four

ninety six evaporative emission system high purge flow right so it's got a bad purge valve

all right i was one sprumps yeah so you think that's what i was that uh yeah i i listen

there's there's not a lot i'll diagnose from my seat on the telephone to tell somebody

matter of factly but you're probably in the 96 percentile that's a bad purge valve

the the take off the oil fill cap on a modern day vehicle is dicey at best because let's let's

start this way right um you know your way around cars enough okay no no no insult intended but

it sounds like you know what you're doing to the point that cars have to have some way for a

PCV right you got to vent the crankcase it's got a breathe but it's it's got to be a meter or

calibrated leak so to speak right because if it's too much it's going to affect fuel trim and

you know mixture and how they vehicle operates right so when you took when you took that oil fill

cap off how big of an air leak do you think you made well i made a big one yeah i made a big one

but right no hang out i pulled with older cars you know and you just right not the same

right well it'd be the it'd be the same thing you take the brake booster line off depending

upon the vehicle and you know it would it would it would do different things you're you're putting air

into the engine somehow now different engines react differently is this a turbo motor

yeah yeah so yeah what you could do is go find the purge valve

purge valve will be you'll find a vacuum line leading down to the intake purge valve if i'm not

mistaken sits up top it's it's a round black purge with two wires going to it disconnect if you

want to if you want to see if it's a bad purge disconnect it electrically disconnect the line

that feeds the intake manifold all right um no i'm sorry go the other way the line that goes out

to the tank right disconnect the line that goes out to the tank and with manifold vacuum applied

to the one side with the engine running electrically disconnected you should not feel any suction

on the other side and i'm betting you will it'll just it'll just it'll just be the tiniest of leaks

what what happens is the vehicle is seeing a change in fuel tank pressure right what is what

is purge let's let's talk about that for a second take a gas can fill it with two get take a

five gallon gas can fill it with two gallons worth of fuel put it outside in the sun close all the

caps what happens what happens to the tank it expands right right we have we have to burp it

all right if if we put a a handheld vacuum pump well it's making an electrically driven vacuum pump

on that tank so that when the tank reached a certain pressure the electrical control would apply

from a computer it would burp it down right in a sense that's what a purge valve is doing a purge

valve is taking excess fumes not pressure but excess fumes out of the system out of the canister

to be run through the engine and burn for emissions and and and so forth to to help the vehicle

meet compliance when when it when it sees fuel tank pressure change and it doesn't have the

purge valve turned on so the computer knows hey the purge valve is just sitting there it's not

supposed to be doing anything I'm seeing a change in tank pressure right yeah either I've got either

the cap is loose for some reason but that won't do it because that won't change fuel tank pressure

on a constant basis it'll go to one constant and stay there it'll be it'll become atmosphere

but this is seeing a variation on fuel tank pressure on and off on and off on and off on and off as

the vehicle drives you're with me yep so so if if we want to test this disconnect it electrically

go to the tank side or the canister side of the purge valve leave the vacuum side of the purge valve

hooked up wet your finger stick it over the the nipple that you've disconnected and you're

going to feel a slight suction it'll and it just there can't be anything here Larry it has to be

zero all right to the point that go buy a new purge valve try blowing through it you can't blow

through it take the old purge valve off the vehicle if you can blow through it in any way shape

or form that purge valve is bad all right I mean you listen you you can go through a bunch of

diagnoses you can follow the flow chart there's a hundred ways to go at this but a p0496 real

common purge valves I don't think I found one where it isn't the purge valve so you know I think

that's I think that's where you want to be all right sir and god bless you for helping your grand

daughter it's good to get the youngsters off on a good start in a buick on coral be a good car for

just ask the repair shop or the dealership about any oil consumption issues if they know

the seller told me it needs a new radiator okay and it has a leak oil leak it needs new gaskets

and it has 120,000 miles on it could you tell me exactly where about the car

forgive my ignorance that's okay that that vehicle this is a v8 correct

yes sir yeah that vehicle believe it or not was brought to this country with the intention of

unseeding Mercedes all right that that car had specific marketing intentions in mind and that engine

the rumor goes and i've seen i've seen three hundred and eighty thousand miles out of out of

out of one of those and a few of them coming close to it but you know they say that car that's a

half a million mile car now i'm not saying you're gonna drive a half a million miles and not

have to put money into it that's you know that's that's the next level of crazy obviously you're

gonna put money into everything it's just how much and over what kind of time frame the radiator

doesn't scare me and at 120,000 miles my question would be so you're doing a radiator have you ever

has it ever had a timing belt timing belt water pump idler tensioner all the stuff in the front

of the engine like that that's if it hasn't been done its way overdue and you'd have to do it

but my bigger concern is where's the oil leak just saying gaskets some gaskets are easy to get to

some gaskets not so much so you know where where's this oil leak from these alleged gaskets

and then keep in mind it's also a 23 year old vehicle if a particular gasket has dried out

um you know cracked broken failed etc you know and it's it's the oil pan gasket there's a whole

bunch more gaskets elsewhere in that engine is it going to be a case of having to pull the engine

and do a complete reseal which i'm not saying it isn't worth it if it's a true 120,000 mile car

and the body isn't good condition and you know depending on what you pay for it get it to

to the right mechanics shape it up you know you probably got a deal there right it's it's

they were good vehicles it's and i i have to mention that too you know the two the two stumbling

blocks here is it's older who's going to work on it right do you have a do you have a private

mechanic an independent mechanic or is this going to be dealership because the guys in the dealer

may not remember that car it's 23 years old all those guys are gone now they've all retired

you know the kids that are there now may or may not it may take them longer there may be some

complications and i'm not trying to downplay dealership techs i'm just saying they tend to see a

newer line of vehicle not an older line of vehicle like this so who's going to work on it as my

first thought and then depending on what you need you may run into parts availability issues

and you've got to kind of address that in your head how are you going to deal with that

you know as as the owner of a 2004 suburban a 97 Ford ranger i don't know what else have i got

a no two Ford Thunderbird you know a couple of older cars it's it's a different mindset to drive

something older you've you're you're you're you know always looking at traditional parts that wear

out breaks hoses belts starters alternators rotating electrical and then the hardcore stuff you get

into transmissions you get into some of the bigger powertrain components can i get parts for

these things do i want to stockpile parts for this what sort of experience do i want to have

and after i go through spending all that money right Eli after i go through after i go through

spending all this money would i have been better off buying a 2015 Lexus and you know even though I

know that particular model is unavailable and i don't think that model was available in 2015 they

graduated to something else by then so i i i just think it's it's it's a matter of

you know looking at it from all the angles that's that's a great car but you've really got to play

what if all right what if this happens what if that happens are you prepared to do that

is your mechanic prepared to go the distance or is it just going to be another old car to him and

he's not going to want to work on it and that's that's the that's absolutely the first conversation

you got to have with somebody so yes sir all right well if i may ask you yes he's

driver and he's asking just for five thousand he told me he took it to the Lexus dealership

and specifically gonna cost nine hundred dollars for those leaks to be repaired and

the radiator he told me it's gonna be approximately about seven hundred dollars the rate the rate

the rate the the radiator sounds right the question i've got is the nine hundred dollars worth of

gaskets what are they specifically and how are they going to do it so for nine hundred dollars

they're not pulling the engine because it would be a lot more just in labor so this is this is

probably valve cover gaskets i'm better if it's if it's if it's valve cover gaskets and that's

all it is and it very well could be then yeah that's a fair price all right okay because you can't

you can't buy any you know go go look at anything today Eli what can you buy for five grand

right nothing nothing right yes sir you know and but you've got it you've got to be satisfied in

your mind you've got to sit there and go Eli if this car pukes a transmission i'll put a trans

in it Eli if this car pukes a catalytic converter and they're four thousand dollars i'll put a

cat in it and if if you can have that conversation in your head and say yes i'm okay with that

let's go to dawn dawn how can i help you i'll tell you i'm a regular listener uh i have a 2008

dodge ram it's a 4.7 V8 actually miles has sxt i've only seen one other one around right

it's similar to a 1500 but uh it has a code come up on it it's 9 a s c a p now that code come up

and then then the check engine like come up uh where did you get where did you get that code

from dawn where did this play on the dashboard let's see i took i told that to a guy does my

inspections on my vehicles and he said i never heard of such a thing it comes up on my

mileage come up my mileage so i what i did i got on my smartphone and i asked my smartphone about it

my smartphone says it could be my gas cap or the wiring and that's the wiring scared me

because i had a squirrel under the truck and i think it cheered off the house from my uh my

windshield washer reserved all right so why don't we why don't we do this why don't we do a code

scan and we'll see what's in there pending right if if there's a fault you know gas cap is a good

generic it's sort of like a fix all when the industry doesn't know what else to say everybody picks

on the poor lowly gas cap what they're what where i think you're going with this is i think you're

going to have some sort of evaporative emissions fault so evaporative emissions what is it let's take

a gas can let's take a five gallon gas can fill it up and leave it out in the park a lot all sealed up

what's going to happen to it yeah it's gonna swell up right in the sun so so we have to open up

invent it right we have to let it let the fumes out so we don't have a kaboom well you know we

can't put fumes out into the atmosphere because that's a violation of the clean air act we've got to

you know control that emission and do something with it so in in a way an automobile is like that

gas can right it's just the big gas tank with four tires attached to it and we'll we'll control

what happens to the fumes and we'll do it various ways we put it into the canister it's certain

times we're going to open up something called a purge valve which will purge or clean the canister

of fumes right and put it back into the engine to burn we'll use something called a vent valve

this is that conversation you hear me talk about if your house has a front door in a back door

the the front door is the purge valve it let's let's air in if you want the air to move through

the house you have to open up the vent and then air will flow through and evacuate the house your

house being the charcoal canister it needs to know like you need to know if a storm is approaching

you close your doors and windows right yeah so you need to know that the house is secure cars the

same way it needs to know if purge is closed vent is closed that the system has integrity

and they do that they test various things right and and they control it when they see a fault

the easiest thing for them to tell you is hey the gas capsules the gas cap is a fault you know

they probably couldn't fit the word purge valve or vent valve on the dashboard if you want to know

the truth so you know this is got to be diagnosed but you've got to know what fault code you've got

now having said that and don't let it scare you this isn't hard to fix all right

you know this this particular car has an e-sum which is the abbreviation for evaporative system

integrity monitor you ever look inside a toilet you ever take the top off the tank off the

little of the toilet you look at the flap that seals the water yeah this car sort of has

something like that that's the e-sum except it's not using water tank pressure when you turn

the key off tank pressure builds up and pushes the e-sum closed against the rubber flap like that

toilet tank has it it causes a change in tank pressure and as long as tank pressure hits a

particular point it drives voltage down at the sensor and they know that hey the system sealed

right but if the kid at the gas station left the gas cap loose it's never going to build pressure right

so the computer says oh it's a bad gas cap so you run out you buy a gas cap like everybody else

and that doesn't fix it then we go on and we talk about everything else so the long and the short

of it you got to take it to your mechanic let him let him scan it the way any faults come up

right if no faults come up just keep an eye on it you're not going to hurt anything all right long

all right because i'm not trying to make you go out and spend money you don't have to spend

but know that the day that that particular fault occurred it could have been the result of cold

weather cold weather makes rubber contract it it definitely has an effect on the older

Chrysler products but this could be a a gas cap that's drying out this could be a bailing e-sum

which for the sake of our conversation we're going to consider the vent valve or the back door of

the house this could have a bad purge valve this could also have if you were to pop the hood

and look underneath the hood there are plastic black plastic lines with little rubber fittings on

them correct yeah all those fittings are now you know one of 15 18 16 17 years old you know they're

all getting dry and brittle so you want to make sure they're they're all you know holding there's

no leaks there so it's tedious to fix one of these don't but it can be done and it can be done

reasonably well i will tell you this e-sums and purge valves are very common i tend to do them in

pairs once i prove one bed i do them both because they've both been exposed same amount of time same

amount of age same amount of rubber and so forth but first step for this is you really have to scan

to see what code is in there whether it's active or pending and then go from there if you want to

wait till the light comes on and sets the fault fine but keep the things in mind that i talked about

the e-sum the purge and so on and if you want to hear this again or if anybody wants to hear this
